Town invites patriotic displays for Fourth of July In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Town of Oyster Bay is inviting residents to showcase their patriotism and community pride by participating in the Town’s “Red, White & Blue” patriotic decorating initiative. As our nation prepares to commem-

orate 250 years of American independence, residents are encouraged to proudly display the colors of our country and honor the values that unite us as Americans.

“America’s 250th Anniversary is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate our

On June 24, Hicksville High School proudly celebrated the graduating Class of 2026 with a heartfelt commencement ceremony held on the school's athletic field. As the sound of "Pomp and Circumstance" filled the air, graduates processed onto the field to cheers from family and friends.

The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem performed by seniors Kayla Mancuso and Kylie McLaughlin. Principal Raymond Williams then welcomed graduates and their families, expressing his gratitude, admiration and pride in the accomplishments of the Class of 2026.

In his commencement address, Principal Williams praised the graduates for their perseverance, academic achievements and the choices that brought them to this milestone. Focusing on the importance of character, integrity and living a meaningful life, he reminded students that true success is measured not only by accomplishments but by the values they uphold. "Our greatest responsibility is not simply to succeed," he said, "it is to be the kind of person whose success never comes at the expense of personal values. In the storm of life, challenges and disappointments will come, but the question is: when those moments arrive, plant yourself firmly in integrity and anchor yourself in truth. Stand beside those who need support and always have the courage to do what is right,

especially when it seems difficult."

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Theodore Fulton also congratulated the graduates, encouraging them to define success on their own terms. Reflecting on the lives of successful individuals throughout history, he emphasized that they never allowed others to determine their worth. "I want you to always possess the skills, the intellect, and the talents necessary to be successful in all of your endeavors, even if the path looks different than what you originally imagined," he said. He concluded by encouraging graduates to "embrace the unknown, take risks, lean into challenges, overcome adversity, outwork your competition, and be the absolute best version of yourself that you can be."

The ceremony also featured remarks from board of education trustee Sunita Manjrekar and special guest Adam Firester, Hicksville's 2026 Hall of Fame inductee.

Valedictorian Ian Kim delivered a thoughtful address reflecting on achievement, selfworth, and the enduring importance of respect. "Self-respect is the first and most essential step toward success," he said. "You can't build anything meaningful on top of a version of yourself that you don't believe in."

He concluded by encouraging his classmates to leave a legacy of respect wherever life leads them.

Future of museum in doubt

To the Editor: I have been in the local museum business for three decades now, having co-founded the Levittown Museum where I have been President since 2014.

But this letter is about another museum.

The Hicksville Gregory Museum where I have worked since 2001 as a docent, staff entomologist, advisor, teacher, gift shop attendant....sundry others. It is in grave danger of closing its doors in 2027.

The Hicksville Gregory Museum was established in 1963 by educator, geologist, entomologist, photographer and civic activist Dr. Gardiner E. Gregory.

Ten years after its founding, it moved into Hicksville's historic 1895 Heitz Place Courthouse; a building on the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Registry of Historic Places. Open to the general public, the Gregory is a teaching museum in which thousands of elementary school children over the years have learned about basic geology, paleontology, chemistry, biology, and local history. I have met residents of Hicksville and environs who grew up going to the Museum and inspired by science at a young age, went on to

Alas, the future of the museum is very seriously in doubt - and, consequently the historic courthouse building. Dure to financial difficulties in the Hicksville school district, the Gregory lost its service contract it has had with the district since 1982. It was a major source of income to cover operational and insurance costs not covered by admissions and gift shop sales alone.

The museum now struggles to develop a business model that can create a stable financial structure but it is in a race against time. Without donations from the public, the business community, and the support of local elected officials, Long Island could lose this valuable educational resource and piece of its history. We have already lost so much of our local history in recent years.

Perhaps, in the end, the Hicksville Gregory Museum needs to be incorporated into the Town, County, or State departments of parks, recreation, and historic sites. That might be a long-term solution but, for the present, the public needs to step forward.

