Ephesians 2:10 2019-20 Spiritual Formation Theme Verse Juniors and seniors in 2019 chose Ephesians 2:10 as the school year’s spiritual formation theme. The year featured activities crafted around being “Created” for, because of, among, with, by and in Christ Jesus.

The Lipscomb Academy football field has been replaced with artificial turf by FieldTurf®, which has a much higher success rate helping with injury prevention over natural grass. See more details on the new turf on page 23.

A message from...

Have you heard of David’s mighty warriors? As I was reading through 2 Samuel, I noticed the mention of this group and their brave deeds. One verse in particular stood out to me: “Benaiah … also slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.” - 2 Samuel 23:20. It was shared so casually, especially with the use of the word “also”.

Don’t let the … fool you into thinking that I left something contrary out. In fact, I left out several other brave deeds that might have helped prove my point. However, I think this much will do.

As I stepped into this new role, I saw around me fragments of timidity, apprehension and uncertainty.

Fortunately, I also saw hope, optimism and a desire for boldness. Now that was a fire I was excited to stoke.

Even in the midst of a situation necessitating an “abundance of caution”, I heard from our families an appeal for leadership. Not just from me as a leader within the academy but leadership by the school itself.

Be the school that determines the path forward.

Be the school that others look to for guidance.

Be confident!

What I really heard in all of this was a plea: Don’t let fears or doubts keep Lipscomb Academy from doing what God has called it to do.

I hope you see our leadership in action not only in response to your requests but also as our way to say, “Thank you for the sacrifices you have made and to thank you for your trust in us!”

We are called to be bold, and that is what you can expect. Great things await us!

Critical to the success of any institution is its mission that is used as a guiding rudder to help navigate deep waters. As the Academy faced significant challenges last year, important decisions were made, drawing from the school’s commitment to prepare students for collegiate and global experiences within an intentionally gracious Christian community.

So much occurred within just a few weeks. Town hall meetings and difficult conversations took place to examine the diversity and cultural environment of the school. With only the week of spring break to prepare, teachers and staff pivoted to remote classes on Zoom as the pandemic closed schools across the country. And, there was the national search for a new head of school to replace Greg Glenn, who returned to Alabama. Dr. Brad Schultz began in this role on June 1. Dr. Schultz is a strategic leader who served most recently as the head of school at Cross Schools in Bluffton, South Carolina, and spent 17 years in various roles at Greater Atlanta Christian School. I am so very pleased to welcome him, his wife Monica and son Dawson to the Lipscomb community.

While there was significant disruption in the 2019-2020 academic year, there was also historic growth.

On the Lower School’s Brewer Campus, the Solly School for students with special needs welcomed its first student. While 5,000 square feet of space is still under construction, when completed, this unique space will offer an activity room for physical therapy filled with tailored equipment that meets the unique needs of its students, ceiling lifts, a sensory room, conference rooms and flex spaces that will be used for occupational therapy, speech and other pertinent supports. The full 22,000-square-foot expansion of the lower school grades PreK-5 and the Solly School will be occupied in January 2021. With a cost of $16.5 million, it is the largest academic construction project in Lipscomb’s history.

At the high school, Super Bowl champion Trent Dilfer began a new era of Mustang football when he began his first season as head coach. Immediate enhancements included pre-game community concerts and a high-tech makeover of the weight room and training facilities. And after the 2019 season, a new turf field was installed.

With this annual report, I invite you to read more about Lipscomb Academy which remains a vibrant Christ-centered community that is committed to equipping students with resiliency beyond the COVID era for a lifetime of learning and service. Perhaps never has the value of its mission been more clear as it continues to equip students with the ability to think deeply and cross-culturally while exploring who they are and discovering who God wants them to be.

Reaching above and beyond

New Head of School strives to go beyond education to transformation Brad Schultz’s resume includes all the hallmarks of a strategic leader in education: serving as a principal, overseeing a capital expansion, a doctorate in education.

But Schultz’s leadership goes beyond the standard educational accomplishments, and he considers it his mission to ensure completion of eternal and larger goals for his students as well.

Schultz, who became Lipscomb Academy’s new Head of School in June, boosted enrollment and capital expansion at Cross Schools in Bluffton, South Carolina, and was also selected as one of twelve principals across the nation to be an educational researcher for Apple.

He’s a leader who laid the groundwork of offering high school grades for 2020-21 at Cross Schools and who also was one of three teachers in the state of Georgia to participate in Earth Explorer, travelling throughout the nation to teach in unique learning environments.

As an educator for the last two decades, he has focused on classroom learning innovation in both primary and secondary education, driven by perpetual learning and innovation. Now at Lipscomb, he’s working to inspire students and faculty to look beyond traditional classroom learning to achieve transformative growth.

“There are many things that go into quality learning, but the key ingredient is enthusiasm,” said Schultz, who not only educates, but who also led a varsity boys’ tennis team in Georgia to five state championships.

