Hello, again dear readers, fellow observers of processions. June saw the beginning of shifts in the political and geological climate. The National Election was the highlight of the month, a determinant for many courses of action, which diffused anticipated tensions. Peaceful and active participation was observed and later celebrated.

We look for the little things to celebrate, and last month was full of celebrations. The magazine continues to grow and evolve progressively, experimenting and fine-tuning to your liking. A full three years and We are still here and thriving, & this time with two new sections addressing varied interests – fashion and reading.

Free Soul On the ground floor of Olympia Heights – an unfinished building in front of Dembel City Center a live poetry night took place on June 12, 2021. The venue played an integral role in giving the event the authentic vibe its organizers were going for. Free Soul was an entertaining display of fine arts at its best; it featured some big names in the thriving underground creative culture of the city. Those who came spent the night mesmerized by incredibly talented musicians, poets, and live painters while casually downing their Arada drinks. The performers included Philmon, Betty Bae, Zion, Hailu, and Dey.

Farewell to Brick House It has been a while since Brick House became an almost household name for those youngsters who enjoy spending late nights after work out with friends. As a farewell to the old Brick House and a celebration to a new one, they held a goodbye party inviting all who wanted to come – most of which were regulars. It was a very chill, relaxed, and, at times, energetic party. Enjoyable music along with a fun time spent with groups of friends always seemed to be what set Brick House apart.

Mental Wellness Week In commemoration of May being the Mental Health Awareness Month, KesteDamena held a week-long set of events, all under the theme “Making every day Count.” The guests enjoyed some yoga, massages, painting, planting, and an informative panel discussion on mental wellness, societal pressure, the impacts of Covid on mental health, etc. KesteDamena made this event possible in collaboration with Sleep Right, Sene, Ekalinna Essential Oils, and Joy Gifts. While this was the first event of its kind, it is KesteDamena’s ambition to make it a yearly event.

Busara Championship ChewataCon is known for its over-the-top creativity, fun game nights, and, most of all, its passion for community building. Busara Championship is their latest venture that is a culmination of all that makes ChewataCon unique. On June 26, 2021, ChewataCon finalized the training program it had set for the volunteers and the players for the launching event due Saturday, July 3. Held at the Goethe Institute, the training started at 9 am and finished at 2 pm. If things go according to plan, the Championship (consisting of three games: ‘Joteni’ (Fussball), Digital Gebeta (Mancala), and Busara – a table-top game designed and manufactured by ChewataCon themselves) will be a one of a kind event. I am confident many will find it entertaining.

The New Age of Ethiopian Music?

hion concerts are always something to behold. Theyre always nights of intensity on all sides. The dancing, the music, the lights, the larger-than-life celebrities...AND the thieves, the bathrooms (NOT), and all that. They embody the true nature of what a concert is supposed to look like.

Sometimes a bit too much (with the negative aspects).

While K.a.s.s.m.a.s.s.es concert embodied all that, it also hinted at bigger things for those with a keen eye. This hint, which I might be wrong about, is that Ethiopias music scene is changing, and for the better.

Looking at the crowd during the performances, I couldn’t help but

think they felt well-addressed.

They resonated with the crowd in a way that few do in the Ethiopian music scene. Despite the differences in their styles, they all embodied qualities that the public looks for, especially the youth.

K.a.s.s.m.a.s.s.es music isnt even a genre that one would traditionally associate with a concerts high tempo, jump-jump vibe. That still didnt stop the crowd from going wild.

His performance was impressive.

Especially, considering it was his

very first concert, and he was playing with a band he was unfamiliar with. Not to mention, the nerves. I got a chance to speak with him after the night, and he told me that the stage seemed more like a football field. Despite all this, he delivered one of the best perfor-

mances of the year (in my humble opinion). I say this because both the performance and his music generally bridge gaps hitherto unbridged.

