A Message From Dr. Filipiak Dear Lisle District 202 Community Members, On behalf of Lisle District 202 and the Board of Education, I would like to offer my sincere appreciation to our learning community. The past several months have been filled with uncertainty and for many, uneasiness, but our community has come together as we have so many times before to support each other and the children of Lisle.

There is no doubt that these unprecedented times have required our approach to instruction and education to shift in unexpected ways; however, with change comes opportunities to challenge ourselves, to develop new perspectives, and to pave new paths into uncharted territory. Because of the circumstances of the pandemic, we are now engaging in virtual learning environments and activities that were once considered “untraditional,� but are now necessary to continue to provide robust learning experiences. We are also exploring and implementing new technologies to increase access for our students and creating new ways to connect and engage with our students within virtual learning spaces. While change in our current situation has been uncomfortable, I have seen the innovative bi-products that are indeed resulting in progress for the range of educational opportunities we offer our students.

Despite the challenges, we believe it is important to continue to celebrate the many accomplishments of our students and staff. We are extremely proud of the hard work, dedication, creativity, and commitment to excellence that continues to be a hallmark of Lisle 202. In this Report to the Community, we provide a glimpse of our school district and how students are engaging in their learning within the unique context of this school year.

Celebrations & News Mrs. Park Named the Illinois South Suburbs Regional Teacher of the Year Lisle District 202 is #LionProud of Mrs. Aimee Park! Mrs. Park was named the Illinois South Suburbs Regional Teacher of the Year. She is one of ten teachers honored in regions across the state.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Carmen I. Ayala, “Receiving a Teacher of the Year award has taken on new meaning in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our educators have surmounted radical shifts in how they teach and connect with students.

Illinois’ Teachers of the Year helped to lead their communities through crisis. They shine as beacons of hope and stability in the lives of Illinois students and families. They went to extraordinary lengths to care for the mental, physical, as well as academic, well-being of their students. I thank and congratulate each educator for their incredible service.”

Mrs. Park has taught Science at Lisle Junior High School for 18 years. LJHS Principal Dave Kearney said, “We are very proud of Aimee. Her dedication to her students and her love of teaching is an asset to Lisle Junior High School.”

Superintendent Dr. Keith Filipiak said, “Aimee’s enthusiasm is contagious from the moment you step into her classroom. We are very proud of Aimee’s accomplishment and are fortunate that she is here to share her talents and passion for science with the students at Lisle Junior High School.”

Lisle Junior High and Lisle High School French Students Rank in National Competition Lisle Junior High School’s Class of 2020 8th grade French 1 class and Lisle High School’s 2020 French 2 & 3 classes competed in Le Grand Concours in the Spring of 2020. Le Grand Concours is a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French and consists of an online exam that evaluates each student on his/her listening and reading comprehension skills in French.

Junior High: French 1 Nearly 16,500 students in all 50 states competed in the 2020 Level 1 contest. Eleven students from Lisle Junior High have been recognized for their achievement: one gold medal, two silver medals, two bronze medals, and six honorary mentions.

High School: French 2 & 3 Over 30,000 students in all 50 states competed in the Level 2 & 3 contests this year. Ten students from Lisle High School have been recognized for their achievement: two silver medals, and eight honorary mentions.

Celebrations & News Lisle High School Students Recognized by the National Merit Scholars Program Every fall, over 1.5 million of the most academically accomplished juniors in the nation participate in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). As a result of their achievement and success on this test, Lisle Seniors Cassidy A. and Sean M. were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Commended Students. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied selection index score which measures critical reading, mathematics and writing skills. This places these seniors among the top 34,000 highest scorers nationwide.

Another Lisle Senior, Jay M., was recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as a National Semifinalist. This places Jay amongst the top 16,000 highest scores nationwide and allows him to continue on in the scholarship competition to potentially be a National Merit Finalist.

Board of Education Waives School Fees for the 2020-2021 School Year The Lisle 202 Board of Education recognizes the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our community as a whole and many families in our learning community. In light of the economic conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Education approved the suspension of school registration fees for all grade levels for the 2020-2021 school year. The fee waiver covers the supply and book fees.

Lisle 202 Facilities Update Lisle 202 agreed to sell Tate Woods School to Kindi Academy for $2,555,000, contingent upon obtaining the required zoning approval from the Village of Lisle.

Based on the current anticipated timeline, the sale is projected to close by May 30, 2021 with occupancy by the new owner for the 2021/2022 school year.

Chesterton Academy has leased the eastern portion of Schiesher Elementary School for $108,000 per year plus utilities since the fall of 2019. The Board of Education intends to extend the lease for two additional years while the District’s Facility Master Planning Committee evaluates the future of the site and facility.

Supporting Students Across Learning Platforms Although technology has long been a large part of our educational interactions, these unique times have prompted innovation and exploration in the way we teach and learn together with the increased reliance on technology in the virtual learning environment. Our teachers have found new and interesting ways to deliver curriculum and connect with students via technology platforms. Whether engaging through new online applications, or working with new features in familiar platforms, our students and teachers are building knowledge and relationships every day.

App Spotlight Our students and teachers interact with each other and with the curriculum via a variety of online platforms. Here are some of the most frequently used applications.

Google Classroom Google Classroom is an online learning platform that allows students to engage in an online class, participate in interactive discussions, complete assignments, and review grades.

Google Meet Google Meet is an online meeting tool for video conferences used Districtwide that utilizes the camera and microphone on the computer or mobile device to connect students and teachers in a virtual conversation.

Pear Deck Pear Deck allows students to engage in hands-on, interactive lessons with their teachers. Teachers can design learning experiences for their students and provide immediate feedback.

There are three main instructional delivery methods being used during the 2020-2021 school year:

Concurrent Learning Concurrent Learning allows students in-person and online to simultaneously participate in direct instruction with the teacher and engage in classroom discussions through the use of dedicated classroom webcams and microphones.

Synchronous Learning During Synchronous Learning, teachers engage students online through live direct teaching and guide students in learning activities in a virtual environment.

Asynchronous Learning During Asynchronous Learning, students complete assignments independently online. Asynchronous learning is often paired with synchronous or concurrent learning.

It is also the primary delivery method for the fully online program at Lisle High School.

2020-2021 Return to School Learning Options The well-being of our students and staff while providing a dynamic learning experience is the primary focus for Lisle District 202. We believe we are as prepared as possible based on current information, but we also recognize that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve and we may need to make adjustments as the school year passes to ensure our learning environments support growth while following safety protocols as they are updated.

The Lisle 202 Return to School Plan was developed based on current health and safety guidelines and offers three types of learning options during the 2020-2021 school year depending on the health conditions in our community, zip code, and county.

In-Person Learning

Lisle Virtual Academy

Remote Learning for All

Students who opt to attend school in-person participate in instruction according to a modified schedule when health conditions permit.

Additional health and safety precautions including wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and increased cleaning routines are implemented throughout the day. On days when students are not physically in the school building, they participate in online and concurrent instruction.

Students in grades K-12 may opt to attend school fully online. Content is developed and taught by Lisle 202 teachers for grades K-8.

In grades 9-12, content is delivered through an online service called Edgenuity. All Lisle Virtual Academy content aligns with State Standards.

Remote Learning for All is the temporary learning plan for all Lisle 202 students in the event that a fully-remote environment is necessary.

This learning program is provided by Lisle 202 staff and incorporates both liveteaching (synchronous) and independent learning opportunities and schedules (asynchronous) to replicate the in-person learning experience as much as possible. Families who plan to return to in-person attendance when health conditions permit are placed in the Remote Learning for All option.
