Green Light For Nottingham’s New Technology Entrepreneurship Centre Bond Bryan’s latest project at the University of Nottingham has now received planning permission. After completion, which is envisaged for Summer 2016, the Technology Entrepreneurship Centre will house key local businesses as well as national enterprises, such as Big Data & Digital, Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Energy. Companies based in the new Centre will be able to take advantage of the University’s leading centres of excellence in these areas and the ready supply of high quality postgraduate students.

Matt Hutton, lead designer and associate director at Bond Bryan Architects said: “Our brief was to create a building that encourages and supports innovative forms of collaborative working and learning. We envisaged that this would increasingly require more adaptive and flexible spaces that offer a range of potential working, meeting and learning environments ranging

from structured group discussions and facilitated presentation areas, through to more informal self-study areas. A key element of the building proposal has therefore been to develop a concept that offers the ability to create a diverse mix of spaces, from large open plan areas to more cellular offices and specialist practical zones.”

Bond Bryan’s solution has been to create a simple, relatively deep plan building form that makes maximum use of the limited available area on the site to control the height of the building and create efficient floor plates.

An atrium heart- space is cut into this simple form, not only enabling daylight to penetrate the floor plates, but crucially allowing views across the building, visually linking the activities on the different floors and creating a range of spaces; from contained single storey spaces for smaller scale and

cellular activities, through to double and even triple height open plan spaces where necessary. Externally the design seeks to create a distinctive and exciting building typology delivered within an economic solution.

It reflects the historical significance of the site whilst simultaneously replicating the modern contemporary surrounding buildings, providing a high quality statement building for the University.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway, said: “This is outstanding news for the University. The new Technology Entrepreneurship Centre will provide space for start-ups and early stage businesses. RIBA And Draisci Studio Bring A Splash Of Colour To MIPIM UK With Eye Catching Visitor Lounge Installation

The Royal Institute of British Architects’ (RIBA) London region has revealed its ‘RIBA MIPIM UK Visitor Lounge,’ designed by architecture practice, Draisci Studio. The temporary structure WA in place through the duration of MIPIM UK at London’s Olympia.

Draisci Studio, who won a design competition organised by RIBA Competitions, designed the eye-catching and vibrant visitor lounge occupying a large 200m² area in a prime position in the Olympia exhibition hall. Utilising flat pack modular boxes made from honeycomb cardboard that were simple to assemble, the result is a considered space that is welcoming, warm and stimulating for visitors. The design incorporates sustainable and reusable elements, while waste is minimised once the structure is dismantled.

The lounge, which is open to all delegates as a place to take a break from networking or hold a meeting, highlights the partnership between RIBA and MIPIM UK, whilst also promoting a newly published report from RIBA called ‘Client and Architect: Developing the Essential Relationship.’

The special report, one of the legacies of Stephen Hodder’s two-year RIBA Presidency, provides practical advice from clients and architects about how to improve their services and unlock greater value. Marmox Soundboard Brings Harmony To New Neighbours In Kensington Apartment Building The excellent acoustic insulation properties of SoundBoard, manufactured by Marmox, has restored peace and quiet in an exclusive West London apartment building, where two flats were being knocked into one. The refurbishment and integration of the adjoining dwellings has been carried out by main contractor, LDB Construction.

LDB identified the Marmox SoundBoard as an ideal panel to use in overlaying the concrete subfloor, prior to installing electric underfloor heating coils.

SoundBoard offers both acoustic and thermal insulation properties and helps prevent damage to cabling.

This build up was then covered with high quality timber flooring in some rooms while marble tiles featured in the rest. All of the SoundBoard panels measure 600 x 1250 mm, while the two different board thicknesses were used to address a step in the floor height between the adjacent apartments, which had to be brought level when the spaces were linked.

The 8.0 and 12.0 mm thick versions of the boards weigh 1.8 and 1.95 kg respectively while they offer a minimum 17 dB sound reduction and can be specified as part of the Robust Detail, Appendix D solution to impact sound transmission. They are readily cut or shaped with a knife to fit any room layout and in addition to their acoustic performance, SoundBoards provide thermal transmittance figures of 0.35 or 0.39 W/mK for the two different thicknesses. www.marmox.co.uk

James Latham Supplies Walnut To Create Superb Staircase The UK's biggest independent timber and panel product distributor, James Latham, has supplied 2.2m3 of Super Prime Walnut for the construction of an elegant staircase, which is now the focal point of a luxury new build residential property in Louth at the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

GW Clark’s brief was to ensure that the staircase appeared to have glass seamlessly pouring out of the Walnut, with all the joints and aluminium being completely concealed. The result more than achieved this and they also used a lacquered finish rather than oiled as the lacquer is harder wearing and easier to maintain and keep clean.

The Super Prime Walnut was specifically chosen for its wonderful warm appearance to complement the striking panes of glass on the staircase which were selected to create the sense of open space.

In addition, they clad the staircase with the same Walnut planks but decided against matching nosing as they wanted to create a rustic floating appearance.

Lincs Design Consultancy (LDC) were commissioned by the owner of the property to design this luxury home and were briefed to create and build a contemporary and luxurious dwelling.

Richard Clark, owner of GW Clark Joinery, chose James Latham to supply the Walnut and said: “We needed to find a company that we could rely on to provide high quality products and adhere to our timescales. I’ve worked with James Latham for many years and for us they were the natural choice. As well as providing the material on time they were also on hand to offer technical support and knowledge as and when we required.”