And that is the beauty of the new generation. Previous generations of artists and performances always had one glaring flaw: they had their niche. What was unique about K.a.s.s.m.a.s.s.e and the concert as a whole is that it had something for everybody.

The likes of Babkim, Kechin Tej, and Caress gave house heads like me a respite from the more traditional, mainstream music. Sure, mainstream music is influenced by rock, traditional Ethiopian elements, jazz, reggae, etc. Even Milus hosting highlighted the track that the countrys music scene is on; holistic, organic entertainment instead of scripted, formulaic, dry presentation.

The one thing that was perfect in every way conceivable was the production. From the outfits chosen by the performers (and the lovely hostess) to the stage lights and video jockey tuning to the music in the background, I was mesmerized. The lighting even had a significant impact on the crowd giving everyone the glazed, euphoric eyes associated with sultry music festivals. The lights, coupled with the almost raving mad euphoria with which the

crowd was consuming it, was all surreal, at the time.

Of course, that is not to say that a lot of work doesnt remain. The venue, for starters, needs some serious, serious thought. The fact that people come to Ghion already expecting to encounter thieves and other good-for-nothings is a sign that change is needed, if I have ever seen any. And this is from the side of the public as much as the organizers.

guards. Some might say that I am being a wet blanket. But for me, and I am sure for many others, these kinds of issues take away from enjoying the beauty of the musical spectacle that is a concert. Yes, we cannot expect perfection. But for at least the sake of the artists that are doing big things in our culture, let us do better.

While there were reports from other events about sexual harassment, which the organizers should very promptly, and commendably address, I have yet to hear anything of the sort from Ghion. And I think we can all agree that we havent heard anything not because it doesnt exist, but because it has become the norm.

I even have a somewhat chilling anecdote related to this. At one point during the concert, I was walking around, taking stock of the audience, and desperately looking for a bathroom, when I heard behind me follow this one.

I looked around to see two dudes proceed to follow me, even after it was OBVIOUS that they had such intentions and I was sober. Why? Because, had I gone to any of the empty corridors, I was fair game for violence. I can only imagine what women, and very drunk people, experience.

here has always been a desire for conformity in man. But then, there has been a push against it as well. Once in a while, brave souls are born amongst the masses that defy the rigid rules imposed by society – champions of chaos, if you will. For what would order describe without the existence of a bit of chaos. These “rebels”, “heretics”, or “heathens” wield, in their hearts, the brightly burning torch that guides humanity to new frontiers and adventures.

This happens with every undertaking and field that man partakes in, whether natural sciences, social sciences, or arts. But this writing is dedicated to you art lovers, specifically, those who love painting.

Early in the 1860s, a few young artists began painting modern life the way

they saw it around them. They had quietly rejected the idea that art was to tell stories of religion, mythology, or history – their subject had nothing to do with the past. The principal Impressionist painters were Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot, Armand Guillaumin, and Frédéric Bazille. They influenced each other, worked and exhibited together. Edgar Degas and Paul Cézanne also painted in an Impressionist style for a time in the early 1870s. Although not considered a strict impressionist, Edouard Manet (not Monet) led the vanguard of this rebellion.

rary setting and was scorned by the high-minded salon juries and middle-class audiences of the era.

Furthermore, Manet didn’t depict the nude lady in the painting as a goddess or an angel. Instead, he depicted her as an ordinary being with the signs of mortality.

Le déjeuner sur l'herbe stands at the forefront of the whole Impressionist project in its fearless departure from inherited forms and techniques. From the subtly flattened picture plane to the defiance of time-honored motifs of high-brow nudity, everything about Manet’s painting courted shock and even ridicule. The Impressionists were inspired by Manet's example to chase their creative pursuits. Although Manet was friendly with the Impressionists and exhibited with them - today often grouped with them - his style was, in some ways, very different to theirs.

