Mindfully crafted, our transformative retreat formula comprises essential elements designed to elevate the mind, body, and spirit seamlessly:

a vital role in each retreat. This ensures each guest feels centred within themselves and the stunning surroundings. Retreat founder and leader Laura Bunting comments, “Each day our retreat offers a harmonious blend of adventure and relaxation. Kenya is a special place where you can absorb the natural world’s splendour and reinvigorate the human soul. Our retreats are a unique seamless blend of wellness and wilderness. No need to be an avid yogi to get the full benefits; we welcome everyone to come as they are for an unforgettable adventure. “No longer confined to the stereotype of poolside lounging, stressful itinerary planning and excess consumption of food and alcohol, people now seek a more holistic, immersive approach to travel. There’s an increased desire to return home rejuvenated, steering away from exhaustion and hangovers. On our retreats, we have hosted individuals from all walks of life—families, couples, and solo travellers—either in group retreats or for

• Daily Movement: Starting each day with gentle yet energising movement through vinyasa yoga. • Meditation: 30 minutes of guided meditation through Yoga Nidra invites serenity as we unwind into the early evening after a day of adventure. • Nutrient-rich Foods: Our retreat culinary experience nourishes our guests from within. No restrictions, just delicious, whole foods that are good for the body and soul.

• Massage: Physical touch from a skilled and trained masseuse helps to alleviate tension accumulated from daily mental and physical stresses. Post massage, there is often a considerable release you didn’t realise you needed. • Nature: The subtle yet potent influence of the natural environment is a fundamental element of rejuvenation and often encourages guests to immerse themselves in nature when they return home. • Solitude and Personal Immersion: Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, alone time can benefit your mental well-being. A moment to recharge is a vital component of our retreats.

The transformative journey of these retreats is evident in the all-encompassing improvement in our guest’s wellbeing. Witnessing the gradual alleviation of stress as each day goes by is incredible. Then, reconnecting with guests after the retreat fills me with immense joy as I learn about their continued well-being and the positive transformations they have embraced from these experiences.” wildlifeandyoga.com

Beginning a new exercise regime can be a daunting prospect, however, it can be achieved safely and successfully. • Have a plan: try to be clear about what you want to achieve and by when. Plan backwards so that you can make gradual increases in distance each week. Research suggests that increases over 2 weeks of more than 30% put runners at greater risk of lower limb injuries. • Recover well: your body needs some love. Give it what it wants by making sure you sleep ideally 8 hours plus, hydrate consistently well so your pee is always clear and eat a colourful well-balanced diet to give you appropriate energy for growth and repair. • Be patient: training is a process of building tolerance and allowing your body to adapt to become both stronger and fitter. We live in an "Amazon Prime" type world of immediacy, but training doesn’t happen overnight. • Have a good pair of trainers. Probably the most important thing is that they are comfy and appropriately compliment your foot type. Some people require more control and support than others. Don't expect to succeed using fashion trainers as your main set of wheels. • Cool down. The last thing we ever want to do after a workout is any kind of cool down but consider it a process where you are ironing out the creases ready for the next session in a day or two. Basic stretches will help as will a foam roller which should be a compulsory piece of kit used after each workout..it’s worth the pain! • Enjoy it! Whatever your goal may be (charity, fitness, life goals, weight loss, PB's etc), remember why you are doing it and try to embrace and enjoy it - you will always get the best version of you when this is the case.

Consultant Dermatologist Dr Aiza Jamil shares her advice on looking after your body’s frontline defence against harmful toxins and environmental stressors Why is a strong skin barrier important for healthy skin? Skin barrier protects the skin from external environmental agents and free radicals which can damage the skin. Maintaining a strong skin barrier will help prevent this damage and any skin conditions that can happen when the skin barrier is compromised.

What are the signs of a compromised skin barrier? When the skin barrier is compromised, it becomes prone to redness, irritation, sensitivity, increased dryness and flaky skin, breakouts and a reduced ability to retain moisture. This can lead to the development of conditions like eczema, acne and fungal skin infections.

Why are skin barrier issues on the rise? There has been an increased trend of using potentially irritating agents such as retinoids, and exfoliating acids, as well as harsh physical exfoliators like grainy scrubs. Other common culprits are some natural or synthetic fragrances as well as drying alcohols, especially on sensitive skin. Certain dermatological procedures

like HydraFacial, chemical peels, micro-needling and dermabrasion are tried by many people without appropriate knowledge of any harmful effects it can cause to their skin. It can lead to disruptions to the skin barrier which increases the likelihood of irritants, pathogens, and allergens provoking inflammatory responses. We have recently seen an increase in such cases.

There’s an idea that when it comes to skincare/treatments we need to slightly damage skin to kickstart our natural repair processes – is this true? Skin regeneration is a natural process that occurs at a cellular level. The top layers of cells constantly replace themselves, but this process slows down with ageing. Specific skin care products can also help improve the natural cell turnover process, hydrate the skin, and get rid of built-up dead skin cells. Sometimes a little deep exfoliation or resurfacing can kick-start skin rejuvenation but without damaging the skin barrier and should be performed by a qualified professional. Sometimes an aggressive approach may lead to worse outcomes and irritant reactions and scarring.