The leading, multi-discipline Louth consultancy specialise in creating synergy between architecture, planning and sustainability so they were the perfect choice for this project.

A key part of the design brief - set by LDC and led by Associate, Chris Burkitt - was to construct a contemporary house with outstanding joinery features. GW Clark Joinery of Hull was appointed to focus on the installation of the staircase and after two weeks of meticulous bespoke carpentry, which demonstrated phenomenal craftsmanship, they produced this stunning centrepiece to the home.

Altro Flooring And Wall Cladding On Cutting Edge Of Excellence At New University Science Centre Altro flooring and wall cladding are providing a total, high-level solution of hygiene, safety and contemporary style at a new state-of-the-art science and engineering centre at the University of Wolverhampton.

Designed and equipped to offer cutting-edge teaching and research facilities to future scientists, the new £25m Rosalind Franklin Building has been fitted with Altro WhiterockTM hygienic wall cladding, AltroScreed QuartzTM resin flooring, and Altro Designer TM 25 safety flooring.

The bronze-clad building was designed by architect Berman Guedes Stretton. Their vision was to create a contemporary structure that would support modern learning and revitalise the surrounding area. The architects’ Principal Director, Gary Collins, explains how they realised this vision. “Science and technology is a huge growth area at the university, both in terms of student demand for courses, and also because local industry in that field is on the up. This meant the university wanted to invest in a teaching and research facility that could meet this increasing need and provide the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art experience, both in terms of structure and the resources and equipment inside.

“The products we used needed to meet a number of criteria. Wall cladding for the labs had to be hygienic, easy to maintain and have real impact to complement our design for a modern contemporary space.

Altro Whiterock is the industry standard for this type of requirement, and we and the scientific community know and trust it. We specify it all the time, so this was our number one choice.”

and contemporary in its look. “We went to Coventry Transport Museum with Altro and the main contractor Kier to take a look at the AltroScreed Quartz resin flooring fitted in reception, to see for ourselves how it could work in practice. We were very impressed that it was both tough and attractive, and easy to clean. As part of that same visit we also asked Altro to give some guidance about safety flooring for the labs and upper floors of the Rosalind Franklin Building. The brief was to find a product that was hard-wearing, hygienic, one that could resist chemical spillages and be very safe underfoot, but with a contemporary design that would fit in with our vision.

“They showed us Altro Designer 25 and it ticked all the boxes. We were particularly impressed that it can be hot welded to produce flooring that is impervious to dirt. Plus, at 2.5mm thick, it can stand the test of time against heavy footfall, and resist chemicals in the lab.”

AltroScreed Quartz is a solvent-free system in which blended decorative quartz is bound with clear epoxy resin and finished with clear seal coats.

The product provides a high-strength, chemically resistant decorative floor surface that can be coved and laid to drainage falls. It is available in nominal thicknesses of 4mm to 6mm. It has low slip resistance and is ideally suited to medium-duty production areas, entrance lobbies, offices, shops, circulation areas and laboratories. It has a closed surface texture that reduces dirt retention, making it easy to clean and maintain. The floor was sealed with Altro Screed Seal Rapicure Plus, providing additional slip resistance.

Altro Designer 25 is a 2.5mm thick hard-wearing safety flooring that includes coloured quartz crystals in striking base colour to enhance any interior scheme. Easy to lay, it can be hot welded to produce an unobtrusive and impervious floor, minimising the ingress of dirt and helping to maintain hygiene standards. Coastal Hotel Brings Events And Conferencing Into The 21St Century As part of a modernisation and extension of Headlands Hotel, Torquay, partitioning experts Style was specified to install three Dorma Moveo moveable wall systems, delivering flexibility to the space and maximising the opportunities to host a wide variety of events, meetings and conferences. “The moveable walls replace solid walls and windows”, explains Kim Furness, representative for Duchy Hotels which owns Headlands. “The high quality partitioning systems offer excellent privacy between the divided areas and have increased the potential revenue from the lucrative business and wedding events markets.”

This elegant Torquay hotel is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Torquay on the English Riviera, sitting majestically on the headland looking out to sea. It is set in two acres of magnificent grounds and offers stunning views across Torbay with numerous coastal walks nearby. Working alongside Chillcott Designs, Style was contracted to the moveable walls as part of a significant refurbishment and extension to the Grand Lounge.

Replacing a large external window, Style recommended installing a DORMA Moveo glass partitioning wall, ensuring plenty of natural light throughout the Grand Lounge even when areas are divided. For added privacy, the partitions are fitted with integrated vertical-rising blinds. A simple yet brilliantly clever solution, the blinds rise from the bottom, rather than drop from the top, which means privacy can be provided whilst retaining space above eye level for light.

“This is the first UK installation of Dorma’s vertical-rising blinds’, comments Chris Winwood, Style’s Area Manager for the South. “By raising the blinds just above head height, no-one can see into the room, but light can still come in. It’s one of those obvious ideas that’s really rather ingenious!”

Style also installed two sets of DORMA Moveo semi-automatic partitioning systems, further dividing the Grand Lounge for smaller gatherings. Making it quick and easy to divide an area, all three Moveo partitioning systems incorporate semi-automatic technology. As each panel is slid effortlessly into place, an electrical circuit is initiated, automatically expanding rubber seals to precisely the correct level to create a firm seal for wall strength and maximum acoustic privacy of 50dB for the glass system and 49dB for the other two.

