Sapienza communication campaign The brief requires the creation of an external communication campaign for the Department of Architecture of the University of Rome La Sapienza through the creation of 5 posters, a pack of postcards, an informational leaflet and an editorial product containing the offer of the school for the 2017/2018 academic year.

CONCEPT INSPIRATION

CONCEPT After a research a series of key words referring to the Faculty of Architecture - words related to the concept of design, creativity, inspiration - were identified. Proceeding with the analysis of the reference “Idea! Zarvos “by Henrique Foster, the posters are characterized by a solid background and graphic compositions of buildings observed from different angles. To formulate the concept of the project, a decomposition of iconic images related to each course were transformed into vector drawing. The brief requires to represent the main places of Rome within the products, since one of the fundamental characteristics of the School is its position. In addition to the buildings, which represented the theme of Architecture, it was also decided to add some

of the most iconic objects of Italian Design to represent the Degree Course in Industrial Design, while the Degree Course in Building Process Management is represented by the idea and concept of building, construction and project.

These representations are reported in the form of three-dimensional solids, presented through a game of shadows and contrast in order to achieve a greater impact. Moving away from what was the reference of Henrique Foster, which has a selection of monochromatic colors for each poster, four background colors that were strongly in contrast with each other were selected with the aim of increasing the visual impact of the images.

La Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico in Architettura di durata quinquennale è l’indirizzo classico di studi mirato alla formazione dell’architetto.

Il Corso di Laurea è regolato da normative europee e caratterizzato da un percorso formativo che si struttura in insegnamenti pratici e teorici.

Gli insegnamenti del Corso si dividono in tre ambiti principali: i laboratori di progettazione, dove prevale una didattica improntata al ‘leaning-by-doing’, i corsi storico-umanistici che riguardano tanto l’architettura quanto la città e il paesaggio, e i corsi tecnico-scientifici finalizzati ad apprendere gli strumenti del disegno, del restauro, delle tecniche costruttive e delle politiche urbane.

Il Corso di Laurea in Scienze dell'Architettura forma una figura professionale innovativa in grado, già dopo il conseguimento del primo livello, di svolgere un innovativo ruolo di raccordo fra progettisti e committenza e fra amministrazione e impresa.

Nel corso del triennio lo studente affronta tutti gli aspetti dell'architettura, acquisendo un’adeguata preparazione nelle aree disciplinari della progettazione architettonica e del paesaggio, della storia dell'architettura, del restauro architettonico e urbano, dell'urbanistica e del governo del territorio.

Alla fine del percorso è possibile accedere all’esame di abilitazione per l’esercizio della professione di Architetto Junior.

Le finalità didattiche e i percorsi di studio del Corso di Laurea in Disegno Industriale sono da sempre orientati al progetto, concepito nella sua accezione più sperimentale come processo critico innovativo.

Tale approccio ha riguardato i diversi campi di applicazione legati alle tre più importanti anime dell’Industrial Design: il product design; l’interior, public e exhibit design; il visual, graphic and communication design.

Il corso risponde alla notevole domanda di profili professionali che operano con competenza nei molteplici settori produttivi inerenti la progettazione di artefatti materiali e immateriali.

Il Corso di Laurea in Gestione del Processo Edilizio-Project Management nasce dalla una forte richiesta proveniente dal mercato del lavoro riferita, in particolare, al settore delle costruzioni.

Questo ruolo prevede l'inserimento dei laureati in un ambito produttivo che vede nella progettazione-costruzione il proprio centro di competenza, compreso il campo della riqualificazione-recupero.

Il corso è volto alla preparazione di un operatore in grado di gestire le fasi del processo edilizio, dalla disciplina dei finanziamenti, alla progettazione, alla realizzazione dell’opera, alla sua gestione, con particolare attenzione alla fattibilità tecnica, economica e procedurale degli interventi.

L’

acquisizione degli elementi culturali, metodologici, scientifici e tecnico-strumentali che sono alla base della cultura del progetto costituisce obiettivo fondamentale per la formazione del laureato in Disegno Industriale.

