The beginning of last month saw the alignment of both the Ethiopian Orthodox’s lent period, as well as the holy month of Ramadan, come to an end. As one would guess, this paved the way for even more events that celebrated the completion of two lengthy and challenging fast seasons. May was a month of holidays and occasions starting from Laborers’) day to Mothers’ day and much more, festivities were at every corner. It is also wedding season in case you haven’t noticed!

With so many events taking place it was hard to choose what to cover and leave out, yet we tried our best. This issue samples some among the myriad of diverse events held this month. Concerts, exhibitions, shows, bazaars, champions’ league final game screenings, you name it, May had it all. This is a good omen of an action-packed summer despite how unpredictable things are.

We have tried to bring you the best of what Addis had to offer this month, including an exclusive up-close interview with an Ethiopian fashion pioneer. With all the event coverage, reviews, suggestions, and messages at your convenience, we hope you have a good read.

Zoya Another round of Zoya took place on the Saturday night of May 15. This edition of Zoya did not disappoint, on par with its previously set high reputation. The night was a blast. The place was beautiful; the venue – Greek Club – was complementary to the vibe almost by design. House music permeated the night as the participants danced away to the epic performances of Zeiha, aiR-wan, Lady Hash, ARMAGHEDION, and Chill Akilas.

Atgebam Alugn On the same day (Saturday, May 15), Urban Events hosted this month’s most anticipated concert: Atgebam Alugn. Held at Fana Park, it featured big-time musicians. The head performance - the musician most of the participants were excited to see – was Lij Michael. But the concert also had other musicians such as Abdu Kiar, Teamir Gizaw, Yohana, and Tariku (the musician responsible for the current sensation sweeping across the mainstream musical scene: Dishta Gina). Although Lij Michael's performance was expected to last the longest, it seemed as if it was Abdu Kiar headlining the concert. He spent most of the night performing his all-time classics, which turned out to be for the best because the crowd truly enjoyed it.

Tech-a-Chill At Umoja House – a hidden relaxing bar/restaurant – LinkUp hosted an open-air techno music party.

It delivered what it promised: all flavors of Afro music by Benaiah, ARMAGHEDION and Lady Hash, Tribal House by DRØMMER, and Deep Tech by aiR-wan. Also featuring exquisite food along with a myriad of cocktails, the night was a great party in all sense of the word. For those that wanted competitions, darts and beer pong were available. It was an event that was titled far more perfectly than anyone anticipated – a night to unwind, to breathe away the stress of the week, and, of course, to “dance like a giraffe”.

Champions’s league final screening Heineken pulled off another grand UEFA champions' league final screening event at Hilton hotel.

A well-organized occasion made more enjoyable thanks to the captivating game. Free beer and a dinner buffet alongside indoor and outdoor screenings gave the crowd mobility. Support seemed split down the middle, and both contestants received serious fan support although Man City fans resorted to silence near the end. Heineken hosts such screenings annually. These events exemplify the power of sports to bring together all kinds of people in the name of having a good time.

all it The Investment Misalign (for a lack of a better term) where investors and fund-seekers (both unaware of each other's presence) complain about the other's presumed absence. It is a common issue I often observe in the economic context, but it also spills over to the creative sector in Ethiopia.

So much unrealized talent, so much unfulfilled potential for too long; it is devastating to witness. The resources needed to fuel and sustain creativity seem to be in the hands of a few.

The ability and energy to create seem to be possessed by a rare few. While both sides are eager to contribute, one comes off as inaccessible while the other becomes hard to discover. Such a disconnection needs urgent solutions to bridge the gap between talent and enablers, patron and benefactor. On a larger scale, this means a close partnership between the public and private sector too.

I was casually posting stories on my Instagram at the launch event of Creative Hub. My first few posts had me showing off my press badge and government

officials giving speeches, which admittedly, are of little interest to most. As soon as I started posting videos of the workspaces, boom!!!

EVERYONE was curious. The 3D printers especially grabbed the attention of my meager following.

Indeed, I can understand why as I was fascinated myself. I am not sure if it was the enticing movement of the gears or the promise of a bright future (3D printed human beings, hello). The entire space had a feel to it that filled one with inspiration, hence the name Creative Hub I guess.