Does our skin barrier become more vulnerable as we get older? The influence of ageing on skin barrier function is widely accepted, but not very much understood and evaluated. As skin ages, it becomes thinner, less elastic, and loses moisture and lipid contact. This leads to the formation of wrinkles, lines, sagging skin, the development of pigmented spots and blemishes and dryness of the skin.

What skin habits comprise the skin barrier? Using potential irritant chemicals on the skin whether they are night creams, retinoids, or exfoliants without proper evaluation and consultation or use of such products on an already compromised skin barrier can lead to damaged skin or give rise to irritant and inflammatory skin conditions.

What skin habits fortify the skin barrier?

#1 - Moisturise regularly to keep the skin hydrated and healthy. Use lotions and serums that contain moisture-binding humectants, such as glycerine, sorbitol and hyaluronic acid which is antiaging as well. #2 - Avoid irritant products like harsh chemical exfoliation, retinoids without prescription, and astringents which can cause inflammation of the skin and skin conditions including eczema and rosacea. #3 - Sun exposure is one of the leading causes of a damaged skin barrier, and continued exposure to UVA and UVB rays impedes skin-barrier restoration. Sun protection with factor 50 is very useful in protecting the skin barrier and photoaging. #4 - A healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet, good sleep, reduced stress and regular exercise will help to improve skin regeneration and natural healing. dermsolutions.co.uk 47

H ow to Beat the P ost Party S eason Low & R emain Motivated into the N ew Y ear Here is some advice from the experts at CPASE Health Club, winners of The National Fitness Awards - National Gym of the Year 2023

Taking your first steps into the gym, advice from Katie Tudbury, Duty Manager & Class Instructor: Do you dread the thought of walking into a gym and not having a clue where to start? Every single person in the gym has once felt that way. Everyone has had their first visit, and has once looked at a machine and not had a clue what it does or how to use it. An excellent introduction to exercise is to join a class. Classes provide a fun atmosphere, where instructors teach you how to correctly perform various exercises, and you have fun along the way! An alternative to this is to invest in a Personal Trainer, who can tailor your sessions specifically to you and your goals. Being a beginner is the best position to be in. A whole world of knowledge and growth is waiting for you, all you need to do is take a deep breath and take that first step. There is truly no better feeling!

48

Tips to keep your spine mobile over winter, from Sal Russ, Kinetic Chain Release expert, Principal Personal Trainer and Clinical Pilates Practitioner: At this time of year sometimes we put our backs through a lot of stress. Carrying shopping, moving furniture, and sleeping in a different bed all have an impact. To avoid niggles over the winter period, include the following: • Regular spinal strengthening and mobility exercises, to help your back to stay moving and strong. • Short regular walks. Walking can improve spinal flexibility, boost balance, and nourish your spinal soft tissues. • Maintain good posture. Many of us have poor posture and are unaware. If you’re sitting down, check your position – are you slouching or leaning forward? Try to limit sitting time as much as you can. The discs in your lower spine take on more pressure when you’re sitting than when you’re standing, and sitting down for long periods of time can actively cause back pain. • Always use good lifting techniques, particularly when lifting heavy objects and twisting at the same time.

How to recover and quickly feel energised again after the party season. Tips and advice from Luca Dorigo, Recovery, Wellness and Rehabilitation Expert: After indulging over the festive season, we can experience a dip in our energy levels. My tips for getting back on track would be to restore your wellbeing and boost your energy levels, putting you back in a positive mindset to challenge yourself again. Consume whole foods and remain hydrated, drinking at least 2 litres of water daily. Processed foods and alcohol trigger stress and inflammation in the body, contributing to us feeling drained and bloated. I would recommend using a Cryosauna or ice bath, both very effective tools to inhibit inflammation and flush away toxins. Cold-shock therapy triggers the release of cold-shock proteins and B-endorphins, improving focus and making you feel rejuvenated. Sleep is key to recovery, motivation and performance. It is important to target seven to eight hours of sleep per night. With your energy levels back up, you are now in the perfect position to set more defined fitness goals.

Beating the post-party slump for a healthier and stronger 2024. Principle Personal Trainer, Dan Hooper, shares his expertise: As the festive season winds down, the post-party blues can cast a shadow on our fitness ambitions. It happens to the best of us. To reignite motivation, always start with a structured approach. Create a weekly workout schedule incorporating both cardiovascular exercises and resistance training. Structured routines without doubt enhance consistency, laying the foundation for lasting habits. Resistance training is so important, not only does it sculpt your physique, but it also boosts metabolism, fostering fat loss and muscle gain. Make sure you Incorporate compound exercises like squats and deadlifts for maximum efficiency. Set clear, practical goals to fuel your motivation. Break down larger objectives into more manageable milestones so you don’t get overwhelmed. Embrace the process, stay as consistent as you can, and have a happy and healthy new year.

