Multi-Million Pound Sports Centre For University A new University of Derby sports centre is set to open in the first half of next year (2015). Derby City Council has now approved plans for the centre – expected to cost around £10m – which will be built into the existing eight-metre high grass bank around the bottom playing field, at the University's main Kedleston Road site in Derby.

Work on the three-storey structure is scheduled to begin within the next couple of months, with the sports centre set to open by spring 2015. The sports centre will include a main hall, a fitness gym and associated strength and conditioning area, studios, squash and badminton courts, an internal climbing wall, sprint track, changing rooms, treatment rooms and a cafe.

Architects’ firm William Saunders, of Newark, designed the building, which will be a stand out feature. Currently the tenders are being evaluated and the main contractor to deliver the project will be announced soon. By building the sports centre into an existing grass bank, giving it a green-coloured curved roof and re-using any excavated material for surrounding ramps, it is hoped that its environmental and visual impact will be minimised.

The facility will be built to a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) standard, widely used as a method to assess buildings' sustainability. Low carbon technologies are being investigated to produce its heating and lighting, and make it highly energy efficient, to reaffirm the University’s commitment to protecting the environment. centre's primary use would be for staff and students but – as with a number of the University’s sports facilities – there will be opportunities for use by affiliated sports organisations, schools and the wider community.

Hari Punchihewa, University of Derby Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director, said: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for the new sports centre.

“We are serious about sport and it is going from strength to strength at the University, through our Team Derby brand. It is important for us to have a modern, multi-purpose centre for both leisure pursuits and to aid those studying sportsrelated academic courses.”

Steni Helps School Gets A New Face And Coat Rainscreen cladding panels from Steni UK have helped an infants school achieve a new look and a BREEAM rating into the bargain.

Five special colours of Steni’s Colour fibreglass reinforced polymer composite panels with a smooth surface of electron beam-cured acrylic (without the use of solvents) were specified by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for the £1million redevelopment of Valley Infants School. The two-form entry infant school with 240 children on roll was built in 1957 over a single storey over two floor levels using a timber-framed modular system with single-glazed wooden windows and vertical painted timber board-clad uninsulated hollow walls.

As such, it was identified by the council’s primary capital programme (PCP) as being in the highest category and requiring major PCP action in terms of improving the structure and fabric to extend its design life and encouraging community use.

Three programmes of work comprised modernisation of the whole building external envelope, addition of a new attached 86m² community room and extension of the existing IT classroom from 37m² to 57m². A new 10m² secure entrance lobby was also included.

All the new-build elements were designed to achieve a BREEAM “Very good” rating, with 60% reduced carbon emissions. All of the existing timber-clad walls were stripped back to the uninsulated wooden framing for inspection and making good before installation of a vapour control layer, non-combustible board sheathing, bonded dense insulation, and Steni’s rainscreen cladding on a timber support system.

Architect Marcus Russell of Solihull MBC’s building design group said: “A progression of four harmonious colours was chosen to highlight the identity of the nursery and separate year groups. As a foil to emphasis the colours, set back elements were treated in a light neutral grey to accentuate their appearance as voids against the coloured classroom blocks.

A bright yellow was selected for the nursery while the new community room and reception class is lime green and the extended IT classroom, kitchen and main entrance/admin offices blue. The library and Year 2 classroom are orange.

Steni’s Colour range comprises 44 standard colours and three gloss levels. Completely resistant to weather, water, chemicals, impact and fire (Class O performance), Steni Colour panels also feature a 40-year working guarantee.

Parents and neighbours of Valley Infants School who attended a consultation meeting felt the new colours would reflect the vibrancy of the school but expressed concern about graffiti on the cladding panels.

They were advised that “In addition to the aesthetic improvement, the replacement cladding panels would help provide additional insulation and their glossy finish would help limit and reduce graffiti, and if graffiti was to appear it could be wiped off very easily.”

The first category is to ensure that the structural elements of a building designed to support a load (i.e. floor joists that bear the overall floor structure), maintain their loadbearing capacity. The fire ratings required for loadbearing elements is generally measured in an amount of time that that building element is required to maintain its structural strength; commonly a 30 minute or 60 minute fire rating.

The second category is commonly known as ‘Spread of Flame’ protection.

This is a fire-rating that is specific to how a particular substrate can prevent a fire from spreading across its surface. An untreated wooden panelled wall would have no resistance to the spread of flame across it’s surface and cause the fire to spread into the rest of the building. This rating is measured in two classifications: Class 1 or Class 0 Spread of Flame. These two categories are now being replaced with a new internationaly recognised test, now known as an SBI Rating.

The HW system was applied at 2 coats 8m² per litre per coat onto 15mm tongue and grooved pine-wood profiles, a typical surface cladding (or wooden lining) used in the Scandinavian house sector.

The test is designed to evaluate the coverings ability to protect the construction behind the covering. According to regulations a K210 rating is required, ensuring that wooden linings of this type resist the fire for a full 10 minutes ensuring that more flammable material behind the covering does not ignite for that set time, in this way reducing the intensity of the fire for the first critical 10 minutes, allowing the occupants effective escape to safety.

The HW system successfully passed the EN 14135 test at the Danish Institute of Fire and Security Technology (DBI) in Copenhagen, and is now being specified throughout the Scandinavian housing sector market.

Versatile Partitions Delight School Hebden Green Community Special School in Cheshire were in need of a way to separate areas of their main hall for different types of events and activities that are held there. This large folding or concertina partition supplied by Building Additions provided the perfect solution.

The room divider can be very easily and quickly be opened or closed to adjust the room size and close off the corridor area behind to keep noise and distractions from the main hall area.

