Justice Brings Peace By, Dr. Mohammad Riyad

A lasting peace must be based on just solution; we cannot accomplish lasting peace in Palestine without addressing the essential elements of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israel had withdrawn its troops and settlors from the Gaza strip a few years ago

but retained control of Gaza’s airspace, Mediterranean waters and their shared border, it had imposed siege on the strip since 2007.

The people of Gaza ever since had been suffering from the lack of adequate healthy water, adequate medical supplies, and oth-

er essential goods and from the imposed unreasonable restrictions on their ability to travel and connect with the outside world!

Frustration sparks anger and anger leads to extremism. Israel expects the people of Gaza to suffer peacefully! This is just not realistically practical.

Absent truth in our lives The abuse by Muslims of their own religion is worse than that of others, and allows and justifies others to do the same.

Here, we realise our own responsibility for the disasters and setbacks that afflict us because of one main and important reason: lack of truth and subsequent lack of honesty in word and deed, loss of conscience, treachery and shameful behaviour. This is all contrary to true faith.

Insulting the other is primarily linked to conflicting interests and perceptions, histories of clashes and wars, and understandings — at least for some — that are peppered with misjudgments and stern behaviour. But for a Muslim to defame himself and his faith is something we must stand against with resolve.

Self-deprecation can be explained in many ways, including misunderstanding of religion and subsequent exaggerations, fanaticism and extremism without cause.

Also, contradictions between the fundamentals of faith and applying them in reality; focusing on the superficial rather than the core; lack of rationale and endeavour in light of human advancement; and haste in reaching conclusions without scientific discourse. These are all elements that contradict the core of faith that Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) taught us.

He is quoted as saying that faith is what

resides in the heart and truth in action.

Faith here means Allah, his prophet, teachings of the Quran and Sunna (practices) of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).

Without belief in the heart and evidence in action, faith is lacking and perhaps even non-existent. A person may say the testimonial of the faith, memorise the Quran and be aware of the Sunna, but practices none of it. This is where faith is lost, or is at least incomplete. But of course, final judgement is always left to Allah.

In contemporary Egypt, Iraq, Libya and others, we see people taking life — which Allah prohibits except in justice — in the worst, cruelest, treacherous and insidious methods. In their statements, they quote verses from the Quran to justify their actions and boast that they killed this many officers and soldiers, destroyed these many public and private buildings, disrupted the lives of Muslims, and stirred fear in their hearts as a precursor to imposing blind obedience that negates their minds and destroys their souls. Once in a while, they issue direct threats against the lives of people, leaders and figures they view as opposed to them and their malicious plans. They believe that is the essence of jihad in the name of Allah and his true religion.

This is a serious contradiction of word and deed, between claiming to be religious and upholding faith and insulting Islam itself and the good prophet (PBUH). In fact, they are furnishing justification and reason for anyone to further insult Islam and Muslims under the pretext that their

religion does not respect the right to life, or the natural diversity of people’s beliefs and behaviours. Also, that it is a stagnant religion that does not recognise progress, which is a universal process created by Allah who ordered us to contemplate it and think it about deeply, delve into its origins and implications in order to realise God’s great and limitless power and strengthen our faith in the capacity of the Almighty Creator. It should make us more adherent to His teachings in the Holy Quran and Sunna.

The contradiction of the words and deeds of some Muslims is not limited to individuals, groups or organisations, but also entire societies. And herein lies the threat to Islam and Muslims. When a Muslim fights another under the pretext that one of them is right and the other is wrong, and that the former will go to Heaven and the other to Hell, then this is a society that knows nothing about their religion — or at least generally does not have a deep understanding but instead incomplete knowledge. Although there are less extreme examples of individuals and groups, they are still deviant in understanding what faith means, namely the importance of an integrated Muslim person in understanding, behaviour and deed.

There are those who neglect their work and do not appreciate the current conditions in the country; those who betray and cheat to win something they do not deserve; those who receive privileges unduly; those who subvert truth and promote falsehoods in the name of venture and

Why ending child marriage in Africa can no longer wait Just 17 years old, Clarisse is already a mother of two, who lives with her husband and his four other wives in rural southern Chad. Three years earlier, she had watched her mom and sisters preparing food for a party one day. At first she celebrated along with everyone else, not realising it was her own wedding ceremony. When she discovered this, she was frantic.

“I tried to escape but [I] was caught. I found myself with a husband three times older than me... School was over, just like that. Ten months later, I found myself with a baby in my arms,” she says.

