Village restricts gas leaf blower use

BY RIKKI MASSAND At its meeting on Tuesday, February 15 the Garden City Board of Trustees approved the two proposed local laws concerning landscaping in Garden City. One law requires the licensing of all landscapers operating in the village, and the other places a seasonal ban on the use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers between the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day Monday, each year. Any person, persons or companies engaged in providing a landscaping service to any resident or property in Garden City that is not their own will now require a license that will be issued by the municipality. The Director of Public Works, an unfilled position in Garden City as of this week, retains the powers to reasonably interpret the rules and regulations and it is possible someone only raking a front yard for a resident would be granted an exemption from obtaining a landscaping license, but the law as written includes all landscaping services provided on a property. Loreto Ferri
Nassau County Police arrested Loreto Ferri, 49, of Hempstead for allegedly robbing the People's United Bank on Seventh Street on Monday, February 14. According to the Nassau County Police Robbery Squad, Ferri entered the bank at 9:56 a.m. and presented a teller with a note demanding money. The teller complied and Ferri allegedly fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of currency. There See page 12
