Professional couple Geoff and Sue sought a kitchen for their four storey Victorian semi-detached townhouse that was both elegant and stylish.

Diane crafted a kitchen that would make a real impact in this larger area. Dark oak units sit against a stylish backdrop of white dĂŠcor, offering a sleek and minimalist aesthetic.

The existing kitchen did not make the best use of the space yet neither Geoff nor Sue could agree on a style for a new look. That was until they met with Diane at her showroom, the couple were instantly impressed by the kitchens on display and duly arranged for Diane to visit them at their home.

Base units and a feature island in a concrete finish provide the perfect contrast, whilst an oval breakfast bar extending from one side of the feature island adds balance to the room.

Diane and her team spent time to understand the couple’s requirements and created a design that offered the lifestyle enhancing statement kitchen that they desired.

To achieve a new open plan layout, the kitchen living space floor was levelled, a wall was removed and contemporary sliding glazed doors were added, allowing light to flood in to the newly configured space.

Diane and her team, with their professional and helpful approach, have created a space for Geoff and Sue which offers the perfect enhancement to busy family life.

The couple are thrilled with how the project turned out, they are grateful that they visited the Diane Berry showroom and saw for themselves why it is a multi award-winning design practice.

Work is a small office in an old school house in Kinnerton - home is 2 miles away a little further into North Wales. I feel very lucky to have almost no commute! I walk to and from the office every day with my two Schnauzers, Walter & Neo What did you want to be when you were younger?

Apart from the obvious girly picks (nurse, stewardess, teacher) I decided when I was 15 I wanted to work in events. I had a slog to get here but I’ve worked in events since I was 25.

Name a few of your favourite places to be...

Anywhere in Italy, but I particularly love Tuscany and Rome. Almost anywhere in the sunshine as I’m pretty certain I am cold blooded! Good weather, culture, great food and I’m happy.

Yoko Ono, Idris Elba and Skepta are announced as part of the MIF programme

The Manchester International Festival (MIF) announces the first artists for its 2019 programme, with each commission set to offer a distinctive and very personal take on how we relate to today’s world.

MIF 19 takes place from 4-21 July 2019, with artists from across the globe creating an enormous variety of new work in spaces throughout the city.

The opening event - BELLS FOR PEACE – Yoko Ono invites us to gather together in Cathedral Gardens for the opening event at MIF 19 and send a message of peace to the world. Thousands of diverse voices and a people's orchestra of bells from home and abroad will ring and sing out for peace – and welcome the world to Manchester.

Yoko Ono has been among the world’s most renowned and respected artists for more than 50 years. This new commission is the first major work she has created for the city of Manchester. Yoko said: “The beauty of this piece will break the sky and more. One of the reasons this is very different is the fact that all of us will be making the sound together. More than ever, we must come together to heal each other, and the world. PEACE is POWER! I love you all.”

TREE Created by Idris Elba & Kwame Kwei-Armah

Tree takes audiences on a thrilling journey in search of the soul and spirit of contemporary South Africa. Created by Idris Elba, whose album Mi Mandela provides the soundtrack, and Kwame Kwei-Armah, the new Artistic Director of London’s Young Vic, this major world premiere production takes place in the round within Upper Campfield Market Hall, one of Manchester’s most atmospheric spaces.

Idris and Kwame’s new work features music, dance and film combined with an exciting and dynamic cast to explore the past, present and future of a country at a crossroads – all through the eyes of one young man on a journey of healing.

Idris said: “Kwame and I have both had a strong desire to work with each other for a long time now. We’ve known each other since we were in our early twenties, and have talked about the kernel of an idea for this show for a while. Our joint ambition being to make a piece of work, inspired by South Africa, using the album Mi Mandela as a starting point.

We’ve both experienced personal moments of healing connected with the country, and we’re starting to explore that together. For me, an interesting part of the process is looking at the next part of the story; the new universe that sprung up after Mandela. To be able to investigate that with Kwame, a writer with such tremendous vision for whom I have great respect and love, and within the artistic community of MIF, is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.”

Kwame Kwei-Armah said “The idea of dancing with a friend whose art and ideas have inspired me for as long as we have

known each other simply thrills me. To bring this work to MIF and the Young Vic is as exciting as it gets for me.

Skepta

DYSTOPIA987 – Skepta invites you to enter another world in this series of intimate and immersive experiences. Held in a secret Manchester location, Dystopia987 is a waking dream that presents Skepta’s singular vision of the future: deep; dark; radical; and riveting.

Featuring a live set from Skepta, guest appearances from hand-picked performers and DJ’s, a wealth of new technology, and a cast inhabiting a hidden netherworld, Dystopia987 is a journey into eternity – a future riven with uncertainty and fear - but rich in wonder and possibility. Since emerging as a producer and MC in 2004, Skepta has become one of the most significant British artists in music today. The Mercury Prize winner and BRIT Award nominee has built a diverse audience through both recordings and live performances, and his enduring influence is felt throughout contemporary culture. Skepta described the project as “Real Life Magic.”

Headliner The Hale Barns Carnival returns for its third year, surpassing previous events with a musical line-up which much larger festivals may well envy, Natalie Anglesey chats with Martin Kemp about his involvement

D

ue to phenomenal demand, another high-status act has been added to the 80’s line-up with headliner Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp on the DJ turntables. He’ll join Owen Paul, who swapped the football pitch for music and shot to fame with ‘My Favourite Waste of Time’, and Nathan Moore from Brother Beyond, with their hit ‘The Harder I Try’, as well as disco and soul legends Odyssey and The Real Thing.

Max Eden, from Hale Barns Events, is the enthusiastic person behind the organisation: “This year is most definitely our biggest line-up to date, and I’m excited that we have yet another brilliant performer to add to the programme. I grew up listening to the hits of Spandau Ballet and having seen Martin

Kemp on the turntables at the Rewind Festival; I was again suitably impressed. I loved his whole set which pulled people together. There was a great community feel about his whole act- so we’re delighted he’s joining us for the Hale Barns Carnival.”

