HEAD COACH JOSEPH SMITH
LEADER OF THE ’CATS Former All-American and national championship-winning coordinator Joseph Smith is a winner by any measure
W
ITH MORE THAN 30 YEARS INVESTED at Linfield University as head coach, assistant coach and former AllAmerica defensive back, Joseph Smith is among the college’s longest tenured coaches in any sport. Since becoming head coach in 2006, he has assembled a 145-27 win-loss record that includes 11 Northwest Conference championships and NCAA playoff berths with the Wildcats advancing as far as the NCAA semifinals (2014 and ‘15) and quarterfinals (2012, ’13 and ’21). A popular but demanding coach, Smith served as an assistant at Linfield for 13 years, including seven seasons as defensive coordinator from 1999 to 2005. During his first season in charge, the Wildcats finished 6-3. Two of the Wildcats’ losses came at the hands of Top 10 teams and the other was to a NCAA Division II program which enjoyed its best season in many years. With Smith as defensive coordinator, Linfield finished No. 1 in the Northwest Conference in total defense and scoring defense four times. During that time, the Wildcats went 60-6 and made five NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Linfield captured the 2004 Division III national championship with a 28-21 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor, a victory that was clinched by a defensive sack in the waning seconds. The Wildcats have won or shared the six NWC titles from 2000 to 2005. Smith served first as linebackers and defensive line coach before taking over as secondary coach and defensive coordinator. A second team NAIA All-American in 1992, Smith was a fouryear starter at cornerback and a two-time first team all-conference selection. He earned national distinction as NAIA Division II Defensive Player of the Week in the opening game of 1992, helping

Linfield upset second-ranked Pacific Lutheran. He finished his career with 16 interceptions, third-most in program history, and 168 tackles. Smith was a senior on Linfield’s 1992 team that went 12-1 with its only blemish coming in a 26-13 loss to Findlay (Ohio) in the NAIA Division II national championship game. As a player, he helped the Wildcats capture consecutive Columbia Football Association-Mt. Hood League championships in 1991 and 1992. Smith graduated from Linfield with honors in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. As a senior, he earned distinction as Linfield’s 1992-93 male athlete of the year. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sports psychology from Oregon State in 1996. Smith and his wife, Darla, have three children. Daughter Josie is a graduate of Carroll College in Montana. WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT
chasing a championship A budding career in finance can wait – at least long enough for Taylor Adams to take one more crack at bringing a national title back to McMinnville by marissa dolson ’24
T
he opportunity to win a national championship was a crucial factor in fifth-year senior Taylor Adams’ decision to return to the Linfield University football program this fall. Granted an extra year of eligibility due to COVID, Adams is able to pursue a championship once more alongside lifelong friends he’s made throughout his journey. The decision wasn’t an easy one but Adams knew he’d regret turning down the chance to do what he came here to do: win a national championship. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to come back,” he says. “I thought maybe I should just start working and making money. But after playing in the quarterfinals last year and losing to (eventual national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor), I felt like I would regret not coming back and not giving myself another opportunity to do what we all came here to do.” Adams has become invested in the relationships he has created along the way, whether it’s with his teammates, peers or the professors he’s met throughout his time at Linfield. He credits much of his academic success to the endless support from the Linfield staff. “I’ve met lifelong best friends through my experiences here, though they are mostly football players. And I’ve had the opportunity to meet plenty of great people outside of the football team that definitely make Linfield so great.” “This also includes the staff. I spent most of my school career in TJ Day Hall as a finance major. The professors there have been a huge part of my success in the classroom. Outside of the business department, there have been amazing professors in other departments that made classes very enjoyable even if I wasn’t sure about the class. One of my favorite classes was with professor Totem Shriver in the Art Department.” Originating from Salem, Oregon, Adams was thrilled to embark on new experiences at Linfield University. “I went to an elementary school that had a total of 65 students through all grades. My graduating class of fifth grade was 24. I went to West Salem High School which is where I started playing football during my freshman year. I also

played basketball and golf.” It’s clear Adams has a champion mindset. Growing up in a sport-oriented household and the influence of his family, he says, was the driving force behind his love for the game of football. “My family has been a huge part of my life, especially in sports,” he says. “Growing up my dad, Chuck, would always be involved in coaching Little League and youth basketball. My mom, Jill, would always be involved and most of the time was the ‘Team Mom.’ Aside from sports, I think that my parents have instilled a hard work ethic in me.” Adams has an older sister, Katy, and an older brother, Chris. “My sister is 11 years older than me. My brother, who is 13 years older, has special needs, Fragile X Syndrome. My family has been a huge part of my life, especially in sports.” His work ethic isn’t only on display on the football field; he excels in the classroom and through his extracurriculars. Adams is wrapping up the last class he needs to complete his finance degree. He also pursued a minor in wine studies. Through social networking, Adams is looking forward to considering some past work openings, as well as exploring new work opportunities. “The summer I turned 15, my parents sent me to work at Willamette Valley Vineyards to begin working and teaching me what it means to have a hard work ethic,” Adams says. “I have that connection with Willamette Valley Vineyards and it would be an honor to work there in a role that might involve the world of finance. I have also thought about going back to school and getting a master’s degree, something like an MBA or other businessspecific master’s program.” Adams is inching closer to that final opportunity to win a national championship. He is extremely grateful for the role models and influences that have helped support his growth as a person, player and student. “It would also be hard for me not to give a shout-out to all of the coaches who have been there along the way, from basketball coaches growing up to all of my football coaches in high school. I’ve been able to take something away from each one, whether it was something to make me a better person off the field or a better player on the field,” he says. As Taylor Adams wraps up his final classes, practices and games at Linfield, he feels a sense of overwhelming emotion of leaving the program and university he has become so in tune with. Adams is extremely grateful for his offensive line coaches, namely Doug Hire, Trevor Wikre and Will Heck. He says he wouldn’t change anything about his Linfield journey and is beyond thankful for all the opportunities that have come his way.