In the summer of 1869, Monet and Renoir set out to paint at a small outdoor café and bathing establishment in the Seine River near Bougival called La Grenouillère (The Frog Pond). Both Monet and Renoir were living a ‘hand to mouth existence’. Life for artists – especially ones that went against the grain – was quite hard. Thankfully the owner of La Grenouillére, Monsieur Fournaise, accepted some of their paintings in exchange for food.

Together, they painted scenes of boats and swimmers and couples strolling along the water’s edge or crossing the gangplanks. They wanted to capture the shimmer of water, reflection, movement – a fleeting impression. To accomplish this, they painted rather quickly the things they saw. Monet and Renoir’s experiments at La Grenouillère marked the birth of Impressionism.

What is Impressionism?

was an attempt to accurately and objectively record visual reality in terms of transient effects of light and color.

It depicts a painting in a way as if the viewer might have only caught the scene with a glance. The short brushstrokes is what give the overall impression of the object or person, rather than a finely finished, detailed work are characteristic of the paintings. One painting that stands as a prime example of this technique is Monet’s “Woman with a Parasol”, sometimes known as “The Stroll” (French: La Promenade). In this work, Monet captures his wife and son in an outdoor setting. The bright sunlight touches the tip of Monet’s wife’s parasol, and the flowers tinge on the bottom front of her dress. The sheer life of the painting the sense of open space and warmth of the sunlight combine to create a real-life flowing scene for the viewer.

All of this was achieved without the artist realistically finishing his central characters.

The impressionist artists’ subject matter was as innovative as their technique. For them, impressionism was not a style, but rather an attitude towards the relationship between life and art. It was a movement that believed it should express what people care about in their day-to-day lives, not just historical or biblical scenes. Impressionism was all about capturing the beauty of ordinary things, be it a sunrise, a forest, or a friendly interaction. Camille Pissarro’s painting “Hay Harvest at Eragny” is a quintessential example to highlight this point.

His painting is carefully composed of the semicircle of hay bales and the sharp diagonals of the workers' tools, which coax the

eye to meander into the luminous fields distant in the composition.

While the clothing is that of the French countryside, the figures and their peaceful surroundings achieve universality via the lack of recognizable landmarks and the anonymity with which Pissarro paints the peasants' facial features.

Effects of impressionism In the late 1880s, there was yet another revolution in the art world. A group of young artists, once again, chose to adopt a divergent style.

This group included the likes of Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, and Paul Gauguin.

The rippling effects were not only limited to the painting world, however. Writers and Composers experimented with impressionistic techniques as well. Charles Baudelaire’s volume of poetry: the flowers of Evil inspired the symbolist movement in literature. Like impressionist artwork, this poetry communicated through non-formulaic impressions intent on expressing the essence, rather than reproducing it. Inspired by such poets, composer Claude Debussy deviated from the formal structures such as the sonata and sympho-

ny, in favor of less rigid tonalities tailored to express the emotional themes of his work.

Surprisingly, it was the critic Louis Leroy's derogatory comments on a piece by Monet in a satirical review of the First Impressionist Exhibition of 1874, that gave rise to the term "Impressionism". Leroy's review used the term as a comic insult, but the new school of painters quickly adopted it in a spirit of pride and defiance. This shows you the courage and zeal that mankind has in the face of adversity. The impressionists who dared create something new were metaphorically crucified by critics, and most of the public. Yet they persevered to undoubtedly push the boundaries of artistic freedom and forever changed the way we define art.

Boutique Where Gourmet Meets Simplicity

ext time you head to Sarbet and feel the need to treat yourself around Mechare Meda, look across Queens supermarket. That’s right; the curious dining hall going by the name The Food Boutique is where Gourmet meets simplicity.

Since this eatery claimed to be the first of its kind in Addis, a grocery store-restaurant hybrid, it was hard to not get excited about what they had to offer. The Food Boutique boasted authentic Italian cuisine, so I was obligated to confirm the claim firsthand.

