CHAMPIONING JUSTICE AND WELFARE FOR THE PEOPLE Congratulations to Judge Maureen Wood Rockdale County’s New Superior Court District Judge. She started serving as Rockdale County Juvenile Court Judge in 2016. An alumnus of Spellman College, she obtained her Juris Doctorate from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Judge Wood is a Child Welfare Law specialist in the state of Georgia. She is committed to ensuring that all children and families who come through her Court have access to the resources they need for success. Since taking the bench in 2016, Judge Wood implemented two additional Accountability Courts (Family Treatment Court and Mental Health Resource Court). Judge Wood is dedicated to maintaining a youth-centered Court and ensures that all court staff receive training on implicit bias and the effects of trauma on adolescents.

What inspired your journey from engineering into law?

I grew up thinking I would be an engineer. My parents spent much time emphasizing the importance of STEM majors and STEM careers. They invested in sending me to different camps and summer programs oriented towards minorities and engineering minorities in STEM. So, I was set on being a biomedical engineer. I wanted to design different medical devices for people that needed prosthetics. Despite planning to major in biomedical engineering, financial constraints led me to pursue a math major at Spelman. However, I realized math wasn't my passion and switched to a political science minor with the goal of becoming a lawyer. Working in Legal Aid and family law firms ignited my passion for advocating for others during their most challenging times.

With all the different specialties you could have chosen. What drewyoutoChildWelfareLaw? The Child Welfare Law Specialist designation, offered through the National Association of Counsel for Children, is a nationally recognized specialization. To qualify, practitioners must have at least three years of field experience before applying and pass an exam akin to the bar exam but focused on child welfare law.

While this specialization was not introduced in Georgia until around 2009 or 2010, its importance became evident during a conference in Savannah in 2008. At that event, attendees from across the country were preparing for the exam, highlighting its significance in the legal community. Already deeply involved in family law and representing children in neglect and juvenile cases, I saw obtaining this certification as a crucial step in ensuring I could provide the highest level of advocacy for my clients. Despite initial reservations about the investment of time and resources, I ultimately pursued the certification when it became clear that it would solidify my expertise in the field.

Joining a small cohort of specialists in Georgia has provided invaluable opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and leadership within the legal community. It's a distinction that not only demonstrates my commitment to excellence but also positions me as a trusted resource for child welfare issues in the state.

You have been given a powerful gift and position to inspire so many women around the country. How does that make you feel?

I feel immensely fortunate for the support and admiration I receive from others. It's a profound responsibility because people look up to me, particularly as a woman in my profession. This encourages me to consistently exemplify the best qualities of women in the legal field. I take pride in my work ethic, excellence, and commitment to fairness and approachability. I aim for every encounter to leave a positive impression, reflecting my dedication and sincerity. This recognition is a blessing that I deeply appreciate, knowing the significance and legacy it represents. It's essential to remain mindful of the path paved by those who came before me and to never take this privilege for granted.

Judge Constance Baker Motley was the first African American female federal judge. What are some of the pressures you face as a female judge?

As a woman running for Superior Court Judge, I often encounter skepticism about my ability to make tough decisions, especially in male-dominated fields. Critics question whether I'll be "soft on crime" or have the resolve to make difficult judgments. What they fail to understand is the complexity of the decisions judges face daily. It's not about being tough or soft; it's about following sentencing guidelines and ensuring justice is served. One of the most challenging aspects of my role is deciding whether to terminate parental rights. This isn't just a legal decision; it's a moral one. While sentencing a criminal may seem straightforward, severing the bond between a parent and child is profound—it's the civil death penalty.

Many parents I encounter deeply love their children, but their issues, like mental health or substance abuse, prevent them from providing a safe environment. These cases require careful consideration of complex family dynamics and legal frameworks. The notion that women are incapable of making tough decisions is outdated and absurd. Yet, such biases persist. Despite this, we must persevere, do our jobs with integrity, and challenge stereotypes through our actions.

How can you, as a judge, address the racial bias and economic injustice present in our court system?

