Town Board discusses next steps in reopening process

During the Town of Oyster Bay meeting, held with a purposeful ‘physical distancing setup’ at Town Hall on Tuesday, June 2, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said the Town operations and area businesses have begun a gradual un-PAUSE per New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s guidelines. The supervisor promoted the Town’s schedule for June drive-in movies at various locations before providing statistics on a most-welcome decline in the COVID-19 infection rate and case count in Nassau County.

“There are currently 40,479 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nassau County and at this point, as the County continues to test people -- about 3% of the Nassau County population has been certified as infected with COVID-19.

A total 181,234 people had been tested in Nassau County as of yesterday (June 1) and the number of new positive test cases continues to drop and this is a BIG PIECE of good news….fewer than 2% of COVID-19 tests the week of May 25 through 31st resulted in a positive case, and that is a drop of 75% from four weeks ago,” Saladino announced at the meeting.

Tuesday, June 2 marked the 50th day of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in Nassau County, marking the longest streak for this decline within any region of

New York State during the pandemic. Saladino said as of June 2, there were 300 people in Nassau County hospitalized due to the virus and there were 364 hospitalized as of Thursday, May 28, representing a 17% decline over five days. As of this week 84 people were in intensive care units in Nassau County due to COVID-19, but last Thursday that number was at 127.

On June 2, 65 people were on ventilators in hospitals Countywide, while on May 28 the number was 98 people on ventilators.

“COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths continue to drop statewide, with 3,301 COVID-19 patients in New York hospitals as of June 2 -- compared with last Thursday, May 28, which saw a number of 4,208 with a drop of 877 patients, a 21% decline,” he commented.

The heavy death toll in Nassau County as of June 1 was 2,125 people. Supervisor Saladino said the hearts of all Town Board members, all local elected officials, Town employees and the general public go out to each family and relative suffering with “consequences of this horror.”

He reports that on June 1, EMS ambulance call volume was similar to the number of calls June 2, 2019.

At its in-person meeting on Tuesday morning, June 2, the full complement of six Town Board members and Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino opened a public hearing to consider a new Local Law for apartments on the second story of store spaces, amending Chapter 246 of the Code of the Town of Oyster Bay regarding Zoning (section 246-5.5.5 and Section 246-5.2). This proposed legislation was outlined as a way of supporting downtown economic activities and revitalizations as the pandemic slows as the Town encourages a boost for local businesses and communities. Other Town and Chamber initiatives align with the collaborative, wide-ranging effort.

Saladino began the June 2 meeting with the news from state government, as in the last week of May Long Island entered Phase 1 of reopening plans for construction, manufacturing, retail store openings for curbside pickups, and other commercial services. A major component of Town outreach now is reminding residents of the benefits of shopping in their home areas.

“It is critical for everyone to get back out and shop locally -- we support the return of small businesses. We urge you to support the local mom and pop shops, local stores in neighborhoods. Let’s help them get back to good health,” he said.

Regarding the proposed amendment

to Town Code, Elizabeth L. Maccarone, commissioner in the Town Department of Planning and Development, explained that building or configuring apartments on top of stores and offices would be eliminated from “downtown business district-use” regulations, however Town Code would allow this type of use to still be heard in front of the Town Board for special use permits.

“This will allow us more oversight.

Whether it’s apartments over stores in downtown or commercial zone corridors, there isn’t a ‘one-size-fits-all’ application. There are times we need oversight over applications coming in for apartments over stores and offices and their density -- as well as the proximity of those locations to adjoining residential zones. Where a commercial property ends and a residential property begins, we have seen applicants trying to come in under current zoning code to allow for high-density applications as right now it remains a permitted use and there would not be oversight by the Town Board, Zoning Board of Appeals or Planning Advisory Board,” she said.

Town Councilman Tom Hand said one concern that came up with a recent application in downtown Oyster Bay, noted by the Oyster Bay Downtown Association, was the associated parking and waste storage areas for such a housing development. Currently the

Town code only requires one parking space for every apartment unit planned, but there’s no breakdown accommodating studios, one-bedrooms or two-bedrooms.

“In successful other downtown areas there have been problems with parking -- moratoriums were enacted to study the effects of a lot of apartment units and not having proper parking,” Maccarone told the Board.

