Council Chair Speaks: What a Great Year! Congratulations District Governors, You Rock!
I would also like to thank Michelle Faires for doing a great job as State Secretary-Treasurer. Her attention to detail kept me on track and helped to make sure that the necessary business of MD 1 was being handled timely. Michelle is always thinking ahead, making sure contracts are signed and arrangements are made for the many MD 1 events. She is an asset to MD 1 and it was my pleasure working with her.
Your service and dedication to MD 1 Lions set a new standard that will be hard to match. All because you had one main goal in mind and you ALL stayed true to it. It isn’t complicated or fancy, it is simple and honest. “Do The Right Thing” lead us through every decision made. It guided us past personal agendas and individual preferences, keeping the good of the Lions of MD 1 as our main focus. Some of your actions will have a monumental impact on MD 1 Lions for years to come. Selling the State Office Building was a major accomplishment, freeing us from the burden of a building we couldn’t fully utilize. The Funds can be used to possibly purchase a more adequate office and educate our future leaders and promote Lions Clubs throughout the State. After much research and discussion the decision to work out of a virtual office has proven to be another asset to the Lions of MD 1. By working out of the SST’s home, we are saving over $16,000 every year. This money was used for things such as grounds maintenance, taxes, and utilities. This new cushion will keep us from a dues increase for some time. It is my hope that future Councils will continue to be as fiduciary responsible, making decisions based on what is the best for all of the Lions in MD 1.

Editorial: It is History! Council of Governors, Council Chair and all MD1 State Committee Chairs, it is over and soon you will be completing one lionistic year. What you did this year will be part of history and will show your leadership ability to be remembered in years to come in your district and MD1.
It’s been an honor to have been chosen Council Chairperson and to serve with such an outstanding Council. Each District can be proud of the representation their Governor brought to MD 1. They dealt with personal issues, health issues, membership and leadership goals and many other Lions issues in their own districts as well as all of the challenges that arose on the state level. No one quit or even gave up! They remained true to their position and led by example, showing real leadership at every turn.
All lions are part of miracles took place in MD1 by helping the needy and less fortunate. As we say, ‘Where there is a need, there is a Lion,” we showed our presence with kindness and monetary help. It is great to see Lions worldwide growth in membership; however, in MD1 other than District 1A we are lacking behind. Similarly we are behind in reporting club service activities online. If we do not report our activities online, no one would know what we are doing in our communities, how many people we serve, how much money we collect as donations and how much we donate. These statistics are very important in receiving charitable donations from foundations like Bill Gates, etc.
I want to thank the Governors for their trust and support throughout the 2014-2015 Lions year. I am very proud of the accomplishments you made happen. When you ‘do the right thing’, there is no 2

As a Chairman for Disrtrict 1A & MD1 PDG’s, I request all PDG’s to work with your District Governors in making their goals reach higher heights. 2017 Centennial Convention is around the corner and we need couple of thousand volunteers. Promote this convention in your club, community and among friends and family. Let us work together as MD1 Lions and make this convention a grand success.

Just think about what it would be like if the calendar year began on July 1st. We wouldn’t have to grab our parkas to celebrate the arrival of a new year. You could engage in some alfresco dining at the local restaurant. If not at a restaurant, you might celebrate with a backyard barbeque. Nice.

My opening statement implies that there is only one month left in the 2014-2015 Lion Year. That being the case, now would be a good time to review what your Club has accomplished over the year. You should take a look at service projects, fundraisers and recruiting efforts.
PID Bud Wahl MD1 Candidate to run for II Vice President of LCI
Has your Club engaged in service projects? I would certainly hope so. After all, our motto is We Serve. Generally, a service project is a hands-on effort by your Club to help or improve the life of an individual, a group of individuals or your community. This is not done through writing a check but through physical effort. This could include helping a senior citizen perform the spring cleaning of their yard, washing their windows etc. Other possibilities: helping at a local food pantry, participating in a community recycling project, visiting a nursing home, cleaning up your neighborhood park and many others. Make sure that your community is aware of all such activities. Take photos and get them in your local newspaper. I will assume that your Club has conducted various fundraisers. If part of what you do is to send checks to other organizations that help your community, fundraisers are a must. Pork chop dinners, corn roasts, spaghetti dinners, 5K runs, Arts Shows and many other possibilities exist. Just remember, funds raised from the public are “spent” on the public. Take photos at this year’s events and use them in the publicity for next year’s event.

