Welcome Back Sacred!

Dear Sacred Heart Community: I walked through our beloved school in September, just a few hours before the students arrived. I passed through the triangle and the great hall before we opened the doors to welcome everyone back. These places are rich in tradition, but it is the presence of all of us that makes them sacred and meaningful.

Balloons in our school colours lined the doorways on this first day in September when we finally welcomed you "Back to School”. Family members dropping off students honked car horns in approval, and many thumbs up were seen through car windows. Students walked up to the display of balloons and paused with delight at the thought of being back in their beloved Sacred Heart. Although masks partially hid smiling faces, the twinkle in your eyes said, “I’m happy to be here” and told us everything we needed to know.

Teachers arrived early that morning in order to prepare the beautiful balloons that reflected the joy in our hearts, and to greet each one of you. They wanted your first day to be special and meaningful, and it was. The balloons are symbolic of our goals, dreams and aspirations. Balloons take flight in ways that we’d like to. They also symbolize the freedom we feel when we leave the struggles we face in life behind us. When we let the past go, we can feel our spirits lighten and we can rise up to our soaring potential, just as a balloon does. Remember that first day back and treasure everything that it represents.

Our Sacred Heart community has settled into a routine and everyone is beginning to feel thankful for all the Blessings we continue to receive every day. We watched boys play soccer and were reminded of the many possibilities yet to come. We celebrated Halloween in costume and solemnly honoured Canada’s war veterans as a community on Remembrance Day. As time went on, basketball, volleyball, hockey and other school teams began to practice. Our co-curricular activities after school fill our classrooms, from International Clubs, to President’s Council, to United Nations Club. Our library and cafeteria are bustling.

Music fills the air, coming from the dance studios, music practices, and the newest Sacred Heart tradition of ever-rotating pianists.

During Advent our community is preparing for the coming of Jesus into the world, which is the real meaning of Christmas.

Let’s continue on this wonderful journey and focus on all the great things yet to come. Remember the balloons you saw on the first day of school and use them to inspire you to reach great heights. Life is filled with infinite possibilities. May the true spirit of Christmas provide you and everyone in your life with hope and love.

May your Christmas season be filled with many Blessings.

SACRED CONNECTIONS

Over the past year and a half, as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Sacred Heart student body has witnessed the tremendous effects the use of technology has on education. Said technology has led to the creation of new and innovative ways to present information to students and teachers alike, though it has played an insurmountable role in education for far longer than the past year and a half. Nowadays, technology comes in a variety of forms, including computers and cellular devices, all of which contain enormous amounts of information and are accessible to anyone who owns electronic devices.

The reality is, having such an enormous amount of information always close at hand has led to a change in how it is consumed. A few key words and you have the power of several tens of thousands of results relating to your question. There is no longer a need to consult physical sources for information, which makes finding information that much faster and easier. But the internet is not fact checked, nor is it always reliable. In fact, anyone can post just about anything on the internet, whereas most books have to undergo rigorous evaluation to be published.

Throughout the course of the pandemic, students have used technology to meaningfully engage with their peers without having to put themselves or their friends at risk, resulting in more emotional resources available in a time when everyone felt isolated. In addition, the popularity of online learning as a whole during the more serious parts of the pandemic cannot be ignored. Teachers who had previously never posted online material before were now creating google classrooms for their students and setting up online resources. This opened the door for an entirely new type of learning that became incredibly successful as a whole, and now carries on into how our school system now functions. For better or worse, advancements in technology have shaped the way we learn, grow, and perceive the world while in school. It is up to us what to do with this gross wealth of information and resources we now have the privilege of accessing. In the end, how you choose to use them will determine the quality of your learning experience.

CAFETERIA COMEBACK

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Welcome Grade 9s!

Carys Watson and Katerina Khilov A new year means a new set of students! In addition to the normal stresses of starting high school, the grade 9s are also dealing with the burden of the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools are luckily able to stay open-- something that many of the grade 9s are thankful for. Our new 2.5 hour structured classes and the strict Covid-19 don't necessarily make for a "normal" grade 9 experience, yet our grade 9 students claim to have a positive opinion about Sacred Heart so far.

Payton Foot (grade 9 iRAP): What was your first impression of the school?

Payton, a new grade 9 student in the iRAP program, was nervous at first but admitted, ¨It ended up being not that bad¨. Despite the

MR.HUANG INTERVIEW

Here at Sacred Heart, we are a community of unique individuals who support and guide one another throughout our time here and beyond.