“I am very much looking forward to partnering with faculty, staff, students and parents as together we build boldly on this solid foundation and continue to transform the lives of our students,” said Schultz.

“In Christian education, we have a much larger goal than just ensuring our students accomplish their educational goals, which is extremely humbling and rewarding, and I look forward to continuing this journey at Lipscomb Academy.”

During his most recent three-year tenure as head of school at Cross Schools, Schultz led the school to increase in overall enrollment by 56 percent, student retention by 15 percent and students of color by 150 percent. Schultz also oversaw the construction of a $10 million facility expansion, including a makerspace lab, an environmental learning center, a regulation-size soccer field, a full-size gymnasium and an upper grades educational learning wing.

Prior to his role at Cross Schools, Schultz spent 17 years at Greater Atlanta Christian School where he held the roles of teacher, assistant principal, principal and chief innovation officer, an appropriate role for someone who partnered with Microsoft designers to create virtual reality software through the HoloLens technology project.

As a champion of inclusivity and diversity, Schultz focused his dissertation on an independent Christian school’s intentional efforts to significantly diversify its student body after decades in existence.

Stated in Schultz’s dissertation, “It is not uncommon for a river to change its course over a long period of time. This is typically due to naturally occurring events like erosion and flooding. There are times, however, when people reroute rivers to either bring water to designated areas or to direct the water elsewhere to avoid flooding. Either way, there are often unexpected outcomes and unintended consequences that must be addressed."

Leadership to meet greater goals

Lipscomb Academy leadership brings fresh vision, diversity of experience and insight The year 2020 will likely be remembered as a year of challenges, but the Lipscomb Academy community may well remember it as a year that launched new energy, diverse perspective and vision in the mission of the 2-year-old through 12th grade institution.

In addition to welcoming new Head of School Brad Schultz (M.Ed., Ed.S., Ed.D.), the leadership of the academy has been expanded and reorganized to provide closer interactions and foster deeper relationships with students and their parents at each level of the institution. As the academy moves forward in its ambitious plans to provide an innovative learning environment for students, Lipscomb officials have intentionally assembled a robust leadership team with diverse educational experiences, life stories and insight.

In response to the perspectives and values of its family community, the academy has established an associate head of school and assistant head of school position (synonymous to a principal and assistant principal) for each level: the lower school (age two through fourth grade), the middle school (fifth through eighth grades) and the upper school (ninth through twelfth grade). The expanded leadership structure includes five faculty and staff members who have or will earn a doctoral degree by May 2021, one former professional football player and two with corporate management experience.

Academics Jesse Savage (M.Ed., Candidate Ed.D.) Associate Head of Upper School Savage has 14 years of service at Lipscomb Academy and a total of 16 years’ experience in both public and independent schools. At Lipscomb, Savage has held various roles in teaching and curriculum development, as educator in both the middle and high schools, as assistant principal, as dean of academics and faculty development, and in coaching middle and high school teams.

Ken Robinson

Assistant Head of Upper School An 18-year veteran educator, Robinson taught and coached at four schools in Georgia. He was also a linebacker and team captain for the University of South Carolina NCAA Division I football team and played two seasons for the NFL’s Washington Redskins. Prior to his career in academia, Robinson successfully spent 14 years in leadership roles as a trainer and logistics administrator for Rocor International and Swift Transportation.

Casey Farris (M.Ed., Principal Certification Texas) Associate Head of Middle School and Mustang Life For the last 22 years, Farris has worked in Christian education, including most recently as Lipscomb Academy interim head of school this spring and as associate head of school for advancement for three years. Before moving to Nashville to serve at the academy, Farris worked as head of school at Cornerstone Christian Academy and in various capacities at Westbury Christian School in Houston.

Crystal Hastings (M.Ed., Ed.S., Ed.D.) Assistant Head of Middle School Educator and administrator Hastings brings 23 years of teaching and leadership to Lipscomb. Hastings served as principal and assistant principal at Christiana Middle School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Prior to leading in an administrative capacity, she taught high school English and journalism for four years in Williamson County (Tennessee) Schools and 11 years at Antioch High School in Nashville.

Allen Long (MBA, M.Ed., Candidate Ed.D.) Associate Head of Lower School After 22 years as a corporate executive, Long switched career paths to dedicate his talent and passion to teaching children. He was tenured faculty at Edmondson Elementary School in Brentwood, Tennessee, before arriving at Lipscomb Academy in 2019 to serve as head of upper school. Prior to his career in education, Long served in leadership roles in human resources and various operational capacities for companies, including Tractor Supply Company, Carter’s/ OshKosh B’Gosh Childrenswear and Batten & Shaw Inc. Katy Flatt (M.Ed., Ed.D., ELL Endorsement) Assistant Head of Lower School Flatt joined Lipscomb Academy’s Lower School in 2019 as the assistant dean of academics. In her 12 years working in education, Flatt has taught first, second, third, fifth and sixth grades; and worked as an instructional coach, a math Response to Intervention coordinator, a data analyst for English Language Arts and math, and professional development leader for Williamson County (Tennessee) Schools.

