Blending new with old has been a key challenge with updating and upgrading the property. In addition to repairing and cleaning the entire building’s façade, ISG has constructed a new brickwork section and extended the main entrance, creating two additional sandstone pillars to match existing architectural elements. New intricate metal work screens have been installed as well as locally manufactured hand-crafted external railings. Internally, ISG has manufactured a matching staircase to provide access from the fourth to sixth floor levels and all windows have been repaired and restored.

The stunning entrance foyer incorporates many reinstated period features, with a hardwood floor, decorative plasterwork, chandeliers and a wrought iron balustrade. The sumptuous private members lounge boasts wooden panelling, hardwood floor and has been fitted out to exacting standards with a luxury high-end specification. A commercial kitchen has been installed on the lower ground floor, with two satellite kitchens at ground and sixth floor levels to service the bar, restaurant and apartments. Two passenger lifts and a further service lift have also been introduced into the building.

To provide The Kohler Co. with advanced marketing opportunities ahead of completion, ISG fitted out two show apartments to an exceptionally high standard. Each apartment has a different design theme and enables prospective homeowners to visualise how the accommodation will work for their individual requirements. The remaining 24 apartments have been finished to a ‘white box’ specification, complete with high-end fitted kitchens, luxury bathroom facilities and advanced A/V systems, with hidden ceiling mounted speakers.

ISG Unveils Exquisite Luxury Homes At The Iconic Hamilton Grand ISG has successfully completed a £15.6 million redevelopment of the iconic Hamilton Grand building in St. Andrews for The Kohler Co. - owners of the five star Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa. The landmark property has undergone a stunning transformation into one of Scotland’s most exclusive residential addresses. Hamilton Grand boasts 26 stunning apartments in two, three and four bedroom configurations, together with a private residents' lounge and courtyard garden and sixth floor roof deck. ISG has also created a stylish public bar and grill that is set to become a firm favourite with visitors to the home of golf.

Built in 1895 as The Grand Hotel, this iconic building, which overlooks the Old Course in St Andrews, is the second most photographed building in the world of golf after the R&A headquarters. Then as now, the property was the height of luxury - the first building in Scotland to have a pneumatic elevator running between guest floors as

well as hot and cold running water in every bathroom, setting the benchmark for the ultimate in hospitality. During the Second World War the building saw service as the training headquarters for the Royal Air Force and most recently as accommodation for St Andrews University before The Kohler Co. acquired the property and announced its restoration plans.

Working with such an historically important an architecturally protected building has required a sensitive and painstaking approach to restoration and conservation throughout the entire construction process. An important element of the project has seen ISG reinstate one of the building’s most distinctive features – its roof-mounted pepper pot domes. One of these domes was destroyed by fire in the 1980s and replaced with a fibreglass replica. ISG used the same materials and techniques to create an authentic replacement dome, which was subsequently craned into position and now overlooks the Old Course.

National Wood Awards 2014 Announces Shortlist

The shortlist of 30 projects has been selected from another record entry of over 300 British architecture and furniture projects in the national Wood Awards 2014 - the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in design in wood.

The Wood Awards independent judging panel of architecture, engineering, craftsmanship and design experts now visit the shortlisted projects in person - from the South coast to the Highlands - before making their final decision. The winners of the Wood Awards categories and the recipient of the Wood Awards Arnold Laver Gold Award for the ‘winner of winners’ will be announced on the 18th November at a reception in London hosted by the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, and the Wood Awards 2014 supplement will be published in RIBA Journal’s December issue.

The attributes of all the elements of the building can be found in the model and with this comes the concept of automatic 'clash detection', namely the identification by the model of inconsistencies between different elements of the design before they arise on site. Portakabin Sees 19 Per Cent Rise In Orders In The Manufacturing Sector – Another Indicator Of The Economic Upturn The upturn in UK manufacturing has seen increasing demand for new buildings from Portakabin, the UK’s leading modular building manufacturer. UK manufacturing output rose 4.4 per cent year-on-year in April according to the Office for National Statistics, its fastest pace in three years.

The latest snapshot survey of business conditions in engineering and manufacturing companies by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, describes the manufacturing sector as having “started 2014 with a bang”, with the sector growing 1.4 per cent in the first quarter of this year, the strongest quarterly growth since 2010. This was the fourth consecutive quarter of growth.

Regionally, Yorkshire and Humber, home to the Portakabin Group’s international headquarters, was the second strongest area, with 50 per cent of companies saying output had increased. Portakabin has seen a 19 per cent rise in orders from the manufacturing sector in the last nine months. Brick Awards 2014 Shortlist Revealed The Brick Development Association (BDA) has announced the shortlist for the 2014 Brick Awards, one of the top design and construction awards in the country.

Each year hundreds of entries are submitted and 17 prestigious trophies and more than 100 certificates are issued to the successful projects. There are 17 awards split into three categories: housing, building and landscape, and technical and craft. Survey shows importance of safety SCHOOLS and hospitals have both featured on a list of organisations Brits would consider suing should they take a tumble while on the premises. A new survey by safety flooring experts Tarkett polled 1,000 people and ties in with the expansion of the company’s popular Safetred range.

Top of the list of organisations people would consider suing should they suffer a slip are supermarkets, with 33% of respondents saying they would think about legal action against a large food retailer. Hospitals reached 5th place, with nearly 20% of people seeing legal action as a possibility followed by the local authority with 16%.

Schools fared better in 9th place with just 11% of people considering legal action. However, with nearly six million children attending school in the UK last year, that’s potentially a lot of parents.

Worryingly for employers, 23% of people would consider suing their place of work.

Sarah Igglesden, brand manager at Tarkett UK, said: “The results of this survey show that society is getting increasingly litigious and with more than 8,000 major injuries caused by slips, trips or falls reported to the HSE last year*, there is a strong possibility that an organisation could be on the receiving end of a legal suit. THE BIM APPROACH FOR THE BOILER MARKET Darren Finley, National Sales Director for Ideal Commercial Boilers, looks at how BIM can help specifiers select the best products to meet building efficiency legislation and what boiler manufacturers can or should be doing to play their part.

Regulating Energy Use April’s amends to the Building Regulations include the requirement for non-domestic buildings to be 9% more energy efficient compared to the levels required under current regulations. Although the efficiency increase is not quite as dramatic as some government advisors predicted or even hoped for, the new legislation has certainly put further pressure on building designers and engineers to ensure they specify the most energy efficient appliances and systems available that will meet a building’s heating and hot water requirements.