According to Supervisor Saladino, the Code amendment would continue downtown revitalizations through creation of better public information and accessibility as the public can come out to hearings. “This legislation will allow the process to closely match the model that we’ve been working on for three years for the downtowns, and it encourages better participation from business owners, residents, and our local Chambers of Commerce….we will do many other bills to continue creating a process to better revitalize our downtowns,” he said.

Chief Deputy Town Attorney Frank Scalera said the opportunity in mind is assisting downtowns across Oyster Bay, “at the same balancing that assistance with transparency and further input by both the local residents and interested parties as well as the Town Board.”

“Based upon other provisions of the Town Code and the building/zoning

code any property owners in downtowns looking to do apartments located over stores and/or offices will still be permitted through the special use permit process,” he said.

The record for public comments on the proposed local law will remain open until Friday, June 12.

No comments on the zoning change were read aloud during the June 2 Board meeting.

Town Initiatives Take Shape

Town functions remain 100% active as operations support community economic activity. Supervisor Saladino noted that Town departments and employees have not missed a single day of garbage, sorted recycling or yard waste pickups during the pandemic’s closures of most of society. “We continue to have all Sanitation and Public Works employees on the job, and our Public Safety employees have done a fabulous job of keeping our residents safe,” Saladino said.

er update from major New York area healthcare system Northwell Health, which operates 11 hospitals on Long Island including Plainview Hospital, Syosset Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, Huntington Hospital as well as Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.

“Northwell reported one COVID-19 death on Monday June 1. Overall New York State’s COVID-19 numbers continue showing great improvements in fighting the virus -- the numbers are down to levels similar to when the crisis began (early March). Statewide, 54 people died in New York on June 1. On April 9, that same category peaked with tremendous losses -- 800 deaths in one day” he said.

From a makeshift desk that he and three other elected officials sat at in front of the Town Board’s dais -- all distanced by six feet-- Councilman Steve Labriola asked for an update for the procedures around public participation and receipt of comments on all Town business, hearings and resolutions. He

said at Town Hall the meeting room of the Town Board has a legal (per fire code) capacity of 296 people and going forward, even allowing a percentage of the total capacity would at least be allowing in over 50 or 75 people if physical distancing was thoroughly planned inside. That way people can participate to a normal extent, at least in some form, rather than submitting their comments prior to meetings and Board discussions.

Deputy Town Attorney Matt Rozea said there are some recent guidelines from the New York State Department of Health and Empire State Development about the number of people that can gather in different settings. Ultimately the discussion devolved and Councilman Louis Imbroto, an attorney by profession, said there should be written correspondence directed to the Town Attorney and his staff so they can investigate the potential for the Town government and any forms of public assembly, including meetings on the horizon.

Levittown junior selected for scholarship opportunities

Abani Ahmed, a junior from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools, was recently recognized for her academic excellence with two prestigious distinctions. She was selected as a 2020 College Prep Scholar from QuestBridge and a Rensselaer Medal award recipient from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Ahmed is one of 3,779 students to be

named a College Prep Scholar from a pool of more than 12,600 juniors. Each year, students are selected as a result of their academic excellence, personal qualities and financial need. The notable distinction shows the program’s 42 college partners that Ahmed is a strong candidate for admission. She also has the potential to be an exceptional candidate for the QuestBridge National College Match. This college admission and scholarship process gives students the opportunity to be admitted early with a full four-year scholarship to one of the nation’s best colleges.

As a College Prep Scholar, Ahmed received an invitation to a virtual National College Admissions Conference and was nominated to receive special programming opportunities for QuestBridge’s college partners, such as expense-paid campus visits. She will receive a certificate of achievement, a workbook for the national conference and information about the program’s college partners.

In addition, Ahmed was designated a Rensselaer Medal winner from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The prestigious award is granted to students who show excellence in mathematics and science. If she chooses to apply to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is admitted, Ahmed will receive a scholarship worth $30,000 per year for four years. She will receive a certificate later this summer as a result of her achievement.

The Oyster Bay Town Board met on Tuesday, June 2nd. Officials are sitting at improvised desks six feet or more apart, and the meeting is broadcast to the public via livestream.

The Town attorneys said there’s a likelihood of new regulations and state guidance taking shape before the Town

Board meets again on June 16, and the subject may arise again soon for further considerations.