Addressing racial biases and economic injustices in the court system is complex. In our juvenile Court, we're part of an initiative called JDAI, examining the entire system, including schools, law enforcement, and community services. Many youths enter the court system due to incidents at school or interactions with law enforcement, often tied to economic circumstances. We analyze factors like law enforcement presence in certain communities and school resource officers' approaches to preventing the school-to-prison pipeline. Comprehensive training through initiatives like JDAI helps us identify and address biases and understand how young people enter the legal system.

Community policing initiatives, like those in Conyers, build positive relationships between law enforcement and residents, reducing reliance on law enforcement solely for incident response. Training and awareness are crucial in combatting systemic biases and ensuring fair treatment for all involved in the legal system.

As the new Superior Court Judge of Rockdale County, what motivated you to run for this position?

The turnover rate in Superior Courts across the state, including Rockdale County, is notably low, with the last contested race dating back to 2012. Recognizing the significance of this opportunity, especially with Judge Mumford's retirement, I saw a chance to make a long-lasting impact. Superior Court judges often serve for a decade or more, presenting a rare opportunity to effect substantial change and influence countless lives. My extensive experience in juvenile Court has equipped me with the necessary skills and understanding of the issues the Superior Court handles daily, from family law to felony criminal matters. One aspect of the Superior Court that particularly interests me is the potential to enhance accountability courts. In juvenile Court, I've successfully implemented and managed three accountability courts, with two recognized as model courts for their best practices. This demonstrates my commitment to using innovative approaches to achieve positive outcomes for our community. By bringing this expertise to the Superior Court, I aim to ensure that all residents receive the best possible access to justice. Already existing accountability courts in the Superior Court, such as the felony drug treatment and mental health courts, present immediate opportunities for me to contribute positively from day one. I'm eager to continue serving our community and leveraging my experience to make a difference in Superior Court, just as I have in juvenile Court over the past seven years. I firmly believe that now is the time to step up and further contribute to the betterment of our community.

The Grace of Second Chances Deon 'DRob' Robertson has gained recognition for his roles in "Misguided Behavior" (2017), "My Son (Sun)," and "My Son (Sun)." He frequently appears on The Kountry Wayne Series and has starred in 10 films available on Amazon Prime, Tubi, as well as 2 on BET Plus.

You have been recognized for roles in "Misguided Behavior" (2017), "My Son (Sun)," The Kountry Wayne Series, and other films available on various platforms. What inspired you to pursue acting?

I never planned on experiencing a hack. Leaving Detroit in 2011 was a turning point for me. It shifted my life. Overcoming legal troubles related to drug charges was pivotal. Upon settling down elsewhere, I started working for a company called Two Minutes. Then, about a year later, I found myself praying for direction, for a passion to pursue wholeheartedly, regardless of the financial outcome. That's when Sharon, who later became like a big sister to me (may she rest in peace), introduced me to the world of acting. She randomly asked if I wanted to audition for a pilot episode being produced by Anthony Brown, her ex. I was taken aback initially, wondering how she could pull it off. But she revealed that she was the CEO of Studio 11 Films, and I agreed to give it a shot. The pilot went well, starring alongside comedian Danny Brown, and he connected me with Rodney Perry in Atlanta. From there, it's been an incredible journey, all thanks to the guidance I had prayed for.

Do you find it hard to be Christian and Hollywood?

I've found that staying true to my beliefs can be quite challenging at times. Initially, adapting to a more grounded lifestyle was difficult, given our previous wild and chaotic ways.

However, this year, I've really come to realize the importance of focusing on what God has blessed me with amidst all the chaos. It's reached a point where I must decide which path to follow wholeheartedly. You can't keep straddling the fence forever; it's either Him or me. This year has been a resolution for me, a commitment to fully embrace His path. It's about shifting my focus and maintaining discipline and obedience.

How does receiving the Presidential Award or Recognition Achievement Award make you feel about your contribution to the legacy of African American actors?