Upon my entry, I was immediately greeted with the sight of a beautiful mural to my left. It displayed a collage of artwork showcasing ev-

erything from cocktails and Roman statues to lemons and kirars. It was colorful and vibrant- I could not take my eyes off of it. The quiet, sleekness of the rest of the place meant the art stood out proudly. I later learned the interior was designed in collaboration with Ato Fasil Giorgis (a well-known architect in the city) with murals made by street artists.

Now settled in my seat, choosing what to order became the task at hand.

And it was tough. Everything looked good, but with the help of our amazing waiter, we finally decided. As we waited, I chatted with Alessandra Frezza and her husband, Eran Assidon about The Food Boutique. “We opened our doors sometime around the beginning of May,” Alessandra starts, “We wanted

to bring an Italian experience to Addis. We have Italian chefs everywhere in the kitchen- from the pizzeria to the pastry.” When I asked her about the grocery store, she replied, “The main message we want our customers to know is, ‘Whatever you eat here, you can attempt to make at home’. If you liked a certain dish, you can pick up the exact ingredients we used right here at our store.” And you really could see your meals being prepared.

The Food Boutique is a daughter venture of the famous food importing company - Novis. It was no surprise to find out that they import almost all of their ingredients; it also explained away the higher-than-average price of the meals. This reli-

ance on imports also meant that the Food Boutique primarily focused on pasta instead of meat dishes. “We deeply value consistency. Knowing how things are, having a constant supply of fresh chicken and other types of meat would be difficult.”

She tells me, “We never want a customer to come here, try to order a meal and have them hear, ‘Oh no sorry, we do not have that today.’ We want to stay consistent in both quantity and quality.” On the name, Alessandra says, “We wanted people to know it was an exclusive place to eat. The name kind of expresses that, no? A boutique is also a place to shop, so we wanted to incorporate the grocery shopping aspect of the place in the name as well.”

Our food finally arrived, and I bid my hosts farewell. We had ordered a Margherita pizza, a Chicken Panini, and a Pasta al Forno with meatballs.

The Margherita pizza looked like it came straight from Naples. The Cornicione (the edges of a pizza crust) was thick and airy, while the rest of the crust was razor-thin. I picked up a slice, took a bite, and basked in the glory of the

Finally, my fork snaked its way to the Pasta al Forno. This classic, household name of a dish, was baked here with a short pasta - Rigate. The Rigate was ideal because its curved, pipe-like shape pocketed the copious amount of cheese very well. I took a bite.

The cheese, on and inside the Rigate, was delicate and stringy. The pasta itself was soft and pleasant, while the meatballs were incredibly rich and yielding. It was a smash hit and my favorite dish from the three.

Although open for only a month so far (two by the time this is published), Alessandra and Eran tell me reception has been better than expected.

Titled on the menu as Buonissimo (Italian for very good), I can safely say it lived up to its name. It was simplistic perfection.

I next tried the Panini. I sank my teeth into it. The chicken cutlet was wonderfully crisp on the outside and tender inside. The mayo slathered on the fresh bread was just spicy enough to add some zing to this

Having now concluded with the main course, I was free to indulge in desserts. Tiramisù was the cake of choice. When served, I noticed its unique design: it was surrounded by coffee meringue and brunoises. The main cake, the actual tiramisù, was soft and airy. The ladyfingers provided the right amount of coffee-flavored sponginess. The creamy layer contrasted the bitterness of the coffee with its sweetness. It was delicious

alone, but with the dry meringue providing some crunch as well, I would say it was perfection. No wonder Tiramisù translates to pick me up. This is comfort food at its finest!

By this point, I could say I was more than satisfied. Albeit for the somewhat steep price, I was nonetheless, guaranteed the genuine Italian experience promised by The Food Boutique. If you doubt me, go on and feed your curiosity.

Better to visit them yourself.

What did traveling teach you? Any favorite destinations?

It's funny, because music was such a huge part of my life, as both my parents are musicians, that I don't even remember my first song. When other kids were outdoors playing sports, I was experimenting with the piano and other instruments at the music conservatory where my mom taught. More notable to me than my first song was the first time I recorded in a professional studio.

