My life ... E C BATEMAN, AUTHOR OF THE STAMFORD MYSTERIES SERIES

How would you describe yourself ? Just someone who’s trying to write books whilst parenting a toddler who’s ideologically opposed to napping. Oh, and I really like cake. Where is home? And work? I live in a little cottage in a village close to Uppingham with my husband, the aforementioned toddler, and our cocker spaniel, Audrey. Both dog and toddler are very badly behaved, but so adorable they somehow manage to get away with it. Work is wherever I am; usually at the kitchen table or, if I feel like a change of scene, I venture out to one of our area’s great coffee shops. There’s nothing like an oat milk vanilla latte and background buzz to get the creative juices flowing. What did you want to be when you were younger? I always wanted to do something creative; my old school reports are full of teachers moaning about my daydreaming during lessons! When I was quite little, I wanted to be an actress, but then I hit my teens and developed stage fright. I can’t imagine what I was thinking now; besides, I’m a famously terrible liar. Then I wanted to be a florist…until I found out how early they have to get up in the morning, and that put paid to that. I did my degree in Art History, and that’s the direction I was planning to go in career-wise, until life decided it had other plans for me! If I wasn’t a writer, I’d probably be something like a curator, or a fashion historian. Although by marrying an auctioneer (Emily’s husband is Greg Bateman of Batemans Auctioneers in Stamford) I’m still involved in that world, even if not in the way I’d imagined. Life works in mysterious ways! Name a few of your favourite places to be... Most of my venturing out is done in the daytime these days; I love Scandimania (in Uppingham and Stamford) and Otters in Oakham - the latter are brilliant with small children. When we get a night off, my husband and I often go to The Finch’s Arms in Hambleton; it’s where we had our second date, so it’s a special place. Further afield, the Isle of Wight has a piece of my soul. We go every spring, when the bluebells are carpeting the woods. It’s heaven.

It’s the little things and interactions in life which often set off our imaginations rather than the big events

What or who inspires you? It’s a cliché for authors to say that we’re inspired by everything, but it really is true. It’s the little things and interactions in life which often set off our imaginations rather than the big events. I think it’s helpful as a writer if you’re interested in people; after all, they are the backbone of every story. Most people don’t think they’re interesting, but that’s absolutely not true; everyone’s interesting! If you take the time to talk to them, you soon find that out. What was the last gift you gave someone? One of my best friends has just had her first baby, so it was a present for him. Although I got all the way up to Sheffield and realised that in the rush to get out of the door, I’d left it behind. So, technically, I haven’t actually given it yet. And perhaps I’d better not say what it is in case she reads this! Tell us a secret/fun fact? I can wiggle my ears; I inherited it from my grandfather, who died when I was seven, and I had no idea I could do it until I was in my teens. That’s sort of my party trick, I suppose. Oh, and I had a ghost living in my bedroom when I was growing up; understandably, that doesn’t come up often in casual conversation, but when it does people tend to think it’s interesting. Who or what would you place in room 101? I nurse a deep and abiding hatred for parsnips. What’s worse, they’re one of those things, like pineapple on a pizza, which infects everything they come near with their flavour. So even if I try and avoid them, they’re still somehow there. Your mastermind subject? I’d like to say it would be something erudite and cultural, but in truth, it’d probably be CBeebies theme songs. What’s been your biggest life lesson? That life is always changing; right now, it’s whizzing by, and I’m really trying to enjoy each moment while it’s here. The Stamford Mysteries is published by HarperCollins. Available from Waterstones, Amazon, and of course, local bookshops, including Walkers in Stamford and Oakham. therutlandmagazine.co.uk

John & Lisa’s Food Tri Tr ip Dow Do wn Unde nderr ITV’s hugely popular culinary couple John Torode MBE and Lisa Faulkner embark on a journey of a lifetime where the pair travel 500 miles along the beautiful coast of Western Australia in search of the very best local food and wine for a brand new five week series

P

roud Australian chef John Torode travelled with his wife, actress and home cook, Lisa Faulkner along a gourmet route of discovery as he returned to the place where his passion for food and cooking began. They meet chefs, winemakers, food fanatics and entrepreneurs creating incredible produce in new ways, from black truffles to abalone, and experience some of Western Australia’s most beautiful landscapes.

What can viewers expect from this brand new series?

John: Australia is so massive that it’s really hard to see all of it. I’ve been lucky to see quite a bit during my life but where we got to go to for this series I had never been to before so it was a dream come true! We went south from Perth along the Margaret River coastline as well as more inland and got to see everything from the amazing seasides, to the huge ancient Southern forests where the Karri trees were the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life. Lisa: It’s such a lovely series and it was so great to get to go away together to a place that we didn’t know much about. And I have to say, I fell in love with Western Australia and that side of the country. Australia is beautiful and just stunning. This was just a really wonderful trip and I was so surprised at how varied one area can be. The beaches, countryside, forests, wildlife - everything you could imagine within just a couple of hours of each other. It was incredible!

20

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

John: Such a beautiful place and the towns were wonderful, and wherever you are in Australia, you can always get a good cup of coffee too!

What were you most excited about?

L: It was a road trip! We could have shared the driving...but I must say that I prefer John to drive. I like to sit and take in the scenery! I remember just looking out of the window saying ‘Oh My God’ a lot at all the wonders we were witnessing. To explore so many new things together during this trip was what made it so exciting. We just got to see so many beautiful places.

Lisa: To explore so many new things together during this trip was what made it so exciting. We just got to see so many beautiful places

J: Oh yeah, it was our first time going to Western Australia together and we were very excited. We really loved it and when we went down to Margaret River, we honestly felt that this was the sort of place you could live. There was one day where we got up, had a walk along the beach first thing in the morning - and we didn’t realise the cameras were on us - and we were just chatting away having such a nice time. The next thing you know we were going to an amazing restaurant by Busselton Jetty and then went to a Beerfarm, we were just thinking ‘this is work! This is our job!’ It was fantastic, very humbling. We just hope people love going on this journey with us as much as we enjoyed it all.

others to jump on a plane and discover Western Australia like we did as well. L: I’m sure it will. For us, it was just great to taste and discover so much together as we went along and to not do all the cooking for a change!

