Tempelhof Etude v.2 FOR ORCHESTRA for The Knights

2011, rev. 2012

Commissioned by Susan Bloom and Eddie Jacobsen for The Knights ©2012 Lisa Bielawa

LISA BIELAWA Tempelhof Etude v.2 FOR ORCHESTRA

SCORE IS IN C Duration c. 8:30

Instrumentation 2 Flutes 2 Clarinets and/or Oboes 2 Bassoons 2 Horns in F 2 Trumpets 1 or 2 Trombones Percussion (one player, optional Timpani) Strings

PERFORMANCE NOTES Tempelhof Etude v.2 is played without conductor. The score is in C. All woodwind and brass parts can be played by any number of similar instruments. Trumpet and Clarinet parts can be played on instruments in any key, as long as parts in that key can be provided. Where multiple options are given in the parts, the player may choose any of the parts on the page, unless otherwise instructed.

PROGRAM NOTE Tempelhof Etude is the first musical chapter of a project that will culminate in “Tempelhof Broadcast,” a 60-minute piece for 600+ musicians on the tarmac of the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. This site, famous for its role in the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49, is currently open to the public, unaltered, but in 2013 it will begin to evolve into a new role in the life of the city. On several days in May 2013, we will turn the runways into a vast musical canvas, as professional, amateur and student musicians execute a spatialized symphony. The massive event will begin in the center of the field and disperse outwards. One of the big challenges for me is to find ways to make a dynamic piece without players needing to have written parts. In this Etude, I begin to explore some of the ways that musical material can unfold according to simply-defined ‘tasks’ – ways to make musical experiences unfold organically, according to mnemonics, rules and games. Tempelhof Etude was commissioned for the Knights by Susan Bloom and Eddie Jacobsen.

“The sight of a difficult task accomplished lightly gives us the sense of the impossible.” - Goethe, Elective Affinities “It takes a multitude to make such a stillness…” - H.G. Wells, The Food of the Gods “…man is only an extension of the spirit of place.” - Lawrence Durrell, Justine

EITHER Pattern 1:

% ! % % 7 8% %! . &%

8% ! % .

(start on any beat, independently)

Cl.

&% % % . ! ! & $ !1 3

Players may choose any part in their range. Clarinets decide which pattern to play at "K," and may switch (together) from one to the other. All other hi players must follow, first finishing whatever phrase/measure they are playing then joining the other pattern. They may play pattern 1 on any beat, and pattern 2 with the Clarinets or at either of the arrow-indicated entrance times.