Advancement Eric Adams (MBA) Associate Head of School for Advancement A 10-year fundraising industry veteran, Adams served as director of annual and leadership giving at Franklin Road Academy. During his tenure at FRA, he helped grow the annual fund by over 30 percent and cultivated a portfolio of nearly 150 leadership prospects. Adams was formerly executive director of annual giving at the YMCA of Middle Tennessee and was director of patron engagement for the Nashville Symphony.

Athletics Michelle York (CMAA) Associate Head of School for Athletics York became associate head of school for athletics in 2019 after serving at Heritage Christian School as director of athletics (AD) for seven years, assistant AD for nine years and as varsity volleyball head coach for 16 years. In the Heritage AD role, she oversaw 18 high school sports, 17 middle school sports and more than 100 coaches, led Heritage Christian into a new conference and directed the implementation of a major $1.2 million athletics facilities plan. She also served as an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Mississippi for eight years and as head volleyball coach at Christian Brothers University.

Enrollment, Finance and Operations Jerold Givens (MBA) Associate Head of Enrollment, Finance and Operations A corporate marketing executive, Givens joined the academy in 2016 to oversee external affairs, including enrollment, communications, marketing and facilities.

Prior to relocating to Nashville, he spent 23 years at Texas Instruments serving in various strategic marketing, customer relations and organizational development capacities.

Our path is pointed in an upward trajectory, focused on the eternal C.S. Lewis once said, “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.”

Lewis understood that difficult experiences generate personal growth similar to the process of carbon under pressure and intense heat creating a diamond. Because growth can be burdensome, it requires self-reflection, humility and the determination and ability to continue moving forward. After having traveled through a complicated period of circumstances, we found that hardships intersected with opportunities of grace and growth.

The events of the 2019-20 academic year rattled Lipscomb Academy as many unique obstacles presented themselves. Voices were heard.

Emotions were conveyed. Boldness was articulated.

And as a result, excellence was recommitted. Our path was indeed jarring, yet we remain committed to our missional journey.

Hiring educators of color who are exceptionally qualified and competent must be a priority for the academy. Equity growth is essential so that the academy may better reflect all communities it serves. Too often, diversity initiatives are limited to the admission process rather than involving the entire institution. Looking at recent faculty, staff and administrators hired, this intentional initiative has already been placed in action for the 2020-21 academic year.

In order to construct trusting relationships, effective, frequent and transparent communication is paramount. Leadership understands that in order to feel connected to a community, one must be informed and feel valued. Therefore, the academy has committed to sharing weekly updates and informing the community of essential decisions that affect the institution as a whole.

Just as the body of Christ is made up of many parts, the Lipscomb Academy community is comprised of many ideas, beliefs and values, and each individual is important to the school. Responding with Resilience

Lipscomb responds to COVID-19 with new instructional skills, new technology and emergency plans

The Lipscomb Academy family found itself challenged like never before this past school year with the COVID-19 physical distancing guidelines forcing the academy to suspend in-person learning as of March 23.

Lipscomb Academy rose to the challenge, however, transitioning to a virtual learning environment rapidly. Then, following local, regional and national educational standards, the academy ended the year with teachers delivering instruction, connecting with students and assessing for mastery in new ways that will forever change the traditional approaches and methods of instruction.

Surveys taken throughout the spring semester showed that parents at the lower school appreciated projects that took learning outside of technology, such as hands-on science labs.

In the upper grades, student study groups were established, and students became more responsible for their own learning. Parents affirmed that there was more effective technology usage in

the classrooms by both teachers and students and an increase in teachers connecting with students via Zoom at grade level.

The fall 2020 semester started with teachers even better prepared and with enhanced technology to improve both in-person, and if needed, virtual learning throughout the 2020-21 school year.

Prior to the start of the fall semester, teachers underwent additional technology training on new learning management systems, Screencastify, Seesaw and Schoology, that have been implemented at the lower school. Technology staff researched and purchased OWL and Logitech livestream cameras so students at home are receiving the same level of instruction as those physically in the classroom.

Finally, Lipscomb Academy established four learning models to potentially be used in stages if the need for hybrid scenarios becomes evident.

New spaces. New equipment. New opportunities.

Enhancement of the Lipscomb Academy campus continued at full speed throughout the 2019-20 school year with highly desired projects such as a new air-conditioning system in the auxiliary gymnasium and upgrades to the cafeteria.

Creating an outdoor space for student flex time and lunch, six all-weather tables and umbrellas were placed in the courtyard outside of the upper school library.

A sidewalk was constructed to provide safe pedestrian travel on Caldwell Lane from the upper school weight room to The Highlands.

An HVAC unit was purchased and installed in the auxiliary gym to provide additional space for students during lunch.

A landing station with charging capabilities was added on the far wall in the Mustang Cafe allowing for student collaboration during flex time, as well as an expanded lunch area option.

