F OR OV ER A C ENTU RY, TH E MIDLAND H OTEL HA S B E EN A SY MBOL OF EL EGANC E, HI STO RY, AND L UX URY I N MANC HE ST ER . Opening its doors in 1903, this iconic establishment has served countless distinguished guests, including being the site where David and Victoria Beckham shared their first date, and where Charles Rolls and Henry Royce laid the foundations for their legendary Rolls-Royce partnership. But perhaps one of the most cherished traditions The Midland is known for is its afternoon tea. With over 120 years of experience in serving this classic British tradition, the hotel continues to elevate the art of afternoon tea in ways few can match. Once served on the rooftop, The Midland’s afternoon tea experience now resides in a one-
of-a-kind setting: Manchester’s only room dedicated solely to serving afternoon tea, offering guests panoramic views of the stunning architecture in St. Peter’s Square. It is here that luxury meets tradition, and every detail has been perfected for those seeking an indulgent escape from the everyday. Guests can enjoy an array of miniature sandwiches, lovingly crafted cakes by the in-house pastry team, and freshly baked scones served with Mrs. Darlington’s jam and lemon curd. For a unique touch, The Midland offers its very own 1903 Loose Tea, a special blend named in honor of the hotel’s opening year, bringing a rich, historical flavor to every sip.
This year, the Tea Room’s legacy has reached new heights with a recent partnership with Pommery Champagne, adding an extra touch of sophistication to the experience. To celebrate 150 years since Madame Pommery introduced the now-iconic Brut Champagne style, The Midland invites guests to indulge in a glass of this exquisite bubbly, paying homage to Manchester’s significant role as a key export city for Pommery Champagne in 1874. Come for the tea, stay for the history – The Midland Tea Room is where Manchester’s storied past and luxurious present meet in perfect harmony.

My life ... OLIVER SMITH, PRIVATE CLIENT DIRECTOR AT MOËT HENNESSY How would you describe yourself ? I am driven, passionate and like to have fun. I’m more than a little obsessed with enjoying, creating and curating memorable experiences. Life is made for living! Where is home? And work? I live with my wife and son in Crosby (Liverpool). I split my time working between home and the road, travelling all over the country. Mostly the glorious North West as well as Scotland and regular trips to London. Not to mention hosting clients across our fabulous Maisons in France. What did you want to be when you were younger? First a lion (age 4), then a brain surgeon (age 6), SAS soldier for quite some time after that…clearly, I ended up taking a different route. Although, I would still quite like to be a lion for a day!
Where are some of your favourite venues to enjoy a glass of Champagne? Anywhere with friends or family! Top choices outside the UK have to be the exclusive properties which we (LVMH) own in Champagne. Some of which are nestled amongst the vineyards themselves. Accessible strictly by invitation only, the hospitality is absolutely exemplary. These are amongst my very favourite places to be in the world. Intimate, refined, opulent, idyllic.
Name a few of your favourite places to be... Walks on Crosby Beach and Formby Pinewoods. I adore Scotland – it’s such a nurturing, fulfilling place to spend time, rest and reset. Ravello on the Amalfi Coast, simply a magical place. One of my all-time favourite restaurants is Noizé in London. The husband and wife team here have created something exceedingly special. Food that feeds your soul, amazing ambience and top-notch, friendly, unfussy service that makes you feel utterly at home. Oh, and an amazing wine list. My gastronomic happy place.
What or who inspires you? Anyone who succeeds against the odds or in the face of doubt. Closer to home my wife is a source of constant inspiration, along with family and friends. If your tribe can do it – so can you.
Tell us about the Moët & Chandon in Épernay experience. Visiting any wine region totally alters your perception and appreciation for it. For our small community of private clients, we are able to unlock the doors to our historic houses. Granting phenomenal access to the rarest bottles (some of which are entirely exclusive to Private Clients of Moët Hennessy) enjoying exceptional experiences along the way. In this way, we are able to give our clients the keys to the cellars. Immersing them in some of the world’s greatest brands. Etching their names into the history books as we do.
“
Visiting any wine region totally alters your perception and appreciation for it
”
What was the last gift you gave someone? I commissioned a portrait – in watercolour – of my wife and I as a gift to her on our first “paper” wedding anniversary. What podcasts have you been listening to lately? The ‘Go-To Food’ podcast. From chefs to hospitality entrepreneurs, it has lots of insider secrets and hunger-inducing chat. Your mastermind subject? No surprises here, the magical world of wine. What’s been your biggest life lesson? For me personally, trying to approach life with kindness, modesty, empathy and integrity has always served me well. It is certainly, far from easy to consistently embody these values. That said, even if things don’t go your way, I find if you’ve ticked these boxes you can keep your head held high. email: osmith@moethennessy.com lvmh.com 13

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids. chicagothemusical.com

I N DUST DUSTR RY RETU RNS A high-octane third season sees Pierpoint look to the future and take a big bet on ethical investing and the introduction of Kit Harrington’s character Sir Henry Muck
I
ndustry series three has arrived on iplayer and as Pierpoint looks to the future and takes a big bet on ethical investing, Yasmin (Marisa Abela), Robert (Harry Lawtey), and Eric (Ken Leung) find themselves front and centre in the splashy IPO of Lumi, a green tech energy company led by the British aristocrat Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harington), the embodiment of ‘old money’ privilege. Since leaving Pierpoint, Harper (Myha’la) is eager to get back into the addictive thrill of finance and finds an unlikely partner in FutureDawn portfolio manager Petra Koenig (Sarah Goldberg).
Kit Harington who plays Sir Henry Muck discusses his new role. Who is Henry Muck and how does he come into the Industry story? Henry is a rather privileged young man from the English aristocracy who comes into the
story as the CEO of a green energy startup called Lumi. Pierpoint and particularly Harry’s character Robert, are helping Henry launch Lumi as an IPO. Henry has all the best intentions, and thinks he is doing the right and the good thing for the planet. As well as for himself and for everybody else. But he’s maybe not the most astute businessman…
What is Henry and Robert’s relationship? I’ve always loved what Harry (Lawtey) does in this show and I think that Rob and Henry were the natural pairing to put together because Robert has come from a low-income background and has worked his way up into this world — he’s a fish out of water in many 22
“