49

Advice on how to stay motivated moving into the new year, from Elite Personal Trainer, Mike Neocleous: My best advice to stay motivated moving into the new year would be: • Surround yourself with a supportive community. This could be friends or a partner. CPASE is perfect for this! Share your goals with your community so everyone can cheer you on and pick you up when you need a boost. • Consistency is key, schedule your workouts like you would important meetings. Set the time aside for yourself and let your friends and family know how important this time is in your daily routine. You want your training schedule and diet to align with your lifestyle, so the positive changes you make now are sustainable long term. • Be kind to yourself. Remember… every step forward is a win!

50

Finding your ‘Why’. How to remain motivated well into the new year, with Chelsea Dyson, Elite Personal Trainer: One of my favourite quotes is “The time is going to pass anyway, we might as well put that passing time to the best possible use.” Every day, we should aim to make ourselves better than we were the day before, and with that, each day will be a day well spent. My biggest piece of advice is to think about your ‘Why’ and write it down. You can then use this when your energy is low, or motivation is lacking. Alongside this, think about what you want to have achieved by 4 weeks, 6 months and 12 months; 12 months for the bigger picture, 6 months to take stock of your progress and 4 weeks to see the formation of a new habit. Whatever your goals, have fun doing it. You’ll enjoy the process much more when you start seeing what your body can achieve. It’s an incredible process!

R IBBLE VALLEY E-BII KES E-B There’s an e-bike for all cyclists, whether you’re a beginner that needs a boost, a commuter cruising to work the eco-friendly way, or an off-roader looking for more performance power

E

-bikes work just like a conventional bicycle but with an integrated electrical drive system. (E stands for electric!) Simple to work, the motor operates only while you’re pedalling, so it gives you just a bit of help up the hills or more cycling stamina over longer distances. You choose how much assistance you need and you’ll feel all the fresh air and fitness benefits of any traditional bike, but you’ll cover more miles with the same amount of effort. Ribble Valley e-Bikes is based in Dunsop Bridge in the heart of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Driving through the surrounding scenery alone is worth a trip, but combine it with hiring an e-bike to really explore the area and you have an ideal day out. Aside from the views, the region also has some top pubs and restaurants for when you’ve cycled up an appetite. If you subsequently go on to buy an e-bike from Roger and the team, the cost of rental will be deducted

52

from the price (The ideal way to try before you buy). The health advantages of getting out on your bike in the winter sunshine are countless. According to British Cycling, studies have shown that regular cyclists enjoy the general health of someone approximately 10 years younger. As a low impact exercise, it is much kinder on your joints than many other activities, and outdoor exercise can contribute to better mental health and wellbeing too. Combine crisp blue skies and fresh air with the endorphins released during exercise and an e-bike ride is set to put you in a great mood. As with any cycling, there’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ e-bike rider. Ribble Valley e-Bikes regularly welcomes expert riders seeking the latest technology, experienced cyclists looking to try a different riding experience, occasional cyclists who want to improve their fitness or returning riders who need to rebuild their confidence. E-bikes are also popular with older cyclists who find hills a bit harder (or who want to keep up with the grandchildren!), and those recovering from injury. With a huge range of brands, there’s something for everyone:

• There are classic urban road bikes and hybrids from Raleigh and Moustache. • Bianchi, the premium Italian brand, is best known for performance road bikes but also produces a range of mountain, gravel, hybrid and commuter models. • Keen mountain bikers can choose off-road fun and thrills with GasGas, Husqvarna or Haibike. • Eco-conscious cyclists can opt for the RECO from Advanced Bikes; a great all-rounder with a 100% recyclable carbon composite frame. • If you’re a seasoned cyclist and you have a wish list of components in mind for your dream bike, Velo de Ville offers a bespoke build service. When it comes to getting jobs done or enjoying stress-free family days out complete with picnics, Ribble Valley e-bikes has cargo bikes for leisure or business use, as well as trailers, kids’ seats and more, making your e-bike more versatile than ever. They are a cost-effective and healthy way to commute too, and with the Cycle To Work scheme still in place, you could save up to 47% on your new e-bike. A great way to do your bit for the environment and stick to your New Years’ resolutions in the months ahead. To discuss bike hire or to find out more about e-bikes contact Roger Wolstenholme at Ribble Valley e-bikes on 01200-426246 ribblevalley-e-bikes.co.uk

Are Your Dating Goa Goals Outd Out dated? A 2024 Valent alentiine’s Day Day Refllecti Ref ectio on

WORDS: Alex Mellor-Brook, Dating and Relationship Coach, Co-founder at Select Personal Introductions

V

alentine’s Day promises romance - but as many of us know, also has the potential to create heartache and damage self-esteem. New celebrations like Galentine’s Day have given us a more balanced approach to our mental health and dating goals, so this is a great time to review what you expect from dating, of others and of yourself.

Emotional Intelligence and how to embrace it Back in the day, appearance and income were all that mattered. Today we know that for a relationship to work, we must be empathetic, communicative and self-aware. Valentine’s Day 2024 is a great time to reflect on how you recognise and manage your emotions to be sure that you’re relating to potential partners in a wholesome, healthy fashion.

Digital Detoxing - the new romantic touchstone There’s no doubt that our world has become digital, but where love and romance are concerned, caution is wise.

