N APRIL, Lions Health launched the 2017 Young Lions Health Award in partnership with UNICEF and La Caixa Banking Foundation. This week, the winning team was selected from a shortlist of 10. They are Giulia Marchi and Giovanni Santoni of Sudler & Hennessey in Italy. Their prize includes a vist to Cannes Lions. Now in its third year, the competition challenges young creative communications professionals to present a core idea, including a launch event/ activation, digital activation and video idea, designed to tackle a major global health problem. The challenge this year was to come up with an idea to launch on World Pneumonia Day (November 12). The aim is to increase public understanding and engagement from in the fight against pneumonia, drive advocacy in the public and private sectors, and build recognition of the La Caixa FoundationUNICEF partnership as a pioneering alliance to reduce this problem. Marchi and Santoni’s idea, ‘Not available in your country’, is that on World Pneumonia Day people will find that pieces of popular online content are blocked when. To access the content, consumers will need to watch an educational video on pneumonia or make a donation. “We found the Young Lions Health brief very moving,” Marchi said. “The idea that so many children are deprived of life-saving medicine just because of where they happen to be born really shocked us. This was the inspiration for our . We’re so happy that the jury selected it as the winner.” Santoni added: “We’re both looking forward to seeing all the incredible work from around the world, meeting new people and hearing from brilliant speakers. To be going to Cannes is exciting enough. Going as winners is a dream come true.” Commenting on the value of the TURN TO P.2

Lions Health grows as industry rises to the creative challenge TODAY, agencies and clients from around the world are gathering in Cannes for the fourth edition of Lions Health, the world’s leading healthcare communications awards event and conference. Held across two days, delegates will see the healthcare communications industry’s best creative work and listen to the sector’s leading experts, entrepreneurs and media influencers. For the two award categories, there were 2,245 entries in Health & Wellness, which cel-

ebrates creativity for personal wellbeing, up 11% on last year and a new record. Commenting on the category’s increased popularity, Mike Rogers, creative partner Serviceplan Health & Life and 2017 jury president, said: “What was once considered a restrictive backwater of advertising has flourished into a dynamic and inspiring form of creative communication that has the ability to touch the lives of people in a way no other area can.” The Pharma category, which

is more technical and tightlydefined, generated 590 entries this year. This is up 1% on last year — a healthy result given the strict criteria for entry. June Laffey, executive creative director McCann Health, Australia & SE Asia and jury president, welcomed the tight regulatory controls that define the category, arguing that they can result in strong creative work: “To think outside the box, you first must have a box to think within,” she said. “Within TURN TO P.2 pharmaceutical

communications, that box is very clearly defined. But rules and regulations are just a starting point, something to consider as part of the creative challenge.” “The steady growth seen in the Pharma and Health & Wellness Lions over the four years has been very exciting. Both have established their focus as the global benchmark of creativity in a highly specialised area, and it’s encouraging to see creativity in healthcare communications achieve a higher profile,” Lions Health festival director Louise Benson said. The Health & Wellness Grand Prix was won last year by ‘Project Literacy’, an FCB Inferno London campaign for Pearson. The Pharma Grand Prix went to Ogilvy & Mather London for its ‘Breathless Choir’ campaign on behalf of Philips. A total

of 10 Golds were awarded in Health & Wellness and a further seven Golds in Pharma. Alongside the awards, Lions Health will host a two-day conference programme, involving some of the world’s leading experts and influencers from within and beyond healthcare communications. With 50 content sessions across three stages — the Inspiration Stage, the Health in Focus Stage and the Health in Action Stage — the speaker line-up includes UnitedHealthcare CMO Andrew Mackenzie; regional market manager for Bangladesh, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, Asna Towfiq; Oxford University head of cross-modal research laboratory Charles Spence; Pfizer senior director reputation communications Dana Gandsman; McCann Health global chief creative officer Jeremy Perrott; scifi artist and body architect

Lucy McRae; former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino; and Grammy-nominated Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni. Returning events at Lions Health include the RB Innovation Hack, which will focus again on how to tackle air pollution; and the Med Tech Expo, sponsored by Omnicom Health Group, at which there will be specially curated installations showcasing advances in VR, AR, robotics, AI, social media for healthcare, voice-recognition technology and data-driven healthcare tech. One Lions Health innovation, adds Benson, is the ‘unconference’ area, “where people can interact if they want. What we’re looking for is a lively debate that anyone can take part in. On day one, we’ll have a discussion about how well the industry is set up for the future of healthcare communications.”