Were there any surprises during the series or things that you discovered about each other or the different locations? L: I don’t think there was anything new that I discovered about John on this trip, I know my husband pretty well! But it was one of those trips where every time I stepped out of the car, I did just look around and go ‘wow’. We take so much for granted and we are very lucky in our jobs, it really was a trip of a lifetime to see all these places during

You both have busy schedules so when working projects come up that require being together it must be pretty special...

J: Yes! Whenever we do television together we are just being us. How we are on Weekend Kitchen for example is just how we are. For this series we got to wear GoPro cameras when we were driving together and were told that that was some of the best material because it was just so natural - with the odd funny remark or a grab of some chocolate from the glovebox! It was just great fun and I hope it inspires

this series. I came back waxing lyrical about Margaret River - it was just amazing, it really was. J: We had always wanted to visit Western Australia. The production team put together a plan for us to visit locations via an electric car, meaning we had to make sure we went via places to charge the car too. But by doing that it had its perks because there were some breathing spaces where we discovered or stumbled across things along the way that we might not have seen. I remember getting up early one morning at the Karri Valley Resort in Pemberton and I just watched all these kangaroos come out - there must have been around 150 of them - so I told the team and the next morning all of us were there to watch and capture it. There were gorgeous kookaburras just sitting on the benches and all these kangaroos... It was really special. We also went to a place called Glenarty Road which is a farm and a restaurant and we didn’t expect anything like it. Ben and Sasha who owned it were glorious. We sat and ate their food and it was delicious and has been named one of the best restaurants in Australia at the Gourmet Traveller Awards. And we stumbled on that, so when that kind of thing happened we just went with it!

What was your highlight of the trip?

J: Pretty much everything I’ve mentioned! But also the history of the place is quite amazing too and we touch on that in the series. For example, the Busselton Jetty is the longest wood-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere and you learn the reason in our series.

22

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

I really loved the guys at Glenarty Road. They were farmers but they got up every single morning and went surfing, then came back to look after the sheep and avocado trees; they grew pretty much everything. That was one of my highlights being with them and just sitting there, listening to Ben and Sasha who had found this amazing world that made them really happy. Seeing the stingrays at Hamelin Bay swimming by so closely to your feet was pretty cool too. L: Yes, it really was. To see those stingrays that close and the dolphins at Rockingham jumping literally a metre away from you was incredible! Paddling on the shores and being on the boat seeing all the animals was amazing, and like John said, we also met so many fantastic people and pretty much ate our way through Western Australia!

John: It was just great fun and I hope it inspires others to jump on a plane and discover Western Australia like we did as well

We did come away thinking ‘I want to live here’... it was just so cool. I mean if Australia wasn’t so far away we’d be there all the time. But what was lovely about all of the areas we visited was that you could be in the Southern forest one moment and then within forty minutes, you could be by the sea on a white sandy beach. It was awesome, really amazing!

You are both highly skilled in the kitchen already, but do you still find that you are learning during adventures like this?

J: I wouldn’t still be doing all this if I wasn’t constantly learning or seeing or understanding new things. My father always said to me, ‘if you go through a day where you haven’t learnt something, you’ve wasted a day’. I think that’s so true - you learn things, you appreciate things. One of the things you often see in Australia is this enormous blue sky, and at night time this enormous black sky with huge amounts of stars, and it makes you sit back and wonder how amazing nature truly is.

hand luggage. They’re amazing! The other key thing is a laundry bag so you can put your dirty stuff away from the clean stuff. L: John was actually quite jealous of my ‘packing cubes’! I had these packing cubes of shorts and tops, and things for when we were not filming and John really wished he had them for the different outfits he had to take too. They are amazing and you can really squish them down into your suitcase. Also, if I can, I try to pack a few days before to make sure I’ve got everything sorted. I lay it out on the bed a nd then go through it and cull probably half of it! There’s also this amazing lady that I follow on Instagram called @ChloeLovesToShop and she does this thing where she takes photos of outfits so she knows what she’s going to pack and knows what she’ll wear and what goes with what. It sounds a bit mad but it’s absolutely brilliant. You can just look back through your phone at the outfits you’ve packed and think ‘I’ll wear that today’. It’s so helpful!

When can people see you both back cooking together on screen?

J: We are on ITV a lot in 2024 actually! After this series, we might have something across Springtime and the new series of John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen will be back for 11 weeks this autumn. L: We are so happy to be doing more Weekend Kitchen. We are filming at the moment and it’s set to be another brilliant batch of episodes! John & Lisa’s Food Trip Down Under is out now on ITV1 and available on ITVX.

What are your top travel essentials?

J: A very good and solid suitcase! I also bought myself this antique folding coat hanger because Lisa knows that I like to have a nicely ironed shirt. I iron everything and take my fold up coat hangers - you literally fold them down and they can sit in your

Perched high above the lake, Michael Gates visited the Carlton Hotel, St. Moritz’s most refined hideaway Location St. Moritz, the birthplace of winter sports and one of the most famous ski resorts in the world. This favourite international destination is renowned for its elegant and exclusive atmosphere and is home to the five-star Carlton Hotel. Around a 3-hour train journey from Zurich, you can only marvel at the views as you travel through the mountainous landscapes of the Swiss Alps. The railway itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular routes.

