Welcome! The colourful Danube Linz is particularly attractive by the Danube. There's art in the Donaupark, the Brucknerhaus, the Ars Electronica Center and the Lentos Kunstmuseum, the Linzer Schloss high above the river, and Hauptplatz as the gate to the Danube. The city is shaped by culture, nature, and business. However, in 2014 and 2015 we also consider many events that form the "myth of the Danube". Here, the historical events of Europe have taken place time and again in a dramatic, and yet also a pleasant way. The Romans, Nibelungs, crusades, Habsburgs – from the world empire to Sisi's bridal journey from Bavaria to Vienna –, Napoleon, and also the wars of the 20th century: Everything took place along the course of the Danube. Meanwhile, it continues on its course, and we invite you to relax, to reflect, to a cultural experience in one of Austria's most interesting cities. Dive into a region that stands for the future and for a peaceful and sustainable Europe. Linz's cultural programme is colourful, the facades are colourfully illuminated and you may discover many facets on your Danube adventures – whether on foot, by bike or by boat.

The Danube is the main artery of Europe. It is a multifaceted phenomenon, waiting to be discovered and experienced. It stands for diversity, and connects peoples and cultures. It fascinates and inspires – and the river is at the centre of tourist and cultural events in 2014. Nowhere is the Danube more colourful than in Linz. And that's not just to be taken literally, when the hitech facades of the Ars Electronica Center and Lentos Kunstmuseum are reflected in the Danube. Linz invites you to let yourself go, to be changed, to enjoy, and to discover something new. Even about yourself.

Innovation on the river Linz is the powerhouse of an entire economic region. And the Danube is its centre: First, it stimulated trade, and then manufacture became the principal factor for prosperity. In the 18th century, up to 50,000 people worked in the woollen mill alone! The worldfamous PEZ sweets were developed in Linz, the first public railway was built, and there were brilliant inventions in steel production. Recently, Linz start-up businesses like Runtastic have been conquering the globe. It's just Linz.

Waves of enthusiasm If you come to Linz by boat, you dock right beside the Donaupark. The Brucknerhaus, the Lentos Kunstmuseum, the Ars Electronica Center, and the Linzer Schloss are in sight. The Posthof, the OÖ Kulturquartier, the theatres, galleries, and museums have helped to establish Linz's reputation as a cultural city. And last but not least, the new Musiktheater is inspiring its audiences. Welcome to the Capital of Culture!

in Linz, the Danube flows right through the heart of the city. Here, Europe's main artery curves and changes direction. This is also expressed by the old names Lentos and Lentia. The river, lined with castles and monasteries, is steeped in legend and is a thoroughfare for the lively exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures. The

Upriver. Nowhere is the Danube as loud and colourful as in Linz. In the wide river, the dynamism of a successful city of culture and industry is reflected, as well as the opportunity for travellers to pause for thought and discover tranquillity.

Danube in Linz stands for pulsating dynamism. Culture and business have become a source of life and progress. The Danube – along with the European Region Danube-Vltava – is a uniquely romantic river and offers you the opportunity to slow down. Whether you enjoy the Danube along its course by bike or by boat ... water is both stimulating and soothing. Cultural variety on the river Linz and the Danube create a very special arena for exciting cultural developments. In 1569, the first opera was performed here, and Linz's own

theatre was built at the beginning of the 18th century. Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert often visited. The famous composer Anton Bruckner lived and worked in Linz, and was born here over 190 years ago. Linz, like the Danube, has always been in motion and forward-looking, and today, is one of the most interesting cultural cities. The Brucknerhaus was opened in 1974 on today's Culture Mile in the Donaupark. The world's most important conductors have had the honour to be at the annual International Bruckner Festival for forty years. The Linzer Klangwolken are a

particularly special event, which have transformed the Danube into a space for sound since 1979. Ars Electronica makes Linz the focus of international media art: With the Posthof, the Stadtwerkstatt, the Offenes Kulturhaus, the theatres, museums, galleries, and universities, the Festival stands for the diversity of a cultural network, which is more strongly committed to cooperation than is normally the case. Brilliant highlights of this development are "Linz – European Capital of Culture 2009" and the opening of Europe's most modern music theatre in April 2013.