As smart singles look for meaningful offline experiences to test and deepen their dating relationships, digital detoxing is a trend that will only grow.

Mindful Dating - a genuine approach On a similar note, being present and intentional in your romantic pursuits is bound to bring dividends - by slowing down and truly listening to your date and taking time to be true to yourself, you’ll form better connections and deepen your romantic intuition.

Self-love - the foundation of happiness The basis of any healthy relationship is self-love because a strong sense of self-worth allows us to attract like-minded partners, gives us a focus outside our relationship and ensures we’re not expecting somebody else to ‘fix’ us. If you want more fulfilment and fun, prioritise self-love this Valentine’s Day.

Sustainable Relationships no more disposable dates Modern dating has led to some unattractive behaviours, such as viewing ‘dates’ as something like fast-food, a thing we reach for when we’re tired or feeling lazy, rather than a real commitment to finding a relationship. However, the tide is turning towards a desire for relationship sustainability, mirroring our growing environmental awareness. Valentine’s Day is a good time to think about how we build relationships that last.

Diversity - inclusivity and love The way we view relationships has changed, and that can only be good. Old ideas about ‘perfect matches’ have given way to new ideas that celebrate all kinds of partnerships - this Valentine’s Day could be the perfect occasion to broaden our own thinking about what a relationship looks like and how it works.

Blending Relationships independence and togetherness We’ve all learned about blended families, where children and parents find ways to form new relationships after the original family group breaks up. It requires sensitivity, high self-esteem, empathy and imagination. Our dating journey could be similarly reshaped, to allow us to focus on the right blend of independence and togetherness, enabling everybody to flourish, inside and outside their relationship. So, as we head towards this Valentine’s Day, let’s all aim for an upgrade in our romantic understanding, a reboot of our commitment to ourselves, and a new approach to the exciting, ever-changing world of dating. selectservices.co.uk

ith a new year comes a renewed call for a reset. And, what better way to feel rejuvenated than through a new travel experience that incorporates a touch of wellness? One of my favourite ideas for a relaxing break this year, perhaps surprisingly, comes from the Arctic. Quite understandably, when I say ‘Lapland’ you might immediately think of Santa and snowfall. But, the Nordic countries have another treasure that makes them a wonderful wellness option – saunas. To experience them, head to the recently opened Arctic Bath Hotel for a relaxing retreat with a real difference. The timber structure is truly striking where it sits on the water, giving it the appearance of either floating in summer or being frozen into the landscape during winter. When the skies are dark enough, you’ll also have the added treat of glimpsing the northern lights during your stay. Inside, you can try the three different saunas, followed by a bracing dip in the cold bath.

This age-old ritual is said to have a number of health benefits, though you can opt for more soothing treatments such as hot stone massages and yoga sessions, should you prefer! regent-holidays.co.uk

If you’d rather be somewhere warmer, South Africa’s winelands offer a wonderfully peaceful spot. Here, nestled away in the vineyards with stunning views of the Stellenbosch Mountains, is Lanzerac wine estate. This retreat is steeped in history and evokes a true sense of serenity, thanks to its surrounding natural beauty. Along with its world-famous winery (which was home to the world’s first bottled Pinotage), the hotel has an excellent spa where you can unwind with a massage before relaxing in the sun on the scenic terrace. This, combined with al fresco wine tastings, tranquil walks and gourmet food crafted from locally produced ingredients makes for heavenly relaxation. rainbowtours.co.uk

chloss Elmau was built during World War 1 by renowned philosopher Dr Johannes Muller, positioned 1000 metres above sea level and flanked by thick forest on all sides. The spectacular landscape encompasses crystal clear lakes, rushing streams and the backdrop of the imposing snow-capped Alps. It was reminiscent of The Sound of Music when I visited in mid-September with bright blue, cloudless skies and a rolling meadow filled with wildflowers. King Ludwig II’s fairy tale palace, Neuschwanstein Castle, rises out of this landscape with its majestic turrets. Schloss Elmau played host to the G7 summit

in 2015 and 2022 you can certainly understand why this 5-star superior resort was chosen. Trudeau jogged with his security team throughout the Alpine trails and Boris Johnson charmed staff and swam in the lake in this secluded haven. Celebrity guests and sports people are commonplace including the 90’s German supermodel Claudia Schiffer. The resort comprises of two distinct hotels, aptly named The Hideaway and The Retreat. 73