Gli insegnamenti teorici, le esercitazioni progettuali, il tirocinio e il complesso delle attività formative previste nel triennio sono finalizzate alla formazione di una figura tecnico-professionale in grado di affrontare ad una scala di media complessità tematiche differenti. Al fine di raggiungere la preparazione necessaria al conseguimento del titolo finale relativo al Corso di Laurea in Disegno Industriale, oltre ad una buona cultura di base di carattere generale, è necessaria l'acquisizione di una serie di conoscenze specifiche previste dal percorso formativo in ambiti disciplinari diversi: nell'area scientifica; nell'area tecnologica; nell'area umanistica; nell'area della rappresentazione e della comunicazione multimediale; nell'area delle scienze economiche e sociali.

L'acquisizione dell'insieme di tali conoscenze e competenze è finalizzata alla formazione, nell'arco dell'intero triennio, di una solida preparazione nell'ambito delle discipline di progetto, che mettano in grado il laureato di operare come tecnico del progetto con capacità e consapevolezza nella complessità della società contemporanea.

l Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Architettura del Paesaggio, intende conferire una formazione specialistica, nella quale si integrano conoscenze teorico-critiche e competenze operative e professionali nel campo della progettazione del paesaggio alle diverse scale, anche per collaborare con altre figure professionali dei settori dell'architettura, dell'ingegneria e delle scienze naturali. Il percorso formativo è articolato, analogamente a quanto già avviene nell'ambito dell'Unione Europea, in insegnamenti e attività didattiche finalizzati riferiti alla pianificazione, progettazione e gestione dei processi di trasformazione del paesaggio nelle sue componenti naturali e antropiche, in grado di soddisfare esigenze umane e naturali, funzionali ed estetiche, basate sulla conoscenza dei caratteri fisici, ecologico-ambientali e socio-culturali e dei valori culturali del paesaggio, delle potenzialità e delle criticità dei contesti in cui si realizzano gli interventi. Il percorso formativo tiene conto della peculiarità della disciplina paesaggistica contemporanea orientata a valorizzarne l'identità dei luoghi, gli aspetti più specificamente tecnici e tecnologici, gli obiettivi di qualità del paesaggio, i metodi ecologico-ambientali, le finalità sociali del progetto, i caratteri di sostenibilità ambientale, economica, sociale, tecnico-impiantistica, energetica e una visione contemporanea e dinamica degli aspetti ambientali.

a preparazione offerta dal corso di laurea consente d'inserire i laureati come architetti junior in un settore produttivo che vede nella progettazione-costruzione il proprio centro di competenza, compreso l'ambito della riqualificazione e del recupero del patrimonio edilizio e urbano, con un indotto crescente nel campo delle tecniche e con enormi problemi di adeguamento dell'apparato tecnico della pubblica amministrazione. Le attività cui è tendenzialmente destinato il laureato in Scienze dell'Architettura sono legate a: studi professionali, società ed enti di progettazione: per la progettazione di costruzioni civili semplici, per il rilievo, le indagini, la diagnostica sullo stato del patrimonio insediativo esistente; imprese di costruzioni: per il rilievo, le indagini tecniche e la conduzione di cantieri; enti di gestione del territorio (ministeri, regioni, enti locali, enti economici, enti di normazione): per le indagini e rilevamento delle strutture insediative nell'ambito di atti di pianificazione generali o attuativi (piani particolareggiati, programmi di recupero urbano e di sviluppo sostenibile ecc.) e per la gestione tecnico-amministrativa degli interventi; soprintendenze regionali per i beni e le attività culturali, soprintendenze per i beni ambientali e architettonici e soprintendenze archeologiche: per il rilievo critico, le indagini e la diagnostica sul patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico-ambientale e per la gestione tecnico-amministrativa degli interventi; istituzioni, società e imprese operanti nel settore del controllo dell'impatto ambientale, anche tramite l'impiego dei sistemi di telerilevamento, di quelli informativi GIS e delle principali reti di monitoraggio.

Pinetti pavilion A project conceived for the 10 complements for 10 rooms workshop organized by Assarredo. The brief requires the design of a pavilion 3 x 3 x 3 m large located inside the Salone del Mobile, part of a system in which 12 companies are shown.

The assigned company is Pinetti, which specializes in luxury leather accessories.

EXHIBITION DESIGN

CONCEPT Pinetti is a family business in Bergamo. They specialize in making hand made leather accessories for luxurious residential or public spaces. Their products are of very high quality and often custom made.