Outstanding Levittown student artists featured in virtual exhibit

Six talented student-artists from the Levittown Public Schools were selected as exhibiting artists in the 2020 Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum program. Senior Emily Fuchs and junior Caitlyn Bella from Division Avenue High School, juniors Nicole Amatulli and Van Hoang Le and sophomores Diane Gavrylyuk and Katelyn Smith from General Douglas MacArthur High School had

their artwork featured in the virtual exhibit on the Heckscher Museum’s website.

This year, 388 students from 58 Nassau and Suffolk county high schools entered their artwork into the contest.

The six Levittown students were among 100 students selected for their outstanding art. Prior to submitting their pieces, students were asked to visit the museum, observe the artwork and find one to draw inspiration from. They each wrote an artist statement to accompany their piece which was equally as important as the artwork itself in determining whether or not they earned a spot in the exhibit.

With the guidance of their art teacher Tim Ryan, both Division Avenue students submitted their pieces made out of gouache on paper. Fuchs’ artwork was entitled “Fulfilling my Commitments,” while Bella’s was called “Casey’s Return.” Amatulli, a student in Rebecca Muir’s class, submitted a digital photograph entitled “Reflecting.” Hoang Le and Gavrylyuk, students in Tom Bobal’s class, submitted a folded paper collage called “A Journey’s Ending” and a colored pencil, nupastel and acrylic piece called “Identity in Red,” respectively.

With the guidance of her teacher Lynn Spinnato, Smith submitted a ceramic piece she titled “Bittersweet.”

The students were honored at the museum’s virtual opening reception and awards ceremony on Instagram Live. Online viewers were also able to cast their votes on their favorite artwork from the exhibit.

Town of Oyster Bay to sponsor blood drive in Hicksville Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier today announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Monday, June 29th, to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 9:00am to 7:00pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S. Broadway, Hicksville). All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations.

“Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during the coronavirus pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.”

The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing

and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive.

“Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.”

Council and Supervisor Saladino joined the Town of Hempstead Council, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin, Town Clerk Kate Murray and mayors from across the County for a ‘New York Reopening’ press conference. The need for outdoor dining to be included for Long Island’s Phase 2 of Reopening was much of the reason driving this collaborative message.

Saladino says the Town of Oyster Bay is determined to help businesses “get open and remove any hurdles, so that we can restore our economy.”

“We are coming back and the Town of Oyster Bay is tremendously committed to helping businesses reopen and getting people re-employed. We have an employment program in the Town where we help with training, resume writing and brushing up on skills to re-enter the workforce or to look for employers looking to hire. The Town can be contacted for this information and more,” Saladino said.

Chamber Remains Proactive

Woodbury resident Maureen Nickel, business owner of BrightStar Home Health Care and 2020 president of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce, listened on Tuesday to the Town government’s message of support for small business. She advises that the web, electronic messaging and virtual platforms have played a major role in continuing to drive customers to local businesses.

“It is our sincere hope that the months ahead bring forth a fresh new start, a rebirth, a strengthening of mind and spirit and a much needed economic boost.

The Syosset Woodbury Chamber is dedicated to helping our members during this challenging time. Using social media platforms, our website and weekly emails, we are getting the word out to the community and they are responding by engaging with member businesses.We also are holding bi-weekly virtual networking meetings giving

each member the opportunity to explain something “special“ about their business. In this way we are getting to know each other in a more personal way, understand each other‘s business needs and thus become a valuable referral source for each other. We are in this together!” she said.

A short time after the shutdowns of non-essential businesses, the Syosset Woodbury Chamber invited each of its members to a virtual meeting hosted by the U.S. Small Business Association based at Farmingdale State College with Chamber member Lauren Linakis. That initial seminar provided valuable information on how Chamber member businesses could apply for PPP and EIDL loans and a Q & A session for detailed guidance.

“Our strong relationship with the SBA continues to provide information on loan forgiveness and the additional boost loans now available to small business owners. In lieu of our fall Street Fair, we will be focused on strengthening the exposure of our local busi-

nesses through collaborative marketing efforts, offering Value Added Services and budget-friendly opportunities that will highlight member businesses through social media and print campaigns,” Nickel said this week.

Small businesses were assured that the Town of Oyster Bay will also work to facilitate a return to operations.

“We are here to help our businesses get back up and running, and the Town continues to lobby and demand from New York State officials that we get back to business and to protect our economy while still protecting the health and safety of all our residents.

