one year. The Village Board was asked to fund $5,809 as a transfer into the Library’s Operating Budget “Contracted Services” account, in order to pay for the retention of Securitas for one year, as the amount originally budgeted was $53,995. The Village Board would have also authorized the award of the GCPL security contract as

At its meeting on Thursday night February 6, Garden City’s Superintendent of Public Works and Deputy Village Administrator Joseph D. Francisco spoke about adding safety measures to the village’s downtown areas. The busy intersection of Franklin Avenue, and 7th Street -- an area known as the T-zone -- was examined for placement of bollards designed to stop a car from mounting the sidewalks and hitting pedestrians. “Along with the bollards for 7th Street and Franklin, crosswalk safety became another item for us. Overall, we just wanted to take a complete overview of this area -- everywhere there’s commerce and public gathered, not just on the corners. We compiled an informal committee which includes the Garden City Police Department, the Garden City Building/Engineering Department, Street Department, members of the Department of Public Works and others to study what was there and to determine our goals based on the layout of the street and obviously to propose solutions,” DiFrancisco said. The approximate locations for six bollards on each side of the T-zone intersection were displayed in a PowerPoint presentation at last week’s Board meeting. DiFrancisco could not pinpoint the spots for installations due to the number of utility lines under that section of sidewalk at 7th Street, so actual placement of bollards could vary from the visuals presented. The French Workshop on the north side of 7th Street and the longtime pub Leo’s Midway on the south corner are locations where the village Public Works professionals spent time and recorded the operations of a number of street lights, signals, crossings, sidewalk spacing and curb cuts. According to DiFrancisco every item such as storm drains at corners, trees and poles where signals are mounted came into consideration. “Placement of these bollards in combination with the trees and poles already located there should provide enough protection for this corner for any type of vehicle

Village authorizes full time security for Library BY RIKKI N. MASSAND At the Village Board of Trustees’ meeting on Thursday, February 6, the board approved funding to hire security guards for more than 68 hours per week, even though the Library Board had only requested 40 hours per week coverage. The Library Board’s request for a transfer of funds to cover the 40 hours was scrapped by the Board of Trustees’ liaison the Library

Board, Trustee Colleen Foley. Instead, after removing the pending approval of the annual cost of $59,804 for Securitas, Foley began a discussion that resulted in other trustees voicing their support for the contract to be extended, before it begins, and allow for up to the full 68.5 hours per week that Garden City Public Library is open. This increased the bid award for Securitas to $99,762 for