Along with an increased demand for overall building efficiency, there are also planned amendments to Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs), which operate as a means of assessing whether buildings are actually complying with the building regulations and will be able to do as legislation continues to grow more stringent.

These amends are a result of changes to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which came into force in January 2013, and state amongst other amends that public buildings above 500m² now require a DEC and are to display an EPC where

A Positive Aspect Although challenging for the industry, the increasing emphasis on whole building efficiency can also be seen as a catalyst for encouraging the change to a more collaborative approach to construction, with all parts of the supply chain working towards achieving this end goal. There are numerous aspects to consider when designing a heating system that will actually meet the efficiency requirements dictated by the new Building Regulations. Up until recently, however, it hasn’t always been easy for building engineers or designers to gather the finer details in one place that would

Building Information Modelling (BIM) was introduced for this very purpose and the Government is giving it full back up, with the intention that BIM becomes standardised across all disciplines in the building sector. The first deadline is 2016, when BIM will become compulsory on all public sector projects and the Government is currently phasing it in via a series of ‘levels’.

Sharing Expertise One of the reasons the Government is viewing BIM as the way forward is that it brings into play the common sense factor that many feel has been lacking from the traditional approach to construction, which has focused more on competitive tendering and short term cost savings rather than sharing vital information. This is perhaps surprising considering that the creation of a building or the incorporation of a new system within an existing framework must, by necessity, be an act of collaboration between people in often widely differing areas of expertise, including architects, engineers, designers, manufacturers and facilities managers. BIM is heralded as the first truly workable model that has been created.

BIM is not just a software solution but a whole systems approach, and the expertise and information that can be provided by manufacturers plays a major part.

For leading manufacturers such as Ideal Commercial Boilers who are able to supply wall mounted boilers on dedicated frame and header kits, corresponding components will also be available so that the designer can see wall hung boilers installed in cascade as they would look in the finished installation and will be able to place this in the virtual plant room to check the width, height and positioning. They could even test whether it would be more appropriate to install the boilers in-line or back-to-back.

These boiler manufacturers will be able to offer flexible installation options, such as left or right hand connections and even the option of a low height frame and header kit if, for example, an old floor standing model previously situated under a low ceiling were to be replaced with condensing wall hung replacements.

So size and space issues can be tested, but this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the ‘Information’ side of Building Information Modelling. Each 3D model is also data-enriched so that essential technical information is actually embedded within an individual BIM component.

Boiler BIM components will include information such as the boiler efficiency (part load, full load, seasonal, etc.), NOx emissions, outputs, service clearance zones, pipe kit options, flue and header options,

contributing to a higher overall building efficiency.

Manufacturing a Collaborative Solution BIM is still in its infancy and its very creation is requiring the input of all sectors of the building industry to ensure interoperability through open standards – a fact that is pleasingly congruent with BIM’s main objective which is to improve collaboration in order to more efficiently meet the objectives for all building projects.

Efficient Information Sharing To help the system designer calculate whether the boiler will operate in condensing mode on a particular system, a circumstance for which the return temperature must be 54°C or lower which is required in order for significant condensation to form in the heat exchanger, the boiler’s flow and return requirements can also be embedded in each component.

This is an important consideration as the boiler’s ability to operate in condensing mode will affect overall building efficiency and might be a key factor in ensuring it meets Part L of the Building Regulations.

If the system design needs to be modified to create the required return temperature, this issue can be identified and addressed at the earliest design stage rather than towards the end of the building project, thereby avoiding a situation in which the intended energy performance of the building does not match its actual operational efficiency, a situation known as the ‘energy performance gap’.

Leading manufacturers like Ideal Commercial Boilers are already working alongside recognised industry bodies to help generate an industry document detailing exactly what information should be included for each BIM component and the most effective format to use, so that all information submitted to the Construction

Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) – the Government’s formal system for organising and sharing information – is standardised, thereby enabling clear structured data collection now and in the future.

The increasingly stringent energy efficiency legislation is certainly proving a challenge to all those in the building services industry but, as with any challenge, it is also proving to be an effective catalyst for innovation, and manufacturers certainly have plenty of opportunities to play their part.

The emerging integrated approach to building services as modelled by the BIM approach is ultimately going to help ensure the highest energy efficiency potential is achieved for each building project, which in addition to reducing carbon emissions will also reduce the time and cost of construction projects, thereby contributing to industry growth. Whatever one’s perspective, this can only be a positive way forward.

Providing the information needed to help building engineers ensure a boiler will run in condensing mode as part of a particular system is just one of countless ways in which boiler manufacturers can use BIM to help engineers foresee possible issues and ensure their products will work at optimum efficiency,

FAÇADE PHYSICS: BEATING HEAT’S CRACKING INFLUENCE The most common cause of thermal fracture in annealed glass is heat from the sun or from inside the building causing the exposed areas of the glass to expand more rapidly than the cooler, shaded areas.

The perimeter of the glass which sits in the frame rebate, and/or any other areas of glass which are shaded, will never heat up as quickly, and/or to the same extent as the exposed areas.

The risk of thermal fracture increases in annealed glass where a temperature difference of between 25-40 degrees Celsius, depending on the product, occurs. But this is reduced if the glass has been poorly cut, damaged during handling, or improperly glazed.

Achieving a thermally safe solution, however, goes way beyond the type of glass used and the quality of its processing and installation. It requires a much more comprehensive review of the façade design at an early stage.

Thermal safety is a vital consideration in glass façade specification which architects and designers are increasingly seeking to address, according to Mike Butterick, marketing director at façade contractor GLASSOLUTIONS. With the priorities for glass facades most often on aesthetics, structural integrity, thermal performance and how best to deliver the most comfortable internal environment, there is one fundamental law of physics that also has to be taken into account when designing façades.

In the last 12 months, there has been a notable increase in the number of architects, engineers and specifiers seeking advice about the thermal safety of glass used in facades as they seek to prevent costly remediation work.

Delivering a thermally safe glass façade means addressing the material’s natural propensity to expand with heat and contract in the cold. An unsuitable glass specification usually results in thermal fracture – a crack in the pane of the glass from the edge due to stresses induced by differing rates of expansion and contraction.