Giulia Marchi YOUNG LIONS WINNERS FOCUS ON INEQUALITY, CONTINUED...

Young Lions Health Award, Ariadna Bardolet, international programmes department director at La Caixa Banking Foundation, said the award is “a great example of the crossover between inventiveness and healthcare. Professionals in the creative healthcare communications industry have such a wealth of knowledge and it’s great to be able to provide young creatives with an opportunity to bring their ideas to a global audience with UNICEF.” Gérard Bocquenet, director, Private Fundraising and Partnerships, UNICEF added: “Creativity can save lives. That is why we need to harness young talent to win the battle against pneumonia — the cause of most children’s deaths from disease worldwide.

Giovanni Santoni

Together with our partner La Caixa, we are delighted to raise the profile of the issue on the global stage of Lions Health.” Other campaigns on the shortlist were: ‘Deliver the cure’ from BJL Group UK; ‘Give a breath’ from Sudler London, UK; ‘Laila, the coughing elephant’ from Sudler & Hennessey Italy; ‘Save the story’ from Havas Life Mediacom UK; ‘Seconds for life’ from Wunderman Cato Johnson Argentina; ‘They can be saved’ from Famous Innovations India; ‘Breathe life’ from ICC Health UK; ‘Breathe Beats’ from Sudler & Hennessey USA; and ‘Nameonia’ from Leo Burnett India. Marchi and Santoni will receive their award during the official ceremony tonight, attended by 1,000 experts from the healthcare communications industry.

Only life-changing creativity good enough for healthcare MIKE Rogers, creative partner at Serviceplan Health & Life, is upbeat about the progress that has been made in the health and wellness category in Cannes over the last few years. “What was once considered a restrictive and creative backwater of advertising has flourished into a dynamic and inspiring form of creative communication that has the ability to touch the lives of people in a way that no other area can. Healthcare is such a big business that it deserves great creativity.” Rogers is president of this year’s Health & Wellness jury. Well versed in the world of awards, Rogers was a jury member at the first Lions

Health in 2014, and Healthcare jury president at Eurobest 2015 in Antwerp. “I was honoured to be a part of the inaugural Health Lions jury in 2014 and now, presiding over the same category, I am extremely eager to see how far the wind of change has carried healthcare creativity,” he said. The Health & Wellness Lions celebrate creativity for personal wellbeing. Entries need to demonstrate an inspired approach to consumer healthcare — that is, exceptionally engaging work that publicly educates, promotes non-prescription products, allows selfdiagnosis or facilitates proactive personal care.

Laffey prescribes ‘head, heart and hand’ for Pharma success THE PHARMA Lions need to demonstrate ideas that inform and engage health practitioners, patients and targeted consumers. The work must bring science and innovation to life, and facilitate diagnosis, prescription, disease mitigation or illness management. And in the opinion of June Laffey, executive creative director of McCann Health, Australia and South East Asia, the definition of the category should not be diluted: “Pharma campaigns have been through a rigorous process, so it’s only right they are compared with each other — not with more gen-

eral campaigns that are only health in a broad sense. Being tough on the work will benefit our industry, both in its product and the talent it attracts.” Laffey is a key figure in healthcare communications, which makes her an ideal choice for president of this year’s Pharma jury. Since joining McCann Health Sydney in 2010, her company has been recognised as one of Asia-Pacific’s most creatively awarded healthcare agencies. Among Laffey’s many achievements is a Gold at Lions Health. In terms of her own approach to judging, she said: “I call

my approach ‘head, heart and hand’. Does a campaign make me think [head], does it raise an emotion [heart] and does it involve great

craft and ideas [hand]? A campaign that has all three is something that will really stand out from its rivals.” Laffey believes the right

great creativity.” He did not want to prejudge what kind of campaigns might win, but stressed the Grand Prix and Gold Lions winners would need a certain “wow factor”. He added: “The great thing about this sector is that we’re dealing with life-changing creativity and it’s important that our winners have that.” Arguably the biggest challenge, Rogers said, is finding work that strikes the right note with expert jury members from all over the world: “It’s difficult to find pieces of work that inspire everyone, from Germany to Brazil to Japan. But I think the most important thing we can all do is to listen to each other to make sure all perspectives are taken into account. The way we get to the right conclusion is by giving real attention to the way people fight for the campaigns they really believe in.”

results will be achieved by encouraging a collaborative approach among jurors. “I want everyone to have a voice,” she added. “This process is not about me or the loudest voice in the room. I remember from the 2015 jury how people’s opinions would change as someone else explained the meaning of a particular piece. Discussion really helps showcase the work.” Laffey is convinced that having a dedicated Lions Health event has been the right move for the industry. But she is also hoping it can act as a creative beacon for other sectors: “I want to see delegates from Cannes Lions come to us because of the calibre of speakers at Lions Health. I want our content to be amazing and inspirational for all.”

