EARTH GESTURES
EARTH GESTURES The exhibition Earth Gestures features the work of ceramicist Dr Pippin Drysdale and painter /printmaker Dr Yvonne Rees-Pagh. Earth Gestures brings together the raw, tactile permanence of ceramics with the vibrant, expressive fluidity of painting. This exhibition explores the dialogue between two-dimensional space and three-dimensional form, revealing how both mediums capture memory, emotion, and visions of landscape. The ceramic works—ranging from sculptural forms to delicately glazed vessels serve as anchors of weight and presence. They celebrate the origins of the medium, demonstrating how soft clay is transformed by heat and glaze into enduring objects. In contrast, the paintings use color, texture, and sweeping brushwork to translate internal landscapes and the subconscious onto canvas. The works invite the viewer to contemplate the dynamic dance between materiality and the artist’s hand Together, the two mediums create a compelling visual tension. The paintings provide a backdrop of motion and atmosphere, while the ceramics ground the space with physical mass. Through shared themes of color, form, and texture, the exhibiting artists invite viewers to consider the relationship between the objects we hold and the environments we inhabit. Earth Gestures is an immersive celebration of materiality and the enduring power of creative expression.

‘Gantheaume Point, Broome Installation 2025, is an artwork of overlapping stories. With roots in Broome’s history, it draws inspiration from the pristine beaches, ancient dinosaur footprints, the dramatic pindan cliffs and the pearling industry, where Aboriginal, Chinese, Malay, Japanese, European and Filipino cultures combined to create the pearling capital of the world in the last century. The installation comprises fourteen porcelain vessels and marbles, of varying dimensions, that radiate a quiet assurance, a play of the subtle and the dramatic that encapsulate the beauty of the red cliffs, indigo ocean and azure sea grasses of the Broome coastline. Drysdale’s porcelain artworks are all about colour, whether subtle and soft or vibrant with contrast. Inspired by fleeting moments of memory, with a vision that is emotional and intuitive, the resulting colours and surfaces are produced in a complex, highly crafted process. ‘Gantheaume Point, Broome Installation 2025’ simultaneously invites the viewer to consider the future, the impacts of continued mining and fishing expansion on the environment and the cultural heritage of the First Nations peoples, and to ensure the preservation of these fragile assets. Undaunted by the passing decades, Pippin Drysdale meets new challenges head on, ensuring her continued venerable status.