When opened the narrow stack style takes up hardly any valuable space at all. With the noise levels of some concern, Building Additions used the Acoustic 200 (24 dB) fabric. With the colour scheme already set in the hall, the graduated colours of blue where a perfect choice.

RigiSystems Provides Finishing Touch For St Albert The Great RigiSystems Ziplok aluminium standing seam roofing has been used to provide the crowning glory to St Albert the Great Catholic Primary School in Hemel Hempstead. The Ziplok was site rolled in single lengths from eaves to eaves, in lengths of 46m on the main roof in a combined convex and concave wave format. The roof was supported on acoustic structural decking in 0.75mm thick steel x 100mm deep trapezoidal profile, with thermal Insulation material to achieve 0.23 U value. RigiSystems Micromatt finish was used on the Ziplok to provide a pre-weathered appearance to the whole building.

Hochiki’s FIREscape Emergency Lighting Solution Enhances Safety Of Staff And Students At Teesside University Teesside University has become firmly established as one of the UK’s foremost higher education establishments. Located in Middlesbrough, on the south bank of the River Tees, it began life as a technical college designed to support the region’s engineering, bridge and shipbuilding industries.

Smith, Hochiki Europe’s UK sales manager, to visit the site. Mark comments, ‘When I met Tony and David, as well as talking to them about the many features of the system, I was also able to provide an accurate idea of the long-term cost savings it could offer.’

Over the last few years, Teesside University has made a £150m investment in improving its facilities. Middlesbrough Tower is the most eye-catching structure on the campus and at 11 storeys high it houses the main reception area, administrative facilities and teaching areas. As one of the oldest buildings on the site, it is currently undergoing a phased refurbishment. The building’s previous emergency lighting system had been in place since the late 1960s and for the University’s estates manager, David Newton, it was time to upgrade this important part of its life safety infrastructure.

Hochiki Europe recently carried out a comparison of FIREscape compared to a traditional manual test system and identified all the costs associated with each on a 1,000 luminaire system used over a 10 year period. Smith adds, ‘It factored in maintenance labour, battery replacement, testing labour, recycling costs, energy use and initial capital outlay. We found that over this period of time FIREscape could save a massive £184,885, with a CO2 reduction of over 29.5 tonnes.’

David explains, ‘The central battery systems had become expensive to run and maintain, and took up quite a lot of space. Also, the 8W luminaires that the old system used needed to be changed on an all too frequent basis, and this took a lot of time and money to do. Therefore, I wanted to install a system that would reduce overheads, while utilising the latest energy saving technology.’

Teesside University has had a long-standing relationship with local life safety specialist, Tees Fire Systems. The company designs, supplies, installs, commissions and repairs fire detection and emergency lighting systems all over the UK and has gained an enviable reputation for its expertise. Tony Cooney is the company’s technical sales director, and comments, ‘David had very specific criteria for the new emergency lighting system and we had to suggest a solution that could meet all of them. We have worked with Hochiki Europe for many years and have always been highly impressed with the design, quality and reliability of its products. Having heard about the new FIREscape emergency lighting solution, which utilises light emitting diode (LED) technology, we believed it would be ideal for this particular application.’

Manufactured in the UK, FIREscape is an EN 50172 compliant intelligent low voltage system, which comprises an addressable emergency lighting control panel with battery back-up, and features addressable, self-contained LED luminaires and signage connected via low voltage (40V) cabling. The luminaires are also equipped with battery back-up, ensuring they will function in every situation. Tony asked Mark

So far, over 500 LED luminaires and have been sited and these are linked to four addressable control panels using existing cabling. Once the project is completed the control panels will be networked so that they can be monitored from a central location with the estates department. The system has been configured with two modes that are programmed via the control panels. The first is an emergency mode, where the lights operate at maximum illumination if there is a power failure.

Secondly, normal or maintained mode means that the system can be used as part of the permanent lighting of the building during pre-defined periods of a day. This is currently employed in the main corridors and stairs for when the cleaners are carrying out their work in the building.

Due to its complexity, maintaining the previous system was a major problem and involved significant time, effort and money. However, with FIREscape, the estates management team can maintain it in-house and remain compliant with EN 50172, due to its use of low voltage cabling. The control panels continuously monitor and test the functionality of the system and it can also be pre-programmed to carry out specific monthly, six monthly and annual tests.

This level of in-built functionality also makes the system fully compliant with the requirements of BS 5266-1:2005, while reducing Teesside University’s operational overheads. What’s more, its long life LED technology also means that it requires only one per cent of the bulb changes required with traditional lighting, lowering costs even further.

53 Electro Roof Windows And Blinds For Essex Academy Two new timber buildings at Ockendon Academy have seen use of 53 FAKRO Electro roof windows with blinds. 16 were installed in the 7-classroom English block while 37 were used on the larger ‘Ockendon Studio School’, a self-contained 6th form facility for year 12 and 13 students. Coxdome Sheds New Light On Waylands Academy The re-roofing of an education building dating from the 1950s has included the installation of nearly 70 Coxdome Trade Range Rooflights in different sizes, improving both the appearance and the thermal performance of the building while offering optimum natural daylighting to areas such as corridors and kitchens as well as classrooms.

The decision to replace the 60 year old existing rooflights was taken for a number of reasons aside from their actual aged appearance, many of them leaking and offering poor security as well as little insulation.