Creative Hub is a co-working space that offers a modern, state-of-the-art working environment. Creative Hub primarily caters to professionals in leather, textile, ICT, fashion, industrial, and product design.

It is a collaboration between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Federal Small and Medium Manufacturing Industries Promotion Authority (FeSMMIPA), funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation.

Although initiated by the

institutions listed prior, Creative Hub will be brought to life executed by two of my favorite organizations in Addis – ICE Addis and African Mosaique. ICE Addis is celebrating its 10th year of being involved in the Ethiopian Tech Startup sector.

African Mosaique is currently one of the leading fashion startup incubators in the country.

The involvement of these two organizations in Creative Hub makes the whole undertaking much more practical. Knowing this subsides my fear of the project being just another government and development NGO effort.

The launch event itself was a sort of testament to this. The morning event, mainly held for government officials and officials from the NGOs, was the same old procession line-up. The formality underlying these inaugurations creates an atmosphere that I find uncomfortable. The speeches from the development partners were the same old, “this is a great opportunity for sustainable development that is inclusive of the youth in the country” this, and “an ode to public-private partnership” that.

The government officials repeated all this with even more pleas such as - poverty is the true enemy.

Trade and Industry Minister Melaku Alebel fervently reminded us Ethiopia is the land of human origin, as Dr. Hirut Kassaw, Culture, and Sports Minister, confirmed.

The morning event took place behind Creative Hub’s main offices in a conference hall that resembled ‘Kebele’ meeting halls.

The afternoon event was held at the hub's main offices. This time there were 50 entrepreneurs and businesses that made it into the pool of the first beneficiaries of the hub that caught my attention. They all seemed young, wide-eyed, driven, and eager to implement their ideas.

Speaking of the afternoon event, I cannot pass without showing my appreciation for the obscure band that performed for the attendees. The band is called ‘8 guday le rub’ (loosely translates to ‘8 minutes till quarter’). I already loved them from the name. I’m not even much into band music, but I enjoyed myself the whole time.

They were the perfect band for Creative Hub as they shared what made the hub so exciting; progress and the hope of the future and the youth.

of the space itself. Without fail, all proceeded to give answers along the lines of describing what they did. They also touched on the challenges they faced, the appreciation they have for their other partners, and so on.

But I digress. While the level of government and development NGOs irks me, I am willing to admit that the funding and visibility that they bring might be worth any downsides. The involvement of ICE Addis and African Mosaique and what I saw from the 50 participants was a promising sign. The possibilities presented by such inclusive spaces are boundless when resources are mobilized responsibly and ethically. It gives me hope that the implementation of Creative Hub will be something to watch out for within the coming months.

Yenegew Bazaar Nathan Seyoum

t is a long walk from the entrance at Hyatt Regency to Metro. In between, you stumble across a cascade of beautiful architecture framed by parallel columns on both sides. To your left is Cascara Coffee and Cocktails; in front, bearing right is the Market where various amenities from the hotel are sold. And just beyond is The Kitchen staring right at you. Turn left to find the stairs. Ushering you in is a welcoming banner to an event lurking below.

Down two flights of stairs, you find yourself at Metro - where Yenegew Bazaar is buzzing. You must understand why.

It is a Sunday, in May. The saxophone seems to pop out from the neo-jazz melodies heard across the Metro, setting the tone

and vibe of the bazaar. ‘Yenegew Bazaar’ literally translates to “The bazaar of tomorrow.” It is a joint effort realized by Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, SNV Ethiopia, ASHENGO Events & Design, and the Addis Ababa Mayor’s Office.

It involves various small and medium enterprises presenting different items that range from bags, recyclable materials, clothes, and even ‘tej’. All vendors were carefully selected for the quality and authenticity of the products they offer.

Entering the bazaar, one will see a bonanza of colors. To the right, upon entering, you first spot a vendor selling ‘tej'; the honey used in the ‘tej’ gives it a sweet taste complemented with the kick of the alcohol. There is plenty to see, explore and shop. From

sandals that feel like clouds on your feet to luscious bags for professional or recreation purposes, from wicker baskets that come in handy as flower placeholders or exquisite gift baskets, to recycled plastic bottles that aim to give back to the environment, the bazaar has it all.