After visiting their company and researching their catalogue we decided to focus our concept around two of their products. The first one is the Almeria basket, one of their best selling products, which has an outstanding and eyecatching pattern braided together. This pattern has such a memorable visual effect that became the inspiration for the design of the pavilion. The pattern can be used as an architectural shape for

the pavilion that best represented the company’s identity. The second product typology are the board games, which we thought was able to show all the possibilities and essence of the company.

We decided to create a story of a “game” as a way of interaction and engagement with the visitors.

The shape of the pavilion becomes a blank canvas, on which textures of materials that are used for the Pinetti production can be projected.

The visitors ,thus, become “players” and can interact with this projection by choosing a sample of a material. The projection of it’s texture gets triggered by taking out a sample.

By studying the pattern of the Almeria basket and experimenting with all the shape possibilities, we chose a simple spherical but open shape as we understood that a 3 x 3 x 3 m space was too small for complicated architectures. Inside the pavilion we have a bench that runs along the sides, with real sets of chess displayed inside built in plexiglass containers. On top of the chess sets we have a digital touch-screen displaying the Pinetti catalogue and a digital chess game.

PROJECT DETAILS

In the middle of the pavilion we have an interactive table and the material samples.

Inside the samples we have a chip that reacts when placed on top of the table and projects the selected material. The interactive space and the samples are highlighted. Longfocus projectors are used as the quality and possibilities of images are much higher and appropriate. They are located on both sides of the pavilion. The outer one will work in a stand-by loop mode. The inner one will react to the chosen sample. The projections covers the visitors too to increase the engagement.

The purpose of the concept is to create a space in which the identity of the company, that are shown through the visually strong shape of the pavilion, can be perceived by the visitors by directly interacting with it. The goal is not to display their many products, but to advertise the company by making the visitors interested and curious of the company, making them want to know more about it.

Soap lab The brief requires the design of a small useful object with a size within a volume of 400 x 400 x 400 mm.

The project aims to explore the cultural relationship between Design and Autoproduction.

CONCEPT Soap Lab is a home kit designed to recycle used cooking oil and convert it into soap, by the means of a simple chemical procedure.

The idea is to create a system of different components which functions and usage are combined and communicated through the packaging-container. The box is designed according to Instructional Design concepts; thought out to be not only a means of protection and ease of transport, but also the instruction that explains the correct use and the right order of the process to make soap.

A sliding mechanism is used for the opening, on the back of the lid there are the process instructions, warnings and precautions regarding contact with sodium hydroxide. The product spread over

two levels. The first consists of a plan removable containing the components, sorted according to a letter system that allows the user to identify and assemble the components with the help of instructions. On the bottom there are the mold and the kit safety to be worn compulsorily during the method.

The project starts from the intention of finding a solution for household cooking oil disposal, an alternative to the classic procedure of oil disposal, which, after usage, is often and mistakenly poured into the sink, causing damage to the environment.

Therefore, the goal is to raise the user’s awareness of theme of recycling and to guide it towards correct responsible disposal, offering the possibility of transforming a refusal into a useful product, converting its function and donating to these substances a second life.

Two beakers of 1 liter are chosen as containers due to the shape that guarantees an easy pour of the mixtures. The Caps are designed to fit the containers. The first one consists of an oil filter with a cap,the second one is a lid with an integrated whisk, operated by a crank.

A sliding mechanism is used for the box. On the back of the lid there are the process instructions, warnings and precautions for working with lye. The kit is structured over two levels. The first consists of a removable plane containing components, sorted according to a letter system that allows the user to identify and assemble components with the help of instruction. On the bottom are the mold and the safety kit to be worn during the soap making process.

CONCEPT The themes selected from a preliminary research on brick and mortar grocery stores are fresh food, ready meals and wellness.

From an in-depth study on food retail it has emerged that the fresh department is the main success factor in the mass market, so much so that they still manage to differentiate themselves and counteract the online competition. In fact, most people prefer to buy fresh produce in brick and mortar stores where it is possible to judge the quality of the products in person.

The fruit and vegetable department are an important part of the product turnover, exeeding that of meat and fish. In the future, the main competitors of mass market retailers will not be online grocery shopping, but food delivery instead, a trend that has undergone

an exponential increase in popularity in recent years.

