Emaar Properties’, revenue from apartments sales more than tripled in the third quarter, helping Dubai’s largest developer overcome a sharp decline in the sale of commercial units.

Revenue from sales of condominiums in the third-quarter more than tripled to 567 million dirhams ($154.4 million) from 183 million dirhams in the same period in 2011, a detailed earnings statement released on Sunday showed. However, revenue from sale of villas dropped slightly to 123 million dirhams from 126 million dirhams a year-ago.

Income from sale of commercial properties and plot sales took a major hit, generating only 109 million dirhams compared with 798.4 million dirhams in the prior-year period.

Emaar is one of the better performers

among property companies in Dubai as the sector recovers from a roughly 60 percent drop in real estate prices from their peak in 2008.

The builder of the world’s tallest tower, reported a 4.7 percent drop in third-quarter revenue in October, missing analyst’s forecasts.

Emaar launched three new real estate projects this year, with residential units generating strong interest.

The report also showed that Emaar is owed 242 million dirhams by troubled mortgage affiliate Amlak, down from 595 million dirhams in 2011.

This amount earns an average interest of 1.45 percent per annum compared with 3.13 percent to 4 percent last year, Emaar said.

1 pound dry garbanzo beans 1 onion, quartered 1 potato, peeled and quartered 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup cilantro leaves, chopped 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 cups canola oil

Preparation : 1. Rinse the garbanzo beans under cold water and discard any bad ones. Place in a large pot, and cover with water. Let soak 24 hours, and rinse again.

2. Place the garbanzo beans, onion, and potato in the bowl of a food processor. Cover, and process until finely chopped. Leaving about 1 cup of the garbanzo bean mixture in the food processor bowl, pour the rest into a mixing bowl. Add the garlic, cilantro, coriander, cumin, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper to the garbanzo bean mixture in the food processor bowl; process on low to blend thoroughly. Return the reserved garbanzo bean mixture to the food processor bowl, and add the lemon juice, olive oil, and flour; process on low into a coarse meal. Cover, and refrigerate 2 hours.

3. Stir the baking soda into the garbanzo bean mixture until evenly blended. Using damp hands, form the mixture into 1 1/2 inch diameter balls.

4. Pour the canola oil into a wok 1 to 2 inches deep, and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the falafel balls, turning so all sides are evenly browned, about 5 minutes. Remove falafel from oil, and drain on paper towels. Repeat to cook remaining falafel balls.

“This is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert made of semolina flour, yogurt, and coconut.

To adjust the sweetness, you can half or double the amount of sugar in the lemon syrup.”

2 cups semolina flour 1/3 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup white sugar 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut 1/4 cup butter, melted 1 cup plain yogurt 1/4 cup milk, or as needed 1/4 cup whole almonds 1 cup water 1 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8 inch square baking dish.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the semolina flour, baking powder, 1 cup sugar, coconut and butter. Add the yogurt and milk; mix until moistened but not runny or liquid. If you see that it is too dry, add more milk. Spread into a greased 8 inch square baking dish, smoothing the top as much as possible.

Decorate the top with whole almonds.

3. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown.

While the basboosa is baking, combine the water, 1 cup of sugar and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, and cook for at least 5 minutes.

4. When the basboosa has finished baking, pour the syrup over it as evenly as possible. Place it back in the oven for about 5 minutes, or until the syrup has been fully absorbed. Let rest for about 20 minutes before cutting into pieces and serving.

Understanding Evangelical’s Prophesy of War and the “End Times” (extract) Finding Hope in the Era of the Neo-Crusades. Is America’s warring in the Middle East politically or religiously motivated?

ANSWER: War is a political expedient, and the “Christian Right” is its enabler, not the reverse. War is the politician’s return ticket to office, the only sure answer to full employment. In the 11th Century the landed gentry and their politicians looked to the Catholic Church for its enablement of the 11 Crusades ending with the shameful Children’s Crusade two centuries later. What has caused those who say they follow Christ to become the enablers of serial wars, and where is the hope? A young Southern Baptist family friend, a pro-life activist named Mike, distributed Edgar Whisenant’s epistle (88 Reason Why Jesus is Coming Back in 1988) in his and my large men’s church breakfast in the early months of 1988.