He explains: “All the Accoya® wood frames are integrated in the structure to visually disappear, both from the outside through the natural stone cladding and the timber flooring and from the inside through the suspended ceilings and the incorporated timber furniture or plasterboard cladding to the walls. In the living room the large 6m span of Imago cornerless glazing, with a 1.5m return, becomes one of the most significant points of the

house. The hidden frame enhances the effect of lightness and transparency, framing views of the pool, the big oak tree, the patio and into the valley and the sea.”

The Imago Lift & Slide Doors system also contributed to helping the property reach Passivhaus standards. To minimise any possible thermal bridge, Climatech GRP composite thresholds are laid on cellular glass board insulation, achieving a high mechanical strength, while the top and the side of the fixed glass frame are fully framed by insulation.

Impressive New Glassolutions Look For Rochdale Interchange A recently opened landmark transport interchange in Rochdale which features extensive structural glazing by GLASSOLUTIONS has caught the attention of the industry’s leaders by picking up a string of awards in recognition for its architectural and engineering excellence. Glazing for the internal and external façades and shop frontages for the Rochdale Transport Interchange was designed by GLASSOLUTIONS to create a frameless, glassto-glass appearance and achieve visual consistency across the project.

GLASSOLUTIONS was brought in at the planning stages of the £11.5m project. They introduced Wicona, who put forward the WICTEC 50SG option, based on one single system and common components, tooling and processes to simplify specification and reduce time and costs in fabrication and installation.

The outer glass was 6mm SGG PARSOL® grey body tinted toughened safety glass, which provides essential solar control to help deliver a comfortable internal environment. The cavity is 20mm air filled with Wicona SG toggle

insert. Inner glass was 9.5mm SGG STADIP PROTECT® clear laminated safety glass. The project was funded jointly by the Department for Transport, Transport for Greater Manchester and Rochdale Borough Council.

The building was designed to be highly transparent, with an enclosed single concourse creating a dramatic cornerstone feature to the town for visitors and daily users. The project has successfully delivered an enhanced experience for users, with exceptional passenger facilities, and is one of Europe’s first hydroelectric powered transport interchanges.

It has since been recognised with the award for Lancashire Regional Project of the Year at the North West Regional Construction Awards, and the award for Best Medium Project at the North West Structural Awards, organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers. CMS Windows Provide Fyne Views To Scottish Retreat A luxury west coast of Scotland retreat has opened a new spa and leisure complex featuring windows, doors and curtain walling manufactured and installed by CMS Window Systems.

The £10 million development by Portavadie Estates includes a 16-metre indoor pool, outdoor spa pools, two Scandinavian saunas, fully equipped gymnasium and spa, café and the largest heated outdoor infinity pool in Scotland.

The state-of the-art spa and leisure centre powered by local sustainable technology on the shores of Loch Fyne, Argyll, was designed by architects Stewart Associates, and complements the existing marina development and leisure offering.

The glazing specification by CMS ensures the new facilities enjoy stunning floor to ceiling views across Loch Fyne and beyond to the Isle of Arran, bringing nature right into the facility and flooding the building with light.

CMS manufactured and installed all the thermally enhanced curtain walling and windows for the building envelope – these were created using a combination of the advanced SCW+ system, Senior Hybrid Systems and the SPW600 system. The project also involved installing Metal Technology P50 louvres, colour coordinated in RAL 7015 with a matt finish.

CMS was appointed by construction company and main contractor Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd following a competitive tender. Euan Clark, Commercial Director at Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd said: “As the design evolved, CMS were a key part of our tender discussions, providing cost and specification advice against client and design team proposals.

“Communication was key to the success of the project and CMS was very good at keeping us informed of any variations including costs, which we were able to pass to the client’s representatives and keep them aware of any cost implications against design changes.

“CMS was extremely collaborative on this project, working well with us and the design team. Having an effective supply chain – with each company meeting their objectives – played a huge part in the successful delivery of this fantastic development.”

Romag’s BIPV Chosen For Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Romag’s Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) panels have been installed as part of new £4.8million kennel block development at the Battersea Dog & Cats Home in London, which was opened by Her Majesty The Queen earlier this year.

This new concept in building integrated photovoltaics combines renewable energy generation with a glass laminate design to enable the PV cell to blend sympathetically into the fabric of the existing building.

The PV system was integrated into a canopy running the entire 145m length of the new kennel block, with the canopy incorporating several changes of height along the length of the installation. Not only were the BIPV panels able to meet load requirements, the size of the panels allowed them to be seamlessly incorporated into the architect’s initial design brief and vision.

Daylight Leads In Leeds College The new campus for Leeds College of Building was designed by architects Fuse Studios as the result of winning a major design competition. Using its skills to seamlessly integrate architecture and interiors, Fuse has fulfilled the College’s brief to promote the use of modern materials and construction methods, so the new project becomes an educational demonstration in its own right, as well as supporting BREEAM excellence.

Materials specified included the diffused daylighting Kalwall cladding and roofing system.

Consistent with the winning design was a desire for internal transparency between all areas and a naturally-lit teaching environment which would not generate excessive solar heat gains. At the same time, it was recognised that too much glazing could distract the students, so the solution was to use translucent Kalwall.

ESG Help To Create The Perfect Penguin Viewing Experience This summer saw Bournemouth Oceanarium open their new £1.6m penguin exhibit. This ambitious project is the largest expansion in the centers history and was over 5 years in planning. The build saw the size of the center increase by over a third with the centre piece of the new building, a penguin beach enclosure that allows visitors to get up close to the new Humboldt penguins on display.