Martin will headline the Sunday evening concert with a Back to the 80s DJ set, to entertain the crowd. He admits that his life changed for the better when he joined his big brother Gary’s band, The Gentry, as the bass player, before it being renamed Spandau Ballet.

The rest, as they say, is history.

“I remember Manchester with great affection,” Martin tells me. “In the early days with the band we played in all sorts of clubs - but don’t ask me to name them because they’re probably all pulled down by now. But when we became more successful, we played the larger venues and had a great reception. Of course, I knew Granada Television Studios better when I was acting in

In the interim Martin had pursued a successful TV and film career with roles in EastEnders and The Krays, as well as TV appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Island. “I was happiest judging the BBC talent show Let It Shine because I was discovering and mentoring young musical talent.”

But I wondered when the DJ act began? “Well, I’ve been doing it for about a year now and absolutely loving it. It’s a great feeling reminding crowds what a great period the eighties were for good music. You can see them singing along, and they know all the words - almost reliving a happy

time in their lives – it’s a kind of role-playing!

When I grew up, you had to save your pocket money up to buy your favourite record which you’d play again and again. Now music is much more accessible to people. So there’s the nostalgia value. Although all music is on a computer these days at gigs, I like to mix it up so that it’s familiar, but almost sounds new with just a little different edge to it. Yet still keeps the crowds happy!”

Manchester. But I’ll tell you what I love most about this city. Eventually, they stopped knocking down the lovely old buildings and started renovating them- particularly around the canal.

So I’m really looking forward to coming back and seeing if I recognise anywhere now.”

Spandau Ballet, with the brothers Kemp and lead vocalist Tony Hadley, achieved musical success with four of their albums reaching the Top Ten in the UK album charts. The song ‘True’ also gave the band their first UK number one album and top-selling single. They also enjoyed worldwide fame with hits like ‘Only When You Leave’, ‘Through the Barricades’, and ‘Gold’. Sadly, because of a dispute over royalties, the band split up in the early 1990s.

Although they eventually reformed in 2009, that reunion didn’t last long. Had Martin kept in touch? “Let’s just say I keep in touch with close friends, but of course my brother and I remain really close and talk regularly.”

Martin laughed when I asked if his DJ son Roman had given him any tips? “He’s far too busy with his successful Capital FM Radio show,” he laughs. “But I’m not just proud of him because he’s followed me into the music business but because he’s grown into a nice lad. I’m equally proud of my daughter Harley who makes commercials for television and is also into music.”

London- born Martin grew up in Islington and attended the Anna Scher Children’s Theatre drama club with his brother Gary. As a child actor, he appeared in many TV shows including Jackanory, The Tomorrow People and Dixon of Dock Green. Little did the two brothers know then they would go on to make a film about the notorious Kray twins, Ronald and Reginald.

“Well, you see that project was a subject close to my mum and dad as they had grown up in the same area as the Krays. It was also great filming with my brother because that mutual trust was there which is so important in acting.”

Their film performances received a great deal of critical acclaim. So Martin moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s and made appearances in television series such as The Outer Limits and Highlander. He appeared in a couple of Hollywood horror films before returning home to play an

award-winning role as Steve Owen in EastEnders famously. Would he contemplate returning to a television series?

“I’ve learnt in this business never to say never again,” Martin laughs. He also starred in several television dramas, including Can’t Buy Me Love opposite fellow EastEnders star, Michelle Collins, although he says he’s happiest these days behind the camera.

“I discovered directing is my passion, and I have my own production company. My first feature film, as a director, was Stalker released in 2011. I also directed a low-budget 20-minute short film entitled Karma Magnet, which starred my brother Gary, my son Roman and my wife, Shirlie.”

Shirlie was a former backing singer in Wham!

And was one half of the 1980s pop duo, Pepsi and Shirlie- so music’s very much a family affair.

Along with his son, Martin featured in a factual television series, Dangerous Adventures For Boys, based on the best-selling book, and also guest -starred as Mr Burley in the BBC drama series, Waterloo Road.

A mixture of stage and television still keeps Martin busy. He appeared in the UK and Ireland tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the musical alongside Jason Manfred, Michelle Collins and Phil Jupitus. He went on to host the first series of Martin Kemp’s Murder Files on the UK TV channel Quest. But music remains his first love and the reason that brings him back to the Hale Barns Carnival.

The weekend’s programme will open at noon on the Saturday with an exceptional performance from the Manchester Survivors Choir, including survivors and people directly affected by the Manchester Arena bomb attack in 2017. Saturday evening’s concert shines a spotlight on disco and soul with live performances from The Real Thing and Odyssey.

The whole point of this festival is that every penny of the ticket money will go towards building a community centre for Hale Barns. We need to build a centre which will house everything we need as a community centre for adult learning.

It’ll cost over £1million, so we need another £100 thousand. But this is going to be a year to remember for sure!”

Organised by Hale Barns Events, the carnival promises fun for all the family with more than 100 attractions including falconry displays, magic illusionists, traditional funfair rides, and an artisan market free of charge between 12 pm and 5 pm. Live entertainment during both days includes talented local acts, and award-winning tribute acts celebrating the music of Bananarama, Status Quo, and Duran Duran.

The evening concerts are ticketed, and the gates open at 6 pm with the shows starting at 7.30pm.

100% of the ticket revenue will go towards community projects.

Taking place in the spectacular grounds of Capesthorne Hall, Rewind North is an annual music festival featuring icons of yesteryear.

Craig Hough sits down with Event Manager Katt Lingard to find out more For those that don’t know- what is Rewind Festival and what can people expect?

Rewind Festival is an incredible weekend dedicated to music that has defined generations from the 80s and beyond. It’s all-out fancy dress fun, with appearances from iconic artists, the UK’s hottest comedians, a full programme of family fun and so much more. Think bottomless brunches, gameshow themed bingo, karaoke battles, giant jukebox DJ sets and so much more. We’ve got boutique camping for a weekend of luxury, regular camping for the seasoned festival goer - and we have great value day tickets for those who

fancy some Saturday or Sunday night fever. It’s all about sharing a weekend with like-minded music lovers and partying like its 1989.

Who came up with the original Rewind concept and what was their vision?