By contrast, the double-skinned polycarbonate enclosures to the Coxdome Trade Range rooflights offers much improved thermal performance and the avoidance of condensation. In addition, while the 67 contemporary Coxdome units offer good standards or airtightness and weather resistance where the domes seal against their frame, they were specified with either trickle ventilators or manually operated vents, depending on their location. The rooflight dimensions also varied with sizes including 1050 x 1050 mm and 1000 x 2200 mm.

A proportion of the new Coxdomes were supplied with kerb adaptors to assist with incorporating them into the high performance built-up felt system.

The new Coxdome rooflights with their tough but low weight polycarbonate domes proved easy to handle and straightforward to fit for Faber Roofing’s operatives, while the upstands offer an ideal slope up which to dress the roof-covering.

Designed by Surface to Air Architects, the two-storey primary school is located on the site of a former city farm, and is the first stage of a complex three-stage project.

The scheme has been built as a three-form entry primary school, but the Yorkon building system is sufficiently flexible to enable it to be used initially as a secondary school, pending its move to a permanent site. Phase two will revert the building back to a primary school and will include full landscaping, and construction of a multiuse games area, football pitch, flood lighting and further play areas. The final stage will accommodate a change to a five-form entry primary school, which will see the scheme doubling in size, with a sports hall linking the two buildings.

The Portakabin Group’s Yorkon building system has reduced the number of steelframed modules by half, to only 48 18m long units, and was handed over just 14 weeks after the building arrived on site. This solution was a more flexible alternative for the Council because it allows the space to be easily reconfigured to meet the needs of both a primary and a secondary school.

Each module was delivered with a high performance concrete floor already in place providing a robust finish for a demanding education environment.Commenting on the project, Andrew Roberts, Head of Riverside School said, “We are really impressed with the finished building. Shackerley’s Prefabricated Ceramic Granite Façade System Clads University Square Stratford Shackerley’s fully prefabricated Sureclad® ceramic granite ventilated cladding system has provided a stunning outer envelope for a new £33 million university building in the heart of London’s East End. Designed by Make Architects and delivered in a design and build contract by VolkerFitzpatrick in association with AWW Architects, University Square Stratford provides a new academic and educational hub for Birkbeck, University of London and the University of East London (UEL).

The brief called for a flexible multi-functional building providing a wide range of facilities under one roof.

University Square was to bring together lecture theatres, dance spaces, music rooms, teaching rooms, large presentation rooms and open-plan spaces in one

architecturally striking and coherent building, confident of its shared purpose and with distinct place-making qualities.

Make’s bold and expressive design comprises clearly defined interlocking blocks which articulate the internal functionality and organisation of space. Single extruded cantilevers on each side and double-height roof structures add to its distinctive angular geometry.

Looking for a premium quality exterior cladding material that would give the building a feeling of permanence and longevity, the architects specified Shackerley’s Sureclad® ceramic granite ventilated façade system, employing contrasting black panels in highly polished and naturally textured finishes.

Design Architect James Taylor commented: “We envisaged the building as a single rock-like element that has been carved to create the overall form (expressed with the textured panels) which has then had its most outer faces honed or polished (expressed with the glossy reflective panels). The addition of patinated gold coloured metal panelling acts as a relief to the ceramic granite surfaces, catching the light like flecks of precious stone within a granite rock.”

Whilst the use of Shackerley’s ceramic granite cladding met aesthetic requirements, the use of the company’s patented Sureclad® Access ventilated façade system helped the architects to deliver a practical, energy efficient outer envelope, with effective external thermal and acoustic insulation installed in the cavity behind the façade.

Achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’, the building is a prime example of sustainable building design. Its many environmentally friendly features include over 700m2 of photovoltaic panels which were positioned in large arrays on the

Pupils And Staff Settle Into New School, Thanks To Scape And Willmott Dixon PUPILS and staff are settling into a brand new state-of-the-art school in Lincoln, thanks to construction procurement, design and consultation specialists Scape and contractor Willmott Dixon. Lincoln Carlton Academy now has a brand new site in Carlton Boulevard in the city.

Scape and Willmott Dixon are the two companies behind Sunesis - a suite of standardised, but visually appealing designs offering time efficient, safe and cost effective delivery of new facilities in the education, leisure and care sectors. The school is the first Sunesis building in Lincoln. Sunesis schools are high quality buildings which are delivered on average 12 months faster and 30 per cent cheaper than traditional approaches.

The Lincoln new build was prompted by a shortage of primary school places in Lincoln which saw the reception year children being taught from a classroom two miles away from the new school. The new class started school at the new building last month and will be followed by a new set of pupils each September until the school is home to a full intake of four to 11-year-olds. Marie-Clare Bretherton, executive head teacher at the school, said the pupils were settling in well and were very excited about the new building. A particular strength of the school which all the pupils enjoy is its open and spacious ‘learning street’ which features break out areas

for cooking, story-telling and craft activities. Ms Bretherton said: “The children were absolutely delighted to finally move in to their new classrooms and their new school. The spacious ‘learning street’ and colourful classrooms definitely have the wow factor. Parents and children are delighted with the new building. We now have an incredible learning environment that we are so proud of. We've also been able to open our doors to the local community and have started to host courses, leadership training and conferences, welcoming over 200 guests to the school.”

Experienced Sika Sarnafil Contractor Ensures Success Of Newcastle’s New College Roof The Sarnavert green roof crowning Newcastle Sixth Form College’s new £22 million facility is flourishing thanks to European Roofing System’s (ERS) expertise. ERS is an experienced Sika Sarnafil registered contractor, which enabled the team to ensure an effective single ply roof system was installed by making two key changes to the original specification to better suit the demands of this particular project.