Hotel Perched high above Lake St. Moritz, the Carlton Hotel has incredible views across the lake and mountains of the Engadine Valley. Built in 1913 and totally renovated in 2007, the hotel is modern and contemporary, yet has retained its historical character and features. The hotel continues to

evolve, with rooms being refreshed over the last few seasons. The hotel offers a range of 60 spacious rooms and suites, created by Swiss interior designer Carlo Rampazzi, all of which are south facing and have views of the lake and mountains. Designed to offer the ultimate comfort in a range of styles and colours, with all the amenities and modern technology you could envisage in a luxurious five-star hotel. The suites are individually decorated, with handcrafted furnishings, marble bathrooms, king-sized beds with Berluti leather headboards, Venetian stucco ceilings and Murano glass lamps. The Carlton Hotel also boasts the largest penthouse suite in St. Moritz covering the entire eighth floor. Furnished with elegant interiors, there are three spacious bedrooms with individual bathrooms, open plan living and five terraces with all-round panoramic views. therutlandmagazine.co.uk

Food and Drink At the heart of the hotel, the Carlton Bar and lobby is the perfect meeting place to unwind after a day of adventure or for pre-dinner cocktails. Situated on the first floor known as the ‘Bel Etage’, the generous space has been lovingly restored with two grand open fireplaces, comfortable sofas and highbacked chairs. Here you can enjoy a light lunch or afternoon tea and access the large sun terrace, ideal for taking in the panoramic views whilst you enjoy a coffee or Aperol Spritz. There are two restaurants to choose from at the Carlton Hotel and this season sees the return of Executive Chef Salvatore Frequente and the newly opened Grand Restaurant. The newly developed menu gives pride of place not only to local produce, but to wild products from the surrounding forests. Both the look and flavour of the dishes are inspired and enhanced by these gifts of the outdoors, which are picked and collected seasonally before being expertly prepared. Serving

hand-crafted Italian gourmet cuisine, the two-Michelin starred restaurant, Da-Vittorio St. Moritz is celebrating 10 years at the Carlton Hotel. Brought to you by Enrico and Roberto Cerea, the brothers also own the three-Michelin starred restaurant Da Vittorio just outside Bergamo.

Experiences Moving Mountains is the signature guest experience program that focuses on restoring your vitality, immersing you in nature and celebrating the joy of life. Based on five pillars; Move, Play, Nourish, Rest and Give, you can experience the holistic program throughout your stay at the Carlton Hotel. From activities such as ice bathing in Lake St. Moritz, tobogganing and exploring glacier caves to the dream butlers who create a luxurious and tailored pre-sleep ritual in the comfort of your room, the concept is thoughtfully created and executed well.

The Carlton Spa The Carlton Spa extends over 1200 m2 and three floors and there are six different treatment rooms where guests can enjoy a variety of massages and cosmetic treatments, indoor and outdoor pools and 26

a private spa suite. On the lowest floor, you will find a spacious sauna world, which is a warren of steam baths, saunas and a caldarium. For cooling down there are various showers, an ice fountain and outdoor seating terraces.

Personal Note The Moving Mountains ‘Play’ activities were one of my key highlights. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to experience ice bathing in Lake St. Moritz due to the weather, however, I did enjoy a torchlit hike around the lake and discovered the hidden places of St. Moritz. I also took a horse and carriage ride through town and the forest to Lake Staz where I watched the sunset whilst ice skating. The Carlton Spa was out of this world, and I treated myself to a Moving Mountains Massage. This was a full body deep tissue massage with hot and cold stone therapy, perfect for relaxing and stimulating my tired achy muscles after a day of activities. My final highlight was the fondue gondolas. Housed outside the front of the hotel, these unassuming heated gondolas seat up to 4 people and look magical when lit up at night. You can choose a traditional or truffle champagne fondue with a selection of meats, potatoes and bread, it was fondue heaven. Without a doubt, the Carlton Hotel is one of the most exceptional hotels I have ever visited. The hotel only opens for the winter season, but it would most definitely be my first choice when visiting St Moritz. The Carlton Hotel is open for the 2023/24 winter season from December until the end of March. tschuggencollection.ch/en myswitzerland.com therutlandmagazine.co.uk

What Should We Know About Our Heart? Dr Bhavik Modi, Consultant Cardiologist at the Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital to talk about all things heart and here’s what Dr Modi had to say

T

he main function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. Blood is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body and carrying away toxins, carbon dioxide, and other waste from the tissue. The coronary arteries, supply blood directly to the heart muscle to enable it to beat commonly between 60-100 times per minute. The heart beat is kept steady through a specific network of electrical connections within the heart. If these electrical connections are disturbed, the heart can end up beating irregularly, too fast or too slowly. Coronary artery disease (often resulting in angina and heart attacks) is the most common heart problem. It is characterized by narrowings or

40

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

blockages in the coronary arteries, which supply blood directly to the heart muscle. Other heart diseases include the following: • Heart arrhythmias: If the Heart’s electrical connections are disturbed, the heart can end up beating irregularly, too fast or too slowly. • Heart failure: This is described as a long-term reduction in the heart’s pumping capability due to conditions such as coronary heart disease, thyroid disorders, cardiomyopathy, or hypertension. • Heart valve disease: Your heart contains valves that direct the movement of blood between the four chambers of the heart, the lungs, and blood vessels. Valve

The RUTLAND Magazine | Promotion

disease is characterized by an abnormality of these valves that impairs their proper opening and closing. • Congenital heart disease: This refers to the heart defects people are born with. • Endocarditis: This is an infection that occurs inside the heart. Knowing the Symptoms Coronary artery disease can present with chest pain, shortness of breath, and pain in the neck, jaw, or arms. You may not know you have coronary artery disease until you have a heart attack, arrhythmia, angina, stroke, or heart failure. Heart arrhythmias are usually accompanied by heart palpitations or fluttering in the chest. Lightheadedness, fainting, or breathlessness can also occur.

Heart failure and disease of the heart muscle can present with shortness of breath, swollen feet, and general fatigue.