David Heartfield, the founder of Rewind, wanted to create a festival that showcased some of the incredible music from the 80s that influenced a generation and continue to fit into everyone’s playlists today. We’ve expanded the genre to include disco, rock, funk, pop and more spanning the 80s and beyond, and we think it’s one of the most unique and fun-loving festivals in the world.

What kind of crowd attends Rewind festival?

Rewind is truly a festival for everyone, we have children from as young as three coming with grandparents in their 60s! We have a full family programme of entertainment, with cinema, face painting, arts and crafts and even a Kids Disco. Our core fans keep returning year on year and tend to have grown up in the 80s - the rest, tend to wish they had! We have big groups

coming to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or just an annual get together. We’re really proud of our diverse, friendly and fun-loving crowd.

Your host venue is the stunning Capesthorne Hall, why was this chosen?

Cheshire is a beautiful area, and Capesthorne Hall and the grounds provide an incredible location for the weekend. The house stands pride of place behind the main stage, and there are very few festivals that have their own lakeside walkway back to the campsite.

Are you planning on introducing anything new to the layout of the Festival this year?

We will be adding more entertainment than ever, including an open- air sing along cinema, full family programme and a jam-packed schedule of comedy, games and our very own big breakfast disco! Alongside that we’ll have our very own crazy golf craft bar, Rewind’s Got Talent competition and lots more to add to a weekend of incredible music.

Who comes up with the line-up and how do you decide on what acts will attract the biggest audience?

Myself and the rest of the team approach the big question of the line up throughout the whole year, we’re already booking the 2020 event! There are lots of factors involved; the first being availability of artists that may no longer perform regularly, are based outside the UK, or already have gruelling schedules. Booking three festivals across six weeks is quite the logistical task! We’re really pleased with the variety on offer this year - and have plans to make sure that there’s something new and exciting on offer for years to come (with a lot of artists very excited to come and play for our audiences!)

Working on such a large-scale festival is a dream job, how did you get involved

I have worked in festivals since I very young, growing up on the site of T in the Park in Kinross, Scotland. When the opportunity came up to work on Rewind - with some of the most talented people in the business - I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

What is your role?

I am the Event Manager so responsible for the overall festival, its content, line up and delivery. Everything from booking the bands and traffic plans, through to designing our décor and working out the ticketing systems. I work with a brilliant team throughout the year and on-site who help make sure it is safe, full of fun and our audience can come and shamelessly enjoy a weekend with good friends, music and plenty of surprises along the way.

You’ve a clear passion for festivals, which do you enjoy attending the most?

Some festivals I love for the location, such as Skye Live festival, some I love for the music, such as Y Not Festival but most of all it’s the atmosphere that matters to me - and it’s hard to top Rewind on that front! Particularly in front of my home crowd in Scotland!

Being a Rewind festival veteran, what are some of your past festival highlights?

my parents in the front row singing “I need a hero” along with Bonnie Tyler at the top of their lungs in the sunshine! Rewind North - I was very nervous to tell the landowners that The Jacksons’ tour bus had accidentally knocked down a tree in the artist village - the landowners loved it, made a plaque, and the tree still lives to tell the tale (just a little wonky these days!. Rewind South - hosting our very first boat party on a paddle steamer on the Thames. Think tutus, karaoke and a brass band on an open top boat!

Are there any backstage stories that you can share?

The atmosphere is just as good backstage as it is in the front row. The artists have all known each other for years and enjoy hanging out. Queuing up for dinner alongside the likes of Bonnie Tyler and The Jacksons never stops feeling surreal!

Running such a high-profile festival means there is great potential for things to go wrong, what has been the biggest challenge you have been able to overcome?

Trying to meet expectations of previous Rewinders but also bring a new and unique edge to the festival was a challenge but I think we produced the best Rewind festival to date - and that was only the start!

Organising a festival is like organising a small town, building it in a week, running it for a weekend and taking it down right after. A Family Concern Head of family law at Jolliffe &Co, Elizabeth Hassall talks to Mary Jane Greenhalgh about choosing her career path and how no two days are ever the same.

I

had heard about Elizabeth and her excellent manner with people and was intrigued to meet someone with a reputation of being one of the best-known family lawyers in the North West. I was looking forward to being able to pose the questions I wanted to ask.

With a reputation for being tenacious and thorough, one of the first things I noticed was the exceptionally warm welcome I received from her and how down to earth she is. We chatted about the usual things, our love of the North West, its countryside and its accessibility to the North Wales coast, as well as our shared love of getting down to London - but also getting back home again. Before settling down to business we realised we shared a genuine interest in each other’s lives and backgrounds.

Let me give you some context. Elizabeth is a farmer’s daughter, born in Malpas, South Cheshire and it was at an early age that she became interested in law. When she was fifteen and looking for work experience during the summer holidays, she contacted her grandfather’s solicitor, Jack Bentley, who specialised in working with miners suffering from lung diseases. He gave her work experience for the summer. “It wasn’t an easy option and I spent the majority of the time beside the very large photocopier, almost as big as the room it was in, which one day nearly set on fire. I was thrown in at the deep-end and

although it was hard, I now realise how lucky I was to be given this experience, particularly as I was only 15 at the time.”

Subsequently, Elizabeth did a degree in law and completed her legal exams in Guildford, finishing her Articles back in Wrexham. “This was a very happy time” she shares with me and “I still see people today who I met there all

those years ago. At the time, I covered all types of law from wills to family client work, as well as dealing with property, litigation and some employment issues.” Her next job was more focussed with a role at James James & Hatch specialising in crime. “This was a very maledominated world and my work varied from police call outs, prison visits, bail applications, to manslaughter cases and much more. There was never a dull day.”

“It was now that ‘Family law found me,” she said, and she began to develop her reputation at Hill Dickinson in Liverpool. “It was a great time to be in Liverpool, the Capital of Culture, and work was both exciting and varied and this, coupled with my love of the law and being able to help people, stood me in good stead.

Looking back, at first it was quite tough, and I sometimes struggled to deal with the raw emotion that one witnesses when practising family law, however experience and maturity soon set in.”

