BLUE RIBBON INITIATIVE
Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker speaking at the Back the Blue event in Hicksville BY GARY SIMEONE There were blue ribbons everywhere last Thursday in Hicksville as Nassau County and Town of Oyster Bay officials joined with police officers from the 8th and 2nd Precincts for a Blue Ribbon initiative. In a time of strong anti-police sentiment, the initiative was meant to encourage homes and local businesses to show their support for the men and women in blue. Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker, who helped start the initiative, spoke about the importance of having police
officers in our communities. “We are here today to reinforce our support of our local police departments and to recognize that police officers are here for us to back up our citizens residents and community businesses,” said Walker, who is a Hicksville resident. She said the Blue Ribbon campaign began in New Hyde Park, and the initiative has been working its way through the County to the Town of Oyster Bay. “It’s been a rough time for our police officers with the pandemic and all of the protests going on and the calls to
defund the police,” said Walker. “With schools reopening soon, we want to make sure we have all of our officers out there to help our children stay safe.” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino said that placing the ribbons around trees and signposts in our communities symbolizes our support for law enforcement. “Putting up these ribbons symbolizes the fact that we are thinking of our men and women in law enforcement who are out there protecting See page 15