”
ways — whereas Henry feels like he’s lowered himself to come into this world. He’s dealing with money, which he doesn’t have to do normally, and so they meet coming from completely opposite ends of the spectrum. I remember doing research for a different show a few years ago, reading about how the upper class in the UK and the working class both get on — they are united in their hatred of the middle class. I think there’s something of that in Robert and Henry: they come from opposite ends of the class spectrum, but they kind of like each other because they both f***ing hate the middle class!
How did you come to join Industry? After a few years of not having a proper, season-long arc as a character on a TV show I was like, ‘I miss that. I want to do that again.’ My agent came back to me and said, ‘Do you watch industry?’ I did. I love the show. And they said, ‘Mickey and Kon have an idea for a character that might fit
you.’ And so, I met with them. They told me about Henry Muck and I went, ‘I know that guy. I’ve met that guy.’ And being a fan of the show and knowing them to be good writers and them luckily liking what I do, it all came together.
What was it you liked about the show as a viewer? It had this energy to it and totally it felt very different to anything I had seen before. I think it comes from the fact that they hired a lot of young actors straight from drama school — and they themselves [Mickey Down and Konrad Kay] were creators who were pretty green. I love the music they use; I love the way they film it. I love that it doesn’t allow you to stop — it just pummels you with these incredibly complex words and sentences that you have no idea what they mean… and it just requires you to keep up. All of those things made me think it was incredibly original. 23
Marisa Abela shares some insight into what the new season has in store for her character Yasmin Kara-Hanani. Where do we find Yasmin at the beginning of the third season of Industry? We find Yasmin in a pretty fraught state at the beginning of season three. She’s being hounded by the tabloids because her father is on the run and she is being painted as this privileged heiress, shouldering a lot of the blame for her father’s woes. She’s in a pretty intense place this season. I think she has to compartmentalise in an incredibly intense way as she’s being sort of shamed in a public forum. For someone like Yasmin the way that she presents herself to the world is almost the most important thing to her so this is a living nightmare. She’s trying to throw herself into work, both emotionally because she needs an escape but also because she doesn’t have her father around anymore to help her through life. She’s sort of on her own now, trying to forge a path for herself, but in a very precarious, emotional situation.
How has your character evolved since we first met them in season one? Yasmin’s sense of self has matured since season one. For her, the girl that was getting 24

privy to what’s been going on with her father in a way that other people aren’t. You’re also seeing her dealing with Eric [Ken Leung] for the first time ever, really this season. So, there are definitely new dynamics at play for Yasmin in season three.
”
How has Industry as a whole evolved since the first season? I would say that Industry still focuses on the same world, the world of finance, where cash is king. That defines every character that is placed in that world, but it’s a bigger show now — the world has grown, it doesn’t need to be set in the middle of a bank anymore. Industry series 3 is available now on iplayer
salads for everyone does not exist anymore. She really has evolved into a very different young woman. I think that she is stronger. I don’t think that season one Yasmin would have been able to deal with what season three Yasmin deals with, yet at the end of this season we see what Yasmin holds most valuable, when it really boils down to it, which I think does chime back to the girl we saw in season one.
Where are the relationships between the original grads now? Yasmin is living with both Robert and Harper this season. I would say they’re the closest they’ve been since the middle of season one as a threesome. Robert is offering her a lot of kindness and safety — she needs a place to live and he’s given her one. Harper is her confidante again, the place that she feels that she can be most honest, because Harper is 25

AUTUMN & WINTER TAILORING TIPS Ian Fielding-Calcutt, the founder of tailors Fielding & Nicholson has put together tips for finding the perfect autumn / winter suit. Including mixing textures, channeling the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) and how to get socks right.
#1 - Autumn is a good season for paired down tailoring You can achieve this by wearing separates rather than a suit. Pair tweed or corduroy trousers with a crisp white shirt and a knit sweater for a relaxed yet sophisticated look. For the right setting, a family get together or a lunch date, tailored trousers and a good quality knit can eliminate the need to wear a suit.
#2 - Mix texture Add a touch of texture to your outfit by mixing and matching wool blazers with chinos in earthy tones like olive, navy, or camel for a laid-back yet polished look. Corduroy is also great. It’s timelessly stylish and looks good in a range of colours, but you can’t go wrong with navy. #3 - Embrace the season Elevate your style with two-piece and three-piece suits in warm, autumnal fabrics such as wool flannel, tweed, or herringbone for a timeless and seasonallyappropriate look.
#4 - Wrapping up Not all coats are suitable to be worn with a suit. My rule here is to stick to the look championed by stylish men in the 1940s; King Edward VIII, or Hollywood stars like Cary Grant. Go for trench coats, Crombie’s, Macs or Chesterfields – the more classic the better. Avoid peacoats or double breasted coats in general, and certainly avoid jackets or anything padded.
#5 - Don’t wheel out the summer suit As tempting as it may be to repurpose a summer suit, we should always avoid lightweight and summery fabrics such as linen or seersucker in autumn. They will not provide enough insulation against the cold weather, and they look out of place in an autumn setting.
#6 - The autumn colour palette Steer clear of overly vibrant or summery colours in your suit choices. Opt for deep, rich hues like burgundy, forest green, or charcoal grey that are more in tune with the season.
#7 - Lessons in layering Of course it’s cold outside in autumn, but this is often mixed with central heating in offices, shops and other public buildings. Consider layering to help to keep cool when you know you may spend a day being inside and outside. A cashmere sweater is super soft and breathable.
#8 - Socks If you wanted to introduce a splash of colour or print, then this can be done with socks. The ankle could provide the opportunity for bolder colours, such as red or green, or paisley prints.