BY GARY SIMEONE Taerin Lee, a thirteen-year old middle school student from Jericho, credits her grandmother for sparking her interest in the game of golf. She has gotten so good at the game that she recently placed third the 102nd MGA Women’s Public Links Championship.

“My grandmother introduced me to the sport when I was younger and I’ve taken a liking to it ever since,” said Lee. “I think the best thing about golf is that it’s a solo sport, so if you do something good or you make a mistake then everything falls on your shoulders.”

Lee, who is a member of the High School varsity golf team, played in the Federations Cup tournament last weekend on the Bethpage Red course at Bethpage State Park golf course. The course is an eighteen hole 6,500 yard that is considered one of the toughest courses at Bethpage.

She earned her way into the prestigious tournament by placing in the top-ten list of players in the state championships at the high school level.

Lee faced off against some of the top female players in the City, Catholic, Private and Public-school

rankings.

“I am really proud of myself because I competed against some of the best girl players around and I was able to finish in third at such a young age,” said Lee. She ended up with a final score of eight over par on a course that is long distance and considered one of the tougher ones to play.

“It is a pretty good score from that distance but I know I can do better in the future. I plan to enter and play in more tournaments so I can improve my score.”

Bo Lee, Taerin’s mom, said she was very proud of her daughter for showing such poise and maturity in competing against much older girls and accomplished players.

“Competing against some the best players was a massive challenge for Taerin but she embraced it completely,” said her mom. “Seeing her hold het own and finish third in this level of competition as just a seventh grader is an incredibly proud moment for our family. She showed so much maturity and heart out there.”

More than 600 seniors accepted their high school diplomas at Syosset High School’s 68th Annual Commencement ceremony, held on Wednesday, June 24, at Hofstra University.

MacArthur senior Generals turn their tassels

Friends gathered for some of their final moments as General Douglas MacArthur High School seniors before their graduation ceremony on June 20.

On June 20, General Douglas MacArthur seniors reached the ultimate achievement of their high school careers as the Class of 2026 crossed the stage to become official graduates.

The Hofstra University David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex was filled with energy as families and loved ones cheered for the momentous occasion and watched the graduates process to their seats. Class President Anthony Ross led the pledge to the flag to open the 65th commencement, and senior choir members gathered on stage to sing the national anthem and give a special choral performance.

Principal Joseph Sheehan commended the Class of 2026’s many achievements and perseverance.

“Today, you stand on the threshold of a new chapter in your lives, filled with dreams,

aspirations and opportunities,” Mr. Sheehan said. “You are well prepared to take your next steps with courage and conviction and make choices that will shape your future and define your impact on the world.”

Before stepping away from the podium, Mr. Sheehan recognized board of education trustee Michael Pappas, who has dedicated 18 years of service to the district. Mr. Sheehan thanked Mr. Pappas for his positive impact on students and staff and named him an honorary General by gifting him a personalized MacArthur jersey.

Superintendent of Schools Todd Winch congratulated graduates and emphasized that their future is shaped by more than their educational

achievements. “The degree you earn, the business you build or the rank you achieve may shape your career,” Mr. Winch said, “but your character will shape every relationship you have, every decision you make, and ultimately, the legacy you leave behind.”

Mr. Winch recognized graduates entering various branches of the United States Armed Forces. These graduates will receive American Flags that were raised at Levittown Memorial Education Center in recognition of the country’s 250th anniversary.

MacArthur salutatorian Sara Duda reflected on the growth she and her peers have made. “Growth rarely happens all at once — it comes little by little through challenges,

"As we step out into the real world, a lot of people are going to try and define success for us," he said, "but if high school has taught us anything, it's that real success is custom built." He closed with the advice, "Find things in life that make you want to work hard and stay true to who you are, even when the pressure is on. Don't let anyone else write your script!"