Dr Bhavik Modi is an experienced Cardiologist based at the Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital. He specialises in all aspects of heart disease and is a leading expert in managing chest pain, breathlessness, heart attacks and optimising risk factors for heart disease. If you experience any of the symptoms above and would like to book an appointment with Dr Bhavik Modi, for further information or call 0300 131 1416 to speak to our inhouse team. nuffieldhealth.com

Fo r tif For tify y ing the S kin Ba B a rrie rrierr

Consultant Dermatologist Dr Aiza Jamil shares her advice on looking after your body’s frontline defence against harmful toxins and environmental stressors Why is a strong skin barrier important for healthy skin? Skin barrier protects the skin from external environmental agents and free radicals which can damage the skin. Maintaining a strong skin barrier will help prevent this damage and any skin conditions that can happen when the skin barrier is compromised.

What are the signs of a compromised skin barrier? When the skin barrier is compromised, it becomes prone to redness, irritation, sensitivity, increased dryness and flaky skin, breakouts and a reduced ability to retain moisture. This can lead to the development of conditions like eczema, acne and fungal skin infections.

Why are skin barrier issues on the rise? There has been an increased trend of using potentially irritating agents such as retinoids, and exfoliating acids, as well as harsh physical exfoliators like grainy scrubs. Other common culprits are some natural or synthetic fragrances as well as drying alcohols, especially on sensitive skin. Certain dermatological procedures

like HydraFacial, chemical peels, micro-needling and dermabrasion are tried by many people without appropriate knowledge of any harmful effects it can cause to their skin. It can lead to disruptions to the skin barrier which increases the likelihood of irritants, pathogens, and allergens provoking inflammatory responses. We have recently seen an increase in such cases.

There’s an idea that when it comes to skincare/treatments we need to slightly damage skin to kickstart our natural repair processes – is this true? Skin regeneration is a natural process that occurs at a cellular level. The top layers of cells constantly replace themselves, but this process slows down with ageing. Specific skin care products can also help improve the natural cell turnover process, hydrate the skin, and get rid of built-up dead skin cells. Sometimes a little deep exfoliation or resurfacing can kick-start skin rejuvenation but without damaging the skin barrier and should be performed by a qualified professional. Sometimes an aggressive approach may lead to worse outcomes and irritant reactions and scarring.

Does our skin barrier become more vulnerable as we get older? The influence of ageing on skin barrier function is widely accepted, but not very much understood and evaluated. As skin ages, it becomes thinner, less elastic, and loses moisture and lipid contact. This leads to the formation of wrinkles, lines, sagging skin, the development of pigmented spots and blemishes and dryness of the skin.

What skin habits comprise the skin barrier? Using potential irritant chemicals on the skin whether they are night creams, retinoids, or exfoliants without proper evaluation and consultation or use of such products on an already compromised skin barrier can lead to damaged skin or give rise to irritant and inflammatory skin conditions.

What skin habits fortify the skin barrier?

#1 - Moisturise regularly to keep the skin hydrated and healthy. Use lotions and serums that contain moisture-binding humectants, such as glycerine, sorbitol and hyaluronic acid which is antiaging as well. #2 - Avoid irritant products like harsh chemical exfoliation, retinoids without prescription, and astringents which can cause inflammation of the skin and skin conditions including eczema and rosacea. #3 - Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of a damaged skin barrier, and continued exposure to UVA and UVB rays impedes skin-barrier restoration. Sun protection with factor 50 is very useful in protecting the skin barrier and photoaging. #4 - A healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet, good sleep, reduced stress and regular exercise will help to improve skin regeneration and natural healing. dermsolutions.co.uk www.sknclinics.co.uk therutlandmagazine.co.uk

ith a new year comes a renewed call for a reset. And, what better way to feel rejuvenated than through a new travel experience that incorporates a touch of wellness? One of my favourite ideas for a relaxing break this year, perhaps surprisingly, comes from the Arctic. Quite understandably, when I say ‘Lapland’ you might immediately think of Santa and snowfall. But, the Nordic countries have another treasure that makes them a wonderful wellness option – saunas. To experience them, head to the recently opened Arctic Bath Hotel for a relaxing retreat with a real difference. The timber structure is truly striking where it sits on the water, giving it the appearance of either floating in summer or being frozen into the landscape during winter. When the skies are dark enough, you’ll also have the added treat of glimpsing the northern lights during your stay. Inside, you can try the three different saunas, followed by a bracing dip in the cold bath.

This age-old ritual is said to have a number of health benefits, though you can opt for more soothing treatments such as hot stone massages and yoga sessions, should you prefer! regent-holidays.co.uk

If you’d rather be somewhere warmer, South Africa’s winelands offer a wonderfully peaceful spot. Here, nestled away in the vineyards with stunning views of the Stellenbosch Mountains, is Lanzerac wine estate. This retreat is steeped in history and evokes a true sense of serenity, thanks to its surrounding natural beauty. Along with its world-famous winery (which was home to the world’s first bottled Pinotage), the hotel has an excellent spa where you can unwind with a massage before relaxing in the sun on the scenic terrace. This, combined with al fresco wine tastings, tranquil walks and gourmet food crafted from locally produced ingredients makes for heavenly relaxation. rainbowtours.co.uk

S

chloss Elmau was built during World War 1 by renowned philosopher Dr Johannes Muller, positioned 1000 metres above sea level and flanked by thick forest on all sides. The spectacular landscape encompasses crystal clear lakes, rushing streams and the backdrop of the imposing snow-capped Alps. It was reminiscent of The Sound of Music when I visited in mid-September with bright blue, cloudless skies and a rolling meadow filled with wildflowers. King Ludwig II’s fairy tale palace, Neuschwanstein Castle, rises out of this landscape with its majestic turrets. Schloss Elmau played host to the G7 summit

in 2015 and 2022 you can certainly understand why this 5-star superior resort was chosen. Trudeau jogged with his security team throughout the Alpine trails and Boris Johnson charmed staff and swam in the lake in this secluded haven. Celebrity guests and sports people are commonplace including the 90’s German supermodel Claudia Schiffer. The resort comprises of two distinct hotels, aptly named The Hideaway and The Retreat. therutlandmagazine.co.uk