This year Sacred Heart welcomed a new member into, the Head of the Arts Department, Mr.Huang.

Mr.Huang answered some questions for Sacred Beat.

Take a look at the person behind the

teacher.

1. What made you want to become a music teacher, and can you elaborate on your experience with music (what instruments do you play, when did you start, etc)?

It was through my experiences in participating in my high school music program that inspired me to teach music. I was fortunate to have incredibly passionate teachers who fostered a love for playing in a concert band. Through those experiences, I found a safe and welcoming place to develop my skills, while rehearsing and performing with my peers. I started playing the tuba in high school, and continued studying music throughout my university years. My expertise lies within playing on brass instruments.

2. Why do you think it is important for students to learn and explore the arts?

I believe the arts are a fundamental expression of us as individuals. It is an exceptional way of thinking, communicating, gathering, reflecting and celebrating one another. We all appreciate the arts. Whether it be through the movies and shows we watch, the music that accompanies our commute to work, how we decorate our living spaces, or how we move through in celebration and grief. Therefore, I think it is important for students to take the opportunity to learn how to create, and express themselves as a means to find their passion, and to share it with the world.

3. How do you feel about becoming Head of the Arts Department at a school with a brand new Integrated Regional Arts Program?

I feel grateful to be part of a new and innovative program, with an incredibly caring community. The students have been nothing short of exemplary since I've arrived and I look forward to contributing to our young and exciting Integrated Regional Arts Program. A special shout out to the Sacred Heart Staff for being welcoming and kind to me as I'm getting settled in.

MR.HUANG INTERVIEW (CONTINUED) 4. What advice would you give to students interested in exploring a career in the arts?

The advice I would give to students interested in exploring a career in the arts is to TAKE RISKS! Art is about creating, innovating, pushing yourselves out of your comfort zone. I'd like students to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Do not hold back your ideas, and work. Challenge yourself and those around you to create meaningful and insightful work while developing your skills and technique.

5. As an artist, who would you say are your biggest inspirations?

As an artist, I would say my biggest inspiration is my mother. Up to this day, she continues to create beautiful art through her watercolour landscape paintings, her traditional calligraphy practice, and playing the classical violin. She is the example of an artist who continues to develop her craft, takes risks with her work, and continues to contribute to her community. She is always learning, and recognizing the importance of the arts in both her life, and the lives of others.

IRAP WELCOME DAY

By Allison Kalist and Olivia Stone Art has always been an integral part of our Sacred community, and we are so glad to be able to share our passion for the arts with our new iRAP students.

On Thursday October 21st, Teachers, Staff and Students welcomed our iRAP Class of 2025, into the program. Students came down to the Cafeteria where they received a personal address and

Students also worked together to create an art installation titled “Points of Integration”. The idea behind this art piece was inspired by the presentation ‘Living Hyphen’ by Justine Abigail Yu for Asian and South Pacific Islander Heritage Month last year. Here at Sacred Heart we have students with a wide variety of talents and interests.

One part of what makes the iRAP program unlike others is that students are not restricted to one art discipline, we are hyphenated as artists and as people.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY Thursday, September 30th A Message From Chaplaincy September 30 has been recognized as Orange Shirt Day for many years; a day to acknowledge the trauma and legacy of the residential school system in Canada. This year, however, marked the first time that September 30 was officially recognized as the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. This is an important milestone for Canada, both in our history and

present

day.

The

trauma

and

legacy

of

the

residential

school

system

is

often

understood as something from the past, but Indigenous communities continue to face numerous traumas because of the many racist policies and systems that continue today. So, while September 30 is often seen as a day to remember an old system that is no longer in place in Canada, it is also a reminder to us to recognize the many challenges Indigenous communities continue to face.

is

not

the

only

day

we

should

be

listening

and

working

towards

Reconciliation, but it is a great reminder that as far as Canada has come, there is still a long way to go. The work we must do for Reconciliation is not a one day promise, it's a daily commitment to do better.

School Lockers Return

Students are packed with excitement to be back at school, and with the return of lockers their excitement grows

Students at Sacred Heart are excited and relieved to finally receive school lockers after Covid-19 protocols prevented use of them during the start of the year. As Kiamehr Tahmasb notes, "I am happy that I am able to get lockers this year because I know the grade 9s last year didn't get them".