Safety protocols have been put in place in every aspect of Town government, and my colleagues on the Town Board have welcomed several of our local merchants back. We let them know how much they have been missed and how we are committed to seeing everyone getting back to work in a safe and productive manner,” Saladino explained Tuesday.

College Notes Justin George, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2020, has earned the fall 2019 Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence.

George is a graduate of Chaminade High School, and is from East Norwich.

Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.3 or higher while completing at least three courses earn the fall 2019 Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. n

Sarah Garner, of Syosset, has been named to the Elmira College Dean’s List for the Winter 2020 Term. Full-time undergraduate students registered for at least 12 computable credit hours and earning a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher at the end of Term I or Term II are placed on the Dean’s List at the College. n

Kristen Collins of Hicksville, was inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society on April 16th. Collins, who is majoring in Business Economics, is a member of the Softball team at SUNY Oneonta.

Collins was one of 33 scholar-athletes inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma as part of NCAA Division III Week. To qualify for induction into Chi Alpha Sigma, a student must have achieved at least junior standing with a cumulative 3.4 grade point average while earning two varsity letters in an NCAA intercollegiate sport. Each student athlete must also be of good moral character and have the endorsement of both the head coach of his or her sport and the chapter president. n

Mary Elizabeth Pizzimenti ’21 has received a National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) Fellowship for the 2019-20 academic year. She is one of fifteen college students nationwide to receive the competitive prize.

An Italian minor at Manhattan College, Pizzimenti enjoys the personal attention students receive within the program. “Students are able to take an independent study course where the professors make connections with the students in order to focus on their strengths and interests,” Pizzimenti explained. “It is this relationship that convinced me that a minor in Italian would be fun and expand my horizons.” n

Ariana Kazanjian of Syosset, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Kazanjian was initiated at Fordham University. n

Wisdom Lane students named winners in essay contest Three students from Wisdom Lane Middle School were recently recognized as winners in a regional essay contest. The students, who are members of the school’s Earth and Space Club, placed first, second and third in the contest which is sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Space Systems Technical committee.

The winners of the contest were 8th grader, Alex Gao, who placed first, 8th grader, Dylan Muterspaw and 7th grader, Ashley Wilson, who placed second and third respectively.

Vanessa Kowalczyk, science teacher at Wisdom Lane, said she was proud of the students hard work and innovation with their essay writing.

“Ms. (Leslie) Maynard and I can’t express enough how proud we are of these students who display a love for science with their participation in the SSTC essay contest,” said Kowalczyk.

“They represent the hard work and passion that we consider ourselves lucky to witness as teachers. It’s truly wonderful to see their efforts recognized by the AIAA said SSTC.” Since 2015, the two teachers have helped guide students in the club to submit their entries into the essay contest. At least one student every year has won at the regional level and some have earned national recognition for their submissions.

For this year’s contest, students were instructed to write, in 1,000 words or less, how advanced they think Space technology and exploration will be in fifty years.

The grading criteria is based on a student’s original idea, soundness of logic to develop an idea, realism of the idea and the quality of the composition.

Gao said that it felt good to be recognized in the essay contest after putting a lot of thought and effort into his submission.

“When I was writing the essay, I wasn’t expecting much out of it, so getting first place was really surprising,” said Gao. “Now I’m keeping my hopes up for a potential victory in the national contest.”

In his essay, he focused on two central topics that he thought was interesting and likely in the future of space exploration.

“Those focuses were on asteroid mining and commercial space travel,” said Gao. “I said that the potential possibilities of extracting raw materials from asteroids is endless, and that it would develop the world and all of humanity.

In regards to commercial space travel, I predicted that a price of a trip into space would likely decrease dramatically to the point of it being affordable to an ordinary person and not only celebrities and rich people.”

Ashley Wilson said she started writing her essay about some of humanity’s many accomplishments in space exploration in the past sixty years and challenges we can look forward to.

“My favorite planet in our galaxy is Mars and it’s also the closest planet to colonize near Earth. I wrote about the many challenges to reach our destination in the near future,” said Wilson. “I also touched upon the many ways on how we might possibly be able to overcome these challenges that lay ahead of us.”

She said she was shocked that she came in third place and is very proud of her accomplishment.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized in the SSTC contest this year. I am still

trying to wrap my head around I came in third place. It really was an incredible experience and I learned many new things about our galaxy. This is one of my passions and I will continue to study and research about our wonderful but mysterious space.”