Well, this is a pleasure. I've always been someone who loves to give back. Shout out to Nicola Mitchell, also known as Nicola Michaud, who started the foundation "Girls Who Brunch" about seven or eight years ago. I met her, and she asked me to help with their celebrity basketball game. I ended up coaching the game, which we have every year.

This organization supports girls who are lost or in need of help and motivation, ranging in age from six to their teens. Having an 11-year-old daughter myself, I felt compelled to get involved and support the community. I've spoken at events, participated in various activities for the kids, played Santa Claus every year to hand out toys, and generally helped out in any way Nicola needed. My involvement with "Girls Who Brunch" led to my nomination for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

The cost pursuing you and pulling out your vision. And you know, when you're trying to pull it all together, who has been your biggest support systems throughout your journey?

Throughout my journey, I'd have to say my mom played a significant role. My grandfather passed away in 2011, and she really instilled a lot in me and believed in me, even when I was making wild decisions and navigating various industries. She always had my back and was a praying woman. Another cornerstone in my life has been my wife, Latasha Robinson.

She has stood by me through everything over the years, being my backbone. My children, my daughter and my son, are remarkable as well. They know how to lift me up when I'm down and have a way of teaching me just as much as I teach them. They take the lessons I share with them and turn them around to support me when I need it most. They truly are my backbone.

What is next?

Next, I have a podcast that I'm working on. It's going to be a movie critic podcast, similar to Siskel and Ebert, but with a unique twist that incorporates God into the discussions. I want to highlight the presence of God in every movie, even in the most violent ones, because His influence can be found everywhere. This podcast is one of my current projects. We'll break down movies bit by bit, discussing all the elements and how they relate to faith and spirituality. Additionally, I plan to get more involved in directing films and producing more content. This is another area I'm passionate about and excited to explore further.

ON THE BLACKSIDE DEAR BLACK PEOPLE CONTRIBUTING WRITER VERNICE COOPER Vernice Cooper is a dynamic motivational speaker, consultant, awardwinning author, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is determined to use her education and experience to inspire, motivate, and transform lives.

Everyone deserves and needs mental wellness! It's time to move beyond the notion that therapy is only for or about white people. Black people must have access to mental health resources that resonate with our culture and recognize our history. We must prioritize Mental (Well)ness within the Black culture to create a true sense of safety, security, and community.

Systemic Distrust

The long-standing effects of systemic racism and discrimination in the U.S. have created a deep mistrust of government programs, institutions, and services – including psychotherapy - within the black community. This issue must be addressed to ensure everyone can access mental health care. Black folks have often been overlooked in the world of therapy and mental health treatments. However, this doesn't mean we don't need them or won't benefit from them—it just means that Black communities must work diligently to find Black professionals with whom they can identify and connect.

Healing is an important part of our journey as Black people, and seeking therapy is one way to move past stereotypes surrounding Black people and mental wellness.

Perspective Therapy is a powerful tool for self-discovery and growth, offering invaluable new perspectives to aid in making wiser decisions. It's easy to get caught up in our own echo chambers - be it with people we know personally or on social media – but therapy provides an oasis of clarity where impartial insight can help us reach a higher standard of living—speaking of echo chambers, who are the five most influential people in your life, online or otherwise? How do they positively (or negatively) impact your headspace? This is important to evaluate regularly as you increase your emotional intelligence.

3 Signs why you DON'T need therapy: You easily forgive people who are NOT sorry. Forgiveness reduces the likelihood of building resentment and improves overall mental and physical health. This is truly an indicator that you are well on your way to emotional wellness and healing.

You've never been betrayed. People whom another human being has never betrayed may not need therapy because they don't have trouble with setting boundaries or establishing trust.

All of your relationships are in "good standing" You may not be a good candidate for therapy if all of your relationships are in good standing. It means you don't suffer from grief and loss, you don't experience relational disappointment, and you have few reasons to be angry with others.

Now that I've excluded the folks that don't need therapy, I hope to see the rest of you on the couch, djacent to a clinical professional, healing, processing, and growing.