Rebuilt in 2007 The Hideaway consists of 115 rooms and suites, Badehaus Adult Spa, Oriental Hammam, family spa, nature spa, 4 restaurants, a tea lounge, jazz bar, a concert hall, a bookstore and a library. The resort consists of 47 rooms and suites, an adult spa and onsen, library lounge, boardroom, a yoga pavilion and a summit pavilion. The ambience of the hotel is impressive yet relaxing, blending décor from Iran, India and Indonesia. The outcome is relaxing and inviting, and you immediately sink into your surroundings. A representation of the Hindu god Ganesha was chosen by owner Dietmar Mueller- Elmau, “Ganesha is a symbol of being able to discern between good and bad,” Dietmar said. His love affair with the East is clearly reflected throughout the hotel. Personal wellbeing retreats are a feature of the resort. During my stay, I experienced an ‘Individual Massage’ within the Badehaus Adult Spa. An old school spa featuring endless saunas, steam baths and oriental hammam. The spa has been crafted from 200-million-year-old Jurassic limestone from nearby Solnhofen. One point of difference with Schloss Elmau is that it provides a worldwide historical and cultural programme consisting of 200 concerts, readings and film screenings during the year. During my stay, I was most fortunate to attend a concert by Ludovico Einaudi a world-renowned composer and pianist who composed his work ‘Seven Days Walking’ while staying at Schloss Elmau. The diverse range of cuisine on offer at Schloss Elmau is befitting of its superior 5 -star status. Luce D’Oro is the fine dining 2-star option created by Head Chef Christoph Rainer. He blends exquisite dishes from French-Japanese cuisine. The result is beautiful yet delicious dishes. This restaurant is less formal than most 74

Michelin star experiences and has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Indian, Pan- PanMediterranean, Sushi and Sashimi, Thai and Bavarian cuisine are featured in the resort’s other restaurants. I also experienced The Elmauer Alm hike and lunch during my stay. We were guided through a gentle 30-minute walk and then rewarded with delicious local Bavarian delicacies in Schloss Elmau Alm. The restaurant was built in 1924 and is set in beautiful Alpine pastures. One of the highlights of my stay was a Jivamutki yoga class taught by the very knowledgeable Johannes Mikenda. The class took place in The Pavilion, an impressive wooden structure, but I saw classes taking place on the outdoor yoga platform. Various yoga retreats with one of the world’s best yoga teachers make Schloss Elmau possibly one of the most exclusive yoga retreats in the world. Also on hand with advice is Dr Imke Konig, a renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and one of the best in Europe. Children are highly catered for at Schloss Elmau and a programme of edutainment with soccer camps run by Thomas Albeck, youth trainer for the German Bundesliga feature throughout the year. The range of educational activities includes literature workshops, zoom photo courses, science lab, chess academy, a manga workshop drawing course and hands-on woodcraft workshops. Local places of interest include the city of Munich, Linderhof Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, Innsbruck and Herrenciemsee Castle and can be arranged through the hotel’s concierge.

Other activities include aquatics swim camp, racing bike tour weeks, tennis, archery, alpine wildlife safaris, fly fishing, kite surfing and golf. Schloss Elmau provides a year-round sanctuary for its visitors. Its appeal is wide. Catering for the active, culturally discerning, families and couples alike. The number of repeat visitors is a testament to this notably prominent world leaders of the G7! schloss-elmau.de 75

et in a 700-acre agricultural estate Borgo Pignano consists of an 18th century villa, elegant maisonettes and 6 uniquely designed villas with private pools all within a hamlet that dates back to Etruscan times. A further two villas will be ready in the Spring of 2024. A 90-minute drive from Pisa, the estate provides a haven from the tourist traps where guests can truly unwind. Although San Gimignano and Siena are a short drive away. The estate’s owner Welsh-born Michael Moritz, a former journalist and later venture capitalist and philanthropist, has invested heavily in Borgo Pignano to offer a unique experience to its guests. During your stay, you can explore the organic farm, biodynamic kitchen gardens, olive groves, orchards, meadows, lakes, waterfalls and woodlands. Prosecco falls within the grounds is a popular area and romantic picnics can be arranged by the

dedicated team to create the most perfect setting for a proposal. I stayed in the main villa in the Marchese Suite. The villa consists of 16 individually designed rooms. Beautifully restored, my suite had a painted fresco on the lofty ceiling, elegant furnishings, Murano chandeliers, a balcony, a four poster bed and a separate bathroom with a freestanding bath and separate shower. The rooms have been furnished with beautifully curated Italian antiques and would not look out of place in the pages of World of Interiors. Tuscany has long been a refuge for artists and Borgo Pignano continues this tradition. Art adorns the walls of the suites from well-known British artists such as Euan Uglow, Celia Paul, Catherine Goodman and also 77

many from visiting artists. Borgo Pignano offers year-round art residencies to young students of the Royal Drawing School and each summer hosts a group of students for a week of painting and drawing. The sunsets are particularly memorable overlooking Volterra and lend themselves to being painted. The 18th century villa has all the traditional trappings of a country estate the library, billiards room, music room, ballroom and grand stone staircase. There are plenty of areas to unwind and take in the beauty of your surroundings. Wi-Fi is present throughout the estate and has a cinema and TV room A yoga room is available as is a fully equipped gym, infinity pool, 5 a side, tennis courts and basketball court. A further pool will be completed early this year. Sunset cocktails garnished with flowers from the gardens can be enjoyed pre-dinner on the Belvedere overlooking the natural beauty of the extensive estate. Other activities on offer include cooking classes, farm tours, painting classes, horse riding lessons and treks, pilates, wine tasting, truffle-hunting by expert

