A Catholic congregation of women religious, the Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States are united in one heart, one hope, and one mission to proclaim God’s goodness and compassionate love for people of all faiths and cultures through a variety of ministries, both national and international, particularly serving those who are poor and marginalized.

…Thank you for being part of our great story …and the story continues
Dear Friends,
Throughout 2024, we were privileged to remember and celebrate the 100 years of SND presence and service in California. Indeed, we are profoundly grateful to our relatives, friends, colleagues, former students and donors who were part of our spiritual and social festivities.
As it happens, the story and celebrations continue! 2025 finds us gratefully embracing our 175th anniversary as a congregation. What began in the hearts of two young women, Aldegonda Wolbring and Elisabeth Kühling, has evolved into so much more than they could have imagined. Sr. Maria Aloysia Wolbring and Sr. Maria Ignatia Kühling could not have anticipated the depth of human need today, nor the global impact of their lives of consecration and service. In faith, they moved into an unknown future, a future filled with God’s provident care.
Together, we are receiving and sharing a global spiritual impact. Collaboratively, we are encountering new faces of poverty: neglected women and children; the elderly, addicted, homeless; migrants and refugees; those who lack spiritual care; creation itself. God’s Spirit moves us forward in creative hope, reflecting our commitment to continue and adapt the mission entrusted to us.
With profound humility, we offer our gratitude to God and to each of you. As our partners in mission, your encouragement and spiritual and financial support make a profound global impact. We invite you to move forward with us into the future, a future in which we will continue to rely on God’s provident care.
Blessings always,
Sr. M. Lisa Megaffin, S.N.D. Director of Mission Advancement Services
Celebrating 100 Years
Throughout 2024, the SNDs in California celebrated the 100th anniversary of the arrival of 11 pioneer SNDs from Cleveland, Ohio. The year’s festivities were a celebration of gratitude to God and to the thousands of individuals who have journeyed with us as students, colleagues, donors, and friends.
CATHEDRAL MASS
On January 28, the SNDs were honored at a special mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Special guests included parishioners from St. Matthias and St. Lawrence of Brindisi, the two original ministries in California.
LOS ANGELES RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONGRESS
From February 16-18, the SNDs hosted a booth at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, enjoying visits with former students, colleagues, and friends. In addition, they collected more than 300 prayer intentions which were lifted up in the Masses and daily prayers at Notre Dame Center throughout the year.
More than 400 Associates, benefactors and friends gathered on Saturday, August 31 to commemorate the arrival of the 11 pioneer sisters in Los Angeles. In his homily, Archbishop José Gomez commented that “God works in mysterious ways, through ordinary people in the eyes of the world... God has chosen each one of us and called us to do great things for Him and to bring His love to the world… And that is the beautiful example that all of you sisters have given to us through your ministry in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for 100 years!”
LEGACY HALLWAY
Our new legacy hallway revisits significant moments in the past 100 years. The hallway includes eight panels of canvas-wrapped photos, as well as three-dimensional images such as a world map, Coesfeld crucifix, and a rosary from the original habit. Contact the Mission Advancement office for a private tour of our revitalized space!
MEMORIAL MASS
On November 2, the Feast of All Souls, a Memorial Mass was held to lift up all those who have passed into eternity. We remembered especially the Sisters, Associates, and family members who had passed recently.
100 years later the legacy lives, especially in the St. Lawrence and Pius-Matthias communities. Scan the QR code for more information about the centennial.
Honoring our 2024 Golden Jubilarians
Two Sisters of Notre Dame celebrated 50 years of consecration. They chose the theme “Our Gift to You is Our Life.” Their personal testimonials demonstrate how this theme has been lived through their diverse ministry experiences over the past 50 years.
Sr. Margaret Mary Scott 50 Years
Describe your vocation story in 6 words.
Faith, call, response, journey, fidelity, legacy.
What do you love most about being an SND?
Our internationality, commitment to growth, and respect for reality.
What was one particularly meaningful experience you had in your ministry, and why was it meaningful to you?
My time as a missionary in Africa was particularly meaningful. I was one of the founders of the mission in Uganda. In addition I spent time teaching and administering a secondary school in Tanzania, collaborating with Indian SNDs, the Salesians, and other religious orders. Together we started an A-level, with my focus being on teaching biology and chemistry and establishing the science laboratories.
How has your spirituality changed over the years?
I experience a deepening in my understanding of God’s providence and a growing realization that God is present in all experiences, even those we would rather not have gone through.
Sr. Julie Marie Arriaga
50 Years
Describe your vocation story…
My daily yes, a passion for mission, fidelity to my community
Who is one important mentor who has accompanied you on your life journey? What made that person a good mentor?
Sr. Mary Sheila Fay was open and supportive of my vocation when I was in high school. She helped my parents understand my special call from God.
Who is your favorite saint or inspirational person, and why?
My mother, Raquel Arriaga, was the most inspirational person in my life. She was very supportive in providing everything that we needed, including 12 years of Catholic education. I learned how to pray from her. As a family, we prayed the Rosary every day.
What do you love most about being an SND?
In our vows, we say that we rely on the “prayers and support of my sisters to live these vows faithfully.” With the various challenges of life, I have found these words to be very powerful. I also particularly love being a member of an international congregation because hearing about the life and ministry of our sisters around the world has broadened my perspective.
How has your spirituality changed over the years?
My approach to various types of prayer has grown over the years, and I have come to make prayer, as my connection with God, as my highest priority.
Thank You To Our Donors
In 1850, Sisters Maria Aloysia Wolbring and Maria Ignatia Kühling answered God’s call to consecration and service in Coesfeld, Germany. When political suppression forced the sisters to leave, they followed German refugees to America. These 175 years later, their mission has spread to 17 countries worldwide. This adaptability has had a global impact as the sisters respond to the needs of the times.
The Sisters of Notre Dame of the California region offer our heartfelt gratitude to each individual and organization that made a contribution during 2024. As our partner in sharing the SND mission, you too have made a global impact. To express our gratitude, we offer our daily prayers for you and your loved ones. Thank you for joining us in living and proclaiming the mission of Jesus Christ.
According to our Advancement Office records, an asterisk represents a donor whose first recorded gift was 25 or more years ago. Your loyalty is deeply appreciated!