After a few hours of shopping, settle down at the embankment with a drink or two and think about what the future holds for the second installment of this incredible bazaar.

Carnival

The world’s largest party Neway Addisu

S

urprisingly, the origins of Carnival lie in ancient Kemet (Egypt) where it was performed as a celebration to usher out winter and celebrate the coming of spring. Most religions of the past saw the arrival of spring as a good omen and gave it a prominent place in their calendars. It signified a time for new life and greener pastures. Eventually, King Alexander of Macedonia conquered Kemet, and the Greeks, through cultural assimilation, adopted the festival. Rome eventually joined in on the fun too. Later on, the celebration got overlaid with Christian meaning to become the festival of “Carne Vale”.

Carnival, therefore, represented a final period of feasting and celebration before the spiritual rigors of Lent (the 40-day window before Easter). Animal meat was plentiful during this

part of the Christian calendar consumed during Carnival as people abstained from meat consumption during the following liturgical season, Lent.

As Christianity spread across Europe, so too did the celebration of Carnival. Colonization exported it across the globe. First, Portuguese colonists, along with an estimated 4 million slaves, took this celebration to the shores of Brazil. Over time, European rituals fused with African ones to create Brazil’s Carnaval. The extravagant and multicolored so is, in a sense, a celebration of Brazil’s mixed heritage – and it is big business,

attracting millions every year.

Eventually, other colonizing nations spread Christianity along with Carnival to other countries.

In February and March, thousands of people swarm the streets, uniting to celebrate Carnival in cities including Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago's Port of Spain, and El Callao, Venezuela, etc. Though held in various parts of the world, the spirit of Carnival remains the same. Recognized by their vibrantly colored floats and costumes, massive parades, an abundance of food, music, and festivities, Carnival celebrations are truly a spectacle to behold.

In its essence, the carnival is intended to be an expression of freedom.

Brazil - Attracting millions of people, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the largest of all the festivals worldwide. The grand parades include massive floats and costumes designed by its samba schools which usher in the celebrations. During the parades, the samba schools selected for the competition head to the massive stadium Sambódromo (the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí) which

stretches 2,300 feet and can fit 90,000 people. If you attend the carnival in Brazil, you will find out that the participants prefer to wear elaborate costumes designed from scratch. But as a spectator, you can don a casual outfit for the Sambadrome parade but consider including some minor accessories, such as feather masks and beads.

Remember that the weather in Brazil is humid and hot during February.

Trinidad - Carnival was introduced on the Caribbean island of Trinidad by French colonists. Slaves, excluded from these celebrations, partied to the soundtrack of Calypso music, which mocked the French. The spirit of liberation expanded and evolved into the modernday Carnival, now filled with booming soca music.

Spain - Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands—and the liveliest too. The pre-Lenten Carnival celebration is similar to that of Rio de Janeiro, but here it lasts 15 days and is filled with street parties along with its official parades. For days, the streets are filled with locals and visitors witnessing parties,

and satirical performances by entertainment carnival groups.

Their official parade, which happens Tuesday, is called "El Coso". And, as you might have guessed, it is filled with music and dancers with extravagant costumes.

United States - You might also know Carnival by its other name in the United States: Mardi Gras. Celebrations begin on January 6 and end on "Fat Tuesday" (which is February 16 this year). Mardi Gras traditions include grand balls, parades with elaborate floats, and, of course, onlookers wearing the official Mardi Gras colors of purple, gold, and green, vying for beads. Special social clubs called Krewes would organize the weeks of events. Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove

Tuesday, derived from the word shrive - meaning to administer the sacrament of confession to; to absolve.

India - I am as surprised as you are, but it isn’t only the west that celebrates Carnival. In India, it is celebrated in the southern state of Goa, once a Portuguese colony.

Though significantly smaller than the well-known Rio Carnival or the Portuguese Carnival of Madeira, the Goa Carnival is the largest in India and one of the few traditional celebrations of the Catholic holiday in Asia. Despite falling into obscurity during the latter days of the Portuguese colonial rule of Goa, the Goa Carnival was resurrected as a minor street celebration in 1965 and has since turned into a major tourist attraction for the small state.