Student Government President Alexander Cruz Zeferino also addressed the graduating class, reflecting on the friendships, memories and shared experiences that defined their years at Hicksville High School.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of diplomas. One by one, graduates crossed the stage to cheers and applause, celebrating the culmination of years of hard work and the beginning of an exciting new chapter. As caps were tossed into the air, the Hicksville High School Class of 2026 officially embarked on the next stage of their journey.

“Our time at MacArthur has extended far past the academic aspect,” he said. “It was truly about the life lessons and the relationships we formed.”

Valedictorian Meaghan Campbell pondered on a question: “What color school folder belongs to what school subject?” Her peers may have labeled science as green and math as blue, but the color only reduces them to a label — something graduates should avoid doing to themselves, she explained.

“This is your chance to leave

the labels and expectations and create a future that is limitless,” she said. “Be proud of who you are and craft a future that will let you explore who you can be. Science isn’t always green, math isn’t always blue, and you aren’t a static figure.”

Senior band members joined their peers for a performance of “Havendance” directed by Joseph Romano. Memories of graduates’ senior year were recapped in a commemorative video put together by the senior video committee.

“Every choice you make teaches you something, even when the outcome isn’t what you hoped for,” Board President Christina Lang said.

“Those moments often become life’s greatest lessons.”

Each graduate stepped on stage to receive their diploma.

Upon the turning of their tassels and a ceremonious tossing of their caps, seniors officially became graduates of Levittown Schools.

Residents are encouraged to decorate their homes with American flags, patriotic bunting, lights, banners, flowers, and other red, white and blue displays from July 1 through July 14. The Town will also illuminate Town Hall in patriotic colors as a symbol of community pride and national

spirit. Participants are invited to submit photos of their displays by emailing photos@oysterbay-ny.gov. Three winners will be selected from throughout the Town, who will receive a complimentary Town beach pass for the 2027 season.

“As we celebrate America 250, we are reminded that the strength of our nation has always come from its people and communities,” said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino.

Bethpage HS honors Class of 2026 Final grades are in, diplomas have been presented, and tassels have been ceremoniously turned from right to left. The commencement ceremony for Bethpage High School's Class of 2026, held Friday, June 26, on the school's football field, was a spirited yet bittersweet send-off for an exceptional group of students. Now Golden Eagle Alumni, the Class of 2026 is off to new adventures in college, the workforce, and the military.

The ceremony began with the parade of seniors onto the field to the notes of "Pomp and Circumstance," played by the Bethpage High School Band.

Teachers and administrators led the way in Bethpage blue, and the stands were filled with cheering family members and friends, with signs and balloons peppered throughout the crowd.

Principal Nick Jantz served as master of ceremonies, introducing a slate of speakers that included senior class president Isabella Richemond, student council president Sarah Oh, salutatorian Andrew Hacker, valedictorian Gregorio Andres Bonetti, and Superintendent David Scheider. Senior class members Stacy Martinez, Anderson Maziero, Lilbeth Simon, and Melissa Vaquerano performed an a cappella rendition of the national anthem.

The theme of community ran through all the speeches, as speakers reminded the Class of 2026 that the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. “Be the person who welcomes others wholeheartedly. Be the person who reaches out, includes others, and helps create a sense of belonging,” Oh urged. “Because at the end of the day, community doesn't happen by accident.

It is created by people choosing to support one another continuously, every day.”

Bethpage High School Principal Nick Jantz led the ceremony, surrounded by administrators, members of the board of education and class officers.

Principal Jantz congratulated the class on its achievements, noting a 99.6% graduation rate, with 98% of students receiving Regents Diplomas and 70% of those earning the advanced designation. Ninety percent of the class will attend colleges and universities across the country this fall, while others are heading to the military, beginning apprenticeships or entering the workforce.

“As America begins its next 250 years, your generation will write the next chapter,” said Jantz. “Not only

Why Smarter Construction Is Becoming a Major Selling Point

For generations, Long Island homes have been built using familiar materials—wood framing, fiberglass insulation, asphalt shingles, vinyl siding, and traditional drywall. Those materials remain the backbone of residential construction, but today’s homeowners are paying closer attention to what goes into their homes than ever before.