Schlossmuseum The Renaissance building of the Linzer Schloss houses the most important objects in Upper Austria's art and cultural history.

Lentos Kunstmuseum The Lentos Kunstmuseum is a museum of the avantgarde. The collection consists of 1,500 works of painting, sculpture, and object art. Great names such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Andy Warhol are represented, and various special exhibitions are held.

Herbert Bayer (1900 – 1985) The famous artist Herbert Bayer comes from Upper Austria. He was among the most important members of Staatliches Bauhaus, which remains one of the most influential educational institutions in the sphere of architecture, art, and design. Bayer worked as a painter, photographer, graphic designer, commercial artist, and exhibition architect, and can almost be called a "universal artist". He also created the fountain sculpture in front of Linz's Brucknerhaus. As a result of a generous donation from the estate of his widow, Joella Bayer, in 2006, the Lentos Kunstmuseum now has 135 works from all periods of his work, the largest Bayer collection of any Austrian museum.

Ars Electronica Center This museum of the future is designed as an interface between art, research, and society. The Prix Ars Electronica, created in 1987, is of international significance, with famous prizewinners like John Lasseter from Pixar, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, one of the inventors of the Internet, and the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.

World-class architecture The Lentos Kunstmuseum, a modern architectonic jewel on the Danube, stands out just because of its unique design and colourful facade. But the collection is really worth a visit. Numerous exhibits by the designer, architect, photographer, and Bauhaus pioneer Herbert Bayer (1900–1985) are evidence of the strong influence that Austrian designers have had in the world. If you walk from Lentos towards the Brucknerhaus, you'll encounter larger-than-life sculptures of forum metall (see p. 8). Not far from the Brucknerhaus you can admire another of the architect's showpieces: The former Tabakfabrik was built by the architect and designer Peter Behrens and his assistant Alexander Popp in 1928, and is now used for art, culture, and business. As mentioned already, nowhere is the Danube as loud and colourful as in Linz.

Poetical Donauschule The influence that the Danube has on the artistic directions in the area is not something recent. At the end of the 15th century, an artistic movement had already been established with the Donauschule, which was known far beyond the borders. One of its prominent representatives was Albrecht Altdorfer from Regensburg, who created the "Sebastian Altar" in St. Florian's Priory near Linz.

The river of life

Die Donau hinab Atmospheric image of the Danube – with stories of the countries and people.

t 2,850 km, the Danube is the second longest river in Europe – after the Volga – and is one of the most important waterways. On its way to the Black Sea, it runs through no fewer than ten countries, from west to east. The cities through which it flows have a special atmosphere – and have always been fascinating. So it's no wonder that the literati, in particular, feel inspired by it.

The Danube is the leitmotif in the stories and episodes – and the source of new detailed knowledge. Magris' book, published in 1986, has become a standard work in thirty countries. The literary figure Karl-Markus Gauß also

In the beginning were the waters; and the spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters, and the spirit became word, and the word was Danube." Karl-Markus Gauß, „Die Donau hinab“

The language of the Danube For instance, the writer Claudio Magris from Trieste used a journey along the Danube as the basis for his book Danubio. He takes the reader with him on a fascinating trip through the history and landscape of a culture:

explored the Danube, together with the artist Christian Thanhäuser. The result is a work that came out in 2009, entitled „Die Donau hinab“. For this, Gauß invented his Danube Alphabet

as a stylistic device: Along the course of the river, he gives an account from A for Albahari (Serbian writer of Jewish origin) to Z for Zwiefalten of countries and history, as well as writers and scholars who once lived on the banks of the Danube. Lively literature Linz is especially proud of one of the writers and scholars who worked by the Danube: The famous painter and writer Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868) lived and worked in Linz for many years of his life. His most well-known works include Bunte Steine, Der Nachsommer, and Witiko. In the house in which Stifter lived and died, the StifterHaus is now situated,

which has a whole range of literature in its Literary Museum, from medieval minnesong by Walther von der Vogelweide to contemporary authors. Stifter's former study is dedicated to his memory, with authentic furnishings, manuscripts, and pictures. Two of the major literary figures of the post-war period also have close connections to Linz: The playwright Thomas Bernhard