63

Rebuilt in 2007 The Hideaway consists of 115 rooms and suites, Badehaus Adult Spa, Oriental Hammam, family spa, nature spa, 4 restaurants, a tea lounge, jazz bar, a concert hall, a bookstore and a library. The resort consists of 47 rooms and suites, an adult spa and onsen, library lounge, boardroom, a yoga pavilion and a summit pavilion. The ambience of the hotel is impressive yet relaxing, blending décor from Iran, India and Indonesia. The outcome is relaxing and inviting, and you immediately sink into your surroundings. A representation of the Hindu god Ganesha was chosen by owner Dietmar Mueller- Elmau, “Ganesha is a symbol of being able to discern between good and bad,” Dietmar said. His love affair with the East is clearly reflected throughout the hotel. Personal wellbeing retreats are a feature of the resort. During my stay, I experienced an ‘Individual Massage’ within the Badehaus Adult Spa. An old school spa featuring endless saunas, steam baths and oriental hammam. The spa has been crafted from 200-million-year-old Jurassic limestone from nearby Solnhofen. One point of difference with Schloss Elmau is that it provides a worldwide historical and cultural programme consisting of 200 concerts, readings and film screenings during the year. During my stay, I was most fortunate to attend a concert by Ludovico Einaudi a world-renowned composer and pianist who composed his work ‘Seven Days Walking’ while staying at Schloss Elmau. The diverse range of cuisine on offer at Schloss Elmau is befitting of its superior 5 -star status. Luce D’Oro is the fine dining 2-star option created by Head Chef Christoph Rainer. He blends exquisite dishes from French-Japanese cuisine. The result is beautiful yet delicious dishes. This restaurant is less formal than most 64

Michelin star experiences and has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Indian, Pan- PanMediterranean, Sushi and Sashimi, Thai and Bavarian cuisine are featured in the resort’s other restaurants. I also experienced The Elmauer Alm hike and lunch during my stay. We were guided through a gentle 30-minute walk and then rewarded with delicious local Bavarian delicacies in Schloss Elmau Alm. The restaurant was built in 1924 and is set in beautiful Alpine pastures. One of the highlights of my stay was a Jivamutki yoga class taught by the very knowledgeable Johannes Mikenda. The class took place in The Pavilion, an impressive wooden structure, but I saw classes taking place on the outdoor yoga platform. Various yoga retreats with one of the world’s best yoga teachers make Schloss Elmau possibly one of the most exclusive yoga retreats in the world. Also on hand with advice is Dr Imke Konig, a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and one of the best in Europe. Children are highly catered for at Schloss Elmau and a programme of edutainment with soccer camps run by Thomas Albeck, youth trainer for the German Bundesliga feature throughout the year. The range of educational activities includes literature workshops, zoom photo courses, science lab, chess academy, a manga workshop drawing course and hands-on woodcraft workshops. Local places of interest include the city of Munich, Linderhof Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, Innsbruck and Herrenciemsee Castle and can be arranged through the hotel’s concierge.

Other activities include aquatics swim camp, racing bike tour weeks, tennis, archery, alpine wildlife safaris, fly fishing, kite surfing and golf. Schloss Elmau provides a year-round sanctuary for its visitors. Its appeal is wide. Catering for the active, culturally discerning, families and couples alike. The number of repeat visitors is a testament to this notably prominent world leaders of the G7! schloss-elmau.de therutlandmagazine.co.uk

From the diminutive originals of the 1960s to the modern iterations, the John Cooper Works moniker has followed Mini’s fastest and most powerful products. And here’s another one, in the shape of the new Mini John Cooper Works Countryman. Though it’s billed as the adventurous Mini, the Countryman is showing off its sporty side with a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and almost 300bhp, as well as the advantage of all-wheel drive. That means this big family SUV will get from 0-62mph in just over five seconds, and it’ll keep accelerating all the way to its 155mph top speed. Mini JCW Countryman, mini.co.uk

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

SHOUTOUT 2 MY X BMW’s second-generation X2 promises the latest technology and style, writes James Fossdyke. And there’s even an electric version.

T

he BMW X2 was one of those cars that looks pretty pointless at first. Essentially a more expensive, coupe version of the X1 that offered little more in terms of space or performance, the old model looked very much like a car intended to appeal to the heart, rather than the head. Even so, customers flocked to it in their droves, and sales remained strong even when the car began to feel decidedly outdated. Now, though, there’s a new X2, and like its predecessor, it’s basically a more expensive and barely more practical version of the X1, offering a slightly more coupe-like shape and, on the face of it, not an awful lot else. Yet if you look closer, you’ll notice significant improvements. The cabin, for example, now comes with BMW’s very