From samba blocos in Brazil to masked balls in Italy, Carnival is a truly global phenomenon – celebrated in 50 countries around the globe; although

the festival in Brazil, being the largest, is the most well-known.

Inclusiveness and diversity are at the core of carnivals. From their very origins, they emerged as celebrations for all: the rich and the poor; women and men; the religious and the non-believers.

Today, carnivals make all attendees equal, blurring racial, social, and gender barriers.

Beyond the sequins, the music, and invaluable tradition, carnivals are an expression of the enormous potential of the creative industries, an ecosystem that produces revenues of over US$124 billion a year in Latin America and the Caribbean alone. Some of these celebrations, such as the Carnival of Barranquilla, have already been recognized by UNESCO. The Intangible Cultural Heritage category, a recognition garnered by a history dating back to the 19th and its standing as the second-largest carnival in the world. I tried to highlight Carnivals that occur in different

countries, but I cannot mention all since there are over 50 of them. I just wanted people to know of the complex layer of human stories that added up to form the celebration known as Carnival. So next time you use the word, look back and reflect on all its underlying meaning and grandeur. Sadly, due to COVID-19, many of the top destinations, including the above regions, have canceled Carnival. Some are, however, hosting virtual celebrations— and of course, dancing at home is always encouraged.

omewhere in old Addis closed off from main routes this lush and quiet part of town offers all the privacy and seclusion in the world. It might be hard to locate the place if you are new to the area, but Sandford school is a known landmark.

Koba is the first artisanal patisserie in Addis. The origins lie in the reputable restaurant and café – Romina. Romina expanded throughout the city, along with its menu items, soon came the need to specialize in pastries and baked goods.

The first thing that leaves a striking impression is the interior and atmosphere, characteristic of its creative and functional use of space. Spacious and well-lit thanks

to the ceiling-high front windows aided by the hanging orange downlights encased in glass spheres.

The indoor area is well airconditioned and has a tranquil atmosphere with ambient Bossa Nova songs on end. The cool air often blows in the sweet smell of fresh baked goods that already open up the appetite.

Eggs Benedict is a specialty of the house you can spot on a few tables at a time. It is a delicate dish with components that each require meticulous execution. Eggs Benedict has muffin halves as a base on which rest bacon strips, and poached eggs topped by Hollandaise sauce. That is as elementary as it can be, and Koba’s take on the classic did not let down.

that oozes out when sliced through rounded off by the rich Hollandaise & cream cheese on top. What a bite. So rich, eggy, and filling, yet I could not get enough.

There are optional sides for this dish, and this time I went for the side veggies. Some sautéed zucchini, eggplant & bell peppers flavors melded together very well.

I disregard sides since they are often sources of disappointment, but glad I tried the veggies with bitter rich avocado slices.

Following was the Greek salad, a fresh light bowl of many contrasting and complementary colors, textures, and flavors. Fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, soft and crumbly feta cheese, sweet corn kernels, crunchy onions & bell peppers, fruity black olives, parsley & olive oil. How much more can one say about a salad? I cannot continue without emphasizing just how well put together and beautifully presented this salad was.

The Nile Perch teriyaki sandwich served in an intimidating portion size followed next. I was short for words when I took my first bite, I knew what I was dealing with was not your average sandwich. Rarely do I come across a decent sandwich in Addis so this relieved my itch.

Bread is one of the crucial pillars of

a great sandwich, and guess what bread was used here. Ciabatta is a type of Italian bread with a high hydration ratio that gives it the characteristic bubbles it is known for. Koba sells large Ciabatta loaves, but they also use it for this sandwich.

Within the soft airy buns is a fillet of flaky pan-fried Nile Perch fish smothered with savory Teriyaki sauce. As if that isn’t appetizing on its own, the creamy sauce, toasted sesame seeds, and crunchy rucola (arugula leaves) did the job.

The nuttiness of the arugula is brought out by the sesame seeds.

Such a good pair, tasting this combination put a smile on my face.

