Dear Readers, Springtime provides many images of newness… bright green slivers of new life appear on branches and boughs as they awaken from the sleepiness of winter. Some say that parts of our southern California landscape now resemble the Emerald Isle as wild grasses pop up through formerly dry brown soil in varied hues of greens. Flowering plants, dormant from their long rest, sprout up, bringing color and celebration to the fresh landscapes around us. Springtime is also a time for planting. Sowing seeds requires knowledge, faith, courage and generosity. Sowing requires faith in the potential of each seed and the courage to risk sowing the seed without knowing the real fertility of either soil or seed, without knowing what future the weather will bring, but knowing that this year’s grain must be sown for next year’s harvest. The features of this issue of Vision and Challenge reveal the promises of springtime and various images of what we are about. For us, the work of seed-sowing has been our privilege for over 92 years as we serve the people of God in the mission entrusted to our care here in California. As we reflect on the heritage that is ours as a province, we see again and again the sowing of the seed and the good harvest that God’s grace produces. In particular, we thank our many donors and volunteers who choose to be our partners in this harvesting. In October, our worldwide congregation held a meeting in Germany; sister representatives from our 19 provinces and delegations came together to determine the direction of the congregation for the next six years. The statement it produced describes succinctly the vision of who we hope to become as we live the mission of Jesus: Trusting in God who makes all things new, we commit ourselves to LIVE incarnational spirituality, GROW in life-giving relationships, BE one in diversity. This is a springtime of sorts for our congregation as we grow in deepening our relationships with our good and provident God and sow the seeds of God’s love in our service to our sisters and brothers. Incarnating Jesus’ values in our daily lives, fostering life-giving relationships with all creation and honoring the beautiful diversity that comprises the world in which we live, we strive to “make all things new” with our Creator God. During these days of spring, I invite you to enjoy these stories of our sowing and harvesting. They are both global and local and provide a glimpse of how we hope to satisfy the spiritual hunger of those we serve. It’s springtime, a time to rejoice and celebrate! Sincerely,

From Classmates to Global Ministers by Sr. M. Regina Robbins, SND

When Sr. Mary Joel Upmeier and Sr. Mary Kenneth Hegler pioneered St. Matthias Catholic Girls High School in the fall of 1960 in Huntington Park, they had no idea of the impact that two of their students would make on the global mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Sitting in the freshman homeroom were Sharon Blunck, a graduate of St. Matthias Elementary School, and Janice Tubick from St. Rose of Lima Elementary School in Maywood. These many years later, Sister Gina Marie Blunck and Sister Mary Paulynne Tubick are returning to California from ministry abroad, looking forward to new ministries and opportunities to share the global perspectives they have gained. Sr. Gina Marie Blunck taught high school science for several years before becoming principal of Notre Dame Academy in Los Angeles. Under her leadership and guidance, NDA was twice recognized by the United States Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School in the 1990’s. With graduate degrees in education and business administration, she learned Italian and spent 16 years at the Motherhouse in Rome, serving as the Treasurer General of the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame. congregation and brought her business acumen to many locations. As she stated, “I had the privilege to see the ministries of the sisters up close and to see the seeds of new ministries actually come to fruition.

As she closes this period in her life, Sr.

Gina Marie is ready to take up yet another new challenge. Recently she accepted the position of Executive Director of the Hilton Fund for Sisters. In this capacity she will oversee the fund’s grant-making activities for religious communities throughout the world. From her earliest days in ministry, Sr. Mary Paulynne Tubick dedicated herself to the education of youth and has never stopped updating her skills as a teacher and principal of elementary schools. While she has successfully ministered to children of various economic groups, her love and focus continues to be, “for the poor,” as she experienced during her years at St. Lawrence of Brindisi School in South Los Angeles, California. Sr. Paulynne first volunteered to go to St. Julie’s School in Buseesa, Uganda in 2001, where she served as a full-time teacher, treasurer for both the high school and elementary school, and maintenance coordinator for the mission property. She returned to California in 2005, teaching at St. Matthias High School in Downey and at St. Hedwig’s Elementary School in Los Alamitos. In 2013 she once again heard the missionary call and returned to Buseesa for an additional

