FENCING TEAM ON A ROLL
BY RIKKI N. MASSAND
The Garden City Girls Fencing team improved its record to 5-1 by winning its last two meets in a decisive fashion. Garden City beat Wheatley 14-7 and Herricks 14-3.
Garden City Police officers honored at Heroes of New York ceremony Four officers from the Garden City Police were recognized by State Senator Kevin Thomas at the Heroes of New York Ceremony on January 4 for acts of heroism and exemplary service to the community. Sergeant Kevin Reilly, Officer John Russell, Detective Kevin Madden, and recently-retired Detective Richard Pedone received special honors at the American Legion Post 1711 in Levittown. Mayor Theresa Trouvé and
Commissioner Kenneth Jackson attended the ceremony to congratulate the officers on their achievements. Sergeant Reilly was presented with the New York State Liberty Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate. Sergeant Reilly has a history of brave and dedicated service to his community as a 20-year veteran of the Garden City Police, in addition to a 23 year record
of service to the nation as a member of the New York Army National Guard. Major Reilly was presented with the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and several other distinguished awards over the course of his service. He spent six months deployed to Ground Zero after 9/11, one and a half years active duty deployment in 2004 and 2005, and was activated out of retirement in See page 38
Integrating art and design curriculum into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines has been gaining momentum in Garden City’s educational circles, from the school district’s computational thinking projects and the Friends of STEAM nonprofit group to a leading institution of higher education on Long Island -- Adelphi University. Among the $87.9 million in Empire State Development grant funds awarded to the Long Island region in 2019, a $140,000 award contributes to a university project in Garden City: Adelphi University STEM Research Labs. Adelphi will renovate and equip a STEM center at their Garden City campus to support curriculum in environmental science and biomedical fields. The grant was recognized as a part of the 2019 New York Regional Economic Development Council Awards. In addition, Adelphi University Library has just built and integrated a new innovation learning center where various university groups, nonprofit and for-profit industries and student clubs can gather for hands-on and “makerspace” exercises in problem solving, design exploration and 3-D fabrication. Adelphi models its Art and Design curricula after “the teaching artist.” Dr. Cindy Maguire is the academic director in Adelphi’s Levermore Global Scholars and Art and Design Education. She met with the local nonprofit organization Garden City Friends of STEAM in October at its fall meeting. Plans are now underway for Adelphi to host students from Garden City and offer a setting for hands-on STEAM learning activities plus insights into science and design careers. Recently other districts and private schools in the area have made field trips during school days to the Adelphi STEAM lab, and Dr. Maguire hopes Garden City school groups will visit soon. “The Lab and our Art and Design program has taken the lead in our STEAM conversation and moving into real interdisciplinary teaching and learning sphere. Adelphi University is really paying attention to partnering between the arts and science, technology people and with computer science people to build models other teachers can look toward -- our two NSF (National Science Foundation) grants in 2019 attest to this process,” Dr. See page 34
