Nassau County Police arrested an East Meadow man after he allegedly beat a woman into unconsciousness on Tuesday, October 23rd, in Levittown. According to detectives, at 3:30PM, the female victim, 36, was operating her Chrysler Town and Country westbound on Hempstead Turnpike, with her child in the rear seat, when she saw a man throw a large rock at her vehicle. The rock struck the victim’s vehicle causing damage to the front passenger’s side headlight and hood. Police say the woman pulled over, exited
her vehicle and questioned the subject’s behavior. The victim was on her cell phone with 911 when the man approached her and allegedly punched her in the face. She fell to the ground and the man allegedly took her cell phone from her hand. Police say he again punched her in the face, causing her to lose consciousness. The victim regained consciousness and attempted to get up when the man allegedly continued striking her in the face. At this time, a group of individuals began yelling See page 10
Affordable housing for seniors and adults with disabilities will be more readily available in Bethpage, as part of the State’s $20 billion, five-year housing plan. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in October at the ACLD (Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities) campus to welcome in the newly constructed 48-bedroom single-apartment complex. Robert Goldsmith, executive director at ACLD, said that the new apartment complex will enhance the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. “At ACLD, we are dedicated to improving the lives of the people we support and provide them the opportunities to live an exceptional and enviable life,” said Goldsmith. “We have made it our mission and priority to lead the effort on Long Island to secure resources to build safe and supporting housing environments for those with special needs as well as those who face affordable housing challenges.” The apartment complex is called the Oyster Bay Gardens LLC, and it contains 36 apartment units for seniors and 12 apartment units for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The 36 units will be available for low and moderate income households for people aged 62 and older with incomes up to 60 percent of the area median income. RuthAnne Visnauskas, commissioner of HCR, (NYS Homes and Community Renewal) said that residents living in the apartments will live independently and help to stimulate the local economy. “Oyster Bay Gardens will provide 48 households with the opportunity to get the affordable housing they need to take part in our growing economy and live independently in the community they love,” said Visnauskas. The three-story complex, located at 807 South Oyster Bay Road, will include a laundry room with washers and dryers on each floor, computer and exercise rooms, and See page 10