Mike absolutely believed the book, and considered the rapture not only imminent, but was scheduled by God for October 14 of that very year. Regretfully, this writer did nothing at the time to dissuade Mike, even though the book he gave me appeared to be full of holes.At first glance it might appear that 88 REASONS could only harm those who believed the stretched myths found in its pages. Mike was married and had a young family, yet he made a mission project of giving the books to all who would carry one out the door of the church, as I did. I am sure 88 Reasons made a difference in Mike’s life, and it could hardly have been positive, for he was truly convinced the world would end only months away.

Mike gave up causes he believed were saving lives. He was an activist in the pro-life movement, and the volunteer leader of an important group. But as the spring came, he phased out of this commitment to spend more time with his young family in the months remaining

on earth. Mike believed in preserving life, but no one showed him or warned him he was playing into the hands of two political regimes that had little respect for human life.

As you have guessed by now, “the Rapture” did not happen in 1988. But the first war on Iraq was already in the political hopper, and the first blood of the Iraqi innocent would be poured out on us two years later. Edgar Whisenant’s book of trash prophesies contributed to the slaughter. Its pages are filled with hints and innuendos of racism and bigotry in the name of Christianity.88 Reasons to make war in the Mideast Most of the 88 Reasons given for the imminent rapture had to do with the State of Israel, directly or indirectly. In fact, Edgar tells us the dating of the “great event” was based on the 40th Anniversary of the creation of the new Zionist state of Israel in 1948. Edgar was most creative in inventing exactly 88 reasons, but almost all of them involved his belief in world Zionism incorporated as a part of his “Christianity.” Here are just a few of the 88 Reasons Whisenant suggested that God needed a Rapture to realize the destiny of the Zionist State:REASON #7 (in part) “this is the last generation, [M1] started on 14 May 1948, the day Israel became a nation. Israel is the time clock of God throughout history, Israel is the blooming fig tree, (Jer 24:4-8) and the last generation will end 40 wicked Gentile years later on 14 May 1988.”REASON # 66: “Israel is the key to this whole scenario. You read again to see how time begins and ends and moves with the nation of Israel. “The activism for me long antedates the professional work,” Chomsky says. “I grew up that way. So I was a political activist as a teenager in the 1940s before I ever heard of linguistics.”

Discussing US politics, he attributes the growing popularity of the Tea Party movement, and the fanatical opposition to President Barack Obama in some quarters, to what he calls “pathological paranoia”.

“It’s something that exists in the country. It’s a very frightened country, always has been,” he says.

At the same time, Chomsky sees Obama himself as a man without a “moral centre”.

“If you look at his policies I think that’s what they reveal. I mean there’s some nice rhetoric here and there but when you look at the actual

Some schools today even make basic fact memorization a fun exercise, so much so they call the teachers Math coaches. Students shout out facts the way they would a cheer at a ball game. No wonder these schools are particularly successful at teaching math.

Among all the math curricula in the world, one has been standing out for the past 15 years, and that is the Singaporean national curriculum for Math. One of the main reasons for its success is the simple fact that

mental math is taught very early, from Kindergarten and First Grade onwards. The same reason is also the reason why it is difficult to implement in the US: Most lower elementary math teachers are not able to do mental math. But that’s not what I’m trying to focus on today. The mental math that the Singaporean curriculum promotes is based on the breaking down of 10 and 5, what they call “number bonds”. For example, 10 is 9 and 1, 8 and 2, 7 and 3, 6 and 4, and 5 and 5. This, in turn, is the basis for the ancient Chinese mechanical calculator called the abacus.

The abacus is a very simple little contraption where one vertical row stands for a place value. The lower beads are single units, while the upper bead stands for 5 units. Up to 50 years ago, most shopkeepers in East Asia still used the abacus to tally customers’ total amount due. As recently as 20 years ago, abacus was still a part of the Math curriculum in East Asia. I believe that is the main reason why East Asians are known to be excellent in Math. Kahane, a man who was among the most violent killers in Israeli history. And Whisenant justifies Kahane: REASON #8 “Rabbi Meir Kahane, who wants to throw out all of the Arabs in Israel, is acutely aware of the 40-year grace period given by God, beginning in 1948.”