It’s no longer just about granite countertops, luxury kitchens, or open floor plans. Buyers are asking about roof warranties, insulation values, hurricane-resistant windows, flood protection, energy efficiency, and the materials hidden behind the walls.

Several factors are driving this shift.

Utility costs continue to rise, homeowner insurance premiums have increased dramatically, and stronger coastal storms have reminded Long Islanders that durability matters just as much as curb appeal. Add concerns about sustainability and long-term maintenance, and it’s easy to understand why homeowners are embracing a new generation of building materials.

Whether you’re buying a newly constructed home, renovating an older property, or preparing to sell, understanding these materials can make a meaningful difference in both value and long-term ownership costs.

Engineered Wood Products

One of the biggest changes involves engineered wood products.

That’s particularly important in coastal communities like Port Washington, Great Neck, Long Beach, Huntington, Northport, and the Hamptons, where salt air and moisture accelerate exterior wear.

Composite siding products are also attracting homeowners who want the appearance of painted wood without the continual scraping, repainting, and repairs that traditional wood often requires.

For busy families, lower maintenance has become almost as valuable as aesthetics.

Window upgrades

Windows may be one of the smartest upgrades homeowners can make.

Triple-pane windows with Low-E coatings and argon gas insulation dramatically reduce heat loss during Long Island’s cold winters while keeping homes cooler during increasingly hot summers.

Beyond energy savings, many homeowners appreciate the added sound reduction. Anyone living near the Long Island Expressway, Northern State Parkway, Sunrise Highway, railroad tracks, or under airport flight paths quickly notices how much quieter newer windows can make a home.

Energy-efficient windows have become an increasingly important selling feature as buyers focus more closely on monthly ownership costs.

Insulation Improvements

Insulation technology has improved just as dramatically.

Spray foam insulation continues gaining popularity because it seals tiny air leaks around framing, wiring, and plumbing penetrations—places where traditional fiberglass insulation often falls short.

By reducing drafts and improving temperature consistency, spray foam can significantly lower heating and cooling expenses, particularly in older Long Island homes that weren’t originally designed with today’s energy standards in mind.

Mineral wool insulation has also earned a strong reputation for its excellent fire resistance, moisture resistance, and superior soundproofing, making it especially attractive for multifamily homes, accessory dwelling units, and home offices.

Insulated Concrete

Another growing trend involves insulated concrete forms, commonly known as ICF construction.

Although still relatively uncommon on Long Island, ICF homes are drawing increasing attention because reinforced concrete walls provide exceptional resistance to hurricanes, flooding, fire, and high winds.

With severe storms becoming more frequent along the Atlantic coastline, some homeowners view ICF construction as an investment in long-term resilience rather than simply another building option.

Perhaps the most overlooked improvements are the ones buyers never actually see.

Modern weather barriers, flashing systems, waterproof membranes, and moisture-management technologies have dramatically improved how homes resist water intrusion.

For Long Island homeowners, where nor’easters, hurricanes, and wind-driven rain are recurring concerns, proper moisture control can help prevent mold, wood rot, and costly structural damage years before problems become visible.

Experienced home inspectors increasingly recognize these hidden systems as indicators of quality construction.

Interior materials are evolving

Low-VOC paints, flooring, cabinetry, and adhesives have become increasingly popular among homeowners concerned about indoor air quality.

Families with young children, seniors, or allergy sufferers often appreciate products that emit fewer volatile organic compounds into the home’s living environment.

Kitchen surfaces have changed too.

Quartz counter-tops continue replacing natural stone in many remodeling projects because they require virtually no maintenance. Unlike granite, quartz

Flooring has also seen remarkable innovation.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring has become one of the fastest-growing products in residential remodeling throughout Long Island. Engineered hardwood flooring has similarly gained popularity because it tolerates humidity changes far better than traditional solid hardwood.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor living spaces are benefiting from better materials as well.