LINFIELD MEN’S BASKETBALL Defending NWC champion Wildcats open the new season November 12 at home against Northwest University The 2022-23 Linfield men’s basketball is about to get underway. The slate features challenging out-of-conference matchups against UC-Santa Cruz, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Illinois Wesleyan. The defending Northwest Conference champion Wildcats open their season at home Nov. 12 with a non-conference bout against Northwest University. The following weekend, Linfield heads to Northern California to battle CalTech and UC-Santa Cruz in the UCSC Classic at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Wildcats open Northwest Conference play with a pair of games in early December, at home versus George Fox on Dec. 2 and at Pacific on Dec. 3. Linfield heads to Spokane, Washington, just prior to Christmas to participate in the Whitworth Tipoff Classic. There, the ‘Cats are scheduled to play Nebraska Wesleyan (Dec. 20) and Mary HardinBaylor (Dec. 21). Perhaps the most intriguing game on the schedule comes during the holiday break when perennial NCAA powerhouse Illinois Wesleyan visits Ted Wilson Gym on Dec. 29. That game will set the stage for Linfield’s resumption of conference play starting five days later at home versus Willamette on Jan. 3. Key home dates on the NWC schedule include Jan. 6 versus Pacific Lutheran, Jan. 21 versus Whitman and Jan. 22 versus Whitworth. The Wildcats are coming off a season in which they finished 18-7 overall and went 13-3 in conference play. Shanan Rosenberg begins his 10th season at the helm of the Linfield men’s basketball program.

OREGON SPORTS HALL OF FAME Former Linfield football player Terry Durham, who officiated for 24 years in the NBA, earns enshrinement Linfield University graduate Terry Durham, who began officiating basketball while in middle school but is better known for his 24-year career working games in the National Basketball Association, headlined the 2022 class of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame that was inducted Sunday, Oct. 9, at Portland’s Providence Park. A 1968 Linfield graduate, Durham joined coaches Dennis Erickson and Dave Gasser, basketball players Fred Jones and Felicia Ragland, master’s athlete Becky Sisley and hockey standout Connie Madigan in this year’s Oregon Sports Hall of Fame class. While he was a student at McMinnville High School, Durham stood next to his father, head coach Paul Durham, on the Linfield football sidelines and took notes during games. When he entered Linfield and was a member of the Wildcats football team, he again stood on the sidelines, not playing quarterback much as a freshman and sophomore. “Dad always said I had to perform better than the other players that played my position, or he could not play me,” Terry says. “So that was one challenge to deal with. Another was getting respect from the other players, as they really did not trust me being around them. They made me earn it. “Playing for my dad was special. It got to the point in games that we would think alike, both calling the same play.” Durham went on to become a two-time all-Northwest Conference quarterback. He was one of the leaders of the 1965
Linfield team, which won conference and went on to the NAIA national semifinals where the Wildcats knocked off Sul Ross State, 30-27, in Alpine, Texas. He played basketball as a freshman, then participated only in college intramurals until Coach Ted Wilson called. When Wilson kicked players off the 1966-67 Linfield basketball team, Terry became a starting guard. Linfield tied for the conference title, beat Western Oregon in the NAIA district playoffs and went to Kansas City, losing by a point in the opening round to the eventual national champion. After Linfield, he played the 1967 season for the Victoria, British Columbia, team of the Continental Football League and had 1967 and 1968 tryouts with the NFL Chicago Bears. His first coaching experience was in football at Linfield in 1969 under Coach Ad Rutschman, while he earned a master’s of education degree. Later, he coached football at Sunset and Klamath Union high schools, and was a football graduate assistant at Stanford University. He officiated junior high school, Linfield intramurals, high school, small and major college basketball games, then working eight NBA summer camps before being hired fulltime by the association. Durham previously was inducted into the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 and the McMinnville High School Hall of Fame in 2011.

WILDCATS IN THE PROS Recent Linfield graduates Wyatt Smith and Tyler Sitton spent the summer in Munich, Germany, where they led a GFL professional team to its best record in 20 years Taking their talents oversees during the summer months, two former Linfield Wildcats football stars led the Munich Cowboys to their best season in 20 years. Wyatt Smith and Tyler Sitton helped lead Munich to an 8-1-1 record and an appearance in the German Football League playoffs. Despite a furious comeback effort, the Cowboys were eliminated from contention for the German Bowl title, losing by three points. With Smith leading the offense throughout the season, the Cowboys averaged 30.3 points and 322.9 yards per outing. Continuing his torrid statistical efficiency from his Linfield days, Smith completed 73.2 percent of his passes while appearing in all 10 games. He passed for 1,819 yards and 17 touchdowns while surrendering just four interceptions in 235 pass attempts. Sitton, a defensive back, appeared in all 10 games and finished as the Cowboys’ fourth-leading tackler with 44 stops. He also registered an interception and a tackle for loss. Linfield football coach Joseph Smith, Wyatt’s father, took to Twitter to tweet his congratulations to the two Wildcats: “We are sure proud of you two. You went to a foreign country and brought professionalism, work ethic, selflessness, and heart to a program trying to learn how to win. You showed the Cowboys how to win. We could not be more proud. We look forward to your return!” The two McMinnville High School graduates each earned their bachelor’s degrees from Linfield before departing for Europe.