Thermal stress is a potential issue for any annealed product, especially if used in laminated, tinted and/ or coated formats, which is the preference for those seeking to avoid the use of toughened glass. Whilst toughened glass is not prone to thermal fracture, it does however require careful consideration of both its optical and break characteristics. For example, toughened glass is prone to optical distortion due to the tempering/toughening process and this can impact on the visual appeal of glass facades.

Chiefly, what is the geographical orientation of the façade? What is its pitch? Verticals are less prone to thermal fracture than horizontal, with varying degrees of impact at all angles between. And what is the type and colour of frame, and the impact of shading from other external elements?

Internal elements that reflect heat back at and/or trap heat against the glass also impact. For example, blinds, floor slabs or bulkheads, and even posters that are applied to the glass.

Failure to factor-in the risk of thermal safety and specify the right glass at the design stage, leaves building owners and facilities managers open to expensive and disruptive remediation work. This is especially the case for high-rise buildings where the cost of replacing one pane of glass could run into tens of thousands of pounds.

DALLMER FLOOR DRAINS PROVE THEIR FITNESS AT easyGym

Dallmer has supplied its stylish CeraLine shower channels for a chain of popular private fitness clubs stretching from the capital to the Midlands: being specified for their high discharge rates and excellent installation characteristics as well as their attractive appearance: proving their all-round fitness for purpose. The easyGym operates 10 venues created by the group, which had previously spread its wings from airline flights to budget hotels. The Mall in Wood Green is one of the latest venues to be refurbished.

Dallmer was able to supply the CeraLine W2000 units so that they could be finished on site.

The latest contract was carried out by main contractor, Lovebuild. Work was completed on schedule, in time for the June opening, with the design of the rugged, stainless steel and polypropylene drainage channels helping to speed both the plumbing connections and the laying of the floor tiling.

The two metre long sections of channel feature sanded flanges to ensure a secure bond with the under-tile waterproofing layer; while the height adjustable legs facilitate millimetre accurate levelling.

As in this instance the CeraLine is normally aligned with the wall of the shower area to remove water effectively from the surrounding floor surface. In fact with water filling to a depth of 20 mm around the CeraLine W2000, the hydraulic design of the Dallmer channel offers a flow rate of 1.4 litres per second compared to just 0.8 for standard channels. The Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow has been extensively refurbished in preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2014. The new centre was opened in May 2013. Flowcrete Provided BAC Mono with a Platform for Success at IFB Flowcrete UK has been both figuratively and literally supporting one of the standout British manufacturers of the International Festival for Business (IFB). Over the course of the event the Liverpool based Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) demonstrated one of its elite Mono sports cars, which is the world’s first road legal, single-seat production supercar, on top of a bespoke showcase stand provided by Flowcrete UK. To celebrate its success at the globally renowned exhibition, BAC invited Flowcrete UK and all of the partnering companies that had worked in collaboration with them on the project to its BAC Technical Partners event, where the quickly expanding car company recognised the benefits that had stemmed from working in synergy with these brands. Flowcrete UK’s in-house project management service, Isocrete Project Management, was integral to creating the tailor-made exhibition stand from the decorative stone-carpet flooring system Rustik Glamourstone. 82m2 of the same material was also applied within the car company’s new Liverpool showroom.

Howe Green’s Powers The Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery At The British Museum Architects chose a bespoke Howe Green access cover solution for The Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery at The World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre (WCEC), which opened earlier this year with an exhibition devoted to the Vikings (supported by BP).

The WCEC designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) and constructed by Mace is one of the largest redevelopment projects in the British Museum’s 260 year history.

Located in the north-west corner of the Museum’s Bloomsbury estate, the £135 million Centre provides a new public exhibitions gallery, state-of-the-art laboratories and studios, world class stores for the collection, as well as facilities to support the Museum’s extensive UK and international loan programme. RSHP needed a reliable access cover solution for the interior scheme to provide a series of service points at regular intervals throughout the gallery’s 1,100sqm floor area.

With aesthetics and performance of equal importance, Howe Green manufactured a circular access cover in 316-grade stainless steel to provide a stylishly discreet solution capable of withstanding a 40kn load. Each box section had built-in cable access and voice/data plug-in points and slotted steel lids were made for when in use.

The access covers also accepted coloured polished concrete inserts made to match the surrounding Ed Lazenby floor and provide an uninterrupted floor finish when required.

The WCEC building consists of five pavilions (one of which is submerged below the ground) and the design is sensitive to the British Museum’s existing architecture, connecting to the historic building whilst maintaining its own identity.

Following in the fierce footsteps of the Vikings will be Ming – an exhibition exploring a golden age in China’s history. Ming opens on September 18th.

Changing The Way The UK And The World Insulates Insulation for energy efficiency has stepped into the 21st century. When the largest airport in the world at the time was built in Bangkok, Thailand, the developers wanted to use the most innovative sustainable technology in their design so they turned to nanotechnology based thermal barrier coatings to provide a clear insulation that protected their aluminum airbridge panels from corrosion and condensation. The coatings insulated in a thin, clear layer with a much longer lifespan that traditional fibrous insulation, while also fitting in beautifully with the design aesthetics. Since the initial installation in 2005, that coating is still keeping the Suvarnabhumi International Airport energy efficient.

Gaia’s Wet Underfloor Heating System Offers Discreet, HighPerformance Heating Wet (hydronic) underfloor heating systems are popular when compared to radiators and other heating systems as they provide lower running costs. Gaia’s systems are designed for simple, energy-efficient and economic installations in commercial or domestic properties and are backed by a full design service to ensure the required performance is achieved.

Wet underfloor heating (UFH) systems circulate hot water through a series of continuous pipe loops, generally fed from gas boilers, although they are particularly suited to use with heat pumps. UFH gives an even temperature across the floor and a comfortable radiant heat within the room. Importantly UFH is ‘invisible’, freeing up space so design decisions and furniture layouts are not compromised.

A well-designed system is crucial to achieving the correct heat levels. Before installation, Gaia’s design service calculates the required heat outputs for the system and produces a floor plan showing the layout of the pipework and heating zones.

The flexible 16mm Gaia UFH pipes can be laid within a screed or between timber joists beneath the floor. A high level of insulation under the pipes is essential to drive the heat upwards. Following the floor plan specified, Gaia’s installation team installs the pipes into a ‘clip rail’ at anything from 100mm to 300mm spacing depending on the heat output required.

