Local legislators examine real estate covenants BY GARY SIMEONE
Two Nassau County legislators are working on a legislation to create a database in the County of racially restrictive real estate covenants. Legislators Arnold Drucker and Carrie Solages held a meeting in front of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building in Mineola on Monday to propose the new legislation. “We are trying to look from an historical perspective on when segregation started in the housing market on Long Island and when real estate brokers started steering people depending upon their race to different communities,” said Drucker. “Our ultimate goal with this database is to bring light into
when segregation policies began and to empower people to break down the barriers and walls of racism.” He said that he is enlisting the help of staff from Molloy College and Adelphi University to research deeds and County clerk records to uncover past racial covenants. “We want them to research houses built in the late 1940s and early 50s and see how long ago racial bias and segregation in real estate began,” said Drucker. Drucker gave the example of Levittown, one of the first post war suburban developments built in the County in the late 1940s. See page 15