#9 - It’s all in the lining Similarly, another opportunity to be bolder is provided by your suit lining, ideally in silk. Speak to your tailor to customise something in a geometric design, stripes, tile prints, or even an illustrative or artwork inspired print.
#10 - Accessorize for the season Invest in a cashmere or Merino scarf in a good tone, go for navy, grey, camel, but avoid anything patterned or printed. You can also wear gloves, but rather than anything made of wool, I’d recommend lined gloves in vintage leather, faux leather or suede. The best colours to choose here would be darker hues (you don’t want people to see your gloves before they see the rest of you!) Black is great, also charcoal or deep navy. SCENTS OF THE SEASON
OUD STALLION Oud Stallion was inspired by personal memories of Thibaud Crivelli, during which he smelled oud wood while attending horse races. This perfume extract sees the depth of oud wood contrast with a smoky leather accord, illuminated with a vibrant and spicy facet of cardamom, saffron and nutmeg. A floral and bright accord of rose, geranium and osmanthus, heightened by a beautiful combination of tonka bean and leather, give Maison Crivelli’s Oud Stallion its sensual character and long lastingness. harveynichols.com
Hinoki & Cedarwood Cologne Intense Jo Malone London’s Hinoki & Cedarwood is an immersive fusion of clean aromatic notes and woody intensity, with a powerful trail of elegant cedarwood and hinoki. It’s an intensely fresh and distinctive scent which is inspired by the grounding presence of the hinoki tree, experienced through the Japanese ritual of forest bathing. jomalone.co.uk
Marrakesh From London-based Chandrika Thomas, Marrakesh is a spicy and floral perfume with an enchanting presence of amber crystals elevates a sensual backdrop of warm musk, cedarwood, and patchouli. A delightful twist of clove, vanilla, and tonka bean, infused with a hint of ylang-ylang, supports the alluring white floral heart of orange blossom, tuberose, and jasmine sambac. This aromatic masterpiece is crowned with the sparkling notes of bergamot, lemon, and mandarin and the fresh green tones of spring florals, hyacinth, and violet leaves. chandrikathomas.co.uk

C la larr e S tob toba a rt My go-to supplements for optimal health In today’s fast-paced world, staying on top of your health can feel like a challenge. I’ve spent years fine-tuning my wellness routine, testing a variety of supplements and superfoods to discover what truly works. I’m excited to share my personal regime with you; supplements that I regularly take, recommend and believe in for maintaining vitality, energy, radiant skin and ageing prevention.
#1 - The Power of NMN: The New Supplement Everyone’s Talking About Let’s start with the most innovative new supplement making waves in the health community: NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide). This compound is a precursor to NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide), which is vital for cellular energy and anti-ageing. As we age, NAD+ levels decline, leading to fatigue, sluggishness and visible signs of ageing. What sets NMN apart is its ability to restore those declining NAD+ levels, rejuvenating your cells from the inside out. Many experts consider it a breakthrough in longevity science, with potential benefits including; improved metabolism, increased energy and even protection against age-related diseases. If you’re serious about wellness, NMN should be on your radar. It’s my go-to for staying sharp, active and youthful. With this supplement I drop a scoop of the powder under my tongue and let it absorb for 1 minute. youthandearth.com
#2 - Jolt Award-winning wellness supplement, Jolt, is the world’s first ultimate age blocker and also features NMN as a key ingredient. In addition to NMN, Jolt contains trans-resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant renowned for its anti-ageing properties. Resveratrol helps combat oxidative stress and inflammation, two primary contributors to ageing. Jolt also includes other essential nutrients that are not often consumed in the average diet. joltmyworld.com 40
#3 - Verve Greens: A Scoop of Vitality Every morning, I kickstart my day with Verve Greens, a superfood blend packed with 80 active ingredients, including greens, minerals, vitamins and superfoods. A single scoop mixed with water delivers a powerhouse of nutrition that supports energy, digestion and overall wellbeing. It’s my daily insurance policy for meeting my nutrient needs, especially when life gets busy. vavaverve.com
#4 - Advanced Nutrition Skin Youth Biome For radiant, youthful and healthy skin, I can’t recommend the Skin Youth Biome enough. This supplement is backed by scientific research and specifically targets skin health by supporting the gut-skin connection. I take one capsule with breakfast every day and the results speak for themselves. advancednutritionprogramme.com
#5 - The Nue Co. Prebiotic + Probiotic: Gut Health Hero Gut health is at the core of overall wellness, which is why I include The Nue Co. Prebiotic + Probiotic in my routine. This blend is designed to balance your gut microbiome, supporting digestion, immunity and even skin health. It’s perfect for anyone looking to enhance gut health and address issues like bloating or indigestion. I take one daily to keep my digestive system functioning smoothly, which in turn helps my energy levels, mood and immune system. bodykind.com

