How would you describe yourself ?

As an extreme extravert and confident person, I spend as much time as possible being out, socialising and having lots of fun! Well that’s if I am not working as I’m also a bit of a workaholic. Growing up I was the complete opposite and very shy, I am not sure what happened there...as now I am the type who will be dancing on a table somewhere. Keeping fit and healthy is also important to me, before the recent Covid issue I would swim nearly every day which I am really missing at the moment.

Where is home? And work?

I live and work in Manchester city centre. My main place of work is the Boodles showroom located on King Street, although I do travel around a bit for work when visiting clients or going to events.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to do all sorts when I was younger, even be in a boy band... I still do. My singing capabilities, however, won’t allow that. When I was in high school, I did want to be a vet as I have always loved animals. My current job seems to have found me and I love it! I go from dealing with multi-million pound jewellery to going to some of the country’s most exclusive events. There are a lot of perks which I am very lucky to experience.

Name a few of your favourite places to be...

Some of my favourite places would have to be Sitges near Barcelona, Venice and I love America! To be honest anywhere with sun and sea. But mainly I love being with my friends, whether it is going away with them or just hanging out in a bar or restaurant.

What or who inspires you?

My colleagues at Boodles, all of them have such diverse lives and skill sets, it’s amazing to see how they cope with certain situations and always give me great advice.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

This is really embarrassing, but I actually bought myself and one of my best friends, Scott a sequin jumpsuit, as a fancy dress costume. Actually, he doesn’t know this yet, so I hope this is published after I have given it to him!

Tell us a secret/fun fact?

Hmm, I am so open I don’t feel I have a secret fact. One thing people don’t know about me is that I used to be a qualified lifeguard. If you want an embarrassing/fun fact, I have a portfolio of pictures where I copy and recreate film covers and famous art work with a good friend of mine.

Who or what would you place in Room 101?

At the moment, the obvious choice is Covid-19.

It’s messing up my social life. I’m not normally a routine person, however I am looking forward to getting some kind of normality back.

What’s been your biggest life lesson?

To always be yourself and never try and act like someone else to please others. Also don’t be afraid to try new things, I always like to push myself with new experiences. This has given me so many great stories. www.boodles.com, www.seventy9.social

SUCCESS As luxury perfumery, Ormonde Jayne celebrates 20 years in business, The Cheshire Magazine speaks to its Cheshire born founder, Linda Pilkington about the evolution and success of her brand

O

n November 22nd 2000, perfumer Linda Pilkington registered her British perfume house at Company House in London. Still independently owned by Linda, Ormonde Jayne has grown from creating scented candles on a kitchen table for private clients, to one of the leading niche perfumers with 200 points of sale around the world. Disrupting the world of perfume since its beginning, Ormonde Jayne introduces rare and exquisite ingredients, elevating perfume to an art form. Here Linda sits down with The Cheshire Magazine to discusses her lasting success.

Was there a lightbulb moment to take you from creating scented candles on your kitchen table to registering Ormonde Jayne as a perfume house at Company House and opening your boutique in Mayfair?

I have never been one to market research or make extensive business plans. I tend to be impulsive and I’m more a ‘back of the envelope’ type. When I saw this available space

in a gorgeous Victorian arcade with double height window, I saw a great stage that would lend itself perfectly to perfume. It felt so right as a location for my new range of perfumes and my philosophy. From seeing it for the first time to serving our first customer was a matter of a few weeks which was supersonic for retail openings, as it was long before the era of popups!

I had to convince the landlord of the Royal Arcade that I would be an asset to his arcade and would be able to flourish. It wasn’t easy as he was dubious about my lack of previous retail experience in London! The way I convinced him was by arriving in his office clutching my entire collection of scented candles and flacons and showed him I would create a really gorgeous unique perfumery that would benefit the area.

You have a close team of employees including family and friends. What are the benefits of working with friends and family?

I am very blessed with a loyal team of 33 employees, some of whom have been with us for 15 years. You can’t do that without good working conditions and I have never treated myself as the taskmaster or the big boss. I have always employed people who I believe can do the job better than myself, so of course I have particular respect and give them a carte blanche. The people that make Ormonde Jayne happen are on the same page and I really appreciate their input.

