An insider’s guide to art buying for the home

Why you need to pack a bag and head to the Lakes this Spring

My life ... ROB M CKAY, FO U NDE R & M AN AG IN G D IRE CT O R AT S HERRIN G T O N A S S O CI AT E S How would you describe yourself ? Exceptionally driven and motivated to make a difference by helping our clients achieve sustainability, by recruiting the right type of leaders. I’m a Cestrian, born and bred and am incredibly proud of my city. I’m a massive advocate of access to nature for everyone and believe the country needs to focus on restoration and rewilding at pace in order to halt the decline of nature. We’re one of the most nature-depleted countries on the planet and it’s not fair that so many disadvantaged communities have no access to nature, so I feel incredibly privileged to live in leafy Cheshire, but also sad that so many people aren’t so lucky. Where is home? And work? Home is a small village just on the outskirts of Chester. We’ve always lived close to Chester as it’s the best city on the planet. Likewise, the office is in the city centre, and I love nothing more than enjoying a walk around the walls or through town on my lunch break. What did you want to be when you were younger? A Royal Marine! I was fit enough too then and the travel really appealed. Name a few of your favourite places to be... The Sandstone Trail is my happy place. Since I was a teenager I’ve spent as much time as I could running, strolling or dog-walking up on the Bickerton Hills. If ever I’ve had a hectic week, you’ll find me up there. Either there or Snowdonia (sorry Eryri!). I love the mountains, especially in the snow. The Glyders or Moel Siabod are my two favourite hikes. For eating out I love Pars Kahve on Watergate Street – can’t beat a good hummus and flatbread with a coffee at lunchtime. For something a bit more filling, we like visiting the little independents in Chester Market. Anglesey is our family holiday favourite, the kids love Rhosneigr. What or who inspires you? My team inspires me daily. My hardworking wife and business partner Joanne is my rock. Also our Head of Future Leaders Joe who

I’m a Cestrian, born and bred and am incredibly proud of my city

has brought so much energy to the business. He’s shown great resilience and maturity through difficult times and I love celebrating success with him. My amazing daughters inspire me constantly and are my driving force for getting out of bed every morning. What was the last gift you gave someone? I gave Joe an extra half day’s holiday this week, does that count? Quite a good question actually and it’s made me realise I probably need to give more, although we’re always donating to charitable causes so if philanthropy counts, I think I’m pretty generous actually. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I was a (pretty bad) DJ in my younger years and still love to get the decks out. It’s my therapy. Who or what would you place in room 101? Green-washers and equally, green-hushers, candidates who don’t show for interviews, anyone who lacks common courtesy and manners. Your mastermind subject? Our work is about recruiting and developing leaders who can deliver sustainability, so I’ve spent a long time researching what constitutes good leadership. I find it fascinating and believe it will be definitive in whether humanity succeeds or fails to halt the environmental crisis over the coming decades. I can bore anyone to death about 90’s progressive house too! What’s been your biggest life lesson? Be kind. Treat people with respect. Manners cost nothing. Karma is real. Sorry that was four! sherringtonassociates.co.uk

Jason Ma Manfo nforrd: The Man Behi Behind The Ma Mask C l a re S t o b a r t c a u g h t u p w i t h the talented performer to talk stand-up, The Masked Singer and his fitness journey

A

As a former pupil of what is now Chorlton High School, you made a name for yourself in a band before you had even finished your GCSEs. What is your favourite childhood tale? I bet you have a few! I joined a band at school with friends Simon and Neil who I’m still best friends with now. For our 40th our wives got together and booked us a recording studio and we put our old songs on an album. I wouldn’t release it, but it’s nice to have as a keepsake. I was quite a good kid really, I wasn’t necessarily academic but I tried really hard. I did all the plays and musicals at school but never got the star part. I was an orphan in Annie and I was third person on the right in Bugsy Malone. I never actually had a character or a name, I was always just happy to be involved. We had one holiday our whole childhood, which was Butlins in Pwllheli. My Mum and Dad said, “Right, we’re going to Butlins for a week” and I couldn’t believe it. We got there in our little chalet and we asked if we could have some money for the fair and the swimming pool and my mum said, “It’s allinclusive, everything is free!” So we went on the rollercoaster, got off and queued up again about 20 times! We literally were able to do whatever we wanted. 22

local lad with award-winning talent, I have the pleasure of sitting down with the one and only Jason Manford. Born and raised in Greater Manchester, Jason was inspired by other local talent such as Peter Kay. Jason found himself drawn to the comedy scene, first performing at Buzz Comedy Club in Chorlton before bursting onto our screens in 2007 as a captain on 8 out of 10 Cats after the role of Jack on Ideal. As a friend and Padel partner, join me in learning more about the legend and man behind the mask.

One morning we got a knock at the chalet door and security asked if three lads were staying here. My dad stood there in his boxers like, “What? Yeah, yeah, my 3 lads are here why?”. There were reports of shoplifting and theft of sweets from the shop. Straight to our defence, he said, “It wouldn’t be my lads, they are good kids”. He shut the door and as he turned around, all 3 of us were sat there with a massive pick ‘n’ mix in shock saying, “You said everything was free!” It went full circle. Years later I was doing a charity gig for the Lord Mayors Fund which was set up to help families from lower incomes get uniforms for their kids and take them on holiday. When I told my Mum she said, “That’s the charity that sent us to Butlins when you were little” and I had randomly ended up helping them. You’ve gone on to become the proud father of six, including twins! I am sure you have your hands full, how do you fit it all in? Sometimes when people look at your schedule and say you’ve got 6 kids, they think I must be doing it all

sat in the corner with your Five Guys if everyone around you is eating a salad. I prefer a class or training with someone as I struggle by myself, so I normally call Dave.