Developing world may have the key to better healthcare AT A LIONS Health session today (16.00, Inspiration Stage), legendary agency strategist and chairman of TBWA\ Worldwide, Jean-Marie Dru, will explore new approaches and possibilities for creating change in the healthcare industry. Speaking during a TBWA\ WorldHealth-hosted session entitled Disruptive Innovation In Healthcare, Dru will discuss the urgent need for drastic and disruptive transformations to reverse stagnation in the healthcare industry which, despite its status as the single largest industry in the world, is also the most inefficient. “Healthcare is three times big-

ger than the banking sector, yet it’s not undertaking the deep transformation it needs’,” Dru told the Lions Daily News. “There have been huge advances made by medical sciences, but the ways and means that are used to deliver medical treatment are often costly, inefficient, ineffective, and are not consumerfriendly. We are also plagued by the fact our ‘healthcare system’ is, in practice, a ‘sick-care’ system, particularly in the Western world. Until we can better evolve to proactively keeping a patient well rather than reacting when a patient becomes ill, we are at stagnation.” Against this backdrop, Dru said there is a compelling need for

what he calls “disruptive innovation, meaning radical transformation and changes versus step-by-step improvements. Gene therapy, 3D printing, nanotechnologies and nanomedicine, and on-demand connected care, are the most disruptive technologies hitting the sector. The problem is that they aren’t emerging at a sufficient pace.” With healthcare ripe for new practices, new processes, and new means for delivering services to patients, Dru predicts that the necessary innovations could perhaps come from the places we least expect. “Healthcare systems are not efficient. In some countries,

they could even collapse. There is an urgent need for disruptive innovations, and many of these will come from developing countries that bet-

ter understand how to implement leapfrog technologies and processes to create real change. The South will inspire the North.”

Health platform aims ‘to make moment of care momentous’ TODAY on the Health in Focus stage, Outcome Health co-founder Shradha Agarwal discusses how the rapid deployment of her company’s health intelligence platform is set to transform creativity in the healthcare communications business. “Outcome Health works with healthcare providers,” Agarwal said, “providing them with actionable health intelligence right at the moment of care. The result is a more personalised, patient-centric dialogue which leads to improved health outcomes and provides the conditions for healthcare communications to be more creative.” In its current iteration, Outcome’s platform includes a 32-inch custom-manufactured tablet for physicians with 3D anatomical models and other clinical reference materials. The 3D models can be anno-

tated during patient consultations to visualise the patient’s medical condition, related symptoms and treatment options. There is also a patient tablet with video-based education on lifestyle changes and

engagement tools such as interactive health assessments for early diagnosis. “The platform is all about making that moment of care momentous,” says Argawal. “But it’s also possible for patients to take

away information, for example videos that will help them make considered decisions about the best methods of treatment for them.” The Creative Future of Healthcare (today, 16.30) is hosted

‘Taking ownership of innovation’

IN A LIONS Health session entitled Designing for Good: Transforming Life for Africa’s Most Forgotten Island (Sunday, 11:00), design and innovation consultancy Fjord will tell delegates about two inspirational projects it has been working on in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in partnership with the NGO Ensemble Pour La Difference. “The first involved introducing a digital patient-management system to a hospital in Kavumu,” said Fjord principal director Daniel Harris, who will lead the session. “The second was about bringing the internet to a remote island called Idjwi, so that they could receive weather updates before embarking on dangerous voyages across Lake Kivu, and could also gain insights to help them sell their produce

on the mainland.” While the work has had tremendous value in its own right, Harris said “one of the reasons we are bringing the story to Lions Health is that we learned a huge amount about how design and creativity can be introduced into Western organisations. Some organisations find it hard to change and don’t always have clarity about their purpose in the world. But what we found in the DRC was an incredible appetite for what the future might look like… as well as the importance of collaboration, getting stuck in and taking ownership of innovation.” These are lessons Harris believes have become priorities for Western businesses: “What you do and how you connect with customers should always be in question.

by healthcare branding agency InterbrandHealth, which helped Outcome Health rebrand and reposition itself at the start of 2017. “One reason we are so invested in Outcome Health is because it will enable pharma communications companies like ours to get a clearer understanding of whether our creative work is having its intended impact,” InterbrandHealth executive director of creative and Pharma juror, R John Fidelino, said. “It allows us to measure our creative work and maximise its efficacy. We’re no longer just looking at brand-awareness building, but using the power of technology and creativity to deliver a better quality of life.” Outcome Hea lt h is on course to expand its footprint from 20% to 70% of all US physician practices by 2020. But the company is also going global, Argawal said: “The challenges in US healthcare are prevalent in other countries, so we definitely see this as a global opportunity.”