Edgar Whisenant goes on quoting Rabbi Kahane page after page, supporting his militancy against Arabs with words of respect. To him Kahane was an oracle for God carrying out His will against the Philistine tribe. Meir Kahane was in fact an angry terrorist who deliberately incited documented brutality against the Palestinian people. Few Israelis openly advocated the Kahane program for deportation or liquidation of 3.5 million Arab people. He was an embarrassment to the Jews in Israel, who claimed that they themselves were victims of a similar liquidation a generation before. Kahane was founder of the Kach Party, which was committed to violence and repeated assassinations of Arab villagers, encouraging them to leave. Kahane’s public statements had much to do with agitating the Arabs toward the first Intifada in 1987. Whisenant used Kahane as a scripturally justified weather vane for war. Most of Whisenant’s “88 Reasons” were either tied to present happenings in Israel or based on Hebrew Old Testament prophesy. All 88 pointed unequivocally to war (“Armageddon”) being “God’s will.” Anyone who took the book seriously could not help but be conditioned to accept bloodshed in the Middle East.

Most of my friends accepted the little book from Mike, who wanted no money for it. After all, what good would money be after October 14th? Most of us probably did not take it seriously, and I would be surprised if many copies, save my own, survived these 18 years. I was later surprised to learn that the 88 Reasons had a national following, especially in the heartland. Edgar prospered, and is said to have sold a million copies at $2.00 each.

But I was wrong about the little book doing no damage. Mike’s distribution of the

American churchgoers are conditioned to the idea that war in the Mideast is inevitable and planned by God, and that nothing can be done to stop it. Nor should “Christians” try to prevent it. There is a cost. The blood is already pouring out on the hands of those who contrived the Neo-Crusade. Rivers of scarlet are trickling down all of our arms, staining each one of us. We, who call ourselves by Christ’s name and did nothing to stop it, are guilty of the shedding of innocent blood. Sad to say, we are in a conflict between the justice and humanity Christ taught, and the pagan superstition and bloodletting of a self-serving few who thrive on war. They have found their support in the Judaized, dispensational institutions. Resistance to this is not an option to those who follow Christ.

Where is the hope? There are “Mikes” in every church in America. You will find them leading, teaching, volunteering, passing the plate and paying tithes. They are doing their best, working, as they know God commands them to work, but not doubting the leadership’s acceptance of war.

When they correctly place the blame on their churches for the blood that is on their hands, Judaized Christianity will be finished; it cannot survive in an environment of truth. Christ’s words tell us He is still waiting for men like Mike to follow Him out of the corrupted church.

On Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank, Chomsky says “there was no effort” by Obama to even try and curb it. “[Obama’s] telling Netanyahu and the other Israeli leaders: I’ll tap you on the wrist but go ahead and do what you like .... So in fact, Obama is actually the first president who hasn’t really imposed restrictions on Israel.”

Chomsky also criticises neoliberal programmes which, he says, have played a large part in the ongoing global financial crisis and are “pretty harmful” almost everywhere they have been implemented. “[In] the 1950s and the 1960s, which was the

biggest growth period in American history, financial institutions were regulated. The New Deal regulations were in place and there were no financial crisis, none .... Starting in the 1970s it changed pretty radically. There were decisions made - not laws of nature - to reconstruct the economy.”

And decades later, these decisions have resulted in a situation which “really is a catastrophe,” he says.

But Chomsky also feels that “nothing’s ever gone too far. Anything can be reversed; these are human decisions.”

He emphasises: “The more privilege you have, the more opportunity you have. The more opportunity you have, the more responsibility you have.”

The next step is to now give a “paper abacus” to the students, and ask them to push imaginary beads on the paper. Since only 4 lower beads and 1 upper bead maximum can be moved at any one time, visualizing and memorizing their position is a cinch.

The “paper abacus” is then taken away, and students are trained to push totally imaginary beads in the air. The result is a “virtual calculator” imprinted on the child’s mind. I have watched the national finals of mental abacus competitions in Taiwan. It is quite a sight to behold. Thousands of adults in a hall watching three little five-year-olds on stage, standing in front of a table with a large poster-size board and a marker in the right hand. The announcer shouts out, “OK, Section 4. Ten numbers of 4 digits each, mixed addition and subtraction! Ready…

Start! 7,428, plus, 4206, minus, 2,471, plus, 3092, minus, 5310, etc etc… answer?” And all this at the speed of a salesman at a fish market. The very minute he stops speaking, all three little cuties raise their marker pens

and write the answer in big digits across the poster board and raise them up immediately for the crowd to see. And, of course, they were correct. And I was still trying to figure what came after 7,428…

Showmanship aside, mental abacus is extremely beneficial to brain development.