The designers wanted to allow all visitors to the exhibit to have as clear a view as possible to the penguins on display, in particular the thousands of small children that pass through the center. Traditionally the walls of such an exhibit were made of a solid material meaning children had to be lifted to the top of the wall to see the display. The solution was to use toughened laminated glass balustrades to line the perimeter, allowing even the smallest visitors to clearly see the penguins on display.

When glazing contractors Beaumont Rose were deciding on the specification of glass, they knew that it had to be strong enough

to prevent breakages that could injure visitors or the penguins on display, as well as being able to remain as free as possible from general scratches caused by the 250,000 plus annual visitors allowing for the best possible viewing experience. ESG were happy to supply 21.5mm clear toughened laminated panels to fit into Beaumont Roses bottom rail fixings, as well as a notched and drilled panel to create a gate for the keepers to enter the enclosure.

Stannah - Ace Tailor Of Lifts For Tight Spaces When it comes to tailoring passenger lifts to fit tight-squeeze spaces, Stannah Lift Services was the lift company of choice for Coastal Housing Group in their Bethesda Court social housing complex in Swansea, Wales.

The Stannah team removed the existing 4 hydraulic passenger lifts and separate motor rooms (installed in 1994 by other lift manufacturers) and replaced them with gearless-traction, motor room-less, 6-person passenger lifts.

Critically, each 450kg lift had to be tailored to fit exact shaft dimensions, maximising the space available. With a 5mm tolerance, design and manufacture had to be spot on – which it was, and all achieved within 16 weeks.

Gloucester Opens Its Gateway To Mapei’s Eco Products At Britain’s Greenest Services A Mapei decorative floor system has been installed at Gloucester Services Southbound, which is an environmentally-friendly service station on the edge of the Cotswolds. The main building is constructed from local stone and timber, and features an arched grass-covered roof set to receive BREEAM excellent rating. Three individual Mapei products were specified, alongside porcelain tiles and vinyl sheeting, throughout a 1,324m2 area.

Designed by AFL Architects, all floor works were carried out by Polished Concrete Designs for main contractor, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. Gloucester Services Southbound is the second phase to the Gloucester Services Northbound known as ‘Britain’s greenest motorway services’.

This joint project was delivered by Gloucestershire Gateway Trust and Westmorland Limited (Westmorland Family are also behind Tebay Services in Cumbria).

Granite Transformations Franchise Conference Previews Brand Transformation Granite Transformations, the home improvements brand owned by the international Trend Group, held its most important and best-attended UK franchise conference ever, last month. Franchise owners and their partners from around the national network, prospect franchisees, head office support staff from Tunbridge Wells and senior corporate executives from Florida, including Trend CEO Andrea Di Giuseppe, all took out time for the conference, held at Sarah Beeny’s magnificent Rise Hall.

The event provided the launch pad for the UK element of a major global rebranding programme, which will see the small yet significant brand transition from ‘Granite Transformations’ to ‘Trend Transformations’, first through a year-long pilot project, then a subsequent national rollout. The Group CEO offered his personal vision for the new brand, with its wider product portfolio, while senior directors from top rebranding agency, FutureBrand, outlined the practicalities.

British Timber – The Truly Sustainable Solution Tom Barnes of Vastern Timber discusses the many advantages of choosing British timber and takes a look at three areas where Britain leads the way.

It is widely understood that wood is amongst the most sustainable of building materials. The very process of growing trees delivers numerous environmental benefits, and once harvested a tree can be replaced simply by planting another. Once a timber product has reached its end-of-life, it is often reusable by chipping or pulping, and if not, timber is totally biodegradable.

However, it is not always fully appreciated that there are different degrees of sustainability when talking about timber. Issues such as the management of woods and forests, as well as the carbon footprint incurred during transport over long distances all impact on the degree of sustainability contained in a piece of wood. And of course there are the social communities that are either impacted by bad forestry practice, or which are reliant on the timber industry.

By choosing British timber you know that you are choosing the most sustainable option. The UK woodland and forestry industry has excellent standards and in choosing British timber you are helping to support further improvement as well as supporting communities that rely on the timber industries.

Sustainability is not the only advantage to be gained from choosing British timber, especially hardwood. Oak remains the most iconic of British hardwoods and has been used in construction for centuries. Original oak beams continue to support structures more than 500 years old.

The traditional popularity of English oak can largely be explained by the availability of the trees and durability of the wood. As a natural building material, oak is extremely hard to destroy; large sections will resist fires intense enough to melt metal and will flex to accommodate the natural movements of a building.

English oak is considered to be the strongest of the oaks because it has a more interlocking grain than oak from continental Europe, which is characteristically more mild and straight grained. While imported oak can often be cheaper, there is a sustainability price to pay if the wood is imported. There is also a great deal of difference in design flexibility.

Local British sawmills are easy to access, and as well as the option to inspect timber and cuts before choosing, the designer will benefit from more flexibility in cuts from their local sawmill, especially curved and shaped wood. Of the other native hardwoods, sweet chestnut is proving increasingly popular for external cladding.

British sweet chestnut cladding is hard-wearing, strong and durable, and relatively light when compared to other hardwood cladding, making it ideal for exterior use. Additionally, sweet chestnut is known to be a very stable timber, resulting in less movement, distortion or splitting. It has a similar golden colour to oak, but with stronger grain and occasional dark brown mineral streaks and will weather to a natural silver colouring if left untreated.