But there’s also plenty of research to suggest that a lot of leading companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index won’t survive the next 10 years. So we think there is a strong argument that learning from different environments can be beneficial in encouraging agility. By doing something that places organisations outside their comfort zone, it forces them to refresh the way they put their existing assets to work. In our case, we were forced to think about what we had to offer and realised it was our methodology.” The DRC project, named First Light, is funded by the Fjord Innovation Fund which supports ideas applying cuttingedge design to social causes. TOMMY HILFIGER SHARES ITS DISRUPTIVE IDEAS

T

OMMY Hilfiger’s chief brand officer Avery Baker will demonstrate at this year’s Lions Innovation how gargantuan corporations, normally accused of being plodding dinosaurs in the digital age, can be as nimble and swift as innovative startups. During her presentation called Unlocking Real-Time Creativity. From Enterprise Speed To Speed Of Culture In Six Months, Avery will share her experience in overhauling the corporate culture at the legendary fashion-andbeauty multinational last year. It might be her first time at Cannes Lions, she said, but major international brands can learn from #TOMMYNOW, the group’s high-profile “see now, buy now” initiative to make its desirable clothes and accessories more accessible. Fans no longer have to wait for new lines of the Tommy Hilfiger collection to be on display in stores six months after catwalk models have sashayed down the runways. To ensure the company did not lose the drive to catch up with what the social media-savvy consumer wants, Baker and her team revamped its long-established brand-and-retail culture last year in a record-breaking six months. “We announced our plans for #TOMMYNOW in February 2016 and it went live in just about six months later in September,” she said. “We want to share the lessons that we learned along the way: from team-building and leadership to the creativity and marketing perspectives. “We’re so aware that consumers

and their behaviours are changing quickly,” Baker added. “There is an increasing disconnect between consumer behaviour and the demand for instant gratification, on the one hand, and the fashion industry’s traditional timeline on the other.” In a bid to eliminate that potential detachment from consumers, the company made moves to ditch the aloofness associated with haute couture and adopt the more user-friendly approach expected by today’s more demanding customers, Avery said. Major brands can no longer assume consumers will embrace their goods and services simply because they are creative about their marketing messages. She pointed out that Tommy Hilfiger has always stood out in the fashion sector because of its association with the worlds of entertainment, innovation and technology. The company, which has a reputation for disrupting industry habits, broke the mould in the highly competitive catwalk sector when it debuted its first marketing campaign with large billboard ads in New York’s Times Square in 1985. Since then, it has made an effort to create a continuous link between its aspirational brand and the average consumer by collaborating with the music industry. Hilfiger has had music superstars Pharrell Williams and Lenny Kravitz perform at its runway shows. It has sponsored gigs by The Who’s Pete Townshend and Britney Spears, and dressed The Rolling Stones on tour. “We crossover into those spaces because Tommy Hilfiger

as a brand is about democratising the fashion runway for the many,” Avery said. In the 21st century, however, democratisation means brands need to catch up with what consumers want, not the other way around. “There is rapid acceleration in our desire to be a brand that pioneers and one that democratises what has traditionally been closed to normal people. And for us, we felt the right time was now,” she added. “Sometimes, when you have a right idea, you can’t wait. Acting on that idea and going after it with courage is sometimes much better than waiting for what might seem to be a more appropriate moment.”

The #TOMMYNOW project is now implemented twice a year and functions as a kind of innovation lab for the company. “Our goal is to keep up with our consumers and to engage with them in a way that is relevant via the use of new technology, the speed at which we offer products, and how we deliver them.” However, she insisted, being innovative and disruptive does not mean losing sight of the fundamental prize. “Everything we do always starts with the brand. It is the ultimate convergence between art and science. That is what we represent and it never changes. It is how we communicate that and deliver what consumers want which is more adaptable.”

