Volunteers aim to collect 1000 books during Day of Service
Members of the Hicksville - Jericho and the Floral Park - Bellerose Rotary Clubs, along with local volunteers, have set a goal of collecting at least 1000 books during a collection drive on Saturday, May 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hicksville Fire Department.
The drive is part of the Rotary Day of Service, an event at which Rotarians across five states and three countries will volunteer at different projects for a Day of Service. The two local clubs will be accepting donations of new or gently used books (for children and adults) which will be sorted for donation to The Book Fairies, a not-for profit that sources and redistributes books to under-resourced communities on Long Island and in New York City.
Volunteers will accept donations at the Hicksville Fire Department, 90-94 West John Street, Hicksville between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
No blind support
To the Editor:
The letter by former Jericho Board vice president Dr. Pam WassermanHeath seems to confuse a School Board with the Board of Directors of a country club! Smart, perceptive board members maintain a supportive but always critical look at what is going on in their district. They are not part of the "a-men chorus" that blindly supports every position and every statement made by administrative personnel.
Has Ms. Wasserman-Heath ever watched a debate in the Israeli Knesset or the British Parliament... or in more and more school boards around the country that disagree with what is being done or promulgated in their districts?
Dr. Wasserman-Heath only reminds the Jericho voters that we need business and financial executives, and experienced educators, on the board, not more medical doctors!