The Lions of Illinois cast their votes at the MD1 Convention on May 17, 2015 to endorse PID Bud Wahl to move forward in his bid to become the Second International Vice President of Lions Clubs International. Per the MD1 Constitution and ByLaws, PID Bud needed two thirds of the votes cast to receive the endorsement or 66.67%. He received 83.74% of the votes cast. This makes PID Bud eligible for consideration of this office at the International Convention in 2016 in Fukuoka, Japan.
Then you should examine your Club’s recruiting efforts. As of last month, there were 220 Clubs in Illinois that had yet to add one new member this year. Is your Club one of them? If so, you have all of June to change your status. Any Club that experiences a net growth in membership will automatically have more hands to perform those service projects. They also have more people to help at fundraisers.
PID Bud and Lion Jama understand that this is a tremendous opportunity for them as well as the Lions of Illinois. Illinois, the sixth largest multiple in North America, has had only two Presidents. Edgar Albert served from 1952-53 and Johnny Balboa served from 1974-75.

Almost every traveler loads up their car to hit the road with the idea their car will not break down and no bad things will happen at home while they are away. This year plan your trip with a few precautions for that just in case. When traveling for a distance, pack a few extra snacks and drinks with you. Put yourself a little first aid kit together along with information that you might need in an emergency such as doctors and insurance info. Add phone numbers of relatives and neighbors since we know cell phones never fail when you

The Lions Clubs International Convention in Hawaii is quickly approaching, and we are looking at two more years before the Lions of the World come to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. The MD-1 Host committee is fully committed to be ready to host this event. The Centennial Convention will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago starting on Friday, June 28 and running through Tuesday, July 4, 2017. The International Parade will be Saturday, July 1, 2017
For now, it looks like that we are well on the way to hosting the 2017 Centennial Convention in Chicago. Only once in our life time will we be able to say that “we had an active part in the Centennial Celebration in Chicago in June of 2017”. So, let’s be Proud of this honor and show the world our Pride in hosting this celebration.
In the past years, the MD-1 Host Committee has been planning their activities and realize the responsibilities that will be required by both the Sub Committee Chairpersons and the volunteers that will help during the convention. As chairman, I thank you for your patients as we prepare for this major event in the History of Our Organization.
Over the next couple of years your club can earn them all. You may find that your club may not be able to donate, but then look at doing something with other clubs as a region project where you can earn patches for all clubs involved. I would like to thank those clubs and districts that have made a donation already.
The Host Committee has been actively moving forward with it fund raising activities. As your club starts putting together their budgets for the coming years, please keep in mind the 2017 MD-1 Host Committee. We have a patch that will be given to your club for your banner showing your support to the committee. There are three levels of donations starting at $100.00, then $250.00 and finally $500.00. Each level has a different banner patch
The Council of Governors have adopted a new vest that will be worn as part of the State Marching Uniform for the up-coming International Conventions. The blue vest has the outline of the State on the back and the 2017 Host Committee information on the front panel. The vest will be available for purchase at this year’s State Convention or by order. Orders can be made through Lion Bob Block, PDG. The checks can be made out to the 2017 Lions Host Committee and mailed to Lion Bob Block, PDG. Please indicate your size that you would like for the vest.