AN INJECTION OF INNOVATION Lions Health is just four years old but it has quickly established itself as a must-attend event for healthcare communications professionals. Andy Fry looks at how this year’s festival intends to challenge norms, inspire innovative and motivate life-changing creativity

O

VER the course of two

jam-packed days, Lions Health plays host to the world’s most prestigious healthcare communications awards and a conference programme featuring scores of inspirational speakers. From chief creative officers to digital medicine leaders, industry experts examine the intersection of health, creativity and technology, and inject the industry with fresh thinking. Proof that Lions Health is in rude health is the fact that attendance has grown every year since birth, says Lions Health festival director Louise Benson. Although the official figures were not available at press time, around 1,000 delegates from every corner of the world are in Cannes. Especially encouraging, Benson says, is the growing number of clients and brands in attendance. This year’s event has not seen the kind of major surgery experienced in 2016, when Lions Health was both revamped and rescheduled to overlap with the Cannes Lions International Festival Of Creativity. For Benson, this is a sign that the event is reaching a new stage of maturity. “Last year’s changes were a recognition that the two communities at Lions Health and Cannes Lions had a lot to offer each other creatively and should be able to interact,” she says. “This year, the only real change we’ve made is to offer a tailored four-day pass for people who want to attend Lions Health and Lions Innovation, but don’t have the time to stay for the duration of the Lions Festival.” One of the positive outcomes of last year’s revamp was that Lions Health was allocated a dedicated zone within the Palais des Festivals — close enough to Cannes Lions to allow two-way traffic, but far enough away to signal its independence. This venue, Benson says, has been designed to meet the needs of

D1 - Lions-12 Health+D+BAF.indd 7

Lions Health, rather than fit within the existing Cannes Lions structure. In terms of the conference programme, there are nearly 50 content sessions shared out across three stages: the Inspiration Stage, the Health In Focus Stage and the Health In Action Stage. This structure, says Benson, provides flexibility to schedule a broad range of content, from keynotes through workshops to demonstrations. “One innovation we are excited by this year is the addition of an ‘unconference’ area,” she adds. “This is where people can interact in the proceedings if they want. What we’re looking for here is a vibrant, lively debate that anyone can take part in. For example, we’ll have a discussion about how well the industry is set up for the future of healthcare communications.” The quality of session ideas submitted by brands, agencies and other organisations looks as dynamic and progressive as ever this year. Benson says there is an emphasis on subjects such as patient-centricity, the use of data to deliver insights, developments in genome research and — of course — creativity. Today, for example, the McCann Health session Fighting For Your Creative Life deals with one of the creativity issues that is an ongoing concern for the healthcare communications industry — which is how it can express itself within the constraints that are generally imposed by regulators. Also on today’s agenda, Matthieu Lorrain, creative innovation lead at The Zoo, Google’s creative think tank for brands and agencies, will discuss Exploring Creativity Through Experimentation. There’s also a Mindscapes session that looks at the DNA of creativity.

The advent of new technology and how it can be harnessed is another key theme across the two days of Lions Health. On the Health In Action Stage today, Professor Shafi Ahmed of Royal London and St Bartholomew’s and co-founder of Medical Realities, will discuss the pioneering surgical work he has done using technologies such as Google Glass, Snapchat Spectacles and virtual reality (VR). VR also features in Changing Healthcare With Virtual Reality, a GMR Marketing session on the same stage later today. Tomorrow, Lions Health delegates can also drop in on a session hosted by IBM Watson that will investigate the role of weather data and the internet of things (IoT) in preventing asthma. A similar tech-disruptor mentality underpins tomorrow’s Biopharma’s Latest Blend: When Babylon Health Met AstraZeneca. Hosted by MM&M, Babylon Health and AstraZeneca, the session explores the benefits of pairing products with unexpected partners. Explaining more, John McCarthy, AstraZeneca’s vice-president of global digital, says: “AstraZeneca and Babylon Health are collaborating to offer telehealth and artificial intelligencebased triage to UK patients with COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease]. We will discuss how the collaboration came about and how

companies like AstraZeneca are partnering to meet customer expectations around digital services that can complement our medicines.” McCarthy says digital is front-of-mind for companies like AstraZeneca these days: “The access we all have to new measures of health that are either strapped to our wrists or carried in our pockets is creating a new kind of customer experience. Therefore, patients and healthcare providers have expectations that we at AstraZeneca have been working hard to understand, so we can differentiate ourselves not just with great science and life-changing medicines, but also with the services we provide.” In terms of the value of Lions Health, McCarthy adds: “Lions Health embodies the spirit of creativity that I see every day in my team at AstraZeneca. The people here demonstrate a desire to move closer to understanding what patients need and expect of the companies that make their medicines.” As for the themes that he would like delegates and speakers to address, he says: “How other companies are collecting, analysing and leveraging customer data to improve their digital content and services, as well as to demonstrate the value of the health interventions that they market.” Belle Frank, chief strategy officer, health, at Young & Rubicam, has been attending Lions Health since the start. She is also a fan: “It’s great to have a dedicated event that encourages the sector to raise the bar on creativity. There are tougher restrictions on agencies working in the healthcare sector, but I think they’re rising to the challenge. It takes true creativity to have an impact inside a