What are your favourite spots in and around Cheshire? CPASE obviously, and Gails in Wilmslow. We go into Knutsford and occasionally Alderley Edge. I don’t go out an awful lot as by the time we are done with the kids, there isn’t time. Sometimes, I have big plans, but I end up brushing my teeth at the same time as the kids and drop off while I’m reading them their stories. Exercise is so important, even with a hectic schedule. Prioritising it is beneficial both physically and mentally. As a valued member of CPASE, what does your typical workout consist of? Sometimes I can be working out 4 or even 5 times a week, whether it’s working out in the gym, Padel or 5-a-side, but other times I can’t get here for ages or the job that I am doing is physical. When I did the Wizard of Oz, that was super physical. During a panto, you’re up dancing and get your 10,000 steps in easily. In the theatre world, you’re surrounded by fit and healthy people. They look after themselves. They have the same respect for their bodies as Olympians and by osmosis, I look after myself too. You can’t be

What is your favourite part of working out? Mine is the endorphin rush. I’m still waiting for that! Maybe I’m not working out hard enough? I’ve got an athlete’s heart though, or so I’ve been told. I have such a low heart rate so it feels like I have to work twice as hard to get it to the right bpm and it recovers really quickly. Whilst I have got an athlete’s heart, what’s surrounding it isn’t quite as fit, which is the problem. I’m not a competitive person, but I do like competing with

by myself! We work as a family. It might not be a traditional one, but you have to work together to get everybody through it emotionally, spiritually and quite literally, physically. My parents help whenever they can, my Uncle Stephen, our cleaner and other family members have become our support network because it is the only way you can do it.

After training, we know you utilise some of the unique facilities at CPASE. Do you find that having regular Cryo sessions helps? I love a Cryo, I even have an ice bath at home now because I love the cold so much. I stay in it for as long as I can manage and then jump straight in the hot tub which is great for circulation.

23

JASON IN WIZARD OF OZ

From The Wizard of Oz and Urban Legends to The Masked Singer and Scarborough, you have such a wide range of talents! As a nation, we love them all, but do you have a favourite? Stand-up is my favourite. I love everything I do and I am really grateful. Stand-up is “me”. But obviously the risk factor is all on you as well, you can’t blame anyone else if it goes wrong!

just a modern problem? If we look through history, are there other examples in time where people’s looks and the way they present themselves were an obsession?”. So then it is a case of going online and speaking to people who are experts at finding these things out. You can go right back to Greek statues, they had massive muscles but always had tiny willies because at the time to be seen to have a big one meant you were a bit thick because all you thought about was sex rather than being someone who was learned. The concept of, “Can you take a couple of inches off that because I have a degree” becomes a funny process. That is where the magic of stand-up comes into its own because you start off with a little idea and then you grow it into something that is funny and interesting. That’s the sweet spot. The real skill is making it look like you’ve done no work at all. There is a lot of effort to make it look effortless.

In preparation for your stand-up shows, do you do any research? They are always absolutely hilarious, but I would love to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes. Yes! Constantly, literally all of the time. Sometimes I end up down a real rabbit warren. It takes me about a year to get a show up and running. I have teenage girls and they are obsessed with what they look like skin care and filters on their phones - yet people presume it’s just a problem from this generation. As a comic, I then go, “Right, are they wrong? Is it not

As we’ve heard from your outstanding performance as the Hedgehog on The Masked Singer, you have an incredible voice. Maybe your collaboration with Shania Twain, Adam Lambert and Beverley Knight on Starstruck should be released? I started doing musicals in 2012, and have been in 7, but The Masked Singer was the turning point where people started to realise I can actually sing. But they don’t know it’s you until the end. I opened ‘Big Night The Musical’ with a song called ‘The Greatest Show’ and people still say, “I didn’t know you could sing!”

How has your fitness journey changed in recent years? I don’t think I went into a gym until 10 years ago. In my teens, twenties and early thirties it never really crossed my mind. Then I started playing indoor tennis and joined David Lloyd. That was it really, other than five-a-side.

myself. The buzz you get when you lift a new weight or you beat a personal best on the treadmill or bike is really helpful when you’re with other people. I think I would give up sooner than I would if someone else is there to spur me on and encourage me.

Stand-up is my favourite. I love everything I do and I am really grateful. Stand-up is “me”. But obviously the risk factor is all on you as well, you can’t blame anyone else if it goes wrong!

I have a problem that I am never “in the moment”. I don’t have the opportunity to feel it, as I am always thinking about what else I have to do. What I have to do next or next week, month or even next year! Even in really special moments, I didn’t process that I sang a song with Shania Twain. And Beverley and Adam, of course. But Shania Twain! Yet at the time I was just thinking, “Right, when I’ve finished this, I have to do that…what are the kids doing?”. You met Shania Twain when she joined you on Starstruck, we have to ask, is she as fit in real life? As you know, we are huge fans and even listen to her when we are playing Padel together. Please tell me you trained with her in the gym. As in sexy? Yes! Absolutely. She is physically fit as well. To do that many shows and come through an illness is amazing. As Adele says, you have to treat your body like an athlete. I didn’t train in the gym with Shania, but I did with Beverley, she is a real fitness fanatic. She’s up every morning, straight on the treadmill and really going for it. It’s intense. I sat next to Shania on the panel, and sometimes people think close up I bet you can see the joins, but Shania is impeccable. She is one of the nicest people. You can be the most beautiful person in the world, but if you’re an arsehole then you’re not beautiful, are you? She is just a good soul. Have you any insider knowledge you can share with us about upcoming projects? I am back in Manchester in The Wizard of Oz this April and I have just finished a big acting job for a new series coming on the TV, but I can’t say what it is yet! It comes out in May and I think it’s going to

And finally, what would be your one piece of advice to anyone hoping to break into the showbiz world? The advice I was given was from many years ago from Peter Kay. I asked him. “How do I get to where you are?”. And he answered, “Well, how much are you working?”. I said, “I do a couple of hours writing in the week and then a bit of travelling. I might have a gig on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday so I’d say about 12 hours, something like that?” His response was, “Well the rest of the country is working 45 hours a week. So why do you think you’re any different because you do something in the creative industry or something that you get paid a decent amount for a smaller amount of time because you’ve got a skill?”. That was a real eye-opener, so I started treating it like a “proper job”. Over the years, I’ve found out that putting the hours and the work in is key. You would be surprised how far being nice gets you. When I go and speak to young people, I explain they need to try their best, be nice to everybody and turn up on time is about 80% of most jobs. It doesn’t change just because you’re doing a more specific or unique job. It’s boring advice but it’s true.

surprise a lot of people. It’s a brilliant storyline and a great character and it’s something that most people won’t have seen me do before. That will be a big talking point.