The brand new building in the heart of the city features a 1,500sq m Sarnavert green roof. But the original specification was for a roof grown from seed that may have restricted growth due to the potential adverse weather conditions on such a high building. Seeds may have been detached from the roof and caused hazards at ground level.

ERS worked closely with main contractor BAM and persuaded the college to opt for a sedum blanket, which was installed by green roof contractor Sky Garden. ERS’ David Murphy comments: “The living element is now successfully established and, with proper maintenance, it will insulate the building as well as bringing wildlife to the city

centre and providing wider environmental benefits for years to come.” The original plans also included a 1,000sq m metal roof covering. But ERS changed this in favour of Sika Sarnafil’s S327-12EL single ply membrane in Light Grey so as to better cope with the metal standing seam detailing.

“Sika Sarnafil membrane is more flexible in its application and overcame some of the more obtrusive detailing that the metal would have caused,” David continues.

“There were also a number of mechanical and electrical roof apertures and these would have required a lot of welding had metal been used. But the detailing was much more easily managed using the heat-welded Sika Sarnafil system.”

The building’s central location also meant that the move to Sika Sarnafil membrane brought a practical benefit. As David concludes: “The 11,000sq m college is right in the middle of the city, making handling materials very difficult due to the site’s restrictive nature. So having the membrane on rolls negated the need for cranes or slings, which was a big benefit. “We believe that both specification changes represent successful decisions made by a very experienced Sika Sarnafil contractor.”

Oxbridge Survival- Hinges On Success Many of our great educational establishments including Cambridge and Oxford Universities, have recognised that their proud history could disappear in an instant without proper protection being installed from the ravages of a fire. The initial fabric of a public building will have been designed in a way, that in the event of a fire, each section of the building can be compartmentalised with strong fire resistant fire doors.

These doors are our front-line soldiers in a fire and they must offer a strong resistance, however, door frames are often overlooked, and with gaps around frames being left and unsealed by fire protective mastic, the fire door could be rendered unable to fulfil its requirements.

The main building of Carleton Community High School in Pontefract burnt to the ground on 19th October 2008. Flexcrete System Selected for Distinguished Lancashire School One of the largest independent day schools in the UK has specified a range of Flexcrete products in order to waterproof internal brickwork walls and provide years of effective protection against water ingress. Products from Flexcrete Technologies Limited have been used at Bolton School, one of the oldest schools in Lancashire with a history stretching back 500 years.

The school’s current buildings were constructed between 1930-1960. The Boys’ Undercroft building connects two sections of the school and is partly located below ground. In order to provide additional classroom space, the school wished to refurbish the Undercroft, however dampness was present on the internal brickwork walls of the structure and a repair and protection system was sought which could withstand these conditions.

A Flexcrete system comprising Monolevel 844SP and Cementitious Coating 851 was specified by Cassidy and Ashton, Bolton School’s Architects, to provide a full tanking system. Monolevel 844SP waterproof screed and pore filler was first applied by trowel at a thickness of 3mm to level the brickwork surface and provide a fair faced finish.

Cementitious Coating 851 was then spray applied in two coats to provide exceptional waterproofing properties, being able to resist 10 bar positive and negative pressure. It also protects substrates from the effects of aggressive acid gases, moisture, chlorides and chemicals. With quick curing times, minimal time required between applications and non-toxic when cured, Flexcrete’s products allowed the work to be carried out on a fast-track basis.

Fastfill, a rapid setting, single component, Portland cement-based structural repair mortar, was also applied as a waterproof fillet to the wall/floor angle.

Fastfill yields a durable, high strength mortar and sets in as little as 10 minutes at 20°C. With a dense matrix able to resist 10 bar water pressure, it has very high diffusion resistance to acid gases and chloride ions. www.flexcrete.com Enquiry No 28

Styrofoam Helps Make Warm Floor For Mosque Renovation Panel Systems, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of Styrofoam insulation, has secured a major new order to upgrade the thermal performance of Shipley Educational Mosque in Bradford.

240m2 of grooved Styrofoam was required to insulate the under floor heating system, which was split into five zones to make the building warmer and to retain more heat.

Working closely with WarmFloors, a specialist underfloor heating installation company, Panel Systems supplied the Styrofoam insulation to the mosque within a very tight timeframe, ensuring there was minimal disruption to visitors to the mosque, which enabled the building to remain open throughout.

A 120-year old former Methodist Church, Shipley Educational Mosque has been undergoing refurbishment for the past five years, and the central heating upgrade was part of the final phase of the renovation.

Although the mosque was previously heated by radiators, the subfloor, which is constructed from suspended timber was very cold underfoot. The new under floor heating plus Styrofoam insulation will help create a more energy efficient, comfortable space for the hundreds of visitors to the mosque each week.

Tarkett Chosen To Help Reduce Injuries Following trials an NHS hospital is hoping to reduce trips and falls in its dementia ward by installing Tarkett flooring. Conducted by the University of Portsmouth, the Hip-Hop Flooring Study discovered that installing Tarkett’s Omnisports flooring was likely to reduce the injuries suffered by older people when falling over due to its shock-absorbent foam backing. Portakabin Delivers Complex Interim Health Project Two Weeks Ahead Of Programme To Help Address Increasing Pressure On A&E Waiting Times Portakabin Hire has delivered a complex interim health building for emergency care in just six weeks – and two weeks ahead of programme – to reduce the pressure on the Accident and Emergency Department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Reducing waiting times for treatment is one of the most urgent priorities for NHS trusts, particularly for emergency care.