New signage for the Mustang Cafe was installed above the restructured service area that includes an added second hot food line.

In order to provide outdoor space for lunch and classroom instruction, a large event tent was secured on the grounds between Harding Hall and Acuff Chapel.

Brewer Campus redefined Historic investment in your students’ future

The corner of Granny White Pike and Harding Place continues to be transformed as construction of the $16.5 million, 55,000-square-foot expansion of the lower school facility has sprouted from the ground and is expected to begin use in January of 2021.

Students from age two to fourth grade are already enjoying a renovation of the existing building, including new paint, ceilings, lighting and flooring in all public areas to provide a more consistent look and feel from one end of the existing building to the other end of the new building.

The new innovative spaces at the lower school are being designed to foster inquiry, project-based learning and student collaboration with a makerspace incorporated into the multi-purpose learning commons. The words “Solly School” are now proudly and prominently displayed on the exterior of the Brewer Campus as workers continue to make this space ready to serve our exceptional population of students.

When the Solly School space is completed, it will house speech, occupational and physical therapies provided onsite through an outside vendor for our exceptional population of students.

Stepping up in the face of COVID

New technology and wellness resources safeguard students’ health From outdoor meeting options to new wellness staff and facilities, Lipscomb Academy worked diligently throughout the spring and summer to bring in new equipment and operations to ensure a safe return to campus for all students.

Newly purchased technology allows students the flexibility to learn at home when and if needed as well as the safety to be with their classmates on campus.

New equipment, such as hand sanitizing stations and the Mustang on the Run section of the cafeteria, encourage students to practice healthy behaviors.

With an increase in health and wellness staff, both the upper school and the lower school now have well and sick areas within the nurses' clinics to address students’ health concerns.

Meeting OWL cameras provide 360 degrees field of view allowing remote learners to see and hear all instruction in the classroom.

An upper school classroom was reconfigured to house a new clinic with separate areas for well and sick students.

At the lower school, the conversion of an adjoining room to the clinic provided additional space to meet the wellness needs of our youngest student population.

Sanitation stations were placed around campus stocked and continually refilled with hand sanitizer.

Thermal cameras, located at each main entrance on campus, feature non-contact temperature measurement to monitor every person that enters the building.

Mustang on the Go, a boxed lunch dining option, allows students to purchase meals in the lobby outside the cafeteria.

Logitech ConferenceCams, iPads and laptops were purchased to facilitate innovate learning for students.

ACADEMICS

2019-20 focused on enhanced instruction and new opportunities to learn The school year rolled in with a new focus on defining what quality instruction looks like in Lipscomb Academy’s classrooms. Through a partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) and its CEO Dr. Candice McQueen, academy leaders were equipped with a researched observation rubric to identify effective teacher performance in three domains of teachingplanning, instruction and environment.

NIET continues to work with the academy to provide coaching tools and resources, online observation and scoring administration support, professional learning community (PLC) information and execution, and a mentor-teacher model for teacher growth and retention purposes.

The upper school launched a new schedule that includes a Freshmen Seminar course, double class periods for writing and labs, and flex periods for collaborative work. The new schedule closely aligns with Lipscomb University’s class schedule to more easily accommodate students in dual enrollment classes.

The lower school’s gifted program, which challenges students to think deeply and abstractly about reading texts and to enhance their thinking and problem-solving abilities in mathematics, entered its second year in 2019-20 with a boosted enrollment. This program, unique among local peer schools, replaces the regular grade-level curriculum with accelerated and enriched instruction at an appropriately challenged level.

Pat Wood named National Christian School Association Teacher of the Year From the time that Patricia Wood turned 11, she always knew she wanted to be a teacher.

When she attended Lipscomb University, she decided that she wanted to be a physical education teacher, and in less than a year after graduation, she obtained that job, setting her on a path to become the National Christian School Association Teacher of the Year 45 years later in 2020.

Wood has spent 42 of the 45 years in her teaching career at Lipscomb, teaching physical education, Bible, math and pre-algebra. She has served as the middle school math chair and has been the seventh-grade team leader for many years.

After only two years of working in physical education, a peer of Wood’s suggested that she become a sixth-grade math teacher. She took this opportunity and has loved teaching math ever since.

Over the years, Wood has opened the eyes of her students to see a world where they belong and where they are loved. She constantly reminds her students to this day that they are the writers of their own stories and that God will use His plan and His timing to implement whatever it is that they choose to do with their lives.

Wood is no stranger to awards as she has won two Teacher of the Year Awards at Lipscomb Academy in 1992 and in 2007. During her career, she has been chosen to participate in the National Middle School Convention and the Mid-School Math Conference.

When students enter Wood’s classroom, the first thing they notice is her warm energy and encouraging spirit.

“The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing the kids you taught several years ago going out into the world and chasing their dreams,” she said.