Nanotechnology-based thermal barrier coatings, known and marketed as Nansulate®, have been used globally since their first introduction in 2004, and are now gaining recognition in the UK. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of materials at a smaller scale than was previously possible. By manipulating matter at the nanoscale, materials have the ability to be built from the atomic level up with much less waste.

Each zone has a single loop of pipe with a flow and return connected to a central manifold where actuators open and close the flow to the individual zones. Control is provided via a wiring centre linked to simple individual room thermostats with a central timer or a digital programmable version. The system is then commissioned and balanced to achieve the calculated flow rate.

Innovative Natural Ventilation From SE Controls Helps Keep Pupils Alert A new £2 million science centre at Moreton Hall School in Oswestry, is using an advanced NVLogiQ natural ventilation monitoring and control solution from SE Controls to maintain classroom indoor air quality while providing a stimulating and comfortable environment for pupils.

The sophisticated monitoring and control algorithm used within the compact NVLogiQ system was developed in conjunction with Loughborough University’s School of Civil and Building Engineering to ensure indoor CO2 levels and temperatures are precisely controlled while minimising building energy losses.

Founded more than 100 years ago, Moreton Hall is one of the UK’s highest achieving independent schools, providing education for girls from age 3 to 18 and boys from 3 to 11, together with accommodation and facilities for boarding.

The new two-storey science building provides high quality teaching laboratories for the school’s junior science, GCSE and A level students and was designed

by Shrewsbury based architects, Baart Harries Newall who were keen to ensure that the building’s indoor air quality was maintained within national standards and its energy consumption was minimised.

To achieve the designer’s objectives, SE Controls worked closely with the architects and main contractors, Jones Brothers Weston Rhyn, to develop an assisted natural ventilation solution. Using compact NVLogiQ room controllers linked to automatic opening windows and a low energy cross flow fan in each of the eight lab classrooms, the system manages ventilation as well as the operation of radiators to provide a fully integrated low energy system.

The NVLogiQ room controllers constantly monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in each classroom alongside indoor air temperature and relative humidity, as well as outside temperature, wind and rain via external sensors. Biomass – strike while the tariffs are still hot!

Following the Government’s announcement at the start of July of a 5% reduction in the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) tariffs, Euroheat is urging eligible businesses that have not yet taken advantage of the scheme to do so now while returns are still reasonably healthy.

“The Non-Domestic RHI is three years old this autumn and, as such, funds will be on the decline,” said Dick Stephens from Euroheat. “July’s tariff reduction is just the start of the slippery slope towards the end of the commercial version of the RHI and companies considering switching to biomass should make the move now while there’s still money in the pot.

“How quickly this will happen is anyone’s guess – we expected a reduction earlier on in the scheme and this never happened.

The mild winter we’ve just had means tariff outputs have been abnormally low so it’s likely there’s more money to go around than might have been expected. Inflation’s also helped slow down the process with the 8.8 pence per kWh going down to just 8.4 – a negligible reduction, at the moment.

“There’s still money to be made in biomass and the businesses that have already seen the benefits of wood heating are reaping the financial rewards, while seeing a considerable reduction in fuel bills. Sarum House and Robertshaw House, built in 1971, are identical buildings each comprising 26 flats that are specially designed for older persons who wish to retain independent living. Space heating is particularly important for the older person and the previous non-condensing floor standing boilers were not only unreliable but also extremely costly to run.

Rob Sowden, Commercial Gas Engineer for New Forest District Council, selected the Evomax boilers as he knew from experience they are reliable and exceptionally easy to install and maintain. He installed a 60kW and an 80kW Evomax on a Frame and Header Kit in the boiler room at Sarum House and repeated the installation at Robertshaw house. Rob also integrated sequence controllers to further minimise fuel use.

Aquair Water To Air Space Heater Units Bring School's Heating System Into The Modern Era Six Johnson & Starley Aquair S-20 Water to Air Heat Interface Units (HIUs) have been installed at the Edinburgh Dome, an unusual Grade 2 listed sports hall at Malvern St. James Girls’ School. They have replaced the original warm air heating system that was installed some 36 years ago by Peter Lucas of The Modern Heating Company. The original installation consisted of six warm air heaters located in two plant rooms. As the heaters became beyond economical repair, they fell out of use in turn, and in 2013 Heating Maintenance Services Ltd., run by Paul Lucas, the son of Peter, were asked to recommend a solution.

“I’ve worked with Johnson & Starley for many years and knew the Aquairs would be an ideal solution,” says Paul. “As the original warm air ducting was already in place, the replacement Aquair S-20’s HIUs could be fitted with minimal modification re-using this.” Aquair water to air heat exchange units are available with heat output of 10, 16 or 20kW at a hot water on temperature of 80 degrees C. For energy efficient operation and accurate delivery of heat, a modulating control is incorporated. They also feature a standard air cleaner that helps to keep the air free from particulates. With the Aquairs installed the Dome is much warmer,

and heating bills will be reduced as the Aquairs are up to 25% more energy efficient than the old heating system. They are used in banks of three, with one boiler running each bank. This splits the load so that each Aquair operates at the same temperature as the one next to it and delivers the same amount of heat. In this way, one Aquair does not work harder than another and the heating load is shared equally.

The Edinburgh Dome is surrounded by a moat with only stepping stones across it to reach the plant rooms. The removal and replacement of the old system took approximately just three weeks and some new base plates were made by a local company. An important security consideration is preventing the handle from moving if the window is manipulated from outside. For example, an attack on a window frame may make part of the hardware accessible. If the intruder is able to move the hardware mechanism, it might be possible to disengage the locking points and open the window. A handle with a locking mechanism prevents this. Roto offers three different ways to secure a handle.

There is the traditional pushbutton locking option. The handle cannot be moved until the button is pressed.

What must be one of the most striking façades in the City of Westminster has been created for a boutique hotel in Soho by positioning a bespoke piece of modern art above a stylish revolving door from GEZE UK.

Wrightstyle completes 007 project with a Twist Wrightstyle, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of steel and aluminium glazing systems, has completed a prestigious contract to install several door systems in the main lobby of a Grade II former grain warehouse in east London, with fictional connections to Oliver Twist and James Bond. The contract at 133 St Saviour’s Wharf, now a prime residential location at the heart of a conservation area, underlines the transformation of a district that used to be a notorious slum.