Vastern Timber is also a key partner in a team developing the first commercially available thermally modified British timber. Thermal modification involves using intense heat to change the structural properties of wood. The combination of high heat and steam ‘cooks’ the sugars and resins out of the wood, leaving nothing for mould, fungus and bacteria to feed on, resulting in significantly higher levels of durability than non-modified timber. The thermal modification process involves no chemicals and does not rely on impregnating the timber. Unlike most other treatment processes, thermal modification reaches to the core of each piece, rather than simply treating the surface.

Depending on the intended use of the thermally modified hardwoods, both the temperature and the modification period are varied. For external use, where durability is important, the wood is ‘cooked’ at a higher temperature and for a longer period.

The thermal modification process results in products that are significantly more stable than non-modified timbers, meaning they expand and contract less when faced with changes in ambient temperature and humidity, making them a superior solution for a range of uses. Additionally, the superior stability results in significantly less cupping and distortion when used outside. The full modification of thermally modified hardwood allows for cutting and re-working without a loss of performance and without the need for additional treatment.

An Ace Idea - With The Potential To Solve The World’s Housing Shortage An innovative modular building system which has the potential to plug the shortfall in low-cost housing and schools, not just in Britain but across the world, is using expanded polystyrene (now known across Europe as airpop™) at the centre of its unique patented design. Rinnai Welcomes Advent Of ‘Transparent’ Energy Labelling Rinnai, designer and manufacturer of the Infinity range of continuous flow gas fired water heaters, welcomes the implementation of the ERP and Energy Labelling Directive on 26 September as its expansive range of water heaters can satisfy a complete range of load profiles and all units are A RATED. On 26 September 2015 The Energy Related Products (ERP) Directive, incorporating Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives for water heaters (Lot 2) comes into force, meaning that water-heating products sold in the UK will need to meet minimum energy performance criteria in order to be legally placed on the market, and will require an energy label.

“The Energy Labelling Directive offers transparency to specifiers, installers and end users who will now have a clear guide for choosing the most efficient units available,” says Tony Gittings, Managing Director of Rinnai UK. “Rinnai now brings to market the most expansive range of A-rated appliances, that have load profiles suitable for both domestic and commercial projects. Our appliances range from load profile(s) for small domestic models to XXL sized commercial units,” says Gittings.

Rinnai is also set up to offer installers expert help with system labelling.

The onus of labelling in this scenario falls on the installer, rather than the manufacturer, who will be responsible for system labels for those installations that combine a water heater with renewables, for example.

Rinnai has been working well ahead of the deadline for ERP and took delivery of its coveted A-rated labels in July. To get to that stage, Rinnai had all its appliances tested twice. The first test was carried out at the Rinnai headquarters in Japan, where units underwent rigorous interrogation by the company’s expert engineers and then again by notified body who awarded the rating.

“And don’t forget, the A-rating applies to a unit in use under specific test conditions – ie when fuel is being used. As an ‘A-rated’ Rinnai unit only uses fuel when water is being drawn it doesn’t suffer any standing losses, making the system more efficient than any stored hot water system.

“In effect, an A-rated Rinnai continuous flow water heater, will always have an advantage in efficiencies over A-rated storage systems, as there is no standing losses or any need to re-circulate and re-heat water to avoid stratification,” Gittings explains.

When these Rinnai water heaters are paired with solar thermal technology and the latest intelligent controls are used for ultimate renewable heat optimisation, even higher efficiencies can be achieved, Gittings adds.

Prestige Johannesburg Office Development Stays Cool With SE Controls A new prestige office development in Sandton, Johannesburg is using a combined smoke and natural ventilation system, involving automatic window vents in the building’s elliptical glazed central tower, which is actuated and controlled by an integrated solution from SE Controls Africa.

As part of this process, the building’s 12 storey elliptical central tower features a fully glazed external facade within an aluminium lattice structure, which incorporates an automatic window and vent opening system to provide natural ventilation and overnight cooling, as well as smoke ventilation in the event of a fire.

To achieve the necessary level of versatility and control required for the automated vent system, SE Controls supplied 49 SECO N 24 25 twin chain actuators with a 350mm stroke length together with 7 SHEVTEC® control panels and manual control points, which were networked using the company’s OSLink network cards. An external weather station was also installed to provide an information feed on ambient conditions into the system.

In normal operation, the windows open and close automatically, to provide cooling and a supply of fresh air, but in the event of a fire this is over-ridden and vents are opened to allow smoke to be vented, enabling escape routes to be kept smoke free.

Trend Clears The Air At Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust Reducing hazards to patients and staff from airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms is a fundamental requirement within hospital operating theatres. So when Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust wanted to make its ventilation systems more efficient and effective it asked Trend Control Systems to configure its Building Energy Management System (BEMS) to maintain air quality and save money.

Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s operating theatres were being ventilated even during long periods when they were empty. ‘Setting back’ is traditionally considered the best way to maintain high levels of air quality and reduce the potential for airborne contaminants, dust and harmful microorganisms to proliferate. It involves lowering the temperature and reducing the supply and extract air volumes by a small amount when the theatre is not required. This ‘standby mode’ also allows the theatre to be brought up to full operating conditions in a relatively short period of time.

However, Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 (HTM 03-01): Specialist Ventilation for Healthcare Premises Part A, Design and Validation, section 6.23, states, ‘Many ventilation systems may be completely shut down when the area served is not in active use. Alternatively, where there is a need to maintain a background condition, the ventilation output can be reduced by setting back the system.’

With this in mind, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust contacted Trend to discuss how its existing BEMS could help transition from setting back to a full shut down position when the operating theatres at Rochdale Infirmary and Fairfield General Hospital Bury were not in active use.

Of most concern was the fact that once the ventilation system was switched off the theatre would have no way of removing any environmental contaminates caused by people entering and leaving the rooms. Similarly, under certain environmental conditions, any warm moist air trapped inside the ductwork after the system is turned off could become a source of contamination.

The team and Trend proposed a plan that would address the Trust’s health and safety concerns, while initiating significant energy savings and operational efficiencies. As contaminates usually come from people entering and leaving the operating theatres, it was important to make sure that the system is activated whenever traffic exceeds certain defined parameters. Peter Moore, Key Account Manager at Trend, states, ‘We

decided to install passive infrared (PIR) movement detectors that could be fully integrated with the BEMS. To address the cleaning issue, we suggested that the ventilation system should run at no less than half speed prior to undertaking any tasks and remain active for a period after completion.’

The BEMS has been configured to fully control how the air handling units (AHUs) operate. The AHUs have an occupancy time profile in conjunction with the PIR technology in some instances, but purely PIR control in others – the latter scenario is gradually being introduced across all the operating theatres, as it has been found to be more effective.

Where the AHU has a time profile in place, it maintains the operating theatres as occupied for that set period – outside of this period the PIRs maintain the space as occupied when movement is detected. After a period of 30 minutes where no movement has been detected outside of the occupied time period, the AHU then shuts down. However, any subsequent movement detected by the PIR reactivates the AHU for a minimum period of 30 minutes. In locations that only have PIR technology, the AHU is activated for a minimum of 30 minutes from the start of each detected movement.

It was also felt that operating the system in conventional set back mode in the winter months would be useful in preventing water systems within the plant freezing and stopping ice forming on filters. Meanwhile, limiting the minimum temperature inside the theatre to 15°C minimises the risk of condensation forming and allows the room to be restored to full operating conditions within a reasonable time.

Hauraton Drainage Systems At Vangarde Shopping Park, Monks Cross, York The award winning Vangarde Shopping Park located a mile or so North East of the historic city centre of York opened for business in April 2014. The Park has over 31,527m² of retail and leisure space, including an 8,556m² John Lewis, a 9,300m² Marks & Spencer and a 2.790m² Next outlet. The Marks & Spencer store is one of the retailer’s greenest to date, with a 60,000 litre retaining tank for recycled rainwater, two green living walls, totalling over 167m² designed to attract wildlife and retain heat, electric car charging points, refurbished trolleys. The store is also part-powered by 600 solar panels - a first for Marks & Spencer.

With 1,340 free car parking spaces, extensive pedestrian and large service areas, the design of the surface water drainage scheme was a major consideration for main contractor, Caddick Limited. Over 1,700metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® drainage channel were eventually installed by ground workers Howard Civil Engineering Limited during the three month installation process.

1,500metres of RECYFIX® PLUS 100, 150 and 200 channels fitted with Class D400 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings secured with bar and bolt locking were used in the main car park areas. The size installed depended on the areas to be drained – for example, the larger sized channels were installed in the 80metre runs so fewer outlets were needed. The paved pedestrian areas

were drained with over 200 metres of RECYFIX® PRO 100 drainage channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® gratings. The material PA-GF, used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight.

Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The RECYFIX® PRO and PLUS channel component is made from tough, 100% recycled Polypropylene Polyethylene (PP-PE). Specialist loading bay equipment and industrial door manufacturer Stertil Dock & Door Products has installed a series of 11 hydraulic dock levellers for a worldwide logistics company.

As a top ten global provider of supply chain solutions, the logistics company operates a UK network of strategically located ambient and temperature controlled warehousing facilities. The company’s Amber Park warehouse in South Normanton, Derbyshire occupies 200,000 sq ft and offers 21,000 pallet locations.

As part of an upgrade to the site, it was decided to replace 11 outdated levellers with an installation of Stertil XP 2521 hydraulic dock levellers.

Between 60 and 80 rigid lorries and articulated vehicles with trailers are loaded and unloaded in a typical working day at the Amber Park site.

These operations are undertaken safely and swiftly by the 6000kg capacity XP 2521 dock levellers which feature an ingenious telescopic extending lip. Simple, precise positioning of this lip onto the rear of a vehicle’s deck enables loading by pallet truck right up to the rear doors thereby ensuring maximum use of available space.

Although the original dock levellers had been installed by another supplier around 15 years ago when the site was built, they have been maintained for many years by Stertil Dock Products as part of an ongoing maintenance contract. Trespa Sets The Right Tone For Uni Student Block A city-centre student block for Liverpool University has been clad in more than 5000 sq m of innovative high performance laminate cladding that provides a clean-cut modern appearance while echoing the façades of nearby historic buildings.

Crown Place is a 1500-bed student accommodation project in three blocks grouped around a central courtyard. Popular with students because of its proximity to the city centre and the University’s main teaching blocks it welcomed its first intake last September.

Drawing on a materials palette of the surrounding University buildings, Manchester-based architects Lewis and Hickey opted for Meteon® cladding panels from Trespa UK for the inner elevations of the blocks which face onto two central plazas that act as communal areas from which the buildings are accessed.