Clarisse is one of millions of girls around the world, and especially in Africa, who are married off each year. Many of them become wives as early as eight years old, often to much older men.

Globally, one in three girls from low and middle income countries is married before the age of 18, and one in nine by age 15. It is estimated that every year, over 15.1 million girls will become brides, if this trend continues.

Of the 41 countries worldwide with a child marriage prevalence rate of 30 per cent or more, 30 countries are located in Africa. The practice is most severe in West Africa, where two women out of five are married before age 18; and one woman out of six is married by the time she turns 15.

Several social, cultural, religious and traditional beliefs and norms are known to fuel the continuation of child marriage in Africa.

In addition, the economic dimension is a driving force of the practice. To many families living in poverty, child marriage is a source of income and therefore an economic survival strategy.

The impact of child marriage Regardless of the contributing factors and justifications cited for the practice, child marriage has a severe and harmful impact on our girls, and on society at large. It compromises the girl child’s health, education and opportunities to realise her potential.

Many ‘child wives’ are exposed to repeated pregnancies and childbirth before they are physically and psychologically ready.

In Sudan, Awatif, now 24, was married off at age 14 while still in school. Against her will, she dropped out of school in the fifth grade and immediately became pregnant. “I went through days of obstructed labour at home; it was painful and I thought I would die. My family took me to the hospital for assistance. I survived but my son didn’t and I contracted obstetric fistula,” she says. As a consequence, her husband abandoned and divorced her.

UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin says that “no society can afford the lost opportunity, waste of talent or personal exploitation that child marriage causes.”

Child marriage can be challenged Child marriage is a human rights and public health issue, which cannot be left unchallenged. First and foremost, it is a violation of human rights instruments, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

It is therefore an obligation of policy makers on the continent to protect the rights of the girl child that their governments have committed themselves to uphold. This includes putting an end to child marriage.

If the practice of child marriage is to be halted,

action is needed at all levels to change harmful social norms and to empower girls. Specifically, governments, civil society, community leaders and families that are serious about ending child marriage should consider promulgating, enforcing and building community support for laws on the minimum age of marriage.

Ending child marriage would not only help protect girls’ rights but would go a long way towards reducing the prevalence of adolescent pregnancy. Zero tolerance of child marriage should be our goal. Enacting laws that ban child marriage is a good first step – but unless laws are enforced and communities support these laws, there will be little impact.

Great efforts yielding promising results are being undertaken across the continent to challenge the status quo of this harmful practice.

We have witnessed good practices such as the Schools of Husbands in Niger and the Adolescent Girls Initiatives in many African countries.

In Mozambique, the initiative known as ‘Girls’ Forum’ has provided a platform for girls to improve their decision-making powers; to increase their sense of empowerment; and to build their understanding regarding questions of marriage and sexual and reproductive health.

Education is not only the key to unlocking girls’ potential; but it also contributes to girls delaying marriage across the continent. Studies have established that girls with low levels of education are more likely to be married early, while those with secondary education are up to six times less likely to marry as children.

Compulsory education for all, especially girls, is therefore a key intervention for policy makers to put into practice.

We should always boycott apartheid The most recent events in Gaza have shocked the conscience of the world so deeply that we have seen the largest pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the world that we have ever seen. From London, to Sydney, to South Africa, to Chicago, thousands have come out to demand a cessation to the bombing. Even fifteen years ago, during the Second Intifada, the global protest movement was not nearly as large. Something profound has occurred that has altered Israel’s ability to present its case to the world and have it be accepted as gospel.

First, the bombings of Gaza have produced a concentrated spectacle of what daily life in Gaza is like: bombing from Israeli Defense Forces, indiscriminate round-ups of Palestinians, collective punishment, inadequate access to food, water, and medicine, and the absolute disregard for civilian life. The bombing of hospitals, schools, UN refugee camps, apartment complexes, killing entire families, and even children playing on the beach are not “accidents” but the direct outcome of Israeli

policies which have turned Gaza into one of the most densely populated places on the earth and then deprived that population of basic necessities, including the freedom to move. The fact that Israel does the same things it is doing now even when there are no Hamas rockets on which to deflect attention gives lie to the claim that this has anything to do with self-defense.

As Noura Erekat, the legal scholar, has convincingly argued, Israel, like every other occupying power, has no right to self-defense. It has, rather, an obligation to preserve the lives of those it occupies, and it has flouted that obligation repeatedly.