Despite the enormous success of food delivery, more and more consumers have the desire to better control what they eat, where it comes from, how it was grown, how it was harvested or how and where it was cooked.

And this is a requirement that delivery can hardly meet.

The concept therefore consists in the implementation of an in-store service of washing and cutting the fruit and vegetable department. The customer can choose in person the products he is interested in and decide in what form and quantity to cut them. The goal is to make the process of cooking a meal easier and faster, without having to give up the freshness and quality of the ingredients.

CUSTOMER JOURNEY Upon arrival, the customer unlocks the shopping cart at the terminal with their fidelity card and place the cutting service basket into the shopping cart. In the fresh fruit and vegetables department, they can select in person the products they want.

Through the touchscreen integrated into the cart, they can enter the order details such as the shape and weight. The cart will automatically update the price. To start the order, the customer needs to hand over the basket to the cutting service staff.

Afterwards, they can continue shopping in other departments. When the order is ready, they will receive a notification and will be able to collect the product in the refrigerated lockers with the provided PIN. At last, the customer con proceed with the payment by exiting the grocery store through the payment area without having to wait for a queue.

The Tracxpoint sensor system located at the beginning identifies and communicates the order details to the operator. The operating area is at the center, with the machinery located symmetrically on both sides of the counter. The machines follows the order of washing, peeling, cutting and packaging.

In the service blueprint we have visual representation of the entire service process.

The role of Tracxpoint technology, other than the recognition and calculation of products, is mainly that of collecting and managing the data of the entire manufacturing process, especially in the backstage to optimize coordination and to keep track of all the different orders.

The system map illustrates the structure of the service and the relationship between the stakeholders. It addresses the management of organic waste and any leftover products from the service and explains how the service shortens the waste disposal chain. Organic waste is generated directly in the grocery store instead of the customer's home and can be sent directly to waste disposal companies. Leftover produce can be processed into V range products, such as ready to eat meals.

Musaic The coronavirus pandemic is causing an epidemic of loneliness and social isolation among adults, carrying with it significant health and emotional risks. The theme of the project, “Design out Isolation”, doesn’t only refer to physical isolation. The uninfected patients, elderly people, children, and even pets who usually need care of others are in more vulnerable situation. The brief requires the design of a solution to the problems created by Isolation through service design thinking and service design doing.

PROBLEM During the initial stages of lock down in Italy, facilities like museums and art galleries were forced to close during the quarantine, resulting in their inability to make any kind of revenue.

Furthermore, the more time it passes the more they can become neglected. On one hand, children of young age are often too young to understand the severity of the situation and being forced to stay at home for such a long period of

time may lead to frustration and boredom. As they are not going to school anymore, they seek attention and entertainment from their parents.

On another hand, most of the parents that are staying at home need to work during the week.

They find it difficult to tend to their children while having to work at the same time.

CONCEPT The proposed solution is an interactive entertainment platform that brings all the cultural knowledge, lab activities and educational projects that currently exists in museums directly to children in a digital way. At the same time, it is an initiative that represents a support for all the cultural public facilities that are closed now due to the quarantine.

It also can be of help for families, parents that are struggling to work at home and entertain their child at the same time.

SYSTEM MAP Every museum that wants to join the initiative can look for a developer themselves to create and digitalize multimedia content. Museums staff, which are familiar with the topics and activities, work together with the developer to create engaging and interactive video-tours, games and activities. Everything will have a standardized time and will be uploaded onto the platform’s system. The teachers, then, are notified by the school of this new initiative, and starts to select material that is suitable for the level of their class and create a weekly timetable with the activities. Students can learn and deepen their knowledge while still having fun.

PLATFORM STRUCTURE The platform is mainly divided into three sections. The first one is dedicated to museums, in which they can set up their virtual tour, design each room’s layout. The second part is dedicated to teachers, which are responsible of setting up the class, choosing the museums and checking the results. The third section is dedicated to students, where they can tour the museum virtually, play the games and do the exercises.

The service blueprint illustrates all the actions and relationship between the numerous stakeholders.

The stakeholders on the left are divided by the line of visibility into the ones that directly interact with the platform and the ones that indirectly interacts with it that have more of a supporting role. The whole projects is mainly divided into three phases.