72

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

latest touchscreen technology, ably assisted by BMWs iDrive rotary control that allows you to navigate the system without taking your eyes off the road so much. There’s enhanced driver assistance technology, too, and every model comes in BMW’s desirable and motorsport-inspired M Sport form, giving every car a visual lift compared with a more run-of-the-mill X1. And that’s before we come to what’s under the skin. Like the X1 on which it’s based, the X2 is expected to be offered with a choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains, giving customers the chance to pick the engine that suits them. So far, only the 168bhp sDrive20i engine, the high-performance, 296bhp M235i xDrive and the all-electric, 309bhp iX2 xDrive30 have been announced, but other options are expected to join the range later. There were some sad faces when Mercedes announced it was dropping the svelte C-Class Coupe and E-Class Coupe models, both of which had proven remarkably popular. But now Mercedes has replaced both models with one car, dubbed the CLE. Offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines initially, with a plug-in hybrid to follow at a later date, the swoopily styled Mercedes will also be offered in a choice of different trim levels. What’s more, the CLE will get Mercedes’ latest infotainment system, called MBUX, with an enhanced digital assistance feature and better integration with smartphones. VORSPRUNG DURCH INCREMENTS Audi had to jump through some legal hoops to get hold of the Q4 name, which was formerly reserved for Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s four-wheel-drive cars, but it turned out to be well worth it. The Q4 e-tron electric family SUV has become a popular choice among customers, and that popularity has made it worthy of an update. Now with greater charging capability (assuming you can find a charger powerful enough) and more efficient electric motors, the Q4 e-tron offers greater usability than before, and Audi has tweaked the steering and suspension to make it more pleasant to drive. Whether these comparatively small changes will add up to a big difference remains to be seen, but it’s expected to be a step in the right direction. Audi Q4 e-tron, from £49,915, audi.co.uk

The MGB GT is a charming classic, but as James Fossdyke has been finding out, a little magic from a workshop in Oxfordshire can make all the difference

O

ld cars come with myriad charms. Hailing from a time when design teams were led by one person with a vision, they have a distinct style that’s missing from modern vehicles, and the thought of tearing through the countryside in a classic car is definitely an appealing one. Particularly if you’re on your way to the pub. But like all old things, whether they’re cars, pets, people or houses, they need the right maintenance if you want them to work properly. And even then, they aren’t always reliable. That’s where companies like Frontline come in. From an unassuming industrial unit by a railway line just south of Oxford, the small team painstakingly restores and improves old cars, stripping away the years of wear, tear and sometimes neglect, before reconstructing them to the owner’s exacting specifications. Primarily, although not exclusively, the company works with MGBs, the small British coupes and roadsters built just a few miles away between 1963 and 1995. But Frontline does more than just fix up some old classics. By stripping away most of the mechanical features and the interior, the company manages to make these cars usable every day. Out go the wheezy old engines, replaced with more modern power plants (including electric motors, if you ask nicely), and the gearboxes are replaced, too. Cooling systems, brakes and heating are all up for modification and replacement, and Frontline’s duo of schoolfriends-cum-trim shop specialists will build a new interior exactly the way you want it. It’s a good little business that Frontline has got going, and the firm is thriving, with orders streaming in from customers around the world. After all, who doesn’t like the idea of a classic British sports car that actually works? And it will – or at least should – work. There’s no more fear of ending your journey in a cloud of steam at the roadside than there would be in a modern sports car, and given the evident quality of the craftsmanship on show, there’s arguably even less chance of things going to pot. Although it might be easy for Frontline to look upon its handiwork and think ‘ job done’, the company refuses to rest on its laurels. And for

74

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

the 60th anniversary of the MGB, there’s a new special edition. It’s called the LE60 – a name we can’t type without thinking of a certain Danish building toy – and it has taken the Frontline build to a whole new level. Ordinarily, customers choosing a Frontline would get a 2.4-litre Mazda engine in place of the crummy four-cylinder used in the original. That’s lovely, but it isn’t exactly supercar stuff, and given LE60 customers will be asked to part with more than £200,000 for their car, it wasn’t really up to snuff. So the engineers took the old Rover V8 engine, notorious for its unreliability yet loved for its power and sound, and set to work. Pretty much everything was changed except the main engine block, and even that was modified, but Frontline now reckons it has managed to give the old motor modern reliability credentials. That engine has been crammed under the MGB GT’s long bonnet (unlike other Frontline MGBs, the LE60 is only available as a ‘GT’ coupe), and the cabin has been completely revamped. Air conditioning, posh leather, wood trim and satellite navigation are just some of the options available in the beautifully crafted and era-sympathetic interior, all of which is hand built to your specification. Frontline has even built a mock-up of an MGB interior in its HQ so customers can have a special seat fitting session. Our test car came with distressed brown leather ideally suited to a sports car of the era, and it featured a rally-specification exterior that’s common to all LE60s. Customers can, of course, choose any colour they like, but all LE60s come without the chrome bumpers that are so often seen on classic MGs. The ‘pepper-pot’ wheels are standard, too, along with the dark window surrounds and the widened body. In short, it’s designed to look just like an ordinary MGB GT, albeit with a few sporty modifications. But that image hides some incredible engineering that sees the 4.8-litre V8 engine churn out around 375bhp, all of which goes to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. And because the car only weighs just over a tonne, that’s an impressive power-to-weight ratio. So impressive, in fact, that

the LE60 will get from 0-62mph in about four seconds, which puts it on a par with a modern Porsche 911. Speed, however, is only one part of the LE60 puzzle, because it comes with that stellar V8 engine that gurgles and spits its way through a massive vocal range that rises to a scream of intense rage as you wring its neck. They don’t really make engines like this anymore. Except, of course, Frontline does. Yet for all the modern engineering, the Frontline still feels very much like a classic car. The noise is still old school, the skinny steering wheel feels lively between your fingertips, and the suspension doesn’t have the deftness we’ve come to expect from modern sports cars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s comfortable – the LE60 rides a little like an old Mazda MX-5, with a slight softness to it that you just don’t get from, say, a go-faster Porsche 911 – but it doesn’t have the body control of

76

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

modern cars. In fact, the suspension is merely an upgrade on the original, rather than a wholesale substitute, so there’s still a bit of lean in corners when you’re driving too quickly. That’s a good thing in my book, though. So many modern sports cars are so capable that you can’t really enjoy them on the road – at least not legally – so a bit of playfulness is welcome. The LE60 is great fun, and though it commands serious money, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It wants you to rev the engine and push on a bit when the mood takes you, and there’s no need to wrap it in cotton wool. Yeah, I’d probably garage it, partly for security and partly because it’s too beautiful to leave outside in the snow, wind and rain, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t use it every day if you so wished. It has a big boot, and unlike the original, it has been painted and treated properly, so it shouldn’t rot. At least not as long as it’s properly maintained. The LE60, then, is the ultimate classic car. It has the period-correct styling and the soundtrack to match, but it comes with the handling of a 1990s sports car and the reliability of one from the 2020s. It can be specified with all the modern features, too, and though the price is a sticking point – you could buy a very fast supercar for that money – the Frontline is still about as good as classic cars get.