Eleven years later, Elizabeth was in Manchester as Head of Family Law for Top 50 Law Firm Halliwells and Gateley LLP. In 2006 she won Cheshire Business Women of the Year Award and was also recognised as tier one and a ‘Leading Individual’ in the Professional Directories, subsequently, in 2014, she chaired the Greater Manchester Collaborative Law Group, before establishing her own family law practice in 2015. Elizabeth however was keen to return to her roots back in Chester and recently joined Jolliffe & Co LLP as the head of their family law team. Clients still come from all over the world, including international sports

people, media people, business people and some of them household names.

In the modern world of technology with an increasing focus on video calls, Elizabeth tells me that she always like to meet a client in person first. “You learn so much more with a face to face meeting”. As she talks to me, she exudes an aura of knowledge and experience and her empathy and warmth shine through. I can see how passionate she is about helping people to achieve the best resolution to their problems and how she would always be ‘the keeper of a secret’ so to speak, which is vital for what she does. “When I see a client at the end of a case moving on with their life, emotionally and financially, it fills me with a great sense of achievement.”

Today an increasing part of Elizabeth’s time is involved dealing with prenuptial cases - her largest instruction being £250 million. “Pre and Post nuptials are becoming very popular and bring a nicer side to my practice as I am working with a client whose wish is to move

In 2004 Elizabeth became ‘A collaborative solicitor’ which was a fundamentally new and straightforward approach to resolving family disputes and difficult issues around a table and she was one of the first of lawyers to get

What have been its key success and why do customers keep coming back?

Tony: As a kid my Mum used to bring a copy of Vogue home, and I’d run upstairs and flick through the pages in my room and my passion just grew from that.

Philip: My Mum and Grandma always wore stunning tailored clothes which ignited my interest at an early age.

Which designers do you admire?

The 1920s was a fascinating era for fashion and we love the work of Charles Worth and Erte, in terms of modern fashion we admire John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

What inspired you to get into fashion?

I have always been interested in electronics and robotics from a really young age and was interested in the manufacturing of fashion. My transition in to fashion design came about later. As I learnt more about manufacturing I started to get really inspired by the fashion design itself and this passion grew.

I had been interested in clothing since the age of 12 since this is when I started to shop for myself.

When it came to choose a university course I opted for Fashion or ‘sewing’ as my mates mocked, but my Mum comforted me in the decision to follow my passion.

I have always admired and been inspired by Hussein Chalayan. His work manages to use wearable technology and unconventional materials. I also admire Gareth Pugh who is futuristic and combines strong silhouettes and strong colour palettes.

• Starting my own business…I run a Menswear Agency, now in its sixth year, which represents clothing manufacturers for the UK/ IRE menswear market.

What does the future have in store for you?

I love learning and perfecting, so becoming a tailor, has fuelled my passion for the sartorial gents’ wardrobe even further. What inspired you to get into fashion?

I always had a deep interest in fashion and art and during my school years- my art teacher, Mr Truman really inspired me to want to pursue a creative career. A lot of it though was really just through my own investigation- I started to become obsessed with buying and collecting Elle Magazines and watching (TV show) Project Runway and this was really what fuelled my aspirations.

Which designers do you admire?

I have always hugely admired Elsa Schiaparelli. She was popular during the 30’s and 40’s for her amazing surrealist fashion pieces. Many of her pieces included incredible embroidery surface designs, highly embellished pieces and intricate trims and finishes. Today, it would have to be Mary Katrantzou - I am constantly in awe at the

In the future, I would really love to move closer to family and to one day have my own embroidery design studio. Continuing to work with beauty and fashion brands on a freelance basis and setting up my own accessories brand which is super exciting.

Cheshire Mum calls on people to sign up for Race For Life

A

Mum-of-two, who has overcome an aggressive form of cancer, is calling on people in Cheshire to sign up to one of this year’s Cancer Research UK Race for Life events taking place across the county.

Business woman Ruth Naylor, 34, of Hale, who has been successfully treated for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – a form of blood cancer – will be lacing up her trainers to take part in Race for Life 10k at Tatton Park on 23 June this year. She wants as many people as possible to join her and raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. This year, for the first time, the charity is inviting everyone in Cheshire – women, men and children - to join the Race for Life.

Ruth knows only how important Cancer Research UK’s work is after her own cancer diagnosis in August 2017 and after losing her mother Louise, aged just 47, to liver cancer 12 years ago.

Ruth was in the throes of setting up her new marketing business when she found out she had cancer in August 2017. She had initially put her exhaustion down to her busy life-style as mum to Eva, now 4, and Oscar, now 2. But after feeling exhausted for several weeks she went to the GP and further tests revealed she had a large tumour intertwined between her lung and her heart. A biopsy showed it was Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Ruth said: “Hearing the words ‘it’s cancer’ was the worst shock of my life. I just couldn’t believe it was happening to me. I kept thinking of my children.

“It was a very scary time, but I was convinced that I’d try and make some good come out of my cancer diagnosis by sharing my experience and supporting the work of Cancer Research UK. “My second phone call after telling my Dad I had cancer was to Cancer Research UK to ask how I could work with them to raise awareness of this awful disease.”

Ruth began eight months of chemotherapy treatment followed by radiotherapy at The Christie Hospital in Manchester. She said: “Chemotherapy for me was brutal. It took me away from my home, my children and my life for months on end. I’ve had four significant scans and biopsies along the way and the anxiety related to waiting for results is pretty crippling. I lost weight due to being unable to combat the sickness side-effects from chemo. I lost my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes about six weeks into treatment so have found this very difficult to deal with.

“Building my confidence to get out and about whilst going through significant physical changes has been a challenge but I’ve pushed myself every step of the way to continue living my life as best as I can.”

During her treatments Ruth set up a highly successful Instagram account documenting her treatment which now has thousands of followers and has spoken at various Cancer Research UK events as well as meeting scientists from the charity.

Former corporate banker Ruth finally found out her treatment had been successful in May last year and signed up to take part in Race for Life to celebrate being cancer free. She said: “It was such a shock to hear the words that I was all clear. I never allowed myself to imagine it could happen at that point so when my consultant opened the conversation with the words “this is the best part of my job….” I quite literally couldn’t believe him. It was completely magical!