It was the greatest escape. A whole new world. A place of infinite sonic capabilities. All the buttons. Perfect sound. Forever changed me.

Traveling is a humbling experience.

In many moments in travel, you literally defy time and space. To move through this earth is a high-level gift to life. There is also traveling through words, images, and sounds. All of which I am grateful to experience on a daily basis. Traveling shows us, the more we are different, the more we really are the same at the core. I have had the great pleasure to travel many places around this world. My list of favorites is long and varied in reason. I am most fond

Did you have parent support in your creative pursuits?

One of the things I think that has brought me to this point is that I was raised in the spirit of, "as long as you're happy." I never felt any pressure to "be this" or “do this" so I always felt open to exploring. I have rarely in my life felt like anything was impossible, so I roamed freely within the constraints of respect for where and who I came from.

What made you decide to come to Ethiopia?

I was performing in DC with the amazing Ethiopian songstress Wayna. We performed a concert in front of thousands of Ethiopians at a club called Cada Vez. Wayna asked me if I would perform a few songs to open the show as we played with some of the same musicians and the band knew my songs. What resulted was a connection like I had never experienced before. The promoter of the show, Emmanuel Mekuria was opening a new club in Addis called Harlem Jazz and asked her if she knew anyone like me who

would be interested in coming to Ethiopia for a 6-month residency.

She said, "ask him." I had toured the world through music but had never been on the continent. I had also been going back and forth from New York and LA and all places in between trying to get a record deal.

I was emotionally and spiritually drained and needed a change in reality and after he told me "I could find myself" in Ethiopia, I agreed to take the leap.

What convinced you to stay here?

After 6 months, I was just getting into the groove of a new beat so to speak.

One of which I was finding myself very much in the pocket. I was indeed finding myself, unlocking previously new life and creative possibilities. To see the world from a different vantage point is truly a gift to treasure. So, I accepted it as

a longer journey that I was meant to continue. The rest, in full cliché, is history.

What are the best & worst aspects of life in Ethiopia?

The worst aspect of my life in Ethiopia is that I am too far to share my daily experiences with my family and friends in America in real-time. I am a person who misses people more than places, but the fact that I made Ethiopia my home made me adapt this trait in order to maintain a degree of sanity whereby I can manage the longing. This has also taught me to cherish the time I have with my loved ones as I am always comforted by the power of great memories. As I live with a sense of purpose to create as much as possible, I strive to create more time with the people I love.

What has been the biggest lesson living in Ethiopia has taught you?

Ethiopia's biggest lesson is that of patience. As a westerner who grew up in the comforts of access and availability, it would be easy for me to complain and compare. Instead, there is a connection with the present which exists when you simply wait for things to happen in their right and proper time. It's like receiving an extra breath for every breath. It makes you feel more alive.

What is the advantage of being a selftaught creator/artist?

When you are self-taught, you get the opportunity to fall at every bend in each corner. If you never fall, you never learn how to pick yourself up.

You also break rules without shame.

All pioneers have become known in history by surpassing that which was formerly unthinkable. The record breakers. The genre blurrers. The barrier eliminators. The out of the box thinkers. The fearless expressors.

How aware have you been of the link between brain development and engaging with the world with your hands?

As a designer and producer, I have exercised the art of finding best practices and best systems to get a job done. My mind never rests on the sight of a problem yet rushes to the collage of possible solutions.

More than words, there is no better way to express your ideas than to be "hands-on." This is why I like to be involved directly in all aspects of my creative endeavors. In the advent of more access to information, I spend most nights online, learning about the various disciplines of my interest so that I can communicate creation on an international level from a unique continental perspective. To become a master of anything, you must commit to the endless journey of being a student. The mind is that infinite universe.

What other skill/passion would you like to cultivate next?

As I have spent nearly 30 years in the music business, I am now focusing my energy on the visual side of the arts through film and photography.