(1931–1989), who lived in the Upper Austrian municipality of Ohlsdorf, in the district of Gmunden, from 1965 until his death, and is internationally renowned for his works on contemporary issues. The Landestheater Linz awards a Thomas Bernhard scholarship every year, to promote young literati. One of the major Austrian female writers is Marlen Haushofer (1920–1970), from Upper Austria: Early on, she thematised women's life experiences in her work, spent most of her school days in Linz, and is, of course, prominently represented in the archives of the StifterHaus.

Influential: Adalbert Stifter (1805–1868).

The influence of the Danube Monarchy Austria is inextricably linked with the history of the Danube Monarchy – it brought diverse culinary delicacies into the whole country. Bohemia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, and Trieste: Many influences of these countries' cuisines still shape our food today. Would you like a taste? Bohemian Serviettenknödel are on the menu in these parts, as are sweet Germknödel, delicious Topfengolatschen, Buchteln, and Powidltascherln. Wiener Tafelspitz, classic goulash, and Hascheeknödel also originate in the multinational state of the Danube Monarchy.

here's a reason why Linz is the leading location for numerous global players: the Danube. Centuries ago, a location on a river was already a decisive economic factor. A waterway connects, and creates an innovative spirit in the city, in whose environment the foundation stones for inventing the electric car and digital photography

were laid ... and the history of steel was written. Economic miracle The city continues to inspire today – even in Silicon Valley. The world-famous PEZ sweets from Traun near Linz led to the founding of eBay. The founder Pierre Omidyar gave his wife's passion

for collecting PEZ a platform and in this way, invented the world's largest online trading portal. And when recreational and professional athletes want to compare their training data using the world's most popular app for that purpose, the Linz start-up Runtastic runs with them. Linz has a transforming power – for our economic world too

The Danube – "source" of inspiration and innovation

Horse-drawn railway Since approx. 1,000 BC, the "white gold" has been exported from the Salzkammergut region. As a location for trading, Linz has always been at the centre. Today, Linz's harbour is a logistics centre of international significance. Almost 1,200 ships call at both the commercial and tanker ports every year. The Linz shipyard About 1,500 vessels for inland waterways have left the company since the Linz shipyard was founded in 1840. The newest generations of energy-efficient ships make the "green" Danube waterway even more attractive. Navi-

The Danube provides hydroelectric power, and around 40% of the raw materials are delivered sustainably on the river, by ship. voestalpine Stahlwelt 2014 therefore dedicates an individual show to

the "steelworks on the river". Highlight: A 30 metre, interactive panorama that offers insights into the river and the surrounding environment. www.voestalpine.com/stahlwelt Top performance worldwide Relative to the population, the city certainly has the most global market leaders. There is hardly a railway line in the world that could manage without technology from Linz, super sports cars move with gear components from Linz, and the newest generation of synthetic materials makes our world easier – in almost all branches of industry, there is a strong piece of innovative Linz strength.

MEETINGS IN LINZ Meetings with a deeper meaning As a venue for meetings, Linz is the ideal starting point for something new, with its unique spirit and central location: Here, the places for reflection have atmosphere – and a range of possibilities to offer event participants meaningful fringe events. Passion for the future is infectious – let yourself be inspired!

Design Center – 20 years of emotion The Linz Design Center, location for meetings and events, is celebrating its 20th birthday in January 2014. The multifunctional building of international standing is hugely valued and used by organisers of congresses and meetings. Above all, the unique glass roof inspires both organisers and visitors, and daylight creates a pleasant atmosphere.

voestalpine and the Danube are closely connected. Water is of great significance in our production process, and at the same time, it's a valuable transport route. The sustainable use of the river is of vital importance for our steelworks, and for that reason we do everything to protect it comprehensively, in every respect. That's why voestalpine Stahlwelt is also giving special insights into the 'steelworks on the river' next year."