The new Surgical Clinical Decisions Unit (SCDU) built by Portakabin for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust provides 24 beds in two wards and ancillary facilities including dirty and clean utilities, nurses’ base, consulting rooms and two en-suite isolation rooms, to allow patients arriving at A&E to be treated more quickly. The interim building will remain in use for around five years. The principal contractor for the scheme is Lend Lease Project Management and Construction.

Other features installed by Portakabin in the new unit include a nurse call system, fire alarms, medical gases, bed-head trunking and access control. It is linked to the hospital’s existing building and there is a full climate control and an air change ventilation system.

Successful Delivery For Henderson Green The South Coast is experiencing a ‘baby boom’ as local Hospitals are giving their maternity units a new lease of life with the help of a leading engineering consultancy.

Henderson Green has been brought on board by Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester, St Mary's Maternity Hospital in Poole and Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton to assist with new build and refurbishment projects.

At RHCH, Henderson Green's engineers worked on a two-phase project which created new birthing pool rooms with en-suite facilities and new Gynaecology theatres - all now handed over and compliant with Health Technical Memorandum.

The refurbished birthing pool rooms required the reconfiguration of the department layout and new services were provided to the pools to ensure they are more efficient in use and now have a 10 minute fill time.

Extensive electrical services were designed for the new Gynaecology Theatres at RHCH, which are now 50% bigger than the former theatres and feature new theatre ventilation plant and equipment, and a new building management system. New IPS and UPS 'clean power' electrical systems were also installed to ensure complete compliance.

A new 250kW chiller, which serves the whole maternity unit including the labour ward, SCBU, day theatres and the gynaecology theatre, has also been installed.

Both schemes at RHCH required substantial work on the medical gas distribution to ensure correct capacity and service provision.

Russ Pitman, Henderson Green’s Managing Director said, “We are delighted to be working on these three highly technical maternity projects and to have successfully completed the RHCH project in Winchester. All of the projects presented their own challenges, however it's extremely rewarding to be designing state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical systems for these important and much-needed maternity units," added Russ.

Henderson Green is also working on a two-phase scheme at St Mary's Maternity Hospital in Poole. The first phase creates a one-wing specialist care birthing area which includes five birthing rooms, three of which provide birthing pool facilities.

The second phase, comprises the refurbishment of the NICU and SCBU departments and will provide 20 cots in total and four isolation rooms.

Closer to home in Southampton, the Consultancy is working at the Princess Anne Hospital on the refurbishment of the Delivery Suite and in addition, M&E designs have been completed for the creation of an Early Pregnancy Unit, which is currently on-site. The unit will provide an upgrade to the existing birthing suite and will feature a new suite of rooms for treatment and assistance at an early stage of pregnancy.

Glazing Solutions Mix Old And New At Iconic Eye Hospital To Form New Biomedical Centre Of Excellence A stunning glazed atrium, glass bridges and curtain walling are bringing together a grade II listed building with a brand new biomedical centre of excellence on the site of the former Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester. For a modern look and all-glass appearance a Spiderglass bolted system will be used on two elevations which form the entrance to an internal atrium. An architectural and practical feature of the development is an external maintenance walkway on each of the four storeys of the new building. An aluminium “veil” will provide access to the outside of the building and also act as brise soleil solar shading which will reduce glare and overheating in the building.

WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT Ian Couldwell, Product Manager at Martek Medical, looks at how operators of public buildings are responding to the risks of sudden cardiac arrest.

“There are around 60,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) in the UK every year.

About half of these are treated by the emergency medical services. However, because what happens in the first 10 minutes is crucial to the survival of the individual, in many cases, it can be too late. Where the SCA takes place can significantly affect whether an individual lives or dies.

Survival across the UK is between 2 and 12 per cent and bystander action in these cases is crucial, as is having access to the right equipment.

SCA occurs when the heart’s normal rhythm suddenly becomes chaotic, which means it can no longer pump the blood effectively and the victim collapses, stops breathing, becomes unresponsive, and has no detectable pulse. Without treatment, victims have only minutes to live. After 10 minutes, the chances of survival are extremely low. With an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site, defibrillation can take place within the vital first three minutes and on average the chances of survival are drastically increased by up to 70%.

Many public buildings have competent first aiders, however the majority don’t have their own Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) which are the only proven method of resuscitating someone following an SCA. Survival rates drop by 10% for every minute without defibrillation. For public buildings which can host thousands of visitors per day, the chances that one day someone will experience SCA is relatively high.

In addition to this there’s the startling statistic that as many as 12 young people die each week as a result of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), this further reinforces the importance of the issue. Of those young people, 80 per cent will have shown no prior symptoms.

These facts certainly alert us to the fact that heart related deaths aren’t restricted to the old and unfit, but in reality can happen to anyone. It’s therefore critical that operators of public buildings are aware of the signs of SCA and have a clear understanding of what actions they need to take to prevent loss of life if such an event happens.

There are a number of considerations in relation to AEDs. Firstly, that the AED should be easily accessible and displayed in a prominent place, where it’s clearly visible, such as an entrance area to a library, school or sports centre.

In larger buildings or sites with multiple buildings, it’s advisable to install more than one defibrillator, to enable quick and easy access. As part of the ongoing health and safety procedure, it’s worth reminding staff on a regular basis where the defibrillator is kept.

In the event of sudden cardiac arrest, it’s essential not to delay as the chances of survival decline at a rate of around 10% with each minute that passes without defibrillation. However, if defibrillation is delivered quickly, survival rates can be as high as 75%.

Although modern defibrillators, like the Lifeline range, are designed to be used without previous user knowledge, training should still play an important role in giving staff greater confidence in the use of the product. Defibrillators, such as the Lifeline AED, are extremely simple to use and guide users through the whole process through voiced instructions.