“What got me through those 10 months of treatment and beyond was been being open about my disease. Talking honesty to my friends, family and, through social media, complete strangers. I posted regular updates on Instagram and wrote about my experiences, good and the pretty bad along the way and tried to put a relatable face to the disease.

Ruth was so determined to make a difference that she ended up completing both the 5k and the 10k Race for Life at Tatton Park. She also spoke on stage and sounded the starter hooter to set the

She has also been getting used to life after cancer treatment which has included regular scans to check she remains cancer free and rebuilding her fitness.

Ruth is also an ambassador for Cancer Research UK and is setting up Manchester Beats Cancer a fundraising committee made up of businesses to help raise funds for vital research in the North West.

She said: “Going on this rollercoaster of a cancer journey has changed my life in so many ways. I’ve met some amazing people going through cancer who have helped to support me during the last year and a half. Sadly, not all of them are still here. That’s why I’m determined to try and improve things. Cancer survival rates have increased but there is still more work to be done.

FITTING TRIBUTE Ferrari’s latest V8 supercar gets curvaceous bodywork and even more prancing horses

W

hen you think of supercars, Ferrari is invariably the first name that comes to mind. The Italian brand has a reputation other manufacturers would kill for, and that’s largely thanks to its fabled V8s. The Prancing Horse’s back catalogue is a litany of eightcylinder legends, including the F40, the 308 GTB and the 458 Italia. Now, though, Ferrari is paying homage to its legends of yesteryear with this new model.

Dubbed the F8 Tributo, it’s essentially an updated version of the 488 GTB Ferrari revealed in 2015. Ferrari has tweaked the design to make it more aerodynamically efficient, not to mention more beautiful, but don’t go thinking the Tributo is just for show.

The engineers have been hard at work improving the suspension and traction control, as well as boosting the power output.

Like the 488, the Tributo gets a 3.9-litre, twin-turbocharged engine, but where the old car had 661bhp, the newcomer gets a massive 710bhp. It’s the most powerful V8 ever 68

installed in a Ferrari, and it means the Tributo is absolutely rapid. It only accelerates to 62mph a tenth of a second faster than the 488, but the top speed is almost 10mph higher, at a whopping 211mph. Of course, you’ll drive it that quickly, but it’s nice to know you could...

BAT OUT OF HELL If you’ve been a car fan for some years, you might well be familiar with the name Pininfarina. The Italian design house has spent years penning some of the sexiest cars ever made, including the Ferrari 250GT and the Alfa Romeo Spider, but now it’s making cars all of its own. This stunning-looking thing is called the Battista, and it’s an electric supercar with a massive 1,874bhp. That’s nearly 400bhp more than a Bugatti Chiron. But if that sounds tempting, you’ll have to act fast, because just 150 Battistas will be built.

HOME GROWN HERO The Bentayga was already an incredible piece of engineering, but Bentley clearly didn’t feel that its two-tonne, W12-engined 4x4 was quite impressive enough. So Crewe’s finest set to work creating the Bentayga Speed. They fitted a limited-slip differential and upgraded suspension to help it get around corners, before turning their attention to the 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged engine. Tweaked to produce 626bhp, it permits a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and it’ll keep accelerating until it hits 190mph - faster than any other SUV on the planet. One-nil to Cheshire.

WITH A TWISTED Deep in North Yorkshire, a small company is building the ultimate version of the nation’s favourite 4x4. James Fossdyke went north to find out what’s what

T

he word ‘iconic’ is so tired and overused that it’s now almost entirely devoid of meaning. The first PlayStation is iconic. So too are the Omega Seamaster and the George Foreman grille. Next thing you know, the first-generation iPhone will have joined the party.

Using the ‘i’ word to describe something as enduring and well-loved as the Land Rover Defender, then, would be to damn it with faint praise. Despite changing very little in more than 25 years of production, it became the nation’s

workhorse and a calling card of the British farming community. If you visited the countryside, you’d find a Defender.

But now the Defender is gone, consigned to the scrapheap in the sky by emissions legislation, production issues and the cruelty of market forces.

Your local Land Rover dealer simply won’t sell you one. But a Yorkshireman called Charles Fawcett thinks you can buy something even better.

In a nondescript industrial unit on the outskirts of Thirsk, North Yorkshire, Fawcett and his team take the unassuming Landie and evolve it, adding

a range of upgrades to create what he believes is the ultimate Defender.

It might sound like a bold claim, but the truth is that improving the Defender shouldn’t be difficult. If truth be told, the Defender was rubbish. Of course, it was peerless off-road, but it was no use on it. The steering was woeful, the seats didn’t adjust properly and changing gear was like trying to dig out a rockery with a knitting needle. The engine was pretty lethargic, too, having been pinched from a van, and there was nowhere for your right arm. I could go on, but we’d be here all week.

Weirdly, though, Twisted makes no real effort to address many of these problems. The Defender’s basic shape remains unchanged, so the cabin is still best suited to those with only one arm and the handbrake is still somewhere by your left ankle. In short, Twisteds still have all the quirks and foibles of the car that Land Rover fans fell in love with - they’re just a bit more refined.

The ‘basic’ Twisted, the now-sold-out Series I, upgraded the standard car’s diesel engine to churn out a bit more power, fitted new suspension to make it ride more comfortable and added a handful of reasonably restrained visual upgrades.

If you’d never heard of Twisted, you wouldn’t have guessed it wasn’t a standard Defender.

But if you want to, you can do far more. If Fawcett and his team think it fits, they’ll do pretty much anything - including fitting the 520bhp, 6.2-litre V8 engine from a Chevrolet Corvette. You

The options list, then, is incredibly complex, and Fawcett says customers spend months deliberating over which extras they want.

Get it right, though, and the effects are simply staggering. The car we drove - a long-wheelbase five-door ‘110’ model with air suspension - was by far the best Defender I’ve ever driven. The external upgrades were relatively minor, but the mechanical improvements made a world of

difference. The sporty bucket seats were surprisingly comfortable, and the air suspension smoothed over the bumps while the extra soundproofing kept the worst of the wind and tyre noise at bay.