The Danube bend known as the Schlögener Schlinge is the highlight of the landscape in the upper Danube Valley. The main artery of the country At the end of the First World War, the Habsburgs, once the most important family in Europe, lost their power after 650 years of uninterrupted reign, and Austria shrunk from a world empire with major ports on the Adriatic to a small republic. But the Danube remained the main

From Rome to the Third Reich The Danube is also a river of destiny. The Imperium Romanum reached to its banks, which the Romans developed as the Danube limes, a border defence for protection from the Teutons. The ancient Romans brought civilisation to Austria, and 50 years after the conquest of the kingdom of Noricum, they founded the fortress Lentia, now Linz. Napoleon laid siege to Linz in 1809 after the Battle of Ebelsberg, and shipped his troops to Urfahr, the northern part of Linz. In recent history, the Danube

The Danube-Vltava region Nature and the landscape, in particular, attract many visitors to the region between the two rivers, which lies in the border-triangle Germany-Austria-Czech Republic. Just 70 kilometres away from Linz is the small, picturesque town of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic – with the country's second largest castle, the Egon Schiele Centrum, and the medieval, historical town centre – a rewarding UNESCO World Heritage destination. www.ckrumlov.info

You have a tale to tell ...

Donausteig: In total, 40 excursion routes branch off from the hiking trail, and lead deeper into the world of the Upper Austrian Danube.

Discover Upper Austria. Linz is the ideal starting point for an expedition through the beauty of the whole province.

Unique landscape of lakes The Salzkammergut, with its unique mountains and lakes, is dominated by majestic "King Dachstein". At almost 3,000 metres, it is Upper Austria's highest mountain, and also marks the southern border of the province. However, the Salzkam-

mergut is also known as a traditional place to spend the summer – and the magnificent landscape of lakes, with Traunsee, Attersee, Mondsee, and Wolfgangsee ensure impressive spectacles of nature in every season. And some of the towns have everything to make your journey a real experience: Gmunden on Traunsee, against the backdrop of the steep, towering Traunstein, invites you to visit the Gmundner Keramik pottery factory, in Mondsee the beautiful castle with adjoining hotel is just asking to be visited, and St. Wolfgang is waiting for you with one of the country's most atmospheric

Christmas markets. You're also in the right place in the Salzkammergut if you have sporting ambitions: The Freesports Arena Krippenstein in Obertraun, for example, is the location for high-alpine winter sports at more than 2,000 metres above sea level. www.salzkammergut.at Extensive forests in the south-east The Pyhrn-Priel region is known as a year-round destination: Located in the south-east of Upper Austria, the holiday region borders directly on the Kalkalpen National Park. of the foothills of the Sengsengebirge and the Reichraminger Hintergebirge are covered with thick, almost virgin, mixed forests. Numerous streams, wild and romantic waterfalls, and also the valleys of the Enns and the Steyr leading northwards shape this area, which is an undisturbed refuge for many rare plants and animals. The Pyhrn-Priel region also offers a ski resort: The Hutterer Höss in Hinterstoder lies at 2,000 metres above sea level. www.urlaubsregion-pyhrn-priel.at Mighty River Back to the great river that shapes Linz and the country: The fasci-

nating Danube landscape is also a prime example of biodiversity in nature – to be explored on the Donausteig, opened in 2010. The route leads from Passau to Grein via the provincial capital of Linz. Hikers experience various landscape forms here. Between Passau and Aschach, the river is surrounded by forested hills. In this section is also the famous Schlögener Schlinge, in which the Danube alters its direction of flow twice. This is followed by the Eferding Basin and the provincial capital of Linz, and finally by the Strudengau region. www.donausteig.at

UNESCO World Heritage In and around Upper Austria, there are several significant places described as World Heritage Sites, which are wonderful destinations in the region. For example, the Dachstein/ Salzkammergut region has ancient culture and settlement traditions in breathtaking nature, stilt houses at Attersee and Mondsee, and idyllic Hallstatt, which was already settled by people 7,000 years ago, and which houses the oldest salt mine in the world. After all, the Salzkammergut owes its name to the "white gold".