Dylan Muterspaw essay focused on combining virtual reality technology with space exploration technology.

“It felt really great to be recognized as a winner in this contest,” said Muterspaw. “I didn’t think I was going to win so it came as kind of a shock to me.”

The three students will receive a total of $600 for their submissions in the essay contest.

Gao and Wilson’s essays will move on to compete at the national level for a chance to win an additional cash prize as well as recognition in AIAA’s international Aerospace America magazine.

Town of Oyster Bay to sponsor blood drive in Hicksville Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier today announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Monday, June 29th, to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 9:00am to 7:00pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 S. Broadway, Hicksville). All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations.

“Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during the coronavirus pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be

critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.”

The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids

in the days before the Blood Drive.

“Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals

can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.”

Hicksville Public Schools host "reverse parades"

From the Class of 2020 Senior Parade to the “reverse parades” held at each of Hicksville’s school buildings, it was clear – all in attendance felt an overwhelming sense of what it meant to be a school community again. Each school invited faculty and staff to meet on school grounds while parents and students drove past. There were cars

festooned with balloons, posters of every size and shape, streamers, and students and teachers waving, horns honking, cheers as students, parents and teachers recognized each other, and big, broad smiles, not even the masks could hide. For a brief time, our school communities were united.

“Everyone has such a good time,” explained East Street’s Principal Jean-Marie Serra. “Saturday’s parade brought so much joy to everyone who attended.

Teachers, staff members, parents and students were delighted to see each other.”

At the high school, the Class of 2020 led a robust vehicle parade along Division Avenue as faculty and staff stood along the lawn and street in front of the school.

“The core and fiber of education is rooted in connection,” shared Principal Raymond Williams. “Connectivity ignites motivation and motivation leads to success. The Senior Parade in all its simplicity recaptured the connectivity that is essential for a school community to thrive. It’s the feeling of belonging, the feeling that one matters, the feeling that the #Class of 2020 Is Not Cancelled.”

“To some a school is a building, to others an institution,” commented Burns Avenue Principal Dr. John Comer. “Our ‘Reverse Parade’ confirmed what we already knew, Burns Avenue is more than a building. We are more than chairs and desks. We are a group of diverse individuals united and focused on the same goal, providing youngsters with the foundation to achieve the American Dream.

Even though the doors might be locked, our hearts and minds are open. The Parade reminds us, we are all a part of something bigger and more important than ourselves.”

On May 5th, Lee Avenue held its car parade. “I just want to say how much it meant to me that so many of you came to our parade to show our students how much they mean to you and how much you are missing them,” said Principal Stephanie Stam of her faculty and staff.

“The students were so happy to see your faces. The signs and decorations you made put smiles on their faces.

You were amazing!”

“The Hicksville Middle School ‘Sea of Hearts’ parade was a special moment in a time that continues to challenge us,” commented Principal Mara Jorisch. “The smiles on students’, parents’ and staff faces showed us all how much we mean to each other and how much we have missed each other. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us. It was very evident that the students and parents enjoyed seeing everyone and we could not have asked for better weather.”

On Saturday, May 9th, Woodland parents drove to the school’s car parade so their children could see their teachers. “The day could not have been more perfect,” said Principal Beth Swanson. “The Woodland staff came out in full force to see the faces of our students and families that we love and miss so much. Through smiles and tears we all waved as each car came passing through the parking lot of our very special school. It’s a day that all of us will never forget.”

With Teaching Assistant Janet Clifford by his side, Principal Chris Scardino welcomed staff, parents, and students to Fork Lane’s “Reverse Parade.” “The much anticipated Fork Lane Parade came when all students, staff and parents NEEDED a personal connection that was safe,” explained Principal Scardino. “We did just that, an organized flow with teacher waves/signs to a full capacity family crowd one-by-one safely in their fully decorated cars. It was exactly what the doctor ordered!

Police presence from our friendly POP officer that provided safety and the bright lights on his car only added to the excitement! The 12 noon parade was a week-end highlight only falling second to our Mother’s Day wishes for all those caring/hardworking MOMS!”

Jonas E. Salk Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools was re-designated as a National School of Character

by Character.org. This year, 84 schools and 7 districts from 15 states earned the distinction. Jonas E. Salk Middle School is only one of three New York schools to be selected. This is the second time that the school earned the national title, the first being in 2016.