Students develop better concentration, longer attention span, more fluent eye-hand coordination, more interaction between right and left brains, and stronger memory.

Many parents were astonished to find that their children made progress in all subjects in school after taking up mental abacus!

Of course, we offer mental abacus at Pax Academy, and I have seen firsthand the benefits of this skill on students. It is never too late to learn, and though I have long crossed the half-century threshold, I tried training along with my students this year. Amazingly, I actually felt rusty gears grinding away in my brain while students chugged along happily. Friends, if you want to avert the onset of Alzheimer, keep your brain young and exercise it!

Public satisfaction in US remains depressed An average of 26% of Americans said they were satisfied with the way things were going in the United States in 2012, an improvement from 17% in 2011. Still, satisfaction remains depressed compared with the historical average of 38%.

The 2011 average of 17% satisfaction was one of the lowest in Gallup records dating back to 1979, with only a 15% average from 2008 lower. The highest yearly averages were 60% in 1998 and 2000. Satisfaction has

averaged below 30% each year since 2007.

Gallup asks Americans about satisfaction monthly and reported 14 separate measurements in 2012, ranging from a low of 18% in January to a high of 33% in November.

Satisfaction had generally shown improvement, particularly in the fall months when it was at or exceeded 30% from September through mid-November, before falling back to 23% in December. Gallup

US employment figures remain unchanged

Unemployment figures remain constant as government struggles with fiscal cliff negotiations The unemployment rate in the US has held at 7.8 percent in December and remained unchanged for a constant four months.

Fed to tighten rules for foreign banks in U.S. The United States Federal Reserve plans to subject large foreign banks to the same rigorous standards applied to U.S. banks. This includes subjecting them to stress tests.

Draft rules were unveiled Friday and obtained by the media.

The new rules, which if finalized will come into effect on July 1, 2015, would apply to around 107 foreign banks, and another 26 or 27 foreign nonbank financial institutions.

It says foreign banks with global assets of more than $50 billion that are active inside the United States will be subject to credit-exposure limits under the regulations, with more lenient rules for smaller foreign banks.

The regulatory regime that was tightened for U.S. banks in the wake of the financial crisis four

years ago would be effectively extended to foreign banks doing business in the United States.

CAIR Asks FBI to Probe Shooting of ‘Middle Eastern’ Man in Fla. The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) today called on the FBI to investigate a shooting attack in which the alleged perpetrator objected to a man perceived as “Middle Eastern” and Muslim being in the company of a “white” woman.

CAIR-FL said the two people attacked in the incident were harassed with racial slurs, including shouting “n**ger with a white girl,” as they were leaving a local Walmart at 3 a.m. today. A police report in-

dicates that the shooting victim was asked if he is Middle Eastern and whether he is Muslim. He reportedly answered “no” to each question.

The alleged attacker shot the man at least twice in the face with a pellet gun. Local law enforcement authorities are in-

vestigating the incident (Police Report 13-163) as a hate crime.

Woman with Sword Arrested at Mosque, Muslim School a woman carrying a sword was arrested after entering a mosque on a school campus.CAIR-FL said the incident occurred this morning on the campus of Leaders Preparatory School in Orange County, Fla. The woman, 47-year-old Dominique Eloi, was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, disrupting a school function and aggravated assault with a weapon.

Congressional critics of bin Laden film step up pressure on CIA Three U.S. senators, including the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, have stepped up their pressure on the CIA over its response to “Zero Dark Thirty,” a new film about the hunt for Osama bin Laden.

In a letter sent to the CIA and released on Thursday, Dianne Feinstein, the head of the Intelligence Committee, Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin and Senator John McCain asked the agency for evidence that “enhanced interrogation techniques” produced information that helped U.S. authorities locate and kill the al Qaeda leader in May 2011.

The letter is the latest broadside in a renewed political fight over enhanced interrogation techniques, which some equate with torture, touched off by the nationwide premiere of “Zero Dark Thirty” on Jan. 11.