Students were able to request a locker starting in early October using a Google Form provided, and have been issued a locker number and a free lock to use if they are in grade 9. Students have said that they feel that a large load has been lifted off their shoulders, literally, now that they are able to store their personal belongings and school supplies inside their lockers rather than in their backpacks.

Although we have been given the chance to use lockers, it’s important to stay diligent and attentive as we have worked so hard together as a school community to relieve restrictions due to Covid-19. Enjoy your lockers and stay safe Sacred Heart!

In times like these, it is important to have fun activities. Many things such as school dances are difficult to hold with the pandemic, so this year, Sacred Heart was introduced to Sacred Cinema! Students were able to vote on which movie they wanted to watch, and classes would be called down at scheduled times to watch the movie. The first movie that was chosen for Sacred Cinema was Marvel studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy. Students have expressed that the comedic action/sci-fi movie was perfect to watch with friends, and the experience was a great way to make it feel like normal times again. When asked what the experience was like as a whole, 9th grade Zara Omere said, “It was fun! I really loved the fact that they had snacks!” The chips handed out were extremely popular amongst the students.

“I thought the movie choice was good,” iRAP student Stella Almeida said. She then added, “I liked that we had chips during the movie; that made it a whole lot better.” Despite complaints about the chairs being uncomfortable, students had an overall positive experience. “...I think it was a fun experience and I’m glad it was organized.”

It is safe to say that Sacred Cinema is a fun, engaging activity, and students are hopeful that it will continue to run.

Mission of giving iRAP students ipads, pencils and apps: Why were iRap students given iPads to use for the school year? iPads were given out to give new students entering the iRap program a chance to work with technology in their classrooms. The iPads also let students grow as artists and evolve throughout their art journeys.

“I think that getting iPADS this year was a privilege. We get to do so many things and have many opportunities with the iPADS. With this advantage we get to use it for many other subjects like science, math, and more” - Tara A.

“I think that it’s a very useful tool and digital art is something we can learn more about and the iPADS are very good for that, but there are some cons like we don’t have the opportunity to create physical art anymore” - Isabella T.

Apps provided to iRAP students:

Procreate (art related purposes) The students receive an opportunity to draw digitally either for their integrated arts classes or independently. Procreate gives students the feeling of drawing with pen and paper while including all of the advantages of drawing digitally.

Padlet (blog) A digital bulletin board tool that can be used by students and teachers to create posts. These posts can include writing pieces, pictures, blogs and videos.

Affinity Photo Used as an editing tool on the iPADS. The app performs extremely well and has excellent functions that help improve images and give them a new look.

Affinity Designer: Used to create concept art, print projects, logos, icons, UI designs, mock-ups and more. It was created to thrive on the electric pace of the latest computing hardware.

Brightspace Portfolio Students can capture evidence of their learning with this app. They can use the app by taking pictures of their work, record their thoughts and reflections, and manage their work.

GarageBand A complete recording studio. GarageBand does things in minimal time that would require hours in an expensive recording studio. iRAP students can use the app to record vocals, acoustic instruments, software instruments, electric guitars and more.

Even with Covid 19 around, Sacred did not fail to host amazing Halloween festivities. From costume contests to pumpkin decorating, we found many innovative ways to show our school spirit this Halloween. Everyone showed their spirit in their creative costumes. A Halloween Kahoot was played and the winner won a free cafeteria cookie! A costume contest was hosted by Spirit Council and the winner was Alex Z. who came dressed as a french maid.

Narration AN UNEXPECTED VISIT

This is the story of the day I grew up.

I got to our new home from school and quickly dropped my backpack on the old wooden floor with innocent happiness. I went to my room, and looked out the window to see clouds forming. I played video games on my small bed until it was time to go to sleep. It was just an ordinary day, I thought.

A sudden noise later woke me from my sleep. It was dark and as I sat up in my bed, I saw him. A man I hadn't seen in months. It was the man that raised me. "Hey little man, we are going to go somewhere", he whispered. I could barely make out his shaded face in the dark. "Why?" I questioned, "I'm so sleepy". He had a gentle and pleasant look on his face and he hugged me with promise, "Don't worry, you can sleep in the car". I clumsily put my clothes and shoes on, and he went to get my brother. We walked slowly to the car. We were led through a calm world, drizzled with light rain, and a slight cold. We got into my father's car and he began to drive away. My father just wanted to see me again.