But no amount of padding can stifle the noise of that enormous, sonorous, fabulous V8 powerplant, which dominated the experience like a Stetson-wearing, shotgun-toting Texan in a quiet country pub. The noise fills the car, leaving you luxuriating in a petrol-fuelled bubble bath of thick, syrupy power. When you put your foot down, the automatic gearbox drops a couple of cogs, the whole car rears and the view out of the side windows suddenly gets very blurry. With that engine on board, the Twisted is fast enough to blow fully paid up sports cars into the long grass.

For all that though, it isn’t the easiest car in the world to drive. The throttle is incredibly sensitive when you’re pulling away, and the steering is still a bit vague - not ideal when the car, like all Defenders, feels a bit floaty and wayward, obliging you to constantly correct its course.

But Twisted admits this car isn’t supposed to be a practical daily driver used to take the kids to school or pop to Waitrose. The majority of customers already own several cars, and those that come to Twisted looking to replace a Range

Rover or a BMW X5 are often advised to first buy a car to use every day, then decide whether they want the Twisted as a weekend distraction.

And that really sums up the Twisted ethos.

Fawcett loves Defenders, and though his cars may be more civilised, better equipped, or even faster than the original, they’re definitely still Defenders. If that appeals, then you’ve probably already picked up the phone, but if you just want a comfy, luxurious SUV with the Defender’s rugged image, then you’re looking in the wrong place. May I suggest the Mercedes G-Class?

A VIEW from the VINEYARDS Francesca Lee-Rogers explores the sparkling Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa

I

f I needed another reason to visit Champagne, then the recent opening of the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is it.

Taking the Eurostar from London to Paris, then Paris to Épernay, I’m met at the train station by my chauffeur for the weekend, who informs me it’s just a 15-minute drive to the luxurious five-star hotel. As we near the property, vineyards stripe the hills and we pass charming little villages such as Champillon and Hautvillers of Dom Pérignon fame, of which the majestic hotel looks over, along the way.

Built in the style of a contemporary amphitheatre, incorporating the original 19th-century coaching inn which is said to have been frequented by King Charles X of France, the hotel has been created by local Reims-based architect Giovanni Pace, who is known for his work at the renowned Champagne house, Moët & Chandon. Rather impressively, each of the 49 rooms and suites have spectacular and expansive views of the Champagne valley, meaning that all guests – including myself – can have those pinch-me moments on the terrace or balcony.

Inside, the elegant interiors speak luxury.

The statement chandelier in the lobby by Windfall, from the ‘Eden – Walking in Paradise’ collection, traverses two floors and provides the wow-factor; branches and flowers of grapevines etched onto the walls hark to the hotel’s location; while the use of stone and oak nod to its natural and rural surroundings. Rooms,

meanwhile, have a typical French classic look and feature all the creature comforts including luxury linen, snuggly dressing gowns, sumptuous sofa, free-standing bathtub, rainshower, toiletries from Hermès, Illy coffee machine and Jing teas.

On the first evening I dine in La Bellevue Restaurant. Facing the Marne Valley, it features an expansive terrace which is perfect for the warmer months, but as I visit in late winter, I stay warm indoors and enjoy a pre-dinner fruit cocktail at the table as the sun sets. I peruse the menu – which changes according to the seasons – and has plenty of mouth-watering dishes. For

the starter, I opt for the avocado salad, with black radish shavings, trévise salad, walnuts, spinach shoots and a ginger dressing. It’s a generous portion but is one of the best salads I’ve eaten – the soft avocado is perfectly offset by the crunch of the walnuts and the dressing is pure heaven. I could easily finish the dish but decide to leave room for my main course of beef steak, served with dauphinoise potatoes and a red wine sauce. It’s tasty but a little on the chewy side and I find myself wishing I’d asked for it to be cooked rare rather than medium.

Dessert is a French classic: apple tarte tatin, served with maple syrup, almond and Granny Smith shortbread. I’m happy to report that it doesn’t disappoint as I find myself almost inhaling it; it provides the ultimate finale to a wonderful evening meal.

The next day, I’m back in the restaurant sampling breakfast. I once again gaze at the breathtaking vista outside, while inside I can’t help but notice how immaculate everything is. I order coffee and a continental breakfast – it’s a must – and savour each mouthful. The croissants melt in the mouth and are so delicious that I can overlook the slight delay in service.

Forty-five minutes later, I head to the spa which covers a whopping 1,500 sqm and looks out over the vineyards. Nowhere else can I run on a treadmill while watching the world of

winemaking go by. Nor anywhere else can I feel as though I’m swimming among the vines in a 25-metre indoor pool, which is further accentuated in the outdoor infinity pool.

The jacuzzi, sauna and steam room are just as exclusive, as are the treatments. Having partnered with French group Biologique Recherche, which specialises in natural treatments, I test its three-step facial which starts with a skin analysis, followed by treatment, and finally caring for it to boost the dermal layers to aid regeneration.

Afterwards my skin feels soft to the touch, and even one week on, I’m still glowing.

Nowhere else can I run on a treadmill while watching the world of winemaking go by No trip to Champagne would be complete without a visit to its famous Champagne houses. I shun the more frequented wineries for a private visit to Maison Leclerc Briant, which I arrange through the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa. I learn that the house’s roots go as far back as 1872 and the company has been a pioneer in the field of organic viticulture and biodynamic farming. It is also at the forefront of its game in terms of creativity and experimentation: in the tour of the cellars, I’m shown a 24-carat gold barrel in which a wine is fermenting – but it will be a few more years yet until American owners Mark Nunnelly and Denise Dupré find out the result – while I discover that the brand’s 2013 Leclerc Briant Cuvée Abyss, Brut Zero, spends 15 months ageing in bottles 60 metres under the Atlantic Ocean. Being a little bit of a skeptic, I wonder how much difference such methods make, however the

innovative ideas certainly make the Champagne house stand out from the crowd.

The next day, due to inclement weather I decide against using the hotel’s electric bikes and instead blow away the cobwebs with a 45-minute walk to Hautvillers.