Although not an employee as such, I have had 100% support from day one from my husband. He is always that other pair of eyes, ears, nose and head. My husband is also an

inspirational man on many levels; he is a great cook who conjures up unbelievable dishes cooking by instinct with no recipes. When he wanted his own perfume for his 30th birthday, we made a bespoke perfume together which was the basis for Isfarkand. It had attracted a great deal of attention, and he still gets chased down the street by strangers asking him what he is wearing so always carries a supply of 2mls samples. He has a natural instinct in perfume which compliments my sense of aesthetics.

What are the foundations of Ormonde Jayne?

Translating what I believe to be creative, abstract, unique and appealing ideas into fragrance for our clients, who come from all walks of life. The evidence is seeing people who walked into our boutique in the first weeks returning today to buy the same fragrances, because they return that belief. Although our perfumers are open to everyone, it’s like

being part of a special exclusive community and when asked, our clients enjoy recounting that their perfume is bought from a small British handmade perfume house in Mayfair.

Who is a typical Ormonde Jayne wearer?

It’s impossible to answer because our customers come from all walks of life from all over the world. We can place an Ormonde Jayne flag in every country! We don’t just cater for people from The Middle East or from Europe as we have such a wide variety in our fragrance and ingredient repertoire. We really see all ages from 12 year olds buying their first bottle, to sprightly 94 year olds, but the one thing our customers have in common is that they know a good perfume when they smell one!

We are delighted to count Bryan Ferry, Goldie Hawn, Emma Thompson, Will Smith and others as loyal fans, but even more delighted when I see clients that came into our boutique on the first day, come back each year.

How has Ormonde Jayne evolved in the last 20 years?

On a micro level, it’s a constant evolution because every time we reach the end of a stock item, instead of re-ordering automatically, I think, “can we do better?”, whether it’s a

ribbon or a bottle or the lease on our studio. So, in a very organic way, we are continually upping the anti all the time. For instance, our packaging, is at the very top end of the market and always has been, from the orange linen boxes to the booklet inside the perfume box for our clients to read about their perfume and our philosophy. It gives them something extra and they become part of our brand.

People see that when they hold our overcap and open the bottle, feeling the weight and design, and connecting it to our overhead lighting in the boutique which has the identical shape.

There are two aspects that have shaped our evolution by remaining resolutely static though! One is that we have never compromised on quality from day one, there is no point and we would never do it. If it’s not the best of the best and the purest quality available, we won’t use a second best. The second part of our evolution has been down to remaining privately owned and completely independent. I think I am possibly the only British female perfumer to own their own perfume house after 20 years. It means many

things, but essentially it translates as no one else dictating what we can or can’t spend on an oil or pressuring us to release a fragrance when we are not ready.

On a larger level though what started out as one scented candle made for Chanel’s boutique 20 years ago, followed by a dream little boutique in Old Bond Street, has now evolved into 200 points of sale in the world’s best boutiques, concept stores and

department stores. But with all those points of sales, we can still have a personal relationship with each of the store managers, training our staff and I think the secret to that is because we are still privately owned.

What has been your proudest achievement?

I would say greatest achievement is the work life balance; I run a business but for 48 weeks a year, my two young sons see me first thing in the morning and last thing at night and we can sit down to at least a breakfast together. It’s no mean feat but I did learn to master it fairly early on and I so I would say I am particularly proud of it, and our sons too!

In 2004, I launched Ormonde Man which was the very first ever fine fragrance that contained the ingredient Oudh. No one had heard of it and we would have to spell it out to every beauty editor. Now, it’s a confirmed category and it’s almost mainstream. The other ingredient we introduced was Ta’if rose.

Until our fragrance Ta’if launched in 2005 it was used as an attar in the Middle East but had never been used in a fine fragrance. I travelled to the town of Ta’if in 2004, a dusty hot hilltop town in Saudi Arabia, met with the growers and was given mountains of fresh dates. I wanted to create a fragrance with Ta’if that

also connected its local heritage. Now, many people have heard of Ta’if rose and the town and it’s one of our most popular fragrances loved by men and women.

In 2005, I decided to make our entire collection gender free and erase all traces of men and women, with the exception of Ormonde Woman and Ormonde Man. I took that decision after two particular experiences with men choosing two fragrances that had been classified as feminine. It seemed a radical move fifteen years ago as there was no public debate about gender politics. But today, I think it’s seen as forward thinking and almost obvious to refrain from pigeon holing gender with our sense of smell. So, although it wasn’t intended to be an achievement at the time, I am pleased I followed my instinct and ignored the marketing norms of the time.

What do see for the next 20 years?