The preparation phase is when the project officially begins. All the operations that are needed to start the service are described here. The second phase of usage outlines the entire user flow of the service.

Finally, in the post-isolation phase, future possible developments are defined.

Food.minder Food waste's influence on the environment and on food security has become a global issue anbd consumers are the primary generators of waste.

For instance, home food waste has increased in recent years as a result of changing lifestyles, rapid industrialization, and socioeconomic and demographic shifts.

By examining the factors that contribute to food waste habits and actions, and how consumers make food choices and the factors that influence sustainable choices, the objective of this project is to comprehend these implications, identify potential design opportunities, and conceptualize a proper solution that addresses the problem.

BACKGROUND In general terms, food waste is the phenomenon of the loss of food still edible along the production chain up to the final consumer. Food waste not only contributes to environmental pollution, but also represents an enormous waste of resources.

In Europe, around 53% of the food waste generated occurs in households, amounting to around 47 million tons per year. Final consumers contribute significantly to the total amount of waste generated. The objective of the project is therefore to find a design solution that can improve the problem of food waste at a household level, assisting the consumer in reducing avoidable food waste.

CONCEPT All foods contain microorganisms that absorb nutrients and release gases and acids as byproducts of their metabolism. During this process, different foods release different volatile organic compounds. By measuring the concentration of these gases in the air through the use of sensors, it is possible to more accurately detect when a product is becoming unsafe for consumption.

Among the different categories of food, those that usually contribute most to waste have been identified, namely perishable products such as fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains.

All foods contain microorganisms that absorb nutrients and release gases and acids as byproducts of their metabolism. During this process, different foods release different volatile organic compounds. By measuring the concentration of these gases in the air through the use of sensors,

it is possible to more accurately detect when a product is becoming unsafe for consumption. Each food category has similar spoilage characteristics, cereals and rice emit carbon dioxide as a result of insect infestation or mold formation, fruits and vegetables release short-chain alcohols such as ethylene and ethanol, fish degradation produces trimethylamine oxide, while microbial activity in meat leads to the production of ammonia, carbon dioxide and trimethylamine.

Food minder is a family of intelligent containers designed for different food categories, mainly perishable products that contribute the most to food waste, such as fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains, that controls in real time the state of freshness of products. A real-time freshness monitoring system for household food consisting of smart containers that are able to detect the safety status of food and optimize its consumption.

At this stage, details such as quantities, units of measure and images related to the food item can be entered. The user can configure the smart container by attaching the sensor to the respective item following the app's instructions.

While shopping, the user can control what they need to buy by automatically generating a shopping list based on what is in the inventory.

If the sensor detects that a food item is close to spoiling or has already gone bad, it sends a notification to the user.

The app is able to give inspiration for recipes based on what the user has in the house or make suggestions by prioritizing foods that need to be eaten first.

After an item is consumed, deleting it from the inventory list will automatically disconnect the container from the food. The sensor can be separated from the container for easy cleaning.

DETAILS The containers are integrated with carbon nanotube-based gas sensors and embedded in an RFID circuit that wirelessly communicates the food's status with the smartphone in real time. The sensor is incorporated inside a plastic shell to protect the circuit from any liquid that may cause damage. It is fixed in the internal part of the lid through a pressure joint.

Containers has three different sizes or to suit different usage needs. The sensor can be detached from the container to ensure easy cleaning, both containers and sensors are color matched to their respective food category. Each container is designed to provide the best storage condition for each food category.

MOBILE APP The mobile application serves as the primary tool through which the user can set up and unlink sensors from their corresponding items, check the freshness state of food, regulate what is available or lacking at the home, and explore recipes and meal ideas given by another user.

In order to maximize grocery shopping, the scheduling function allows the user to arrange and plan their meals in advance. Meanwhile the app is also able to generate optimized shopping lists based on consumer habits and what’s available at home.

It is possible to establish a social network around the user's profile, which stimulates the sharing of information about recipe ideas, food saving techniques, and the observation of other users' food wasting levels as a point of reference. A report about the household consumption and wastage levels is made available to the user. When people have the opportunity to share this information with their communities, it can motivate them to do better, to improve their dietary practices, and to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