Kirkland Lions Club members received a phone call from his sister who had lived through a devastating EF-4 tornado in Washington, IL just 18 months prior. Provided with first-hand insight, she knew that the residents’ immediate needs were cash and gift cards. She established a fund and turned the monies over to the local Kirkland Lions Club to quickly get the funds distributed to those in need. Just three days later, on the Sunday after the tornado, the Kirkland Lions Club made their first distribution of cash and gift cards to the residents. One resident said receiving this money made the difference for him to be able to have a rental car for the week. He is still trying to sort out where to live, and figure out how and what to salvage. He only had liability insurance and his car was destroyed. Another resident stated they would be able to buy shoes and pay for items to help secure their property. The hugs and tears said it all.
Kirkland Lions Club donates to the Kirkland Food Pantry At their April meeting, the Kirkland Lions Club presented a check to the Kirkland Food Pantry. This check represents 50% of the proceeds from their Friday, March 13 Meat Raffle. Established in 1992 as a joint ministry of First Lutheran and the First United Methodist Church, The Kirkland Food Pantry’s mission is to help provide nutritious food to those hungry and in need. Their goal is to provide a minimum of one week’s food supply to each client. Since their inception, KFP has added many new services and programs to better meet the needs of their clients. Perhaps one of the most important additions has been that of having fresh vegetables, fruit, and protein available. They have also started a program to provide extra food for families with children during summer break. KFP utilizes the services of approximately 20 volunteers to help stock shelves and distribute the food. According to a KPF co-administrator, "The generous Kirkland Lions Club donation will be used to help fund the additional needs of our neighbors from Fairdale and also supplement other Kirkland Food Pantry programs including Designated Nutritious Food, 'Food For Children', and Holiday Dinner Boxes.” Kirkland Lions Club Provides Relief In the evening of Thursday, April 9, the lives of many were changed forever. At approximately 7:10 a devastating EF-4 tornado ripped through the small town of Fairdale, IL and surrounding rural areas. Within an hour of the tornado, one of the

The Genoa Lions came out in force to clean-up and spread new mulch at Lions Corner Park in Genoa this past Saturday, May 2. The weather was perfect for sprucing up the park and the following Genoa

The Algonquin Lions Club awarded graduating Jacobs High School senior Trevor Lawson the Lion Ted Spella Education Award for his superior aca-
demic and extra-curricular achievements. Algonquin Lion Steve Collinsworth, the club’s education award chairman presented Trevor with a $4000 check. The Lion Ted Spella Education Award was funded by the Fifth Annual Algonquin Lions-Buffalo Wild Wing Tournaent held last August. The 2014 bean bag tournament raisd $8000 with $4000 also being given to the Algonquin Faith Food Pantry last fall. The Algonquin Lions –Buffalo Wild Wings Charity Bean Bag Tournament raised $25000 and are supported by 93 area businesses. Trevor will attend Southern Illinois University in the fall where

Day Eve. All mothers were honored with a beautiful rose and lots of dance all night. Born: Thursday, April 14, 1938. Died: Saturday, May 30, 2015 Zavorka, Barbara W. nee Zenisek passed away May 30th, 2015, age 77 years of Countryside, Illinois. Loving wife of Robert Zavorka. Proud mother of Terrie Boyd (William), Julie Finan (Phil), Scott Fisher (Jacqi) and Debbie Reno (Jason). Loving sister to Kay Zenisek, Robert Zenisek and Dorothy Zenisek. Further survived by grandchildren, great-randchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceeded in death by her parents William and Martha (Pacholski) Zenisek, siblings Richard (Maureen) Zenisek and Mary Ann Komperda (Edward) and her first husband Gerald Fisher. Barbara was a charter member of the Countryside Lioness Club and a member of the Countryside Lions Club for 31 years. She cared about helping others, especially the blind and deaf. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her name to the Lions of

