FINAL DELIVERABLE Before we dive into the research and background of this process book, I would like to introduce you to the final deliverable that all of this work has led up to. heart2heart is an app that allows people to share, listen, and record stories (revolving around sexism & racism) from around the world. It is aimed to educate, as well as build compassion and connections between people in a positive light through a social media platform.
02
CONTEXT STEP 1:
This step asks us to create context around the design challenge and note how the problem shows up in the world around us. The next step was to discuss how the design challenge shows up in the levels of oppression to help create cultural change.
COLORISM
IMPLICIT BIAS
INTENT OVER IMPACT
MICROAGGRESSION
ANTI-BLACK RACISM
IDEAL VICTIM
FEMINIST INTERNALIZED ABLEISM OBJECTIFICATION
SEXIST DOUBLE STANDARDS
DEROGATORY GENDERED DESCRIPTIONS
MISOGYNY
MALE GAZE
03
DEFINE STEP 2:
I used qualitative and quantitative methods and theories to define how you might approach the design challenge. Next step is to create a thesis question to help focus your design challenge.
Role of advertising in perpetuating racism/sexism
Exploiting/desensitizing violence for views
ACTION(S)
Viewing black peopleʼs “drana” as entertainment
CHANGE(S)
Domestic violence in Black households
STAKEHOLDER(S)
04
THESIS: How might design be used to educate young individuals in order to actively dismantle a discriminatory system with social media outlets and marginalized groups?

PERSONAL
IMAGE SORTING I curated a series of 11 social media posts, specifically Instagram, ranging from repost worthy content to controversial posts. I asked 5 participants to sort the posts by categories. The categories that the images were sorted into are: Share/Repost, Like, Neutral, Ignore, and Questionable/Controversial.

ACTIVITY NETWORK The next research method I used is an Activity Network. In general, an Activity Network is a graphical method for showing dependencies between tasks or activities in a project. The following slides show each social media image and the reactions of each participant when asking to complete the task of reacting to each instagram posts based on how they would interact with each post.

IDEATE STEP 3:
This step asks us to use an artifact, system, and/or experience to create something that will help solve our design challenge. The big question here is how can you affect change or be a part of the solution?
OPPRESSIVE THOUGHT
An app that immerses users into everyday racism
IMPACT
INTENT An app that allows people to share, listen, and record stories (revolving around sexism & racism) from around the world
A zine that highlights positive impacts of social media when considering dismantling racism and sexism in popular media
ANTI-OPPRESSIVE ACTION

PROTOTYPING LOW FIDELITY PROTOTYPE
The low fidelity prototype is quite simple. I wanted to solidify my overall idea first, then go into the basics of the application layout and necessary attributes. Although it may look like any other social media app, the importance lies in the details of the functionality of the app.

IMPACT
In order to conclude this project, it’s important to look back and reflect on the work that led up to the final deliverable.

JOURNEY
JOURNEY MAP ENTRY 1
We started off this class by talking about our identities, personalities, and writing a short poem about us. The conversations we had were a good starting point and overall good conversations to have. These exercises were very engaging and allowed all of us to get to know each other in a way that isn’t normally done in the first few days of class. These activities gave me a good idea of the structure of the course and allowed me to grasp the concepts we will be working on this semester.
ENTRY 2
The context and defining step was really helpful in understanding the complex terms we will see throughout the semester, as well as preparing for our main project for the semester. I found that being in groups was helpful because of the varying perspectives and opinions of my group members. It allowed me to understand and consider the situation in a different light that I may not have seen or understood before. The process of going through the definitions and understanding the meaning and implications allowed me to grasp another level of discrimination and oppression.
ENTRY 3
We created a thesis question throughout the define step, and next is working on a literature review. Writing the literature review was helpful in understanding how our prompt related to issues we see in everyday life. It was interesting to see the research and writing of my other group members and seeing how our thesis question worked throughout different scenarios. This step will help me think through the next few steps.
ENTRY 4
We are beginning to part ways with the group and working on some personal projects based off of our previous research. I chose to do image sorting and activity network. It was helpful to look into the dynamics of social media and how people interact with posts. This will definitely be helpful for my final deliverable. After presenting my personal projects I feel confident that I collected important and helpful data.

JOURNEY MAP ENTRY 5
This week we are starting to ideate our final deliverable. It’s helpful to first understand the background process in order to create a final deliverable that benefits from our previous research. I’m overwhelmed with the amount of ideas I have, however I think I have 3 strong contenders.
ENTRY 6
After choosing to create an app, I began creating a low fidelity prototype. This step is pretty basic, I want to get the basics and overall concept down while also figuring out a simple layout that will be most beneficial to the purpose of the app. My mid fidelity prototypes are significantly more detailed and have a solid layout and functionality. We had a critique today with Professor Teresa Moses. I got good feedback that was helpful while updating my prototypes into high fidelity. The high fidelity prototypes are really strong and support the purpose of the app well.
ENTRY 7
The impact step is really helpful for me to understand why and how my final deliverable impacts the issues it’s addressing. I think that throughout the process I was able to understand how much thought has to go into creating an app about racism and sexism.
ENTRY 8
The final step I took was to create a process book that showcases my work throughout this semester. It was really exciting to see it all come together after 16 weeks. Overall, I had a really great experience and learned a lot of new things.

CONCLUSION
After weeks of research, writing, designing, and discussing, I have a better understanding of how important it is to consider what you’re designing. Whether it’s considering who you’re designing for or what you’re designing for, it’s important to do reseach and understand your audience. Overall, throughout media, positivity is key and I hope that with my app, I was able to leave an impact on everyone.