guides using dogs and honey making. The trails are perfect for trekking, mountain biking and E biking. Children are well catered for. Activities include swimming, nature trails, candle-making, pizzamaking, arts and crafts as well as sporting activities. The ‘Herbal Laboratory Experience’ was particularly unique and I was invited to make a balm using oils and ingredients with both medicinal and aromatic properties. A range of products using high-quality raw ingredients are on offer to purchase in the reception. I bought the whole range as found the olive oil-based products particularly benefitted my skin type. The exclusive spa offers treatments within the estate’s enchanting well where in medieval times water was collected for the village. Treatments are carried out in a candle-lit limestone cave setting, “Grotta”, a range of aromatherapy massages, skincare treatments, beauty therapies and couples wellbeing treatment using products with active ingredients from the estate. Bridal packages are also available on request. The biodynamic vegetables and fruits are harvested from the kitchen gardens and allow for

seasonal menus within the restaurant. The Villa Pignano Restaurant was awarded the Green Star in the Michelin Guide 2022. Accompanied by an extensive selection of organic and biodynamic wines from the estate and from other Tuscan vineyards. The Medieval Fireplace Restaurant serves Tuscan cuisine in a relaxed, social environment. The open fire creates a relaxing ambience in a traditional setting. The estate grounds include arable fields and a range of Tuscan bread is baked each morning on the estate. The smell of baked bread woke me up each morning and wafted throughout the villa. Honey and preserves are also produced as well as cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. The winery produces red, white and rose wines using an organic method without chemicals. The Italian passion for authentic cuisine, wine and organic ingredients is very important within the estate. The pleasure of eating good meals in the beauty of the estate and the pride the staff feel for their surroundings is clearly evident. The staff and service were exceptional and I felt truly rested after my experience of the estate. Whether spending time with your family, as a couple or even as an independent traveller, Borgo Pignano is an elegant and enchanting experience. borgopignano.com 79

Though it’s billed as the adventurous Mini, the Countryman is showing off its sporty side with a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and almost 300bhp, as well as the advantage of all-wheel drive. Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

SHOUTOUT 2 MY X BMW’s second-generation X2 promises the latest technology and style, writes James Fossdyke. And there’s even an electric version.

T

he BMW X2 was one of those cars that looks pretty pointless at first. Essentially a more expensive, coupe version of the X1 that offered little more in terms of space or performance, the old model looked very much like a car intended to appeal to the heart, rather than the head. Even so, customers flocked to it in their droves, and sales remained strong even when the car began to feel decidedly outdated. Now, though, there’s a new X2, and like its predecessor, it’s basically a more expensive and barely more practical version of the X1, offering a slightly more coupe-like shape and, on the face of it, not an awful lot else. Yet if you look closer, you’ll notice significant improvements. The cabin, for example, now comes with BMW’s very

82

latest touchscreen technology, ably assisted by BMWs iDrive rotary control that allows you to navigate the system without taking your eyes off the road so much. There’s enhanced driver assistance technology, too, and every model comes in BMW’s desirable and motorsport-inspired M Sport form, giving every car a visual lift compared with a more run-of-the-mill X1. And that’s before we come to what’s under the skin. Like the X1 on which it’s based, the X2 is expected to be offered with a choice of petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains, giving customers the chance to pick the engine that suits them. So far, only the 168bhp sDrive20i engine, the high-performance, 296bhp M235i xDrive and the all-electric, 309bhp iX2 xDrive30 have been announced, but other options are expected to join the range later. There were some sad faces when Mercedes announced it was dropping the svelte C-Class Coupe and E-Class Coupe models, both of which had proven remarkably popular. But now Mercedes has replaced both models with one car, dubbed the CLE. Offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines initially, with a plug-in hybrid to follow at a later date, the swoopily styled Mercedes will also be offered in a choice of different trim levels. What’s more, the CLE will get Mercedes’ latest infotainment system, called MBUX, with an enhanced digital assistance feature and better integration with smartphones. VORSPRUNG DURCH INCREMENTS Audi had to jump through some legal hoops to get hold of the Q4 name, which was formerly reserved for Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s four-wheel-drive cars, but it turned out to be well worth it. The Q4 e-tron electric family SUV has become a popular choice among customers, and that popularity has made it worthy of an update. Now with greater charging capability (assuming you can find a charger powerful enough) and more efficient electric motors, the Q4 e-tron offers greater usability than before, and Audi has tweaked the steering and suspension to make it more pleasant to drive. Whether these comparatively small changes will add up to a big difference remains to be seen, but it’s expected to be a step in the right direction. Audi Q4 e-tron, from £49,915, audi.co.uk

The MGB GT is a charming classic, but as James Fossdyke has been finding out, a little magic from a workshop in Oxfordshire can make all the difference