Nepal Earthquake Update from LCIF In recent weeks, two massive earthquakes struck central Nepal, killing more than 8,000 people and devastating much of the region. LCIF promptly approved a US$100,000 Major Catastrophe grant to support Lions’ relief efforts. Local Lions are responding swiftly, bringing food, water, basic medicine, sanitary kits, and temporary housing to those affected. However, Nepal’s relief needs remain great; according to the UN, only 14% of the aid requested has been committed by the global community. As Lions, you can help now by donating to LCIF’s Disaster Relief fund. LCIF will continue to award grants to fund local Lions’ reconstruction projects long after emergency response teams have gone. Gifts to the LCIF Disaster Relief fund will help support local Lions as they serve their communities. To see Nepalese Lions-led relief efforts in action, visit the LCIF area on the Lions blog.
LCIF Areas of Giving Update LCIF has recognized that the “Humanitarian Needs” fund is a duplication of the “Area of Greatest Need” as both have been funding the same Lions projects. In an effort to streamline, LCIF has eliminated the “Humanitarian Needs” fund and will apply all unrestricted donations to the “Area of Greatest Need”. Neo, a puppy learning to be a guide dog for Leader dogs for the Blind, visited the Aurora Noon Lions Club with his volunteer puppy raiser, Nadine Gauer of Aurora. After a year of teaching Neo basic obedience, he will go to Rochester Hills, MI, for four months of formal guide-dog training. Students at Heineman Middle School in Huntley collected eyeglasses for the Sun City-Huntley Lions Club. The club has been doing this project for about six years. Each student is wearing a pair of eyeglasses that he/she collected. A total of over 135 pairs of eyeglasses were collected for recycling at Lions of IL Foundation.

Lion Elmer won the trophies on behalf of the Waterloo Lions Club by selling the most Sight and Sound tickets and the most Sight and Sound tickets per Capita. DGE Elmer won $500 and donated that money back to the Lions of Illinois Foundation. The money raised by the Sight and Sound raffle benefits the Foundation. Lions Club hosts "Martha's Kitchen" twice a year. They donate the food, or money to buy the food, to feed whomever wants a nice warm meal, at no cost. They served more than fifty guests at May's Dinner.
Pavilion Committee - A 24 x 32 Foot picnic pavilion was erected in observance of our 75 year anniversary. The club started fundraising in the fall of 2013. The structure was erected in the spring of 2014. Landscaping was completed this spring. Additional funds were raised above the cost of the picnic pavilion allowing the club to purchase picnic tables, sturdy waste receptacle, some benches, and an outdoor water cooler for the concession stand. low vision youths and deaf or hard of hearing youths to Camp Lions Adopt-A-Camper in Benton, IL. The club donated toward sponsoring a camper for Camp Lions. The club hosted a zone meeting. For the fourth straight year members of the club presented their Flags for Third Graders program. Lion Christy Short, shown above, was one of the club's participants that told of Lions community projects and how these projects help the school. USA Flag etiquette was explained to the students. The Harrisburg chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution helped with the program.
The SHAWNEETOWN LIONS CLUB recently sold their building. However, we want everyone to know the club is still an active viable club. We will continue to hold our meetings twice a month on the first Tuesday and the third Monday at 6:00pm. We will have our meetings at members’ homes or a local restaurant or church. The Shawneetown Lions would like to express our appreciation for the many years of support from the residents and surrounding communities who attended our monthly fish fry’s, rummage sales, poker runs and pancake breakfasts. Your support has been and will continue to be crucial for our service projects to benefit and SERVE others. The Shawneetown Lions members will continue to be active in the community with various service projects such as Flags for Third Graders in the spring, the Lions food booth during Coal Days Carnival in June, assisting the Gallatin County Historical Society with their Annual Pie & Ice Cream Social, as well as purchasing back to school supplies for Gallatin Co. School children. We will also continue giving our Lions $500 Scholarship to a qualifying Gallatin Co. graduating senior and collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids. As always we will be present for Halloween Trunk-n-Treat on the Mall and will continue to collect and recycle aluminum cans & metal keys for money to help send blind or
The MARION LIONS CLUB donated 882 plastic and 2,176 metal frame eyeglasses. 635 of the glasses were collected and sent to the Marion Lions Club's sister club, the Osnabrucker Land Lions Club in Germany. The sister club wanted to help the Marion Lions Club.

For the third year the Stillman Valley Lions have purchased 3 library-bound copies of each of the 20 books in the Award-winning titles for the Jr. High Library. The library has to purchase an additional 3 copies of each book in paperback to keep up with the demand. The books are checked out well over 1,000 times a year. The paperback versions are worn out by the end of the year. The books are available at the Julia Hull community library for the summer so students can get a head start on their reading. Last year's bound books are kept in the library or the classroom teacher's libraries.