Sarah Robinson named Tennessee Educators of Color Alliance Fellow Sarah Robinson, AP human geography and AP world history teacher, was one of 12 educators across the state to be selected to participate in the inaugural Tennessee Educators of Color Alliance (TECA) fellowship program, designed to provide proven educators with the opportunity to develop their leadership potential.

During a 10-month time period, the fellows will assess the top priorities in Tennessee education, collaborate with state and district policymakers and encourage the retention of teachers of color in the school system so that Tennessee’s schools better reflect their student bodies.

Fellows are required to complete a capstone project. Robinson will help Lipscomb Academy administration network and make connections with other educators of color so the academy may better reflect all communities it serves.

UNIVERSITY OPPORTUNITY Students in the Ignite program had the opportunity to hold a mock legislative session on the floor of the Tennessee House Chamber.

Lipscomb University provides one-of-a-kind careerexploration opportunities Each year, the faculty, staff and the resources of Lipscomb University are brought to bear on the education and development of all Lipscomb Academy students. The 2019-20 year brought a wealth of unique career exploration, wellness and cultural diversity experiences for our students.

Twenty-four juniors and seniors involved in the health sciences Ignite group enjoyed a graduate study-level experience when they toured the university’s newest anatomy laboratory, housing several human cadavers used by the physician assistant studies program.

Kelly Smart, assistant professor of physician assistant studies, displayed various body parts to the students and described the work of a physician assistant. The health sciences Ignite group also visited a Lipscomb pharmacy lab, learning to make chapstick as an example of compounding drugs, and learned how to take vital signs from Lipscomb’s nursing faculty.

The Ignite leadership group received a behindthe-scenes tour of the State Capitol and legislative complex in an all-day event hosted by Amanda Martin, Lipscomb University’s director of neighborhood, community and government.

Students met with four legislators whose staffers are alumni of Lipscomb University.

Students attended a legislative committee meeting, held a mock legislative session in the House Chamber and had lunch with Lipscomb University students participating in a legislative internship.

A sophomore English class partnered with the Office of Intercultural Diversity to meet with students who have refugees in their families, conversing with them after doing research in world perspectives and reading books about fictional and real-life refugees.

Student-athletes to enjoy enhanced safety, maximum performance Through a generous gift by an anonymous donor, the Lipscomb Academy football field has been replaced with artificial turf by FieldTurf®. By using turf, the academy will conserve financial resources by eliminating the need to re-sod, mow, water and line the field and will positively impact the environment as there is no need to treat the turf with pesticides or herbicides.

FieldTurf® has a much higher success rate helping with injury prevention over natural grass. On average, football concussion injuries are reduced by 44 percent and ACL injuries by 43 percent. Furthermore, a heavyweight infill was selected, thereby, leading to lower incidence of total injuries and severe injuries.

FieldTurf®is certified by the International Organization for Standardization and by Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. This brand is the only turf to receive third-party testing for player safety on its fields.

The addition of new equipment in the football performance center adds sixteen stations of state-of-the-art Sorinex equipment; Swiss Swing, used to reintroduce an injured player back to the field; Power Plate; and two Keiser functional trainers that allow for training rotary movement and power.

With the renovation of both weight rooms, including the weight room located under the upper school auxiliary gym, enhanced performance centers are now accessible for the entire student body through fitness classes.

These renovations have expedited our ability to install methodologies based around teaching movement, core strength and proper lifting techniques. Sixteen racks, numerous dumbbell and kettlebell racks and increased space also give the athletics program the necessary tools to teach effectively and efficiently.

Saying goodbye to longtime coach and friend Deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Lynn Griffith on June 13, 2020, Lipscomb Academy is forever grateful for the legacy he leaves behind. Coach Griffith, a veteran icon on Lipscomb University’s tennis courts, began coaching at the academy in 2010. He coached both girls’ and boys’ middle school and high school tennis and high school swimming. In 2016, he coached the boys’ tennis team to an undefeated season (20-0) and a TSSAA State Championship, the first team state championship for that program in more than four decades.

Coach Griffith's son Samuel was a member of the class of 2020.

Coach Griffith loved coaching at the middle and high school levels after coaching at the collegiate level for many years. He was known for reminding his players to: “Just take it one point at a time.” When academy alumnus Nathan Pugh, a studentathlete on the boys’ tennis team during Coach Griffith’s inaugural year to coach at the academy, was asked what he remembers about Coach Griffith, his reply was instant: “Coach taught us tennis at the foot of the cross. He led us to Jesus first and then to victory on the tennis court. He taught us many, many things that we’ll carry with us forever: loving Jesus, serving others and the game of tennis. In that order.”

Strong year of new initiatives The athletics department introduced several new programs this past academic year benefiting both student-athletes and coaches.

School Champions State Bowler Freshman Jenna Hedgepath won the 2020 individual TSSAA state bowling title and was named 2020 Tennessee Miss Bowling of the Year. She was selected to the All-Midstate bowling team by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association. In June, Hedgepath was named the 2020 Tennessean Girls’ Bowler of the Year.