St Saviour’s Dock was where Bill Sykes, the fearsome character in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, ran his criminal empire – and where he met a grisly end in the mud of the dock. Wrightstyle supplied four sets of doors, three of which were access-controlled Schuco Jansen E30 systems. The fourth was a Schuco Janison E130 system, installed as a fire exit door and providing 30/30 insulation and integrity.

The contract was carried out on behalf of the St Saviour’s Wharf Company and the architect was Carver Haggard, with a design brief to provide functionality and an exceptionally high level of quality, in a residential environment where apartments sell for well over £1,000,000.

The bottom framing of the doors is concealed below the finished floor, and above the doors is a set of vertical glazed panels - back painted to hide the top of the doors. This allows for an elegant, completely glazed appearance – and gives the structure a feeling of lightness.

Alongside is a second glass enclosure, which includes a structurally glazed roof of over 6 metres in length. Kladfix Supports Soapworks Scheme Kladfix, the rainscreen cladding support system specialist has supplied their KX03 fittings to the new £70 million Soapworks scheme in Manchester. The re-development of the former Colgate-Palmolive factory in Salford Quays will offer 400,000 sq ft of office space, including a range of on-site amenities.

The Soapworks refurbishment project has transformed a disused boiler house into a sustainable commercial building which provides 20,000 sq ft of office space. Designed by architect Shedkm, this development was completed in late 2011. Phase two of the project began in January 2013 and is on track to be finished

by May 2014. This phase will offer cost efficient Grade A office space which is just a few miles from the city centre. External cladding contractors, ECL contracts specified and installed Kladfix KX03 horizontal support systems for this project.

“The KX03 is a great quality product which is easy to install and extremely cost effective” said Barry Worrel, Site Manager from ECL Contracts. “We were particularly impressed with the stock that Kladfix holds at its depot, ensuring that we could get access to the product quickly and easily. Carea Adds A Stylish Finish To The New John Lewis York At the new £15 million John Lewis department store in York, an 1,800m2 Ardal cladding system from Carea has helped to deliver a striking aesthetic befitting of the company’s first shop to open in its 150th anniversary year.

DLA Architecture developed detailed designs for the John Lewis shop from concept designs produced by architects Brooker Flynn as part of the overall design for the £90 million Vangarde Shopping Park built by Caddick Construction for developer The Oakgate Group.

Following its successful specification and installation at the major refurbishment of John Lewis Exeter – Carea’s Ardal range once again proved the perfect solution to meet the aesthetic and durability demands of “the UK's favourite retailer”.

Installation of the Ardal cladding in Joal colour and Riven finish by specialist contractor Coverstructure was also quick and simple thanks to the Carea facade system.

Each panel is supplied with specialised horizontal rails that fit onto vertical cladding supports, with precisely routed grooves on the top and bottom. This simple fix provides a totally seamless finish to maintain the stunning appearance of this landmark project.

For the canopy area over the new store’s entrance, Carea had to cut a series of panels at an angle of approximately 20° before installing with through fixing. A number of panels were also cut at even tighter angles to meet the complex design, whilst Carea developed a bespoke 40mm rail to be used in the signage area.

“This is the second project we have completed with John Lewis,” said Carea UK sales manager Richard Hunt. “At John Lewis York we worked closely with DLA Architecture and Coverstructure to ensure our bespoke Ardal cladding system delivered exactly what John Lewis required at this high-profile development.”

Solar Solution Is Storming Success On Damaged Roof The flat roof on Linn Products’ main office building in Glasgow had been left badly damaged by heavy storms, with all existing ballasted solar panels lifted off the roof and destroyed beyond repair. The client was left with two problems: a leaking roof and the loss of their photovoltaic (PV) system. The remedial work had to be completed to fixed deadlines in order to comply with insurance requirements, and Linn wanted to maximise the use of their roof area by replacing the pre-existing PV array with a solar solution of the highest quality.

Bauder’s state-of-the-art photovoltaic system, SOLfixx, successfully fulfilled this requirement. Due to the building’s exposed location, robust wind uplift calculations were performed prior to work commencing on site, ensuring the new roof could resist even the most extreme weather conditions. The original single ply waterproofing was overlaid with 2,500m² of Bauder’s Thermofol PVC system, which possesses high tensile strength and is resilient to the natural elements. Having installed the new waterproofing, Bauder approved contractor W G Walker & Co fitted the SOLfixx system onto the roof using a unique interlocking method that doesn’t penetrate the waterproofing or roof deck, preserving the roof’s integrity.

Any slight movement of the panels experienced from wind uplift is easily tolerated by the SOLfixx system, providing the client with long-term reassurance with regards to their roof’s future performance. The PV array consisted of 166 modules, set at a 100 angle for optimum energy production, enabling Linn Products to generate at least 38.67 Megawatt Hours of solar power each year and over 20 tonnes of CO2 annual savings. The remarkable simplicity of the installation method also meant that the entire array could be fitted in just two days, ensuring the refurbishment work adhered to the exact deadlines agreed with the client.

Project specifier, Ramsay McMichael Consulting stated their delight with the final result, “Bauder provided high levels of technical assistance throughout the project and delivered to the client a comprehensive waterproofing and PV solution of the absolute highest quality. The Beeches consists of fifteen affordable houses and two apartments and is surrounded by fields which were once a medieval farming community, several listed buildings and a Church.

DW Hicks Building Company was the main contractor for this project and was instructed to specify a plain clay tile with a ‘club’ design or a traditional natural slate. After reviewing the costs for both options, DW Hicks suggested opting for a fibre cement slate as it is provides the same appearance as a natural slate but is more cost effective. The contractors worked closely with Cresta Roofing Supplies, a Cembrit stockist, to find a suitable roofing material and specified Cembrit’s Jutland slate. The main attraction to this particular product was that Cembrit was able to incorporate the desired club pattern.

“With cost, appearance and design all being key elements for this project, we thought we would have a tough time finding a suitable roof slate” said Samual Hicks, the supply chain manager from DW Hicks Building Company.

“However, Cembrit was extremely accommodating and the Jutland slate ticked all the boxes. Not only was the planner satisfied with our choice, but we were impressed with how easy the product was to cut and install.

“We were also pleased with the service and support we received from Cembrit” continues Samual. “They made a cutting die and cut the slates for us with the club banding. The technical advice we received from them was second to none and we are more than likely to work with Cembrit again on future projects.”