5 Minutes with ROBERT STEIN, FOUNDER OF FULL SEND

What led you into your industry? As a creative individual, I naturally aspired to pursue a career in graphic design from a young age. Following my university studies in graphic design, I was fortunate to gain practical experience in marketing agencies in both London and Manchester. This diverse practical experience allowed me to not only hone my craft, but instilled in me a thorough understanding of how to apply my skills in graphic design and marketing to the business world.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? At the outset of my entrepreneurial career, I was told the experience of setting up my own agency would be a rollercoaster, and to enjoy the highs and to try and not take the lows personally. This advice has carried me through the first year of my agency, enabling me to remain level-headed in times of both success and setbacks,

and to turn obstacles into opportunities for learning and growth.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt in business? The most significant lesson I’ve learned in business is the paramount importance of effective planning. From my perspective, about 80% of the work lies in the planning phase, while execution constitutes the remaining 20%. Thorough planning to ensure that goals are clearly defined, risks are mitigated, and strategies are well thought out helps to lay the groundwork for success. This upfront investment in planning sets the stage for smoother execution, enabling Full Send to navigate challenges more effectively and capitalise on opportunities with greater precision.

What services do you offer? We are differentiated by a combination of core competencies across Strategy, Digital, Creative, Media and Communications. A typical brand journey with Full Send starts with a marketing audit and strategy development. We then work with clients to launch the strategy through digital experiences such as website design, search engine optimisation, email marketing and social media advertising.

Along the way, we can build and develop the creative look and feel to help brands stand out in saturated markets. Finally, we can combine the strategy and creative to target customers through out-of-home and influencer campaigns and brand experience events.

Has there been a truly pivotal moment for your business? There have been many. From incorporating the business on day one, to my first client win, to the support from family and friends. Every day there is something, whether it be big or small, that is pivotal to the business moving forward and growing.

What are your plans for 2024 and beyond? Full Send has big plans for 2024 and beyond. We’ve just relaunched the agency as a ‘next-generation brand management agency’. To do this we’ve expanded using a holistic approach so we can offer our clients everything they could possibly need under one roof. Whether it’s strategy, digital, creative, media or comms, partnering with Full Send will keep brands one step ahead, in an ever-changing and developing world. fullsend.agency

New Lunch Specials at Ha wksmoor Liver pool

If Hawksmoor has shown anything over the years, it is that inspiration can come from anywhere and the latest iteration of the lunch menu is no different, drawing on 30s Geneva, the tableside trolleys of the 1960s, Dickens’ England, and a Californian restaurant chain founder immortalised by the Beastie Boys.

The Six New Dishes Flatiron Steak, Café de Paris makes its Hawksmoor debut. Charcoal-grilled flatiron, served in the style of the hottest restaurant in 1930s Geneva: Café de Paris - served with beef dripping fries and a salad of watercress, shaved radishes and cornichons in a mustard dressing.

Food & Drink news WORDS: CRAIG HOUGH

Shortrib au poivre: Steak au poivre wasn’t born in the 1960s, but that was its spiritual heyday. Back then, it was often flamed tableside by a tuxedoed waiter. Hawksmoor has swapped steak for shortrib, slow-cooked for 10 hours until meltingly tender, brushed in mustard, dipped in cracked pepper and coated in peppercorn sauce and served with buttery mash or our beef-dripping fries. Beefsteak pudding: ‘In the whole catalogue of cookery, there is nothing I should like so much as a beef-steak pudding!’, exclaims a character in Charles Dickens’s Martin Chuzzlewit. It might even have helped its cook, Ruth Pinch, land a husband. Hawksmoor has swapped steak for braised short rib and added red wine and Somerset Cider Brandy before mixing with winter vegetables and steaming in a traditional suet pastry crust. Tunworth Royale patty melt: the lovechild of two of the best things in the food world: a burger and a toasted cheese sandwich. Invented by William Wallace ‘Tiny’ Naylor (for any hip-hop nerds, he’s on the cover of the Beastie Boy’s 1994 album, Ill Communication) in 1950s LA. Hawksmoor makes theirs with their famous burger patty, one of their favourite cheeses, rich, complex, unctuous Tunworth, and mozzarella for maximum string factor - all between slices of Texas Toast.

SPOTLIGHT ON... M U S U , M A N C H E S T E R

WORDS: MICHAEL GATES

S

ince opening its doors in late 2022, MUSU has become a firm favourite on the Manchester scene. Occupying the former Randall & Aubin site on Bridge Street, MUSU underwent a multimillion-pound refit ahead of its launch. The décor is sleek, elegant, and contemporary, the walls adorned with vibrant Japanese artwork and state-of-the-art cinematic video screens. The large open kitchen dominates the length of the restaurant, with a stylish bar at one end and a private dining area at the other. At the helm is Chef Patron Mike Shaw, whose illustrious career highlights include Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisona and Gordon Ramsey’s Aubergine, now honing his passion for Japanese cuisine. After being greeted with a warm welcome, we were led to our table through the opulent bar and cocktail lounge, the place was bustling with activity. Once seated, I opted for the Edo Elixir, a twist on the traditional Old Fashioned which was well balanced and packed a punch. The cocktail menu is very alluring, each drink with its own unique story paying homage to the timeliness traditions and modern flair of Japan. If cocktails are not your thing, you will also find an extensive wine and sake menu, a selection of Japanese beer and a large selection of Japanese whiskies, renowned for their exceptional craftmanship and distinctive character. Celebrating Japanese culture and artistry,