At St. Francis of Assisi Church in Fillmore, California, Sr. Colette Theobald provided personal testimonials from her 17 years as a missionary in East Africa. After the Mass, the violinist from the choir approached Sr. Colette and thanked her for all that she shared. He said, “I want to give something but I’m only 17...here, take it all “ and opening his wallet, he gave her all that he had, $4. Sr. Colette’s response was, “The amount doesn’t matter. What is important is that you care for your brothers and sisters in need.” MISSION CO-OP PROGRAM,

Two SNDs from India are living at Notre Dame Center while they attend graduate classes at California Lutheran University. Sr. Pramila
Hembrom (on the left) is pursuing an MA in Educational Leadership, while Sr. Archana Joseph (on the right) is studying for a MS in Counseling with an emphasis on student support services.
The SNDs first went to India from Cleveland, Ohio in 1949 and many California donors will remember the missionaries’ stories from those early years. Today, India continues to be a beneficiary of our Global Missions efforts. Thank you to all who have embraced this mission with us over the past 75 years!

MAKING A LASTING IMPACT
Through The Wolbring Legacy Society
Leona M. Lennemann, a native of Orleans, Nebraska, left a treasured legacy in the hearts of many. Her mother, widowed at the age of 22 when Leona was just six months old, courageously weathered the impact of the Great Depression with her small family. Leona’s love for her faith was nurtured by her mother, and she understood clearly that in baptism she began a life-long journey of embracing God’s will. Devoted to her own education, Leona finished business school and secured employment as a secretary with the Department of State in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1973.
Leona’s legacy included her keen understanding of the difference between “wants” and “needs,” choosing to live frugally. She freely shared her time, talent and resources with others. As a devoted parishioner and donor at St. Stephen Martyr Parish in Washington, D.C., Leona found great joy in seeing many types of personal and institutional progress. While her achievements were many, Leona is best remembered for her faith-driven life.
The aunt of our late Sr. LaReina Kelly, she became everyone’s Aunt Leona over the years. Without any children of her own, she chose to make a generous bequest to the SNDs in California, providing support for our life and ministry. With profound and
enduring gratitude, we cherish her memory and we are honored to share her faith and legacy with those entrusted to our care.
Following Aunt Leona’s example, we encourage our friends to consider including the Sisters of Notre Dame of the California region in their estate plans. This could be
• Including a bequest in a simple will or trust
• Identifying SND as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement assets
• Setting up a “transfer on death” account which names SND as a beneficiary
The Sisters of Notre Dame are deeply grateful to our past and future planned giving donors, and we are humbled by their trust. We are privileged to serve God’s people in their names.
Membership in the Wolbring Legacy Society is offered to those individuals who include the Sisters of Notre Dame in their estate plans. The only requirement is written confirmation of the donor’s intent to make a planned gift. Membership may remain anonymous if the donor so chooses. We would be honored to welcome you into the Wolbring Legacy Society, giving us the chance to thank you personally. Members are remembered at a monthly Mass at Notre Dame Center in California. Please be assured of our prayerful good wishes, now and always.