I would like to see Ormonde Jayne standing the test of time and built upon what we have already achieved. To be present in only the top end boutiques around the world. I would like my brand to exist side by side to the very best market; And ultimately for my family to be healthy and happy.

Philosophy is to look for ingredients not widely used, recently I managed to track down pure gardenia absolute as it is such an elusive ingredient. That suits me down to a tee! I would also like to collaborate my love of food, Gourmande Jayne features on my website, and is another aspect and having the pleasure of eating it afterwards! Getting Through the

Summer Holidays Mum and nursery school manager, Astone Richardson, offers some real advice for keeping your little ones entertained throughout the summer holidays

B

etween running two successful country nursery settings and having a baby at home things can be decidedly hectic. Whilst our work ethos of fun, exciting all-singing, all-dancing natural activities runs through my blood… the reality of offering this at home as Mummy is very different!

As the summer holidays approach and lots of us are still reeling after working from home with our little ones, inspiration is flailing. We feel lost without our usual day out hotspots and playdates with friends to pass the time and ease the parenting load.

The key for me is to be prepared. Lots of activities can be prepared in advance and put in a box or bag for quick access later. With older children using their interests is always key so picking simple adaptable activities also works well. Lots of these ideas use the outdoors or things you can collect outside on the way to the park or the shops – and outdoor resources are perfect because they are readily available and even better, they are free! Even young children can use natural items (just be careful with certain plants and bugs for skin reactions – there are lots of apps and online sites to identify things to be careful of). A top tip is to always have a bag by the door with hats, sun cream and other essentials so you can leave with a moment’s notice for a quick energy burning ramble!

Children cannot climb the walls when there aren’t any to climb… so really, if in doubt then get outdoors!

EASY IDEAS TO TRY

• Shadow drawing is perfect for all ages. Line favourite toys or household items along a roll of paper and draw round their shadows. These can then be cut/painted/coloured offering lots of creative opportunities.

• Placing different fruit cubes onto skewers develops fine motor skills. Children can even chop the fruit first!

• Den building is a full-day activity. Signs and drawing can be added along with extra rooms to create fortresses. Cheap sheets are a great investment!

• Decorating sticks with paint and wool wraps.

These can be used in play as wands, pencils, swords etc.

• Ice play is perfect on hot days and freezing items inside the ice prolongs interest! Rescuing superheroes from the middle or freezing flowers is always a hit.

• Old eggshells cleaned and filled with paint make perfect paint bombs!

With weddings in 2020 either rescheduled or downscaled to fall in line with current government restriction, Kate Park, Owner of Kate Park Events, discusses the impact on her business on what agencies such as hers can do to help

A

fter nearly twenty years in the wedding industry I thought I’d seen it all, but the last four months has been by far the most challenging time we have ever experienced. It has been heartbreaking for couples to have their weddings cancelled or postponed, agonisingly close to their big day.

When rumours of a lockdown surfaced in early March, at Kate Park Events our priority was as always, our clients. We acted quickly and ensured that contingencies were in place, which meant that once the lockdown was confirmed, we could ensure the transition was as smooth as possible for our couples.

Working our way through our events, we prioritised those affected by the initial three months of the lockdown, but also looked to prepare for its extension; Inevitably we had to

reschedule all of our 2020 weddings to later dates.

Although planning and preparations have continued throughout, everyone in the industry was anxiously awaiting government advice as to when, and how, weddings would be able to resume. We saw the first glimmer of hope with the announcement of rules permitting socially distanced ceremonies with

numbers of up to thirty attendees.

Whilst this news is a positive step for the wedding and events industry, it is unfortunately still very limiting.

Although a ceremony can now take place, the restrictions on numbers, no music, and the lack of celebrations that can follow mean that for most the latest update changes very little.

Despite the unique challenges that we have been presented with, we have remained positive throughout. We are fortunate enough to be planning weddings for some wonderful people who have never lost sight of their big day, and together we will make sure that when we do eventually get the chance to celebrate, we will certainly make the most of it!

As restrictions continue to be lifted, new guidance will make the organisation and running of events more feasible and we are looking forward to getting back up and running. One of the biggest changes we suggest for a safe environment is to bypass the drinks reception. Instead the wedding should flow straight from the ceremony into the wedding breakfast; A glass of champagne will be waiting for a toast to the couple, and individually plated canapes positioned for every guest. Considered table arrangements will make it possible for the bride and groom to circulate and interact with their guests.