restrictive scenario.” This year, Frank will take the stage alongside Robert Zirkelbach, executive vice-president of public affairs for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), in a session today entitled Welcome To The Age Of Age. “We’re living through an incredibly important cultural and economic trend, which is that baby boomers [55-plus-year-olds) are not retiring or becoming inactive,” Frank says. “People are living so long now that we’ve reached a point where a third of the US workforce are baby boomers. So this session will explore what it means to be old and why the healthcare communications industry needs to rethink its approach.” According to Frank, brands and agencies are still not paying enough attention to this demographic shift, “despite clear evidence of baby boomers’ spending power and the fact that younger audiences look up to them. They respect their parents’ experience and have heroes in the older age groups.” At the same time, she contends, the industry needs to get to grips with the fact that millennial attitudes to their own aging process are evolving: “They’re rejecting

the anti-aging message that has been central to marketing communications in recent decades. They’re focused more on embracing who they are.” Lions Health wouldn’t be Lions Health without a few provocative sessions to inspire debate. One that certainly fits this bill is tomorrow afternoon’s Anomaly’s session Cannabis: 5,000 Years Of Creative Destruction In The Making. During the session, Anomaly founding partner and joint global CEO, Jason DeLand, will explore humanity’s historic relationship with cannabis, stripping away the stereotypes that surround it and stating the case for its use as a way of combatting pain, anxiety, insomnia and more. “I want to bring cannabis out of the shadows and explore the evidence that it can improve overall quality of life,” he says. “Among other things, it has proven benefits for children with Dravet syndrome, veterans suffering from PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder] and business executives suffering from insomnia brought on by jet lag.” DeLand’s session is interesting for a couple of reasons that go beyond its subject matter. The first is that Anomaly, whose primary role is as a marketing and communications agency, actually has a business interest in the sector, having invested in hmbldt, a start-up company that sells cannabis-based products for medicinal use. According to DeLand, this benefits the agency because “it makes us more commercially aware. When you’re in

business, you’re fighting for survival, which means there is no time for naval-gazing or indulgent creative work.” Also of note is that Anomaly is not a healthcare specialist, or a healthcare division within a larger agency. It is precisely the kind of high-profile creative company that the Lions Health organisers want as part of the mix. “I’m really excited to be taking part,” DeLand adds. “Because healthcare is forced to play by a different set of rules, I think it can be a source of great ideas and innovation for the broader creative sector.” In addition to the conference sessions, Benson says this year’s event will see the return of the RB and Lions Health Innovation Hack, which launched last year. The idea behind the Hack is to bring together RB’s R&D and marketing teams with external, entrepreneurial minds to develop innovations that might work their way into the market as healthcare products or solutions. In year one, the Hack saw Lions Health, RB and Save The Children join forces to find solutions for the impact of air pollution on children, especially in markets like India. Out of this brainstorming came several ideas, including an anti-pollution paint, an air-purifying baby pacifier and a lung-strengthening musical instrument. This year, the Hack focuses on the same subject but shift attention to China, says Roberto Funari, RB’s executive vicepresident, category development organisation. “China has some of the highest levels of air pollution in the world,” he says. “Although considerable improvements have been made in air quality in recent years and people wearing masks in places such as China are a familiar sight, there is still a need to develop consumer-driven products that encourage behavioural change and empower people to protect their health.” Explaining the appeal of the Hack to RB, Funari adds: “For me, the Innovation Hack brings to life our purpose-led approach to innovation. It enables us to combine multiple creative minds and give them a dedicated, purposeful focus, which can be hugely inspiring and encourage great results. The teams have an opportunity to influence and pioneer future innovations that have the potential to protect children’s health, thus giving them the best possible start in life, which is hugely important.” Crucial to an initiative like this is