The white peach cheesecake was a good example of the intricacy with which the pastry is made here. It is a combination of varying textures that are pastries on their own. The salty cookie base beneath the soft jiggly cheesecake caught me by surprise. It works so well thanks to its sharp kick amidst all the creamy components. Did I mention the snappy tempered chocolate and whip cream?

Another house specialty is a world-renowned classic invented centuries ago by Portuguese monks in monasteries. Pastéis de Nata (better known as Portuguese custard tarts) are another delicacy Koba takes pride in.

These tarts are buttery rich flaky layered pastry with a creamy custard filling blistered by the scorching oven heat when baking. Such contrasting features are what make Portuguese custard tarts satiating yet borderline addictive. It is almost impossible to stop at one, I must warn you.

Certain establishments set the standards higher in any given industry; especially when it comes to service, there are always fine margins for constant improvement. Minor improvements and subtle changes backed by consistency go a long way. It starts with the love and dedication Portuguese chef Candido Santos and his team put into each dish. Candido Santos is an executive pastry chef

with demonstrated working experience in the hospitality industry spanning over 30 years.

His exposure to cuisines, practices, and food cultures from around the world have shaped Santos’ view on food and pastry.

Santos believes that each corner of the world has something to interest someone - be it a wellpreserved recipe or a cooking technique. That is his mission at Koba – giving everyone a taste of the world and serving happiness on a plate.

Were you always into fashion or did modeling create that interest?

My passion for making and creating things led me to model. I had been sketching since elementary school, and I knew I wanted to be a designer since grade 7. I was always involved throughout high school, even organizing fashion shows for school programs. So, I used modeling early in my career to gain much-needed knowledge about the fashion industry, especially here in Ethiopia. In my short-lived modeling carrier, I made crucial connections that would enable my fashion design ambitions.

My mother was a skilled dressmaker, and I was the youngest of five. She would make dresses for my sister and me to decorate our house with beautiful handmade carpets, table clothes even wall hangings. She was a “housewife” as the society labeled women working from their houses, but she was always taking work orders selling clothes and home accessories to support her children. I think I inherited the love of craftsmanship from her. Although inspired by her use of traditional materials and techniques, my ideas are different from hers. I have learned from her creativity, her dedication, hard work using those as the foundation of a more modern expression.

Does your work have any commonality with the clothes your mother used to make?

Do you think fashion qualifies as an art form, like sculpting, painting, or music?

Art is another form of expressing yourself or bringing forth an issue or a reinvented idea or thought like fashion is. Art is not so much about what you wear, although it can be.

Not just anything can be art; I think it must be something you have made or at least created in some way or another to get your point across if there is one.

So not all fashion is art. Some fashion is utilitarian or manufactured as a utility product. Yet there is an art to combining even those utilitarian

fashion objects to express something greater. Fashionwear intently designed for expression or beauty rather than simple use is art. Designers use a creative process to create fashion objects, the result is something expressive that people wear for the message it conveys about them. Fashion is a powerful artistic social medium.

Do you prefer provocative fashion or mainstream fashion?

A lot of fashion trends were considered provocative upon introduction. What was provocative could not get enough mass approval, or was not "mainstream". I think the word mainstream could mean anything commercial, widely acceptable, or popular. It’s a matter of personal choice. I choose not to follow trends; I prefer creating smaller, more unique collections.

Do you think the fashion industry is progressive in its own right? Or is it more or less similar to others in its treatment of the people who contribute to it?

I think the fashion industry overall is very progressive. It is still growing and creating opportunities for many. It is an ecosystem of creatives such as designers, models, photographers & videographers, make-up artists, behind-the-scenes tech support.

Its collaborative nature makes it exciting. However, problems arise when business owners are more interested in profits. If profits come before workers' treatment, then there will be exploitation. This is the story of 3rd world countries the fast fashion industry resorts to for cheaper manual labor.

What country or culture is your favorite in terms of traditional fashion?

Well, Ethiopia of course! But I also love so many others, here on the continent of Africa, in Asia and the Middle East, so many I cannot list all…

Which exhibition of yours do you view as the best?