AEDs can be used on adults and children. One organisation that has recently taken a proactive approach to protecting its students and sports centre users is Dearne Valley College in Rotherham. The college invested in one of our Lifeline AEDs, as Shaun Woodward, Sports Centre Manager at Dearne Valley College, explains: “Fortunately, there’s never been a case of sudden cardiac arrest on our premises but we didn’t want to wait until it happened before taking action because then it’s too late and one young life lost is one too many. We decided to install the AED behind the reception desk in our sports centre, which means that, should an SCA occur, we would be able to respond within four minutes, significantly increasing chances of survival.”

Many A&E doctors have called for defibrillators to be installed in all public buildings and major campaigns of this kind have been run in countries like the USA, where AEDs are much more prevalent. Investment in an AED can mean the difference between saving and not saving a life, which is why local authorities and schools are seeing them as such a worthwhile investment.”

Mapei Paves The Way At Birmingham New Street A complete system of Mapei products has been specified in the flooring build up of new public concourses within Birmingham’s New Street Station. The £600m redevelopment scheme will include a new concourse, exterior façade and entrances. On behalf of principal contractor - Mace – Grants of Shoreditch and UKS Group Ltd prepared and installed 20,000m2 of new flooring. Shepway Civic Centre’s Made Up With Array

Shepway Civic Centre, the offices of Shepway District Council in Folkestone, Kent, has undergone a major refurbishment, which has included specifying fibre bonded carpet tiles from Heckmondwike FB. Almost 350m2 of carpet tiles were supplied in grey from the Array range and purple from the Broadrib range to complement the council’s logo.

The accent colour – purple – was selected to match the council’s corporate colours and to complement the breakout furniture and desk screens, whilst the grey Array carpet tiles provided a neutral base. The layout was designed around the desk plans, breakout space and integral partitioned meeting rooms. The purple accent colour was also used to define the walkways in the building, which was in sharp contrast to the white lockers and pale grey cupboards and workstations. Forbo’s Back To The Floor Announces Lower Bag Threshold Forbo’s Back to the Floor recycling scheme has lowered its collection threshold from two bulk bags to just one bag giving greater flexibility on collections of installation off-cuts of its flooring products.

The new threshold of one bag – around 70m² of Forbo flooring off-cuts is needed to fill it – has been introduced in response to feedback and requests from participants in the scheme, which recycles Forbo’s clean installation off-cuts back into new flooring products.

Given that there is an estimated 10% wastage arising from each new flooring installation, each bag can hold enough off-cuts from a 700m² floor area. This calculation enables contractors to allow for sufficient bags to recycle off-cuts from any project – and especially helps those who could collect this amount over a number of smaller jobs.

Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Matt Charlton said: “By lowering the threshold to one bag, we are facilitating greater take-up of the Back to the Floor scheme across the flooring supply chain, especially for smaller installers and retail outlets. Volumes collected from smaller projects can all go together in one bag, contributing towards their overall sustainable goals.

“The lower threshold has been warmly welcomed by collectors, particularly by those with limited storage space at their premises and who may have struggled to store more bags. It also encourages greater participation, by retailers for example, as this is ideal for their requirements.”

Since its launch in November 2012, virtually the whole flooring portfolio supplied by Forbo can now be collected through its recycling initiative, thus closing the recycling loop. The addition of Tessera Carpet Tiles installation off-cuts in November 2013 widened the sustainable disposal options for flooring companies, enabling 100% of Tessera carpet trim to be reused in the UK. Back to the Floor also collects and reprocesses smooth vinyl, cushioned vinyl flooring, plus Marmoleum and Flotex installation off-cuts for recycling back into new Forbo products.

Matt added: “Enabling collections from just one bag means even more flooring companies can join Back to the Floor, making it easier and more accessible for all.

Collections are backhauled using the existing transport network.”

Scheme members are provided with colour-coded polythene bags and bulk bags, which can be collected from site or dropped off at participating distributors when filled with the specified materials.

Marmoleum is recycled into new flooring at Forbo’s plant in Kirkcaldy, Tessera offcuts are processed at the Bamber Bridge plant near Preston, while the Flotex and vinyl flooring goes back into flooring at the Ripley site.

At Ecobuild 2014 Viessmann presented its power-to-gas solution for addressing the peaks in power generation from weather-dependant renewable energy sources. Viessmann believes its model for storing excess power in the gas grid can pave the way for the UK’s successful transition from conventional to renewable fuels. The inappropriate aluminium framed glazing which had been fitted in the early eighties could not remain. Govette surveyed all of the openings before beginning fabrication using the W20 steel sections, which were hot dip galvanized and given a white polyester powder coat paint finish.

VMZINC Provide Face Of Iconic Thameslink Viaduct London Bridge station, the capital’s oldest railway terminus, presented a major bottleneck through lack of capacity either to increase train frequency or service longer trains. Three different operating companies use it with six lines continuing to Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Blackfriars. Of 86 trains each hour only one Thameslink train could be accommodated in the face of demand for 18.

A new 400 metre viaduct and 1,080-tonne, 70-metre bridge over Borough High Street was therefore built to address the congestion issue. Described by architects Jestico and Whiles as an iconic structure, its distinctive appearance is provided by 2200m2 of VMZINC curved cassette panel facades in pre-weathered QUARTZZINC®. The material was fabricated by EDM Spanwall and installed by specialist architectural metalwork and façade contractor the McGrath Group. The material will retain its appearance for years to come and in doing so requires minimal cleaning and maintenance.