D1 - Lions-12 Health+D+BAF.indd 9

keeping up the momentum post-event. Funari says last year’s Hack was “a huge discussion point globally across RB. Our R&D team is now researching the musical-lung strengthener further, exploring the possibility of developing and bringing it to market to improve lung health.” The initiative also caught the attention of the media, he adds: “From a PR perspective, there were 23 pieces of global coverage reaching more 11 million people — a fantastic result.” Following this year’s Innovation Hack, Funari says RB will be launching a global media campaign to announce the innovations proposed and “showcase what can be achieved in just 28 hours when experts from R&D, marketing and creative communications join forces to tackle a global health challenge”. He adds: “I’m hoping this will encourage more people and organisations from around the world to collaborate and take action. If the 2017 Innovation Hack is as successful as last year, we may bring it back for a third year with a new challenge.” Adding his voice to other attendees, Funari says Lions Health is a natural fit for RB: “I truly believe creativity drives our RB purpose, which focuses on providing innovative solutions that enable consumers to have healthier lives and happier homes. We’re always looking to connect and partner with like-minded individuals and organisations who share this vision. Lions Health is dedicated to lifechanging creativity and innovation in the healthcare industry, so it’s the perfect platform not just to showcase creative thinking, but also to bring together some of the world’s great creative minds to solve big health issues.” Also returning for a second time is the Lions Health MedTech Expo, sponsored by Omnicom Health Group. “As the healthcare landscape adapts to the introduction of new and cutting-edge technologies, there is an inevitable effect on healthcare communications,” Benson says. “The MedTech Expo is the perfect place to find out what the future might hold.” The MedTech Expo features specially curated installations showcasing some of the next-generation technologies that

are set to transform healthcare around the world. Examples include VR and augmented reality (AR), robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), social media for healthcare, voice-recognition technology and data-driven healthcare solutions. Among the companies signed up to participate at press time are Google, GMR, Control Bionics and IBM Watson. Alongside the exhibition, which is open from 10.00 to 18.00, some companies will host lightning 10-minute sessions in which they will talk about their innovations in healthcare. Currently, three are confirmed for each day. Replicating tried-and-tested formulae from the main Cannes Lions event are the Health Marketers Accelerator Programme, which helps client-side marketers make the most of their Lions Health experience with guidance and special events; and the Young Lions Health Award, which is organised in association with UNICEF and La Caixa Foundation. Last year, Young Lions participants were challenged to create a digital activation, print ad and video to raise awareness among caregivers about the importance of early-childhood development. This year, the brief begins with a striking claim: “Pneumonia is the single leading cause of infectious death among children globally, accounting for up to 16% of under-five mortality — yet no child needs to die from pneumonia”. The challenge for competitors is to come up with a big creative idea that will launch on World Pneumonia Day (November 12). The aim will be to increase understanding and engagement from the public in the fight against pneumonia, drive advocacy within the public and private sectors, and build recognition of the La Caixa Foundation-UNICEF partnership as a pioneering alliance to reduce child mortality from pneumonia. Of course, another crucial part of Lions Health is the Awards programme itself, with two key categories up for grabs — Health & Wellness and Pharma — as well the Lions Health Grand Prix for Good. Like last year, the awards ceremony will take place at the end of today, enabling delegates to review the winning campaigns tomorrow. In addition, representatives from the two juries will host sessions during which they will reveal the reasons why particular campaigns won. There will also be digital and physical exhibitions of the work, creating numerous opportunities for delegates to learn.

BUILDING TRUST IN HEALTHCARE It’s never been easy for pharmaceutical companies and healthcare brands to engage with patients or doctors. But a mix of new technology and old techniques is helping to build trust and improve the relationship, writes Jaimy Lee, executive editor of MM&M

S

LOWLY but surely,

pharmaceutical companies and healthcare brands are starting to use new tools such as virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) alongside proven strategies like humour and storytelling to improve a customer experience long considered reactive and inauthentic. Gilead Sciences, a seriously researchminded drug maker, has been making jokes about sex on Tumblr to raise awareness of its HIV prevention pill. Merck and Takeda are testing the technological waters, trying out Amazon’s Alexa and other forms of machine learning. And UnitedHealthcare identified the most boring topic in healthcare — the ICD codes used by doctors to bill insurance companies — and made a campaign using them that is sweet, simple and funny. Then there’s AstraZeneca, which is working with Babylon Health, a startup AI platform, and the UK’s National Health Service to help people cope with COPD — a notoriously hard disease to

D1-Lions-5 MM&M+d+z+BAF.indd 10

manage — while also lowering healthcare costs. “Our industry has depended more on the innovation and the science labs to be the driver of our business,” John McCarthy, AstraZeneca’s vice-president of global commercial excellence, said during a video interview with MM&M. “But if we take that approach and really think about it from the scientist’s perspective, how do we do our research? How do we [on the commercial side] design the right service for patients and take that same kind of approach to solving the problems of a patient that our scientists have taken?” This move toward authenticity is years in the making for the healthcare industry, which is bound by regulatory constraints and an internal corporate culture reluctant to try new things. But in recent years, some companies and brands have started to experiment with how they communicate with patients and healthcare professionals, whether through simpler language, humour and emotional storytelling or new technology platforms.