#6 - Altrient Liposomal Vitamin B and Mineral Complex Absorption is key when it comes to vitamins, which is why I love Altrient’s Liposomal Vitamin B Complex. The liposomal delivery ensures that your body absorbs more nutrients compared to traditional supplements. I take a sachet with breakfast to support energy production, brain function and general well-being. healf.com
#7 - Altrient Liposomal Vitamin C 1000 If ever I feel a little run down or tired, I reach for Altrient Liposomal Vitamin C. Known for its immune-boosting properties, this high-potency formula helps strengthen my immune system and keeps me resilient during colder months or after a stressful week. healf.com
#8 - LMNT Electrolyte Drink Mix Hydration is crucial, especially when you’re active. I use LMNT’s electrolyte mix to replenish lost minerals after workouts or long days. It’s packed with sodium, potassium and magnesium—essential for maintaining energy and preventing cramps, without any added sugar. healf.com
#10 - Mycologic Drops: Mental Clarity in a Bottle Mental sharpness is essential in my line of work and Mycologic Drops have become a daily staple for boosting cognitive function. This mushroom-based supplement enhances brainpower, helping me stay clear-headed and focused throughout the day. mycologic.co.uk
#11 - HINNAO Technology: Instant Absorption Innovation in supplements is constantly evolving and HINNAO Technology is at the forefront. Their liquid supplements, including glutathione and other high-impact nutrients, are designed for sublingual absorption. This means faster, more effective results, as the nutrients bypass the digestive system and enter directly into the bloodstream. Glutathione: My go-to for detoxification, glutathione helps eliminate free radicals and toxins from the body, boosting immunity and overall health. It’s particularly beneficial for maintaining energy levels and combating illness. hinnao.com
Staying fit, healthy and youthful doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right supplements, you can support your body’s natural processes and enhance your vitality. Whether you’re looking to boost your energy, sharpen your mind or simply feel better in your own skin, these supplements have made a lasting difference on my wellness journey. While supplements can be a powerful tool, they work best when paired with a balanced diet, regular exercise and a positive mindset. If you’re
#9 - Organifi Shilajit Gummies: Pre-Workout Power Shilajit is an ancient superfood and this is my go-to for pre-workout energy and endurance. Before a gym session or a game of padel, I take two Organifi Shilajit Gummies to power through my workout with added focus and stamina. healf.com
ready to take your health to the next level, I highly recommend starting with NMN and exploring these other incredible supplements that keep me at my best.

Quirkiest Dog Friendly Pubs Discover the five quirkiest dog-friendly pubs around, where your pup is looked after as well as you are, according to Eat Drink Met
P
erusing places that not only allow your pooch in, but make them feel like a valued patron isn’t always easy, but for the over 30% of UK households that own at least one dog, it’s essential! Below are the best options, ranked by new website and app Eat Drink Meet, featuring pubs perfectly placed for long walks, pick ‘n’ mix treat stations and a puppy napping area.
with a ‘pub dog’ will know how much of a game changer this is: no more longing eyes as your own dishes are served!
#4 - Refresh & Revenate: The Honey Bee, Wilmslow Much like their owners, our four-legged friends need to refresh and rejuvenate, and with a dedicated ‘hydration station’ complete with lots of open spaces outside and roaring fires inside should the temperature drop, the Honey Bee in Wilmslow is the ideal place to do this.
#3 - Where Your Dog Can Make A Spooky Friend: Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, Edinburgh
#1 - A Pub In The Park: The Old Bull & Bush, London Any pet owner will know how much pups love a park, especially if it’s somewhere new for them to explore with their noses. The Old Bull & Bush, a stylish dog-friendly venue in the heart of London sits on the edge of Golders Hill Park, so is ideal for your furry friend to explore before or after you sit down for lunch. Plus, the park is home to the dog-friendly Golders Hill Park Zoo, a small yet charming attraction which is home to a number of exotic mammals, birds and even has a butterfly house!
You may or may not be familiar with the tale of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier or Dandie Dinmont Terrier who became known in 19th-century Edinburgh for spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until the loyal pooch himself died on 14 January 1872. If you don’t, you and your dog can get familiar with him at Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, a dogfriendly pub in Edinburgh, where his spirit is still said to wander around. Patrons have reported hearing ghostly barks or feeling things brush against their legs. Supposedly more receptable to spirits than humans, your dog may enjoy getting acquainted with a friend from the beyond.
#5 - Treat Your Dog Like The Royal They Are: Philharmonic Dining Rooms, Liverpool Did you know one of the most famous venues in Liverpool, the ‘Phil’ – or Philharmonic Dining Rooms – is actually pet-friendly? Pooches are allowed everywhere but the restaurant and grand lounge, so your dog can live like the perfect prince or princess they are in this little slice of luxury in the heart of the city centre. eatdrinkmeet.co.uk
#2 - Tail-wagging snacks: The Three Crowns, Staffordshire Locally famous for being a super accommodating dog-friendly pub, The Three Crowns in Stone boasts a wide selection of treats for your pets. Anybody 51

ecently, I’ve been thinking a lot about why we travel. Is it the spirit of adventure driving us to discover new places or is it our desire to take time out from our busy lives to relax – or both? For me, there is often one big thing that inspires me when it comes to choosing where to go next; I love to try different cuisines, an interest I’m sure many of you share! So, where to go to treat your tastebuds?