The last one I did, The GTB Fashion Week 2019 in Lagos, Nigeria was a favorite because it was here on the continent. My first time in Nigeria, there were so many talented designers from all over West Africa, (Nigeria, Ghana, etc).

So many new connections, it was so well organized. Never have I seen anything on that scale in Africa before! Even the crowd, the spectators all came dressed up as part of the event. Ethiopia is very conservative, and it was so liberating to get exposed to new perspectives.

Which of your sets are your favorite designs?

I don’t have a favorite set or collection. I’m usually most excited and interested in the collection I’m working on presently. Once that’s done I’m moving on to the next!

They’re all beautiful in various seasons and inspirational in different ways.

As far as traditional Ethiopian styles, I usually try to utilize the various regional patterns to minimal extents.

I found that highlighting these traditional touches via a uniquely modern approach is our brand’s signature.

You also have musical talent… is that something you plan on pursuing in the future?

No! You never know, but at this moment, no. I have always combined fashion and music since early in my career, first as a hip-hop artist because I saw the need for more fashion choices in that area.

I continue to be involved with the music played at our fashion events.

I also love dressing musicians for performances and music videos.

Considering these reasons, I intend to remain connected to music in that way.

There is a perception, especially in our culture, that fashion and entertainment contribute nothing substantial to society. What would you say to those people?

When I first began, I was excited about just designing my original designs and promoting Ethiopian culture. I was interested in working closely with the traditional weavers and seeing their struggles and hardships. Such inquiries entailed understanding their situation, the difficulties they have to overcome daily, such as child-care, etc,...

In the beginning, I was getting my inspiration from traditional Ethiopian attires, historical places, different ethnic groups and tell their stories through my collections.

Through time my source of inspiration expands and it comes from different directions. From a historical place somewhere in Africa to a piece of art in Berlin or any type of music and its culture, inspiration comes from all directions. Sometimes I just start drawing or draping a piece of fabric, and I wonder where it is going.

For me there is no formula for my source of inspiration as long as it can translate to my craft and stay aligned with my belief and culture.

I also have a passion for music, art, and photography; I want to focus on that direction and combine different art forms with fashion.

In the 10 years since MAFI MAFI’s inception what challenges in the Ethiopian fashion industry have you seen get better? Which challenges remain?

Despite still being limited by infrastructural challenges such as power supply, a lack of adequate fashion training and educational facilities, and financial aid and support from our government, the industry is still growing

slowly but surely. We are seeing a change in the mindset of the Ethiopian fashion consumer. It is encouraging and impactful in my view, yet there is still a lot to be done and we need more locally made fashion retailers. I believe there is greater opportunity for growth within our textile and manufacturing industries if we look more inwards. We need to understand that fashion is a huge business; it requires the right talent, knowledge, and financial backing.

We need to grow the local fashion industry and control our narrative and its ramifications. Investors, both within our country and the continent need to see the opportunities and power that the fashion business presents and invest in local brands. I always say this and I will repeat it. If we want to see the fashion industry grow, we need to nurture and believe in local talent and resources. We have a massive power to create our African brands and become influential globally.

What are you doing in your brand, and what can we expect from you in the future?

I started the brand when I was very young like the industry was a few years back in Ethiopia. It’s

been a crazy road with a lot of ups and downs worth fighting for. I am so happy to see where we are now. Even if it seems impossible at times, it isn't so, it just takes years of hard work and persistence. I strongly believe in a more value-conscious industry. As a brand, we continue to work to maintain high ethical standards regarding wages, the working conditions of our staff, and our supply chain. Within the parameters of our enablement, we push for and work towards more sustainable means of production such as using handwoven fabrics, repurposing, and up-cycling waste. Our vision is to create ethically made, beautiful clothes. Through this, we aspire to change the approach and mindset of the world to African fashion and will continue to do so!

We sat to sample some of their cocktails and finger foods and the first dish I tried was Raw salmon rolled with Injera and topped with roe. It was probably a bad idea that I had this first because it is one of the best things I have tasted in my life. I knew nothing that came after that could compare. The saltiness of the roe combined with the bitterness of the Injera lends the buttery salmon so much flavor that everyone at our table experienced sensory overload. This is a dish that I could never grow weary of.