O

ld cars come with myriad charms. Hailing from a time when design teams were led by one person with a vision, they have a distinct style that’s missing from modern vehicles, and the thought of tearing through the countryside in a classic car is definitely an appealing one. Particularly if you’re on your way to the pub. But like all old things, whether they’re cars, pets, people or houses, they need the right maintenance if you want them to work properly. And even then, they aren’t always reliable. That’s where companies like Frontline come in. From an unassuming industrial unit by a railway line just south of Oxford, the small team painstakingly restores and improves old cars, stripping away the years of wear, tear and sometimes neglect, before reconstructing them to the owner’s exacting specifications. Primarily, although not exclusively, the company works with MGBs, the small British coupes and roadsters built just a few miles away between 1963 and 1995. But Frontline does more than just fix up some old classics. By stripping away most of the mechanical features and the interior, the company manages to make these cars usable every day. Out go the wheezy old engines, replaced with more modern power plants (including electric motors, if you ask nicely), and the gearboxes are replaced, too. Cooling systems, brakes and heating are all up for modification and replacement, and Frontline’s duo of schoolfriends-cum-trim shop specialists will build a new interior exactly the way you want it. It’s a good little business that Frontline has got going, and the firm is thriving, with orders streaming in from customers around the world. After all, who doesn’t like the idea of a classic British sports car that actually works? And it will – or at least should – work. There’s no more fear of ending your journey in a cloud of steam at the roadside than there would be in a modern sports car, and given the evident quality of the craftsmanship on show, there’s arguably even less chance of things going to pot. Although it might be easy for Frontline to look upon its handiwork and think ‘ job done’, the company refuses to rest on its laurels. And for

84

the 60th anniversary of the MGB, there’s a new special edition. It’s called the LE60 – a name we can’t type without thinking of a certain Danish building toy – and it has taken the Frontline build to a whole new level. Ordinarily, customers choosing a Frontline would get a 2.4-litre Mazda engine in place of the crummy four-cylinder used in the original. That’s lovely, but it isn’t exactly supercar stuff, and given LE60 customers will be asked to part with more than £200,000 for their car, it wasn’t really up to snuff. So the engineers took the old Rover V8 engine, notorious for its unreliability yet loved for its power and sound, and set to work. Pretty much everything was changed except the main engine block, and even that was modified, but Frontline now reckons it has managed to give the old motor modern reliability credentials. That engine has been crammed under the MGB GT’s long bonnet (unlike other Frontline MGBs, the LE60 is only available as a ‘GT’ coupe), and the cabin has been completely revamped. Air conditioning, posh leather, wood trim and satellite navigation are just some of the options available in the beautifully crafted and era-sympathetic interior, all of which is hand built to your specification. Frontline has even built a mock-up of an MGB interior in its HQ so customers can have a special seat fitting session. Our test car came with distressed brown leather ideally suited to a sports car of the era, and it featured a rally-specification exterior that’s common to all LE60s. Customers can, of course, choose any colour they like, but all LE60s come without the chrome bumpers that are so often seen on classic MGs. The ‘pepper-pot’ wheels are standard, too, along with the dark window surrounds and the widened body. In short, it’s designed to look just like an ordinary MGB GT, albeit with a few sporty modifications. But that image hides some incredible engineering that sees the 4.8-litre V8 engine churn out around 375bhp, all of which goes to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. And because the car only weighs just over a tonne, that’s an impressive power-to-weight ratio. So impressive, in fact, that

the LE60 will get from 0-62mph in about four seconds, which puts it on a par with a modern Porsche 911. Speed, however, is only one part of the LE60 puzzle, because it comes with that stellar V8 engine that gurgles and spits its way through a massive vocal range that rises to a scream of intense rage as you wring its neck. They don’t really make engines like this anymore. Except, of course, Frontline does. Yet for all the modern engineering, the Frontline still feels very much like a classic car. The noise is still old school, the skinny steering wheel feels lively between your fingertips, and the suspension doesn’t have the deftness we’ve come to expect from modern sports cars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s comfortable – the LE60 rides a little like an old Mazda MX-5, with a slight softness to it that you just don’t get from, say, a go-faster Porsche 911 – but it doesn’t have the body control of

86

modern cars. In fact, the suspension is merely an upgrade on the original, rather than a wholesale substitute, so there’s still a bit of lean in corners when you’re driving too quickly. That’s a good thing in my book, though. So many modern sports cars are so capable that you can’t really enjoy them on the road – at least not legally – so a bit of playfulness is welcome. The LE60 is great fun, and though it commands serious money, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. It wants you to rev the engine and push on a bit when the mood takes you, and there’s no need to wrap it in cotton wool. Yeah, I’d probably garage it, partly for security and partly because it’s too beautiful to leave outside in the snow, wind and rain, but there’s no reason why you couldn’t use it every day if you so wished. It has a big boot, and unlike the original, it has been painted and treated properly, so it shouldn’t rot. At least not as long as it’s properly maintained. The LE60, then, is the ultimate classic car. It has the period-correct styling and the soundtrack to match, but it comes with the handling of a 1990s sports car and the reliability of one from the 2020s. It can be specified with all the modern features, too, and though the price is a sticking point – you could buy a very fast supercar for that money – the Frontline is still about as good as classic cars get.

trends, whilst also responding to the ever-changing, opulent requests of clients. KLAFS is widely regarded as a world-leader in wellbeing facilities. Established in Germany in 1928, the premium brand is known for its innovative take on traditional saunas and spas, bringing designled products to homes and hotels across the country. Alongside Guncast’s luxury swimming pools, KLAFS full range of specialist spa facilities include saunas, sanariums, steam baths, mud baths, hammams, ice lounges, ice fountains and snow cabins – each crafted to the customers’ exacting requirements, whether it’s within a home, luxury development or hotel spa. To add to the portfolio, with the recent acquisition of a majority stake of Dröm UK Ltd, Guncast Swimming Pools & KLAFS has gained another high profile company to further strengthen its impressive wellness offerings in the UK market.

