New Chamber president sees hope for businesses

Amaka Oweazim Muir, senior marketing and business development director of the Broadway Commons Mall has taken the reins as the 2021 Hicksville Chamber of Commerce president. She succeeds immediate past Chamber president Mike Ruvolo, the chief impression officer (CIO) at Hicksville Minuteman Press.
Loosening restrictions
Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray (second right) presented a Certificate of Recognition to Helen Dowd of Levittown on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Also attending were Helen’s friends and family, and Nassau County Legislators John Ferretti and Denise Ford.
Arrest made in multiple burglaries

Nassau County Police arrested a 27 year-old man with no known address for allegedly committing at least five burglaries in the area during the last month. According to police, Second Precinct officers responded to a residence on Mead Avenue, Hicksville, on Saturday, April 10 at 2:45 p.m. for a burglary that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers broadcast a
description of the suspect. Responding officers located Carlos Morinville, 27, and placed him into custody. Police say he was also responsible for the following burglaries: A March 16 burglary of a residence on Circle Drive in Westbury A March 24 burglary of a residence on Barry Drive in Hicksville See page 12

With more and more people getting vaccinated and loosening restrictions on gatherings, Muir is hoping to leverage the fairer weather as well as Broadway Commons’ spacious layout to host community and local Chamber of Commerce events and build some more connections in the Hicksville area. “What we’re trying to do is basically two-fold with Broadway Commons and us being so open, I want to be able to utilize the mall space and get back to our networking and table events where we’d have a place for businesses to set up and meet new clients, meet each other and get to network. Our first meeting on the day we installed our Hicksville Chamber’s 2021 officers was when County Executive Laura Curran came by -- we set up
the meeting in the Commons’ center court, and we partnered with our restaurants as they provided food and drinks for everyone. It was such a good feeling and that inspired me to believe it’s the right way for our networking events to go on moving forward. It could even be once a month and a way of highlighting all the local business chambers to come in, as a way of getting to know each other,” Amaka Muir said in an interview.
New Chamber President
Muir finds the timing right to start to work on expanding her own as well as the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce’s contacts and network in the eastern Nassau County area. She served as a volunteer and board member of the Hicksville Chamber, noting that she was a leader in fundraising and managing the planning and execution of Chamber events. There were needs to bring the chamber’s mission and outreach in the expanding, multicultural Hicksville community forward and ‘hit refresh’ with the new ideas she and others had worked on previously.