Alzheimer's Care Givers I worked as a master's prepared Social Worker in many fields, including Geriatrics. In addition to my work-related experience, I was the lone caregiver for my mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's. Thankfully, my son and cousin joined me during the last years of a sixteen-year journey. While working in a Senior Health Care Center, I developed and facilitated, along with a Registered nurse, in an Alzheimer's Caregivers support group. During the nurse's career, she cared for patients troubled by memory loss. In addition to her professional experience, my co-facilitator was also involved in the care of three family members who suffered from Dementia. My job description also allowed me to counsel providers overwhelmed with the responsibilities and stress of their daunting tasks. My level of involvement leads me to believe that caregiving can be a terminal condition. Those called to attend to others full-time often place the patient's needs above all else, including their well-being. I sacrificed my career, my home, and ultimately my health to provide for my mother because I saw no other choice. During my tenure in the medical field, I witnessed caregivers who surrendered much more than I did, with some giving their lives. Yes, it is not unusual to see the patient bury their caregiver. This is a drastic but realistic fact.

Because of my observations, I am committed to giving the caregiver a voice and assisting these heroic persons in permitting themselves to indulge in self-care regularly. This blog aims to share some of my experiences, and I hope some of you will do the same. I want to speak about the importance of self-care, give some recommendations on how the quest for self-care may be achieved, and dive into the importance of finding support. But first, I will offer some suggestions for an official diagnosis. Symptoms of Dementia include memory loss, declining motor function, disorientation, changing behavior, apparent cognitive decline, as well as other factors. However, these warning signs may also be manifested in other medical or emotional conditions. Before assuming your loved one has Alzheimer's or some other form of Dementia, please encourage your relative to have a complete physical. My mother had been widowed shortly before she demonstrated a number of the aforementioned behaviors as well as Anorexia.

Although I assumed she had developed Alzheimer's, her doctor ruled out grieving, clinical depression, and malnutrition before he considered a diagnosis of Dementia. He then referred her to a neurologist who ran a battery of written and verbal tests and ordered an MRI. It was only after having the results of all testing that the verdict I feared was delivered.

Upon receiving the test results from the neurologist, her primary care physician prescribed medication that would possibly slow the progression of the disease, ordered home health, and made numerous other recommendations. We know our relatives better than others, but most are not health professionals. If you have a medical background, you know that attempting to diagnose or treat a close relative is ill-advised. Get that complete physical done as soon as possible.

NIKKI ANTHONY

Award-winning Author Nikki T. Anthony is the writer behind the highly anticipated Young Adult novel, The Price We Pay, which has been coined by critics as the ultimate modern-day Black experience. Not only is she a multi-faceted author, she's also a serial entrepreneur who transformed from a Corporate Technical Writer to a highly sought-after Ghostwriter, Literary Consultant, and Content Developer.

Her writings are best known for their epic plot twist, enthralling language, and richly detailed African American characters, who are dominant to their narratives.

What was the moment you realized your dream was to become a writer?

I'll be honest about the moment I realized I wanted to be a writer. It happened when I was a teenager. I've always been transparent about this: I was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, where everything was very segregated. We didn't have many resources; the South Side looked very different from the North Side and downtown Chicago. My grandmother and I lived in a project, and she didn't have much money or many resources. She did the best she could with what we had. I would often go to the public library across the street from where I lived and read books for eight or nine hours a day. Sitting in that library, I immersed myself in different worlds, escaping the poverty of my environment. Through reading, I experienced realms I felt I would never see due to my circumstances. It was in those moments that I realized I wanted to create these kinds of worlds for others. I wanted to help people escape, just as I had. At around 15 years old, I decided to try my hand at writing. I wrote about three pages and, in my excitement, told the whole story in those few pages. It wasn't quite right, but that early attempt was important. Later, I picked up writing again and continued pursuing my dream. That's what counts.

Being a Black woman who can write is powerful. What does that power mean to you?