I have always created music with pictures in mind and now I am interested in creating pictures to create soundtracks for.

What do you think of the cutthroat music industry in the US? All industries, in these modern times, are cutthroat in the world we live in. I am drawn to business and sectors where skill and quality are valued in success VS. Ones where nepotism and unethical practices create the front runners. I am blessed that I make my art to free my soul.

That freedom is a life currency. I am rewarded by gratitude and my commitment to creating honestly and from the heart.

If you could only say one thing, what would you tell 20-year-old Kenny?

It is my 20-year-old self I long to get back to actually. I loved him dearly.

He was curious. He was fearless.

He was open to new experiences.

He felt the deepest heartbreak. He was an amazing songwriter and his words and expression were newly discovered. The two things I would have really advised him now are to learn to manage money and eat better.

What do you think is the biggest and most common barrier that has limited most from expressing themselves?

I don't feel like most are not expressing themselves. I think people express themselves based on what they know and what they are exposed to.

There are instances where people don't express themselves for fear of societal backlash or fear that others won't accept or understand their expression. True expression is a luxury starting first with a sense of freedom. I also feel the ability to express oneself is a gift that one nurtures over the course of a lifetime based on the ability to exist without the need for validation or the development of the ability to put ideas in broadcast form, whether it be speech, art, or other delivery.

What would you say is the one thing that we lack as a society, standing in the way of our collective happiness?

a collective is about as realistic as collecting every droplet of the ocean in a water bottle. The earth is a spiritual battleground, a transit towards an infinite destination.

Can we make the world a happier place? Absolutely, yes. The man-inthe-mirror approach keeps us all accountable for our actions. As the act of love is perfect in every way, we must collectively act upon the idea that "If you want to deal with the world, you've got to love yourself.

Consisting of many developing countries, most of the continent's economy is heavily dependent on SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). This sector is what has the most potential to propel the continent forward, taking into account its potential. As far as potential goes, a lot has been said of Africa’s untapped riches. Some long-standing enterprises have grown into titans in their industries, and the number is still growing. Here are five among many of these conglomerates committed to Africa's future:

The Suez Canal Authority The company is responsible for the maintenance and functional operation of the Suez Canal along with traffic safety and all other matters that relate to the canal. The Suez Canal Authority is a governmental agency that was formed in 1956 and is owned, controlled, and maintained by the state authority of Egypt. It has its headquarters in Ismailia and was set up by Egypt when they wanted to replace the Suez Canal Company. It has 114 ferry connections with 36 ferry boats that serve thousands daily with services ranging from emergency down to trade. During the 2016 financial year, the company recorded its highest turnover of US$5 billion.

Bidford Company Founded in 1999 and with over 5,000 people under its employ, Bidford Company is a division of the Bidvest company. Bidvest is involved in the agricultural line of business and is known for mostly operating in South Africa. And while this is true, Bidford company is also an international entity with a significant presence. Bidford Company works in 4 countries worldwide, including its offices in the Greater Detroit Area, Great Lakes, and the Midwestern US. Due to its broad reach and total revenue generated, Bidford entered the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) list on Monday, 30th May 2016.

Sonatrach One can not talk about gas in Africa without mentioning Sonatrach. This Algerian gas giant is the first company listed when it comes to gas in Africa. All gas and oil-related ventures like exploration, production, pipeline, transportation, processing, and marketing of hydrocarbons and their by-products fall under this gas giant.

Petroleum and petrol products allow it to generate annual revenue of 58 billion dollars. The company works in several regions in the world, including Europe, Latin America, and the USA. Its involvement in the African economy is mostly gas-related. In the other 18 countries in which it operates, Sonatrach's scope covers other energy-related areas like desalination of seawater and power generation.

Covid-19 regulations. The next room houses a studio with yoga, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) & aerobics classes.