Other steps we can take to ensure the safety of our clients and guests include spacious reserved seating at the ceremony, pre-existing ‘bubbles’ seated together and the installation of large podiums around the room in replacement of the usual dance floor.

These are just some of the measures we are recommending and we have lots of new ideas at the ready for almost any situation. For many clients that means continuing to design and plan their weddings so when the restrictions have been lifted, we can celebrate like never before. This month resident vet, James Dutfield, shares advice on keeping our pet dogs cool during the hot summer months Hello every one, this month, with temperatures expected to reach a sizzling 30C+ over the summer we shall be looking at ways to keep our four legged friends cool and safe. These high temperatures can pose a real risk to our animals, so below I have put together some tips and advice on how you can safely enjoy the summer sun with our family pets.

Never Leave Your Dogs In Cars This may sound obvious but every year I have to treat dogs suffering from heat stroke because they have been left in cars during hot weather. Parking in the shade with windows open is NOT a safe option.

The heat and moisture from their breath quickly builds up in an enclosed space, even with a gap in the windows, and they can very quickly within 20 minutes, over heat and it can be fatal.

Protect Your Dogs Paws The 5 second rule; dogs can suffer from burnt paws and pads from

walking on hot tarmac. Place your hand on the pavement and try and hold it there for 5 seconds; if it is uncomfortable or gets too hot for you- then it is too hot for your dog’s feet.

Planning Your Walks Avoid midday sun (the hottest part of the day), either go out in the morning or late afternoon – or not at all. And if possible, choose woodland or shaded walks or walks near water where they can take a dip and cool down, but please be aware of potential stagnant water with blue green algae.

Bring Water With You Either a portable water bottle with attached drinking bowl or have a bowl and bottle of water ready in the car for after a walk. You can pre chill it in the fridge prior to a walk.

Sometimes I carry a water bottle with me to dampen my dogs down mid walk if I feel they are getting too hot.

Cooling Vests And Collars You can buy special loosefitting vests and collars; these have either been precooled in the fridge or dampened before the walk to encourage heat transfer and evaporation.

Keeping Cool At Home Paddling pools in the garden, damp towels to lie on in the shade, garden sprinklers, place a few ice cubes in the water bowl to

keep it cool (not freezing) and provide shade in the garden. Don’t forget to keep our long-haired pets’ coats trimmed short and dematted. Lots of my patients get their summer hair cut! Be extra vigilant for high risk breeds; very young or very old dogs, brachycephalic dogs (pugs, French and British bull dogs etc) and dogs with dark or thick coats.

Signs Of Heat Stroke Noisy loud breathing with heavy panting, drooling, hot to touch, loss of coordination, rapid heart rate, vomiting, diarrhoea, collapse, seizures and cyanosis (turning blue).

First Aid For Heat Stroke Soak the skin with cool (not freezing) water, especially the head, neck, ears tummy and arm pits. Apply wet towels or T shirts over your dog. If you are at home and have a fan, get it blowing onto them to increase the rate of heat transfer and evaporation.

Get to the nearest vet. If you see a dog in a hot car call the police.

Remember; No dog has ever died from missing one walk, but dogs have died from one walk in the heat.

Leading family solicitor Elizabeth Hassall talks about the current ‘new normal’ in family law

W

ho could have predicted a global pandemic and the changes to every facet of everyday life it has meant?

The “new normal”, “furlough” and “social distancing” are all phases that we have not had to contend with in our vocabulary until this dreadful virus took hold. As a Family Solicitor I have continued to work partly from home and more frequently in my office in Chester. It has been tricky getting used to remote court hearings which have been introduced and which have to take place instead of actually attending a court building.

Our new normal is a Judge on the end of a phone or an approved video link.

Each court seems to have a different procedure. Clients do find it difficult and particularly nerve racking on occasion, to have to be in their own home on the phone instead of sitting beside their lawyer when dealing with often acrimonious issues with their estranged spouse or partner. It is equally difficult for the family lawyer to support their client when you do not have the ability of observing body language not only of your client but the opponent.

The court backlogs are frustrating as, although I am hugely sympathetic to the court staff trying to do their jobs often remotely and without the support of colleagues who are ill, the ability to give a timescale to a client for a court hearing or agreed order to be made is nigh on impossible. However, flexible we will always

be with negotiations on finance and children contact time continuing.