Second, the rhetoric from inside Israel has shifted very decisively towards the far-right.

The anecdotes reported in the media are chilling enough: the burning alive of an innocent Palestinian boy by an Israeli lynch mob; soccer fans shouting “death to Arabs!”; Israeli youth patrolling the streets with Kahanist t-shirts; the repeated accusations that one is not a citizen of Israel if one is not loyal to its military campaigns; and on and on. But even worse have been the reports of what has been said by the political establishment.

Ayelet Shaked, member of Israel Beiteinu, called for the deaths of Palestinian mothers since they give birth to “more little snakes.”

Despite knowing that the three teenage Israeli

youth who had been feared to be kidnapped were actually dead, Prime Minister Netanyahu whipped up racist hysteria and did nothing to stop the mobs from attacking Palestinians in the streets. The once popular belief that Israel represented the leading force for democracy and social justice in the Middle East has been betrayed by the rampant racism, chauvinism, and xenophobia.

Finally, as these lines are being written, new protests have emerged in the West Bank. A march from Ramallah to Jerusalem, one of the largest in a decade, has unleashed the spirit of the third Intifada. Pictures of protesters tearing down the separation (also known as the “apartheid”) wall that Israel used to annex unlawfully more of the West Bank. The spirit of unity that was only formally represented in the alliance announced between Hamas and Fatah a few months ago has become transformed into a truly popular and nationally unity against the horrors that Israel is committing in Palestine.

Two years after the revolutionary movements of the Arab Spring, it seems that the spirit of popular rebellion has come to Palestine as well.

These new processes have altered the narrative of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict substantially, even as they have not yet fully been able to transform the political commitments of the

By Hassan Abou Taleb courage to earn the admiration of their peers, translating this admiration into position and wealth or transient moral influence; those who resort to sordid manoeuvres and instigate chaos.

These are all examples of bad Muslims, hypocrites, liars who are audacious, disloyal and treacherous, no matter how much of the Quran they boast to have memorised. Once these people become a group that is only concerned with seizing power at any cost, they are a stark example of insulting their religion, themselves and the teachings of the prophet (PBUH).

Standing up to these people with full strength and resolve is a fundamental of true faith. A true Muslim is responsible in front of the Creator and his conscience for what should be done to confront these people, and present a correct model of understanding faith and apply its teachings.

Allowing these people to wreak havoc has nothing to do with Islam, and anyone who allows it is encouraging these people to spread more havoc and corruption.

Let us contemplate the clear warning in verse 27 in Surat Al-Anfal: “O believers, do not betray Allah and the Prophet and what you are entrusted with, knowingly.”

If treachery afflicts a people, they lose their direction and fail in their quests; they are humiliated and become reliant; and want and need spreads among them. They become a weak and helpless people who fall prey to others and cannot defend themselves. Allah shield us from the fate of those who betray and misjudge.

By Julitta Onabanjo, Benoit Kalasa, Mohamed Abdel-Ahad The African Union and the End Child Marriage campaign The continent has witnessed renewed political commitment to addressing the problem of child marriage by African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana DlaminiZuma. “We must do away with child marriage,” she says. “Girls who end up as brides at a tender age are coerced into having children while they are children themselves.” This commitment is being taken into practice through the launch of a new campaign to end child marriage in Africa.

The overall aims of the campaign are to (i) end child marriage by supporting policy and action in the protection and promotion of human rights, (ii) mobilize continental awareness of child marriage, (iii) remove barriers to and bottlenecks in law enforcement, (iv) determine the socio-economic impact of child marriage, and (v) increase the capacity of non-state actors to undertake evidence-based policy dialogue and advocacy.

Joining force to commit to girls’ achieving their potential UNFPA believes the AU campaign to end child marriage represents a turning point in the fight to end child marriage in Africa. It is time that we no longer tolerate children becoming brides.

The time has come to commit to ensuring our girls are able to achieve their full potential.

The African continent has tolerated child marriage for too long, based on a host of ill-conceived justifications and arguments. But our young girls, who have borne the brunt of this detrimental practice to date, cannot wait to see it banished forever. Child marriage should not be allowed to continue. Not one day longer.

The French government declared a ban on protests in support of Israel. The European Union even balked at the opportunity to condemn Israel for killing citizens of the EU, Ibrahim al-Kilani, his wife, and five children. Despite the shift in global public opinion decisively towards support for the Palestinian cause, the leadership of the most powerful countries in the world remains decisively committed to Israeli apartheid and occupation.