Stepping upstairs after confirming your reservation is the moment the experience’s exclusivity starts to set. The staff was very corporative, respectful and welcoming as all service providers should be. On the second story awaits the outdoor exercise area and the spa.

A spa complete with a steam bath & a sauna, showers, and bathrooms awaited me. The relaxing flute music was a gentle reminder of the calmness this haven exudes. The seclusion found here in the spacious and peaceful relaxation area is worth seeking.

A secret weapon in their health arsenal is an herbal tea made of Citronella - a lemongrass-like herb used for detoxification. The tea is delicious, too. It tastes like a spa in a cup: light, herbaceous, soothing & warming, Massage treatments and therapies have dedicated treatment rooms you must book in advance.

Once on the benches, you are in the good hands of their certified therapists. I admire the ability of chiropractors, physiotherapists, and masseuses to understand and work with the human body like no one else. Going in for an upper-body oil massage in a while, I expected a sense of relaxation and some pain alleviation. A few

minutes into the session, I start to feel the tense muscles loosen, the rested ones relaxing even more.

Intentional use of the base of the palm, the forearm, fingers, and the occasional gentle elbow, ensure the masseuses hit almost every muscle, tendon, and ligament you can imagine. They use an oil blend of their own rubbed deep into your tissues to relieve pain and help with inflammation. I was very impressed by the standards set and met here; the staff is professional, caring, and attentive to your needs through communication.

chapter of SWAA (Spa & Wellness Association of Africa), with SPA Africa certifications proudly decorating their reception wall. They have so much to offer I cannot mention all in this review. Dermatological treatments, waxing, tinting, and what not, add to this already impressive list of services provided.

The thing with such experiences is that no matter how much you might think you do not need it, your body & mind probably do. It helps to whatever extent you pursue it, but holistic wellbeing is an often neglected need. I highly recommend this to anyone… at least one time for the sake of trying. I hold my word beyond this, but I am confident that one visit will leave you craving for more.

or this month, I’ll review two new action films that take different approaches to the genre. The first one is F9, the simpler, louder, and more cartoonish of the two.

The 9th entry into the tired franchise follows the usual crew as they navigate around a weak plot with the usual crazy stunts. I would be shocked if anybody at all cares about the Fast and Furious plotlines anymore.

At this point, the films are fully aware of what they are; they have no delusions of grandeur or intentions of improving.

These are films written for, and possibly by, 8-year-old boys. I always feel slightly ashamed when I see the F&F movies at the cinema like I’m the only grown-up at a children’s concert. They have officially stopped trying to make sense or appeal to a broader audience.

The problem with these films is not that they have too many action sequences; it is

that they have childishly unrealistic action sequences. Most of the action sequences are just hilariously stupid.

Case in point, two of the characters strap a rocket on their car, shoot to outer space, and ram into a satellite.

And they are back home in time for the barbeque scene in the end. Who writes this shit?

It’s also really annoying when they try to have ‘emotional’ or sentimental scenes. Neither the actors nor the writers are equipped for such seriousness and it is way out of their depth. They should just stick with the action and not bother with the foreplay.

All in all, if you were born sometime around 2010, you’ll probably enjoy this movie. Otherwise, don’t bother with this.

, a mysterious man joins an armored truck company and his coworkers slowly start to question his motives when he shows he’s too overqualified for the job. Based on the 2004 French film “Cash Truck”, Wrath of man is a revenge film which, unlike the film mentioned, doesn’t rely too heavily on action sequences. It rather depends on the story as well. Revenge films often have straightforward storylines, but the non-linear structure here keeps it interesting. The plot reveals itself just slowly enough to keep you engaged the whole way.

It’s good to see Jason Statham and Guy Richie back together after so long.

This film is nowhere near as inspired, as their early movies (Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch), but it’s still great entertainment. The cinematography, acting, directing, and music is all pretty good. Even though I wasn’t disappointed, I still expected more from Guy Richie

as he’s one of the best in action directing. This film feels intentionally restrained from his usual visual flair to make room and focus on tight storytelling. This delivery approach still makes it a better action film than most recent releases.