A new feature this year was the community service fair. Fostering a spirit of service is a treasured aspect of the SND mission in education and faith-formation. As Anne Interrante, Nun Run Coordinator, stated, “We wanted to showcase organizations whose mission complements our SND outreach. Underwriting the expenses of the powerful ministries which touch the hearts of those seeking spiritual fulfillment through a closer relationship to God, activities such as Kindred Hearts Ministry, the Associate Program, Stephen Ministry and vocation discernment Collaborating through our partner ministries to meet the needs of immigrant women and children (through South Central LAMP) and victims of human trafficking (through CAST, the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking) Over the years, a number of our retired sisters have served in uncompensated ministries, meaning that they did not receive a stipend or retirement benefits. Their total years of service in this category is 187. Today, these sisters receive a small Social Security benefit, but national research shows that a retired religious receives approximately $10,000 less in Social Security than those retired from secular employment. In addition, the province has a modest retirement fund, but the National Religious Retirement Office assesses continued on page 7

our unfunded retirement liability at approximately 50%. Donations to the Retirement Fund subsidize the cost of medical, dental, vision, hearing care and other living expenses for our senior members. The Uganda Mission Fund underwrites the operating expenses for St. Julie Primary School and Nursery School, as well as Notre Dame Senior Secondary Academy, and the missionaries’ living expenses. Since the majority of these students are boarders, a farm on the mission property provides some of the necessary food. The Julie Fund permits the Sisters of Notre Dame and their Associates to request funding in support of their ministries which benefit the poor, disadvantaged and marginalized.

To Heaven on Foot | Around Uganda by Truck In the nineteenth century, St. Julie Billiart, spiritual mother of the Sisters of Notre Dame, was often seen walking along the roads of Belgium as she went from convent to convent, visiting the sisters. Her personal concern for each of them led her to undertake her endless journeys by coach, cart or donkey, or most often, on foot. In view of her own experience of traveling, there was special meaning to her comment to a novice, “You don’t get to heaven on wheels, sister, you walk!” (Adapted from To Heaven on Foot by Sr. Mary Linscott, S.N.D.) The Sisters of Notre Dame on mission in Uganda have gone past the coach or cart to more modern modes of transportation, but they still face many transportation challenges. In the rainy season, the roads are very slippery. Both the SNDs and mission volunteers have stories of fishtailing into ditches and getting stuck in the mud. This situation is exactly what happened shortly after the photo above was taken. Another recent mishap: the sisters report that they were transporting the netball team from Notre Dame

Academy Secondary to a competition. They were about 4 hours away from Buseesa when the truck’s differential broke. Fortunately, the truck was repaired, but it was an expensive undertaking and illustrated the need to replace the truck. Sr. Anita Marie Stacy wrote that they are “really frightened to continue taking groups of students in the truck that we have, a Toyota Landcruiser 79 series. It is the only vehicle we have to transport larger numbers of passengers. Unfortunately, it is frequently in need of repair.” The truck is used to: • Transport students to music and athletic competitions

Haul animal feed and firewood Travel to Kampala (about a 4-5 hour drive) for rice and other staples to feed the children

Our current goal is to provide a new, safe and durable 4x4 truck, similar to the one that has served the mission well in the past. The cost of the truck is estimated to be $80,000. The Covington and California provinces are working together to fund this much-needed vehicle. Since walking is not really an option, we invite you to make a generous contribution in support of our Ugandan mission truck fund. Be assured of the gratitude of the Sisters of Notre Dame and the staff and students in the nursery, elementary and high schools in Buseesa, Uganda.

The Grapevine In collaboration with St. Julie Billiart Parish, the Sisters of Notre Dame are co-sponsoring Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers are church members (Catholic or non-Catholic) trained through 50 hours of formation to offer personal Christian care to individuals dealing with grief, divorce, job loss, hospitalization, financial struggles, loneliness, terminal illness and other life difficulties. The local trainers present the curriculum with a Catholic-Christian focus. After their training, Stephen Ministers meet with an assigned care-receiver weekly. A unique Lenten retreat was presented through the SND Kindred Hearts Ministry. Sr. Antoinette Marie Moon and Sr. Marie Paul Grech led parishioners from St. Kevin’s, and Sr. Anna Maria Vasquez and Associate Candidate Sherry Reynolds gave the same retreat simultaneously in Spanish at the neighboring parish, Precious Blood. Presidents’ Day weekend found several hundred young adults at UCLA for the University Catholic Conference of California 2017. Priests and sisters offered spiritual direction (including Sr. M. Judeen Julier and Sr. M. Leanne Hubbard) during the schedule of conferences, worship and fellowship opportunities. This event was an opportunity to fulfill the mission of UCCC, networking Catholic university students through intellectual engagement, spiritual nourishment and faith development.

Sr. M. Leanne Hubbard, Sr. Valerie Marie Roxburgh, Sr. M. Paulynne Tubick, and Sr. Jennifer Zimmerman served as weekly spiritual companions to participants in the “Busy Student Retreats” at USC and UCLA during Lent.

The Associates of the Sisters of Notre Dame from across the United States will have a National Gathering in Chardon, Ohio from October 20 through 22, 2017.