This is the context in which the calls for boycott, divestment, and sanctions have to be understood and the reasons why ordinary people throughout the world must press harder and harder for a movement for BDS. It was as a consequence of the struggles of black South Africans that global civil society was inspired to isolate apartheid South Africa through a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions in the 1980s. The parallels to today could not be clearer. The refusal of Israel to stop its criminal war on Gaza and the refusal of the world powers to act mean that the job falls to the only two actors capable of making social change: the Palestinians and global civil society. The former has already acted and sacrificed—lives, health, dignity, and freedom. It falls on the rest of us to heed their call.

Seventy percent of Americans, including 86 percent of Republicans, believe undocumented immigrants threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs, according to the poll. With Congress failing to agree on broad immigration reform, Obama could act alone by summer’s end and extend work permits – and relief from deportations – to millions of undocumented immigrants, according to media reports. Despite arguments from the White House and business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that immigration benefits the economy, 63 percent of people in the online survey said immigrants place an economic burden on the country.

Mom sues South Dakota police for using Taser on 8-year-old daughter Child reportedly thrown against wall by shock; police say girl was suicidal and they may have saved her life A woman is suing a South Dakota city, its former police chief and four other officers for shooting her 8-yearold daughter with a Taser. Dawn Stenstrom said in the suit that police from the city of Pierre used excessive force and violated her daughter’s civil rights.

An officer fired the electric shock device’s darts into the chest of the girl, who weighed 70 pounds, the lawsuit said. “The force of the electricity shot through her body, lifted her and threw her against a wall,” it said. “After the

officers had stunned [the girl] into high voltage submission, they pulled the fishhook-like Taser darts from her chest, gave her emergency medical attention, bandaged the holes left by the razor-sharp hooks and called the ambulance.”

The incident occurred in October 2013, when the girl’s babysitter called police after seeing the girl holding a knife, with unknown intentions. The lawsuit was filed on July 24 in federal court and recently surfaced in media reports.

Authorities said the girl was suicidal and had turned the knife toward an officer. State investigators concluded that the officer’s use of the weapon was justified because it was the safest method to defuse the situation.

But Stenstrom disagreed, saying there were other ways for the four police officers to subdue the child and adding that Tasers can kill. At least 500 people have been killed by stun guns in the United States since 2001, according to Amnesty International.

Proponents argue that the weapons are safe, nonlethal alternatives to guns and have prevented thousands of deaths.

Dana Hanna, Stenstrom’s attorney, told the local news website Rapid City Journal that the girl suffered physical, psychological and emotional injuries. The former Pierre police chief told CNN news that police may have “saved this girl’s life.” Stenstrom and her daughter, both members of the Rosebud Sioux tribe, have since moved back to the tribal reservation, CNN said.

Almashreq editorial staff/ news analyst finder: Former employees and customers alleged the luxury store targeted minority shoppers with extra surveillance Luxury department store Barneys New York has agreed to pay $525,000 to resolve allegations that minorities were singled out as suspected shoplifters at its flagship store in New York City, part of a spate of racial profiling complaints against major retailers last year.

Barneys shoppers and ex-employees alleged that security guards followed minority race customers around — even after staffers identified them as frequent patrons.

It was also alleged that minorities were disproportionately investigated for credit-card fraud – so much so that salespeople even avoided serving minority shoppers so as to avoid getting calls from store investigators, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in announcing the settlement on Monday. Besides the $525,000 in fines and expenses, Barneys will hire an “antiprofiling consultant” for two years, update its policy and record keeping on detaining customers suspected of theft, and improve training of security and sales personnel.

“This agreement will correct a number of wrongs, both by fixing past policies and by monitoring the actions of Barneys and its employees to make sure that past mistakes are not repeated,” Schneiderman said in a release.

Barneys CEO Mark Lee said in a statement that the company was pleased with the settlement, first reported by the New York Daily News. According to the newspaper, profiling started in March 2013, with the hiring of a new chief of security.

“Barneys New York has prided itself on providing an unparalleled customer experience to every person that comes into contact with our brand – open and welcoming to one and all,” Lee’s statement said.

The attorney general’s investigation came after Barney’s shoppers Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips, both of whom are black, said last fall they were detained by city police in separate incidents after making expensive purchases at the Madison Avenue luxury emporium.