MUSU offers guests three distinct options to choose from. First is The Land of the Rising Sun Tasting Menu, a seasonal tasting menu that is available in 5, 8 or 12 courses with an optional wine pairing. You are invited to explore Japanese cuisine through four distinct cooking styles Edomae, Izakaya, Teppan and Kaiseki. Secondly, you can choose to elevate your dining experience with the Omakase offering, guided by the skilled hands of Chef Andre Aguiar. With a dedicated Chef’s Table only available to 6 guests per service, you’ll be treated to an exclusive sushi journey, with each piece meticulously crafted just for you. Finally, you can look to savour the exquisite flavours of Edomae-style sushi, a testament to the time-honoured techniques that define Japanese cuisine. The sushi menu offers a selection of masterfully prepared sushi, highlighting the finest ingredients and meticulous rice preparation. To fully immerse ourselves in the Japanese culinary journey, we decided on the 12-course tasting menu, with the wine pairing. We were expertly guided through each course by

our amazing waiter Jasui and the extremely knowledgeable sommelier, Ivan. The presentation of each course was visually stunning and equally the flavours and textures were exceptional. Many of the courses were standouts, but my personal favourite was the wagyu beef, served two ways with wasabi and black truffle. A close second was the black cod with cauliflower, umami broth and Oscietra caviar. Accompanying the dishes was a selection of 6 beautifully paired wines, with the standout for me being the Danbury Ridge Chardonnay from Essex, which was zesty, fresh, and vibrant. For someone who is not a complete sushi lover, I was both impressed and blown away by the menu and experience. The evening flowed at a steady pace and lasted around 3 hours. There are several dining options to suit your taste and budget, but I’d highly recommend the 12 courses. You should also check out the website for details on the latest events and any upcoming live tuna cutting experiences, showcasing the art of bluefin tuna preparation. You can also sign up to the MUSU rewards programme to receive a host of benefits, currently offering members a 30% discount off your food bill in March. musumcr.com 57

R OY OYA AL GOU GO U RME RMET T G ETA ETAW W AY Kathryn Otto travels to Adeje to meet Fernando Turnes, General Manager at Royal Hideaway Corales Resort Can you share some of the history of the hotel? The hotel opened in February 2018 and was built from scratch. The architect, Leonardo Omar, is from Tenerife and the striking design was inspired by marine corals and the sea. The structure of the hotel reflects the form of a wave and the most impressive space is the lobby of Royal Hideaway Corales Suites, which resembles an underwater cave. It took 9 months to construct and bring the concept to life.

62

What are the benefits of your location? Our hotel is oceanfront and every room boasts sea views as well as vistas of the neighbouring island, La Gomera. The hotel is just a few minutes away from the nearest beach, and right next to the fishing village of La Caleta, which is full of charm and bustles with locals who sit overlooking the sea in its quaint restaurants and bars. How would you describe the hotel’s dining experience? We like to consider the hotel a dining destination. There are five a la carte restaurants at the hotel, two of which are Michelin-starred: San Hô with one and El Rincón de Juan Carlos with two. For us, gastronomy is key to the experience and our team works with local suppliers to source fresh and high-quality ingredients which are then incorporated into dishes in all manner of creative ways across the different outlets. We are very proud of our culinary offering and the work our team does and we feel it really sets us apart from other hotels on the island.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

What attracts locals to your venue? All restaurants are open to visitors as well as guests, and they have become very popular among locals – particularly El Rincon de Juan Carlos, although be sure to book in advance so you don’t miss out! How do you cater to families and group bookings? Our resort has two separate concepts and buildings; one for all ages and the other for adults only (+16). On the family friendly side (Corales Suites) we have a kids club and full entertainment programme to keep the little ones busy, and we host movie nights so adults can enjoy a sophisticated dinner. Rooms were also designed with family in mind – one and two-bedroom suites, and a three bedroom penthouse, come complete with a kitchenette, spacious living area, and outdoor terrace. Some of the apartments also feature a private pool. Beyond fitness and sports, guests can enjoy local wine and cheese tasting and cocktail masterclasses within the hotel. Our expert team can also tailor activities to group bookings.

63

If a couple were looking for a romantic stay – what itinerary would you suggest? Our sea view Junior suites at Corales Beach are perfect for couple stays, and the rooms on the 5th floor even have hot tubs on the terrace. On the rooftop terrace couples can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets with Canarian-inspired cocktails from Maresía Atlantic Bar. Tenerife as an island also has some beautiful walks, which could be nice for active couples. In your time at the hotel, how have things evolved? We have evolved and built a reputation as a gastronomic hub on the island which I am very proud of. This has been recognised by the many awards and accolades, not only in the food world but across the design world and for service too. A highlight for me was San Hô being awarded a Michelin Star last year and a well-deserved second star for El Rincón de Juan Carlos. Do you have any exciting upcoming events scheduled? In May we will host the 10th edition of “Inspirational Chef Program”. It is a special event we organize where we invite a renowned or Michelin-awarded chef to the hotel to collaborate with our chefs. They are taken to meet the local producers we work with and get inspired by the island and its produce. Then the chef prepares a special dinner alongside the hotel chefs, which is attended by guests and locals. Celebrating the island and the hotel through culinary collaboration! barcelo.com

T IMELESS M EM EMO O RIES AWAIT Kathryn Otto travels to Portugal to

meet Hugo Gonçalves, General Manager at Tivoli Marina Vilamoura Algarve Resort Can you share some of the history of the hotel? Situated overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and next to Vilamoura Marina, Tivoli Marina Vilamoura is a luxury hotel in the Algarve, Portugal. Last year, the same year that Tivoli Hotels & Resorts celebrated its 90th Anniversary, we were excited to unveil a contemporary and sophisticated new look. The hotel closed for four months reopening in April with refurbished guest rooms, a redesigned Argo Cocktail Bar and newly landscaped gardens with a redesigned pool.