Composite decking has steadily replaced pressure-treated lumber across much of Long Island.

Manufactured from recycled wood fibers and plastics, composite decking won’t rot, splinter, or require annual staining.

For homeowners who spend summers entertaining outdoors, reducing maintenance while extending deck life represents a worthwhile investment.

Perhaps the biggest change isn’t the materials themselves.

It’s the mindset of today’s buyers.

Ten years ago, buyers primarily focused on finishes they could immediately see. Today, many are asking deeper questions. How energy efficient is the home? Will the roof survive the next major storm? Are the windows hurricane rated? Has the insulation been upgraded? What kind of siding was installed? How much maintenance will this property require over the next decade?

These questions reflect a growing understanding that true homeownership costs extend well beyond the monthly mortgage payment.

For Long Island sellers, investing in durable, energy-efficient materials before listing a property can often make a home stand out in a competitive market. Buyers recognize quality construction, and many are willing to pay a premium for homes that promise lower maintenance, improved comfort, and greater resilience.

The homes commanding the strongest interest today aren’t necessarily the ones with the most extravagant finishes. They’re the homes built—or thoughtfully updated—with materials that perform well in Long Island’s Continued on page 5

Divorced Men and Social Security

Over the 29 years I’ve been writing this column, I have probably written a hundred columns directed at divorced women. But after answering some emails this week from men who had questions about benefits for divorcees, it dawned on me that I’ve almost never written a column for divorced men. And so today, I’ll make up for that.

At the outset, I should point out that I will be concentrating on the benefits a husband’s ex-wife can receive from his Social Security account -- and the effects those benefits have on his own Social Security or on benefits due to a subsequent wife. Why? Because those are the kinds of questions I get from divorced men.

I will briefly cover what benefits a divorced man might be due on his ex-wife’s Social Security record. But frankly, that rarely happens. Because women traditionally have earned less than men, and because women take time off from their careers to raise children, they end up with smaller Social Security benefits on their own record, which is why there are millions of women getting benefits off a husband’s or ex-husband’s Social Security account. But there are only a handful of men getting spousal benefits from a wife’s record.

If you are that rare, divorced man whose ex-wife consistently made more money than you, meaning she is due a higher Social Security benefit than you are, then the same eligibility rules for divorced women would also apply to you.

What rules?

First of all, you’ve got to be old enough, which means at least age 60 for divorced widows and widowers and at least age 62 for a wife or husband whose ex-spouse is still alive. Second, the marriage to the ex must have lasted at least 10 years. Third, you can’t be currently married. (If you remarried after the divorce, but that second marriage ended and you are unmarried now, you are potentially eligible for benefits from the first ex.) And fourth, you can’t be due higher benefits on your own Social Security account. However, there can be an exception to this rule for widows and widowers.

Here is a quick example. Bob is 62 and just retired. He is divorced and never remarried. He has learned that his ex-wife recently died. His own retirement benefit is higher than hers was. But he would have the option of taking reduced divorced widower’s benefits now and then switch to his own full retirement benefits at 67 or even higher benefits at 70.

But as I said, men very rarely qualify for divorced spousal benefits. And that’s why a divorced man’s interest in Social Security rules for divorcees almost always has to do with how his ex might qualify for divorced spousal benefits from him and how it affects his own benefits. Here are some sample questions.

Q: My first wife and I were married

for 30 years before getting divorced 5 years ago. I have remarried. My ex hasn’t. She is 62 years old. My current wife is 45. I am 65 and not yet drawing Social Security. My ex says she is going to file against my Social Security.

Can she do that without my permission?

A: Your ex-wife does not need your permission to file for divorced wife’s benefits on your record. If the law says she’s due benefits, she’ll get them no matter what you say. So if she is not currently working, she’ll be due benefits on your record unless her own retirement benefit pays her a higher rate. And by the way, your ex can file for benefits on your account even if you haven’t filed yourself.