Both Christian and Phillips have filed separate lawsuits against the NYPD. Neither case has yet been resolved.

The News reported that plainclothes NYPD police stopped Christian, 19, after he bought a pricey belt, accusing him of stealing, and Phillips, 21, after she purchased an expensive handbag, accusing her of credit-card fraud.

Christian’s lawyer noted on Monday that a review last fall – commissioned

by Barneys – found the store did not have a written or unwritten policy to profile customers. “We are pleased that Barney’s has acknowledged their responsibility,” said Christian’s lawyer, Michael B. Palillo. “We are hopeful that this offensive and discriminatory conduct will finally come to an end.”

Civil-rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton met with Lee to discuss the issue, and the furor spurred an online petition asking rapper Jay-Z, who was collaborating with the luxury retailer for a holiday collection, to disassociate himself from it.

He ultimately decided to move forward with the project, which raised money for his charitable foundation, under the condition that he helped lead the store’s review of its policies.

Sharpton said in a statement Monday that Barneys’ agreement with the attorney general was a “move in the right direction,” but continued monitoring is needed.

Meanwhile, minority shoppers – including actor Rob Brown – made similar complaints last year against New York stores including Macy’s, which paid a $600,000 fine and promised changes in 2005 after the then-attorney general made similar claims.

Report: US unfairly targeted Arabs, Muslims Many of the 500 terrorism cases prosecuted in US federal courts since 2001 appear to have targeted individuals who were not actually involved in terrorist plots or financing them and likely would not have committed acts of violence, according to the report by Human Rights Watch and the Columbia University Law School’s Human Rights Institute.

“Five hundred is a number that sounds really big and it makes it sound like Americans are being kept safe from terrorism attacks, but we found that in a lot of these cases, people were prosecuted who never would have committed a terrorist act in the first place if it weren’t for the involvement of the FBI,” said Andrea J Prasow, senior counterterrorism counsel at HRW and a co-author of the report.

‘Illusion of justice’ The report, titled “Illusion of Justice: Human Rights Abuses

in US Terrorism Prosecutions,” details a pattern of US law enforcement targeting American Arabs and Muslims in FBI “sting” operations in which informants cajoled, pressured, and sometimes even bribed young men to participate in plots created by law enforcement. The sweeping laws enacted by Congress after 9/11 helped create a conducive atmosphere, according to critics.

“The report details account after account of overzealous prosecution, unfair trials, overaggressive informants, targeting of vulnerable young men, and encouraging them to do things they wouldn’t have otherwise done and then incredibly long, harsh sentences,” said David Cole, a professor at Georgetown University Law School who specialises in national security issues.

In a statement to Al JazeeraAmerica, the Department of Justice’s spokesman Marc Raimondi said that many of the

decisions the report criticises were lawful and approved by federal judges.

Last year, Colorado was among eight states that passed laws allowing identification documents

to start in January. “The changes we’ve seen in Colorado are absolutely remarkable and really reflect a turning of the tide in the debate on what immigration means and how immigrants are viewed, not only in Colorado but in the country,” said Hans Meyer, a Denver-based immigration attorney who was involved in crafting the new law.

Still, there are detractors who argue this will encourage illegal immigration.

“You reward illegal behavior, you beget more illegal behavior,” said state Sen. Ted Harvey, a Republican.

Supporters of the law say it will lead to safer roads because drivers who get licenses will have a better understanding of the rules when they pass the required tests, and law enforcement will correctly

identify people in traffic stops and accidents.

Colorado immigrants started making appointments to get licenses and identification cards July 1. Immigrants with temporary legal permits do not have to make appointments, only those in the country illegally. Those without legal status must show documents such as utility bills to prove they have lived in Colorado the previous two years, in addition to an identification number they have used to pay taxes.

They must also show a passport or other identification from their home country. Those with temporary legal status must present the documents that prove that, as well as evidence that they’re Colorado residents. Driver’s licenses will cost $50.50, higher than the $21 that legal residents pay. Identification cards will be $14, also higher than the $10.50 paid by everyone else. The new program will be supported by user fees.

The documents must be renewed every three years, and the cards will be marked to say they can’t be used for voting or to obtain federal benefits. In Oregon, one of the eight states that passed a driver’s license legislation last year, opponents collected enough signatures to put the law on hold and ask voters in November whether it should be implemented.