Jutland slates are lightweight and feature a smooth surface, square edge and are pre-holed. They do not need to be graded and sorted like natural slates.

Manufactured from specially reformulated, recycled material for trafficked and deep applications, 220 AquaCell Prime units were specified below a parking area at the rear of the apartment complex in order to create a 5m x 10m x 0.8m deep cellular unit soakaway.

AquaCell Prime has been specifically designed for use in areas subject to regular traffic loading such as car parks. The units were installed at a depth of 1.8 metres, well within the gravel percolation strata. Once clipped together, the units were then tightly wrapped in a permeable geotextile therefore forming a soakaway construction The BBA approved AquaCell system is available in a range of four units of differing strengths which include AquaCell Eco, Core, Prime and Plus which can be mixed and matched to create the optimum installation for a range of applications including landscaped or trafficked for either shallow or deep applications. All AquaCell units have proven lateral and vertical loading performances and provide an effective answer to managing excessive rainfall. Blackpool and Fleetwood tramway

Some UK Projects York Railway Station Opening in 1877, the current structure of York Station took three years to build. Designed by the North Eastern Railway’s architect Thomas Prosser, the curved 800ft-long train-shed roof, supported by iron columns, arched 42ft above the platforms. The station was immediately hailed as one of the great buildings in Victorian era. At the time, it was the largest railway station in the world with four massive arches and thirteen platforms.

Today, the structure still impresses. Serving the busy East Coast mainline route, primarily between Glasgow Aberdeen, Edinburgh and London it is also a vital cross-route link between Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. The station currently copes with around 800 trains and thousands of passengers each week. With so many passengers using the station, the extended platforms, which project out from the original arched structure, are as busy as ever. The platform surfaces have been designed to gently slope inward away from the track so any surface water naturally drains towards their centre. Effective drainage of these roofed and un-roofed “outer” areas was a major safety consideration.

Hauraton RECYFIX® STANDARD 100 channels were chosen for the slightly curving platforms – see photographs. The 271 metres of channelling installed were made from the company’s tough recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene (PE-PP), all fitted with Class C 250 ductile iron “heel-safe” gratings finished in a Black anti-oxidisation coating. As each one metre unit only weighs just over 6kg, including the grating, contractor C. Spencer Limited was impressed with the ease and speed of installing the channels as all the units used easily complied with manual lifting regulations.

Severn Tunnel East Over 500 metres of Hauraton drainage channels were successfully laid by Alfred McAlpine Project Services in the cutting approaching the Severn Tunnel East. It was part of ongoing engineering work commissioned by Western Territory Network Rail that underlines their commitment to provide a safe and reliable railway. The extensive work on the trackside and cutting slopes on this busy section of line was completed with minimal disruption to services. ”Our RECYFIX® 300 Super channels supplied to McAlpine were a good choice, as they have a large drainage cross section (863cm²) and yet only weigh 14.4kg per one metre unit”, explains Tim Connolly; “This was greatly appreciated by the contractor as easy manual handling of the channels was essential to reduce hassle on-site and allow faster installation procedures.

Interestingly, during installation no on-site breakages of the channels supplied were reported.

The RECYFIX® channels were specified to comply with a load category Class C250, so they were matched with our patented GUGI® ductile iron mesh gratings, secured by eight bolts per metre. The mesh grating was chosen as it helps prevent the surrounding stone ballast from entering the channel ”

The renewed Blackpool and Fleetwood tramway The renewed Blackpool and Fleetwood tramway was inaugurated on 3rd April 2012 by UK Transport Minister Norman Baker MP. One of the very first electric tramways in the world and the first in the UK, the famous 18 kilometres (11.2 miles) coastal route from Blackpool Starr Gate to Fleetwood Ferry has been fully modernised and had the worn track replaced, including the 1.75 kilometres road running track. Funded by the Department for Transport (DFT), Blackpool Council and Lancashire County Council, the tram project is valued at approximately £100m, including for the provision of 16 new tramcar sets.

Current planning legislation requires modern tramways to take into account the control of surface water, especially where grooved rails are set into the road. Rainwater polluted with dirt, oil and lubricants can collects in the rails so must be controlled to prevent localised flooding and contamination of the surrounding ground. Tracks require reliable drainage whether the rails are set into the road or laid to ballast so a point or linear channel system will be needed.

With a load class of D400, Hauraton’s tough FASERFIX® TRAFFIC TRAM Point Inlet Gullies were specified for the project by WS Atkins because of their high hydraulic capacity, ease of installation and simple cleaning procedure. Made from ductile iron, each gully is firmly fixed to the side of the rail with one high tensile bolt. Once in position a 200mm x 20mm slot is cut in the bottom of the grooved tram rail which allows rainwater to enter the gully. The size of the slot ensures there is less likelihood of silt and dirt causing a blockage. In the Fleetwood section, the gullies are connected to underground drainage pipes. The Hallé Orchestra – Silenced By Selectaglaze!

After years of decay a refurbishment of the former St. Peter’s Church has brought this historic Victorian Grade 2 Listed building back to life. Located in Ancoats, a part of Manchester widely regarded as the world’s first industrial suburb and an historic feature of the city’s heritage, St. Peter’s is now fully operational as the home for the world renowned Hallé Orchestra and its associated Choirs. It also marks the first time the Orchestra has had a permanent rehearsal venue in its 156 year history. The refurbished church also provides facilities for small orchestral and choral public performances.

Over the years the appearance of the building has remained substantially unaltered, both inside and out. However, sound tests revealed a problem internally with the clarity in the rehearsal space and potential noise outbreak.

Acousticians Sound Space Design proposed treatments to remedy these problems that were non-invasive and with no material effect on the building fabric.

The lack of clarity within the church was affecting the members of the Orchestra’s ability to hear each other and play in ensemble. The solution was to provide sound reflecting surfaces close to the Orchestra, below the high nave ceiling of the church and to reduce the reverberation of the space to an appropriate level. Sound reflecting “Sound Sails” were installed within the space using a series of pulleys, with no fixings to the structure, hence leaving the building as it was found.

Control of noise is not only an “internal” issue. While the acoustics of a building and keeping the sound of the outside world at bay are essential to a performance venue, the effect of a “concert” on the local residents must also be taken into account. Operators of such venues are obliged as part of a license to address issues of noise breakout but this can be particularly problematic with older buildings where ill fitting windows tend to be the norm. Most single glazed windows reduce noise ingress and egress by just

25-30dB, less if they are ill fitting. Even modern double glazed windows only achieve 3035dB. However, a very practical solution is found with Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing systems, which can provide noise reduction up to 50dB. This is a reversible adaptation and therefore in most cases acceptable to heritage planning officers.