TAPER-LOC System Eases Balustrade Installation At New Olympia Swimming And Leisure Complex, Dundee C.R. Laurence’s TAPER-LOC™ System has facilitated a speedy and simple installation of a new glass balustrade system at Dundee’s eagerly awaited new Olympia swimming and leisure complex.

The brand new complex features a 50 metre competition pool, wave pool, rapid river, dive pool, flumes and fitness suite. The Main Pool incorporates a movable floor and end walls to enable it to be reconfigured into a 25 metre Training Pool for clubs and public lane swimming.

Stannah Modernise Car Park Lifts In Taunton The Old Market multi-storey car park in Paul Street, in the heart of Taunton has been the subject of refurbishment that centres on the three very well-used passenger lifts. The South West England and South Wales branch of national lift company Stannah Lift Services has completed the comprehensive modernisation of a duplex of lifts adjacent to the central stairway and a single lift adjacent to the access on the opposite side of the building. Both the corresponding motor rooms were also refurbished.

‘This project is now completed and I wanted to make you aware of the first class service your team has given in achieving a good result on what was, a very contentious and politically sensitive site. From the outset, your sales advisor showed nothing but confidence in what your company could achieve and what the outcome would be, whilst his colleagues on site carried out the donkey work to make sure things happened in a timely manner with additional technical support in the background smoothed the way.

All three lifts are 6-stop traction lifts, the duplex lifts each catering for 16 persons/1250kg and the single lift being a 13-person/ 975kg capacity.

I visited the site almost every day and was always greeted with a smile and an air of confident, competence which was very reassuring. My special thanks must go to your supervisor who fine-tuned everything, leaving nothing for my Consultant to pick up on - a rare achievement indeed!

Working with South West One Ltd on behalf of Taunton Deane Borough Council, Stannah won the competitive tender, removed old equipment and installed new lifts in just 18 weeks, on time and in budget.

The scope of the work included new traction drive systems with a high performance motor gear unit for each lift, new electronic controllers and totally refurbished lift cars and landing doors. Each lift was completed simultaneously, in order to maintain sufficient public access over the six car park levels.

The duplex pair is cleverly and very neatly linked to one call button, positioned centrally between the two lifts, doing away with the usual confusion of which lift to call and where they both are. The state-of-the-art controller does all the work for you, as the pair of lifts work together to serve the user quickly, efficiently and saves energy by eliminating unnecessary travel. The lift is extremely quiet and the ride within the bright, spacious, brushed steel lift car is exceptional.

Kemperol 2K-Pur Keeps Guildhall Library In Business Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR waterproofing system has been used on a further phase refurbishment of London’s historic Guildhall, this time to provide a new roof surface for the Guildhall Business Library.

The scheme follows the recent roof refurbishment of the Guildhall’s West Wing by main contractor Linbrook Services Ltd and involves overlay of a 300m2 asphalt roof featuring 56 pyramid rooflights. The brief to roofing contractor, A&L Roofing Services, was to complete the project within a six week programme, during which the library had to remain fully operational.

Guildhall selected Kemper System’s Kemperol 2K-PUR system for both projects as its solvent-free formulation enables an odour-free installation, preventing any nuisance odours affecting staff or visitors to the building. The cold liquid-applied system also made it possible to apply the waterproofing membrane precisely to the upstands and drainage channels of the 56 pyramid rooflights, which are located extremely close together in the central area of the roof, whilst seamlessly incorporating the entire roof.

The installation team began by cleaning and preparing the asphalt surface which had begun to blister and split. Kemper System’s Kempertec primer was then applied to stabilise the substrate and provide a chemical key for the waterproofing resin.

Once this had cured, the waterproofing membrane Kemperol 2K-PUR was installed onto the roof. Applied in a single process, the Kemperol resin saturates a non-woven reinforcement fleece and cures to form a monolithic membrane that is UV stable, extremely tough, flexible and tear resistant, that bonds directly to the substrate.

Kemper System’s non-woven reinforcement fleece was cut to size and shape on site to enable the meticulous detailing and protection of the most vulnerable parts of the roof around the rooflights, outlets and upstands as well as the flat roof areas of the roof.

Lee Lane from A&L Roofing Services comments: “Keeping the library open during the six week programme meant that the old rooflights had to remain in place while the job was done before being replaced with new pyramid rooflights at the end.

This made for a very challenging project which could really only be delivered by a cold-liquid applied system that can be applied accurately to the multiple facets and contours of the complex detailing. The fact that the Kemperol 2K-PUR system is eco-friendly as well as odour-free was an added bonus for Guildhall, and kept the refurbishment in line with The City of London’s sustainability aims.”

Swedish architects Marge Arkitekterhe designed the series of thoroughly modern, but low-key, buildings along the city centre water-front to defer to their historic surroundings and prioritise open views of the Royal Palace.

In addition to Nordic Brass – which is now also available pre-weathered - copper alloys include Nordic Bronze and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy with a longlasting golden colour. Other Aurubis Architectural surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper giving either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.

The architect’s concept involved interacting ‘cones’ - units of varying size and number depending on each function and location, generating buildings without specific fronts or backs. Roofs and walls are clad with Nordic Brass, which harmonises well with the stone and stucco facades in the background and creates a unified, sculptural architectural expression. In addition, the Nordic Brass surfaces

Nordic Green and Nordic Blue factory-applied patinas are also available - developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. Here, the process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid blue or green patina colours, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material giving a ‘living’ surface.

Manchester Apartment Block Gets Green Facelift A block of flats owned by Eastlands Homes in east Manchester has been given a green facelift with the installation of a living, ivy wall that runs up the full height of the nine-storey building.