To receive the high honor, schools and school districts must meet Character.org’s 11 Principles. The principles were developed by school leaders and character development researchers to serve as a guide for schools throughout the country to plan, implement, assess and sustain their character development initiative. Building administrators and staff members from Jonas E. Salk Middle School applied for re-designation and the school received a site visit by a Character.org representative who pushed into classrooms, spoke with students, staff and parents.

Jonas E. Salk Middle School selected as School of Character

Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s R.I.S.E. program (Respect and responsibility,Integrity, Safety and staying healthy and Empathy). The program is committed to fostering each students’ social-emotional development and create opportunities for academic excellence, civic education and the development of moral character. This year, the school created R.I.S.E. Day which is held once every quarter and focuses on one of the R.I.S.E. themes for the entire school day. Students participate in teambuilding, problem-solving and social-emotional activities.

The middle school also started a R.I.S.E. newsletter based on each quarter’s theme. Students who demonstrate the theme receive a R.I.S.E. Award and are highlighted in the newsletter.

Outstanding students also receive a postcard in the mail from their teacher acknowledging them for their excellent character.

In addition, students participate in Middle School 101, a push-in program to give them the tools they need to succeed, and some engage in a book club. The club allows students to reflect on social-emotional learning through literature. The school also continues to host its Challenger Athletic League in partnership with General Douglas MacArthur High School. The league invites secondary students with special needs to participate in competitive athletics.

Moving forward, the staff at Jonas E. Salk Middle School hopes to expand their character education practices to other schools in the district.

“We are very proud of being awarded our re-certification as a National School of Character,” said school psychologist Barbara Monteiro-Grady. “Our R.I.S.E. program continues to flourish as seen by the continuous growth of our SEL programs and student/community involvement. We look forward to continuing to expand our R.I.S.E. program through other schools in the district.”

Verizon store burglarized

Nassau County Police are investigating a burglary which took place at the Verizon store on Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury on May 30th.

According to detectives Second Precinct police on patrol discovered a broken window with an alarm ringing at the Verizon Wireless store located at 8223 Jericho Turnpike. An investigation revealed that unknown subject (s) made entry into the store by breaking a side window and removing assorted

cell phones on display valued at $ 5,800.

The unknown subject(s) also removed a locked box that contained an undetermined amount of US currency that was near the register. The subject(s) fled in an unknown direction. The investigation is ongoing.

Detectives request that anyone with information regarding the above crime to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1 – 800 -244 – TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Plainview author releases second novel on Amazon

Plainview resident, Tracy Stopler, who wrote the Amazon bestseller, ‘The Ropes That Bind,’ has recently released her second novel entitled, ‘My Brother Javi: A Dog’s Tale.’ The story is based on two dogs who overcome a series of trials and tribulations but never give up on their dreams.

“These two dogs, who are brother and sister named Javi and Binah, hear about this thing called ‘Melancollie’ from their mama,” said Stopler, who is an adjunct professor at Adelphi University and a registered dietitian. “It’s kind of a play on words but means the same thing in dogs terms. It’s sadness and pensiveness and something the mother tells them they don’t want to ever have or live with.”

Javi is a 9 year old Shih Tzu and the character is based on a dog that Stopler used to own before it passed away in 2011. Binah, which means understanding in Hebrew, is a Havanese and the baby sister of Javi.

“I got Binah a few months after Javi passed, and I think only a dog lover could understand my need to honor his memory in this book. All of the other

characters in the book are also based on dogs that live in the Plainview area.

Stopler said that she reached out to a Facebook public group called, Life Is Short...Get A Dog, and she posted a bunch of their photos in the back of the book. She also contacted the Long Island Dog Parent group on Facebook, and has photos of many of their dogs throughout the book.

“I think it’s kind of nice because everyone gets to see a photo of their dog throughout the whole book,” said Stopler.

In the book, both Javi and Binah live in a house in Plainview with their human named Tali.

The two dogs have distinct personalities, with Javi being the serious one and full of wisdom. He is also a guide and educator to his younger sister. Binah has more of a goofball personality and is always telling jokes and pulling pranks on the other dogs in the neighborhood.

“Javi has this crazy dream throughout the book that he wants to become a human boy,” said Stopler. “He has this diary that he writes in and it captures the ups and downs of being a dog with a dream.”