Q: My wife and I are about to turn 67. We are thinking of filing for Social Security. My wife’s own benefit is so small, I’m sure she will get higher benefits on my record. But I was married once before and my ex-wife is already getting divorced wife’s benefits on my account. Is that going to reduce what my current wife will be due on my record?

A: No, it won’t. Any benefits paid to an ex-spouse are just “add-on” benefits. They don’t take anything away from what you are due or what your current wife will be due on your record.

Q: I am 76 years old. I waited until I was 70 to file for Social Security. The primary reason I did this is so my wife will get the highest widow’s benefits possible when I die. But I just learned that my first wife, to whom I was married for 20 years, is going to get half of my benefits upon my death. And my current wife will have to settle for the other half. This doesn’t seem fair.

A: Well, it might not be fair if it were true. But it’s not true. When you die, your current wife will get 100% of your benefit -- assuming she is over her full retirement age when you die. And assuming your ex hasn’t remarried and is over her full retirement age and isn’t due higher benefits on her own record, she also will get the 100% widow’s rate. As explained above, any benefits paid to your ex do not offset any benefits due to your current wife.

Q: I can’t believe my ex-wife is getting my Social Security. When we divorced in 2018, I very specifically added a clause to the divorce decree stating that my wife would not be able to get any of my Social Security. And yet now I learned she’s telling her friends she is getting benefits on my account. I’m going to call my lawyer to stop this!

A: You can call your lawyer if you want. But you aren’t going to stop this.

That clause you added to your divorce decree isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Federal law overrides anything you or your lawyer might scribble onto your divorce papers. And if that law says your ex is due spousal benefits on your account,

she’s going to get them.

Q: I’ve been married and divorced five times. Is each of my ex-wives going to get some of my Social Security?

No wonder the system is going broke!

A: Actually, it’s pretty uncommon for more than one ex to get benefits on your account. Why? Because the only way all your ex-wives would collect on your record is if they all have remained unmarried and if all of them have never worked.

Or to put that another way, all your exes who have remarried and all of your exes

who have worked and will get their own Social Security won’t be collecting divorced spousal benefits from you.

Taking fantastic trips on our summer vacations

BY CLAIRE LYNCH Some of the best vacations my family took when I was a kid were the casual vacations that didn’t need a whole lot of planning - no plane tickets or railroad tickets, we just packed the car and went. They were summertime trips when we kids were off from school and my dad had two weeks off from work.

I remember when we headed northwest to see Niagara Falls where I stood mesmerized watching the falls. Some of us kids kept asking, “Are we there yet?” naturally because after a couple of hours we started getting bored but mom kept us occupied. Suddenly there we were on the NY side of the Falls looking over at Canada.

It’s pretty breathtaking and as we stood there admiring the view a slight drizzle started. We put our ponchos on and when the rain picked up in intensity we pulled our ponchos around us.

Seeing the Falls in the rain gave us a different perspective on the attraction.

To say it was pretty cool is an understatement.

Another time we drove to Corning, NY, where one of our first stops was the Corning Museum of Glass. After checking into our hotel we couldn’t wait to see the demonstrations of the artists blowing glass and fashioning it into vases, glasses and sculptures.

The workers impressed us with their talent as they heated the glass, rolled it ever so carefully, snipped it at the end and then let the pieces cool off.

The whole process was amazing and we admired their creativity.

There were day trips to Rye Playland in Westchester County, just a 45-minute drive from Long Island, and we spent hours riding the Ferris wheel, the roller coaster and carousel.

We took our time walking from vendor to vendor and some of us got ice cream and others got big bags of popcorn. Sometimes we went to Rye Playland after dinner and I remember thinking that spending a few hours there on a summer’s evening overlooking the Long Island Sound was pretty dreamy. And we got a bird’s-eye view of the Sound from atop the Ferris wheel.