Girls’ Bowling Lipscomb Academy won its first bowling team title when the girls' bowling team became the TSSAA Division II State Champions by defeating Friendship Christian in early 2020. Casey Mobley, Jenna Hedgepath and Maddie Yates all qualified for the TSSAA state individual tournament.

The boys’ bowling team also qualified for the TSSAA state tournament, and Samuel Griffith qualified for the boys’ TSSAA individual state tournament as well.

Additionally, Coach Diana Benson was named All Midstate Girls' Bowling Coach of the Year.

Girls’ Middle School Basketball Congratulations to Coach Emily High and our girls’ middle school basketball team for winning the HVAC Championship over Ensworth and finishing the season with a record of 20-2. For the last three years, the team has finished first in the regular season and won the HVAC tournament two of those years.

Indoor Track and Field Legend Mikele Vickers was named 2020 indoor state champion for both the long jump (18’ 8.5”) and triple jump (37’ 0”). Vickers, a track and field student-athlete since the age of eight, has amassed many titles in her career. She has held the Amateur Athletic Union national long jump title for 10-year-old girls since 2012 and won a total of 13 AAU national medals, including two gold medals. As a high school student-athlete, Vickers has earned five outdoor and four indoor state titles. Currently, she holds the Lipscomb Academy school record in long jump, triple jump, 100M, 200M, 4x100M relay and 4x200M relay. This is her second state title in the long jump event. She amassed many titles all while having to miss her senior season due to the cancellation of spring sports

by COVID-19.

This summer, a new record board was purchased and installed at the McCadams Athletic Center. This board recognizes and highlights the accomplishments of Lipscomb Academy’s track and field and cross country student-athletes.

2020 McCadams Athletes of the Year Congratulations to the 2020 McCadams Athletes of the Year. Seniors Mikele Vickers and Mason Long, in addition to dedicating countless hours to their respective sports, showed grit, determination and character, leaving a tremendous legacy behind for other Lipscomb Academy athletes.

As a member of both the volleyball and indoor and outdoor track teams, Vickers became one of the academy’s most decorated athletes in school history.

During her three years as part of the track team, she won nine state championships and six school records.

Long, a multi-talented athlete, competed in soccer, bowling and football. He showed genuine leadership on all three teams and is the ultimate team player.

Mustangs launch inaugural concert series in 2019 As part of Coach Trent Dilfer’s vision for Mustang football, Lipscomb Academy partnered with Lipscomb University to launch a new concert series coinciding with home football games. The inaugural event boasted a record number turnout of approximately 2,500 fans in attendance to hear headliner singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow.

The event was fashioned as a welcoming community festival for the general public. Week two brought another record crowd with fans enjoying a concert from The Voice contestant Ele Ivory. For Homecoming, singer/songwriter Jerrod Niemann entertained the crowd from the Stampede stage, and Lipscomb Academy’s own Chaffin Brothers captivated fans with their talent to close out the concert series at the end of regulation season.

Winning the day with transformational coaching Since much of student-athletes’ time outside of academics is spent with their coaches, there is no doubt coaches play a significant role in their lives. Lipscomb Academy seeks to help student-athletes win in all areas of their lives by offering transformational coaching that moves beyond the respective fields of play and penetrates into the lives of student-athletes.

Commencing with coaches who know and articulate “why” they coach, Lipscomb then equips its coaches to create an environment not singularly-focused on winning seasons, but instead centered on our allencompassing higher purpose.

As part of the academy’s intentional investment in student-athletes through transformational coaching, five coaches were appointed to reinvigorate the soccer, golf, basketball, and softball programs during the 201920 academic year.

Ryan Bouch

Director and Head Coach of Golf

With the vision to establish a comprehensive soccer program for both middle and high school, Lipscomb created the new position of director of soccer and appointed Ryan Bouch, former British semi-professional soccer player and coach, as the first director. Previously, Bouch led the varsity boys’ soccer team as head coach during the 2018-19 academic year.

PGA pro Ben Pellicani was appointed head coach and director of golf. With a holistic approach to coaching that includes strength and conditioning and nutrition, Pellicani has a deep appreciation for the spiritual aspect of what Lipscomb Academy aims to accomplish with transformational coaching.

As director, he has implemented a skills development program for all ages and both boys and girls, thus providing middle school student-athletes with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of soccer. In addition to coaching, Bouch has also focused on creating a comprehensive spiritual formation program for soccer student-athletes. As their coach, he invests in their lives so as to understand them as individuals first.

Bouch coached ages 13 and under and 16 and under on soccer teams in the United Kingdom. As a player, he played in the Cambridge City youth soccer system followed by semi-professional stints for New Market Town and Bishop Stortford Football Clubs, as well as for Debden and Sewards End’s men’s Cambridgeshire league.

Ben Pellicani

Director and Head Boys’ and Girls’ Coach of Soccer

While serving on the coaching staff at Lipscomb University for five years, he helped the program reach new milestones as the Bisons qualified for the NCAA DI postseason twice, once reaching the national championship.