There has been a huge appetite for both Guncast Swimming Pools and KLAFS products and our unique design and build service – both commercially and domestically – and we only expect this to grow further as we become more prominent in the area. “We are continuing to expand at an exciting rate – operating from a large showroom in Cheshire, as well as one down in Surrey will ensure clients are able to conveniently meet with the team up and down the country, and see and feel the quality of our latest KLAFS designed cabins and the wider wellness products we can offer.” One of the organisation’s most exciting new products is their S11 sauna – a collaboration between KLAFS and Studio F.A. Porsche, a premium design agency and originators of the Porsche design. The most exclusive and luxurious sauna experiences to date, the S11 is a limited run of just 999 units. Customers can enjoy the cabin’s warm and inviting atmosphere, which has been specially designed with comfort in mind. Carefully dimensioned, precisely angled horizontal wooden slats create seemingly free-floating loungers, set against a backdrop of traditional Japanese Washi paper, and fit with cutting-edge

lighting technology to deliver the most luxurious sensory phenomenon. The GESA Sauna by KLAFS and renowned designer Gesa Hansen combines Scandinavian comfort with Japanese minimalism. Sleek white benches, clean lines, black walls and glass front characterise the stylish Japandi sauna – a totally unique offering in KLAFS’ catalogue. Allowing sauna lovers to reap the health benefits of sauna bathing more effectively, KLAFS’ new Vitality Boost gives both the user’s cardiovascular and immune system an intensive workout. Integrated into KLAFS’ Sanarium Heater Majus, the Vitality Boost automates running water over hot stones, not only creating a soothing soundscape but also increasing humidity and perceived temperature within the cabin. An air current distributes the water vapour evenly across the skin, raising users’ internal body temperature and working vital bodily functions at a higher level.

Health and Wellbeing Benefits The health benefits of swimming, sauna use and steam bathing are well-documented. Swimming is

an excellent low-impact exercise, which can not only improve heart health and contribute to muscle growth and weight loss, but can also have huge benefits to mental wellbeing and mood levels. The heat of a sauna can increase blood flow, improve cardiovascular and respiratory functions, and even battle common colds and viruses by encouraging the production of white blood cells. Similarly, steam baths can be particularly effective in easing sinus congestion and rebalancing skin moisture levels, helping to ward off seasonal sniffles and skin conditions. The heat and humidity of steam baths can also work to simultaneously unclog and cleanse pores, leaving the user with a clear and refreshed complexion.

W hy Choos hoosiing the Right Gl ass forr your Home fo is I mp mpo ortant When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, it’s paramount to remember that how they perform is just as important as how they look

O

ver the years there’s been some incredible developments in glass technology which means homeowners have the opportunity to select the most suitable glazing for the windows in their property. In fact, depending on the chosen window supplier, Brits can now specify windows with glass that has been tailored to meet the specific requirements of each room within their home. Whilst the wide range of glazing options is great news for some people, knowing where to start can be a bit overwhelming for others. To help, window and door specialists Everest have explored some of the common problems high performing glass can help to combat. Anthony Threlfall, Head of Marketing at Everest, said: “It is vital homeowners understand the fundamental role that glazing plays to create a more comfortable living space. “Modern glass now has the ability to reflect heat in and out of a home, reduce outside noise, increase security, safety and privacy and protect against UV sun damage. “What’s more every window in each room of the property can be fully customised depending on the requirements of each space, creating optimal comfort and enjoyment throughout a home.”

Window glass is fundamental

Even though it’s important to understand the fundamental role glass plays and how it can directly impact the temperature and comfort levels in their living spaces, there are other key components of a window that can directly affect how it performs. “At Everest we understand that when it comes to manufacturing a high quality window, a winning combination is needed to get the best results for homeowners across the UK,” adds Anthony. “We believe the type of glass is the number one priority but of course the only way to guarantee that the window can deliver optimum comfort all year long is if it’s made using other high performing components.

Homes and Interiors

“We use a unique window system at Everest combining a five chamber uPVC profile available in a wide choice of colours, an expansive range of glass options, a PAS24 locking mechanism and range of attractive furniture which means we can offer a great performing window which achieves fantastic results time and time again.”

The results of high-performing glazing

With years of experience supplying windows and doors across the country, the team at Everest has a clear understanding of the most common problems homeowners with the wrong glazing face. To help, the team of experts has specially designed a fantastic range of high-performing glass, as Anthony explains. “Our high performing glass ranges have been uniquely manufactured using specialist glazing options to benefit homeowners. “We have the Ultimate range, Energy Saver range and Noise reducing range and each one has been carefully crafted to deliver outstanding results to guarantee a comfortable home no matter the weather.” Manufactured using an innovative type of solar reduction glass, the Ultimate range is the perfect solution for homeowners looking for an insulating window which can successfully reduce the amount of solar energy that passes through a window. The Energy Saver range however, as its name suggests, is ideal for those wanting a highly energy efficient window that can successfully let in and retain the sun’s heat. Thanks to the Low-E glass, homes will stay warmer for longer, helping to reduce monthly heating bills. Finally, the Noise Reducing range is fantastic for homes positioned next to airports, railway lines and in areas with high levels of traffic. Designed to reduce

outside noise by up to 40 decibels, this range is a great solution for homeowners looking to create a serene living environment without compromising on thermal performance. Plus, all ranges can be security laminated which is an additional coating on the glass, holding it together in the event it is smashed significantly impeding intruder entry.