Selectaglaze treated a total of 44 large round head windows and one three metre diameter circular feature window using a total of 109 secondary window frames. Hinged casements were specified to all locations apart from the half round window heads and circular window which were treated with shaped fixed panels. The casements were fitted with high performance compression seals, flush hinges, multipoint locking and installed with a 150mm cavity to the primary window to ensure the tightest fit and the optimum noise insulation.

All frames aligned with the existing sight lines and had an attractive matt grey finish.

In addition to noise insulation secondary glazing also cuts heat loss. This together with effective frame seals serves to reduce convection currents and so provide a more comfortable performance space. The installation was a challenge due to the size and height of the windows and Selectaglaze worked closely with the contractor, City Build, delivering fully fabricated frames that could be rapidly installed from the access scaffolds. www.selectaglaze.co.uk Enquiry 99

Envirograf Products Fit The Bill At Phipp Street A creative team from Amin Taha Architects were given a project to transform the ground and two upper floors of the 2,800 sq ft of commercial space at 18 Phipp Street,London, into a modern and stylish office space. After consultations with Building Control, the requirement for fire protecting the staircase, was for a clear coating to achieve Surface Spread of Flame. Thanks to their participation in an Envirograf® CPD seminar, they knew that Envirograf® would have a product that would meet their criteria.

With the help of Andy Wahts, Envirograf’s Technical Consultant in London, they chose Envirograf® product 92 QVFR clear fire retardant coating which has been specially developed for internal application. The coating is extremely hard wearing with a fast drying time and does not require a top coat. The extensive refurbishment work has been carried out by London based Ecore Construction.

During a visit at the property, a solution was found to provide 60 minutes fire protection to the exposed timber ceiling by using Envirograf® product 42 HW Intumescent Coating System. The clear coating retains the original appearance of the timber and avoids the alternative of covering the natural beauty of the wood with 2 layers of plasterboard to achieve similar fire protection results. The coating system has made the project far more cost effective and has allowed the architects to achieve a much more desirable look to the building.

Envirograf® Product 83 Intumescent Steel Coating system has also been applied, to ensure the steel structure of the building would be well supported even in the case of a fire.

Previous property fires show, that it can take just a few minutes for unprotected steelwork in a building to attain temperatures of around 550 degrees centigrade in a fire. At this temperature, steelwork loses its load bearing capacity and the structure is likely to collapse, giving little time for people to evacuate and even less time for the fire service to bring the fire under control.

Colourful Acoustics In Action Noise in sports, swimming-pool and leisure centres can often result in unpleasant echoes because it is reflected off hard surfaces and the water and exaggerated by the natural exuberance of the participants. In the new Eura sports complex in Western Finland, architects Heino & Niirainen have solved this problem and created pleasant acoustics by the extensive use of Troldtekt ultrafine panels on the ceilings and the walls.

The most dramatic is in the large swimming pool which not only has acoustic panels between the ceiling ribs but links a multi-coloured wall of Troldekt panels on one side with a floor to ceiling glazed view on the other. The coloured acoustic panel theme is continued in the entrance hall which is dramatically coloured in red and in the dining area where blue dominates. In addition, the bowling alley has Troldtekt acoustic panel ceilings and more highly coloured acoustic walls. In some places the ceilings also house strip lighting which is recessed to create an unbroken ceiling surface.

Made from 100% natural wood fibres, Troldtekt panels are perfect for use in wet rooms and areas such as this due to their durability and ability to absorb and give off moisture. In addition, Troldtekt panels include high sound absorption, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. Castle Has A 20 Year Secret KEMPEROL KEEPS INDIA HIGH COMMISSION DRY India House, the High Commission of India’s home in the UK, will continue to offer a prestigious consulate for generations to come thanks to a facelift designed by Landers-Associates and contracted by Woodgrove Contractors Ltd using Kemper System’s Kemperol V210 waterproofing membrane.

The nine-storey building in Charing Cross has undergone a complete external refurbishment, including stone and brick repairs, stone cleaning and a new roof overlay using the Kemperol V210 cold liquid-applied waterproofing system.

The Woodgrove team carried out minor repairs and preparation of the existing 500m2 asphalt roof to ensure a clean, even surface before beginning application of the Kempertec primer and Kemperol V210 waterproofing system. The Kemperol V210 liquid resin saturates a non-woven reinforcement fleece that is immensely strong and tear resistant, and cures to form a permanently elastic monolithic membrane that cannot delaminate. It is tough and durable, UV resistant, and can even accommodate standing water. The upstands, various skylights penetrations and details on the roof were all seamlessly waterproofed by the Woodgrove team using Kemperol.

The refurbishment also involved application of the Kemperol V210 membrane on the asphalt substrate of the building’s feature balconies.

Built by Henry VIII between 1539-1540, Walmer Castle (Kent) was to serve a purpose as an artillery fortress, guarding England from the threat of French and Spanish invasions. The castle has since enjoyed the attention of locals and tourists alike, and have received the honour of welcoming Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, within its walls.

A threat of a different kind to the castle however, still remained, that of the risk of a fire destroying this important part of our heritage.

Over 20 years ago, the Envirograf® technical team was contacted, to offer fire protective coatings for the wooden panels on the walls within the living quarters of the residency. Howe Green’s heavy-duty 7500 Series stainless steel access covers have been installed at Manchester Cathedral as part of extensive reordering works commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of Manchester Cathedral.

Architecturally, Manchester Cathedral is modern by Cathedral standards and was built up around the mediaeval Collegiate Church by the Victorians. In the late early and mid 19th Century, the original ledger stones were replaced with concrete and a network of copper pipe acting as an early form of in-floor heating. Heating the Cathedral from the floor was essentially the same method used over 150 years later but with only 60% of the heating pipe work working in recent years, a little intervention of the earthly kind was needed to make the facilities fit for the 21st century.

