Catholic Daughters collect clothing for ACLD
At a collection of used clothing and other items, Catholic Daughters Court #1690 of St. Bernard’s Parish collected 210 bags of materials weighing in at 4,840 pounds. The items collected included clothing, shoes, handbags, sheets, belts, towels, coats, bathing suits, cover ups and baseball hats. The destination of the collection is an affiliate of ACLD (Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities) program called ReWearAble. The event was chaired by Susan Maher and Louise Cassano. “This was a great collection for a very worthy cause” said Maher. “ReWearAble is an organization that is unique and serves its population in a number of ways through employment and repurposing materials that helps support other worthy causes,” commented Cassano. ReWearAble is a recycling and job creation program committed to helping people with developmental disabilities pursue enviable lives through employment. Employees of ReWearAble conduct the in-house sorting ensuring everything collected is prepared for reuse or repurposing. ReWearable accepts clothing in any condition and of all types and sizes. For more information or to schedule a pickup by ReWearAble, call 516-822-2099 or email info@rewearable.org.

Author pays visit to Levittown Schools BY GARY SIMEONE
Students from Wisdom Lane and Jonas Salk Middle Schools received a nice surprise late last month, as children fiction’s author Rob Buyea paid a visit to the schools. The visit was part of the school district’s Summer Reading Extravaganza program. “During the summer months, incoming sixth through eighth graders read a different set of books as part
of this summer reading program,” said Kerin Slattery, director of English in the district. “This summer they read a book by Mr. Buyea called ‘Because of Mr. Terupt.’ ” The author held an assembly with each grade level and spoke to the students about their shared reading experiences and how they might relate to characters in the book. Slattery said that each year, the students read a new series of books by a different author.
“We’ve been rotating three different books over the last few years that the district purchased with their own money, and they are good books that are engaging to middle school students. It also gives us as teachers a formative assessment of where students are with their reading skills early in the school year.” The two other books that are part of the rotating schedule include ”Pay it Forward” by See page 8
