As this is being written, so much of the world is on pause as lifestyles adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. Spring of 2020 will forever be engraved in our minds and hearts. So frequently, we hear how the virus is spreading, and we see its impact with empty highways and closed stores and schools. Also, we hear incredible stories of the creativity, resilience and generosity of the human SHUVRQ 7KLV WLPH FDQ FKDOOHQJH XV WR UHËŒHFW RQ DOO WKDW ZH KDYH WDNHQ IRU granted… health, loved ones, freedom, friendships, community. Suddenly, our global interdependence has become incredibly tangible! The charism or unique gift that the Sisters of Notre Dame can share with the world is an awareness of God’s goodness and provident care. Vocations Team Update Since the launch of an SND-USA national vocations team in July 2019, Sr. Valerie Marie 5R[EXUJK 6U 0 .HOOH\ 5XVK 6U 0 5XWK /XEEHUV DQG 6U -HQQLIHU 0DULH =LPPHUPDQ have collaborated on ministry outreach across WKH FRXQWU\ 7KH WHDP H[SHULHQFHV RQH DQRWKHUȢV JUDFH ˋOOHG VXSSRUW DV WKH\ VKDUH their unique gifts, talents and personalities for the good of the Church. Recently, the Vocations Team compiled a resource list for young adults in need of spiritual support during the Covid19 pandemic. Pump Water System Update Last spring, the Sisters of Notre Dame LQ &DOLIRUQLD DQG .HQWXFN\ ODXQFKHG D campaign to improve the lives of 22,000 individuals in the village of Buseesa, Uganda. The availability of clean water has been a regular challenge. From the beginning of the mission, the sisters UHFRJQL]HG WKLV GLIË‹FXOW\ :DWHU VRXUFHV have been a local spring and captured rain ZDWHU EXW VWRUDJH WDQNV IRU UDLQ ZDWHU have limited capacity and durability. In WKLV GURXJKW VWULFNHQ DUHD D SXPS ZDWHU system is the only sustainable way to meet hydration and sanitation needs. During this time of the COVID-19 virus, frequent hand washing has become an important step toward prevention. The assumption, though, is that the water is clean. Although there are relatively few virus victims in Uganda, the situation is a reminder of the importance of clean water! This new durable system will use a borehole deep well and a distribution VWUXFWXUHÈ D SXPS KRXVH JUDYLW\ WDQN DQG VWDQG ORZHU WDQNV SLSLQJ DQG WDSV An additional tap at the parish will allow FRPPXQLW\ DFFHVV WR VDIH GULQNLQJ ZDWHU To date, more than $50,000 (or about 50% of the total cost) has been raised through WKH &DOLIRUQLD SURYLQFHÈ HQRXJK WR EHJLQ The SNDs are most grateful for donations from foundations, parishes, schools, and individuals. Sr. Mary Therese Kirstein Sr 1930 - 2020 Sr. Mary Therese Kirstein was born in Chicago in 1930, the youngest child of Mary and William Kirstein. Following her parents’ death, her aunt took her and her siblings to Cleveland so that they could grow up among their cousins. Sr. Therese later wrote, “She was the only mother I knew…” Sr. Mary Therese joined the SNDs in 1948 and after college, spent 33 years as an educator in Ohio and California. Her brother Edwin’s death during World War II was especially difficult for her. She faithfully offered prayers for the “safety of our military throughout the world and our veterans at home” either at Mass or during the community Liturgy of the Hours. Sr. Therese was devoted to community and to the care for the sacristy and altar decorations, a natural outgrowth of her prayer life. Bruce Kelly, an SND Associate wrote, “Heidi and I have very fond memories of her presence at SND celebrations and lectio divina.” Following her passing, a number of friends expressed their admiration on social media. Words and sentiments often repeated were “beautiful, sweet smile,” “very kind soul who always led by her example,” “loving, kind and gentle…I always felt her warm acceptance.” May Sr. Mary Therese now feel the warm acceptance of her God.
