1st United Credit Union Warns Homebuyers About a Surge in Mortgage Wire Fraud PLEASANTON, CA (April 22, 2019): Homebuyer wire fraud scams are increasing; 1st United Credit Union

warns their community to be aware, and know how to protect themselves.

Similar to other types of email phishing, mortgage wire fraud involves a hacked title, mortgage, or real estate company’s email account, then using this information to send a fraudulent email to a client – the homebuyer. The email provides the homebuyer with instructions (or sometimes a revision to instructions) on where to wire the down payment just before the loan closes. Unfortunately, the account information belongs to the criminal and is typically located overseas, making recovery of the funds difficult. “We recently had a member experience what we thought to be mortgage wire fraud,” commented Steve Stone, Chief Executive Officer at 1st United Credit Union. “Everything turned out fine in the end but the experience made us realize that this is a real threat and consumers may not be aware of it.” In their 2017 Internet Crime Report, the FBI reported more than 9,600 victims lost over $56 million in real estate-related scams involving compromised emails. Indications are that real estate is a heavily targeted sector. The 2018 report had not yet been released at the time this article was published. These wire fraud emails look legitimate and could be difficult to spot. Knowing this type of fraud exists should give consumers cause to pause before responding. 1st United offers a few ways to protect yourself: • • • •

Call your realtor or mortgage lender directly, using a phone number you know is correct (not the one in the email). Remember that email is not a secure way to send financial information, such as bank account numbers or wire information. If an email requests secure items, it’s likely a scam. If you aren’t sure if the email is legitimate, do not click on any links or attachments in it because this could place malware on your computer. Never provide account numbers, Social Security numbers or any personal information to strangers. If you’re unsure who is contacting you, don’t give out your information.

Consumers who think they’ve been a victim of fraud, should call their financial institution immediately to get help protecting their bank accounts and intercept the wire. They should also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and contact their local police department. About 1st United Credit Union It doesn’t get simpler, faster and friendlier than 1st United Credit Union. As one of the first credit unions in California, 1st United Credit Union was founded in 1932 and has been thriving in the San Francisco East Bay Area ever since. Membership is available to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, or Kings Counties in California. We believe in local, neighborly banking and hope you will too. For more information, visit 1stunitedcu.org.

May 22, 2018 A credit report is a history of how well you pay debts and other bills. A credit score is like a grade that’s given to your report. Both are used by lenders, landlords, and other service providers to determine your creditworthiness. If your credit report or credit score aren’t working in your favor, now’s the time to take action. These baby steps will get you started on the road to improvement. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT You won’t know how to fix your credit report if you haven’t seen it. Through annualcreditreport.com, you can check your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once per year. We recommend reviewing your Experian report in January, Equifax in May, and Transunion in September so you can keep an eye on things. FIX ERRORS Review your credit report for errors. If you see any accounts that you didn’t open or discrepancies, you should contact the credit bureau and the reporting business to initiate the process to correct them. Doing so could improve your credit history and score. PAY BILLS ON TIME If you don’t already, start making on-time payments for your obligations every month. Consecutive late payments will negatively impact your score. Turn the trend around by paying on time over several months. Consistent, timely payments will yield consistent improvement. REDUCE DEBT 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization, which considers the amount you owe compared to how much credit you, have available. Pay down debt so you aren’t using too much of the credit available to you. GET HELP Understanding credit and building a plan to improve it can be daunting. But there is help. Schedule an appointment with your local 1st United branch and a staff member will help you read through your report. Additionally, 1st United has partnered with BALANCE, a financial education and counseling service that can help. Services to help you get out of debt include reviewing your credit report, setting up a spending and savings plan, and even helping you to prepare to buy a home. Learn more about the services offered by BALANCE on our BALANCE Financial Fitness webpage.