The ivy WallPlanters made by green screen company Mobilane will help to insulate the flats at Worsley Court in Rusholme as well as enhancing the look of the block, which was built in the 60s and is in the process of being refurbished by Eastlands Homes.

Importantly, the ‘green wall’ will also help to reduce pollution levels near the flats; Worsley Court is located on Wilmslow Road, a busy bus corridor with high pollutant levels. In total, nine ivy WallPlanters have been installed by Hedera Screens to cover 100 sq m of the building.

The plants will remove the same number of pollutant particulates from the air as four to five average-sized trees, but take up a fraction of the space. Despite being 44 meters tall, the WallPlanters will be easy to maintain because of a special root zone in the planters that has been designed to give the plants an ideal environment in which to grow. A sophisticated irrigation system supplies water and nutrients as required.

Julian Hammond, investment manager at Eastlands Homes, said that the ivy clad

wall was part of a project to revamp the apartment block, which forms part of a project of three multi-storey blocks owned by Eastlands Homes.

He commented: “One of our key priorities in refurbishing this building was to improve the insulation of the flats. The ivy will help to reduce heat loss from the building in winter, while in the summer months it will help to shield the building from the sun’s rays and keep the interior cool. Boosting Worsley Court’s insulation will have the knock-on effect of reducing energy consumption, helping to make the building more environmentally friendly and reduce energy bills for our customers.

Cleaner air is a further bonus of the project.” Julian added that the luscious, green look of the WallPlanters was also a benefit: “We wanted to make an architectural statement. Mobilane’s WallPlanters were a cost-effective and instant way of lifting the aesthetic appeal of the building.”

Sean Farrell of Mobilane added: “Eastlands Homes emphasised the importance of sustainability in the brief for this project; they were looking for a long term solution to the problem of poor insulation which would also enhance the local area. Our extensive experience of working with public sector organisations has enabled us to deliver the right product for the job and provide the residents of Worsley Court with an appealing, environmentally sound way of improving the energy performance of their building.”

Lanes Group Engineers Help Reduce Flood Risks In Bolton

Lanes Group is helping to identify and resolve widespread potential flood problems in a town in Greater Manchester.

Bolton Council has called in Lanes drainage engineers to carry out CCTV drainage surveys of culverts, followed by cleaning works. The project is being delivered in two phases. Early in 2013, Lanes engineers were commissioned to carry out CCTV drainage surveys of approximately 2,800m of culverted watercourse in 21 locations across the borough, these were selected because they are in low spots in the topography, near critical infrastructure or adjacent to property and principal routes serving the town; none had been inspected previously. www.lanesfordrains.co.uk Enquiry No 75

The Sika Watertight Concrete system was an important ingredient in the construction of the swimming pools in the recently opened Tipton Leisure Centre, which is being run by the Sandwell Leisure Trust. A 25 metre main pool, a teaching pool and corresponding balance tanks, that were installed to maintain a constant water level in the pools, were all constructed using watertight concrete.

Sika Watertight Concrete contains state-of-the-art concrete admixtures that firstly reduce the water/cement ratio, thus increasing the density of the mix and minimising the size, volume and continuity of the concrete's pores and secondly, fill the remaining pores, ensuring a completely watertight finish. Bank Is Fully Protected By Remmers The facade of a Grade 1 listed, four storey high building in London required extensive stone and concrete restoration. Concrete & Corrosion Consultancy Practice was appointed as technical project managers for the refurbishment works.

The ornate stone and cornice banding of the facade were being corroded through excessive weathering. Remmers protective coating systems were chosen to meet the highly demanding specification and multiple facade finishes including Limestone.

Repairs were carried out using Betofix R2, a high build, fast curing concrete repair mortar. Remmers Restoration Mortar was also selected for its ideal restoration and reprofiling properties for masonry as well as ornamental building elements.

Fulham Jetty Becomes Haven For Wildlife After Bauder Green Retrofit Fulham Wharf is a landmark residential and retail regeneration scheme that began in 2013. Included within the approved scheme was the ecological enhancement of an abandoned jetty located on the River Thames, which had been left derelict for over 40 years. The development of this ground-breaking new jetty was designed to provide the local community with an ecological education centre together with a bio-diverse wildlife reserve.

Prior to work commencing on site the project team reviewed the structural adequacy of the existing 1,000m2 concrete jetty with a specialist marine engineering firm and subsequently decided that the jetty would need strengthening to support the new building’s columns. The roof of the new building swoops down to become a continuum with the jetty deck and is covered with a green habitat to provide three distinct environments for wildlife, one on the flat roof, one on the slope and the third on the jetty deck.

Jamie Newborn, lead architect for the project from Fabrik Ltd, stated his delight with the finished project, “Long-term building function and sustainability were key to the architectural vision at Fulham Jetty and the roof served as an integral part of this aim. It stands as a prime example of green roofing, a benchmark for best practice and demonstrates a way of helping the city embrace and encourage its environment and wildlife. The project encountered numerous challenges but they were all solved promptly and efficiently by Bauder who deserve every accolade for this complex project, which they wholeheartedly embraced.”

The flat roof located above the education centre was waterproofed with Bauder’s premium quality reinforced root resistant bitumen membrane before then having their patented sedum blanket installed. On the lower roof 650m2 of the Bauder Bakor hot melt structural waterproofing was installed along with a Bauder wildflower blanket, providing an instant carpet of vegetation.

One of the major challenges for this roof was installing the central sloped section, which required a lot of technical input and exceptional levels of workmanship from roofing contractor Accurate Roofing. This roofing area was waterproofed with the