After devouring that, I figured it would be best to have a drink and let my taste buds calm down after the show they got. I got the Pineapple Cosmopolitan which was mildly acidic, fresh, tangy, and distinctly tropical.

The spirits play their part giving the subtle kick to it. Next, I had a Strawberry margarita – made

using fresh strawberries. The pulp of the blended strawberries absorbs the alcohol, softening the sting of the tequila. The right proportions are what make it a perfectly balanced take on the classic cocktail.

As I felt I was getting carried away with the cocktails, we opted to get another platter of finger food. Next on the menu was an eggplant puree served on lettuce and bread. The eggplant contrasts with the acidic lettuce; the perfectly toasted bread adds the crunchy texture needed to make this dish complete.

Blue Hawaii- the tiki staple cocktail is something I have wanted to try for a while. It is reminiscent of the Polynesian/ Caribbean beach vibes. It looks like a sparkling azure lake on a clear sunny afternoon. Blue Hawaii is a drink designed to make you feel like it is summer no matter where you are or what the weather. Not only does it taste like

the tropics, but it also looks like it. Sometimes that is just what you need from a cocktail.

My overall experience at the Kilimanjaro Lounge was something I did not know I needed. The atmosphere recalibrated my mood and the cocktails finished the job.

While nursing my last cocktail I was informed that the lounge hosted Whiskey Nights, weekly on Thursday. So, with a smile on my face, knowing that I would return, I walked out. This was the perfect goodbye to a place I could not leave, evidence of my attachment issues.

Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. As you can surmise from the synopsis, this film combines two disparate genres: a zombie survival movie, and a stylish bank heist. And you get exactly that, nothing very original or surprising but at least it’s a fun ride.

With Zack Snyder being the writer, director, and cinematographer, I saw this film with the bare minimum expectations. But I got a film way more enjoyable than I expected. It’s funny, the action is thrilling, the cast is pretty good. But this film does suffer from Snyder’s habit of self-indulgence. It is way longer than it should be. The cinematography uses an unnecessarily shallow depth of field for most scenes, which can be very distracting. As it has become the norm for any movie that makes a profit, they’re going to expand this to a cinematic franchise with a prequel, and comic book already in the works. But all in all, an enjoyable film I would recommend a fan of zombie movies.

Invincible revolves around Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old boy whose father is Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero in the world, and his transformation into a superhero under the guidance of his father. Invincible is based on a comic book of the same name I had never heard of before seeing the show. But I’m surprised this wasn’t adapted sooner because it’s fantastic.

Very much like The Boys, this seems like a satire or parody of superhero films at first. With characters modeled after well-known superheroes like Superman and Batman, this at first felt like an uninspired show trying to cash in on the popularity of the genre. But Invincible carves out a unique identity for itself pretty quickly. It is part coming-of-age high school drama, part a super-violent superhero story, and part family drama. And the voice acting is top-notch with a perfect cast. Much like The Boys, it has surpassed the actual superhero films it was inspired by in quality (Specifically the DCEU). I highly recommend this show.

The series follows the adventures of slacker Philip J. Fry, who is cryogenically preserved for 1000 years and is revived in the 31st century.

Fry finds work at an interplanetary delivery company, working alongside the one-eyed Leela and robot Bender. Despite having been around for a while (premiering in 1991), I haven't met anybody who had seen Futurama. I started watching it recently and I’m only in the second season, but I already love this show. Since Futurama was created by the writer behind The Simpsons, I expected general commonalities, only funnier and more creative. Unlike The Simpsons, Futurama has only 7 seasons because it’s more thought out and clever. The jokes mostly are a satire on what the future could be like based on our current society. The show is in the same vein as Rick and Morty as an “intelligent cartoon” aimed at people who are interested in science, philosophy, so on. So, if you’re a fan of Rick and Morty, as I know most people are, this is the perfect show to pass the time until season 5 comes out. In some ways, it’s even better.