weekend away Craig Hough visited Portugal’s second city for a stay at NH Collection Porto History It all started with a gentleman from the Portuguese Royal House, José Anastácio da Silva Fonseca. He and his wife, Joana Meireles Guedes de Carvalho selected the top of a steep hill to build their new home. It was the 18th century and an era of luxury and ostentation and the home to one of the richest families in the city had to demonstrate its wealth by surpassing all others. Soon, the halls of the "Casa dos Guedes" became the site of meetings of Portugal’s high society and spectacular balls were organised. During this turbulent political era, numerous business agreements, conspiracies and business were also plotted within its walls. In only two generations, the luxury, opulence and splendour of the gold leaf and the velvet curtains were converted into an improvised field hospital. The civil war that raged across the country led to the palace’s occupation by combating sides during the "Siege of Porto". The Guedes da Silva family was forced to abandon it and take refuge in their home outside of the city. At the end of the war, during the reign of María II, the Palàcio da Batalha was once again returned to its owner. Ten years had passed since the occupation and the "Siege of Porto" and the city had changed. The family rehabilitated and modernised the building, renting it out to the Portuguese government who turned it into a communications palace. Only a few years later, this rental became a permanent sale and the Palàcio de Batalha, one of the icons of the city’s history, became the city’s communications centre.
Location Beaches, gastronomy and great cultural offerings have made Oporto one of the most vibrant cities in southern Europe. Located in the central Plaza de Batalla, in the heart of the city, the NH Collection Porto Batalha is 64
only a short walk away from the busy high street, la Rua de Santa Catarina. The hotel is also a short walk from Gaia where you can cross the iconic Luís I Bridge to visit the wineries.
Design History is seeping through the walls of the former palace. The restoration project sought to respect the original architecture, while also offering the building a contemporary atmosphere. Facilities The heart of the building, which once housed the palace kitchens hosts a spa with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, Turkish bath, treatment cabins and a gymnasium. The hotel also offers a wide selection of massages, fitness classes and personal trainer service (upon request).
Food & Drink Prepared fresh each morning, the hotel’s breakfast buffet includes a wide variety of pastries, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, breads and much more. You can even create your own fresh fruit juice, smoothie or milkshake, you simply choose the ingredients and a member of the team will make it for you. designed as if it were the living room in a home with table lamps, fresh flowers in vases, small sculptures and comfortable sofas. The decoration in the rest of the hotel pays homage to the building’s recent past with small references such as plaques with the room numbers –which resemble ancient postcards– or postage stamps, situated in some parts of the hallways and the lifts.
Rooms The Plaza de Batalha is one of the liveliest locations in Porto, but the rooms offer a tranquil retreat. The design is both elegant and serene with different tones of grey on the walls. Light is the primary element of these rooms with large windows or balconies opening up to the city. My Experience NH Collection Porto Batalha is a great base to explore Portugal’s second city. Porto has become a popular gastronomic destination with a wide variety of food offerings and wineries to sample. The hotel looks out onto Batalha Square, which hosts a maker's market where you can pick up some local delicacies and products or enjoy a cocktail or two. NH Collection Porto Batalha has a hard-working team that offers a first-class service. The room was incredibly comfortable and although it looked out onto the bustling Batalha Square, you could hear no noise in the room. If you're looking for a culinary adventure, add Porto to your travel list and reserve a room at NH Collection Porto Batalha for a relaxed, comfortable stay with tremendous service. nh-collection.com/en 65

AS Sa a nctua nctuarr y for Alignin ligning g the Bo Body, S o ul & S pirit To celebrate the SHA Wellness Clinic’s 15 years of wellness, Rachel O’Hare took a trip to the company’s flagship clinic on Albir Bay
ÒP
revention is better than cure” wrote the Dutch philosopher Erasmus 600 years ago. Today lifestyle is a major contributory factor to illness, and it is estimated that more than 70 % of diseases could be prevented through change in lifestyle. As we grow older as a population it’s increasingly important to put measures in place so that our quality of life is not affected in the last third of our lives. Having experienced a stressful month, I visited SHA Wellness at the end of June with an old school friend. The centre had come up in many conversations and the hope of losing a few pounds in the run up to Summer appealed. I obviously realised I was not going on a typical girls holiday and knew as well as no alcohol, meals would be calorie controlled and zero caffeine. Prior to our visit we were encouraged to download the SHA app and view the range of activities on offer. We were given our itineraries in advance of our stay and encouraged to eat healthily to maximise our experience. Post visit guests are also encouraged to
access their E health platform which provides guests online access to the clinics experts to enable them to carry on their wellbeing journeys. Its flagship clinic is located on the Albir Bay next to the Sierra Helada Natural Park; there are wonderful trails that guests are encouraged to enjoy. The area enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year and so is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities all year round. Its approach takes influences from both Mediterranean and Japanese cultures who experience the longest lifespan. We arrived from Alicante airport having had transfers organised by the clinic and were immediately impressed with the clinic’s sleek modern architecture and clean lines. The clinic is state of the art. SHA adopts an integrative approach and incorporates new technologies and experts at the forefront of their field. SHA are global leaders when it comes to brain health, preventative diagnosis, 69

regenerative medicine, anti-ageing medicine and nutrition. The founder, Alfredo Bataller Parietti, credits his own health journey for the creation of SHA. When suffering from digestive problems for over 30 years and receiving a worrying diagnosis a doctor specialising in integrative medicine cured him in just 30 days. SHA promises a life changing experience and out of every 100 people to visit SHA 53 have visited before. For first time visitors to SHA it is recommended a health programme in line with ones personal goals. I opted for a four day Rebalance and Energise programme. My friend opted for the weeklong programme. The itinerary is full and does not allow for much down time. The app helpfully reminds you of your schedule and gives reminders throughout your day. The programme starts with a bioenergetic assessment, full medical and cardiology consultation to gather a full picture of your health. Guests also receive an in-depth neurocognitive consultation to assess current level of brain function. Based on these assessments guests undergo cutting edge neurocognitive stimulation treatments. My score was decidedly below average but hoped would improve from benefiting the ozone therapy and holistic treatments and natural therapies on offer. Body fat analysis is also carried out by state-of-the-art machines.