The executive director of Human Rights Watch and another senior staff member have been denied entry to Egypt after being held at Cairo’s international airport for 12 hours.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of the New York-based rights group, and HRW Middle East director Sarah Leah Whitson were held overnight before being denied entry, Whitson wrote on Twitter.

“It’s official - shortest visit to Cairo ever - 12 hours before deportation for ‘security reasons’- the new Egypt certainly ‘transitioning’,” Whitson wrote.

The rights activists had flown to Cairo for the release of a report to mark a year since the mass killing of an estimated 700 opposition protesters by security forces, in one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in decades.

“We came to Egypt to release a serious report on a serious subject that deserves serious attention from the Egyptian government,” Roth said in a statement.

“Rab’a massacre numbers rank with Tiananmen and Andijan but Egypt gov’t wouldn’t let me in to present report on it,” he wrote on Twitter.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Sarah Leah Whitson, said the decision to deny HRW entry into the country was one more signal of the attitude and disposition of the Egyptian government towards an independent and robust

civil society.

Interior Ministry spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif said he had no immediate response to the barring of the Human Rights Watch executives or the report.

However, he said Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights had conducted its own investigation into the dispersals.

“The Egyptian judiciary will have its say, and its decisions will be the ones to be implemented,’’ Abdel-Latif said.

Rights groups have warned of the sharp deterioration in human rights in Egypt since the overthrow of the country’s elected President Mohamed Morsi by the former army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in July 2013.

Human Rights Watch’s European media director, Andrew Stroehlein, said it was the first time authorities in Egypt had denied entry to HRW staff, including under Hosni Mubarak, the deposed prime minister.

HRW said it had closed its office in Cairo in February because of concerns about the deteriorating security and political environment in the country.

Authorities have imposed extensive restrictions on civil society organizations over the past year, HRW said in a statement on its website.

Relief rather than reconstruction has been the focus of outside groups as the war has exacted a brutal toll on the civilian population.

“The policy right now is that only humanitarian goods are allowed to go to Gaza,” Guy Inbar, spokesman for theCoordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) under Israel’s Ministry of Defense. “That includes food, water, fuel and medical supplies.”

He explained how Israel sees a security risk in allowing in construction materials such as cement, insisting on close monitoring of future supplies. “Instead of building Gaza and tak-

ing care of their population, they preferred using building materials for terror tunnels,” he said. “They would have been able to build a three-floor clinic for each tunnel.” Palestinians say the tunnels are a legitimate strategic component of selfdefense.

The U.N. refugee agency UNRWA has appealed for $115 million in immediate relief aid. Saudi Arabia has offered $53 million to the Palestinian Red Crescent, the UAE committed $41 million for home reconstruction, and U.S. humanitarian aid pledges total $47 million. The report, based on interviews with 125 Afghan victims, their family members and eyewitnesses to

the attacks, detailed 10 different incidents that ended with the deaths of at least 140 civilians, including at least 50 children. Among the incidents was a latenight raid on a home in February 2010 in Paktia province that left two pregnant women, two criminal justice officials and a teenage girl dead.

“Thousands of Afghans have been killed or injured

by U.S. forces since the invasion, but the victims and their families have little chance of redress. The U.S. military justice system almost always fails to hold its soldiers accountable for unlawful killings and other abuses,” said Richard Bennett, Amnesty International’s Asia Pacific Director.

The report notes that over the last five years, there have been only six cases in which military members were prosecuted for unlawfully killing Afghan civilians. The most notable case is that of Army Sgt. Robert Bales, who admitted killing 16 Afghan civilians in 2012 and was

sentenced to life in prison without parole last year.

But the report took aim at a lack of timely and unbiased investigations, laying blame on the military justice system itself, saying it fails civilian victims of military crimes due do the “self-policing” nature of its “commander-driven” system. According to Amnesty, the commander plays a key role in initiating investigations and deciding when to terminate them.

“It is a system in which, in most cases, there are no real incentives to report crimes against Afghan civilians, or to push forward

an investigation or prosecution or such crimes, and many disincentives to doing so,” the report said.

But the Department of Defense said U.S. forces “go to extraordinary lengths to avoid civilians casualties.”

“In those instances in which civilians have been killed or injured, afteraction reviews have been conducted to determine why, and to ensure that we are taking the most effective steps to minimize the risk of civilians being killed or injured in the future,” Defense Department spokeswoman Navy Cmdr.

