School districts address spread of coronavirus
Local school districts are addressing the spread of the novel coronavirus in different ways. Plainview - Old Bethpage closed two days this week because a staff member was found to be infected. The district performed deep cleaning of the Pasadena Elementary School, and as of press time was awaiting instructions from the Deparmtne of Health as to when it could reopen schools. The Hicksville school district said it is in continual contact with the Health Department and has been disinfecting continuously. The Levittown school district

Police seek information in fatal Hicksville hit-and-run
Nassau County Police have identified the model of vehicle that was used in a fatal hitand-run collision on Tuesday, March 3 in Hicksville. According to police, at about 5:45 a.m. a light-colored
sedan traveling eastbound on W. John Street struck a pedestrian at the intersection of W. John Street and Kuhl Avenue, in Hicksville. The victim died as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision.

In a letter posted on the district's web site, Superintendent of Schools Tonie McDonald said, "We are in constant contact with the Department of Health and our school Medical Director and are taking all recommended precautions to keep our schools clean and safe. We will continue to maintain close contact with the Nassau County Commissioner of Health and to communicate with you should our situation change.
Arrest for police assault Nassau County Police arrested a 78-year-old Hicksville man on Tuesday, March 5, after he allegedly assaulted a police officer. According to detectives, police were called to a residence on Emmet Place for a disturbance at 12:45 a.m. Upon arrival police say they found several people including Joel Ferdinand, 78, inside. They say Ferdinand became uncooperative with officers and kicked a box full of bottles towards the officers. According to police, they attempted to handcuff Ferdinand,
but he began to flail his arms while making stabbing motions towards the officers with a metal tobacco pipe in his hand and pushed one of the officers into a table causing them to strike their head. Police say the officer suffered substantial pain and swelling to their head and right hand and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Defendant Joel Ferdinand is charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Menacing a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree.