I could see the dark woods on the side of the highway and the glow of red from the car. All of a sudden, another car rushes in front of us and starts to slow down. I look out the window while my brother reassured me that "it is going to be okay." My father stops the car. The car door swings open and I hear wet footsteps retreating. Then I hear muffled voices. My brother says only two words: "stay here" and he leaves me alone in the car. My father just wanted to see me again.

I look out the window again to see that my mother and father are fighting. Aren't parents supposed to be happy? Aren't parents supposed to be together? Is this about me? Is this why I had to move away with my mom? I start to understand, my father just wanted to see me again.

After a while, my door opened and my mom comforted me tightly in her arms. "Everything is going to be okay", she repeated. We went back to our home and my mom brought me to my room and laid me down to sleep. My father just wanted to see me again.

ESL Ambassadors' Club

Wendy’s Walk

We were so happy to gather the ESL students at the ESL orientation in the library last month.

A special thanks to our Principal, Vice Principals, Guidance Counsellors, Librarian, and our ESL teachers for bringing us a wonderful orientation with delicious snacks, informative messages, and a very positive experience.

At the orientation, students were introduced to our amazing Sacred community, the special opportunities offered in the ESL program, how to provide the best support we can to English language learners, and the significant contributions that English language learners can make to the Sacred Heart community.

At the end of the orientation, every student received ESL spirit wear which represents the Sacred Heart spirit and was designed by a Sacred Heart student.

On October 27, the ESL Ambassadors’ Club gathered together in person for the first time in 2 years. We experienced a great Canadian tradition -- walking to Wendy's with friends and each student ordered their favourite Wendy's Frosty. A special thank you to Ms. Ferro for meeting with us and also purchasing our treats.

A Walk Along the Historic Main Street Newmarket ESL classes explored historic Main street, experiencing the local history and the culture of old Newmarket. Students visited the Newmarket library, various restaurants and shops, and walked around Fairy Lake. Thank you to Mr. Talamo and Ms. West for bringing taking us on the tour.

Sacred Heart Spirit Many of our ESL students live in Richmond Hill, Keswick, Aurora, or even further away. Our English language learners chose to come to Sacred Heart because of the strong sense of community our ESL department has. It is a great honour to have ESL students join us and build a better Sacred together!

Rachel: It was a really big opportunity to show people what I'm capable of and how I can make an impact in the school. I wanted to be a part of something bigger and be recognized. I want to make a difference and I have the potential, I just wanted to be given the opportunity.

Alexis: I wanted to be a voice for the grade nines, and I wanted to make sure that we had activities this year, and that we could be involved as much as possible.

Q: What do you like most about student council?

Sabina: As much as we’re serious about everything we’re doing for the school, we’re also working with each other and that’s really important. Our council has become much closer in just the few meetings that we’ve had, and we’re getting to know each other and are learning to work well together, which I feel we do really well.

Emma: I like the environment, I like the pace that we work at. I like the community aspect, and we all work very closely together.

Q: What would you say to grade 9s next year who want to join stuco?

Rachel: Definitely do it. Yes, the chances may be slim of you getting in, depending on how many people apply, but still take the chance.

Be yourself and just go for it. It’s a really fun experience and a really great opportunity. (It also looks great on a university application, so just keep that in mind).

Emma: It's a great opportunity. It's a great way to get your voice heard within the school and to plan stuff out. You get to know people, make new friends and stuff like that.

Q: If you could travel back in time to any time period, where would you go back to?

Rachel: I like our time period. There’s so much access to everything now, and life is just easier. Everything is so convenient and I don’t think I’d want to be in a better time. But if I had to pick another time, it would be before pollution and climate change was a problem, because now anything we do affects the environment.

Sabina: Early 2000s, because we were just born at that time, but weren't old enough to experience a lot of things. It would be cool to see what life was like at a time that we know we were alive, but didn’t actually get to see the world the way everyone else did.

Q: Would you rather be a professor or a spy?

Sabina: Spy. That sounds really fun and you get to be undercover and are in like a secret society.

Emma: A professor, because they get to help people and teach people and help them understand what they're doing and learning.

Q: Who is your favourite Disney princess?

Emma: Belle, because she’s intellectual but she's also really strong spoken.

Alexis: Cinderella. Her whole life is a really good story and she's also very pretty.