Another thing I loved about this is that it feels like an action film from the mid-2000s. Not just because of the look and feel, but it’s a self-contained story told to its completion with no hope or necessity for a sequel. I haven’t seen an action movie like that in a while, most studio films feel compelled to keep the ending just open enough in case they need to milk an entire franchise out of it. But this wraps it all up and concludes the story like they used to.

If you miss serious and/or realistic action films, you should check this out.

outh Africa remains a sacred place for dance music. With products such as Kwaito, Shangaan Electro, and in recent years, Afro House, Gqom, and Amapiano (Not to mention all the infinite variations and subgenres falling underneath these umbrella terms) indicating that in this country- dance music is pop music.

The most recent export, Amapiano, is an undeniably fun and kinetic hybrid House genre that borrows elements from other genres. Namely, the percussion patterns of traditional music, the pitched-up Jazz, and Gospel influenced piano and synth lines, the barreling heavy log drums and basslines borrowed from Kwaito.

The origins of Amapiano are hotly contested, with various townships around Johannesburg and Pretoria claiming ownership over the birthplace of the sound.

It is acknowledged that it was the DJ/Producer duo - MFR Souls who coined the term “Amapiano”. It was perhaps put most elegantly by David Ngoma, Kabza de Small’s manager, “It belongs to the townships of South Africa”.

The grassroots nature of this movement is evident in its viral-like explosion. Much like Gqom, initially, radio stations were hesitant to play the sound. In a throwback to the 90s era of the DIY ethos, mixtapes and bootleg CDs (But now in the

DJ Benaiah, Addis Ababa’s very own Amapiano ambassador had this to say about the growth of the sound: “I truly believe there is more to Amapiano than just the sound of it.

Many Yanos lovers will tell you; it is a lifestyle. It has a strong cultural aesthetic and expression that is accompanied by fly urban streetwear and unique dance moves. What has made it such a success, is the fierce support from fans. This shows even in all the dances and memes that go viral every week on social media. It’s also still evolving. We now have Private School Amapiano, Dust/Street Amapiano, and Techno Amapiano (or as I like to call it, AmaTech). Even South African hip-hop tunes around 90bpm now include the log drum and Amapiano synths in their tracks as an ode to the genre.

and I truly feel one of the finest ways of seeing that firsthand is through what’s happening with Amapiano.

All the DJs and artists are working with one another, collaborating and curating the sound for the rest of Africa, with a spillover into the rest of the world. It’s made by Africans, for Africans, telling the various stories unique to us, Africans. Understanding this is what has made Amapiano special to me. We don’t have to conform to musical genres and styles from all over the world (and there’s no problem with that), but when we focus on what we have within ourselves, we can truly become successful as Africans.”

This synergy between social media, culture, fashion and the global embrace from the black diaspora of the sound seems to be ushering in a new wave and propelling Amapiano from just a genre of music towards something much larger - a cultural phenomenon.

When artists have space to freely create without gatekeepers to corral the sound into predetermined molds - what happens is exciting, innovative, and fresh.

The advent of social media (and its widespread use) is making the barrier for entry almost non-existent by stripping power away from major record labels and radio networks. Considering all this, I can bet that Amapiano is here to stay.

2. Harry Potter Series

by J.K. Rowling Any book recommendation would not be complete without including the magical Harry Potter series! Be it your first read, or your zillionth, the Harry Potter series is perfect for any season. Especially during the rainy season when all you want is to get lost in a book.

While the story by itself is delightful to read, my recommendation is that you put your imagination and creativity forward and pay more attention to the fine details in the narration. J.K. Rowling has indeed cast magic in the Harry Potter series through her writing!

Musical Pairing: The magical song “Qesa” by singer Dibekulu is a great pair with the Harry Potter series. Both the book and the music have the power to transport us to another dimension and world.