Farm and commercial buildings are now capable of being the subject of a formal valuation which was not the case even a few weeks ago. Markets are of course very volatile and therein causes a problem when looking at pension assets or investments as part of a divorce case.

Interim arrangements are often the main focus with couples looking to separate post-lockdown and discussions ensuing about where each will live, who will pay for what and whether a separation deed might address temporary arrangements ahead of a formal divorce being commenced. Variation of existing maintenance orders will be, I am sure, a hot topic as paying parties see their incomes shrink or even lose their jobs. In contrast, some couples have reported that lockdown prompted a decision to part which was festering below the surface and amicable discussions have ensued about how to separate and which process to use.

Alternatives to Court intervention do exist with, in particular, collaborative law as a process not having had much recent publicity but being a particularly attractive service to use if couples are happy to sit in the same room with their respective lawyers and negotiate a deal which is then converted into a consent order. This process attracts parties who want privacy, often swift negotiations and are adamant that they do not want to go to court.

Collaborative law would not be appropriate if court intervention was required which is always the case for some situations.

Dealing with the emotional fall out of a breakdown in a marriage or co-habiting relationship is often very challenging but is particularly heightened at the moment if a potential client cannot take advice from a specialist family lawyer. This has been the flavour over the last couple of months with snatched conversations with prospective clients from their bedrooms or parks when their partner is not about.

Fees are likely to be something that clients are particularly sensitive about but equally a DIY negotiation can often lead to difficulties with a client settling for far less than they might be entitled to or trying to negotiate at the wrong time when it would be better to take preliminary advice and then let asset value recover.

I would say that rather than struggle with a problem on your own do consider having a preliminary discussion with a specialist family lawyer as we may be able to propose some solutions or at least some creative paths which might lead to an answer even if in the short term until the current pandemic is over.

Cocktail Hour The team at Dash Restaurant and Bar in Liverpool city centre share their recipe for a delicious Dash Blue Aloha

INGREDIENTS 20ml Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum 20ml Grey Goose Vodka 20ml Briottet Blue Curacao Liqueur 30ml Coconut Cream 50ml Pineapple Juice 7.5ml Pineapple Puree GARNISH:

METHOD Step 1: To start, we prepare by chilling a tall sling glass with some ice and a dash of water, this will ensure our cocktail stays as cold as possible for our guests enjoyment.

Step 2: Whilst your glass is chilling it’s time to prepare your ingredients, add Bacardi Carta Blanca Rum - 20ml, Grey Goose Vodka - 20ml, Briottet Blue Curacao Liqueur - 20ml, Coconut Cream - 30ml, Pineapple Juice - 50ml and Pineapple Puree 7.5ml into your cocktail shaker.

Step 3: Now it’s time to shake! We do this by shaking our cocktail shaker as hard and fast as possible. We want to make sure all of the star ingredients in the glass shine so we need to make sure they all blend together perfectly.

Do this by shaking for around 20 seconds.

Here is a quick bar tenders trick: always make sure you’re shaking your tin in an open space, never shake the tin directly facing someone as we don’t want any accidents!

Step 4: Once you have shaken and the tin becomes cold to touch then it’s time to check we have that everything is perfectly blended.

Hold the tin in one hand and tap with the palm of your other hand. You want to do this with some force to break the lid away.

Step 5: We want to make sure a vibrant blue colour has been created mirroring the essence of a bright blue ocean sea. Don’t forget to always taste first before serving to make sure your cocktail truly tastes like a tropical holiday in a glass.

Step 6: Grab your pre-prepared glass, fill with ice cubes then take a fine strainer and pour the cocktail over the ice cubes. Once the tin is emptied take a large scoop of crushed ice and place on top of the cocktail glass. The crushed ice will not only help hold the garnish in place but create a more dramatic finish to the cocktail.

Step 7: Now we move onto garnish, we take three bright pink lily leaves and pinch to create a small bunch and place these into the side of the glass. If you are making this cocktail at home you can choose any bright coloured flowers, remember to really have some fun with it!

FACE OFF Love it or hate it, the new BMW 4 Series’ oversized front grille certainly makes it stand out from the crowd

T

he annals of automotive history are dotted with cars that boast lifetime membership of the ‘Marmite’ club and BMW has just released its latest applicant. It’s the 4 Series – traditionally a coupe version of the brilliant but otherwise low-key 3 Series saloon. This car follows much the same formula. It’s still a 3 Series underneath and the engine range is mostly made up of the same four and six cylinder engines you get in the four-door, albeit with mild-hybrid assistance as standard.

