Library Board scrutinizes rate increase for security service BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
At the Garden City Public Library’s Board of Trustees’ meeting held Monday, January 11, the board scrutinized a 10% rate increase by the company that provides security guard service. The vendor, Securitas, has been provid-
ing the Library’s security guard service since last July. Library Director Marianne Malagon noted that as of the January 11 meeting, the Library was still paying the rate from the initial contract that was in effect from July through December. The
rate increase took effect on January 1st. Malagon commented on a discussion she had just prior to the GCPL Board’s monthly meeting with the regional manager for firm Securitas, vendor for the library’s security guard coverage. See page 53
During the Western Property Owners’ Association Resident Electors’ meeting held Tuesday, January 19 at the Garden City Casino, Deputy Mayor Robert Bolebruch was confirmed as the WPOA candidate for the mayoral term on the Garden City Board of Trustees that will commence in April 2021 and conclude in April 2023. The Village’s election will be held on Tuesday, March 16th, and will be a contested election, a rarity in Garden City’s history. Bolebruch will be facing a challenge by Cosmo Veneziale for the mayor’s seat. Veneziale is a candidate of the residents’ group For A Better Garden City. Under Garden City’s unique
Community Agreement system, the four property owners associations each select two candidates for the Board of Trustees, and the mayor’s position rotates among the four sections. Those selections take place at the POAs Resident Electors meetings in January, but the actual election takes place in March. Turnout at the March election is usually very light, as the Community Agreement slate is rarely challenged. Bolebruch took the opportunity, after thanking the WPOA directors, members and nominating committee, to respond to some questions he’s recently received. Bolbruch said that if he is elected on as Garden City’s next mayor, See page 55
Board approves funds for Cathedral Ave. traffic study BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
At its first meeting of 2021, held on Thursday January 14, Garden City’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved $47,800 for a Traffic Calming Study of Cathedral Avenue. Albany-based firm Creighton Manning LLP was selected to do the study. As presented by Frank A. Filiciotto, professional engineer and branch manager at Creighton Manning LLP, in Garden City
Cathedral Avenue has an average daily number of vehicles travelling on it that may not warrant four travel lanes. He said a “Road Diet” which would include designated left-turn lanes could be implemented fairly easily. Approximately 11,500 vehicles travel on Cathedral Avenue each day. “What we’re looking at here is a Road Diet for a roadway that has far fewer vehicles to support. There See page 54