As an instructor, he has been recognized by Golf Digest as a “Best in State” and “Best Young Teacher in America” golf instructor (2017, 2018 and 2019). Pellicani was also named Tennessee PGA Section, Middle Tennessee Chapter Teacher of the Year.

Pellicani served for three years as the director and head coach of the Mike Bender Elite Golf Academy.

While at MBEGA, his students claimed over 30 junior titles. He also worked with two students who have been ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Becky Starks

Head Girls’ Basketball Coach A 19-year-basketball coaching veteran who has professionally coached at the University of Mississippi, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Harding Academy, Grace Christian Academy and the Hutchison School, Becky Starks stepped into the role of head girls’ basketball coach during spring 2020.

Starks is an all-time three-point leader at the NCAA Division I University of Mississippi.

At Harding, she was instrumental in creating a strength and conditioning program for female student-athletes.

Under her tutelage as head basketball coach, Harding won the TSSAA Division II Class A state championship (2010) and eight district championships.

Additionally, she coached the Tennessee Celtics in the AAU Junior Olympic Games (2002-04) and coached with the Tennessee Tigers AAU organization for 10 years.

With her leadership, enthusiasm for program development and heart for God, her expertise will invigorate the girls’ basketball program and strengthen the faith of her players.

Kevin Starks

Head Boys’ Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director Abilene Christian University athlete Kevin Starks joined the Mustangs after 22 years of leadership and coaching.

Over the last 20 seasons as a head coach, he has coached his teams to the playoffs 19 times.

He has coached as head varsity boys’ basketball coach at Dallas Christian, Fort Worth Christian High School and Harding Academy. During his 15 years at Harding, he coached his team to eight semi-finals and four state championship games.

As a result of his strong leadership and relational investment in his student-athletes athletically, academically and spiritually at Harding, Starks was awarded TSSAA Tennessee Coach of the Year and twice was named Memphis MOST Favorite: Best Sports Coach. Additionally, he was named Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee Coach of the Year.

Starks also served as associate head of school and director of athletics at Harding Academy. Because of his talent, work ethic and commitment to the advancement of all 16 sports at Harding, Starks received the TSSAA A.F. Bridges Athletic Director of the Year designation.

Josh Story

Head Softball Coach Former collegiate athlete Josh Story was hired as high school head softball coach. Story began his collegiate baseball career at Trevecca Nazarene University before transferring to Lipscomb University. Upon graduation, he served one season as a graduate assistant coach for Lipscomb University’s baseball team.

After playing baseball for nearly two decades, Story switched gears to become a softball coach for ages 12 and under. Since 2012, Story has coached travel softball.

Story believes that by marrying sports knowledge and athletic strength with exceptional experiences and genuine interactions, he can transform student-athletes holistically, making a Kingdom impact that influences them well beyond athletics.

FINE ARTS The visual arts department made history Art teacher Erin Rickelton and seniors Annabelle Parrish and Mattie Ree Neal were recognized at the 2020 Middle Tennessee Scholastic Art Awards, and Neal was awarded the American Visions Medal and Gold Medal status for her artwork.

Out of more than 1,600 juried works of art from 44 schools, Lipscomb Academy’s Parrish and Neal were two of only five finalists for the American Visions Medal, a national-level recognition.

Due to COVID-19, the annual ceremony usually held at Carnegie Hall in New York City was instead presented online. Prior to the pandemic, Neal had been invited to exhibit her award-winning artwork at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center Parsons School of Design at The New School.

In the regional competition, academy students also received five Honorable Mentions, four Silver Keys and four Gold Keys.

Additionally, Parrish’s artwork was chosen to be included in the 2020 art exhibition “Teens Take the Frist” at the Frist Art Museum. As a part of the Frist’s vision to inspire people through art to look at their world in new ways, more than 50 artworks and reproductions created by young artists from Cheatham, Davidson, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties were showcased.

Art faculty recognized as an outstanding educator Erin Rickelton was recognized in the 2020 Middle Tennessee Scholastic Art Awards as an outstanding educator whose dedication, commitment and guidance were represented by student work selected for national honors.

Rickelton has taught art and journalism at Lipscomb Academy for the last 22 years. Since joining the fine arts department, she has been instrumental in adding nine classes to increase the fine arts knowledge of her students, including 2D design, 3D design, painting, independent drawing, photography, AP studio art and senior show.

In 2000, after realizing that the academy did not have a platform for showcasing student artwork, Rickelton created and implemented a student art show that continues to this day.

Actively involved in multiple extracurricular activities with students, Rickelton created the Art Club and Service Club and together with Ginger Reasonover, lower school science faculty, launched the Green Club and recycling program at the academy. In 2018, Rickelton received the Living Water Volunteer of the Year Award for her project to sell student-made artwork, primarily created from reclaimed wood and other repurposed materials, which raised approximately $10,000 to build clean water wells around the world.