What are the benefits of your location? We have a fantastic location, surrounded by water, with the Marina on one side and the ocean on the other. Vilamoura is an upscale destination where guests can enjoy outdoor activities such as golf and tennis or boat tours to Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. We also have shops, restaurants and bars, and the traditional cultural town Loulé is not far away. The Algarve also has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

67

How would you describe the hotel’s dining experience? Excellent - there’s so much for guests to choose from. We have Pepper’s Steakhouse that overlooks the Marina and serves meat and seafood. Purobeach restaurant is situated on the beach with an international menu and some of the best fresh fish in Portugal. Next to the pool, is Oregano Restaurant serving an Italian menu and fresh salads and the D’Azur Pool Bar, where guests can enjoy cocktails and light dishes including lobster hotdog. The Argo Cocktail Bar in November won the Best Hotel Bar in Portugal and Spain in the Condé Nast Traveler’s Hotel & Mantel Awards. And we can’t forget our Glee Boutique Café, where you will find delicious French pastries. What attracts locals to your venue? Great food served in a sophisticated atmosphere in all our restaurants and the quality of our Tivoli Spa. Tivoli Spa Marina Vilamoura offers 2,400 square meters exclusively dedicated to relaxation, rejuvenation and reconnection. The Spa features 11 treatment rooms, sauna, steam room, indoor swimming pool and vitality pool. Guests can enjoy facials, figure shaping, slimming and exfoliating treatments using the award-winning Spa product brand - Natura Bissé combined with Tivoli Spa treatments and rejuvenating organically sourced local products.

68

How do you cater to families and group bookings? Tivoli Marina Vilamoua is very kids friendly. As well as a Kids Club, we feature dedicated Family Rooms that have lots of space and even a popcorn machine and colouring books in them. Outside, the pool was redesigned last year to be 1.5m depth which has a special shallower family section where children can play with their parents in safety. If a couple were looking for a romantic stay – what itinerary would you suggest? I would suggest staying in the Vilamoura Suite and enjoying a couples massage in our Tivoli Spa. To finish the day couples could have a romantic meal on the balcony of the Vilamoura Suite, an ideal spot to watch the sunset. Do you have any exciting upcoming events scheduled? In June we will have the Purobeach Opening Party, in August a Summer Party and in December, an outstanding New Year´s Eve Dinner and Party.

MY EXPERIENCE

The best way I can describe Tivoli Marina Hotel is the diamond at the top of the Vilamoura crown. It dominates a prime position overlooking the yacht-filled harbour and the array of restaurants, bars, boutique shops, and the beach. We have travelled to many luxury hotels and this building is one of the most impressive we’ve seen. Every element of this hotel has been well thought out, the use of glass in the reception area and throughout the hotel allows the light to flood in and makes the most of the spectacular views of the ocean on one side and the harbour on the other. Our luxury suite also had floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors allowing the outside to flow in. You really can just arrive and relax, all the team are more than happy to help you in any way, from the moment you arrive to when you depart. They offer many experiences to enhance your stay including champagne afternoon tea in the Glee Boutique Café. Argo Cocktail Bar and Peppers Steakhouse as well as their luxury spa. Tivoli Marina Vilamoura resort really has it all, with a short flight time you can visit for a weekend however there is enough on offer for you to enjoy a long relaxing holiday. We have recommended this hotel to many friends and family since visiting and will continue to do so. We can’t wait to go back and also to visit other Tivoli hotels, if they are anything like this one we will be in for a treat! Thank you team Tivoli. tivolihotels.com

Drive Avant Gar ard de

The Audi RS6 Avant has gained something of a reputation over the years. Fast, practical and luxurious, it ticks lots of boxes for customers, but it has become more than the sum of its parts. It isn’t quite on the level of a Land Rover Defender or even an Audi Quattro in terms of icon status, but when it comes to fast estates, this is the one that comes to mind. And now there’s a new, range-topping model called the GT. Of the 660 set to be built, just 60 will come to the UK and all will offer a wide, aggressive front design, a bespoke colour scheme and 22-inch alloy wheels, not to mention aerodynamic and suspension upgrades. Oh, and there’s a 621bhp V8 under the bonnet. Audi RS6 Avant GT, audi.co.uk

DRIVE LIGHTING THE WAY

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

Audi’s upgrades to the popular Q7 SUV may be subtle, but this top-selling luxury SUV is set to remain among the leaders in its class.

I

f you want a vacuum cleaner, you buy a Dyson. If you want a new mobile, you buy an iPhone. And if you want a luxurious family SUV with seven seats, you buy an Audi Q7. For years, these have been the safe bets of the consumer world, the things that won’t let you down or leave you feeling disappointed. But while new Dysons and iPhones arrive every 15 minutes, new Audi Q7s are as regular as your local rural train service. So the arrival of a revamped Q7 should perhaps be filed as ‘important’ rather than ‘exciting’, but it’s a big moment nonetheless. This time, Audi’s updates are fairly subtle – owners of the current car might indulge in a game of spot the difference – but we’re talking about a car that wasn’t broken. Instead, minor improvements are the name of the game, and that’s exactly what Audi has done, adding value without changing a successful recipe.

That means you get a slightly different front grille, a choice of new colours and new headlights, which use clever technology to avoid dazzling other drivers and offer owners a choice of different light ‘signatures’. Opt for the range-topping Vorsprung model and you get laser technology, too, giving much greater range. Otherwise, changes are limited to the digital instrument display, which gets some new features, some new alloy wheel designs and some fresh software for the infotainment system. But all these things are exactly what Q7 customers want and expect, so we expect to see the Q7 remain among the most popular luxury SUVs on the market. Audi Q7, from £66,605, audi.co.uk 72

SPACE RANGER Hot on the heels of the cool new BMW 5 Series is the new 5 Series Touring. Essentially an estate version of the popular saloon, it’ll come to the UK in May, with electric ‘i5’ versions leading the charge. With more cabin and boot space than before, as well as a choice of electric and hybrid powertrains, it’s set to be one of the sportiest and most efficient estates yet. And for those who prefer high-performance petrol power, an M5 Touring model is expected next year, although BMW hasn’t officially confirmed as much. For the time being, customers can choose between the 335bhp electric eDrive40 option with a 348-mile range or the 593bhp all-wheel-drive M60 xDrive with a 314-mile range, while a 295bhp 530e plug-in hybrid is expected in the summer. BMW i5 Touring, from £69,040, bmw.co.uk