92

As we head into 2024, KLAFS have recently brought a range of innovative new products to the UK market, and is already seeing a huge demand for projects kicking off in the New Year. Gilles Darmon, KLAFS Director in the UK, comments; “We are so proud to have achieved such a high number of sales in such a short period of time, following the opening of our Cheshire base. There has been a huge appetite for both Guncast Swimming Pools and KLAFS products and our unique design and build service – both commercially and domestically – and we only expect this to grow further as we become more prominent in the area. “We are continuing to expand at an exciting rate – operating from a large showroom in Cheshire, as well as one down in Surrey will ensure clients are able to conveniently meet with the team up and down the country, and see and feel the quality of our latest KLAFS designed cabins and the wider wellness products we can offer.” One of the organisation’s most exciting new products is their S11 sauna – a collaboration between KLAFS and Studio F.A. Porsche, a premium design agency and originators of the Porsche design. The most exclusive and luxurious sauna experiences to date, the S11 is a limited run of just 999 units. Customers can enjoy the cabin’s warm and inviting atmosphere, which has been

specially designed with comfort in mind. Carefully dimensioned, precisely angled horizontal wooden slats create seemingly free-floating loungers, set against a backdrop of traditional Japanese Washi paper, and fit with cutting-edge lighting technology to deliver the most luxurious sensory phenomenon. The GESA Sauna by KLAFS and renowned designer Gesa Hansen combines Scandinavian comfort with Japanese minimalism. Sleek white benches, clean lines, black walls and glass front characterise the stylish Japandi sauna – a totally unique offering in KLAFS’ catalogue. Allowing sauna lovers to reap the health benefits of sauna bathing more effectively, KLAFS’ new Vitality Boost gives both the user’s cardiovascular and immune system an intensive workout. Integrated into KLAFS’ Sanarium Heater Majus, the Vitality Boost automates running water over hot stones, not only creating a soothing soundscape but also increasing humidity and perceived temperature within the cabin. An air current distributes the water vapour evenly across the skin, raising users’ internal body temperature and working vital bodily functions at a higher level.

Health and Wellbeing Benefits The health benefits of swimming, sauna use and steam bathing are well-documented. Swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise, which can not only improve heart health and contribute to muscle growth and weight loss, but can also have huge benefits to mental wellbeing and mood levels. The heat of a sauna can increase blood flow, improve cardiovascular and respiratory functions, and even battle common colds and viruses by encouraging the production of white blood cells. Similarly, steam baths can be particularly effective in easing sinus congestion and rebalancing skin moisture levels, helping to ward off seasonal sniffles and skin conditions. The heat and humidity of steam baths can also work to simultaneously unclog and cleanse pores, leaving the user with a clear and refreshed complexion. T he Impo Imp o rtan rtancc e of a H igh-Perfo igh-Perforr ming Wind Win d ow System Syste m With the UK government focusing on the quality and performance of homes across the country, window and door specialists Everest are exploring the role a window plays within a home.

W

indows are a fundamental element but more often than not homeowners focus on what they look like rather than what they can achieve and the many benefits they offer a home. But, according to Anthony Threlfall, Head of Marketing at Everest, there’s much more to a window than what meets the eye. “Extensive research, trials and tests are completed during the development and manufacturing phase of a new window,” he explains. “Windows are truly put through their paces because how they perform will have a big impact on a home’s indoor environment. It’s incredibly important homeowners, needing replacement windows, find a product that will deliver fantastic results year after year. “As windows are a significant investment and are built to last, we’d always encourage homeowners to do their homework before

purchasing so they can be sure they’ve found a window which can cater to their individual needs.”

Modern Window Systems Whilst the perception may be that from the outside most windows are the same, their performance can change drastically depending on what specific products are used. “At Everest, we believe the winning formula for a high-performing window system is one that combines quality glass with a specially configurated glazing unit or frame,” adds Anthony. “What’s more, we understand the value of giving homeowners a choice which is why we offer a range of options so homeowners can find replacement windows that create optimum comfort throughout their home.” Due to incredible advances in technology, modern window glass has the ability to reduce outside noise levels, improve a home’s energy efficiency, reflect heat in and out of a property and much more. Window frames also have incredible capabilities and are available in timber, aluminium or uPVC. There have been

some fantastic advances in uPVC frames in particular which now not only look great in a range of colours and style but also deliver exceptional performance. “Giving people the opportunity to pick which glass and glazing unit they would like incorporated into their home helps to increase the chances that their new windows will generate incredible results,” explains Anthony. “High-performing windows are not only responsible for creating a great indoor environment but, those with a winning glass and glazing unit combination, will save money on their energy bills and reduce the amount of heat loss in their home.” Everest have recently launched their new uPVC window system combining impeccable energy saving performance with high levels of security, beautiful aesthetics and a range of glass options tailored to successfully meet the specific needs of each homeowner.