June 27, 2018 Rumors have floated around for years that Social Security is running out of money and there won’t be any left for future generations. While this rumor may be false, it does contain a message for all to consider – Social Security may not be enough to retire on. Here’s why. SOCIAL SECURITY VS SOCIAL SECURITY TRUST Social Security is essentially a big pool of money that working people contribute to. Contrary to popular belief, the money you pay in to Social Security is not being held in an account with your name on it to use in retirement; the pool of funds is actively being used to pay benefits to current retirees. The Social Security Trust is a surplus of money, separate from the general fund, made up of taxes collected that exceeded benefits paid out. This Trust currently totals just under $3 trillion and helps the general Social Security fund operate at a fully-funded status; meaning, benefits are paid out at 100%. Essentially, the Trust is covering the difference between what is paid into Social Security and the amount of benefits being paid out. WHAT’S RUNNING OUT? The Social Security Trust, or surplus, is expected to be depleted by 2034, according to the Social Security Board of Trustees report. At that time, Social Security is projected to be able to cover only 75% of retiree benefits. So, Social Security will not be gone, it just might be less than you expect. This can be attributed to longer life expectancies, a smaller working-age population, and an increase in retirees as our baby boomer population leaves the workforce. HELP PROTECT YOUR FUTURE It makes sense to consider Social Security in your retirement planning but you will want to have another source of income to count on – something that is yours and yours alone. The good news is that it’s never too late to start retirement planning and I’m here to help. As the financial advisor through CUSO Financial Services, L.P. (CFS) at 1st United Credit Union, I can help you develop a retirement plan that meets your needs. I’m available to talk by phone or I’d be happy to meet you at any 1st United branch. Schedule your appointment today.

*Non-deposit investment products and services are offered through CUSO Financial Services, L.P. (“CFS”), a registered broker-dealer (Member FINRA/SIPC) and SEC Registered Investment Advisor. Products offered through CFS: are not NCUA/NCUSIF or otherwise federally insured, are not guarantees or obligations of the credit union, and may involve investment risk including possible loss of principal. Investment Representatives are registered through CFS. The Credit Union has contracted with CFS to make non-deposit investment products and services available to credit union members.

Do you order appraisals by emailing or faxing your appraiser? If so, you are unnecessarily exposing your borrower’s information to the potential risk of identity theft.

IT’S EASY TO GET STARTED

All of this functionality is available to you and your appraiser today. Simply log on to your FREE ePASS Business Center, click on Appraisal Connection and place your order. And your appraiser only needs to accept the orders that you submit. Annual Report 2018

President’s Message

I have been with 1st United Credit Union for over 20 years and have always been impressed by the work our staff does to enhance the services we provide members, strengthen community and to make 1st United a great place to work. In my first year as CEO, 2018 was no exception. A Focus on Members Serving our members is at the core of the Credit Union purpose. Members expect change, and reward businesses that continue to evolve. This year, we introduced several enhancements with this purpose in mind. A few highlights include: • The introduction of business accounts – created with the local, small business owner in mind • Launch of our pre-approval loan system so members can take advantage of incredible offers at their convenience, with a few simple clicks • Continued enhancements to our network infrastructure, enabling faster transaction processing, ensuring the security of member data, and improving our backup capabilities • And conversion to a new Visa processor, bringing faster processing and better card controls for members We continue to identify opportunities for enhancement so that our members have the very best experience and products. And to stay in tune with members’ needs, we regularly solicit and respond to feedback and have been conducting a series of focus groups to gain even greater insight. We welcome feedback from our members and encourage you all to let us know how we are doing through surveys or simply contact us at email@1stunitedcu.org.

continued to provide financial education, reaching over 4,500 people last year. Our community outreach program has not only given support to our neighbors, it has given our staff an opportunity to get involved during normal work hours. Just last year, our staff volunteered a total of 981 hours at the Alameda County Community Food Bank, at local schools and hosting financial education workshops. We love to connect with members on this level and are excited to continue volunteering this coming year. A Focus on Staff Making sure 1st United is a place that staff enjoys coming to everyday and feels they are able to grow in their careers remains a priority. Through job shadowing and rotation programs, team members can spend a day in the shoes of another. Additionally, we continue to foster our culture of hiring from within so that staff continues to have opportunities for personal and professional advancement. In 2018, we were honored as a Bay Area Best Places to Work Company by the San Francisco Business Times. This accomplishment is a testament to our success in building a company where people can thrive. Beyond 2018 All our 2018 achievements demonstrate our dedication to our stakeholders – members, community and staff. At a time when people demand more from their financial services provider, we will continue to take action to improve lives, support communities and ensure that we have a positive impact on society. Thank you to all our members, volunteers and staff for making 1st United such a great place. I, personally, appreciate everyone’s hard work and dedication.

