District outlines new STEAM plans BY RIKKI N. MASSAND During the Board of Education’s meeting on Tuesday March 9, the board discussed S.T.E.M. education in the Garden City Public Schools, as it relates to the instructional budget. The School Board is developing its budget for the 2021-22 school year. The new district Coordinator of S.T.E.A.M. Christina Cardella discussed her entry into Garden City

Public Schools. She conducted over 100 interviews with secondary-level students, faculty, parents and her fellow administrators to assess the district’s programs in STEM disciplines as well as arts education. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha noted that Cardella arrived as the district created the new Coordinator of S.T.E.A.M. position for 20202021, as the prior Coordinator of Mathematics Stuart Dods retired last summer following

The For A Better Garden City (FABGC) candidates, who challenged candidates from Garden City’s Community Agreement Party (CAP) for seats on the Village Board of Trustees, won the March 16th village election with a large margin. Cosmo Veneziale was elected mayor; Tom O’Brien, Terence Digan and Bruce Chester were elected as trustees for two year terms and Mary Flanagan was elected as a trustee for a one year term. Village Justice Allen Mathers, who was unopposed, was re-elected. Although the official results were unavailable by press time, in unofficial results the FABGC candidates each had approximately 1200 machine votes to 600 votes each for the CAP candidates. Absentee ballots, of which there were approximately 1800, appeared to be leaning even more strongly in favor of the FABGC candidates. While voting results are normally certified by next morning, the number of absentee ballots this year delayed certification. On Election Day lines stretched across the parking lot at Village Hall throughout the day with residents waiting up to an hour to vote. In a statement on Facebook on March 18th, Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch congratulated the winners. “I would like to congratulate Cosmo for being elected Mayor and for the other four FABGC candidates for being elected as trustees. This is an exciting time for you and your families. I wish you all the best at your new positions in our village government.”

a long and successful career. “When you think about the ongoing work in our district and as you hear about our budget presentation, particularly with the instructional components, you will see those important skills we want our students to have. I do see Christina’s efforts in this area (S.T.E.A.M.) as pretty significant and for K through 12th, we want to have kids experience a nice

At the Garden City Board of Trustees meeting on Thursday, March 11, the Board agreed to an increase in the estimated $8.7 million price tag for the water tower replacement project on Old Country Road. Originally, the Board resisted a change order of $465,500 when it was first presented last fall. But at its March meeting the Board authorized the expense and attributed project delays to circumstances out of the village’s control. When the Board first discussed a change order from the vendor, Caldwell Tanks, the decision was ultimately made to table this item.