It means a lot, honestly. Being a Black woman who can write holds immense significance for me because I write about our struggles and experiences, things that I know intimately. Often, I receive feedback from readers who find certain aspects of my stories unbelievable or unrealistic, questioning how a child could be treated a certain way or how a character could possess such negative traits. But the reality is, these are the struggles Black people face. This is our lived experience. Writing about these truths is empowering because it means I am not ashamed of where I come from. I am not ashamed of the struggles that have shaped me, made me strong, and contributed to who I am today. For me, it's about staying true to our narrative, our characters, and our culture. This authenticity is crucial, even if some people cannot relate to or understand. When they dismiss my stories as unrealistic, it only highlights their lack of awareness about the realities we live. To me, if my writing evokes such strong reactions, it means it's doing its job. It’s shedding light on our experiences, making readers confront truths they might not otherwise face, and giving voice to our stories in a way that demands recognition and respect.

What aspect of your writing and storytelling skills intrigues youthemost?

That I'm able to depict realistic scenarios in my writing. While many of us share common experiences as Black individuals, not everyone faces the same struggles. Despite our shared racial identity, our lives can be vastly different. So, being able to vividly portray settings—whether they're real or fictional— to someone who hasn't experienced them firsthand is a skill I value deeply. Describing details like the sights, sounds, and smells allows readers to immerse themselves fully in the story. It's this descriptive ability that sets my writing apart, enabling readers to say, "Wow, I can picture the location vividly, see the characters walking down the street, and even sense the aromas wafting from the houses.

Which writers have influenced you on your journey as a writer,andwhy?

My favorite author is Terry McMillan. I remember one of the first books I read by her was "Disappearing Act." I loved that book not just because I read it front to back around 47 times, even though I practically knew it by heart. It was because of the character she created. Despite coming from different worlds, the main character didn't look down on or treat the other character differently, despite him not having the same opportunities. This resonated with me deeply at that time in my life. I felt like I needed someone to see the good in me, to meet me where I was. Terry McMillan played a pivotal role for me during that period. Her stories, like "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," spoke to me because they felt relatable. Growing up in the projects in Chicago, these were the hood stories that I could connect with. Authors like Eric Jerome Dickey and Toni Morrison have also had a significant influence on me. Their classic works paved the way and inspired me to pursue my own creativity with courage

"The Price We Pay" is told from the perspective of a 50-yearold Black teenager who undergoes a series of deliberate attacks against herself, her family, and her loved ones. As she navigates through these experiences, she begins to lose faith in humanity. The inspiration behind this project stems from witnessing real-life events portrayed in the media, particularly incidents involving Black youth like Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin. These events were deeply triggering, and even though George Floyd's case was different in nature, its chilling timeliness resonated with me. The project aims to shed light on issues such as racism, police brutality, and inequality, which often go unheard or unaddressed.

Many individuals, especially Black youth, feel silenced and afraid to speak out due to fear of repercussions. Through this project, I wanted to amplify their voices and experiences, highlighting the struggles they face on a daily basis.

Conversations with my own teenage children further fueled my determination to tackle these themes. Seeing the world through their eyes and understanding their concerns reinforced the importance of addressing these issues in the project. Ultimately, "The Price We Pay" seeks to give a voice to those who are suffering the most and to spark conversations that promote understanding, empathy, and positive change.

As an African American author, receiving the Literary Titan Gold Book Award for "The Price We Pay" is a significant accomplishment. How does it feel to be recognized as one of thebestcontributorstotheAfricanAmericanliterarylegacy?

Receiving the Literary Titan Gold Book Award for "The Price We Pay" made me feel like I was playing a small part as a change agent. When I found out about the award, I was thrilled, and there was a moment of celebration. However, I quickly acknowledged that I don't accomplish this alone— it's a team effort involving my publishing team and many others. Like gears in an engine, we work together to keep things moving forward. While it's important to celebrate milestones, it's also essential to stay focused and keep working towards our goals. The award served as reassurance that we're on the right path and motivated us to continue making a positive impact through our work.