The movie depicts a detainee being subjected to harsh interrogation techniques, which President George W. Bush’s administration later abandoned, and suggests they played a

role in finding bin Laden, who was behind the Sept.

11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Last month, in response to an earlier letter from the senators, acting CIA director Michael Morell said in a statement that some of the information that led agency analysts to conclude that bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad, Pakistan, “came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques but there were many other sources as well.”

In their latest letter, sent on Monday, the lawmakers said that an Intelligence Committee review of the CIA’s post-Sept. 11 interrogation and detention program determined that an agency detainee who provided the most accurate information about a courier who led the CIA to bin Laden “provided the information prior to being subjected to coercive interrogation techniques.”

A lengthy report on the investigation, which the committee approved last month in a mostly partyline vote, remains highly classified.

Feinstein, Levin and McCain requested the CIA produce evidence to back up Morell’s assertion that useful information related to the hunt for bin Laden came from detainees subjected to harsh techniques, and whether it was obtained before, during or after enhanced interrogations.

The senators’ release of the letter came a day after Reuters reported that Feinstein’s committee was reviewing CIA records about the agency’s interactions with “Zero Dark Thirty” filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal to see if the spy

agency gave them “inappropriate” access to secret material.

The committee also will investigate whether CIA personnel are responsible for the film’s portrayal of harsh interrogation practices and the implication that they were effective, a person familiar with the matter said.

Extradited al-Qaeda suspect “ Abid Naseer “faces US court Abid Naseer, 26, was extradited on Thursday from Britain to Brooklyn, New York. He is facing up to life in prison on charges including providing material support to al-Qaeda and conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction in connection with an alleged plot to bomb a city centre in Manchester, England.

The charges against Naseer are also connected to an alleged alQaeda plot in 2009 to bomb the subway system in New York City, US prosecutors said.

Two men, Nahibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay, have pleaded guilty to planning the attacks and a third man, Adis Medunjanin, was sentenced to life in prison after his conviction last year for taking part in the plot.

During a brief court appearance in Brooklyn federal court on Friday, Naseer pleaded not guilty to the charges through his court-appointed lawyer.

The judge ordered Naseer to be held in detention without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 7.

Naseer is one of a dozen men, mostly students from Pakistan, who were arrested in Brtiain in 2009 on suspicion of plotting to bomb a city centre in Manchester.

Multi-national conspiracy British authorities conducted daylight raids on the suspects’ homes after Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism official was photo-

graphed openly carrying details about the operation.

British authorities said they found large quantities of flour and oil in the suspects homes, as well as highlighted surveillance photographs of public areas in Manchester and a map of the city centre.

Naseer and the other suspects were never charged, but British and US authorities said Naseer was part of a broader al-Qaeda cell bent on staging attacks in the US and Scandanavia.

Naseer was indicted in Brooklyn federal court in 2010, along with Medunjanin and other individuals alleged to be linked through a multi-national al-Qaeda conspiracy.

US prosecutors said Naseer and Zazi co-ordinated their plans through emails to the same Pakistan-based al-Qaeda facilitator, “Ahmad”, using similar code words to discuss explosives and the timing of their respective plots.

Naseer was re-arrested by British authorities in 2010 after a US warrant was issued.

He fought extradition, saying he feared he could be sent from the US to Pakistan and subjected there to torture.

Naseer’s appeal was rejected last month by the European Court of Human Rights, paving the way for him to stand trial in the US.

US credit agency sues JP Morgan again

Agency lawsuit alleges bank misportrayed $2.2b in risky mortgage securities, leading to collapse of three credit unions US federal regulators have launched a lawsuit against financial firm JP Morgan Chase & Co over the sale of risky mortgage securities that contributed to the collapse of three credit unions.

The National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) lawsuit, filed on Friday, alleges that the country’s largest bank misled US Central, Western Corporate and Southwest Corporate federal credit unions into buying $2.2b in risky mortgage securities that caused major financial losses.

The three unions became insolvent due to the losses and were placed in NCUA conservatorship, the agency said.

“The damage caused by the actions of firms like Washington Mutual has been extremely expensive to contain and repair,” NCUA board chairman Debbie Matz said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.

She added that “it’s only right that the people who caused the damage be required to pick up that burden, as well.”