I was told to gain more muscle as this would be beneficial in later life to me and help to prevent conditions such as osteoporosis. The range of professionals that can be accessed offer the best in advice. Dr Mera particularly stood out with his expertise on anti-ageing and hormone issues. Marina Domene, the nutritionist, also helped with diet plans and supplements. I was advised to take three additional supplements formulated by SHA and available in the clinic’s own shop: the sleep and relax, omega 3 krill and resilience supplements. Top brain foods recommended to me included green, leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, fermented foods including miso and sauerkraut and fatty fish. Dark chocolate as an occasional treat at 70% cocoa content. The food, in contrast to many European wellness clinics, does not seem too restrictive. I did experience headaches as naturally you are detoxing from caffeine, carbohydrates and sugar. The presentation is exceptional. The food after two days seems energy boosting and is all organic and locally produced. After two days a visible difference could be seen in our skin and eyes and energy levels and sleep improved. Miso soup is given at mealtimes and preferably no water. As well as shots of cider vinegar pre lunch and dinner we

were given Daikon tea made from a purifying Japanese radish. It has a cooling effect and is anti-inflammatory. Daikon itself is highly nutritious, containing phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium. Three menus are on offer: the SHA menu, bio light or the Kushi diet which is designed for weight loss based around 700/800 calories. Extra protein normally fish can be requested. Treatments range from colonics, cryotherapy, lymphatic drainage massage, cupping, acupuncture and shiatsu. My friend experienced the corporal icone cellulite machine and was impressed with the results. A standout treatment we both experienced was the hydro energetic detox. This consisted of a hydrotherapy bath with essential oils and salts followed by a heated algae wrap and finished with a hosing of cold water. There is a designated hydrotherapy spa area and sauna area for guests to enjoy. Guests can use cold water plunge pools and traditional saunas in between treatments or pre-dinner. For guests who wish to maintain their physical exercise group training, private training, hikes,
padel and 1-2-1 pilates either mat or reformer pilates can be arranged by Guest Relations. I had 2 reformer pilates sessions with Luiz who had trained in pilates for over 30 years. He assessed me and gave me a range of new exercises to incorporate into my training. The Leader’s Performance Programme is a specially devised programme for CEOs and aims to reduce burn out, reset and focus busy individuals. Many guests travel individually to SHA and it provides a space to escape the hectic pace of life they experience. SHA has recently introduced Advanced Cellular Regeneration Therapy for those seeking a solution to extreme exhaustion with no specific cause, beneficial to women experiencing menopause, those suffering from ulcers, skin lesions, long covid or chronic bacterial infections. SHA has also introduced a new Sexual Health unit which is built on the philosophy that sexual wellness is part of overall wellness and overall wellness can affect sexual wellness. SHA also has impressive expansion plans. Mexico has opened in Isla Mujeres and is the first medical spa destination to launch in Latin America. SHA Emirates at Al Jurf will open by 2025. Both new destinations will include real estate with fully serviced private residences marking a new concept in long term investments into health and wellbeing. SHA really is leading the way in wellness and the facilities on offer are state of the art. We left feeling energised and refreshed and ready to tackle ongoing challenges. shawellness.com Instagram: @shawellness Facebook: SHA 71

There are endemic species that have been preserved to this day, numerous archaeological sites and caves from the Guanche era and remnants of a more recent past that help us understand how people lived here before our time. Among the most important findings is a Guanche vessel recovered in one of the caves of the reserve, which is exhibited in the museum.

Great Estate BMW’s fast saloon cars are legendary, but the German brand is only just rediscovering its love of the fast estate car. We haven’t seen a ‘Touring’ version of the incredible M5 saloon since 2010, but now BMW has brought it back with a bang. Like the four-door car, the M5 Touring has a stonking 717bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines the advantages of electric power with the blood and thunder of a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine. It’ll drive up to around 40 miles on electric power alone, but when you use the petrol motor as well, it’ll get from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, which makes it faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe. And though the top speed is limited to 155mph as standard, you can specify a top speed of 190mph if you so wish. Either way, though, you get an ample 500-litre boot. bmw.co.uk

hose who choose to remember the James Bond film Die Another Day – the Pierce Brosnan one with terrible CGI, Madonna and the Eden Project – may be familiar with the Aston Martin Vanquish. First introduced in the early 2000s, just in time for John Cleese to make it invisible, it was the flagship sports car in Aston Martin’s range. And now the nameplate is back, having last been seen in 2018. Apparently John Cleese was not to blame for its disappearance that time. Anyway, while it may not have the gadgets of Bond’s Vanquish, the new model comes with plenty of toys, including Aston’s latest touchscreen infotainment technology and digital instrument display, as well as
a luxurious cabin with sports seats and a low driving position. It’s all designed to be cool, calm and comfortable, ideal for blasting across continents (preferably not while being chased by a villain in a modified Jaguar). And, of course, it’s utterly beautiful, with a great long nose and an aerodynamically sculpted body that includes a sharply cut ‘kamm’ tail inspired by 1960s racing cars. But key to this car’s speed is its 5.2-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine, which churns out an impressive 824bhp. That’s enough to take the car to 214mph, but Aston Martin claims the car is about more than straight-line speed. New suspension and traction control logic means it should handle properly, too. AUDI DO THAT?
loves
Hot on the heels of the latest Audi A3 is its high-performance sibling, the RS 3. Although it’s still powered by the same awesome 2.5-litre, five-cylinder petrol engine and it still churns out just under 400bhp, Audi has updated the exterior design and the suspension, making the car sportier and faster on a race track. As before, it’s offered in five-door Sportback and four-door Saloon forms, while there’s a high-tech cabin that’s now even more motorsport-orientated than ever before, thanks to a new steering wheel and a redesigned centre console. Some new paint jobs are available, too, and you can get a carbon exterior package that sees the exterior ‘jewellery’ finished in carbon fibre. Audi RS3, from £56,675, audi.co.uk
POWER TR I P The Rimac Nevera is not a household name, but it’s certainly worthy of note. With 1,888bhp from its all-electric powertrain, it’s capable of 0-124mph (not 0-62mph, you’ll notice) in 4.42 seconds, and it’ll get to 186mph (300kph) in 9.22 seconds. In short, it’s very fast indeed, but clearly it isn’t fast enough. That’s why Croatian manufacturer Rimac has built the Nevera R, which ups the ante with almost 2,100bhp and a maximum speed “with manufacturer oversight” of 256mph. Just 40 examples will be made, with extra downforce for fast cornering and stickier new tyres, as well as improved steering feel and revamped traction control. They’re expected to sell out almost as quickly as they accelerate. Rimac Nevera R, £POA, rimac-automobili.com

The Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster might look oddly familiar, writes James Fossdyke, but this is a company that’s doing things a little bit differentlyn
A
bit like Unilever or Amazon, Ineos is one of those companies that crops up in the most unexpected of places. Whether it’s high-alcohol hand sanitizer or underperforming football teams, Ineos owns it all. Headed up by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, this is the company behind plastic food packaging, Manchester United, and the Belstaff clothing company. And now this jack-of-all-trades has turned its attention to building a car. While it’s true the company has no experience of such a thing (unless you count sponsoring the Mercedes-AMG F1 team), it has hired some know-how from elsewhere and pooled its resources to build the Grenadier – a kind of rufty-tufty 4x4 that’s intended to carry on where the old-shape Land Rover Defender left off. It’s a rugged and agricultural thing, but Ineos clearly decided it wasn’t rugged and agricultural enough, so it introduced a pick-up truck version. It’s called the Quartermaster, and it’s a very rugged thing indeed. Unlike the driver – me – who can’t even claim to be especially agricultural. Nevertheless, even I quite like the attitude of the Quartermaster. Here is a boxy 4x4 for which form most defi nitely follows function, and though the design is a straight rip-off of the old Defender, I kind of like it. As long as you look at it from the front, that is. The rear end design makes the Quartermaster look like a Lego model of itself, with those weirdly round lights and low tailgate. But whatever you make of the overall shape, the details are quite impressive. There are rails along the sides so you can clip equipment to the doors – apparently the system is based on the clips used in cargo planes – and they can come in quite handy if you’re working or camping with the vehicle. Similarly, Ineos has moulded cupholders into the tailgate so you can sit there with a drink on a summer’s evening, and there are removable glass panels in the roof so you can poke your head out to see better when off-roading. Admittedly, most customers won’t use any of those features, but it’s indicative of the Quartermaster’s approach. As is the interior, which
isn’t exactly beautiful, but does come with lots of clever features, including buttons designed to be used while wearing gloves and overhead switches designed to make you feel like an airline pilot. There is a central screen, but it plays the role of an instrument cluster and infotainment screen at the same time, so it isn’t particularly good at either job, but then nobody is coming to a Quartermaster in search of cutting-edge in-car technology. This is a utilitarian truck, so the emphasis is on toughness and customisation, rather than luxury. That’s why the cabin trim all feels chunky and solid, and the switchgear is all IP-rated for water and dust so you can hose out the footwells. Admittedly, you can’t hose down the dash – it isn’t that waterproof – but the floor can be hosed and mopped. It even has drain plugs to help dry it out after. And those aren’t the only features you can have. With an eye on customisation to suit drivers’ needs, the Quartermaster can be ordered in basic form, to which you can add all sorts of toys, or in one of two pre-ordained trim levels: Fieldmaster and Trialmaster. The former is the more luxurious of the two, with leather seats and a premium sound system, while the Trialmaster gets off-road goodies such as a raised air intake and off-road tyres. So far, so rugged, but there’s a problem. You see, to count as a pick-up truck (at least for tax purposes), the vehicle has to be able to carry more than a metric tonne in its load bed, and the Quartermaster can’t. Not by a long chalk. Especially not if you go for the diesel version,

Ineos Grenadier Quartermaster Price: From £66,215 Gearbox: Eight-speed automatic Engine: 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six petrol 0-62mph: 8.8 seconds Top speed: 99mph Power: 282bhp
instead of the ultra-thirsty petrol version we tested. That means there are no tax breaks, and the load bed simply isn’t as useful as that of a Ford Ranger or a VW Amarok, even though the 3,500kg maximum trailer weight is on a par with those class leaders. But whatever the loading capacity, the Quartermaster defi nitely feels like a utilitarian truck on the road, and more so than most pick-up trucks. The Ford Ranger isn’t exactly a magic carpet, but it’s way more comfortable than the Quartermaster, which has the capacity to pulverise your back on even the smoothest of European motorways. And the steering is dreadful, with such a slow response that you fi nd your arms flailing like you’re in some kind of comedy cat fight. It isn’t all bad, though. There’s a choice of two engines, but both are 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-sixes from BMW, and they’re both brilliant. The petrol is quite thirsty — it drinks unleaded like it’s going out of fashion —
82
but it makes a great noise and it has plenty of power. And it isn’t that much less economical than the diesel, which still won’t return more than 30mpg. But the diesel is a little better on fuel, and it has a chunky, muscular character that suits the Quartermaster, even if it isn’t as quiet on the road. Then there’s the off-road capability, which is tough to beat. The Grenadier is based on a heavy, but rock-solid chassis that gives it enormous strength. To that, Ineos has bolted tough suspension that gives it plenty of ground clearance and axle articulation, allowing it to tackle pretty much anything you can throw at it. Mud, water, rocks… You name it, there’s very little that can deal with it as easily as the Quartermaster. Overall, then, the Quartermaster is quite good at what it does – namely conquering any terrain you can throw at it – but it’s a bit of a one-trick pony. It isn’t very comfortable, it’s terrible to drive on the road, and though the engines are great, they’re quite thirsty. But you can’t help but respect the capability, and for those who love the look and the attitude, nothing else will do.