How would you describe your growth as a writer over the years?

Transitioning from independent to traditionally published has been a significant learning curve for me as a writer.

Initially, I believed I had a good handle on my craft, but entering the traditional publishing realm revealed new layers of challenge and growth. Working with a team of editors, I realized there was much more to learn and refine. Despite going through nine rounds of revisions, each with its own team of editors, I had to confront feelings of inadequacy and set aside my ego. It was a humbling experience, but it pushed me to dig deeper and discover capabilities within myself that I didn't know existed. Embracing constructive criticism and feedback was crucial for my growth. Whereas I might have been sensitive to criticism in the past, I approached it with a newfound maturity and determination to improve. Even when faced with daunting tasks, like revising 30 pages of content, I tackled them head-on, driven by a desire to prove my capabilities. The satisfaction of overcoming such challenges and earning recognition for my efforts reaffirmed my growth as a writer. This journey has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning and improvement in my craft.

What advice would you offer aspiring authors who are transitioning into the business side of writing, especially those aiming to become independent and sign their own deals?

The most crucial advice I can offer aspiring authors is to recognize that you can't do everything alone. When you have the gift of creation, that's where your focus should lie. Outsource tasks like editing, formatting, and marketing as much as possible. Nowadays, there are numerous resources available for outsourcing these services, which may not have been as accessible ten years ago. While it may seem daunting at first, investing in quality services is essential. You may not be able to afford a $2,000 editor initially, but remember that you get what you pay for. Putting out a book riddled with errors due to low-cost editing can harm your reputation as an author. It's crucial to prioritize quality over costcutting measures. Don't fall into the trap of cutting corners or compromising on quality to save money.

Sacrifice other expenses if necessary to invest in your dream. You might spend $100 or more on a family outing or entertainment without a second thought, but investing that money in your book is an investment in your legacy. You can afford it if you prioritize your goals and dreams over temporary indulgences. Don't eat away at your legacy; invest in it.

What are your plans for the future, and what can readers expect from Nikki Anthony in terms of your career and brand moving forward?

One significant project I'm currently working on is my second novel. Additionally, I'm in the process of launching an organization focused on empowering young adult girls. The mission is simple: to help these girls transform their dreams into actionable plans and navigate through life's challenges together. This initiative, called "Girls Like Me Too," aims to provide a supportive community where girls can feel safe, inspired, and connected. Through youth outreach programs, book clubs, and creating a safe haven for them, we'll foster a sisterhood where they can access mentorship, guidance, and support from peers who understand their experiences. As someone who once faced similar struggles, I want to provide these girls with the resources and encouragement they need to succeed. As an author, serial entrepreneur, and philanthropist, Kenni operates under her mantra of 'making a difference and not just a dollar'. Reflecting back to 2008, what was the moment that inspired you to to put pen to paper and write your first book?

I want to call it a mistake, but I've had a long tenure in this game. So, it wasn't a mistake, but it started as a homework assignment. While I was in college, I minored in creative writing. It was the feedback that I got from my instructor, who said that it read like the beginning of a novel. So I took that to mean that you could do something with this. I always knew I had a gift. I always had a passion for the written word, but having someone else validate it sparked something in me. During that time, I was getting ready to graduate and pregnant—my first kid. I'm like, wait a minute, I'm fine. My second kid, I'm like, wait a minute, I can do something with this. Let me make it happen, and I did. I wrote it out. It became my first novel, and I haven't looked back

What does that power mean to you?

What I find most intriguing about my writing and storytelling is my ability to work across diverse mediums. The first thing I would change is the camaraderie within the industry. I wish it were more welcoming.

When I was starting out, it often felt like the veterans were reluctant to share their wisdom or offer guidance to newcomers. That "crabs in a barrel" mentality has never benefited anyone and has been discouraging for many authors as they embark on their journey. Another change I would make is to encourage more creativity and out-of-the-box thinking. Too often, people follow trends—what I call "popcorn fiction." While it might be popular at the moment and yield some quick ebook sales, it's important to think about longevity and legacy.