“The façades of the three blocks facing outward onto the street were to be in a GRC, reflecting the stonework of the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral and the Reilly Building. The courtyard facades were also to be of the same tone, maximising the light reflectance to illuminate the courtyard bedrooms”, says architect Philip

Daniels. “Trespa® panels were the logical choice for the internal courtyard facades, offering a cost-effective option that maintained dimensional and aesthetic stability over time, and would weather well.”

The design of the Trespa® facades, using approximately 2000 panels, was to use irregular panel sizes with staggered joints providing a softer, more organic effect, again referencing the stonework of the university buildings.

A graduation of tones, using four colours, was also selected, starting with darker panels in Mid Grey at the base of the building, and becoming progressively lighter with Silver Grey and Winter Grey and eventually White towards the roofline.

Daniels explains: “This plays on the natural distribution of light, and gives the perception of the courtyard becoming wider at the top, avoiding a ‘canyon’ effect. The panels were riveted to vertical aluminium rails and rivets were capped with colour-coordinated caps which were imperceptible from ground level once the building was complete.”

Trespa® Meteon® is a decorative, high-pressure compact laminate with an integral surface manufactured using Trespa’s unique in-house technologies that utilise dry-forming and electron beam curing. It is the company’s leading family of architectural panels for façades and exterior applications, created – as with all Trespa products - in close collaboration with architects, designers, installers, distributors and end-users.

The panels, 8mm thickness were specified for the Liverpool University project and perform exceptionally well outdoors with neither sun nor rain having any significant effect on the surface. www.trespa.com

Omnie Ground Source Heat Pumps Serve Six Bathroom Rural Redevelopment The redevelopment of a former lock keeper’s cottage in Somerset, being replaced by a 850 square metre spacious modern family home, is making use of two ground source heat pumps from Omnie to provide not just space heating, but also hot water for the property’s six bathrooms, kitchen and utility.

The site isn’t connected to mains gas and the heat pumps provide a cost effective way to provide low temperature heating without having to bring in mains gas or rely on fossil fuels or high temperature heat sources. The design of the building is very contemporary and offers large open plan areas which is ideally suited for UFH and low temperature heating.

Because of the properties size/ building form and high specification of insulation, glazing the heating loads are low and therefore suited for efficient heat pump design operating at 35-40 degreesº flow temperature. This is further enhanced by a PV array, which provides electricity to the heat pump operation storing the energy in the large buffer and hot water cylinder.

The architect has made good provision for a large plant room and service access to different parts of the building, this is key to integration of good heating system, which the clients are very impressed with.

With five bedrooms and six bathrooms, demand for hot water is potentially high and the pair of Omnie SWC 140S ground source heat pumps are suitably sized to meet the heating and hot water loads, harvesting free warmth from pipe runs laid across an adjoining field. www.omnie.co.uk

Wetrooms UK were approached by Octagon Developments to supply and install wetroom systems and waterproofing solutions into the Master Bathroom, Gym and three further En-Suites at the luxury house in Virginia Water. All wetrooms were to be installed onto solid floors.

Wetrooms UK recommended the installation of Linear Screed Drains into each of the wet areas of the development, capable of coping with flow rates of up to 29 L/min. Falls were created within the screed before the Linear Screed Drains and solid linear grills, manufactured by Wetrooms UK, were installed into the required floor or wall position within each bathroom.

RIW Tilesafe waterproof membrane was applied to the floor and wall junctions within each of the shower areas and across the floor area, finishing 1 metre outside the shower area. RIW FWM was then applied full height to the shower walls, linking to the RIW Tilesafe membrane, to prevent any water penetration. www.wetroomsuk.co.uk

Schöck Solution Combines Architecture With Horticulture The striking façade of this building in Berlin is the concept of Sergej Dott, a locally-based pop art painter who chose medicinal herbs to represent the building’s use as a major medical centre.

The Treptow Medical Centre, named after the district in which it is located, is a 19th century listed building and recent refurbishment work has seen the interior transformed into twelve surgeries and a pharmacy. The final flourish of the restoration activity is the addition of the pop art herbs, each one metre in diameter, up to twelve metres high and 600kgs in weight, all grouped around three sides of the building.

To incorporate them into the structural design, additional steel beams had to be installed inside the building at varying floor levels and Lorenz Linnhoff, whose engineering firm carried out the structural planning for the building comments: “The optimum solution for fastening the giant flowers to the building envelope was the Isokorb KST, which made it possible to transfer the load of the flower installation via the steel beams to the load-bearing building”.

The KST has been developed to create thermal breaks in steel structures, where the modules are used to transfer tensile forces and pressure/shear forces. With this application the product is used only for the latter purpose, as on this occasion it has to perform a structural function rather than ensure thermal partition.

Each flower is connected by two KST modules at the top of the stalk and their modular capability meant that off-site prefabrication was possible, helping to reduce on-site costs. Two head plates were welded to the stalks off site and another two head plates attached to the main steel structure with the KST modules bolted to them.

Then flower stalk was then lifted into position and the two plates simply bolted to the exterior connections of the KST units. The community arts and culture scene in Treptow wil benefit too, as each of the herbs is to be sponsored, with the proceeds donated to various art institutions.

Portakabin Group Awarded UK’s Largest Ever Off-Site Contract In The Education Sector – £44M Riverside Schools Campus The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham has awarded what is believed to be the largest ever off-site contract in the education sector, to the Portakabin Group – a £44 million project to deliver an innovative threeschool campus.