UK-based department store John Lewis is offering for the first time the hijab in its school uniform department, the British daily news website Daily Mail reported Saturday.

John Lewis, which is due to sell the Islamic headscarf in its London and Liverpool stores, said it was responding to school demands.

“We provide uniforms for 350 schools across the country,” a spokesperson for

John Lewis said.

“The school informs us of the items they want us to sell as part of their uniform list,” he added.

The store, which signed contracts with two schools, will sell a hijab for approximately $15 (£9).

John Lewis won the contract to supply uniforms to the Islamia Girls’ School in north-west London and Belvedere Academy in Liverpool.

Average room price near Saudi Grand Mosque vicinity exceeds $13,000

The average price for a room in the vicinity of the Grand Mosque in Makkah has reached SR50,000 ($13,332) for the last 10 days of Ramadan, according to a report published in Makkah daily on Sunday.

This is because of a 25 percent increase in visitors to the Holy City as compared to the same period last year, and the lack of enough accommodations in view of the expansion work in and around the Haram.

Muhammad Tariq, a hajj and Umrah service provider supervisor, attributed the rush of visitors to the summervacation which coincided with Ramadan.

He said service charges for an Umrah pilgrim start at SR350 at the beginning of the holy month and reach SR2,000 during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

Salim Al-Dowsari, owner of an office for hajj and Umrah services, said there are more than 450 Umrah service providers in Riyadh.

They have been forced to increase their charges by 20 to 30 percent according to the services being provided.

The Ministry of Hajj said that more than 6.3 million Umrah visas have been issued so far this year, which is an increase of 900,000 over the same period last year.

Iranian Stanford professor first woman to win top math prize becoming a writer when she was young, but she pursued her love of solving mathematical problems.

Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani on Wednesday became the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal, mathematics’ equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

“This is a great honor. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians,” Mirzakhani was quoted as saying on Stanford’s website.

A professor at Stanford University in California, she was among four Fields Medal recipients at the InternationalCongress of Mathematicians held in Seoul and the first female among the 56 winners since the prize was established in 1936.

“I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years,” she said.

“It is fun. It’s like solving a puzzle or connecting the dots in a detective case. I felt that this was something I could do, and I wanted to pursue this path,” she said.

Cooking & Recipes Chicken Shawarma ingredients • 1/2 cup malt vinegar • 1/4 cup plain yogurt • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • salt and pepper to taste • 1 teaspoon mixed spice • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground cardamom • 8 skinless, boneless chicken thighs

Preparation :

• 1/2 cup tahini

1-In a glass baking dish, mix together the malt vinegar, 1/4 cup yogurt, vegetable oil, mixed spice, cardamom, salt and pepper. Place the chicken thighs into the mixture and turn to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.

• 1/4 cup plain yogurt • 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

2- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a small bowl, mix together the tahini, 1/4 cup yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and parsley. Season with salt and pepper, taste, and adjust flavors if desired. Cover and refrigerate.

3- Cover the chicken and bake in the marinade for 30 minutes, turning once. Uncover, and cook for an additional 5 to 10 minutes, or until chicken is browned and cooked through. Remove from the dish, and cut into slices.

• 4 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced • 1/2 cup sliced onion

4- Place sliced chicken, tomato, onion, and lettuce onto pita breads.

Roll up, and top with the tahini sauce.

• 4 cups shredded lettuce • 8 pita bread rounds

Arabic Fattoush Salad

“Fattoush is one of the most well-known Middle Eastern salads and a standard dish on the ‘mezza’ (small dishes) table. It’s a colorful tossed salad with a lemony garlic dressing, and if you’ve never made a single Arabic dish, this is a delicious and healthy place to start.”

Preparation :

ingredients • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil for frying

• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, or to taste

• 2 small (4 inch) pita breads, torn into pieces

• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, or to taste

• 1 large English cucumber, finely diced

• 1 clove garlic, crushed (or more to taste)

• 3 cups halved grape tomatoes

• kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

• 1/2 red onion, finely diced • 3/4 cup chopped Italian parsley • 3/4 cup chopped fresh mint

• ground sumac • crumbled sheep-milk feta cheese, or to taste

1- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Place pita pieces into the skillet without crowding. Fry in batches until golden brown and blot dry with paper towels.

2- Combine cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, parsley, mint, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, kosher salt, ground black pepper, and sumac in a bowl. Gently toss salad with fried pita pieces. Adjust seasonings to taste.