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of cases JPMorgan is fighting over conduct tied to the financial crisis, including the conduct of

entities it acquired at the height of the crisis.

The NCUA says in the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Kansas, that Washington Mutual, acquired by JP Morgan in 2007, misportrayed how risky the securities were and omitted key facts in sales documents.

It was the NCUA’s third lawsuit against JP Morgan over losses from mortgage securities In December, it sued the bank over $3.5b in securities sold by Bear Stearns, which JP Morgan acquired during the financial crisis.

In June 2011, the NCUA sued over $1.4b in securities, in which JP Morgan was the underwriter and seller.

Both suits are still pending.

In the past two years the agency has brought similar actions against Barclays Capital, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, RBS Securities, UBS Securities, Wachovia and others.

Most of the cases are pending, but it has settled claims against Citigroup, Deutsche Bank Securities and HSBC for around $170m.

House kills Violence Against Women Act The current term of Congress ended on Wednesday without re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act, a nearly two-decade-old measure to aid victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Though the Senate approved the VAWA last year with bipartisan support, Republicans in the U.S. House had opposed the legislation because it added new protections for illegal immigrants, LGBT individuals, and Native Americans.

“The House Republican leadership’s failure to take up and pass the Senate’s bipartisan and inclusive VAWA bill is inexcusable,” Sen. Rather than vote on the Senate version of the VAWA, House Republicans passed their own watered-down version of the bill that omitted the new provisions. The White House warned it would veto the House bill, which was opposed by groups like the National Network to End Domestic Violence, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence, the American Bar Association, and others because it ignored vulnerable populations.

New anti-Muslim ‘Quran quote’ ads go up in NYC subways The group that equated Muslim radicals with savages in advertisements last year has put up another set of provocative ads featuring quotes from the Quran in dozens of New York City subway stations.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative purchased space next to 228 clocks in 39 stations for ads with an image of the burning World Trade Center and a quote attributed to the Quran saying: “Soon shall we cast terror into the hearts of the unbelievers.”

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said the ads went up Monday and will run for a month.

The same group paid for ads to be displayed in 10 stations in September.

Those ads implied enemies of Israel are “savages.”

In October, a group of Jewish organizations in the United States joined a coalition of religious groups critical of an anti-Islam ad in the Washington DC metro system and urged that the profits made from the ad be donated to a charity.

Countering the placement “of offensive, anti-Muslim ads in the D.C.

Metro system is an important opportunity to affirm our commitment both to free speech and to a society that deplores hate and hate speech,” said Rabbi Batya Steinlauf, according to Global News Service of the Jewish People website.

Rabbi Steinlauf is the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington’s director of social justice and interfaith initiatives, and president of the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington.

“We are all part of one community,” she told the website.

A similar ad in the New York subway system was sprayed-over in September by Egyptian-American activist Mona Eltahway, who was briefly detained and argued that her move was an act of freedom of expression just as the ad was.

The MTA also sold space last year to competing advertisements that urged tolerance.

Qatar-based network to launch Al Jazeera America, reaching 40 million US homes, up from 4.7 million before the deal Al Jazeera Media Network has announced that it has acquired US cable channel Current TV. The Qatar-based network said on Thursday that with the acquisition it plans to create Al Jazeera America, a US-based news channel. Al Jazeera’s coverage will soon be available in more than 40 million US households, up from 4.7 million prior to the deal.

Terms were undisclosed, but analysts told the Reuters news agency the deal could be worth an estimated $500m. The new channel will be headquartered in New York City.

In addition to the existing Al Jazeera news bureaus in New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago, Al Jazeera will open additional bureaus in key locations across the United States. It will also double its US-based staff to more than 300 employees.

The deal brings Al Jazeera into closer competition with American news channels like CNN, MSNBC and Fox. The award-

winning channel is seen in more than 260 million homes in 130 countries, but has had limited access to US markets.

“For many years, we understood that we could make a positive contribution to the news and information available in and about the United States and what we are announcing today will help us achieve that goal,” Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, director general of Al Jazeera, said in a statement.

“By acquiring Current TV, Al Jazeera will significantly expand our existing distribution footprint in the US, as well as increase our newsgathering and reporting efforts in America.”

Common goals Al Jazeera said its new USbased news channel would be separate from Al Jazeera English, and would provide both domestic and international news for American audiences.

