EDITOR'S LETTER Isolation is an amorphous contradiction that cannot be wholly defined or rectified. Slumping behind our screens, we witness billionaires launching into the great unknown. Import and export have assumed a state of catatonia. At the same time, people's global movements are more magnified than ever, jeopardized in some cases. Lint has chosen works from artists that observe isolation in their practice. In the short story Turtle Soup, Nada Akl, with unwavering wittiness, walks us through the tragicomedy of her poignant yet brazen dialogue with a therapist. Photographs by Marko Stojanović serve as a reminder that isolation is a political chess game, a tool to categorize what is us and them within multiple social spheres and political arenas. What follows is a deliberation on collective and individual experiences. However relatable, however unusual.

I studien Plasticenta: First evidence of microplastics in human placenta hittade forskare microplast i moderkakan hos fyra av sex gravida kvinnor som deltog i studien. Forskningsledaren Antonio Ragusa sa: ”It is like having a cyborg baby: no longer composed only of human cells, but a mixture of biological and inorganic entities”.

I paint. Whenever I have room to paint, I paint. I don’t have room to paint. And so I don’t.
I call my grandmother on Facetime. She says: – Some days I wake up and I think to myself, why should I even get out of bed? But then I get up and I take care of my garden or do a crossword puzzle.
69
I think about the place where I grew up. I think about the forest there. I think about the trees. I think about how we used to swim in the lakes there. The one I love comes from the city by the sea. Lakes scare him. My childhood is with the forest and my love is by the sea.
The one I love says: – Why don’t you start playing Wordfeud with your grandparents, as a way to have daily contact with them? And so I do. We chat on Wordfeud and sometimes I call my grandmother to help me with sewing, or my other grandmother to help me with crossword puzzles.
I go for a walk in the park near here. I go to the duck pond. I watch the ducks there. They make me calm, usually. Two gulls are chasing them over the water. The ducks, there are so many of them, they swim in circles and try to avoid the male gull who is attacking them with its beak. A duck is injured. The gulls see it. It tries to hide behind a bush. I go closer but I can’t see. The gulls are there now, there is a male and a female, they flew there. A magpie too, it stays close, as if it’s waiting for something. I lean forward but I’m still too far away. I squint my eyes. I see the female gull rip a piece of bright red flesh from the injured duck. They’re tearing it apart. They’re eating it alive.
I call the people who helped take care of me when I was a child. I ask them about their lives. I record it as they smile to me on Zoom and tell me about their childhood in a time far from now. Sometimes they drink beer or coffee. Sometimes the connection is bad and they have to move. Sometimes they say things like: – Oh my, in this light, all my wrinkles show.
Every day I get the newspaper through the mail slot in my front door. It’s an actual newspaper, it’s paper. I do the crossword puzzle there with the one I love. We take time. We lay in bed. We stay there.
The one I love looks for jobs. I buy a bottle of red wine. I buy two bottles.
We say: Let’s go to the island. And so we go to the island.
The island is as quiet as dusk. It looks like dawn, as if always embraced by it. It’s calm, as if all worries have scattered and been crushed against the cliffs that are purple with heather. Or, maybe they linger slowly and then float as cigarette smoke towards the sky. There are no stores or shops on the island. No cars. No traffic lights. No restaurants. There are many butterflies and apple trees and insects. There is a small harbor, and a football field covered with dandelions. We do crossword puzzles and drink coffee on the patio. My love smokes a cigarette behind his black Ray-Bans. His dark hair is messy and he is pale and beautiful. His friend and I play darts by the side of the house. All of us swim from a cliff, we jump there, straight into the water. It’s by the harbor and two boys are bouncing off the diving board. In the evening we cook dinner and play board games and drink wine. – Yesterday we drank our body weight in wine, the friend says often.
I’m afraid of the jellyfish. I have read about a new kind, tiny and almost invisible, dangerous, and only living in these waters. We lay down on the granite. It’s pink and I have learned how it feels when I touch it. It’s rough and sometimes smooth on the tip of my fingers. It’s just me and the one I love here now. There are no houses on this side of the island. Just the ocean, resting glossy and smooth against the sharp cliffs. We walk on clams to get to the water. They are small and packed together. It feels like walking on rubber. – Won’t we hurt them? – No, he says. He takes my hand and leads me to the water that is lucid. The algae flows with the waves that glide towards the shore. We are naked and the sea unfolds in front of us as the night sky would.
The starfish. I squat and watch them through the water. They’re light pink or purple like toys and they are scattered over the clams. Sometimes they move a bit. Slowly, wearily. – It’s as if we’re alone in this world, I say. My love hums, almost sleeping. He lays on his back with a straw hat over his face. His hand is stretched towards me and touches my skin lightly. My lower back, my thigh. On the other side of the bay, a wall of striped granite dives into the shiny blue. Far away a motor boat reminds us that there is still a world around us, somewhere. Beneath the water surface the clams glitter, and the water is irresistibly smooth.

In my mellow mansion,
alone
but trying not to be lonely.
Time, I’ve had plenty of it. It’s like there is an alternative, co-existing universe out there, outside of my apartment. There is life, occasions, plans, although I’m not part of it, or them. When I step back inside again, everything becomes very still. It’s difficult to explain but imagine visiting an older relative whose place time has stranded to a previous year, a decade even. The air is heavy, you start to get drowsy. The atmosphere is waiting, hopeful for something to happen, someone to visit.

Unanswered Prayers
The Humanitarian Crisis of the Missing in Lebanon Living in isolation has been a prolonged hereditary factor in some parts of our world. In Lebanon, thousands of citizens live in prolonged isolation, waiting for their family members to come back home. They haven’t heard from their loved ones for years; they still did not receive their corpses or at least some of their remains. Families yearn for the fate of their loved ones to be revealed to them, even if it means hope for their return is lost. The circumstances have left their homes veiled in sadness and uncertainty; their solitude stands firm. Since the civil war, photographs of detained family members have covered the cold walls of their homes as they wait for their return. The Lebanese authorities have failed in their duty towards their citizens, as brothers, sons, fiancés, husbands, friends, uncles, and fathers have been missing in Syrian jails. To every heart beating in solitude, aching for a loved one’s return.