Energy efficient windows in high demand

A recent investigation from Everest found that more than half (51%) of homeowners want to replace their windows to improve the overall energy efficiency of their home. “It’s fantastic to see that more and more people are looking to use more energy efficient building products in their home,” adds Anthony. “By installing energy efficient windows, homeowners will not only see a difference in the temperature throughout their property, but they could also see some changes to their monthly heating bills. “With any one of our new high performance glazing options, people are guaranteed to not only have a window which helps to improve a home’s energy efficiency but looks great and meets the needs of the rooms in the property, as well as being extra secure.” To find out more information about the Everest Ultimate range, Energy Saver range or Noise Reducing range to see if one of these glazing options can optimise your home and living spaces, visit everest.co.uk/glass

All Dr Dresse essed dU Up p Dressing rooms are in demand, but what should you think about when designing yours? Clive Christian Interiors Head of Design, Oliver Deadman, shares some advice

A

ccoveted statement space and inner sanctum, the dressing room has become an essential element of any high-end interior. It’s a place to pull together the perfect outfit, whether you’re heading to training, to drinks, or to the airport. Thoughtful design and premium materials mean you can keep suits, shirts and shoes in immaculate condition while securing valuables like watches, jewellery and cufflinks in custom-built safes. But this most intimate of rooms is no longer restricted to sartorial pursuits, as a growing demand for his-and-hers dressing rooms indicates. This newly shared space is now being designed for comfort and pleasure as well as practicality – many dressing rooms incorporate seating, entertainment and even a dry bar or coffee machine. Add the latest tech-enhanced features like heated drawers and sub-zero drinks stations, and you’ll soon have yourself a space you’ll never want to leave.

We caught up with Oliver Deadman, Head of Design at Clive Christian Interiors, to discuss designing your first dressing room and wardrobe, trends he’s seeing in the space and what can be expected from brand’s upcoming London Townhouse launch:

Let’s start at the beginning, what is the best wood type to use in wardrobe design? Speaking historically, the best timber to use for clothes storage is cedar, particularly cedar of Lebanon, which has fantastic antifungal and pesticide qualities. This means you can safely store your winter cashmere without the threat of moths. We have recently produced a lined subterrain clothes store for a London client, which was lined in cedar of Lebanon. A particularly nice project, this was a

prized gem for the gentleman owner who is a very proud Lebanese patriot. The raw material cannot legally be cut down, which makes it very precious – the tree must fall naturally.

Design wise, what’s the first step? Understand usage. As with all our client work, dressing spaces are extremely personal. How do you want to use it? Who do you want to be in the space with? At what times of day? All these factors hugely affect the flow and specification.

90

What are the trends you’re seeing now?

What new tech have you been integrating?

Collectors – whether sunglasses, hats, watches, shoes, or handbags –a huge number of our clients are collectors and we’re integrating more ways of displaying, protecting, and preserving their finds. Whether it be designing moveable shelves that can change and stagger in height depending on the size of an item or low-iron presentation glass. We are serially integrating custom-built safes. Comfort in the dressing room: integrated seating, dry bars, entertainment systems, is also something we’re seeing of late. These spaces are being designed to spend time in, and they are evolving into entertaining spaces – much as we saw the kitchen evolve all those years ago.

We have seen an influx in dedicated decorative security. A fine example of this is the Buben & Zörweg safe which is to feature in the new Clive Christian Furniture Townhouse, housing watch winders, jewel pads and currency drawers all behind the finest quilted leather and German steel. In LA we recently specified a safe product, which lives discreetly behind a push-to-open, mechanically operated full-length mirror. On a smaller scale we have a fast-drop integrated drawer safe, which allows clients to drop keys, daily jewellery, wallets, passports, etc. – operated by fingerprint recognition. Appliances are becoming more present as spaces become more entertainment-led. We’re integrating beverage centres (Sub-Zero), Kaelo bottle systems within islands and even warming drawers used to preheat your linens and bathrobes.

Is there any advice you’d give someone around the internal cabinetry design? As with most modern approaches to room layout, functional aspects are neatly hidden to preserve clean-cut decorative outer linework. Drawer separation, cable management for beauty appliances, pullout/up/down storage (for increased accessibility) – even dual-sided cabinets. Interior options are about balance, increasing functionality and workflow – without detracting from the desired aesthetic.

There’s a large dressing room going into the new London townhouse. Can you tell us a little about this? What specialist features have you included? The room plays a trick on the eye – a large central opening appears to cast a reflection of the cabinetry from left to right. Each space (hers and his in this instance) features a fitted tall run of metro deco inlay furniture with a central dressing island. Hers is frosted maple, while his is black walnut to create a fantastic yin yang effect. Hers concentrates on decorative storage for shoes, bags and long flowing garments (through fluted glass), while his has a beautiful central feature of the Buben & Zörweg leather-appointed safe.

Do you find yourself designing any specialist design details in the dressing rooms – marquetry or other features? The dressing room lends itself very well to personalisation. This is ever present in the fashion industry – we naturally adopt terminology like ‘tailored pieces’, ‘bespoke design’, ‘client monogram’ – we could quite easily be discussing a suit, when in reality it is about the space it is housed within. Why wouldn’t you want to adopt the same character and level of detail? A previous conversation I had when discussing a client brief likened the cabinetry in question to a Paul Smith suit: business on the outside, party on the inside! Cabinetry can be customised with bold leather, exotic veneers and glass work to pack a discreet statement.

What feature would you have in your own dressing room? I think the integration of creature comforts within the space is fantastic, bringing the feel of a hotel stay to the everyday. A dry bar for the evenings, coffee facilities for the mornings, all set just off an adjoining wet room – with soft music and a comfy chair arrangement…blissful.
