How an off-year election could affect Kentucky’s race for governor By Nathan Granger and Meghan Goth

Y

ou’ve probably heard there’s a gubernatorial election coming up.

But wait. It’s 2023. Why are we voting for governor in an off-year? Kentucky is one of only three states that hold off-year gubernatorial elections. Along with Louisiana and Mississippi, the state’s highest office will be decided during a year when voters won’t already be coming to the polls to cast their ballots for president or congressional races. Which can mean much lower turnout, according to local voting data and former Northern Kentucky University political science professor Ryan Salzman. In the 2019 election, for example, voter turnout was just under 40% in Campbell County, according to data from the state board of elections. But for the presidential race in 2020? Turnout was over 60%. The same holds true at the national level: About 60% of the voting-eligible population casts ballots during presidential elec-

New look, even more great reporting

ou’ve probably noticed that this week’s issue looks a little different from our previous LINK Readers. The truth is, we never wanted to be a 10-inch-square publication. When we launched the LINK Reader in 2022, we intended to print a paper that looks like the one you are holding in your hands. COVID-19-related paper shortages had a different idea, though.

Less than a week before our first print edition went to press, our printer told us that it could not source enough paper for the larger-size newspaper we wanted. So, being

LINK, we pivoted, redesigning our entire paper to be smaller and more square. We changed how our covers were designed and made sure the content we had would fit into the new space.

Two years later, the paper supply chain has finally settled down, and we’re able to bring you a larger, more newspaper-y newspaper. We’ve also chosen to upgrade the paper stock of the Reader, which makes our photos and text sharper, crisper and more vibrant.

Here's what to expect to see on your ballot on Nov. 7 p18

We hope you are as excited as we are about this evolution of our print product. All our weekly papers, from today forward, will be this new size, which allows us to tell even more stories about the community we love: Northern Kentucky.