END OF THE LINE If the Jaguar F-Type had nine lives, it seems this is its last. Destined to go out of production later this year, the sleek coupe and convertible models represent Jaguar’s last petrol-powered sports cars. Having already announced the 75th anniversary model last year, Jaguar has now revealed yet another final edition – the ZP Edition – designed to celebrate the brand’s racing heritage. Available in both hard- and soft-top guises, the 150 ZP Edition models get either Oulton Blue or Crystal Grey paint, plus unique interiors, hand-painted racing ‘roundels’ on the sides and ZP Edition branding. Under the bonnet, meanwhile, is Jaguar’s 567bhp V8 supercharged petrol engine, which sends its power to all four wheels. Getting from 0-62mph takes 3.5 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 186mph. Jaguar F-Type ZP Edition, £TBC, jaguar.com

Like every other car maker, McLaren is being pushed towards hybrid and electric power, but as James Fossdyke has been discovering, that doesn’t have to be a bad thing

O

ver the past decade or so, McLaren has completely reinvented its image. Just like Dion Dublin started simply as a football star and pundit, then added daytime television to his repertoire, McLaren shifted from being one of the biggest Formula 1 teams on the planet to being one of the biggest names in supercar manufacturing. And while it’s true that the McLaren F1 of 1990 was the brand’s first road car, it wasn’t until 2011 that the snappily named MP4-12C became the first in a long line of supercars for the road. But the move into mainstream manufacturing, or at least minor-league production, has put McLaren under the watchful gaze of governments, media and consumers, all of whom are clamouring for the hybrid technology used in Formula 1 – and variations thereof – to be implemented in road cars. In fairness, McLaren was quick on the uptake, having built the limitededition P1 hybrid hypercar in 2013, but it has taken until now for the brand to bring out a ‘full-production’ hybrid supercar. It’s called the Artura, and it’s immediately plain to see that this is a McLaren. Clean, aerodynamic styling is complemented by McLaren’s boomerang headlights and narrow tail lights, not to mention the rear grille that looks like something from an alien spaceship. As a result, and without resorting to fins and wings, McLaren has built a car that looks every inch a supercar – particularly in one of the brighter colours. In McLaren’s world, this is one of the smaller cars it makes, sitting between the ‘entry-level’ GTS model and the new 750S in McLaren’s new-look line-up. For those uninitiated in the McLaren way of doing things, this is essentially a hybrid rival for the Ferrari 296 GTB, the Lamborghini Huracan and the Maserati MC20. That means it’s up against some pretty spectacular opposition – we’d happily put any of those three cars in our garage without any hesitation – so it has to do more than just offer a clever hybrid system. It has to be one of the best in the business. To help it achieve that, McLaren has given it a very clever plug-in hybrid system, which essentially means you can use it as an electric car. The car can be plugged in like a Tesla, then charged and used in near-silence, with an official range of up to 19 miles. In truth, you’ll be doing well to manage 15 miles on a charge. If you so wish, you can drive to the shops, fill up the Artura’s pretty pitiful 150-litre boot with bags for life,

74

and recharge when you get home. Do that and that alone, and your McLaren will never use a drop of petrol, but you’ll be missing out on the point of driving a near-£200,000 supercar. Instead, it’s much better to use the spectacular 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that works with the electric motor to provide a massive 671bhp, all of which heads to the massive rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. While that sounds impressive in isolation, bear in mind that the Artura’s nearest rival the Ferrari 296 GTB hybrid, offers 819bhp from its V6 plug-in hybrid system, so those who love to play Top Trumps in their local might prefer the Ferrari. But that isn’t the whole story, because despite its battery, electric motor and petrol engine, the Artura is very, very light. In fact, it weighs less than a BMW 3 Series, and that means 671bhp is enough to get from a standstill to 62mph in three seconds flat. And flat out, it’ll do 205mph. Suddenly, the Artura looks much more comparable with the Ferrari, which offers very similar performance despite its vast power advantage. And the news gets even better for the Artura when you take it out on the road. The car’s behaviour is largely controlled through a host of settings, so there’s an electric mode for driving around using the electric motor as much as possible, but that’s best avoided because it feels a bit sluggish and the petrol engine sometimes cuts in at inopportune moments, leaving you with the impression of a badly rehearsed amateur dramatics show. There’s a Track mode, too, but that’s a bit much unless you’re going on a race circuit. It holds onto gears for too long, and generally makes a racket. Instead, Sport mode is the sweet spot, using both the motor and engine at the same time to provide rapid responses and immense power. Because the electric motor fills in during gearchanges and the like, Sport mode makes the Artura a weapon on the road, with unhinged ability to overtake slow-moving traffic. Similarly, there’s a choice of three modes for the chassis – Comfort, Sport and Track – and the story is similar. Track mode is just too savage for road use, seeming to magnify the lumps and bumps and feed them directly into your backside, but the other two settings are great. When you’re just cruising along, Comfort mode is wonderfully smooth, ironing out the imperfections with the aplomb of a luxury saloon, rather than a supercar. That McLaren has built something this fast and this comfortable is nothing

short of miraculous. But Sport mode is better for more exciting roads, offering much sharper control of the car’s body without sacrificing too much comfort. It does take some of the softness away, of course, but it trades that for lightning-sharp reactions to the steering wheel, which feels spectacular no matter which mode you use. Admittedly, the Artura never feels quite as nimble as a Ferrari 296 GTB, but it does win out in one area in particular: the brakes. McLaren has fitted lightweight carbon-ceramic brake discs to the Artura, and their immense power means the car can stop from 62mph in just 31 metres. And there’s nothing dramatic about using that stopping power, because the Artura stays stable and solid as the numbers seem to fall away from the digital display in front of the driver. The way it stops is truly remarkable. As is the car’s interior. It’s minimalist, yes, and there’s basically a touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and very little else. The touchscreen isn’t the greatest, it’s true, but for a small car manufacturer’s effort, it isn’t that bad, and the digital instrument display is crystal clear. You