Consider what you want to see on the sales shelf ten years from now, not just what's trending this month.

What advice would you give new and upcoming authors that are trying to Self Publish, and those that are trying to be signed?

To those trying to get signed, my advice is to start by being yourself. If you have to go the self-publishing route initially, that's perfectly fine. You never know who is watching. Publishers are paying attention to your work ethic, social media presence, content, and overall persona. Keep doing what you're doing, and what is destined for you will come. Have I grabbed your attention? Well, there is some truth to the title because, for many independent writers and filmmakers, Tubi provides a platform for many to turn their dreams into feature film realities.

In the last four years, Tubi entered the scene and quietly built a catalog of black independent films, and this was needed, especially if you were a viewer tired of the typical Netflix and chill. In contrast, Tubi showed movies with people of color from all over. Some were natural, and others needed a few acting classes, but they had a story to tell. Tubi gave them a platform when others treated the film industry like a gated community where only the elite were allowed entrance.

Tubi showcases diverse talent combined with the programming of 40,000 films and television series from over 250 providers, including Fox and its affiliates, with over 65 million monthly active users.

Tubi has become the home to a lot of actors and actresses who have become fan favorites, such as Jamal Woolard, Mena Monroe, Murda Pain, Kaamal Hasaun, Crystal the Doll, Shelby Leigh, Demaris Harvey, and Markeiva Albritten. These once unknowns have become very familiar, and viewers will agree if Tubi movies do not star those mentioned, they must not be good movies.

Enter the plot twist as the beautiful and talented Mena Monroe steps from in front of the camera to behind it and writes and directs her film If I Can't. The film becomes the most popular movie on the Tubi (men and women lie, but numbers don't) but also brings actor Tristan Fazekas to becoming the most hated man on Tubi for his role as Scott. Popularity for an indie film was significant, especially for a female in a male-dominated industry. If this is just the beginning, the future looks very bright for Monroe and others like her who wanted to get their films in front of an audience; thanks to Tubi, she got 65 million. Salute!

I watch a lot of Tubi; personally speaking, my film dreams became a reality as I have two films currently streaming on Tubi, Coke Queen, and The Last Bet, so I, too, am proof that hard work and resilience pay off, but that wasn't my first time working on a film as I worked a co-editor, and proofer for Tabari Sturdivant's Love Karma currently streaming on digital platforms. Not only is Tubi supporting the indie film scene but is a massive supporter of series too, as independent filmmaker Silk White has found success with his Black Excellence series as well as his latest blockbuster, All I Want Is You, starring Claudia Jordan, Crystal the Doll along with another Tubi fan-favorite, Lemastor Spratling that tells of a woman who is willing to risk it all when another woman tries to take her man.

Fans raved all over social media as they eagerly awaited the sequel. And, of course, once a person enjoys your film, it piques their curiosity to check out other movies by the filmmaker. White is not a one-trick pony as before cinema; he was a bestselling author from NYC who transitioned from books to film with his series The Transporter and It's Lonely At the Top along with New York Times Best Selling Authors, Nikki Turner's On Da Run, Tressa "Azarel" Smallwood of MegaMind Media with the release of All In and The Available Wife, and Jaquavis Coleman's; Everything Is Both to name a few.

The creativity and quick production undoubtedly make Tubi a force to be reckoned with. Initially, people heard Tubi and thought it was low-budget, but lately, that has changed as the quality of films and series has improved. The Dirty D series has a huge following, and Chris Stokes and Marques Houston are leaving their film footprints with the success of The Assistant, Best Friend, No Way Out, and The Stepmother franchise while finding the perfect place for reality star turn-actress Erica Mena, who has mastered the art of playing crazy and psychotic.

Tubi is legit with accompanying hashtags, memes, and Facebook Groups to support movies and dislike for some with complaints stemming from bad wigs, makeup, baby hair, and BBL's gone wrong, who should star in the next Tubi film and more, but one thing for sure is that they are watching, and that is all that matters.

