Village hires consultant for pool, Rec Dept.
COUNTY SWIMMERS
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
The Garden City High School Boys Swimming and Diving team competed in the counties against all Nassau County schools last week. Six members of the team will compete in the NY States, which will be held on March 1st at Nassau County Aquatic Center. See pages 54-55.
With six weeks to go before spring sports and four months until the summer 2019 Garden City Pool season, the Village Board of Trustees hired a consulting company to work with the Recreation and Parks Department because the current head of the department is set to retire in May. For the next six months the village has hired the East Meadowbased firm American Pool Consultants, which is run by former Garden City Recreation Superintendent Paul Blake, to help with operations at the Garden City Pool. A $70,000 contract for American Pool Consultants was approved by the trustees along with a corresponding transfer of $35,000 from the village’s Contingency fund into Recreation-Contractual Services. At the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday February 13, Administrator Suozzi explained “due to Mr. Ocker’s pending departure at the end of the 2018-2019 village fiscal year (May 31) it is important to ensure a smooth transition in this area. I am asking the Board to hire American Pool Consultants to work with our Recreation and Parks team as the village gears up for the upcoming recreation and pool seasons,” Suozzi said. The administrator later added that the engagement of the consultant runs from February 14 through mid-September, coinciding with the end of summer 2019 pool season. Tower demolition causes discolored water Village election March 19th BY GARY SIMEONE
Some residents have posted their concerns on a Facebook page recently about the brackish water that has been coming out of pipes in their homes. The source of the problem was recently uncovered as prep work for the demolition of a water tower on Maria Lane and Old Country Road. The current water tower has been in existence since 1933. As part of the replacement process for the new all steel
column designed water tower, which is scheduled to be completed by 2020, Village water department employees have been running tests on the water system. This has caused temporary fluctuations in water pressure and discolored water to flow from pipes. According to village officials, the preparation work was similar to flushing out fire hydrants, and was only expected to take place for a week to ten days at the most. They advised people that the
water was still safe to use but it would be wise to draw water for cooking ahead of time and store bottled water for drinking purposes. Residents should also check the quality of the water for dishwashing and doing their laundry. Fire hydrants will also be flushed on a regular basis as part of the the water testing process. Earlier this month, the village opened the connection to the West Hempstead water sysSee page 26