76

get the feeling the tech is not there for the sake of it, and McLaren wants you to concentrate on driving. You don’t even get buttons on the steering wheel, with McLaren preferring a selection of levers behind the wheel for controlling functions such as the hybrid system, cruise control and lights. It takes a bit of time to get your head around. But while all that is sinking in, it only takes a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into the McLaren’s cabin. It may not be as fussy or as complex as that of a Ferrari, but it’s really well made, with lots of tactile materials and neatly fitted panels. The engineering on show is spectacular. But despite that, when all is said and done, the Ferrari 296 GTB still has the edge over the Artura for a multitude of reasons. Greater practicality, a prettier body and slightly greater agility all play their part, but the key factor is the aura that surrounds a Ferrari. There’s no real reason for it – McLaren and Ferrari have gone toe-to-toe in motorsport for decades, so their history isn’t all that different – but the Ferrari just feels that fraction more special. However, if you’ve already ‘done’ the whole Ferrari thing and you’re a bit bored of the Prancing Horse, the Artura is a stellar alternative. Biblically fast, beautifully engineered and great fun to drive, the McLaren is as worthy a rival as the Ferrari will face, and compliments don’t come much greater than that.

No home would be complete without windows but, with more architects opting to embrace the structural qualities of glass in their designs, glazing is being placed firmly at the heart of the modern home building. The experts at Clear Living tell us more

T

hroughout time, glass has protected us, adorned us, but, until relatively recently, it wasn’t considered for its structural properties. Always, glass sat firmly in the domain of cladding or curtain wall, whereas structure was all about steel. Now, though, the design world has woken up to the qualities of glass as a structural material, extending the palette of the architect and enhancing builds in ways never before seen. So what is structural glazing? In short, it’s where glass becomes an intrinsic part of the structure, where load-bearing capabilities are as, if not more, important than its aesthetic appeal. ‘Structural glazing allows us to do fantastic things with glass’ explains Kristian Hansen of Clear Living. ‘In traditional glazing, it’s the frame which provides the strength, be it in oak, timber or aluminium. But by utilising the structural qualities of the glass as a load-bearing medium, we can do away with frames and edges to create these aesthetically amazing living spaces of

seamless glass which connect directly with the building, becoming an intrinsic part of the design.’ ‘Clients often come to us wanting to achieve the ‘inside outside’ look for their home’. In the 1920s, a group of iconic architects, Ludwig Mies der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Richard Neutra laid the foundations for a new, revolutionary spatial concept. They opened up the building envelope and redefined the notion of spatial boundaries in architecture. The traditional solid wall dividing inside and outside was superseded by transparent assemblies and the ‘free flowing space’ was born. Clear Living is based here in Cheshire and is a market leader in the design, supply and installation of structural and frameless glass to residential and commercial clients. ‘We are fortunate to have worked on some truly impressive projects here in Cheshire and love to help clients achieve what others say can’t be done’. Visually light yet structurally strong, glass has long been favoured by architects as a means of opening up a building to its environment while still protecting it from the elements. Perfectly suited to the spectacular views of the Cheshire Countryside or to create that wow factor for a more urban property. Clear Living specialises in only the

highest rated glazing systems. Their in-house specialist glazing engineers are able to ensure their glazing designs and installations meet the requirements of even the most challenging buildings. Sky-Frame represents the ultimate in glazing innovation, design and technology. Featuring a diverse variety of beautiful sliding doors, this range is the result of years of glazing research, knowledge and experience. Sky-Frame sliding doors feature narrow sightlines as low as 20mm, no framework at the edges, minimalist handles and locks with options for sloped and curved panels as well as automation. The sliding doors open up any living space with a flush transition allowing inside and outside to merge seamlessly into one another.

ontemporary art has never been so accessible to buy and collect. Displaying art is not only a way to curate a home that is unique to you, it’s a rewarding creative pursuit and the art you select can hugely influence an artist’s career. We’ve asked gallerist and artist, Nan Collantine of contemporary gallery, Mura Ma to give us her top tips on how to choose artwork for your home and how collecting is an art in itself.

Contemporary art often pushes boundaries and challenges traditional norms. Be open-minded and willing to explore new and innovative artistic expressions. Your collection can be a reflection of your openness to different perspectives and ideas.

Think about space

Visiting art galleries, large museum shows in different cities, art fairs as well as small independent and artist-run galleries, and of course, online is a great way to explore different art styles, mediums, and genres to identify what resonates with you. Take photographs and start to build a library of what you like.

Take into account the size and layout of the space where you plan to display the artwork. Sometimes a space can really handle something larger than you think. Feel free to break the rules and make the artwork the centrepiece of the room. Small works often get lost on large walls, think about a large piece to fill the space or create a salon hang of smaller works of different sizes. A downstairs loo for example is a great place to have fun with artwork.

Identify your style and use art to break your own rules

Mix Mediums, Styles and Scale

Take note of existing creative expression in your home, how you decorate and arrange furniture and objects, your colour schemes, use of pattern or textures, the pictures you already have on your walls, as well as the period of your home and the style of furniture you have. Is it formal or relaxed? Do you like minimal design or are you a maximalist? Start by taking photographs of your living room and try to see it objectively. All the clues to your style are already there. Having said that, a piece of art is not necessarily about matching an existing interior, it could be a way to disrupt a harmonious scheme and provide a pop of colour, energy and excitement or make a challenging statement. Art should never be boring, and I personally would never buy art to match my sofa.

Don’t be afraid to mix different art forms and styles. Combining paintings, sculptures, textiles, photographs, and other mediums can create a dynamic and eclectic atmosphere in your home. Consider putting a large picture above a console table with a piece of sculpture or objects to create a focal point. Scale is really important and should be considered in proportion to the room and the furniture, but again break rules if you think it works.

The art of collecting

Good art is not created for a market. Find artists who are attempting to express their ideas and have an art practice that is developing, rather than sitting with a style that sells. If you want to be a collector then it’s important to cultivate your own taste and understanding of contemporary art and to learn about emerging artists and their work. Authenticity is not hard to spot and art should not look slick. Learn about contemporary artists and their work by attending gallery openings, art fairs and exhibitions to discover emerging talent. Follow the artists, they often know the ones to watch. Artists are usually the first to acquire work from an artist they admire. My own art collection started by swapping work with artist friends and I have developed an eye for the artists that I think are making great work.