I meander through the winding vineyard paths until I reach the village. Famous for being where Dom Pérignon was born and where he perfected the Champagne method, his tomb also rests in Hautvillers Abbey. It’s well worth a visit, and many of the area’s quaint houses are decorated with beautiful forged iron shop signs, including bakery Chez Poulain, which is worth stopping by for one of its gateaux, and ideal for refuelling for the walk back.

My trip to the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa is almost over and I’ve probably only sampled a quarter of what’s on offer. After all, there’s the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant Le Royal to sample, Champagnes with in-house sommelier Daniel Pires to taste, and excursions to enjoy, including a boat tour on the Marne River or a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards. What else could one want for a truly wonderful bonnes vacances?

After flying into Brussels, it’s just a 30-minute journey on the Intercity Direct train from the Belgian capital to Antwerp’s Central Station.

The railway station – nicknamed the Cathedral of Rail – was constructed between 1895 and 1905, is steeped in history and is considered to be among one of the finest in the world. Located near Queen Astrid Square, the hotel offers 253 rooms and suites, expertly designed by architects Alex Kravetz. I’m treated to some Belgian chocolates on arrival and then head up to my spacious city suite, which overlooks the square to the front of the station. The view is impressive and being a photographer, I can’t

time, it had a broad reach and attracted scientists, artists and major merchants in equal measure. During the 17th century, illustrious painters such as Rubens and Van Dyck settled here, as well as the printers who made the town so renowned. A strategic prize at the centre of many conflicts, from the wars of succession to World War II, Antwerp has always rebuilt itself whilst preserving the historical identity which gives the city its present-day appeal.

After touring the MoMu fashion museum, which is located in the heart of Nationalestraat – the town’s fashion district – there’s an array of shops to keep any esteemed

Once I’ve got some wow-factor shots, I decide to relax by the hotel’s heated pool, before returning to my room to get ready to dine in one of the hotel’s restaurants, Made in Antwerp, where I ponder what to do the next day. Known for using local, fresh ingredients, the menu showcases dishes such as ravioli with truffle, Belgian blue steak and wild boar stew.

THE CITY’S HISTORY

Antwerp was established around the year 900, and grew first and foremost due to its location on the Escaut river, with its port activities. This is where the first trade exchanges came into being and this made it one of Europe’s most significant towns, a status that it held throughout the Middle Ages. At this

Meanwhile, on Le Meir, which is a bit like the ChampsÉlysées by the very fact that it’s an avenue of shops, I found all the typical high street shops including Zara, Uniqlo, and H&M, and whilst there, don’t forget to stop by The Chocolate Line, which is a Belgian institution owing to its delicious chocolates and also its quirkiness.

Finally, wander through the heart of the diamond dealing district, for an afternoon to remember.

FOOD & DRINK

One cannot visit Antwerp without stopping by The Smallest Waffle Shop in the World for a Belgian waffle. I sampled one and can truly say it was delicious! For more substantial meals, there are dining options aplenty, such as restaurants by The Great Market Square, and those by the City Hall and The Cathedral of Our Lady. O

n a bright and beautiful sunny rainbow-laden day, we headed over the Pennines to the Land of the Prince Bishops and to Ramside Hall in County Durham,.We were planning to spend a couple of nights with friends and had chosen this hotel for its reputedly excellent spa and championship golf courses.

The approach to the castellated Hall was a little muddled but we soon found Reception and although our rooms weren’t ready we were able to relax in the lounge with a complimentary cup of tea or coffee. Our room was soon ready, and we were delighted with the comfortable spaciousness it afforded. A complimentary bottle of wine was on ice in our room and ESPA toiletries were waiting in the en suite, add to which, our situation gave us a perfect view of the 18th green. Once we had settled into the room we were ready to explore the hotel.

We’re both gym/swim bunnies so that would be our first port of call. It would be fair to say that the main hotel is a little tired and needs some updating but the Spa, only some five years old, is all you could ever want. The gym didn’t disappoint - all the usual equipment was available in abundance together with a large variety of resistance apparatus.

We’d earned our fun, it was time to go to the pool. Available to all guests the 25 metre pool, always a favourite, was magnificent. The pool complex also has a children’s pool, a sauna and a steam room. Attentive staff unobtrusively tidy lounge beds and replenish towels regularly – a small thing but it all helps to keep the world turning. Spa guests could access an additional pool with water jets of every variety – just great for aching muscles. Fruit and fruit-flavoured water is on tap and, if needs be, a trip to the accessible bar for prosecco does not go amiss.

Later, we were joined by friends at the Rib Room Steakhouse. Managed by Jean Rousselle from the Loire, a charming gentleman, who welcomed us to the Rib Room personally. The extensive menu offered a variety of local produce in both fish and meat dishes; the champions here were the Moulles starter and the Halibut Three Ways main. There was a very comprehensive wine menu which included our all-time favourite wine – Gavi de Gavi.

Ramside Hall Hotel Durham

Offering the perfect blend ofHotel traditional features, luxury accommodation and first-class service, Ramside Hall was the ideal setting for a break in County Durham for Pauline Hannon and Alan Edwards Next day the guys were hot to trot, galloping off to the Golf Academy, intent on being winners. My friend and I had a leisurely breakfast, much later, and then retired to my room to await the show on the 18th hole. For the golfers, the weather was good, and even the promised wind had not materialised! Only one of the two championship courses were open (estate management) but fortunately it was the one Alan had booked to play the Prince Bishop course (6851 yards and par 72).

This course is nicely set-up, and while having lots of apparent surface water, it is fair, with broad fairways and

is actually reasonably forgiving. In fact, Alan came home with the same golf ball he started with – always noteworthy for him!

Some good shots were played, and the round ended happily for Alan with just 2 shots from 18th greenside bunker into the 18th cup, no doubt due in part to the enthusiastic encouragement emanating from the balconies of our green-side rooms. So, the boys were both happy.

Following this, our friends left to enjoy the delights of County Durham. We have been regular visitors to the area over many years, Durham City, Beamish Museum, the Durham Coastline and country parks and reservoirs in abundance. County Durham is one of our most beautiful counties.