This is made possible by the track system that is fully concealed in the floor – the result of 15 years of development. This creates a feeling of vast wide-open spaces, even when the windows are shut. Sky-Frame sliding doors are available up to a maximum of 5 meters high and 3.5 meters wide allowing vast expanses of opening spaces to be created. Curved and sloped options are also available.
The excellent sound and thermal control standards met by Sky-Frame technology mean options are available for both double and triple glazed depending upon location, climate and insulation requirements. Virr tual Reality in Vi
K itchen Design Yakov Salomon on how Raison Home are elevating spaces with innovation
I
n the world of high-end kitchen design, staying ahead of trends requires more than just an eye for aesthetics—it demands innovation. One of the most exciting revolutions transforming the industry today is the integration of Virtual Reality (VR). Originally embraced by gamers and tech enthusiasts, VR has found its way into the heart of interior design, reshaping how we conceptualise and create luxurious kitchens. In the realm of high-fashion homes, VR is not just a tool—it’s an experience.
A New Dimension of Immersion For years, 2D blueprints, sketches, and mood boards were the designer’s go-to tools for helping clients envision their dream kitchens. While these methods offer a sense of style and still very much have their place, they often fall short in conveying the feeling of a space—the scale, the flow, and how light interacts within the room. As a designer who uses VR I’ve seen how it has changed all of that. Slip on a VR headset, and suddenly, you’re not imagining the space— you’re in it. Picture this: gliding through a full-scale 3D virtual model of your future kitchen, walking alongside an
island draped in quartz, or gazing at bespoke cabinetry illuminated by soft, elegant lighting. With VR, clients can now “test drive” their kitchens long before any construction begins, allowing them to truly experience the design. It’s not just about seeing a kitchen; it’s about feeling how every element interacts within the room.
Enhanced Collaboration and Bespoke Customisation The bespoke nature of kitchen design in homes requires seamless collaboration between designer and client. VR introduces a new level of dynamic interaction, where changes to finishes, materials, or even layout can be visualised on the spot. Whether it’s trying out a brass tap over brushed nickel or experimenting with different lighting schemes, VR allows everyone to engage deeply with the design process. This heightened customisation ensures that each design is a reflection of the person’s unique style,

Homes and Interiors
down to the last detail. From sleek, minimalist aesthetics to bold, eclectic spaces, VR ensures the kitchen evolves to meet every individual’s vision— creating spaces that aren’t just functional but truly reflective of luxury living.
Streamlining the Process with Precision Beyond the wow factor, VR brings an unparalleled level of efficiency to the design process. The ability to accurately visualise the final outcome reduces the need for multiple revisions and minimises the risk of costly errors. Imagine fast-tracking the approval, because you have already walked through your future kitchen and signed off on every detail. This technology also helps identify potential design flaws early on, saving time and ensuring smooth project execution. For designers and clients alike, this level of precision is invaluable. No more second-guessing decisions; the final product becomes a tangible reality even before construction begins, ensuring peace of mind and confidence at every stage.
The Future of Design As Virtual Reality continues to evolve, its impact on kitchen design will only grow. With the potential to refine user-friendly interfaces and more accessible technology, VR is poised to become a standard in high-end design studios. The ability to offer clients an immersive experience makes it a cutting-edge tool that combines style with practicality—tailor-made for luxury living spaces.
Bringing Vision into Focus Virtual Reality isn’t just a trend; it’s redefining the possibilities of kitchen design. Its ability to blend innovation with beauty and personalisation is what sets it apart from traditional methods. For those looking to reimagine their kitchens, VR offers the chance to explore the space of your dreams long before it takes physical shape. In a world where luxury meets cuttingedge technology, your dream kitchen is just a virtual step away. raisonhome.com To see some VR walkthroughs visit the web article at thecheshiremagazine.co.uk

Q&A
with
ABBY OLSON,
DESIGN DIRECTOR OF THE RUG COMPANY How would you describe yourself ? I’m the Design Director of The Rug Company, a brand that I have been with for over a decade. I’m someone who thrives off change while staying balanced and grounded; I think that’s key to enjoying my lifestyle here in Brooklyn. I’m a lover of many things – textiles, vintage shopping, art exhibitions, being near the water, hiking and camping, live music, picnics, reading multiple books at a time. I’m a triple fire sign – which can be quite confusing for an introvert – but I really do identify with being very driven, persistent, dynamic, and optimistic. Tell us a bit more about you... I was born and grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, just above the Pennsylvania border. I graduated from State University of New York at Oneonta, a school at the edge of the Catskill Mountains, with a degree in Graphic Art. Growing up, my dad built a darkroom in our garage where we would develop photographs together on nights and weekends. I took photography courses in both high school and university but wanted to pursue it further, so I ended up enrolling in a traditional photography program in Florence, Italy to learn more about the medium. This really opened my eyes to how the arts can transform your life. Before joining The Rug Company, I worked for years in art galleries and fast-paced screen-printing shops. What have been some of your best jobs/experiences at work and why? I realised early on that the journey of creating and releasing a product is something that brings me so much fulfilment
and joy. From the initial conception to working with our mills in Nepal on final execution, it’s truly special to witness our ideas eventually turn into a physical product, especially when it becomes beloved by others. Seeing how our clients use our rugs is a huge cherry on top. Every time I see our rugs in magazines, movies, boutique stores or hotels, it makes you think, wow, I had a hand in making this space come to life. I’ll never get over how great that feels. Traditional vs contemporary style? A mix of both is what I gravitate towards. I love the soul and depth behind traditional pieces, with the innovation and intentionality of contemporary design. What would you consider your greatest achievement? What’s given me the most fulfilment is growing our design team throughout the years. None of the incredible things we do would be possible without them. We have such a talented group of designers in NYC, London, and Spain – each bringing something unique to the brand with their own specialties, passions, and hobbies. It has been an organic and intuitive process that has slowly but surely unfolded over the years, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it. therugcompany.com