Where to buy Context is important and how and where an artist shows their work, or is invited to show their work, matters. You can get a sense of an artist’s work if they have a solo exhibition in a gallery or public institution and is an indicator that this is an artist to watch. Some artists self-organise and collaborate with artists as collectives to show work in hired spaces and this can also be a great way to find contemporary artworks If an artist is represented by a reputable gallery, then there is an extra level of credibility to the work. As a gallerist I am investing in the artists I am showing and representing. Most galleries will also offer an at home consultancy collector service. Ask them if they are a member of Own Art, which is an Arts Council-backed scheme that offers interest free credit to help people to buy art from living artists. It is also an assurance that the gallery has gone through a review process to become part of the scheme. If you want to build a relationship with a gallery, you can often get first pick from new collections before exhibitions open to the public. Good art galleries hold talks and receptions where you can meet and hear from the artist and the curator and engage in the ideas behind the work. Understanding the artist’s backstory creates a personal connection to the work and enhances the significance of the piece. Group exhibitions and open call exhibitions, such as the Manchester Open, can offer an introduction to different artists, including people who might not identify as a professional artist, and can offer a variety of price points – here the rule is if you love it – buy it. You can also buy direct from the artists, this potentially offers a lower price point and ideal for collecting works for a few hundred pounds. Keep an eye out for artists open studios when you can go and buy work they are clearing out of their studio. There is also the Artists Support Pledge which is a great way to buy art direct online for less than £220 using the hashtag #artistsupportpledge.

GHISLAINE HOWARD

While it’s essential to choose art that you love, it’s also worth considering the potential investment value. Research the artist’s reputation, career trajectory and market demand. But always prioritise personal enjoyment over potential financial gain. Create a budget for your art collection to guide your choices. This will help you narrow down options and prevent overspending. Keep in mind that there is great art available at various price points.

ROSCOE RUTTER

Should I buy prints? I’m not a fan of prints, because for a little more or sometimes even less, you can pick up an affordable original piece such as works on paper, for around £200 by an emerging artist. Buying an original work beats a print hands down in terms of presence. That’s why thousands of people still go to see art in museums, because reproductions don’t carry the same weight of material or feeling of an original, and if you are looking at it and living with it every day, it really makes a difference. There is also a chance that an original might increase in value. An original should always come with a certificate of authenticity.

Should I commission an artwork? This is tricky as an artist, it’s not always easy to produce a piece of work on demand and most artists I know don’t like to do it. If you like an artist’s work then buy what they’ve already made, put your name down for a work from their next collection, or if they are with a gallery there may be a back catalogue and of course there is the secondary market, which means someone has collected their work previously and wants to sell it on. Leave artists to make the work they want to make.

Trust the process If you are not already collecting art, your first piece might lead to another, and there is a growing number of emerging collectors who are choosing to create and curate their own wonderful art collection. Selecting contemporary art is a creative journey, and there are no strict rules. My advice is to learn as you go, trust your instinct and jump right in. Mura Ma is an independent gallery in Marple dedicated to showcasing emerging artists for anyone interested in buying art for their home or creating an art collection. murama.co.uk

5 Reasons You Need to

Pack a Bag and Head to the Lakes this Spring/Summer Less than two hours from Cheshire you can be transported to a whole other world of showstopping views, charming villages and mountains to master in The Lake District. That’s why leading independent holiday operator, Pure Leisure Group, has three of its 19 UK holiday parks located there and also why they are perfectly placed to share five reasons why taking a trip is an absolute must… #1 - National Landscapes & World Heritage Status The Lake District has National Landscapes in abundance. Previously known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Cumbria alone has three National Landscapes; Arnside & Silverdale and Solway Coast National Landscape, all recognised for their outstanding beauty, wildlife and history. To add to that, the Lake District is recognised internationally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning it is an area of outstanding universal value.

#2 - Walks for all Weathers and all Walkers There is no real way of quantifying it but there are 1000s of walking routes throughout the Lake District National Park that offer variety in; terrain, scenery, nature and altitude. From accessible family walks like Scout Scar on the outskirts of Kendal - which is a pushchair-friendly route - to Scafell Pike, the region’s highest peak and a popular challenge for keen hikers. You simply can’t get bored and there is something for all ages, abilities and weathers to get you enjoying the great outdoors!

#3 - A Sky Full of Stars Chances are you have often thought about how lovely it would be to star gaze but have never actually got around to it. Well, the Lakes are the perfect place to partake in some extraordinary star gazing with a selection of ‘dark skies’ destinations that provide optimal star gazing locations. According to visitlakedistrict.com, Cumbria has some of the

darkest skies in the whole of the UK thanks to its ‘dramatic valleys, imposing mountains and rugged coastline’. On some nights you can see thousands of stars above.

#4 - Wildlife Wonderland If you’re an animal lover, or you have children and want to show them wildlife in its natural habitat, then where better than the Lakes. Labelled ‘paradise’ for its inhabitants, the Lake District is home to a vast array of wildlife from birds to squirrels, red deer and even otters. Having such a rich knowledge and wildlife-friendly culture, makes it an amazing environment for young and old minds alike.

#5 - Bucket List Stuff The Lake District is absolutely bursting with memories just waiting to be made. From boat rides across Lake Windermere to The World of Beatrix Potter and the famous Lakes Three Peak Challenge – Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. Not to mention the star gazing, water sports and nature watching. Pure Leisure Group has parks, with holiday and home ownership options available in Carnforth, Cumbria, Ulverston and Kendal - visit pure-leisure.co.uk to find out more. This jewel in the crown, South Lakeland Leisure Village is set amongst rolling countryside on the Lake District border with areas of outstanding natural beauty on its doorstep. Each lodge at the park is like a home-from-home with top-quality furnishings and kitchen space that exude quality and style, many of which boast spectacular views over the lake or surrounding countryside – the most peaceful retreat perfect for couples and families alike. With an onsite restaurant, pool, gym and beauty salon, you won’t wish for anything else during your stay! pure-leisure.co.uk
