Recognition for acts of kindness The Town of Oyster Bay is launching a new initiative to recognize residents for doing good deeds, as part of ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ week, which is held in mid-February. “Last year, we honored individuals for their considerate gestures and making a difference in the lives of others,” said Town Councilwoman Laura Maier. “We are pleased to be able to expand upon that initiative this year and recognize even more residents who truly make a difference in their communities.” Residents are invited to nominate someone who is deserving of recognition throughout the month of February, which is Random Acts of Kindness Month. The Town will deliver a special certificate to thank that individual for making a difference in their community. Submissions will be accepted through February 28. “We want to recognize family members, friends and neighbors for their random acts of kindness throughout the year,” said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Whether they helped deliver groceries to a senior citizen during this pandemic, shoveled snow during the blizzard, or otherwise helped out a neighbor in need, this is an opportunity to recognize their good deeds.” To recognize a Town of Oyster Bay resident for their random acts of kindness, simply email details of what kind See page 14

Nassau County Legislators John Ferretti and Rose Walker held a press conference at the Eisenhower Park dog park on Monday to announce a new legislation to help curb dog on dog attacks in the County. The new bill was prompted from a horrific episode that Legislator Ferretti experienced in 2019 with his own family dog in his Levittown neighborhood. Legislator Ferretti recounted the story of how a neighbor’s dog viciously attacked his family dog, Benny, in November of 2019. “It was around Election Day at the time, when I returned home and was pulling into my driveway when I heard loud screaming from the front of my house,” said Ferretti. “At the time, my mother was walking our family dog, whose name is Benny. When I got out of my car to see the commotion, I saw a very large dog attached to Benny and my mom screaming.” He said that he and a couple of his neighbors tried prying Benny from the dog’s jaw, but their efforts proved to be fruitless. “The dog only released when Benny became lifeless. He basically gave up,” said Ferretti. “Miraculously, Benny survived the attack. He was brought to the hospital with multiple injuries and he needed multiple surgeries. Although he survived, he’s not the same dog he was physically or emotionally.” He said the dog who attacked Benny was taken by the Town of Hempstead, and a determination was made by a judge to see if the animal could be See page 14