Mandasi Donuts, Malawi With an average temperature of about 26 degrees Celsius, Malawi is not, in any way, a land of extremes. In its essence, it is composed of baked rice with a tomato and chili-based sauce served with beef, chicken, fish, or goat meat on the side. Kitfo, Ethiopia No matter who you are or where you are from, there is a probability that you will love this dish. It is so packed with flavor and satisfaction that no culture or border would deny it in any form. Kitfo is a dish served in different ways where the beef comes raw, cooked lightly, or well-done. One can expect a side of salty cottage cheese and seasoned Collard greens (Gomen). Kitfo is eaten using either a spoon or the traditionally served “Kocho” - a thick flatbread made with fermented false banana flour. Optionally, a side of “Injera” (a staple of Habesha Cuisine popular throughout Ethiopia) is served. Kitfo is a dish Ethiopians take pride in, and when done right, it will satisfy your taste buds and your soul.

Yassa, Senegal This Senegalese dish is regarded as Senegal’s national food and one of the best meals to have in West Africa. This palatable dish is the perfect balance of sweet and sour. The chicken marinates in Lemon, vinegar, and onions. Yassa is served along with a side of fluffy sweet rice, often infused with brown sugar. The dish is traditionally served on decorated plates to feed both the eyes and the soul. Senegalese people love and treasure their national dish, they welcome you to give it a try.

Boerewors, South Africa Affectionately named after the farmers or “BOER” of South Africa, this take on the classic sausage brings forth a circular shape instead of a slight curve like most sausages. And while that aspect makes it stand out among other sausages we know, the way it is served is what truly makes it a special African dish. The sausages are usually barbecued on a grill and served with a very spicy sauce to balance the fatty flavors that come from the sausage and is often made into a hot dog with an extra garnish of grilled tomatoes and onions as well as some large salty fries. It is a dish of multiple flavors containing spice, salt and, sweet in one exciting bite and is, therefore a worth a try in South Africa.

What is Afro House?

f you have been to an electronic music event in Addis throughout the last couple of years, you will have noticed that a new pulsating sound has taken the city by storm. What is it? This sound is Afro House, and at its core, it is electronic music specifically House and Techno, that features African vocals, instruments, and percussive elements as part of its identity.

Afro House was born in South Africa and is an evolution of Kwaito, Soulful House, and Deep House. As South Africa emerged from Apartheid in the 1990s, the mood signaled freedom and liberation. Mandela’s ascension to the highest office shifted the political and social climate of the nation, imbuing a sense of hope and joy. Kwaito was the dominant sound of the period,

and it embodied this feeling.

Kwaito is a dance music genre that essentially is House with a slower tempo and hip-hop style vocals rapped in the various South African languages. But as with all things, the sound grew and evolved into what we call Afro House today.

Like House music, it typically falls in the 120 BPM range.

Characterized by polyrhythmic percussion to accompany the classic 4/4 structure of House music, Afro House eschews synths and mechanical overtones for more organic sounds. It typically also features vocals sung or chanted in various African languages (though many songs are sung in French, Spanish, or Portuguese).

However, the language used isn’t relevant, as the message of the

music is universal. Aside from the technical descriptors of the genre, the music itself is highly emotive and fundamentally danceable.

Afro House is the future of electronic music. During its brief existence, it has gone viral around the world (*cough cough*). Black Coffee, a DeeJay, and producer widely regarded as the champion of the sound, has hit a level of superstardom that is rare for any DJ to attain. Namely being the only DJ to be invited as a guest onto The Daily Show, and having his latest album packed with features from bonafide pop stars, including Usher, Diplo, and Elderbrook. Many keen-eared fans will have also heard his song, Superman, used by Drake on Get It Together featuring Jorja

Smith. One needs to look no further than the mega-hit produced by darlings of English dance music Disclosure, Douha (Mali Mali) to see the international appeal and demand for this sound.

Having started in South Africa and spread to other locales through the work of local producers in countries such as Angola and Kenya, the sound has also made the jump to Europe.

It concerns me that a glance at Beatport's Top 10 Afro House will show a majority of the artists getting recognition for this sound are predominantly white and male.

I fear this trend will remove the essence of what made the sound so well received in its inception. The essence of Afro House lies in the representation of a more diverse and inclusive populace. Both in