USE Architects Breathe New Life Into Hackney With The Help Of Rain-Screen Cladding Made From DuPont™ Corian® In one of the earliest major applications in the UK for DuPont™ Corian® high tech surface as a structural façade, architectural practice USE has created a distinctive new residential building in an area of London experiencing significant regeneration. Standing proud and pristine, in contemporary juxtaposition to the Victorian railway arches of London Fields, Mentmore Terrace makes an impressive addition to the local landscape – and has delighted its neighbours, according to the architect, by gently reflecting the light with its smooth, pale and elegant finish. Formed entirely from DuPont™ Corian®, which is fast becoming a favoured façade material for discerning developers, this high-performance weather screen promises to maintain its subtle and sophisticated beauty for the long term.

Architect Jo Hagan, who has been keenly involved for many years in the regeneration of local neighbourhoods such as his own community of Hackney, describes the concept behind the project: “There is certainly an element of homage to the Bauhaus in the overall design, and the façade and its relationship to the windows and balconies is the only element of decoration. The concept is inspired by the book Fahrenheit 451 by Raymond Bradbury and so we have used a 4.5.1. ratio for the various panels.”

Jo says that he has thought about using DuPont™ Corian® for exterior cladding for quite some time, as he has the material in his own kitchen and has long admired its performance and aesthetic qualities. However, it wasn’t until the opportunities presented by this project that the notion became a reality – partly because Jo co-owns the building (his practice has moved from an older building next door to new premises on the ground floor) and thus, by also being ‘the client’ he had considerably more freedom to innovate.

“I’ve always wanted to cover a building in Corian®,” explains Jo, “But it needed a leap of imagination as it has not been used in this way, on a larger scale, in this country before.

By working with the 4.5.1 ratio this allowed for a certain economy while visually breaking up the mass of what is otherwise a very simple structure. The design is both an abstract aesthetic and yet practical in that it offers more variety to the vertical elements and makes

a stronger pattern with the shadow gaps, while also having the appearance of a solid mass from afar.”

The individual panels of DuPont™ Corian® that form the façade were fabricated and fitted with expert workmanship by specialists Urbana Exteriores from Spain, and have been installed using a Kiel fixing system to a Hilti frame. The structure also benefits from the installation of DuPont™ Tyvek® UV Façade a version of the renowned advanced breather membrane that has been created specifically to allow greater design freedom, reliable protection and enhanced energy performance for open-jointed facades.

Rather than opt for one of the bright whites within the sophisticated colour palette for Corian®, Jo chose to go with a whisper of colour in the form of Private Grey, a discreet hue that transforms with the variable UK light it has a subtle quality, which according to Jo Hagan, “can make the building appear to float.” Thirty seven colours of DuPont™ Corian® are recommended for façade applications, offering a refined choice for cladding design, which together the notable versatility of the material, allows for an inspiring vista of decorative effects.

Specialist architects Lloyd Evans Prichard planned and implemented the project, overseeing a painstaking excavation process, the removal of the old antiquated heating system and subsequent installation of a new network of mechanical and electrical chambers across the entire body of the main Cathedral building, including its Nave, aisles and chapels.

As a leading developer and manufacturer of floor, ceiling and wall access solutions, Howe Green’s access covers were chosen to provide reliable yet virtually invisible access to these chambers, for best aesthetics and to ensure easy maintenance going forward. Over 70 of their 7500 Series stainless steel access covers were made, each to a bespoke size and specification to fit precisely with new Burlington Stone slabs being installed. Several multipart covers were needed too, the largest at 1747 x 853mm mirroring the dimension of Victorian voids underneath the stone floor.

Multiple frame and cover sections ensured the frame weights met HSE manual handling requirements.

On a more unusual note, Howe Green also designed a special cover grating to allow air supply to the blower working the bellows of the Cathedral’s remarkable organ; famously damaged in a series of bombing raids during the war but repaired, maintained and used to this day. All the stainless steel access panels supplied were designed to withstand heavy foot traffic, without any detriment to strength or quality. Fitted quickly and unobtrusively into all types of hard floor finishes, the installation of the floor access panels allowed work on site to flow smoothly with the covers sitting 100% flush with the floor with no risk of slips or trips. But in such a historic and prestigious building, the decision to use Howe Green access covers was not just about practicality; it was also essential that the access panels blended in seamlessly with the floor to achieve the required aesthetic.

COMBISAFE UBIX® FITS THE BILL AT NORWEGIAN PARLIAMENT BUILDING An innovative UBIX temporary roof system from COMBISAFE has provided reliable and high quality weather protection during a roof replacement project at The Storting – the 150 year old Norwegian Parliament Building in Oslo. Originally designed by Swedish architect Emil Victor Langlet and built in the 1860s, the Parliament of Norway Building required a new roof system to be completed during the summer of 2013. Alliero Stillas AS was appointed to install a temporary roof to offer exceptional weather protection and enable a smooth and efficient construction programme, with the UBIX® temporary roof system fitting the bill.

Taking the scaffolding team just one week to erect, the 432m2 UBIX temporary roof provided outstanding protection for the full four-month programme of works. WINNING BRONZE Visitors to the newly redeveloped Adelaide Oval - one of Australia’s most iconic sports venues - will now be greeted by a dramatic, cantilevered curved form over the main entrance, created from over 4,000 individual panels of Nordic Bronze from Aurubis. The redevelopment involves new south and east stands, related to the previously redeveloped western grandstand. It provides 50,000 spectator seats and ancillary facilities for cricket and Australian Rules football, as well as other sports and entertainment.

The design is conceived as a series of pavilions in a parkland setting. The two new stands combine concrete structures and tiered-seating, curtainwall glazing and diagrid PTFE roofs. A copper mesh veil provides shelter and solar shading to facades, and is pierced by a series of solid Nordic Bronze clad volumes, orientated to optimise specific local views.

The distinctive form of the William Magarey Room is encased in a doublecurved geometry façade of Nordic Bronze panels, inclined in a sectional plane, announcing the main entry point to the south stand below. Each segment exposed to different climatic conditions will generate subtle variations in weathered surface tones over time. The Nordic Bronze skin flows underneath to form a reflective soffit, then into the interior to define the solid mass while blurring inside and outside boundaries. Cladding was installed by Cladding & Roofing Contractors PTY. In addition to Nordic Bronze, other Aurubis copper alloys include Nordic Brass – which is now also available pre-weathered - and the innovative Nordic Royal, an alloy with a long-lasting golden colour. Aurubis Architectural copper surfaces include Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’, as well as Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper giving either light or dark brown oxidisation that otherwise takes time to develop in the environment.