As you might have noticed, though, the new 4 Series doesn’t share everything with its more grown-up sister car. Like a rebellious teenager with a sachet of hair dye and some scissors, the

4 Series has given itself a “distinctive” look, swapping BMW’s trademark double grille with this much bigger, more outlandish version.

If you can drag your eyes away from that challenging front end, you’ll find a much more conventional rear and a cabin that follows the usual BMW rules. There’s a big touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and a host of trim options that allow you to choose a sportier or more luxurious image. A convertible version is expected to arrive towards the end of the year, along with a go-faster ‘M4’ version. Until then, the flagship will be the 155mph, 369bhp M440i xDrive.

SPYDER SENSES The jaw-dropping Lamborghini Huracan EVO didn’t need to be any more dramatic, but this is Lamborghini we’re talking about.

Instead of resting on its laurels, the Italian company took away the security of the Huracan’s four-wheel-drive system, put the car on a diet, then set about cutting away the roof. The less-than-snappily named Huracan EVO RWD Spyder is the result, and it’s designed to be “an open-air celebration of lightweight engineering”. Engineered to be more lively than the ‘standard’ Huracan EVO, its meaty V10 engine provides an even meatier 602bhp – enough for a top speed of 201mph.

EASY, TARGA When a new Porsche 911 arrives, differentiating it from the old car can become a three-dimensional game of spot the difference. But when the new ‘992’ version was released last year, this evolution created one of the prettiest Porsches ever made. And now it’s even prettier, because there’s a new Targa version. For those unfamiliar with the breed, it’s essentially a convertible, but only the central part of the roof folds away. That leaves this classic-yet-modern look, with the roll hoop over the top and the huge rear window. But while the roof may be different, the engine is the same 3.0-litre six-cylinder you’ll find in a 911 Carrera. As a result, you can choose whether you’d like 380 or 444bhp. All things considered, that probably won’t be a hardship.

Toyota has reinvented a cult classic, so James Fossdyke went to find out whether the newbie is worthy of the name

A

s many movie producers will tell you, creating modern versions of classic films is laden with risk. Sure, you might get away with the odd sequel here or perhaps an ‘editor’s cut’ with some deleted scenes for the die-hard fans, but completely redesigning a cult film is tough. Just ask the team behind the 2003 remake of The Italian Job. Yet car manufacturers seem capable of pulling it off. When Fiat reincarnated the 500 as a cheerful retro runabout, everyone loved it, and the same was true when BMW breathed life back into the Mini. Sure, there were a few naysayers, and neither car quite has the charm of the original, but the sales figures prove their appeal.

Now it’s Toyota’s turn to bring a car back from the dead, and the Japanese company will probably have high hopes for this one. It’s called the GR Supra, and it’s the long-awaited replacement for the Supra that disappeared from British roads more than two decades ago.

Like that car, the newcomer is a two-seat sports coupe with a powerful 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and it’s designed to play those all-conquering German sports cars at their own game. To make sure it’s a hit, Toyota has even enlisted the help of the Germans themselves.

Yup, the GR Supra – prefixed GR in reference to Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsport team – is the product of a tie-up with BMW, and it shares an engine, gearbox and some suspension components with the German company’s Z4 roadster. They’re even built in the same factory.

Some of the old-school Supra fans – of whom there are many – aren’t especially happy about

this, filling internet forums with talk of sullied bloodlines. I don’t really understand why. If you asked me to choose the two companies that would collaborate to build my next car, BMW and Toyota would be somewhere very close to the top of my list. And without wishing to sound too smug, the new Supra pretty much proves my point.

Even the design, which is not always the strong suit of German or Japanese car makers, is fabulous. It’s somehow rounded and angular all at once, with these expressive curves and edges that mingle to form some Gehry-esque sculpture. And the proportions are spot on. The long nose and short roof give it the perfect sports car silhouette, while the more intricate details finish the piece like a Bvlgari necklace complements a little black dress.

And when you wriggle into the driving seat, you’re ensconced in a cockpit that oozes quality.

It’s as solid and as well built as a Samurai on steroids. The double-bubble roof feels low, like that of a racing car, but there’s plenty of headroom – even if, like me, you were blessed

with the tall gene. You could even call it practical, at a pinch. Yes, you’ve only got seating for two, but the boot’s about the same size as you’ll get in a Ford Fiesta, so it’ll quite happily take a couple of holdalls or even a decent-sized suitcase. A set of golf clubs will just about fit in, too.

