MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY Dear Lisle District 202 Community Members, The Lisle District 202 Learning Community is truly an exceptional group of students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members. The collective effort to ensure all our students receive a successful academic experience is evident through daily interactions with our students both inside and outside our classrooms. We are proud of our learning community, the collaborative efforts, and the ongoing commitment to provide a wide array of valuable experiences.

In this Quarterly Report, we provide a glimpse of our school district and information on student assessment. We also highlight the grand opening of the new Lisle Elementary School, the National recognition of one of our teachers, and provide an overview of the District’s finances.

The Board of Education, teachers, staff, parents, and community are strong partners in continuing the long-standing tradition of excellence in Lisle District 202. We appreciate your support and commitment to our students and schools, and are proud to share the many achievements of our student body, the dedicated teachers, and staff of Lisle District 202.

LISLE ELEMENTARY OPENS FOR LEARNING The long awaited opening of Lisle Elementary School finally arrived on Monday, August 12, 2019 as elementary families filled the halls for the first time at the Lisle Elementary Families’ Meet and Greet Night. Looks of excitement and awe shone on the faces of students and adults alike as they toured the school and explored the many wonderful spaces designed for our students!

Just one week before, thousands of boxes were delivered to the new school as sounds of construction filled the spaces. It was no small feat for the school to be ready for our families and students, but thanks to the tireless dedication of our staff and volunteers, the school was ready for the students and community. Families explored the innovative classrooms, small group spaces, grand staircase, and the heart of the building, the Learning Resource Center.

The first day of school was the first at a new elementary school in more than 60 years in Lisle. Families gathered, students lined up in their new class groups, and teachers busily prepared to begin a new phase of our district’s history at Lisle Elementary School. One student was overheard saying, “I feel so lucky to go to school here!”

Once the dust finally settled and boxes were unpacked, we proudly presented the new school to the community at the Lisle Elementary School Community Debut. Nearly 650 people toured the school and saw the amazing learning spaces that were designed specifically to support collaboration, exploration, and innovation. We thank our community for the tremendous support throughout the process!

#LIONPROUD Mrs. Aimee Park Receives Prestigious Honor We are #LionProud of our own Mrs. Aimee Park! Mrs. Park was selected to receive a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), recognizes outstanding teachers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia for their contributions to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science.

According to PAEMST, “A panel of distinguished mathematicians, scientists, and educators at the State and national levels assess the applications before recommending nominees to OSTP. Teachers are selected based on their distinction in the classroom and dedication to improving science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.” Mrs. Park is one of four Illinois teachers being honored this year along with educators from across the nation.

Mrs. Park attended the PAEMST Awards Ceremony in Washington DC on October 16, 2019.

Mrs. Park has taught Science at Lisle Junior High School for 17 years. She is the embodiment of the award’s mission to recognize “teachers [that] have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas.” LJHS Principal Dave Kearney said, “We are very proud of Aimee. Her dedication to her students and work on transforming science education is an asset to our students and school.”

The PAEMST Awards Ceremony was held at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.

Superintendent Dr. Keith Filipiak said, “Aimee is passionate about both teaching and science and her enthusiasm is contagious from the moment you step into her classroom. We are very proud of Aimee’s accomplishment and are fortunate to have her share her talents with the students of Lisle District 202.”

FACILITIES UPDATE Tate Woods Elementary School

Schiesher Elementary School

Lisle District 202 has agreed to sell Tate Woods Elementary to Kindi Academy for $2,555,000.

The Academy is in the process of obtaining a Special Use Permit from the Village of Lisle in order to operate a private school on the property.

The sale is projected to occur prior to May 1, 2020.

Lisle District 202 has agreed to lease the eastern portion of Schiesher Elementary School for two years to Chesterton Academy for $218,000, plus utilities, while the Board of Education Facility Master Planning Committee evaluates the future of the site and facility.

FINANCE AT-A-GLANCE Lisle District 202 carefully plans and manages its finances to ensure maximum resources are available to prepare the students for college and career. In order to provide for a financially secure future, the Board Finance Committee annually reviews the District’s financial position and five year financial projection. Board Policy 4:20 states that the school district seeks to maintain year-end fund balances, exclusive of early tax receipts, at a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of 180 days of the expenditures. This practice helps ensure adequate resources are available to deliver exceptional educational opportunities to all students, not only today, but for many years to come.

Lisle Elementary School Construction Financing Over the past decade, and as a result of fiscally responsible practices, the District was able to save a portion of its operating funds each year to help address facility needs and anticipate costs of future facility needs. Once the community, Board of Education, and school district decided to build Lisle Elementary School, these funds were applied toward the cost of the new school.

Less than 2% of your total tax bill is currently used to repay outstanding debt of Lisle District 202. Because of its strong financial ratings and the favorable interest rate environment, the District was able to take advantage of historically low borrowing costs to reissue bonds to fund part of the construction of Lisle Elementary School. Lisle District 202 utilized a combination of available funds and bond proceeds to fund the construction of Lisle Elementary School.

ASSESSMENT WHAT IS ASSESSMENT? Assessment is defined as the process of collecting and interpreting information that can be used to inform teachers, students, and, when applicable, parents/guardians or other users of assessment information about students’ progress in attaining the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors to be learned or acquired in school (Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation, 2003). Strong assessments are the building blocks and the road map for the design and development of curriculum materials, national standards, state standards, and local content standards that ultimately serve as a guide for student success.

Current educational best practices utilize a variety of types of assessments designed to show a student’s progress over a period of time.

LOCAL ASSESSMENTS Local Assessments are a set of tools used to measure student growth and progress. These assessments are developed or selected by the school district or schools to meet specific needs.

MAP: The Measures of Academic Progress, or MAP, is a nationally normed assessment used locally to measure growth in the areas of Reading and Mathematics up to three times each year for students in Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Lisle 202 students consistently score above national grade level norms.

ASSESSMENT STATE ASSESSMENTS State Assessments are standardized tests given to all students in grades 3-8. These tests are designed to measure learning in relationship to Illinois Learning Standards and are mandated for public school districts.

IAR: The Illinois Assessment of Readiness, or IAR, is used to measure student growth for school and district accountability, though each district in Illinois decides how to use the data internally for instructional improvement. The results also allow for cross-state and international comparisons of student performance.

COLLEGE READINESS EXAMS College Readiness Exams are designed to measure the extent of student readiness for college entrance and are the State assessments required for graduation.

SAT: The SAT Suite of Assessments, provided by the College Board, is designed to measure student ability in two areas, Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (ERW) and Mathematics. Benchmark scores established in each area indicate a score that correlates with students being deemed College and Career Ready. Gradelevel benchmarks indicate whether students are on track for college and career readiness. Students are considered college and career ready when their SAT section scores meet both the Math and the EvidenceBased Reading and Writing benchmarks.