UnitedHealthcare made ICD codes sweet, simple and funny

It’s not unheard of for medical brands to form a persona. Since the early days of medical advertising, there have been numerous examples. Nevertheless, for many years, drug ads in the US have, for the most part, simply informed viewers about a drug, what condition or disease it treats, and then instructed them to talk to their doctors. Now, the approach to pharma marketing is becoming much more conversational — and much more likely to look and feel like an ad for a consumer brand. For example, Philips Healthcare, last year’s Pharma Grand Prix winner, told a heart-warming story about patients with respiratory conditions — a film that relied heavily on the empathy of the viewer and less on the clinical benefits of the product in a manner that healthcare manufacturers have rarely done before. “The power of emotional storytelling is actually becoming something really strong,” says Chris Palmer, president of CDM New York. “There is more interest and more value from that.” What is successful now are “campaigns that link to emotional truths about the human condition”, adds Matt Connor, executive creative director at Wunderman Health. “Brands struggle with it. They are accustomed to talking about the benefits. They are uncomfortable moving above the brand.” But not all brands. Wunderman this year worked with GlaxoSmithKline’s Theraflu, an over-the-counter coldand-flu treatment, to develop a series of mini-documentaries about people who “power through” the flu in order to continue doing work that helps other people, such as providing food to homeless communities in Los

MATT CONNOR “THAT’S THE CHALLENGE — TO FIND A STORYLINE AND ELEMENTS THAT TRULY SUPPORT THE BRAND AND THE BRAND PURPOSE RATHER THAN FORCING SOMETHING TOGETHER THAT’S NOT ORGANIC”

Angeles. “That’s the challenge,” Connor adds, “to find a storyline and elements that truly support the brand and the brand purpose rather than forcing something together that’s not organic.” Consumer packaged-goods (CPG) brands like Dove and tech firms like Apple and Amazon have been “far more advanced in how they’ve approached things like creativity”, says Shwen Gwee, Biogen’s head of digital strategy and global clinical operations. Now, some drugmakers and other traditional players are following suit. “The whole real push is toward... the experience,” he adds. Robin Shapiro, group president for North America at TBWA\WorldHealth, says this is one reason why healthcare brands are incorporating rather unexpected details into their advertising programmes — using music, for example, or immediate responses to cultural moments taking

11

FOCUS ON HEALTHCARE

place on social media. When people with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease post photos online of themselves with their colostomy bags, this creates opportunities for the companies that make therapies to treat these diseases to respond and join the online conversations. For a consumer brand, this may seem like Advertising 101. For pharma, it’s a risk. Pharma clients are not used to “moving at the speed of culture”, Shapiro says. But that level of discomfort is offset by “a great need and desire for authenticity”, she adds. In both the US and abroad, how drugs are priced has become a major political and public-health issue, and pharma companies have been criticised for their slow or tone-deaf responses to this issue — a strategy that has further damaged trust between healthcare brands and their customers. In the US, the overall cost of treatment, whether that’s a hospital stay or cancer therapy, is now a national debate. Lowering the price of drugs was one of the few issues agreed upon by all candidates in the 2016 Presidential election. The question of whether to

ban certain uses of direct-to-consumer drug ads was another topic broached by Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. On a global level, governments in the UK, Japan and Colombia in the last year have increasingly cracked down on high-priced drugs, notably for products such as Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Opdivo — an immuno-oncology therapy lauded for its innovative approach to killing tumours but at a very high price — and Novartis’ cancer drug Gleevec. The debate about pricing has likely contributed to the ongoing reputation issues for the pharma industry, which has traditionally focused on sales — selling a product, selling a brand, selling a company. Campaigns that directly connect with patients or physicians on an emotional level may help the industry go beyond the task of selling to create the kind of trust often found between consumers and CPG, automaker and technology brands. “In an age, though, where trust and value are the real currency, trust is earned, not sold,” Gwee says. “There’s a move in healthcare to earn that trust, create that value and make that experience.”