And unlike some hard-charging sports cars, it has all the goodies you want. Heated seats, satellite navigation and automatic windscreen wipers are all part and parcel of the asking price – at least on the top-end Pro version I drove. You get wireless phone charging, too and automatic LED headlights.

But the best thing fitted to this car is unquestionably the engine.

It’s a 3.0-litre straight-six, fitted with a pair of turbochargers for good measure. It produces 335bhp, but the way it delivers that power is way more impressive than the numbers suggest. It’s magnificently creamy and quiet when you want it to be, but it can still do the angry, muscular bits.

And it doesn’t half do them well. Mash your foot tight against the floor when you set off from the traffic lights, and you’ll find yourself doing 62mph in just over four seconds. Keep it there, and you’ll keep going right the way to 155mph, where the electronic speed limiter will tell you to stop being an idiot. Assuming the

police don’t tell you first, that is.

To single out that glorious engine for praise, however, is probably to do a disservice to the rest of the car. In a world where so many cars try to isolate you from the mechanics of driving, the Supra does everything it can to connect your hands straight to the wheels. There’s this incredibly satisfying feel for everything that’s going on, yet there’s no vibration or discomfort.

And that directness, combined with the weight distribution, makes the car feel beautifully responsive and balanced. It’s like driving a petrol-powered ballet dancer.

Then there’s the ride. So many sports cars forego comfort in search of better handling, despite the fact even the most hardcore models spend most of their time in town or on the motorway. The Supra, though, does things differently. It’s no magic carpet, but it’s more than comfortable enough to stop speed bumps becoming a chore, and it can still dart from corner to corner like a proper sports coupe should.

This, then, is the sports car I was hoping Toyota would produce. It’s a laugh-a-minute driver’s car that’s civilised enough for commuting and motorways and other things that get in the way of proper driving. This thing’s biggest rivals include the Porsche 718 Cayman – a car I like very much – but if I was going to spend my own money on a sports coupe to drive every day, I’d have this. It’s superb.

Annabelle notes: “In each property light played a key part in the conception of the houses’ design, resulting in a group of buildings characterised, on the outside, by faceted timber forms, nestled between the trees and, on the inside, by highceilinged living spaces, imbued with natural light.�

The love with which this development has been designed is apparent, from the use of exceptional materials right through to the finely crafted minimalist details.

Each home offers an expanse of open plan living space designed to enhance modern family life but also a sequence of in-between rooms which create more intimate spaces for living.

The special plot called for a response to the shape of nearby tree canopies, root protection areas and the pond on site.

Q&A

with

JAMES WILLIAM HOUGH, LEAD ARCHITECT AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF HOUGH ARCHITECTURE LTD How would you describe yourself ?

I am the lead architect and Managing Director of Hough Architecture Ltd. I decided I wanted to be an architect when I was 7 years old – I think my enthusiasm for Lego may have contributed to my career choice and now my 4 year old seems to be heading down the same path if our joint Lego collection is anything to go by.

My business and my son are very much linked, as I first established my own practice a few months before he was born. I have had my fair share of ups and downs and learning curves to contend with since becoming a father and starting up my own business. It was perhaps a little risky to do them both simultaneously, but I think my little boy is my good luck charm, as the business has grown with him.

I was raised in Middlewich on my parent’s farm. I completed all three of my architectural degrees at the School of Architecture at the University of Lincoln.

Between my degrees, I worked for a local architects’ practice based in Macclesfield.

A further influence is Jonathan Hendry, my 5th and 6th year tutor. His teaching laid the foundation of how I view and work in architecture today.

Traditional vs contemporary style?

Neither, because each project requires its own unique approach.

What would you consider your greatest achievement?

Successfully running my own business.

What would your superpower be?

The ability to teleport so I can travel and see what else is out there in this world and beyond. www.hougharchitecture.co.uk

Who are your greatest influences?

Peter Zumthor is my favourite architect as I can resonate with his work and reasonings behind his designs. Not only does he create beautiful buildings, he creates beautiful spaces; often drawing on the senses to do so. It is important to remember that architecture is not just about brick and mortar but about a space and how that space is utilised to its full potential.

P.S. Last book you read?

I am dyslexic so don’t often read books, but I do enjoy my audiobooks and often listen to one while I draw up surveys. The last book I read is Cemetery Road by Greg Iles.