Alone again we headed back to the spa complex, naturally! More gym, more swim

then into the spa again. There is a large outside hot tub with fab warm water spouts.

The perfect place to meet people and make new friends. One group of ladies were celebrating the huge birthday of one of their number. Previously they had been kayaking and trail biking, clearly the birthday girl was slowing down! A lovely bunch, they had gathered from all over the country to celebrate Mum’s birthday. On this second visit to the Spa we found an additional sauna which had views overlooking the outdoor hot tub and grounds.

Now, to be fair, it wouldn’t be right and it wouldn’t be proper, if I stayed at this lovely place and didn’t have just one spa treatment.

Leaving Alan to enjoy the delights of the water jets I headed off, prosecco in hand, to the ESPA treatment rooms. I wished for a treatment that would remove 15 years (misspent in my youth) from about my person.

What I got, left me invigorated and refreshed and ready for the evening ahead. Result!

Family, living locally and celebrating a birthday, not so huge, joined us for dinner at the Fusion Restaurant. Within the Spa at Ramside, Fusion offers a Pan Asian menu to delight. The stars this evening were Tempura Prawns and Yellow Thai Curry. A lovely evening was had and we retired feeling relaxed and happy.

When we arrived the front of the hotel was rather plain and dominated by the new spa building but as we were leaving the hotel the front garden area was being filled with petunia tubs and beds to welcome spring and also with rhododendrons for flowering later in the year.

Satisfied and relaxed and still in sunshine, having had a lovely sojourn in this Land of The Prince Bishops we waved farewell to Ramside Hall. www.ramsidehallhotel.co.uk

O

ur journey to Langho was a bleak drizzly drive; however, when we arrived at Northcote, we soon had a smile on our face. We were welcomed by a friendly courteous member of staff who guided us to the bar area where we enjoyed a glass of Louis Roederer Champagne while looking through the food menu.

We had already heard so much about the food at Northcote led by Lisa Goodwin-Allen. Therefore, we opted for the six-course tasting menu along with matching wines in expectation of a true Northcote experience, and not for one second were we disappointed.

We were led from the bar through to the dining room, which was elegant, with a relaxed atmosphere. We were seated at a spacious table for two, and our 3-hour dining experience was about to begin.

Our first dish was the West Coast Crab which was light and refreshing, which worked well with the accompanying flavours of Orchard Apple & Black Radish, this dish set the bar high. We eagerly awaited our second dish, Slow Cooked Copper Maran Egg. The egg was perfectly cooked, and the baked potato flakes created a moreish dish which left us wanting more. Our third dish was the Ox, packed with a rich taste that was neutralised well by the aged sour cream & cucumber pickle dill. The next dish was our favourite of the night the Scarlet Prawn, beautifully presented this was the best prawn dish that I have experienced to date. Our final dish was the Yorkshire duck. A hearty dish, the duck was cooked impeccably with a slight crisp to it. The

smoked bacon, turnip & parsley rounded this dish off and were a satisfying closure to our main dishes.

We were then freshened with a delicate Coconut Lime & Chocolate mousse for our dessert which cleansed the taste buds. With each of our dishes, the professional staff confidently explained what to expect, with pride and passion for the menu that really shone through.

The wines to match were equal in their excellence to the food that they were accompanying and certainly enhanced the experience. The wine which stood out for us was a sparkling wine, the Nyetimber Classic Cuvee from Kent.

Finishing the experience off we chose to have some cheese along with a Port flight. The cheese was wheeled out, and each

cheese was explained in detail before we made our selection.

For us dinning at Northcote ticked all of the boxes: quality, presentation, service and atmosphere. We had entered Northcote with a smile on our faces when leaving Northcote those smiles had only got bigger.

INGREDIENTS STRAWBERRY ESSENCE:

400g Gariguette strawberries, hulled 600g white wine, reduced to 300g 75g sugar 2g basil 2g mint STRAWBERRY PURÉE: 300g strawberry essence 3g agar agar STRAWBERRY MOUSSE: 250g Gariguette strawberries, puréed 25g yoghurt 12.5g lemon juice 60g egg yolk 75g sugar 12.5 cornflour 2.5 leaf gelatine 110g egg white

STRAWBERRY TUILE: 250g Gariguette strawberries 50g isomalt STRAWBERRY SORBET: 500g Gariguette strawberries 50g water 20g caster sugar 20g glucose 8g lemon juice BAKED YOGHURT: 200g natural yoghurt 200g condensed milk 200g double cream 1 leaf of gelatine Seeds from 1 vanilla pod MATCHA GREEN TEA CRUMB: 25g sugar 25g flour 25g ground almonds 25g butter 7.5g matcha green tea powder

strawberries, matcha METHOD Gariguette green tea, baked yoghurt For the strawberry essence Put all the ingredients in a bowl, then cling film and place on top of a pan of boiling water. Cook like this for half an hour. Leave to cool, then pass through a fine cheese cloth to leave a deep red, but clear liquid.

For the strawberry purée Whisk the agar into the essence then bring to the boil, whisking all the time. Pour the contents into a container and place in the fridge. Once set, blend the purée to a fine gel. Place in a piping bag.

For the strawberry mousse Bring the purée, yoghurt and lemon juice to the boil. Whisk together the egg yolk, 25g of sugar and corn flour, then whisk in the hot purée, return to the pan then heat again, whisking till the mix is thick. Add the gelatine. Whisk the egg whites with the remaining sugar until thick and glossy, then pour in the purée. Set in moulds

For the strawberry tuile Blend the strawberries with the isomalt to make a purée. Thinly spread onto a non-stick mat and dry in an oven overnight at 55oc.

For the strawberry sorbet Heat the sugars in the water until melted.

Blend with the strawberries and the lemon juice. Pass through a sieve, then freeze.

For the baked yoghurt Add the vanilla pods to the cream. Then bring to the boil. Take off the heat and pour into the rest of the ingredients. In a suitable container, bake the mix at 70oc for 30 minutes. Chill to set.

For the matcha green tea crumb Cream together the sugar and butter, then add the rest of the ingredients. Roll into a sausage shape, wrap in cling film, then freeze. When frozen, finely grate and bake