The 23,000sqm Riverside Schools scheme is one of the largest school projects now under construction and will provide additional places for one of the fastest-growing school-age populations in the UK. The campus will have capacity for around 2,700 children from 0-19 – integrating provision for nursery, primary, special needs, secondary, and sixth form.

The Portakabin Group is main contractor for this pioneering project.

The contract has been awarded by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD) via the Council’s local education partnership (LEP), Thames Partnership for Learning. The project is procured by LBBD and funded by the Education Funding Agency (EFA). The architects are Surface to Air and the three free schools on the campus will be operated by the multiacademy trust, Partnership Learning.

Constructed using a Yorkon off-site solution for the curriculum areas, the scheme will accommodate a 10-form entry secondary school, a 630-place primary school, a special educational needs (SEN) school, and a nursery. It will also offer extended provision outside school hours and for wider use at weekends and in school holidays to contribute to the local community.

Commenting on the project, Roger Leighton, Chief Executive of the multiacademy trust, Partnership Learning, said, “We have had a very good firsthand experience of the Portakabin Group’s off-site solutions as our schools currently occupy two earlier phases on a site near the planned Riverside Schools campus. We have been really impressed with the quality of the finished buildings, the speed of construction, and just how far off-site technology has now advanced.”

“The Portakabin Group makes good use of architectural design to the benefit of the users and to enhance the internal environment. As an example, our strong preference is for 75sqm classrooms which are significantly larger than the 56sqm classrooms required by the Department for Education. With careful design and planning, use of a Yorkon off-site solution gives us the flexibility to achieve this and for almost the same budget – which is a very key benefit.”

The use of off-site construction will significantly reduce the programme time. The project has been scheduled to complete the primary and SEN facilities at an earlier stage, in time for the start of the 2016/17 academic year to meet the urgent demand for places in the Borough. The rest of the campus will be completed late Spring 2017.

The Riverside Schools scheme is being developed in the Barking Riverside regeneration area, which is close to Barking town centre and part of the Thames Gateway development. Early phases of substantial housebuilding have already been completed with further plans for 12,000 new homes increasing the need for education provision. The overall vision is for the creation of a vibrant new community with design-inspired public spaces and amenities.

Marmox Multiboards Feature In Goodenough Bathroom Contract The total refurbishment of 64 guest bathrooms within a club, located on one of London’s most fashionable garden squares, has featured the use of Multiboards, manufactured by Marmox Limited to offer an ideal backing board for wetroom environments.

In total Marmox supplied some 1000 square metres of Multiboard in the 2500 x 600 (Longboard) and 1250 x 600 (Standard board) options; at 12.5 and 6mm thickness respectively. The upgrade of the en-suite bathrooms within the Goodenough Club was completed over a 19 week period earlier this year.

The joints between the boards were covered using Marmox self-adhesive waterproof tape which enables contractors to tile directly over the top; though in this instance the tilers opted to apply a thin skim of the adhesive across the entire surface. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS and offer a range of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof.

They are both light to handle and easy to cut, while still being able to carry substantial loadings if employed as part of a flooring build up. They further offer good acoustic as well as thermal insulation performance. www.marmox.co.uk

Greyfriars Colchester – Hotel Of Grande Luxe Built in the late 18th century on the site of a Franciscan Monastery, GreyFriars was an extraordinary family home with a stunning Georgian façade. After a few changes of use, it went up for sale in 2007.

A period of several years followed, during which the new owner, OMC Investments Limited, sought planning permission to convert this Grade II Listed building into a luxury hotel. A key issue to resolve was the problem of the old windows, not only causing heat loss, but admitting the ingress and egress of noise.

Set to become a hotel of grand luxe, it was of paramount importance to provide the guests with a peaceful and comfortable stay.

Secondary glazing can virtually eliminate drafts trapping an insulating layer which reduces heat loss. It also has the benefit of noise reduction; Selectaglaze’s products can attain sound reductions to 45dB when fitted with an air gap of 100mm.

Selectaglaze fitted over a hundred units using nine different systems. Some of the windows were curved which needed to be carefully designed and some carefully treated to allow access to some beautiful original stained glass for cleaning and maintenance.

The majority of the windows were fitted with 6mm toughened glass, but in one particular area 10.8 Stadip Silence was used for noise containment to prevent disturbing people outside of the building. Brett Landscaping Assistance Helps To Challenge Perception Of Space At Hayes Development A recently constructed retail development in Hayes, West London has had its striking public access area and car park design fulfilled using a combination of high quality paving products, manufactured and supplied

by Brett Landscaping.

The new development’s pathways, access and parking areas have been created using original designs by leading landscape architects, the terra firma consultancy, in a project designed to change conceptions of what a car park and public access area can typically be. A combination of paving materials from Brett Landscaping, including Piatto in Dark Granite, Silver Granite and Yellow Granite, have been installed.

“With the vast space they often occupy, car parks can be perceived as inhospitable places, so at Hayes, we wanted to create a different feel; incorporating planting and visual interest into the design and reducing the interpretation of a big car park to a more ‘human scale,’” explains Alison Galbraith, terra firma’s Associate Director. “To accomplish this, we designed a landscape whereby the main tarmacadam was ‘broken up’ using 300m² of Brett Piatto Yellow Granite around the parking bays, together with tree planting to help challenge the perception of the space.