Another trip we took was to see the Connecticut River in Suffield, Ct. up close and personally. My dad had a friend at work named Ted and his family lived close to NYC but they had a summer house in Suffield. Just down the street from Ted and Jan’s home was a good place on the banks of the Connecticut River to go fishing.

My dad made the arrangements with Ted to visit in July and he assured dad that he had a fishing license. It was his favorite way to relax so sure we could visit and he’d showed us his fishing technique.

My father was a city boy so knowing how to fish was new to him. Ted and dad went to the Town Hall so dad could get an out-of-state visitor’s fishing license then we all hopped in the car and went fishing. Jan loaned us three of her grandchildren’s fishing rods plus

we helped get the pails of water, the bait and miscellaneous things. We were pleased to watch a “fishing expert” like Ted cast a line and wait patiently for something to bite.

When it did, he shouted out and we watched as he reeled in the fish. Once he had the prize in his hand he’d say if it was a striped bass, carp, shad or catfish. Ted always tossed the fish back in the Connecticut River and he’d wait for another prize to appear.

My dad did okay as a novice fisherman and a couple of hours later when my younger sister, Susan, who was nine then, reeled in a carp we all jumped for joy.

Going there was a learning experience and we kids were eager to learn. It was fun and we especially liked seeing several people go down the river in boats, kayaks and rafts. They’d wave at us and we’d smile and wave back.

As we stood on the shores of the Connecticut River Ted explained that it runs south for about 407 miles through four states - New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut - and empties into the Long Island Sound.

I was impressed - that sounded like a long river. Sure we’d seen the Hudson River and the East River in NYC plus we’d crossed the Delaware River a couple of times on our way from Rockville Centre to see some relatives who lived near Harrisburg, Pa. My parents, two sisters and I stayed at Ted and Jan’s house for four nights.

in Rockville Centre since they were old enough to be on their own and never got into trouble. Having a great time, we didn’t want to leave but Ted and Jan laughingly reminded us that vacations only last for so long.

As we chatted over meals, they said they had four grandkids who lived out of state and were visiting two weeks later so they had plenty of room plus games for kids our age. When Jan opened the closet and pulled out “Clue,” “Chutes and Ladders,” “Candy Land” and “Trouble,” she asked which one we’d like to play first. We all clapped and took a few minutes to decide.

Each night Ted and Jan cooked dinner on the back yard barbecue and before they grilled some chicken pieces and beef kabobs, we heard Jan and my mom chatting as they prepared potato salad, macaroni salad, a big tossed salad, etc. We kids liked to hang around and eavesdrop as we listened to the adults’ stories.

One day Ted and Jan took us into town and we had lunch at the local diner, another time we got bowls of ice cream or root beer floats and we lingered over tables in the air-conditioned shop. Jan asked us about school and Michelle, my older sister, had just joined the softball team so she told everyone about that.

Faces and personalities stand out in my memory from summer vacations.

It’s not just the places but the people who made a difference.

This summer, fresh ingredients like avocado and tomatoes can be just what people need when looking for a delicious

meal that won’t adversely affect their energy levels. The following recipe for “Bruschetta Topped With Avocado and Tomatoes” from Lines+Angles employs both foods and can make a great addition to any summertime dinner table.

Makes 4 to 6 servings

2 large Hass avocados, ripe, pitted, peeled, and cubed 4 vine tomatoes, cored, seeded, and diced 1 shallot, finely chopped 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, drained and diced 2 to 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

2 to 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for brushing 1 large baguette, cut into 1-inch thick slices 1 small bunch basil, leaves only, finely sliced Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper

1) Combine the cubed avocado with the tomato, shallot, mozzarella, balsamic vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil, and plenty of seasoning in a mixing bowl.

2) Stir and toss to combine, adding more vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil as needed.

Set aside until needed.

3) Preheat the broiler to hot.

Lightly brush the baguette slices with olive oil before toasting under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown.

4) Remove bread slices and leave to cool briefly. Carefully spoon the avocado bruschetta mix on top and serve with a garnish of sliced basil on top.