Lipscomb Academy Upper School Songwriting Contest The Lipscomb Academy Fine Arts Department and the LA Songwriting Club, in partnership with Lipscomb University’s George Shinn College of Entertainment & the Arts (CEA), held the first ever Lipscomb Academy Upper School Songwriting Contest this past year.

Contestants from grades 7-12 were given the opportunity to refine their songs with assistance from the CEA and to receive valuable feedback from an impressive panel of songwriters who judged the contest.

All three winners will have the opportunity to take their music to the next level in a session at Lipscomb University’s Sound Emporium studio with the assistance of the professional instructors and students of the CEA commercial music program, under the direction of the Lipscomb School of Music Director and Grammy Award-winning producer Brown Bannister.

Recognition of chorus The pandemic stopped the Lipscomb Academy chorus from performing but not before they qualified for the Tennessee Chapter of the American Choral Director's Association’s State Choral Festival. This is the 33rd consecutive year for the high school chorus to qualify for the state assessment, and the academy chorus has the honor of being the only chorus in the state to do so every year since the inception of the event.

Upper School fall play The theatre department presented Thornton Wilder’s Our Town with grades 9-12 as the fall play. This large cast produced a beautiful show that highlighted Wilder's themes of appreciating all of the special moments in life.

'Tis the Season In December, the Green Hills Mall hosted performances by the middle and high school chorus, band, strings and dance troupes.

The strings program, led by Bailey Floyd, continued to show growth this academic year with a 30 percent increase from previous year and 52 participants.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Students lead tornado relief efforts for Nashvillians In March, two of the academy’s families suffered the loss of their homes due to tornadoes that touched down in Nashville, Donelson, Hermitage and Mt. Juliet. Others experienced loss of power, shattered windows or downed trees.

Within a day, students were spending time praying for those who had lost property or loved ones during the event. Wanting to support our families in more than words, Student Life coordinated an effort to collect water bottles, and the boys’ soccer team delivered the water to those affected areas.

Additionally, students collected more than $4,170 in coins for tornado victims and donated the money to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Melanie Grogan conducted Little Lights Chapel virtually and co-taught separate chapels for pre-K and kindergarten students and faculty/staff chapels with Jonathan Sheahen. Jen Green spent time discussing the importance of self-awareness and self-discipline in the classroom and at home.

A daily student life and spiritual formation newsletter, distributed by Doug Williams, provided students with reminders and video messages from the leadership of both areas, as well as a daily spiritually formative thought.

For students in middle grades, Overflow virtual chapel continued weekly via Zoom providing students with connection and a spiritual renewing through devotionals.

What Lipscomb means to me…

Craig and Kelly Cole Parents of Alumnus Scott Cole, senior at University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and sophomore Lauren Cole I feel like it is a partnership. The teachers at Lipscomb help lighten the parenting load so much. They are educated and trained for that. It is their expertise. That proficiency is comforting and provides peace of mind.

Some of my friends talk about having to do so much work to prepare for college. But I feel like we didn’t have to do much at all because Lipscomb did so much.

What Lipscomb means to me…

James and Lauren Burton Parents of eighth-grader Micah Burton Micah has felt like he belonged from his first day at Lipscomb. That is important to us because he didn’t come to the U.S. until he was seven years old. He never went to a traditional school until he was in the fifth grade. His early childhood was drastically different from his classmates, but he has never felt different at Lipscomb. His first teacher in the fifth grade made him feel like a champion. He knew she believed in him.

Michael and Shannon Bell Parents of seventh-grader Caroline and junior Catherine The three things that really drew us to Lipscomb were a family history with the school, the strong academics and the warm and caring atmosphere from the teachers and administrators. Lipscomb is the type of place where I am confident that in times of crisis the teachers would embrace the girls and pray over them and do anything they could to prepare them and protect them.

What Lipscomb means to me…

I wanted them to have spiritual leaders for the time that I could not be there. The Art Event 2020 Lipscomb Academy hosted its 16th annual Art Event on Feb. 28-March 1 with 66 artists participating. This event continues to attract members of the Lipscomb community, as well as the Nashville area.

This year, several small Lipscomb Academy musical ensembles performed during the event, and students interacted with the guest artists through the Ignite Fine & Performing Arts cohort. Additionally, students created paintings for the silent auction booth.

This year's featured artist was Emily Little of Little E Studio, an artist based in Nashville. A long-time participant and friend of Lipscomb Academy’s Art Event, Little’s fresh palette and unique style are featured on home and gift decor nationwide.

Thanks to the support of our Nashville community, this year's event sold more than 700 pieces of art.

The Art Event 2020 raised: $40,534 For the LA Annual Fund $6,991 From the Silent Auction $17,250 From Sponsorships The silent auction featured artwork by talented Lipscomb Academy students, as well as pieces donated by many of the participating artists. Academy junior Audrey Gaither’s “Clouds Over Kenya” piece sold for a record high for student artwork sales this year.
