LIONEL MOSS - MSSLIO001
The process of creating something from nothing is an activity that excites me greatly. Throughout my years in varsity, I have experienced such joy at the end of a project when I step back and take a moment to see what I have created over the previous weeks. There is just something about the result that sparks a flame within me. I believe in a design process rooted in a synthesis of tradition and innovation.
Drawing from the works of well-known architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, I understand architecture as a multisensory experience that transcends mere visual aesthetics. My decisions are guided by a deep understanding of context, culture, and human needs, echoing the sentiments of Wright’s assertion that architecture should engage the senses and evoke emotional responses between the built environment and nature.

NARRATIVE
Landscapes of Connection delves into various interconnected dimensions to develop a conceptual framework for designing an aquatic community centre within a dynamic community park bordering District Six. These dimensions encompass the rich histories of District Six and Woodstock, the significance of Trafalgar Park and its Swimming Pool as historical landmarks, as well as the diverse needs, aspirations, and involvement of the local community.
Landscapes of Connection delves into the theme of water, exploring its historical significance in Cape Town, particularly within the context of the Camissa and Trafalgar River systems. It examines water’s dual role as both a connector and a divider, as well as its diverse applications in sport, healing, recreation, and economic development.

Pole diameters are never measured at the thick end, as they taper about 5% per meter. SANS 10407 specifies that poles up to 6,6m long must have a diameter of 75-100mm, while longer poles must be thicker. SANS 10407 specifies a minimum layer thickness of 175mm. Structural connections must be bolted. Poles must be joined with 12mm bolts for spans of maximum 10m, and 16mm bolts for longer spans. • Laths are spaced at 300mm centres, except the bottom and top three laths that are spaced at 150mm centres. SANS 10407 requires that a maximum centre to centre spacing for rafters should be 900mm. The spacing of laths is determined by the average length of grass used. SANS 10407 tables the maximum lath spacing for a given grass length. • Only tarred sisal twine or stainless steel wire is to be used for stitching, with maximum spacing of 100mm. TASA recommends that overlapping thatch surfaces should be avoided, because drainage water inevitably falls onto lower thatch roofs that accelerates rotting of lower thatch surfaces. Lightning conductors must be installed to protected thatched roofs in accordance with the SABS Code of Practice. • Chimney stacks should be constructed so that the outer faces, in contact with thatch, do not become hot a 220mm thick brick wall is usually sufficient. Thatched roofs must be constructed only by contractor who is a member of the TASA, and therefore is compliant with their standards.