A Focus on Community 2018 continued to focus on supporting our community’s health and financial well-being. We adopted three elementary schools, providing funding as well as a much-needed second set of hands. We also

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to thank all our members for their continued loyalty and support over the years. It’s because of your dedicated participation that 1st United continues to remain financially strong and stable. 2018 was an exciting year for 1st United Credit Union. We welcomed Steve Stone as President and Chief Executive Officer in April. His vast knowledge and experience has strengthened our executive team and will continue to support our goal for growth with strong financial stability. The Board of Directors and management of 1st United Credit Union remained keenly focused on our commitment to provide simpler, faster and friendlier financial products and services to our members. We improved technology, increased certificate rates, grew loans, attracted new members, and developed stronger relationships with our existing members. Over the past year, the Credit Union made community outreach a top priority. Staff provided financial education to various schools in Alameda County, as well as the Alameda County Step Up program. We also volunteered our time to charitable organizations in our community, including Alternative Family Services (AFS), Alameda County Community Food Bank and Toys for Tots, to name a few. The Board of Directors is proud of the hard work and dedication shown by staff supporting this initiative. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish to give our sincerest thanks to all our members, volunteers, and staff for all of their hard work helping to grow 1st United into the strong financial institution it is today. Howard T. “Bud” Garrigan Chairman, Board of Directors

The Supervisory Committee serves as the Credit Union’s audit division. We also conduct a review of the functions of the various Credit Union departments along with their compliance with applicable regulations and internal policies and procedures. In addition, the committee has regular contact with the membership to assure member requests have been properly met. In 2018, the Supervisory Committee engaged an independent audit firm to perform a financial audit of 1st United Credit Union. The results of the audit were favorable and determined 1st United Credit Union to be safe and sound in policy and practice. The audit, conducted in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), indicated that 1st United Credit Union remains strong and financially stable. Jack Sanders Chairman, Supervisory Committee

The Treasurer of 1st United Credit Union oversees and ensures the accuracy of the financial reports as presented to the Board of Directors by the management of the Credit Union. 1st United Credit Union continued to grow and gain financial strength. Total assets at yearend 2018 were $1,067,473,396. Throughout 2018, we focused on innovative products and services to help our members plan and save for the future and achieve their important financial goals. I am confident that 1st United will continue its great tradition of service to its members within the framework of financial strength and stability.

NEW

Increase Your Exposure & Grow Your Practice

Submitting articles to LawFirms.com and the ExpertHub Legal Network is a sure-fire way to gain more exposure and attract more clients to your profile. Now it’s easy with our new expertSYNDICATION Program.

Why You Should Submit Content to LawFirms.com Generates more business Consumers often visit our websites to research legal issues. Sharing your knowledge builds rapport with clients before speaking with them. Plus, every article you submit links to your profile so, ultimately, more consumers will learn about your firm and contact you.

Increases your exposure through search engines Your article will rank with search engines separate from your profile, providing you with an additional search engine position. The more you submit, the better your chances are to increase visibility on both the LawFirms.com network and within search engines.

It’s FREE and is included with your ExpertHub.com subscription.

Tips To Get You Started 

For best results, articles should be unique. If you submit articles that have been posted elsewhere on the web (i.e., your personal website, an external blog, etc.), you may not see the search engine ranking results you’d expect. If you need help writing articles or reworking existing articles, please email seo@experthub.com. Offer expires 4/30/09

Submitted articles will be reviewed prior to publishing. At times, ExpertHub may need to make changes to your article for web optimization.