The new channel is scheduled to begin broadcasting in 2013.

Current Television was set up seven years ago by former US vice president Al Gore.

Although Current TV has been struggling for ratings, it nonetheless reaches 60 million American households, according to its own figures.

Anti-government protests sweep Iraq Thousands of Sunni Iraqis have taken to the streets of Baghdad and other parts of the country to decry the alleged targeting of their minority, in rallies hardening opposition to the country’s Shia leader.

Counter-demonstrations were held on Friday in predominantly Shia areas of southern Iraq calling for authorities to resist demands to reform anti-terror laws or consider a wide-ranging prisoner release, both key demands in majority-Sunni areas.

The protests have worsened a political crisis, pitting Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki against his erstwhile government partners, with the premier facing accusations of authoritarianism and sectarianism ahead of key provincial polls.

Anti-government protests were held in Baghdad’s mostly-Sunni districts of Adhamiyah and Ghazaliyah, as well as the cities of Ramadi, Samarra, Mosul and

Rights groups have criticised Saudi Arabia over the beheading of a young Sri Lankan domestic worker accused of killing an infant left in her care in 2005.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said in a statement run by the official SPA news agency that Rizana Nafeek was executed in the town of Dawadmy, near the capital Riyadh, on Wednesday morning.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry said Nafeek was sentenced to death in 2007 after her Saudi employer accused her of killing his infant daughter while she was bottle-feeding.

“President Mahinda Rajapaksa made a personal appeal on two occasions immediately after the confirmation of the death sentence, and a few days ago to stop the execution and grant a pardon to Miss Rizana Nafeek,” the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

London-based Rights organisation Amnesty International said the passport Nafeek used to enter Saudi Arabia in May 2005 stated she was born in February 1982, but her birth certificate states she was born six year later, which would have made her 17 at the time of the infant’s death.

He now presents his show “Elbernameg” (Arabic for “The Program”) on the privatelyowned “CBC” Egyptian satellite channel.

In one sketch of the episode, Youssef also lampooned the TV channel, saying it aligned to remnants of the Mubarak regime.

But when a cash machine graphic pops up on the screen next Youssef, an intentional tongue-in-cheek reminder to the host that the channel is paying his wage, he changes course and praises CBC for “inciting the revolution,” joking that the channel is revolutionary after all.

“If Dr. Yousef wants to satirically mock other people’s actions and words, then he must know this is a channel with aims towards democracy, which is why no one should take things personally,” Adeeb said on his talk show which followed Youssef’s.

“But there is a red line, for those who understand the real

difference between political satire and what can be legally be seen as an insult and defamation,” Adeeb added.

“Egyptians have a long history as the region’s funny men. In many other Arab countries, Egyptians are known as “ibn nukta”, or “the son of jokes”.

Aleppo, Syria - On the surface, life appears normal in opposition-held districts in Aleppo, Syria’s war-torn commercial capital. Bustling crowds pack markets, and traffic congests its main streets.

But the scene of ordinary life is dangerously deceptive, as at any given moment a Syrian fighter jet or artillery shell could strike the urban centre and incinerate the precarious normality.

Few Syrians, however, complain about shelling and air strikes here these days. Their main concern is providing their families with food.

“We can’t find bread and when we do, we can’t afford to pay for it. The price has increased at least threefold,” resident Mohammed Ali told Al Jazeera.

He blamed the rebels for his misery. “They promised

that they would make sure that basic commodities are available. They aren’t able to do that. They don’t even subsidise the prices,” he said. “The rebels should get rid of the corruption in the city before they fight battles elsewhere.”

Many residents of the city feel the same way, with little criticism against the Syrian government now overheard in conversations on the streets. Indeed, public anger now is firmly directed towards the rebel forces.

Once a thriving financial centre, Aleppo is that no longer. Rebels stormed the city in mid-July and were able to set up bases in the poorer, mainly Sunni neighbourhoods. Syria’s opposition is mainly made up of Sunnis, but Aleppo’s multi-ethnic and multi-class make-up hasn’t always worked to the benefit rebel fighters.

Aleppo stalemate The city is now carved up into government- and opposition-controlled districts, with battle lines in some quarters drawn only metres apart. For weeks there has been a stalemate with both sides unable to make any major territorial advances.
