THANK YOU SENIORS!

HARD WORK PAYS Believing ‘how you do one thing is how you do everything,’ Linfield’s tireless defender Patrick Moes is elevating his work ethic and his performance on the pitch to new levels by riley omonaka ’24

P

atrick Moes, a member of the Linfield University men’s soccer team, knows a thing or two about demanding work. He understands what a real commitment and work ethic look like. Hailing from Boise, Idaho, Moes is an example for teammates and peers alike on how to succeed through one’s own merit. While at Linfield, Moes has worked in Facilities Services where he is highly regarded by coworkers and advisors as an industrious worker. He spends his working hours cleaning and maintaining the campus for the health and safety of students and staff. His reliable nature and steadiness of character show up in most aspects of his life. In school and soccer Moes is the kind of guy everyone wants in their corner. Moes has been a consistent rock for the team since arriving on campus in the fall of 2020. During his first season of regular conference play, Moes started 16 matches as a defender. Playing 1,506 minutes on the field over the course of the season, Moes managed to put only one shot on frame. This year, however, in just 11 matches, Moes has scored two goals and assisted on another tally. This huge upswing in offensive production is a testament to how hard Moes has stepped up his game since last season and his growing commitment to the program. “I’ve learned how important it is to work hard in every aspect of my life,” he says, “because how you do one thing is how you do everything.” Moes may have grown quite a bit over the last two years, but part of his work ethic has been ingrained in him at birth by his family. The only child of Cin-dy and Andy Moes, he has a close relationship with his parents. Moes considers them his biggest role models and No. 1 supporters. “Both of my parents have been my role models my entire life. I would not be where I am today without my parents,” Moes says. His mother and father no doubt inspired the work ethic

that Moes is admired for by teammates and friends, and as a result he has emerged as a defensive rock and opportunistic goal scorer. As dependable as he is on the soccer pitch, Moes is known to be an even more dependable friend. “I’ve only known ‘Paddy’ for two years at Linfield, but in that short time he has become one of my closest friends,” says Brady Anderson, a junior midfielder. “He’s someone I can always count on to be there for me.” Moes is a fun-loving friend to have around. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he makes competition and friendship work in unison. Just last year, Moes and Anderson purchased golf memberships together. Whether by luck or an act by the golfing gods, Moes landed a hole-inone on a Par 3 hole from 170 yards. “The excitement from us was unrivaled. The craziest part was that he had called the shot beforehand,” Anderson says. Whether on the green or the pitch, Moes has a relentless focus about him. He is a competitor through and through. Moes is the type of teammate and friend who will always inspire. In the classroom, Moes is immersed in his coursework while exploring different directions his future career might take. An economics major, Moes enjoys the faculty in his department. He says that learning from Linfield’s “exceptional” professors make his education more pleasant. In the future, Moes wants to be an economist, but he is not sure exactly where he wants to make an impact. His favorite class thus far has been environmental economics. In the classroom and in life, Moes strives to better himself. He continues to improve his study habits and aims for growth above perfection. “I really enjoy what I am studying,” he says. “I think that being an economist some day would be super fun. My academic career at Linfield has definitely helped me grow as a person.” The life of a student-athlete is never without its trials. Moes’ schedule demands balance and tremendous effort. But he possesses limitless effort and continues to expand his base of knowledge. Setting himself up for success requires introspection and honesty, both skills that Moes continues to employ. His growth mindset and commitment to self-improvement make Patrick Moes a dynamic individual. He inspires others and continues to build up those around him.

LINFIELD MEN’S BASKETBALL Defending NWC champion Wildcats open the new season November 12 at home against Northwest University The 2022-23 Linfield men’s basketball is about to get underway. The slate features challenging out-of-conference matchups against UC-Santa Cruz, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Illinois Wesleyan. The defending Northwest Conference champion Wildcats open their season at home Nov. 12 with a non-conference bout against Northwest University. The following weekend, Linfield heads to Northern California to battle CalTech and UC-Santa Cruz in the UCSC Classic at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Wildcats open Northwest Conference play with a pair of games in early December, at home versus George Fox on Dec. 2 and at Pacific on Dec. 3. Linfield heads to Spokane, Washington, just prior to Christmas to participate in the Whitworth Tipoff Classic. There, the ‘Cats are scheduled to play Nebraska Wesleyan (Dec. 20) and Mary HardinBaylor (Dec. 21). Perhaps the most intriguing game on the schedule comes during the holiday break when perennial NCAA powerhouse Illinois Wesleyan visits Ted Wilson Gym on Dec. 29. That game will set the stage for Linfield’s resumption of conference play starting five days later at home versus Willamette on Jan. 3. Key home dates on the NWC schedule include Jan. 6 versus Pacific Lutheran, Jan. 21 versus Whitman and Jan. 22 versus Whitworth. The Wildcats are coming off a season in which they finished 18-7 overall and went 13-3 in conference play. Shanan Rosenberg begins his 10th season at the helm of the Linfield men’s basketball program.

OREGON SPORTS HALL OF FAME Linfield graduate Terry Durham, who officiated in the NBA for 24 seasons, earns the state’s highest sports honor Linfield University graduate Terry Durham, who started to officiate basketball while in middle school but is better known for his 24-year career working games in the National Basketball Association, headlined the 2022 class of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame that was inducted Sunday, Oct. 9, at Portland’s Providence Park. A 1968 Linfield graduate, Durham joined coaches Dennis Erickson and Dave Gasser, basketball players Fred Jones and Felicia Ragland, master’s athlete Becky Sisley and hockey standout Connie Madigan in this year’s Oregon Sports Hall of Fame class. While he was a student at McMinnville High School, Durham stood next to his father, head football coach, Paul Durham, on the Linfield sidelines and took notes during games. When he entered Linfield and was a member of the Wildcats football team, he again stood on the sidelines, not playing quarterback much as a freshman and sophomore. Durham went on to become a two-time all-Northwest Conference quarterback. He was one of the leaders of the 1965 Linfield team, which won conference and went on to the NAIA national semifinals where the Wildcats knocked off Sul Ross State,

30-27, in Alpine, Texas. He played basketball as a freshman, then participated only in college intramurals until Coach Ted Wilson called. When Wilson kicked players off the 1966-67 Linfield basketball team, Terry became a starting guard. Linfield tied for the conference title, beat Western Oregon in the NAIA district playoffs and went to Kansas City, losing by a point in the opening round to the eventual national champion. His first coaching experience was in football at Linfield in 1969 under Coach Ad Rutschman, while he earned a master’s of education degree. Later, he coached football at Sunset and Klamath Union high schools, and was a football graduate assistant at Stanford University. He officiated junior high school, Linfield intramurals, high school, small and major college basketball games, then working eight NBA summer camps before being hired fulltime by the association. Durham previously was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and the McMinnville High School Hall of Fame in 2011.