Even when we know that our path is uniquely paved for us, there's still that fear of stepping out and doing something outside of our comfort zone. What was the moment that pushed you to take the leap into writing?

I had to overcome a lot to reach that pivotal moment.

I was one of those people who didn't believe I could achieve the things I'm doing now. I was going through significant personal challenges, including divorce and everything else life threw at me before I found that breakthrough moment. It literally came to me in a dream. I woke up with a vision and decided to bring it to life, hoping it would lead to something great. I just kept pushing forward. Honestly, I'm unsure how to manage it because my life is constantly busy. I've come to suspect that I might have a touch of adult ADHD because I'm always driven by new ideas.

Whenever I see something inspiring, whether on a billboard or anywhere else, I think, "That's a great idea," and I run with it. I'm driven by impulse and the constant desire to create and achieve.

You've achieved so much in literature, and as a powerful Black woman writer, your impact is significant. What does the power of your voice and representation in literature mean to you?

It means a lot to me, and I strive for perfection because that power can empower other women. However, it can also alienate people if not handled carefully. So, being mindful of what and how you write is essential. You want people to gain something positive from it, not leave disappointed or defeated. I take great pride in that power and use it to empower other women to the best of my ability.

What intrigues you the most about your writing style?

I'm what's considered a pantser—I write by the seat of my pants. I'm always intrigued by how I can develop stories without any outline or preconceived ideas. I often start with just a title and let the story unfold.

Seeing the end product and what I've created purely from spontaneous inspiration is fascinating.

When you're creating, how does your creativity flow? As a pastor, what drives your creativity outside of that role, allowing it to flourish and push through?

I need to feel inspired at that moment when it comes to writing. To spark this inspiration, I often turn to books by other authors. I'll read a few pages from a work by writers like Victoria Christopher Murray or Zane. Sometimes, I'll look to thriller and suspense authors like James Patterson for that extra creativity kick. After reading a few lines, I underline key phrases and take notes. This process helps me gather my thoughts and gets me ready to write.

Now, you named some of the writers you love to go to for inspiration, but which writers have influenced you the most in your journey to continue writing?

James Patterson is definitely one of the greatest. I started reading his books even at an early age. Kimberla Lawson Roby is another major influence; I've read her books for about 20 years. She's definitely an inspiration. Victoria Christopher Murray is also a key figure for me—not only do I enjoy her writing, but she also helped me with the editing process of one of my books, and I even took one of her editing classes. These three authors—Patterson, Roby, and Murray—are the main ones who keep me intrigued about writing. They continually make strides in their careers, branching out into film and other ventures, and it's fascinating to watch their growth. I hope to follow in their footsteps.

You have your 2024 next issue of The Heatseekers getting ready to release.

Can you tell us a bit about your magazine and what inspires its content?

You're a very accomplished author, host,playwright,andmediamogul.Can you tell us a little bit about Teresa B.Production?

I've been a music lover all my life. I used to sing when I was younger and always aspired to be a singer, but that didn't happen. Instead, I became a writer. Knowing the industry and some of the people in it, I had someone from Sony Orchard encourage me to write about music, which gave me the inspiration to start the magazine. I thought I could do it because I knew many people in the industry through friends, but I never imagined they would give me the opportunity to interview them.COVID-19 was both a blessing and a curse in this regard. Since everyone was at home and not busy, it became easier to connect and make friends within the industry.

That's how the concept for The Heatseekers came about. We aim to interview people in the music industry, regardless of genre, spanning from the 1970s to today. For instance, Kurtis Blow, who came out in 1977, was one of our interviewees, and we even have someone from the late 1950s lined up for the cover. Right now, we're covering all walks of life in music, focusing on their impact rather than when they started.

I want readers to gain a real understanding of the music industry.

Often, when people in the industry are no longer in the spotlight, they get forgotten. My goal is to ensure these artists stay relevant and that their current accomplishments and achievements are celebrated. I also want readers to come away with a deeper understanding of the music industry than they had before
